Harvest is underway across the state, with progress varying by region. Yields are showing improvement in some areas, while scattered showers and heavy rains have slowed harvest in others. Test weights remain steady overall, though some growers continue to face challenges from wheat streak mosaic virus.

Harvest is in full swing for producers in Russell County, where yields are proving to be a bright spot in the 2025 Kansas wheat harvest. Jayce Dickerson reported their first load went to the elevator on June 18, and as of June 24, they were about halfway through harvest. 

“We’re averaging around 60 bushels per acre,” Dickerson said. “We’re doing really good.” That’s a solid rebound compared to previous seasons—especially three years ago, when the family didn’t cut any wheat at all. “Two years ago, we cut some; last year, we cut most; and this year, we’re cutting it all because it’s actually really good.”

In Wilson County, farmer Randy Small began harvesting around June 12, with a short pause before getting back into the fields on June 19. Now nearing the finish line, he expects to wrap up within the next couple of days if everything goes to plan. Test weights have been averaging around 57 to 58. While the recent moisture could have caused delays, Randy says conditions have remained favorable overall. He planted three different wheat varieties this season and reports that all have performed consistently across the board.

Harvest is underway in Bazine, where CGS General Manager Brad Cowan reported they took in their first load on June 18. He says the elevator has received around 235,000 bushels, and harvest is about 20 to 25 percent complete. Yields are averaging near 50 bushels per acre, though it’s still early to get a full picture. Protein levels are running lower than usual, currently averaging 11.12, with a wide range from 9 to 14. While harvest began about five days earlier than it did last year, challenges remain. Wheat streak mosaic virus is showing up in isolated pockets and hitting those fields hard, and heavy rainfall from about 10 days ago is still causing problems in certain areas.

Kansas Wheat: Day 4 harvest report 

The National Pork Producers Council applauded the introduction of similar animal health legislation in the U.S. House and Senate to fund U.S. Department of Agriculture measures and programs that help prevent, prepare for, and respond to foreign animal diseases. 

 Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman presented similar legislative language in his committee’s budget reconciliation package.&nbsp; &nbsp;

This comes on the heels of the arrests of two Chinese Nationals for trying to smuggle a harmful fungus into the United States.&nbsp; The fungus,&nbsp;Fusarium graminearum, which scientific literature classifies as a potential agroterrorism weapon. 

This noxious fungus causes “head blight,” a disease of wheat, barley, maize, and rice, and is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year. Fusarium graminearum’s toxins cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock.

Ag Minute: Foreign animal diseases

This is day 3 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest is finally in full swing across much of southern and central Kansas. Wheat streak mosaic virus continues to challenge growers in parts of the state, impacting yields and test weights. After rains and humidity have slowed harvest progress, farmers are getting back into fields but having to dodge muddy areas.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is only 20 percent complete, well behind 49 percent complete last year and behind 31 percent on average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 22, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated 23 percent poor to very poor, 32 percent fair and 45 percent good to excellent.

Blake Connelly with Alliance Ag &amp; Grain in Ford County reports that harvest in the area began around June 12 and is currently about 40 percent complete. If the weather holds, he expects farmers to begin finishing up by the end of this coming weekend. Yields are up compared to last year, but protein levels are running lower, with most in the low to mid 11s. He says one of the biggest challenges they’ve seen this year has been wheat streak mosaic virus in a few locations, which is having a significant impact on yields and test weights.

Sarah Dodge with Farmers Cooperative Equity Co. in Barber County reported they took in their first load of wheat on June 10 at their Medicine Lodge location. As of Sunday, June 22, they’ve brought in about 1.1 million bushels company wide. Yield reports are ranging from around 45 to 60 bushels per acre, she said. Protein levels haven’t been as strong as in recent years and are averaging in the mid 11s across the company. Harvest is about halfway done overall, with some locations close to 70 percent after successfully managing to miss the recent rains. Dodge says the extra moisture and the timing of storms have brought down test weights, but she’s hopeful that some of the later loads will come in stronger and help boost the overall average.

Olson Farms near Gypsum in Saline County began harvest on June 12. Bryant Olson said their overall farm average is hovering near 50 bushels per acre this year, which is an improvement from last year.&nbsp;

“Overall, the wheat has been a lot better than last year,” Olson said. While not a record-setting crop, test weights have consistently come in at or above 60 pounds per bushel with protein levels around 12 percent. “This year’s crop is slightly above an average crop but definitely not a bumper crop,” he said.

Disease pressure and weather have presented challenges in this region of central Kansas.&nbsp;

“Some challenges we have faced this year were wheat streak mosaic virus, and rain has stopped our harvest progress,” Olson reported. “WSMV took over half of what the wheat could’ve potentially made. We haven’t seen any in the area in a while,” he said. Saline and Dickinson counties have been hot spots for the disease this year.&nbsp;

Despite those issues, some varieties have shown promise this harvest.&nbsp;

“Some specific varieties we are very happy with are KS Mako and KS Providence,” Olson said. “KS Mako took the wheat streak very well.”

Day 3:  Kansas Wheat harvest report

June is the month that tests my schedule and patience as we await the start of wheat harvest. For years my replies to a variety of invitations and requests have always defaulted to something to the effect of, “That’s June, so if we’re harvesting wheat we won’t be able to.”  

June is the one month out of the entire year where I fully exercise being noncommittal.

Our June days are determined by whether the wheat is ready or not. If it’s not ready, a last-minute invitation to have a friend over or spend a few hours at the city pool are possible. But if the wheat is ready, the day has already been intentionally made clear and our efforts are directed to getting the wheat out of the fields as quickly as possible ahead of any summer storms.

We generally have a pretty good idea of when our wheat harvest will take place on our farm based on history and memories posted on social media. Yes, some years we’ve started harvest earlier than normal, but we have established a “normal” harvest window give or take a few days based on the weather.

But there are exceptions, and this year is definitely one of those. We’ve passed the halfway point of the month of June, and with that, we have also passed our “normal” harvest window. 

Normally we are in the thick of wheat harvest by this time of the month. I often joke that we will more often than not celebrate Father’s Day with naps because everyone is experiencing a level of tiredness that only occurs during wheat harvest.

But not this year. We are still quite energized at this point in the month mostly because we have had so much rain. The rain has essentially halted all work. From finishing up soybean and sorghum planting to swathing hay and harvesting wheat, we have been unable to get into the fields simply because it’s too wet.

We generally have completed our wheat harvest by the Fourth of July, and I begin thinking about and planning some family activities we’d like to do with the kids before they return to school in August. But this year, that might be pushed back as there’s a pretty good chance that we’ll still be harvesting wheat in early July.

I know the summer heat will soon turn up. I know that the Kansas winds will blow again. And I know that soon we will have dry fields and it will be “go time.”

The combines are ready. The trucks are ready. The workers are ready. And as soon as we can go, we will.

But until then, I’ve decided to extend my practice of being noncommittal into a portion of July as well. Afterall, our wheat harvest is turning out to be anything but normal this year.

 That's because the commission blamed pesticides as a possible health risk in their first report.  The agriculture community said they weren't invited or involved in the first report, and it contained mistakes and distortions that have created fears about the safety of the food supply.

This is day 2 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest was off to a rapid start in southwest Kansas on Thursday with temperatures topping out about 100 degrees. There will be more information available on how yields and quality will compare to average by the beginning of next week when reports start to come in.

In central Kansas, harvest came to a halt after Tuesday’s rainfall but will pick back up by the weekend with high winds and nearly triple digit temperatures in the forecast.

Derek Sawyer who farms in McPherson County reports that before Tuesday’s rain they were cutting wheat that was yielding 80 bushels per acre. But Tuesday brought the area 5 to 6 inches of rain, up to 10 inches in some places, and 80 mile per hour sustained winds. This took kernels out of the heads in many wheat fields. He estimates that they probably lost 25% of the yield potential. Test weights were good, but will no doubt decrease with the rain. Some fields are in standing water and may not be able to be harvested. While he should be over halfway done with harvest, Sawyer reports that he barely even got started, and won’t be able to get into even the fields with the least amount of rainfall until the weekend at the earliest. The creek is out of its banks and roads are flooded in the area.

Lee Scheufler who farms in Rice and Ellsworth counties reports that harvest began on June 10 and that yields were average up to 20 percent above average. They’ve had a couple rain delays, including Tuesday’s rainfall which ranged from 1.75 to 4 inches in the area, with localized flooding. He was able to find dry ground on Thursday and get back to harvest before the weekend. After the rains, test weight has decreased slightly but is still around average. He is only about 15 to 20 percent of the way done with harvest and has at least a week left.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Day 2, Kansas wheat harvest report

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has just two
weeks to either sign or veto a controversial bill that would impact
carbon dioxide pipelines in Iowa. 

On a Friday press call, landowners
urged Reynolds to uphold Iowa and GOP values around property rights
by signing the bill into law. House File 639 advanced from the
Senate, following four years of effort from a group of landowners and
House lawmakers.

The bill would require carbon sequestration projects
to prove they are a common carrier, in order to use eminent domain.&nbsp;

High school seniors and college students can learn about career opportunities in precision agriculture, data analysis and variable rate application equipment during Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agronomy.k-state.edu/outreach-and-services/educational-workshops/precision-agriculture-workshop/">Smart Farm Challenge Precision Agriculture Workshop</a>&nbsp;from July 27-29.

Workshop participants will engage in hands-on activities, including flying drones, learning about soil and plant sensors, and collecting field data. There will also be opportunities for participants to engage with industry partners to connect what they are learning to the wide range of precision agriculture career fields.

As many as 30 participants will be learning from faculty at the agronomy facilities and farms on the Manhattan campus, including all meals and housing in the residence halls.

Students of any skill level or familiarity with precision agriculture and agronomy are welcome to attend. The cost of the workshop is $50. Registration is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agronomy.k-state.edu/outreach-and-services/educational-workshops/precision-agriculture-workshop/">online</a>&nbsp;and will close on July 11 or when it's full.

K-State conference to help high school seniors, college students explore careers in precision agriculture

Harvest moved into southern Kansas about a week ago, but since then it has been slow going. With scattered showers and high humidity, most days the combines can’t get rolling until late-afternoon. There are reports that farmers have gotten into dry fields along the I-135 corridor, as far north as Mitchell County.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is only 3 percent complete, well behind 25 percent complete last year and behind 11 percent on average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 15, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated at 21 percent poor to very poor, 30 percent fair and 49 percent good to excellent.

Chris Stevens, General Manager of Farmers Coop Grain Association in Conway Springs, reports that harvest began last Monday, June 9, but it has been hit or miss. They’ve only taken in about 10% of the bushels they expect, but should be halfway complete by now. So far, it’s too early and too spotty to tell how test weights are going to average, but they’ve heard yield reports from 26 to 50 bushels per acre, which would be an average crop. He mentioned that some of the later maturing varieties had the advantage this year because of the rains. The area doesn’t have any disease pressure so far this year. Stevens is hoping that forecasted showers dodge them and it gets hot and dry for harvest this weekend.

However, the National Weather Service in Wichita is forecasting thunderstorms across the harvest area Tuesday afternoon. Winds up to 80 mph, hail up to tennis ball size and heavy rainfall are all possible.

Chris Fryer, Grain Merchandiser with CoMark Equity Alliance LLC in Cheney, says they’ve only taken in about 5% to date, even though harvest started last Tuesday, June 10. They would normally be about a third done by now, but rains have kept harvest from progressing. The quality has been very good so far, and yields are better than last year.

Kansas Wheat: 2025 Harvest day one

Born and raised on a farm in Northwest Kansas, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges the agricultural community faces. As a child, my parents had to fight to keep our farm, and I saw the mental and emotional toll these challenges placed on our family.

Years later, I took a job as a therapist in a rural community just miles from my parents’ farm. I saw the need for education on the effects of stress in agriculture, but I also saw the stigma associated with talking about mental health. Kansas was hit hard by drought, and the effect of the stressors could be seen on our farms and in our rural communities.&nbsp;I saw the community struggling and decided to give my first presentation on the effects of stress in agriculture. The stigma surrounding mental health was very strong 20 years ago and only three people ended up attending that first presentation. Stigma has always surrounded mental health; however, in agriculture, it’s almost ingrained in the profession.

“Rub some dirt on it,” “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” and “tough it out” are some well-known phrases in farming communities. While “toughing it out” might work on a minor physical injury, it isn’t the best way to recognize, understand and manage your stressors during times of uncertainty.

In the past 20 years, I have seen significant improvements in the stigma surrounding mental health. Instead of getting lost in the stigma and ignoring mental health needs, people are starting to recognize the symptoms of stress earlier and how that can affect mood and anxiety. This is critically important, because like any challenge, the quicker you are to respond to your mental health needs, the more likely you will be successful.

They also recognize and understand that much of their stress is from challenges they have little to no control over. Instead of blaming themselves for challenges outside of their control, hardworking farmers and ranchers are finding better ways and resources to manage their stress, anxiety, depression and overall mental health. The stigma is still there, but it doesn’t have the same grip that it used to, and this allows people to think about mental health differently.

It’s not just the agricultural community that is getting better; the people and resources supporting the community are changing as well. I have seen so many great people and organizations take on the stigma surrounding mental health in agriculture. The next generation of farmers are taking the time to talk about and prioritize mental health. Small communities and agricultural organizations are working tirelessly to spread information and resources to those who are struggling. Families that were once reluctant to discuss the effects of stress now come together to talk and support each other through challenging times. Rural communities are full of amazing people and resources working to overcome the mental health stigma and finding ways to support those in need.

While I worked as a therapist, I was always fond of saying that stress and mental health issues are not an excuse or a weakness like the stigma suggests. They are a challenge.

Improvements are still needed regarding mental health and the stigma surrounding mental health — I’ve seen firsthand the substantial steps that have already been taken to improve mental health in agriculture. My first crowd may have consisted of only three people, but since then, I have given similar speeches to thousands of farmers and ranchers in numerous towns across Kansas.

Amazing people are working tirelessly to break down this stigma every day, and there’s a way to honor their advocacy: Kansas Farm Bureau’s Rural Minds Matter Advocate of the Year Award. It was humbling to receive the inaugural award last year, and I am excited to see the program continue to celebrate the impact of mental health advocates in rural communities. Instead of blaming themselves for challenges outside of their control, hardworking farmers and ranchers are finding better ways and resources to manage their stress, anxiety, depression and overall mental health. The stigma is still there, but it doesn’t have the same grip that it used to, and this allows people to think about mental health differently.It’s not just the agricultural community that is getting better; the people and resources supporting the community are changing as well. I have seen so many great people and organizations take on the stigma surrounding mental health in agriculture. The next generation of farmers are taking the time to talk about and prioritize mental health. Small communities and agricultural organizations are working tirelessly to spread information and resources to those who are struggling. Families that were once reluctant to discuss the effects of stress now come together to talk and support each other through challenging times. Rural communities are full of amazing people and resources working to overcome the mental health stigma and finding ways to support those in need.While I worked as a therapist, I was always fond of saying that stress and mental health issues are not an excuse or a weakness like the stigma suggests. They are a challenge.Improvements are still needed regarding mental health and the stigma surrounding mental health — I’ve seen firsthand the substantial steps that have already been taken to improve mental health in agriculture. My first crowd may have consisted of only three people, but since then, I have given similar speeches to thousands of farmers and ranchers in numerous towns across Kansas.Amazing people are working tirelessly to break down this stigma every day, and there’s a way to honor their advocacy: Kansas Farm Bureau’s Rural Minds Matter Advocate of the Year Award. It was humbling to receive the inaugural award last year, and I am excited to see the program continue to celebrate the impact of mental health advocates in rural communities. other dairy groups are very happy.  That's because the Senate Ag
Committee voted in the “Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act.”&nbsp;

&nbsp;The
bill’s markup is a critical first step in passing the bipartisan
legislation, which has already been approved in the House ag
committee.

  National Milks President Gregg Doud said that passing the
Act will allow more schoolkids to access the essential nutrients they
need in their diets.  If it does get signed into law, give schools
with the option of serving whole and two-percent milk, because right
now, they can only offer one percent or completely fat-free milk.

American farmers need to thank the FBI.  That's because two Chinese citizens smuggled in a fungus that is a potential agro-terrorism weapon.

  They've been charged with conspiracy, smuggling, making false statements, and visa fraud. 

 The fungus they smuggled in causes head blight.  That's a disease that affects wheat, barley,  milo, and rice, and causes billions of dollars in economic losses in crops all over the world. 

 Products from the diseased grain ingested by humans or livestock, will cause vomiting, liver damage, reproductive problems, and birth defects.

One of the arrested is a professed loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party.

Ag Minute: Ag economy 

When the Kansas legislature selected a state tree it chose the native cottonwood because its presence was synonymous with homestead success. The fast-growing trees require adequate moisture to grow, so a standing grove indicated crops were likely to succeed as well."

It might honestly be said that the successful growth of the cottonwood grove on the homestead was often the determining factor in the decision of the homesteader to stick it out until he could prove up on his claim,” legislators reasoned in 1937. “The cottonwood tree can rightfully be called the pioneer tree of Kansas."

Cottonwoods were also named the state tree in Nebraska and Wyoming, largely for the same reason.

A large specimen of the popular poplar stood just outside the Statehouse when the cottonwood became Kansas’ state tree. It had shaded citizens and politicians alike, with presidents Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley and William Howard Taft having sought refuge under its canopy.

Standing in the shadow of a cottonwood’s triangular leaves offers protection from the sun and a bit of a light show. The top side of the leaves are a lustrous green while the underside reflects hints of silver causing a shimmering effect as they sway in the breeze. The fronds turn a brilliant yellow before falling to the ground in the fall.

Legend has it the Statehouse Cottonwood sprouted from a stake driven during the construction of the Capitol. A less exciting (and more believable) story is the tree was already an established sapling in 1866 when construction started and it survived the building process, in addition to other calamities before succumbing to old age in 1984. Today a cutting from the original grows in its place.

While not a redwood or sequoia, cottonwoods can be massive compared to other trees in Kansas. They top out around 100 feet, but the trunks can be several feet in diameter. The towering nature of the trees meant they also served as landmarks, like one in Osage County that designated a turn on the Santa Fe Trail.

Cottonwoods don’t get their name from the wood inside those towering trunks. Instead, it comes from the small seeds the behemoths produce. The lightweight kernels are coated in fluffy fibers resembling strands of cotton that act like sails dispersing the seeds with the wind.

It’s not uncommon to see flurries of cotton flying in June as large groves of the trees shed their seeds. The white puffs are barely heavy enough to fall toward the ground. On calm, sunny days, it’s not uncommon to watch the rise and fall with the invisible thermal currents.

Cottonwoods, like early explorers on the high seas, can reach anywhere the winds blow. Kansans chose cottonwoods as the state tree because they served as crude symbols of likely success to prairie pioneers, but cottonwoods colonized the landscape much like their human counterparts through resilience, adaptability and determination.

They thrive in a new and harsh environment, traits necessary for any settler. Cottonwoods embody the characteristics of Kansans in a state founded and shaped by persistence and possibility.

Insight: Pioneers and cottonwoods

A new product that reduces animal stress could be the key to increasing artificial insemination rates in cattle. Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/tdi/">Technology Development Institute</a>, or TDI, collaborated with faculty in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ag.k-state.edu/">College of Agriculture</a>&nbsp;to design, produce and test the product.

Assistant Professor&nbsp;<a href="https://www.asi.k-state.edu/about/people/faculty/dias/">Nicholas Wege Dias</a>&nbsp;and Professor&nbsp;<a href="https://www.asi.k-state.edu/about/people/faculty/johnson/">Sandy Johnson</a>, both in K-State's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.asi.k-state.edu/">animal science and industry department</a>, specialize in beef cattle reproduction and have been involved in several projects designed to improve the fertility of the animal. Their initial studies indicated that acclimating the animals to their surroundings during the artificial insemination, or AI, process reduced animal stress and increased reproduction by up to 10%.

"Once we saw the benefits of getting animals acquainted with the facilities on AI success, we began to think about adoptable strategies to promote positive reinforcement during handling," Dias said. "You often see cow brushes and how the animals enjoy rubbing against them on social media, so we thought, 'Let's come up with a way to place a cow brush in the alleyway so the animals can enjoy themselves while they wait their turn.'"

Their goal was to position a brush in the center of the alley just below bovine head height so the animals could rub their backs with the brush to reduce stress.

While Dias and Johnson had an idea of what they wanted, they needed help to design and fabricate a device that could be installed on any type or size of chute and that was able to withstand the force generated by the animals. Dias and Johnson contacted the Technology Development Institute to discuss the idea and determine if the institute could help develop a prototype product for testing.

TDI engineers and interns began working on various designs that could easily be installed on chutes made of wood, pipe or any number of materials. The device had to be adjustable in height due to differences in wall and animal heights, and it also needed to be able to adjust to sloped alley walls. TDI developed various concept designs and, with feedback from Dias and Johnson, finalized the design.

The team then fabricated two prototype devices that are currently being used by Dias and his students to determine the effectiveness of having such devices included during the AI process.

"You often see cow brushes and how the animals enjoy rubbing against them on social media, so we thought, 'Let's come up with a way to place a cow brush in the alleyway so the animals can enjoy themselves while they wait their turn.'"<figure>

 </figure>Their goal was to position a brush in the center of the alley just below bovine head height so the animals could rub their backs with the brush to reduce stress.While Dias and Johnson had an idea of what they wanted, they needed help to design and fabricate a device that could be installed on any type or size of chute and that was able to withstand the force generated by the animals. Dias and Johnson contacted the Technology Development Institute to discuss the idea and determine if the institute could help develop a prototype product for testing.TDI engineers and interns began working on various designs that could easily be installed on chutes made of wood, pipe or any number of materials. The device had to be adjustable in height due to differences in wall and animal heights, and it also needed to be able to adjust to sloped alley walls. Outbreaks of bird flu in mammals doubled in 2024 with other diseases spreading and putting more humans at risk.&nbsp; 

A new report by the World Organization for Animal Health says animal diseases were migrating into unaffected areas, and almost half have animal-to-human transmission potential.&nbsp;

The report emphasized that the more cattle, cats and dogs become infected - there is more risk of these diseases being transmitted to humans.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ag Minute: bird flu transmission concerns 

A recent stretch of widespread rainfall and cooler-than-normal temperatures has brought significant drought relief to large portions of the Central and Northern Great Plains, according to the latest drought monitor update.

Between May 20 and June 2, much of Kansas, Nebraska, and northeastern Colorado received between 2 and 4 inches of precipitation, with some areas recording even higher totals. This influx of moisture, coupled with unseasonably cool temperatures during the latter half of May, contributed to notable improvements in drought conditions.

As of June 2 the southern half of Kansas from Pratt County east to the Missouri state line is now officially drought-free.

Elsewhere, more than half an inch of rain fell across southern Colorado earlier this week, prompting a one-category improvement on the U.S. Drought Monitor. Southeastern Wyoming also saw the removal of severe to extreme drought designations, thanks to recent rainfall, long-term precipitation indices (SPI) over 6 to 12 months, and updated drought assessments from the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC).

Meteorologists say ongoing monitoring and additional rainfall over the coming weeks will determine whether these trends continue into the summer growing season.

Rain, cooler temps bring drought relief

 A newly formed advocacy group backed by Bayer is raising red flags over a recent federal report that it says could threaten farmers’ access to essential crop protection products.

The group, known as the Modern Ag Alliance, was created in response to concerns stemming from the Make America Healthy Again Commission report. According to the alliance, the report suggests that the federal government could move toward restricting or banning the use of certain agricultural chemicals—a move the group warns could have sweeping consequences.

In a statement, the Modern Ag Alliance said such restrictions would “undermine science-based regulatory frameworks” and potentially “jeopardize the safety and stability of the U.S. food supply.” The group emphasized that farmers are already grappling with rising costs, volatile markets, and unpredictable weather, and losing access to vital crop protection tools would add unnecessary burden.

“These tools are critical to maintaining productivity and protecting crops from pests, weeds, and disease,” the alliance said. “Farmers shouldn’t have to worry about losing access to the science-backed solutions they rely on.”

While the commission’s report has not led to any regulatory changes yet, the Modern Ag Alliance says it plans to advocate aggressively on behalf of farmers and the broader agriculture industry, urging policymakers to prioritize science and sustainability in any future decisions.

Ag Minute: Protecting crop protection products 

For the first time in six years, cash rent rates for Iowa farmland are on the decline, dropping by 3% so far this year. The average rate has fallen to $271 per acre, down from last year’s peak of $279 per acre, marking the first annual decrease since 2019.

The dip in rates was widespread, with 68 of Iowa's 99 counties reporting reductions. The most significant drops were seen in counties with high-quality farmland. Premium acres, previously fetching as much as $328 per acre for corn and soybean production, experienced the sharpest declines. Even low-quality land, typically the most stable segment of the market, saw a 3% decrease, bringing the average rent down to $225 per acre.

Agricultural economists suggest that the decline may be due to a combination of factors, including lower commodity prices, rising input costs, and tightening profit margins for farmers.

While the dip offers some financial relief for tenants, landowners may begin to feel pressure as returns soften after years of steady growth in rental income.

Analysts will be watching closely to see whether this is a temporary correction or the beginning of a longer-term shift in Iowa’s agricultural land market.

While cattle producers are enjoying record-high prices for their livestock, the steep costs involved in replenishing herds are causing many to hesitate on expanding their operations.

The latest USDA monthly Cattle on Feed Report reveals declines across the board, with on-feed numbers, placements, and marketings all dropping between two and three percent. This suggests that despite the optimism, the pipeline remains constricted.

Adding to the picture, USDA’s Cold Storage Report released Friday showed that total red meat supplies held in freezers increased by five percent compared to the previous month, but remain six percent lower than the same time last year. Specifically, frozen beef supplies fell two percent from the prior month and also were two percent below last year’s levels. Conversely, frozen pork stocks surged, rising 11 percent from the previous month.

The cash cattle market was quiet yesterday, reflecting the cautious approach from buyers and sellers alike. Last week’s trade saw live cattle prices ranging between $219 and $221 per hundredweight, with dressed cattle (meat) prices between $360 and $367. The boxed beef market remains robust, with select cuts trading near $360 and choice cuts close to $361.

Industry watchers will be closely monitoring upcoming reports to see if supply constraints begin to ease, but for now, cattle producers face a delicate balance between high prices and high replacement costs in a market marked by tight supplies.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 A multi-day stretch of widespread precipitation from May 24 to 26 has brought much-needed drought relief to several areas across the Central Plains, leading to notable improvements in drought conditions, according to recent climate monitoring reports.

Rainfall totals ranged from 1 to 3 inches across large portions of southwestern South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and northeastern Colorado, with some localized areas receiving even more. This substantial precipitation, coupled with much cooler temperatures, played a key role in recharging topsoil moisture, offering a boost to regional agriculture and ecosystems.

The latest drought analysis shows a 1-category improvement across parts of southwestern South Dakota, western and central Nebraska, and northeastern Colorado. In these areas, indicators such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) at various time scales, along with soil moisture data, showed clear signs of recovery. As a result, areas classified under severe to extreme drought have seen a reduction in coverage.

Meanwhile, southeastern Colorado also experienced lighter rainfall. While totals were lower, multiple indicators including SPI, soil moisture, and the Vegetation Drought Response Index (VegDri) suggested enough improvement to remove the last remaining areas of moderate drought from the region.

However, not all areas benefited from the recent rainfall. Southern Nebraska and northern Kansas largely missed the precipitation, leading to small 1-category degradations in drought status. Western Colorado also saw conditions worsen, with 90- to 180-day SPI data supporting a 1-category downgrade due to increasing dryness over the past several months.

With the growing season underway, continued monitoring will be crucial to determine whether these improvements mark the beginning of a sustained trend or a temporary break in ongoing drought conditions.

Drought Monitor: Rainfall brings some relief

The Trump Administration recently appointed David Schemm as the new State Executive Director (SED) for the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Kansas. Schemm joined the Kansas FSA team on May 5, 2025.

“When America’s farming communities prosper, the entire nation thrives. This new group of USDA appointees will ensure President Trump’s America First agenda is a reality in rural areas across the country. I am grateful for the leadership of these new state directors and look forward to their work reorienting the agency to put Farmers First again,” said Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.
