AG Minute: Ag shipping on the Missouri River

U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) welcomed the July 7 signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with APTINDO, Indonesia’s flour milling association. Under the agreement, APTINDO committed to doubling its annual purchases of U.S. wheat to 1 million metric tons (36.7 million bushels) each year for the next five years. &nbsp;

Kansas wheat farmers will benefit directly from this new agreement with APTINDO. As one of the nation’s leading wheat-producing states and a major supplier of Hard Red Winter (HRW) wheat, Kansas plays a critical role in meeting this increased demand.

Kansas farmers have historically contributed a large portion of U.S. wheat exports to Southeast Asia.&nbsp;HRW constitutes 27% of U.S. wheat exports to Indonesia over the last 10 marketing years, meaning Kansas-grown HRW will be important to help fill additional shipments under the new commitment, supporting farm prices and reinforcing the importance of maintaining export-quality grain.

The announcement also highlights the value of continued investment in wheat research, breeding for quality and international market development, efforts strongly supported by Kansas wheat checkoff dollars. As global buyers prioritize quality and reliability, Kansas wheat producers are well-positioned to remain a trusted source.

“The administration has encouraged trading partners to buy additional U.S. agricultural products. The commitment of the Indonesian milling industry to purchase U.S. wheat reflects this increased focus by the Indonesian government to improve the trade balance with the United States,” said USW President and CEO Mike Spier. “The collaboration between the U.S. wheat industry and APTINDO reflects our shared commitment to delivering high-quality U.S. wheat and supporting continued growth in Indonesia’s milling sector.”

“By increasing our purchases of U.S. wheat, Indonesian millers are not only securing a vital, high-quality agricultural commodity for our growing market, but also actively contributing to the shared goal of a more balanced trade relationship between our two nations,” said APTINDO Chairman Franciscus Welirang.

Indonesia is one of the largest wheat importers in the world, but the market is highly competitive. Indonesian wheat consumption for food use has increased by 22 percent over the past decade. Rapid growth in demand for wheat foods is expected to continue, including higher quality products favoring flour from U.S. wheat classes. &nbsp;

Indonesia has imported an average of 500,000 metric tons (18.4 million bushels) from the United States over the last five marketing years, including shipments exceeding 792,000 metric tons (29.1 million bushels) in the 2024/25 marketing year that ended on May 31. Under the new agreement, APTINDO agreed to purchase a minimum of 800,000 metric tons (29.4 million bushels) in U.S. origin milling wheat in 2025 and then increase an additional 25 percent to 1 million metric tons (36.7 million bushels), or an equivalent value of $250 million, annually through 2030.&nbsp;

“The MOU signing marks a major milestone for the Indonesian milling industry and U.S. wheat producers,” said Joe Sowers, USW regional vice president for South and Southeast Asia. “Sales made over this five-year period will provide an opportunity to showcase the reliability and functionality of U.S. wheat. USW plans to work with our partners in Indonesia to leverage this commitment into long-term growth of U.S. wheat supply to this Southeast Asian market through additional technical support and assistance with capacity building.”

The signing follows the announcement of a specific import protocol for U.S. origin that adjusted sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) regulations related to fumigation and traceability requirements. This phytosanitary barrier was resolved in mid-June 2025 following 18 months of coordination and information sharing between USDA and the Indonesia Quarantine Agency (IQA). &nbsp;

This effort to demonstrate U.S. wheat safety and quality helped protect sales to Indonesian millers as prices became more competitive. &nbsp;

“Together, these trade policy developments keep U.S. wheat competitive in this substantial Southeast Asian market,” Spier said. “Today, we are celebrating continued market access and deeper ties between U.S. wheat farmers and Indonesian millers.” &nbsp;

A group calling itself&nbsp; "Farmers for Free Trade" has been on the road and holding events called Tariff Town Halls in half a dozen states. 

These events discussed how they think tariffs hurt rural communities.&nbsp; At the town hall in Little Rock, Arkansas, one farmer estimated that up to 30% percent of farmers would be out of business if there is no change between now and December.

Ag Minute: Farmers for Free Trade 

The Kansas wheat harvest is 93 percent complete, near 96 percent complete last year, but ahead of 88 percent average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending July 13, 2025.&nbsp;

Overall yields for the 2025 crop ranged from slightly below average to excellent, depending on region and weather impacts. While many areas reported strong test weights and good protein levels, rain during harvest lowered grain quality in some locations, leading to yield losses and occasional field abandonment.

Erik Lange, Executive Vice President / Chief Operations Officer for MKC and Interim General Manager for Producer Ag, LLC — a grain marketing joint venture between Mid-Kansas Cooperative (MKC) and CHS Inc. — broke down this year’s wheat harvest for their 55 locations in 8 regions across the state of Kansas.

“We’ve been two days from done for the past 20 days,” said Lange, adding that the rain is welcome, but the timing has affected wheat quality and efforts to take harvest in. “Overall, it has been a good harvest, meeting or exceeding expectations from a yield standpoint.”&nbsp;

In the CHS southern plains region of Greeley, Wallace, Logan and Wichita counties, this year’s wheat quality is good, with test weights averaging over 60 pounds per bushel. Protein is averaging 11.75%, and yields are average to above average, with some pockets a little lower due to drought and stand issues at seeding.

In Seward and Meade counties, test weights are averaging 60.5 pounds per bushel. Protein is averaging 11%, and yields were excellent, above average except for some isolated areas with early season drought and stand issues.

In south central Kansas, Sumner, Harper and Cowley counties, test weights have dropped after rains on the ripe wheat, but the region is averaging 58 pounds per bushel. Protein is averaging 11%, and yields are varied by location — average to slightly below average overall. There was some spots with wheat streak mosaic and related viruses that caused yield and quality loss. Early season drought and stand issues also affected yields. Locations are still taking grain in south central and central Kansas and hope to be finished by mid-week.

In Reno, Harvey, Butler, Sedgwick and southern Marion counties, test weights have been affected by the rains, ending with an average of 57.5 pounds per bushel. Protein averaged 10.9%. This region — especially the northern parts — was above average, with great yields, good stands and good grain fill conditions.

In McPherson, Rice and northern Marion counties, there were some exceptional yields, due to good grain fill conditions and the cool, wet spring. Test weights average 57.7 pounds and protein is 12%. However, due to rains during harvest, there are some fields in McPherson and Sumner counties that will be abandoned and not harvested.

Yields have been good to excellent in the Dickinson/Clay county region, however, there was some WSMV in the southern part of the area that caused up to 30 to 40 percent yield loss. Test weights averaged 58 ½ - 59 pounds and protein was 11.5%.

In northeast Kansas, yields were excellent in northern Pottawatomie County and good in Riley and Wabaunsee counties, but only a small fraction of wheat is grown in this area. Test weights averaged 57.5 to 58 after rain on mature wheat, and they don’t test protein in this region.

In the Mid-West Fertilizer region of Labette and Neosho counties, both hard and soft wheat yields were average to below average and quality suffered from rain during harvest, with some wheat laying down. Test weights have been challenged by the rain on mature wheat, and there is some abandonment.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has given their nod to Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins’ farm security action plan.&nbsp; 

In the plan,&nbsp;USDA will increase its oversight of foreign land acquisitions, strengthen inspections to root out dangerous products entering the U.S., and prevent the spread of potentially devastating diseases.

Ag Minute: Fuel prices 

Despite early drought, uneven stands and losses to wheat streak mosaic virus, some farmers are reporting better than expected yields, with test weights and protein levels starting strong before tapering off due to late rains. Overall, the 2025 season has been an improvement over recent years.

Stan Remington, CEO of Frontier Ag, described this year’s wheat harvest as average overall, though results varied across their trade territory, which stretches from the Colorado border to Ogallah along I-70, and from the Nebraska line south to Ransom and Utica along Highway 4. With harvest now about 90 percent complete in their territory, Remington noted that the 2025 season stands out as above average when compared to the past few years.

In the northwest corner of the state, yields came in a little lower than expected. Fields north of Highway 24 also struggled, with several producers reporting below-average performance. Meanwhile, the Ness County area saw a stronger crop. As with most years, weather conditions made all the difference.

One of the bigger challenges this year came from wheat streak mosaic virus, which showed up more frequently along the I-70 corridor. These areas saw some of the most disappointing harvest results across Frontier Ag’s footprint, with Oakley and locations to the east experiencing the most severe impact from the virus. The presence of the virus in concentrated pockets dragged down yields.

Protein levels were also varied across the region. Weather conditions earlier in the growing season took a toll on quality in some areas. In addition, timing of spring rains played a key role. Fields that missed those critical windows saw reduced performance. Scattered showers during harvest also caused occasional delays, slowing progress in some locations.

Brian Linin, a farmer from Goodland, reports that harvest began on July 1 and his crew has about 10 days left. Linin, who farms alongside his dad and son, says their wheat is better than it looked, averaging above 50 bushels per acre so far, much better than last year and slightly above average.&nbsp;

Last fall’s drought conditions forced the Linins to redrill some fields in early November, a decision that significantly improved both stand establishment and yields. In fact, fields drilled later in the season are outperforming the earlier-emerging wheat across the area.

Test weights have been strong, ranging from 58 to 61.5 pounds per bushel, while protein levels are above average, running between 13.5 and 14 percent. Linin reported that drought was the biggest challenge this season, adding, “If we had received rain a month earlier, yields would be so much better.”

“Wheat is an excellent crop for this area,” said Linin, emphasizing that it fits well into their rotation. The stubble left behind greatly benefits the soil and improves the subsequent crop, and with decent yields, wheat can be a good cash crop.

In Lane County, farmer Ron Suppes, who grows hard white wheat, says he’s about 98 percent done with harvest and is working to finish up the last bit between rain showers. He brought in his first load about two weeks ago.

Suppes says recent rains have knocked down test weights, which started out about 61 to 63 pounds per bushel but have since dropped to 57 to 58 pounds. Protein levels have also dropped, starting out at 12 to 12.5 percent and are now sitting closer to 11 percent.

He says one of the biggest challenges this season started last fall, when wheat was planted into very dry soil. That led to uneven stands and staggered maturity across his fields, making harvest more complicated. Suppes planted KS Big Bow, KS Silverado and KS Snow Fox this year, and says all three have held up well despite the season’s challenges.

Kansas Wheat: Wheat harvest day 11

After seeing an increase in egg production earlier in the year, it has dropped off significantly.&nbsp; 

Summers hot weather is here, and that is curbing the egg output.&nbsp; Anytime temperatures get above 80 degrees, it can affect chickens with dehydration, and that leads to laying fewer eggs.&nbsp; 

The most recent information from the department of agriculture says that May egg output dropped, and so did the number of total egg laying hens.&nbsp; 

American egg production fell six percent, and some forecasters say it may not rebound for quite some time.&nbsp; That's because the number of egg layers in the U.S. on June 1 totaled 350 million, a six percent drop from the same date last year.

Ag Minute: Egg supply 

Reports from western Kansas paint a mixed picture, with yields ranging from slightly below average to above average depending on location and weather patterns. While quality was generally strong—test weights held up well and protein levels were respectable—drought stress, late rains and equipment breakdowns impacted both yield and progress. Farmers highlighted the importance of variety selection and residue management.

Gary Millershaski, who farms in Kearny County, reported that this year’s yields have been average to above average. Test weights have been respectable, slightly above average, just dropping off slightly with scattered showers in the area at the tail-end of harvest. They started cutting wheat on June 23 and finished up on Monday of this week, with the exception of one field that got rain and has kept them out for a few days. Millershaski expressed some disappointment with protein levels, which averaged 10.5 to 12 percent. Overall, the harvest was marked by a multitude of equipment breakdowns, which significantly slowed progress. However, he noted that the KS Dallas variety performed particularly well this year and he will be paying attention to Grain Craft’s “Preferred Variety List” when selecting next year’s varieties.

Eric Sperber, GM/CEO at Cornerstone Ag in Colby, estimates that harvest, which began on June 21, is about 80 to 85 percent complete in the area. He reported that their volume will likely be down 35 to 40 percent from their five year average, but despite less volume, the quality is very good. Test weights are holding up, even with showers on mature wheat, at 58 to 60 pounds per bushel. Protein is averaging in the upper 12s, ranging from 8 to 16 percent.

He reported that yields have been averaging about 35 bushels per acre, which is slightly below average. Conditions were dry during drilling last fall, and area acres were down. Drought conditions continued up until Memorial weekend, so even the wheat that emerged last fall and looked good in April ran out of gas by the time rains moved into the area. This is especially true for areas to the north of Colby, while areas to the south received a bit more moisture.

“It has been a weird harvest,” Sperber said. “It seems like the entire state matured at the same time.” He added that wheat in the Colby area ripened before custom harvest crews arrived, causing the first week of harvest to progress more slowly than usual.

Chris Tanner, who farms in Norton County, wrapped up wheat harvest on July 9, after two weeks of hit and miss rains held up harvest in his area. What started out as good test weights and yields on June 23, ended up with fields being insurance adjusted and won't be harvested because of weed pressure and disappointing test weights. Grainfield has been a consistent variety on his farm over the past several years, and KS Bill Snyder is a new variety that yielded very well.

Last fall, the crop emerged with an excellent stand, but the lack of winter precipitation and several cold snaps left the wheat in poor condition coming out of dormancy. A dry spring and a string of hot days further stressed the crop. Tanner said it was “a day away from death in early June” when it finally caught some rain. “With that small amount of rain, it’s surprising we had any wheat at all this year,” he said.&nbsp;

The fallow fields were averaging in the 40s to 70s for yields, and the continuous fields were averaging in the mid 20s before the harvest rains came through. A recent downpour—2 inches in just 20 minutes—highlighted the importance of wheat residue left on the soil. As Tanner put it, “There is value to wheat beyond the grain.”

Tanner said it was “a day away from death in early June” when it finally caught some rain. “With that small amount of rain, it’s surprising we had any wheat at all this year,” he said.&nbsp;</p><p>The fallow fields were averaging in the 40s to 70s for yields, and the continuous fields were averaging in the mid 20s before the harvest rains came through. A recent downpour—2 inches in just 20 minutes—highlighted the importance of wheat residue left on the soil. A new report warns that U.S. port fees targeting Chinese-owned and Chinese-built vessels could drive up shipping costs for American ag exporters by more than six billion dollars a year by 2028.

 The policy, issued in April by the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office, phases in new fees on foreign ships linked to China — and the report says corn, soybeans, and wheat will feel it most, adding up to seven cents a bushel to some shipments.

Ag Minute: Port fees target Chinese-owned vessels

This is day 9 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Kansas wheat farmers have been facing a challenging wheat harvest due to persistent rains on mature wheat. While test weights have suffered because of this, the 2025 crop has shown stronger yields than the past three drought-stricken years.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is 82 percent complete, behind 90 percent complete last year but ahead of 77 percent average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending July 6, 2025.&nbsp;

Josh Debes, a wheat farmer in northern Barton County, is among those still navigating the final stretch of harvest. Rainfall over the past week has forced Debes to chase dry fields across the county in hopes of finishing before another rain delay sets in. His wheat crop, already stressed by drought and a high incidence of wheat streak mosaic virus, is now facing quality declines due to the rain.

“We started with test weights at 60 pounds per bushel on our better fields,” Debes said. “But test weights have dropped since the wheat has been rained on.” Equally stressful has been a constant stream of equipment breakdowns that have kept one or both combines out of fields when Mother Nature has opened up a window for cutting.

Despite the setbacks, Debes expects to harvest&nbsp;more bushels this year than in either of the past two years, when extreme drought nearly wiped out his wheat entirely. “Morale is low, but at least we’ve got bushels to sell to cover the costs of getting this fall’s sorghum crop in the ground,” he added.

Jeff Boyd, CEO of Garden City Coop, reported that wheat harvest in their trade territory is 90 to 95 percent complete. Rains over the holiday weekend have slowed progress, and it may be another two days before combines can roll again in Finney County. Recent storms have also caused lodging in some fields.&nbsp;

Harvest began June 14 at their Hooker, Oklahoma, location. Boyd noted that test weights are averaging around 59 pounds per bushel, and protein levels are coming in at 11.8 percent. Overall, Boyd expects an average to above-average crop in terms of total bushels, with quality landing around average. Yields have ranged widely from the 30s to the 80s, with some of the strongest wheat coming from Finney and Lane counties. Yields have tended to decrease further north. The wheat streak mosaic virus complex has impacted yields and test weights in certain areas, while unusually high humidity has caused threshing issues with some varieties.

In Atchison County, Jay Armstrong wrapped up his Soft Red Winter wheat harvest on July 2 with a farm-wide average of 119 bushels per acre. Only 4.2% of wheat grown in Kansas is SRW, according to USDA/NASS’s winter wheat variety survey for 2025. While Armstrong reported good — but not exceptional — quality and test weights, the biggest challenge this season was getting the crop out between frequent rain delays. His harvested acres have already been planted to doublecrop soybeans.

The plant-based spread’s front label, in bold letters, describes itself as a form of butter, although federal standards of identity define butter as a product made from milk.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Labeling complaints

As combines roll across Kansas fields, the state’s wheat harvest has become a story of both hope and hardship this season. Justin Gilpin, CEO of the Kansas Wheat Commission, says the 2024 harvest is shaping up better than the drought-stricken years before it — but not without its share of fresh challenges.

“This year’s harvest has really been a roller coaster for our farmers,” Gilpin said in a recent interview. “We had an early start around June 10, but persistent rains have dragged things out and created real headaches, especially in parts of south-central Kansas.”

While some regions, particularly western Kansas, are seeing above-average yields and a welcome rebound after years of drought, others have been soaked by untimely storms just as the wheat ripened. In counties like Sumner, some farmers may not even harvest certain fields that sat underwater for days.

“You hate to complain about rain after years of drought, but ripe wheat doesn’t like wet feet,” Gilpin said. “Some wheat has lodged and laid over because of the wind and storms, and there are farmers talking to insurance adjusters because they just won’t be able to get it all out.”

Kansas wheat farmers are also contending with low wheat prices and lingering high input costs, adding to the stress. “It’s that squeeze — costs going up, income going down — that farmers keep facing year after year,” Gilpin said.

Still, there is cautious optimism that markets may improve slightly, and Kansas wheat is gaining fresh attention abroad. About half the state’s wheat crop is sold overseas, and after smaller harvests in recent years, Kansas farmers are working hard to regain export market share.

Just last week, international wheat buyers from Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador toured Kansas wheat farms and grain elevators — even riding combines to see the harvest up close.

“Having those millers in the field, meeting the families behind the grain, seeing the entire process from farm to export terminal — that relationship-building is invaluable,” Gilpin said. “When they make purchase decisions later, they remember that Kansas wheat story.”

In addition to private sales, Kansas wheat has long played a role in U.S. food aid programs, like Food for Peace, which date back to the 1950s. Gilpin said Kansas wheat farmers remain proud of that legacy and are closely watching national policy discussions about the program’s future.

“There’s real pride in knowing that Kansas wheat is helping feed people in food-insecure countries,” he said. “Keeping that legacy alive is important, not just for the goodwill it builds but for the stability it can bring to our markets.”

For now, as Kansas farmers navigate fields that are too wet in places and too dry in others, they’re hoping for clearer skies, steadier prices and fresh opportunities to get their crop to dinner tables both at home and around the world.

 The big increases were in the cost of beef, potato salad, and canned pork and beans.  But there are drops in the cost of pork chops, chips, and hamburger buns.

While yields and protein levels remain generally average, Kansas wheat farmers are facing significant challenges this year, including the widespread impact of wheat streak mosaic virus and related diseases, drought during the growing season and scattered rainfall during harvest.&nbsp;

Mike McClellan, who farms in Rooks County with his nephew Cade Beesley, started harvest about five days ago. Their crew includes hired hand Dave and Cade’s son, Coy. With about two-thirds left to cut, they’re making steady progress.

Yields have been above average compared to the past three years and are landing around average overall. Protein levels are ranging from 11.5 to 15.5 percent, and test weights on their better fields, those not hit by wheat streak mosaic virus, have been coming in at 58 to 60 pounds per bushel.

McClellan said their biggest challenges this year have been drought and wheat streak mosaic virus. The virus hit hard in the spring, with large pockets showing up across fields, more widespread than usual. The impact has been noticeable, with lower yields, reduced plant height, and lighter test weights in affected areas. Scattered rain showers during harvest have added to the test weight struggles.

Jackson Hoelker with Skyland Grain in Kingman County says harvest is nearly a month in, with cutting beginning the first week of June. Yields are coming in between 50 and 55 bushels per acre. Protein levels range from 10.5 to 11.5 percent, and test weights, which began around 60 to 63 pounds, have dropped slightly and are now closer to 58.

Hoelker estimates harvest is 85 to 90 percent complete. For the most part, everything that can be cut has been, but growers will need fields to finish drying out before they can finish the rest. While they haven’t seen much sprouting in the area, the biggest challenge this year has simply been how long the harvest is taking to complete.

Jason Ochs, who farms in Hamilton County, reported that harvest began on June 20, but some of the wheat has had several rain showers since it has been ripe. Other areas have received very little rain the past three years. Wheat in the area is short and hard to get it all in the header. The moisture came a little too late, but they did have perfect grainfill weather, cool and rainy. Yields are ranging based on conditions, but test weights have been decent, ranging from 59 to 61 pounds per bushel. He mentioned some wheat streak mosaic virus in the area. Ochs has seen some wind shatter from 40 mile per hour winds. While the wheat is short, the residue out there “makes a huge difference for the next crop,” he said. “It retains moisture and protects from sun and wind.”

Lower cotton prices have really caused American farmers to cut back on production.&nbsp; 

The estimates are out, and the average number is a three percent drop in acres.&nbsp; The USDA also says that there's been a decrease in world cotton ending stocks, but not enough to boost prices. 

And it's not just in the United States.&nbsp; Global cotton production is 2.5% percent below last year also, as prices around the globe reflect the over-supply.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Lower cotton prices 

This is day 6 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest continues across Kansas, with the USDA reporting it halfway complete, behind last year but close to the five-year average. Farmers are still seeing the effects of heavy rainfall, with muddy fields and delayed progress in several areas. Despite the setbacks, farmers across the state continue to make progress as June comes to an end.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is 53 percent complete, well behind 76 percent complete last year but near 56 percent average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 29, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated 24 percent poor to very poor, 28 percent fair and 48 percent good to excellent.

In south central Kansas and north along the I-135 corridor, excessive rainfall on mature wheat has made harvest difficult. As fields start to dry out and combines cut around mud holes, some localized quality issues are being reported.

In Edwards County, farmer Danny Hattrup started cutting around June 17 and is now about two-thirds of the way through harvest. He’s hoping to wrap things up within the next week. Progress has been slowed by rain delays and lingering muddy spots, which have made fieldwork more complicated than usual.&nbsp;

On Monday, the field Hattrup was cutting was yielding around 50 bushels per acre, with a test weight a little below an average year, around 59 pounds per bushel. Hattrup planted two different wheat varieties this season, and both are performing about the same so far.&nbsp;

This past weekend, harvest became a true team effort with help from his daughters, Brooke and Shelby and his son-in-law Cole, all pitching in to keep things moving.

Harvest is underway in Scott County, where Brinlee McNary, grain merchandiser for the Scott Coop, reported they took in their first load on June 20. She said timely spring rains helped the wheat significantly in the area, contributing to a strong start. The elevator has received about 40 percent of its expected volume so far.

Yields have been highly variable, ranging from 40 to 80 bushels per acre, but McNary noted yields are a little higher than in an average year. Protein levels have ranged from 7 to 15 percent, with the average coming in just under 12 percent.

McNary said the main challenges of this harvest have been the wet conditions and the presence of wheat streak mosaic virus, which has affected some fields in the area.

Good friends can have a good time no matter what they are doing together. That is how I ended up helping with a Yoga on the Farm event at Hildebrand Dairy near Junction City recently. The event was organized by CommonGround Kansas, an organization of farm women in Kansas who share information and personal stories about farming and the food they grow.

Yoga on the farm events have been around for years but this was my first time attended one. I was pretty impressed to see around 50 people show up on a hot June weekend to moo-ve through poses on a lush green lawn next to cattle grazing in a pasture. The cows didn’t make anyone too self-conscious because they only stared at the humans in the strange poses for a little while before they got back to snacking on the grass.

Participants in the event got a lot more than a yoga session. Melissa Hildebrand Reed, one of the farm owners, gave a tour of the farm including a sneak peak of two milking robots they are installing. Participants were also able to learn what the dairy cattle eat by building a trail mix version of the ration, and everyone got delicious soft serve ice cream at the farm’s dairy store.&nbsp;

One of my favorite parts of the day was getting to see Melissa and her staff connecting with curious people. She does such a good job of teaching people about the farm, showing them how they take care of their cows and explaining how they make the dairy products you can buy in their farm store or at grocery stores throughout the state.

Looking around the crowd it was obvious some people were hardcore yoga enthusiasts, others were there for the novelty of a unique experience, a great photo op, to see the cows or for the post-workout ice cream. Regardless of the reason, everyone walked away having met a real life dairy farmer, more clearly understanding of how dairy farms work and having a great story to tell their friends about where dairy products come from.

Events like this are so powerful because they demystify farms, give people the chance to ask questions and help the public build confidence in how their food is grown or produced. The farm women who volunteer for CommonGround Kansas are really effective advocates because in addition to being farmers, they are wives, mothers, caretakers, grocery shoppers and so many other roles. They have so many of the same concerns, fears and goals as all of the rest of us — we have so much common ground.

One of the most important needs we all have is to be well fed. Meeting a farmer and realizing you have something in common can completely change your perspective. Having the opportunity and comfort to ask questions about how food is grown can lead to confidence and peace of mind. Opening farms to the public creates more informed, loyal consumers.

My first time at Yoga on the Farm was delightful, and I look forward to more opportunities like it in the future. If you have the opportunity to attend yoga or any other event on a farm, I hope you will take advantage because you will likely learn something new, make powerful connections and may even get a cute selfie with a farm animal.

Ag Minute: Vietnam and Thailand trade 

Nominations are now open for farmers and ranchers to serve on their local USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees. These committees play a crucial role in shaping how federal farm programs are carried out at the local level. 

To be eligible, nominees must either participate in or cooperate with a USDA program or reside in the county.

Ag Minute:  Farm Service Agency county committees

This is day 5 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest is progressing steadily across parts of Kansas, with yields generally around average despite challenges like strong winds, scattered rain and wheat streak mosaic virus. Weather and market conditions remain obstacles. Growers are staying optimistic and focused on finishing the season successfully.

Jess Schwieterman, who farms with his wife Laryce in Hamilton County near Syracuse, reports that this year’s harvest has been going well, despite strong winds and a few rain showers. They received a good November rain, but no winter moisture and a dry March and April until it started raining the week after Easter. The grain fill conditions were excellent, and yields have been right around average, similar to last year. Test weights have held up around 60 to 61 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;

High winds brought in a spring infection of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, turning the fields yellow. Schwieterman mentioned several varieties that have proven to have good resistance - KS Territory, KS Bill Snyder and KS Dallas. Their harvest began on June 20 and is nearly halfway finished. However, others in the area are just getting started. They have been pleased with yields, noting that the longer the fields are in no-till, the better they yield. They also manage for higher yields and have a strong fertility program. The biggest challenge this year has been the depressed wheat prices.

Kris Allen, general manager of Randall Farmers Coop in Jewell County, reports that harvest has been moving steadily across their two locations. Since taking in their first load on June 16, they’ve brought in around 700,000 bushels. Yields are ranging from 45 to 60 bushels per acre, and protein levels are holding solid at 12.6. Depending on the area, fields are about halfway to two-thirds cut, with combines rolling steadily. While this year isn’t quite as massive as last year’s crop, fueled by failed acres the season before, it’s still shaping up to be a strong and successful year.&nbsp;

Over halfway done with harvest, Brian Sieker, a farmer in Rice county, is facing the challenges of a wet season head-on, and staying optimistic.

“Mud is a challenge, but we’re grateful for it,” Sieker said. “Moisture is a welcome sight for our crop.”

On average, fields have produced 40-70 bushels per acre. Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) has taken a toll on both yield and test weight this year, prompting a change in how he’ll select varieties going forward.

“In the future, I will be taking varieties for WSMV; I haven’t in the past,” Sieker said. “We have to protect our neighbors because the investment is huge and margins are thin.”

With winter in mind, Sieker said he’s glad to have residue left in the fields. “It’s nice to have the stubble. It will hold us through the winter.”

Above all, he encourages others to check in with each other and find joy in the season.

“Check on your neighbors," he said. "Enjoy the process. Harvest is a fun but stressful time.”

Kansas Wheat: Harvest day five 

China has approved 106 U.S. pork and poultry processing facilities to resume exports to the country, signaling a renewed boost in agricultural trade between the two nations. The update was posted this week in a Chinese Customs database.

The newly approved list includes 23 pork plants and 83 poultry plants. The facilities will be permitted to export eligible products produced as of June 12.

U.S. meat processors initially gained access to China’s lucrative market following the Phase One trade agreement negotiated under the Trump administration. However, earlier this year, many U.S. meat plants lost export eligibility without public explanation. The reinstatement of these facilities is seen as a positive step for U.S. agriculture exports, especially as American meat producers seek to regain lost market share.

While pork and poultry registrations have been renewed, the status of U.S. beef exports remains unchanged. Registrations for beef plants remain listed as "expired," and no new approvals were announced in that category.

Ag Minute:  China approves pork and poultry plants

Harvest is underway across the state, with progress varying by region. Yields are showing improvement in some areas, while scattered showers and heavy rains have slowed harvest in others. Test weights remain steady overall, though some growers continue to face challenges from wheat streak mosaic virus.

Harvest is in full swing for producers in Russell County, where yields are proving to be a bright spot in the 2025 Kansas wheat harvest. Jayce Dickerson reported their first load went to the elevator on June 18, and as of June 24, they were about halfway through harvest. 

“We’re averaging around 60 bushels per acre,” Dickerson said. “We’re doing really good.” That’s a solid rebound compared to previous seasons—especially three years ago, when the family didn’t cut any wheat at all. “Two years ago, we cut some; last year, we cut most; and this year, we’re cutting it all because it’s actually really good.”

In Wilson County, farmer Randy Small began harvesting around June 12, with a short pause before getting back into the fields on June 19. Now nearing the finish line, he expects to wrap up within the next couple of days if everything goes to plan. Test weights have been averaging around 57 to 58. While the recent moisture could have caused delays, Randy says conditions have remained favorable overall. He planted three different wheat varieties this season and reports that all have performed consistently across the board.

He says the elevator has received around 235,000 bushels, and harvest is about 20 to 25 percent complete. Yields are averaging near 50 bushels per acre, though it’s still early to get a full picture. Protein levels are running lower than usual, currently averaging 11.12, with a wide range from 9 to 14. While harvest began about five days earlier than it did last year, challenges remain.
