Two outstanding Kansas youth were recognized at the Kansas State Fair for their agricultural knowledge and leadership, as Emily Hare or Buhler High School and Ethan Petersilie of LaCrosse High School tied for first place in the 2025 Ag Challenge of Champions.

The statewide competition, hosted by the Kansas Fairs &amp; Festivals Association, brought together top 4-H and FFA members to test their expertise through livestock breed identification, crop and weed recognition, meat cuts, feed analysis, and a comprehensive written exam on agriculture.

Hare and Petersilie emerged from a competitive field, earning identical top scores. Organizers say their performance reflects not only academic excellence, but also a deep commitment to the future of Kansas agriculture.

As a result of their achievement, both winners will receive a $3,000 scholarship to support continued education and leadership development.

“The Challenge of Champions is designed to spotlight the best and brightest in Kansas youth agriculture,” said event coordinator Ty Lewick. “Emily and Ethan exemplify the passion, intelligence, and work ethic that will drive the industry forward.”

The Ag Challenge of Champions is held annually in partnership with the Kansas State Fair.

Hare, Perersilie tie for top honors in Kansas Ag Challenge of Champions

A Texas District Court has returned a decision that gives rights back to property owners and stops radical environmental government. 

 The court ruling will remove the Lesser Prairie Chicken from the list of the endangered species act.  This issue has been going on for many years, and has prevented farmers from working their land, energy producers from extracting oil on their property, and has even prevented civil projects from moving forward. 

Senators Moran and Marshall, and Congressman Mann have been heavily involved in the fight to delist the bird.

Ag Minute: Lesser Prairie Chicken 

&nbsp;President Trump wants to cut or completely stop the American government from incentivizing imports of biofuel, and instead, encourage American biofuel producers to make more. 

 An oil trade group that calls itself American, is in opposition of that and now has the backing of other organizations in pushing back against the President. 

 Fuel refiners want to keep importing cheaper foreign biofuel, and not have to buy American products, which benefits American farmers.  The change in policy could be finalized by the end of 2025.

Ag Minute: Ethanol imports

According to recent beef checkoff-funded research, Texas Tech University found no significant effect on weight gain or related metabolic issues by eating beef in adults. 

That is, as long as it was fresh and not processed, Beef contains high-quality protein and other essential nutrients. 

 This research was the first of it's kind to determine the risk of obesity from eating red meat.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Eating beef and weight gain 

It’s hard to see a yellow school bus and not think about all the hours of my childhood spent sitting on one of those hard seats with a stiff back. I hope the modern versions have a little more comfort than the utilitarian transportation I had to ride uphill both ways.

From the outside, they don’t look much different now that the calendar has turned to September and the wheels on the buses are going around and around every day.

As one of the last stops on the bus route, I don’t remember much about the ride to school. Being among the last to be picked up made the trip pretty short, and I wasn’t fully awake at that hour despite the sleep advantage I had over the kids who got on earlier.

This meant the reverse was true in the afternoon. I was the last or next to last one off the bus, unless I decided to take a shortcut that would allow me to exit first. The only catch was it meant a half-mile walk home. Faster than riding but more effort, too.

Walking meant getting home about 45 minutes earlier than riding the full route. There were multiple considerations that factored into the decision like weather, who was on the bus that day, whether any neighbors were also walking, if I had a full backpack or happened to be toting a saxophone (better than carrying a tuba, not as good as a clarinet).

What was at home also mattered. Chores and homework weren’t a reason to get home earlier than necessary. Video games, TV and snacks were.

Hot weather made the decision easy. It was far better to sweat while walking than get stuck to the vinyl seat of the bus. You’d also have a fine coating of gravel dust on everything because the windows were open as the bus traversed the backroads. Wet or cold weather also made the decision simple as long as the heater on the bus was working.

Riding the bus also extended the day’s education. Since there was a mix of younger and older students, there was a significant exchange of knowledge in the form of innuendo, double entendre and the art of swearing. Thankfully this was way before everyone carried a shiny rectangle capable of broadcasting these tutoring sessions to the world. What happened on the bus stayed on the bus. Mostly.

My days riding the bus to and from school ended about the time my older brother received his driver’s license. There were occasional schedule conflicts that necessitated catching the bus, but for the most part my mass transit interactions were limited to sports and field trips.

Walk or ride? It sounds like a simple decision today, but I was fortunate it was one of the few I had to make each day. It’s prepared me well for adult life, where there’s a steady stream of banal questions like, “What’s for dinner?” or “What are our plans for this weekend?” Turns out, you don’t really stop riding the bus, you just become the driver.

Insight: Walk or ride

The U.S. government sued California to stop it from enforcing stringent emission standards for heavy-duty trucks that President Trump recently declared void. 

 This all started when the Justice Department found out that the California Air Resources Board is defying Federal rules, and won’t allow manufacturers like International (Navistar), Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner, Mack and others, sell trucks in California that don't meet their standards. 

 Remember that those standards are over-ridden by Federal law.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: California emission standards

Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins has been very busy lately. 

 First, she has directed her agency to build a sterile screwworm fly facility in Edinburg, Texas. This would be similar to the one in Mexico, and it's in an ideal location due to the existing infrastructure and close to the Mexican border. The plant will produce up to 300 million sterile flies per week to fight the screwworm. 

 Secondly, Secretary Rollins has put a stop to taxpayer funded solar farms from being built on farmland.  She said that government subsidized green energy projects like solar farms make it more difficult for farmers to compete for farmland, and that's not all.  She said there will no longer be non-American solar panels used in any USDA funded projects.

Ag Minute: Solar farms and prime farmland

MANHATTAN, Kan. — For Charlie and Jeremy Kootz, a father-son team farming near the Kannapolis Reservoir in Ellsworth County, cover crops are more than conservation. For them, it’s about building healthier soils, reducing erosion, protecting water supplies, improving profitability, and extending the grazing season into fall and winter.

“We’re trying to incorporate cover crops to boost soil health and then integrate livestock as much as we can with it,” Jeremy said. “It’s about getting the best of both worlds — stacking enterprises so we’re improving infiltration and soil biology while also cycling nutrients with cattle.”

His father, Charlie, has seen the difference during dry years. “Most of it is for grazing cattle and soil health support. We’ve seen less erosion these past couple years, even when it’s been so dry. That’s been a huge benefit,” he said.

Those on-the-ground experiences line up with research from Kansas State University. A two-year study in Russell County tested how different grazing strategies on cover crops influenced soil conditions, grain yields, and overall farm profitability.

K-State Researchers compared ungrazed plots, the widely recommended “take-half-leave-half” approach, and a more aggressive “graze-out” strategy where up to 90% of cover crop biomass was consumed.

While heavy grazing has often raised concerns about soil degradation, this short-term study found that higher grazing intensities did not significantly reduce soil health indicators under the conditions observed. Soil organic carbon, nutrient cycling, and water infiltration remained stable, and subsequent grain sorghum yields averaged 83 bushels per acre for ungrazed plots and 89 bushels per acre for both moderate and high grazing treatments.

“That’s an important finding for farmers in water-limited regions,” said Logan Simon, K-State agronomist. “We know cover crops can improve soil structure and reduce erosion, but adoption has been slow because of costs and concerns about yield drag. Grazing adds another layer of value. It helps make cover crops profitable.”

Residue amount and plant height were reduced under grazing, but soil surface cover — critical for conserving soil water and reducing erosion — remained similar to ungrazed plots. Even at the higher “graze-out” level, such indicators of soil health as aggregate stability and time-to-runoff were unaffected, showing that the soil protective functions of cover crops persisted despite heavier utilization.

For the Kootz family, the bottom line matters as much as soil health.

“You may not see it in the short term as much as you’d like, but the hope is long term we’ll see soil health improvements and profitability,” Jeremy said. “The cattle are part of that cycle. They’re nutrient cyclers, and they let us make better use of what we’re growing.”

The Kootz family began experimenting with no-till years ago, then gradually added cover crops with support from conservation initiatives like the Kansas Reservoir Protection Initiative, a cost-share program supported by the Kansas Water Office in cooperation with the Ellsworth County Conservation District. By adding grazing, they’ve been able to offset input costs while also protecting water quality downstream.

That connection to water is where K-State watershed specialist Stacie Minson sees cover crops playing a larger role. Working with producers near Kannapolis Reservoir, she helps farmers adopt practices that keep nutrients and sediment on the land rather than washing into streams and lakes.

“If we have a living root in the soil for more days out of the year, we keep sediment and nutrients on the field,” Minson explained. “That helps with water quality protection, but it also helps the farmer. By bringing in cattle, farmers can cover their bottom line while improving water infiltration and reducing the need to feed hay in winter.”

Research co-author Augustine Obour, K-State soil scientist, said those synergies are what make integrated crop-livestock systems so promising.

                    </figure><p>KELSEY STREMEL<br>K-State Extension news service</p><p>MANHATTAN, Kan. — For Charlie and Jeremy Kootz, a father-son team farming near the Kannapolis Reservoir in Ellsworth County, cover crops are more than conservation. For them, it’s about building healthier soils, reducing erosion, protecting water supplies, improving profitability, and extending the grazing season into fall and winter.</p><p>“We’re trying to incorporate cover crops to boost soil health and then integrate livestock as much as we can with it,” Jeremy said. “It’s about getting the best of both worlds — stacking enterprises so we’re improving infiltration and soil biology while also cycling nutrients with cattle.”</p><figure>

                    </figure><p>His father, Charlie, has seen the difference during dry years. “Most of it is for grazing cattle and soil health support. We’ve seen less erosion these past couple years, even when it’s been so dry. That’s been a huge benefit,” he said.</p><p>Those on-the-ground experiences line up with research from Kansas State University. A two-year study in Russell County tested how different grazing strategies on cover crops influenced soil conditions, grain yields, and overall farm profitability.</p><p>K-State Researchers compared ungrazed plots, the widely recommended “take-half-leave-half” approach, and a more aggressive “graze-out” strategy where up to 90% of cover crop biomass was consumed.</p><p>While heavy grazing has often raised concerns about soil degradation, this short-term study found that higher grazing intensities did not significantly reduce soil health indicators under the conditions observed. Soil organic carbon, nutrient cycling, and water infiltration remained stable, and subsequent grain sorghum yields averaged 83 bushels per acre for ungrazed plots and 89 bushels per acre for both moderate and high grazing treatments.</p><figure>

                    </figure><p>“That’s an important finding for farmers in water-limited regions,” said Logan Simon, K-State agronomist. “We know cover crops can improve soil structure and reduce erosion, but adoption has been slow because of costs and concerns about yield drag. Grazing adds another layer of value. It helps make cover crops profitable.”</p><p>Residue amount and plant height were reduced under grazing, but soil surface cover — critical for conserving soil water and reducing erosion — remained similar to ungrazed plots. Even at the higher “graze-out” level, such indicators of soil health as aggregate stability and time-to-runoff were unaffected, showing that the soil protective functions of cover crops persisted despite heavier utilization.</p><p>For the Kootz family, the bottom line matters as much as soil health.</p><p>“You may not see it in the short term as much as you’d like, but the hope is long term we’ll see soil health improvements and profitability,” Jeremy said. “The cattle are part of that cycle. They’re nutrient cyclers, and they let us make better use of what we’re growing.”</p><p>The Kootz family began experimenting with no-till years ago, then gradually added cover crops with support from conservation initiatives like the Kansas Reservoir Protection Initiative, a cost-share program supported by the Kansas Water Office in cooperation with the Ellsworth County Conservation District. By adding grazing, they’ve been able to offset input costs while also protecting water quality downstream.</p><p>That connection to water is where K-State watershed specialist Stacie Minson sees cover crops playing a larger role. Working with producers near Kannapolis Reservoir, she helps farmers adopt practices that keep nutrients and sediment on the land rather than washing into streams and lakes.</p><p>“If we have a living root in the soil for more days out of the year, we keep sediment and nutrients on the field,” Minson explained. “That helps with water quality protection, but it also helps the farmer. Grazing cover crops adds value

The agriculture industry is a small world. It doesn’t always feel that way when you’re in the middle of wheat harvest or out checking calves on a quiet evening, but time and again, I am reminded of how tightly connected this industry really is.

One of those reminders came this summer. There was a week in July when it seemed like everyone in agriculture was in Washington, D.C. I was supposed to be there, too, but storms on the East Coast canceled my original flight. While enjoying the airline’s customer service hold music, I started scrolling through Facebook and noticed how many people in my network were posting about being in D.C. for the week. It seemed like lots of organizations in agriculture had meetings or fly-ins that week.

All those people also meant that flights were full, and it was not a little delay but a full 24 hours before the airline could get me there. By the time I finally arrived, I was frustrated and a little disappointed because I missed all of our meetings with Kansas’ federal delegation. I caught a few good speakers at the tail end of our meetings, but it felt a little wasteful to go all the way there and not visit with anyone.

I decided if I had already made it that far, I wasn’t going to waste the opportunity and headed up to Capitol Hill on my own and without any appointments. Almost immediately, I started to see blue corduroy jackets everywhere because state FFA officers from across the country were in town for their leadership summit. I even ran into the officers from my home state of Wisconsin that I have never met before so I introduced myself.

Right after a photo with the Wisconsin folks, I ran into two Kansas Farm Bureau friends that also serve on the National Sorghum Producers board. I made a few pop-ins to Kansas congressional offices just to say hello and let them know I made the effort glad to come to D.C. They always appreciate knowing you came to visit. Every time I thought I might be wandering the halls alone, another familiar face appeared. It ended up being a really good day of networking, and I am glad I made the effort and didn’t give up on my trip.

That’s the thing about agriculture: even in one of the biggest cities in the world, it still feels like a small town. You can’t walk very far without bumping into someone you know — or someone who knows someone you know. It’s a network built on shared experiences, trust and a deep love for the land and the people who care for it.

That week in Washington, you could feel the strength of agriculture. Farmers, ranchers, commodity groups, FFA students and other young leaders all showed up. We weren’t all there with the same organization or talking about the same issues, but at the heart of every conversation there was the same purpose: to make sure agriculture has a strong voice.

Agriculture really is a small world, but that’s exactly what makes it strong. In a place as big and busy as Washington, D.C., it was comforting to know that no matter where I turned, someone from our community was there — working, advocating, and reminding me that none of us ever truly walks alone.

However, farmers in that area have a big problem, because it's been invaded by rats.&nbsp; &nbsp;A newsletter from the Almond Board of California says that a major rat infestation has caused potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in damage over the past year.&nbsp; 

In the San Joaquin Valley, more than 100,000 acres have been impacted with a loss of over $300 million dollars.&nbsp; The reason....&nbsp; more strict state pesticide regulations have hindered effective rodent management by limiting several options.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Almond farmers and pesticide restrictions

Life on the farm has never been easy. Long hours, unpredictable weather and volatile markets are part of the job, but in recent years, wheat growers and farmers across the country have faced a wave of challenges that go beyond the fields. Rising debt, shrinking margins and isolation have placed enormous strain on rural families. Tragically, farm organizations, including the National Association of Wheat Growers, have reported an increase in suicides among producers, often younger growers without the financial cushion to withstand the hardships of modern agriculture.

Farming is more than an occupation; it is a way of life. But it is also one of the most stressful professions in America. Studies show suicide rates among farmers are two to five times higher than the national average. At the same time, rural communities often lack adequate mental health services, leaving producers to carry their burdens alone.

National surveys reveal that three out of four rural adults believe reducing stigma around mental health is critical. Yet cultural barriers, especially the perception that asking for help is a weakness, continue to silence conversations. For too long, resilience has been defined only as pushing through. True resilience also means recognizing when support is needed.

<b>Building Awareness and Reducing Stigma</b>

Farm groups, nonprofits and mental health advocates are working to break that silence. Campaigns like Farm State of Mind from the American Farm Bureau Federation, Rural Minds and Stigma-Free Mental Health are providing resources tailored to the agricultural community. These efforts emphasize that seeking help is not a failure but an act of strength.

“Your wellness is a key to your farm’s wellness; stress management is a business strategy,” said Sarah Gideon, executive director of Health Innovations Network of Kansas Inc. “More than ever before, we have to look out for one another, to have those hard conversations when we notice changes in our friends and community members.”

Gideon added that resources are available locally, regionally and across the state, and no one should feel they have to manage alone.

Social media has become a valuable tool in spreading the message. Simple posts reminding neighbors that help is just a call away through the 988 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline, or pointing to resources from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, make a difference in connecting farmers to support.

For farmers and rural residents, support is closer than it may seem. Yet cultural barriers, especially the perception that asking for help is a weakness, continue to silence conversations. For too long, resilience has been defined only as pushing through. True resilience also means recognizing when support is needed.</p><p><b>Building Awareness and Reducing Stigma</b></p><p>Farm groups, nonprofits and mental health advocates are working to break that silence. Campaigns like Farm State of Mind from the American Farm Bureau Federation, Rural Minds and Stigma-Free Mental Health are providing resources tailored to the agricultural community. These efforts emphasize that seeking help is not a failure but an act of strength.</p><p>“Your wellness is a key to your farm’s wellness; stress management is a business strategy,” said Sarah Gideon, executive director of Health Innovations Network of Kansas Inc. “More than ever before, we have to look out for one another, to have those hard conversations when we notice changes in our friends and community members.”</p><p>Gideon added that resources are available locally, regionally and across the state, and no one should feel they have to manage alone.</p><p>Social media has become a valuable tool in spreading the message. Breaking the silence: Mental health in farming communities

Somebody's buying it... but who?&nbsp; &nbsp;

Indiana farmland prices are hitting record highs this year, even though crop prices are extremely low.&nbsp; The average price of top-quality farm ground hit $14,826 dollars an acre.&nbsp;

That's a three percent increase from just one year ago.&nbsp; This is interesting.&nbsp; Purdue University did the math, and farmland rent per bushel of corn was $1.32.&nbsp; The cash price for corn is running around four dollars.&nbsp; 

This study didn't specify if it was farmers or investors that was buying the farmland.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Farmland prices

A week ago, I told you about a company that was using American tax-payer money, to try to make Sustainable Aviation fuel from ethanol, but buying that ethanol from Brazil.&nbsp; 

Well, now the President of the National Corn Growers submitted comments on the investigation into Brazil’s unfair trading practices, specifically on ethanol.&nbsp; 

Brazil is actively trying to crush the American corn industry by directly and indirectly hurt American corn farmers.&nbsp; This has been happening for many years, and American corn farmers want it stopped.

Ag Minute: Ethanol and Brazil's unfair trading practices

The United States could have another trade deal.&nbsp; 

This time, it's with the European Union.&nbsp; &nbsp;The EU intends to eliminate tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and provide preferential market access of U.S. seafood and agricultural products.&nbsp; 

That would include dairy products, fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, soybean oil, pork, and other products.&nbsp; 

To top it off, European companies committed $600 billion dollars in U.S. sectors for the next three years.

Ag Minute: EU trade deal

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is celebrating a legal victory.

  That's because they landed protections for cattle farmers and ranchers from unnecessary and ridiculous air emissions reporting requirements.  For the past few years, they had to hire lawyers and sue in court to stop the mandate to file complex, overreaching reports with the federal government about emissions from cattle under not one but two emission laws that are on the books.&nbsp;

AG Minute: Emission reporting for farmers and ranchers

Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins alongside Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Senator Marsha Blackburn, Senator Bill Hagerty, Representative John Rose, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden, announced USDA will no longer fund taxpayer dollars for solar panels on productive farmland or allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in USDA projects. 

Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available. Within the last 30 years, Tennessee alone has lost over 1.2 million acres of farmland and is expected to lose 2 million acres by 2027. This problem is not just in Tennessee, since 2012, solar panels on farmland nationwide have increased by nearly 50%. That is why the Department is taking action.&nbsp;

“Our prime farmland should not be wasted and replaced with green new deal subsidized solar panels. It has been disheartening to see our beautiful farmland displaced by solar projects, especially in rural areas that have strong agricultural heritage. One of the largest barriers of entry for new and young farmers is access to land. Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available,”&nbsp;said Secretary Brooke Rollins. “We are no longer allowing businesses to use your taxpayer dollars to fund solar projects on prime American farmland, and we will no longer allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in our USDA-funded projects.”&nbsp;

“Tennesseans know that our farmland is our national security, our economic future, and our children's heritage. We were honored to welcome Secretary Rollins to Tennessee this week, and I’m grateful for her leadership to defend America’s farmland from foreign adversaries and protect our food supply,”&nbsp;said Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.&nbsp;

“Green New Deal subsidies have distorted the energy market and supplanted American farmland. USDA is taking decisive action which complements policies I supported in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, ending the misuse of taxpayer dollars and upholding our national security interests in energy infrastructure. This action will rapidly eliminate the market distortions and costs imposed on taxpayers by reducing energy subsidies and builds upon the repeal of and modifications to wind, solar, and other “green” energy tax credits in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It will further USDA’s determination to end taxpayer support for unaffordable and unreliable “green” energy sources and ensure the supply chain consists of American products and manufacturing.&nbsp;

Effective immediately, USDA will implement the following programmatic actions:&nbsp;

• For the USDA Rural Development Business and Industry (B&amp;I) Guaranteed Loan Program wind and solar projects are not eligible.

•For the USDA Rural Development Rural Energy for America Program Guaranteed Loan Program (REAP Guaranteed Loan Program), USDA will ensure that American farmers, ranchers and producers utilizing wind and solar energy sources will install units that are right-sized for their facilities. If project applications include ground mount solar photovoltaic systems larger than 50kW or ground mount solar photovoltaic systems that cannot document historical energy usage, they will no longer be eligible for the REAP Guaranteed Loan Program, and priority points will no longer be given for REAP grants.

Food price increases leveled off in the latest economic report out from the government.&nbsp; That hasn't happened in two years.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Here are the&nbsp;categories that were measured.&nbsp; Fresh fruit,&nbsp; poultry, &nbsp;fish and seafood , dairy products , and cereal and bakery products.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Retail prices fell in the first six months for fats and oils and fresh vegetables. Egg prices averaged 38.5 percent higher between January and June 2025 than they did in all of 2024, but that was because of the flu outbreak that killed millions of chickens.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Food prices 

Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) is expanding its agricultural education offerings with the launch of a new John Deere Technician Program, created through a partnership with PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision Equipment.&nbsp;

The program, the second&nbsp;in Kansas, will allow students to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree while receiving specialized training to become certified John Deere service technicians.&nbsp;

“This has been a project in the works for several years,” said Sheldon Stewart, department co-chair of the Agriculture, Business, Computers &amp; Technology Department at HutchCC. “When students complete the two-year program, they’ll graduate with both a degree and John Deere certification, ready to step into the workforce.”&nbsp;

The program is designed to go beyond the college’s existing one-year diesel program. During the first year, students will complete HutchCC’s traditional curriculum. In the second year, they will transition to John Deere-specific training, working directly on equipment and technology at PrairieLand Partners’ dealership near the U.S. 50/K-61 junction. The dealership is expanding its facilities to accommodate the program.&nbsp;

Students will gain hands-on experience alongside certified technicians both in the shop and in the field. Each student must be sponsored by a John Deere dealership, which commits to hiring the student for at least two years after graduation.&nbsp;

“This is truly a hands-on, career-driven program,” Stewart said. “Students come out with little to no debt, a high-demand certification, and a good-paying career that can last a lifetime.”&nbsp;

Industry leaders say the program addresses a critical workforce shortage. PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision, which operate dealerships across Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, are seeking to expand their technician workforce by as much as 25 percent.&nbsp;

Stewart noted that the program also helps strengthen ties between HutchCC and the agricultural community. “Farmers rely on this technology to keep producing, and our students will be trained to keep that equipment running,” he said. “Agriculture isn’t going away, and this program ensures our graduates are prepared for the future—whether that’s with autonomous tractors, electric-powered combines, or other emerging technology.”&nbsp;

The first class of John Deere Technician students began on Wednesday at HutchCC’s South Campus near Yoder, with specialized training taking place at PrairieLand Partners' expanded Hutchinson facility.&nbsp;

August 20, 2025 - The Kansas Soybean Association is calling all soybean farmers in Kansas to enter their competitive soybean crop into the Kansas Soybean Yield Contest. Also open for entries is the statewide Kansas Soybean Value Contest, which analyzes protein, oil and other soybean qualities. Strong participation across the state provides a snapshot of growing conditions in each region and allows friendly competition among peers.

“This contest allows farmers to showcase the practices that maximize yield on their farm” said Dr. Sarah Lancaster, K-State Weed Extension Specialist and an Association board member. “To see how farmers manage challenges to have successful crops in conditions they can’t control is always impactful to see.”

Agricultural sciences company FMC is stepping up this year, joining the Kansas Soybean Commission as a sponsor of the contests. 

“This contest is a great opportunity for us to support KSA and we see the value it brings farmers,” said Brian Laverentz from FMC. “Raising top yielding soybeans is often a systems approach. Many of these farmers rely on FMC products to be effective in raising their crops and we want to show our appreciation for that. We love the comradery these contests bring and getting to recognize and honor farmers across the state.” 

Yield contest districts are determined by region, tillage method and irrigation status, with a total of 18 districts in consideration. Farmers may enter multiple categories, but only one entry per field.

Eligible fields must consist of at least five contiguous acres as verified by the Farm Service Agency, GPS printout or manual measurement. A non-relative witness, either Kansas State Research and Extension personnel or a specified designee, must be present at harvest and should ensure that the combine grain hopper is empty prior to harvest. Official elevator-scale tickets with moisture percentage and foreign matter included must accompany entries to be considered.

The Kansas Soybean Commission sponsors a monetary prize for the top three finishers in each district, as well as an additional $1,000 for the overall dryland and irrigated winners and any who top the new 126.6 bushel-per-acre record, set last year by McClain Family Farms, LLC. Each district winner receives $300, second receives $200, and third receives $100.

Individuals looking to submit a value contest entry should send a 20-ounce sample, which is evaluated by Ag Processing, Inc., to determine the value. Monetary awards are also given to the three highest-value entries.

Farmers may enter both the yield and value contests. The top yield entry and top value entry, as well as one randomly drawn entry who enters both contests, will earn a trip to the 2026 Commodity Classic set for February 25-27 in San Antonio. All participants receive a T-shirt.

They now officially have over a million&nbsp;members nationwide.&nbsp; There are now 9,407 chapters, and 2,060 alumni chapters. States with the largest membership numbers include Texas&nbsp;and California.&nbsp;

 And this is interesting.&nbsp; The state with the most growth? Michigan.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: FFA milestone 

President Donald Trump is signaling a shift in U.S. biofuel policy, proposing to cut back or completely eliminate federal incentives for importing foreign biofuel. Instead, the administration aims to boost production from American-based biofuel producers, a move that could strengthen domestic agriculture but faces strong opposition from oil refiners and trade groups.&nbsp;

The debate has left many U.S. farmers, particularly corn growers in the Midwest, both hopeful and frustrated. Corn producers see major opportunities in the growing market for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which can be made from ethanol. The demand for SAF is expected to surge as airlines seek cleaner alternatives, and one of the first facilities in the U.S. capable of producing ethanol-based jet fuel is preparing to roll out its first batch.&nbsp;

Ag Minute:  Pesticides no longer major threat 

WASHINGTON (AP) —A Federal court on Thursday ordered the Department of Agriculture to restore grants to farming organizations.

The court ruled that six grants must be restored to organizations that lost their funding after several Trump administration Executive Orders and at the direction of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The ruling “sets a strong precedent that could allow hundreds of other grants to be challenged and reinstated,” environmental nonprofit Earthjustice said in a statement.

Plaintiffs included groups that support causes like tree planting, climate-friendly farming practices and growing food in underserved communities.

The total value of the terminated grants was over $34 million, the attorneys said.

“In the wake of this ruling, we hope the USDA stops arbitrarily cancelling grants and contracts without an understanding of the work being done,” said Erin McKee, community food systems program director at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, one of the plaintiffs.
