NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting,&nbsp;the Newton City Commission authorized an application to the Kansas Department of Transportation for a Transportation Alternatives (TA) grant to extend the Sand Creek Bike Path.

The project would extend bike path from the Sand Creek dam south along the creek to Southwest 14th Street. The new path would eliminate the remaining gap in the bike path, creating a continuous off-road trail from Sand Creek Station Golf Course on the south end all the way to Bethel College on the north. It will also create walking/biking access to the new Rhoades Wetland Park on SW 14th Street.

Total cost for the project is estimated at $3.6 million. The TA grant would pay for 80% of eligible costs, and the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program would cover the 20% match.

If the project is funded, the City would need to work with BNSF Railway on right-of-way and other coordination, as the path would cross under the railroad trestles south of First Street.

The grant application will be submitted this week, and award announcements are expected in July. If funded, the project will come back to the City Commission for approval prior to bidding.&nbsp;

Halstead bond passes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Friday night and Saturday night is the Abbyville Frontier Days PRCA Rodeo and BBQ. Abbyville was named the 2022 PRCA Small Rodeo of the Year. Thursday night is the Barrel Racing. Admission on Thursday is free. You need tickets for Friday and Saturday.

McPherson Chamber hosting lenders roundtable

MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — Ray Flickner knows the usual risks farmers take with weather, price volatility and personal safety. He’s also become quite comfortable facing the risks inherent in being an early adopter of unproven technology. The fifth generation farmer raises corn, soybeans, sorghum and wheat alongside research projects on the Flickner Innovation Farm, a former homestead near Moundridge in McPherson County.

Innovation has a long history at the 150-year-old farm, where the land has been used for a dairy, swine operation and commercial catfish farm. In 2019, Flickner and his wife, Susan, embarked on a journey to discover the technology that will drive agriculture forward in the 21st century through collaborations with more than a dozen university, industry and agency partnerships.

Flickner says his uncle drilled one of the first irrigation wells in the area, which has become one of the most senior water rights in the region. The only older one is owned by the city of Moundridge.

“We do have a water problem in the state of Kansas,” Flickner says. “We’ve allocated and appropriated more than what Mother Nature has provided us. I’m lucky that I have a shallow aquifer that does recharge.”

In 2001, Flickner began one of his most ambitious experiments to conserve water. He switched from the proven but resource-hungry flood irrigation to a subsurface drip irrigation system, which involved burying miles of tubing with small nozzles under a field. To date, the farm has converted more than 600 acres to the underground watering system. The conversion has proven efficient, using nearly 40 percent less water than the county average.

Center pivots are also employed on the farm, but they’ve been retrofitted with longer drop hoses, modern sprinkler heads and, in one case, a mobile drip system that places droplets directly on the soil surface. The goal is to lose less water to evaporation and have more of it reach the crops it helps grow.

“Water conservation is very near and dear to my heart,” Flickner says. “In 2023, if you had irrigation in McPherson County, you did pretty good. If you didn’t have irrigation, you did not do too well. It just made a world of difference. The fact you can water a crop is a major insurance policy in years it doesn’t rain.”

Flickner’s willingness to accept the risk of unproven technology on his farm is part curiosity and part background. He was a teacher before he entered the banking industry, where he primarily worked with farmers and ranchers in Kansas and across the nation. 

“Being on the lending desk gives you the opportunity to see different operations,” he says. “Some were very successful, and others were not so successful, financially speaking.”

Flickner took the lessons he learned from lending and has applied them not only to his farm, but his life in general.

“If you’re in the agricultural industry, you’re not risk averse,” Flickner says. “Risk comes with the territory. Now, you have to figure out how to manage that. My entire lifetime, if I hadn’t bought something through leverage, I’m not sure what we’d have. I’d be living in a little shack someplace."

Flickner says his willingness to take chances was the subject of some deep discussions with his late wife, Susan, who didn’t have the same tolerance for debt. Flickner has always viewed leverage as a tool that can help or hurt, and he says he’s fortunate to be in a position where it’s mostly helped. It doesn’t hurt that he views borrowing money in the same way he looks at trying new technology: It’s not necessarily about getting bigger, but making the whole operation better.

“The idea of trying something new and different has always intrigued me,” he says. “Can we move the needle? Can we do things differently to help improve things?”

While subsurface irrigation was a big technological step for Flickner, it was just the beginning of learning how to maximize the natural resources on his farm. The ultimate goal is to grow more grain with less water, less labor, less fertilizer and fewer pesticides. With a focus on the future, Flickner also understands the past and how it’s influenced him today.

“I can’t fault my forefathers for plowing the prairie when they came here because if they hadn’t, I wouldn’t be here today,” he says. “It was a matter of survival. You use the tools and techniques available to you. Hopefully we can get away from the plow.”

Flickner’s ancestors plowed the prairie to raise many of the same crops he does today, but it came at the cost of wind and water erosion on the bare soil when crops weren’t growing. Today, Flickner employs a minimum-tillage practice that leaves the bulk of crop residue in the fields, not only to keep the soil in place but also to conserve moisture. He’s also begun experimenting with cover crops, which don’t have a cash value. Instead, they offer further protection for the soil while also allowing water to penetrate more easily, preventing runoff.

When it does rain enough for runoff to occur, the farm has installed monitoring stations that capture samples of the water that can be tested to see what else is leaving the farm with the water, like fertilizer and other nutrients. Dry conditions have hampered those tests so far.

“The initial focus was water conservation,” Flickner says. “It has grown into a much bigger situation with the cover crop concept and soil health, surface water evaluation. We’ve got to have rain, but that will happen.”

In addition to Flickner’s experience in banking, he and his wife both had backgrounds in education. Their shared passion for teaching helped turn their farm into a classroom where they’ve hosted projects ranging from graduate student research to private companies testing products in real-world conditions.

“I’ve told the researchers this is a blank canvas,” Flickner says. “You can paint it however you think it should be painted, but I do reserve veto power. There’s been a couple of projects that I said, ‘No, we’re not going to do that.’”

Sometimes the projects find success in other areas; for example, one effort used a “drone in a box,” or an unmanned aircraft, that could take off, record crop data from above and land without any human intervention. The company ultimately pursued opportunities outside agriculture after successfully proving it worked on the Flickner Innovation Farm.

As Flickner participates in these projects and meets more researchers, he discovers there’s a lot no one knows — yet.

“The more I do this, the more questions I come up with and the fewer answers researchers can provide,” he says.

Flickner’s efforts to improve his farm have earned him numerous accolades, including the Kansas Farm Bureau Natural Resources Award in 2021 and the 2023 Kansas Leopold Conservation Award, which celebrates extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation. Winners receive a crystal award and $10,000 for their efforts.

“It’s always humbling but rewarding to be recognized by those in the industry for what you’ve done,” Flickner says. “It’s something I’ll remember forever.”

Flickner also hosts field days at the farm, inviting others to see what projects are underway and ask questions about what’s working and what isn’t.

“I’ve heard from a number of people they’ve implemented some things they saw (at field days),” Flickner says. “You’ve got to be willing to share the data. For agriculturists, that can be a challenge. Because of my desire to make things better, I’ve been willing to share that information."

His goal isn’t to win awards or squeeze out a little more profit, but rather to leave the farm in a better state for the next generation — and hope they continue the journey of trying to move the needle.

“You do what you think is right,” he says. “You hopefully leave it better for the grandkids.”

He’s also become quite comfortable facing the risks inherent in being an early adopter of unproven technology. The fifth generation farmer raises corn, soybeans, sorghum and wheat alongside research projects on the Flickner Innovation Farm, a former homestead near Moundridge in McPherson County.Innovation has a long history at the 150-year-old farm, where the land has been used for a dairy, swine operation and commercial catfish farm. In 2019, Flickner and his wife, Susan, embarked on a journey to discover the technology that will drive agriculture forward in the 21st century through collaborations with more than a dozen university, industry and agency partnerships.It Begins with WaterFlickner says his uncle drilled one of the first irrigation wells in the area, which has become one of the most senior water rights in the region. The only older one is owned by the city of Moundridge.“We do have a water problem in the state of Kansas,” Flickner says. “We’ve allocated and appropriated more than what Mother Nature has provided us. I’m lucky that I have a shallow aquifer that does recharge.”<figure>

 </figure>In 2001, Flickner began one of his most ambitious experiments to conserve water. He switched from the proven but resource-hungry flood irrigation to a subsurface drip irrigation system, which involved burying miles of tubing with small nozzles under a field. To date, the farm has converted more than 600 acres to the underground watering system. The conversion has proven efficient, using nearly 40 percent less water than the county average.Center pivots are also employed on the farm, but they’ve been retrofitted with longer drop hoses, modern sprinkler heads and, in one case, a mobile drip system that places droplets directly on the soil surface. The goal is to lose less water to evaporation and have more of it reach the crops it helps grow.“Water conservation is very near and dear to my heart,” Flickner says. “In 2023, if you had irrigation in McPherson County, you did pretty good. If you didn’t have irrigation, you did not do too well. It just made a world of difference. The fact you can water a crop is a major insurance policy in years it doesn’t rain.”Appetite for RiskFlickner’s willingness to accept the risk of unproven technology on his farm is part curiosity and part background. Kansas farm invites innovative experiments

Participants on the northern routes of this year’s Hard Winter Wheat Tour saw some of the better-looking wheat that they’ve seen in years, while participants on the southern routes saw drought-stricken fields. They calculated yields based on head counts and number of spikelets in the heads; however, tour scouts saw stripe rust, wheat streak mosaic virus and freeze damage.

About 69 people from 19 U.S. states, traveled in 18 cars on six routes between Manhattan and Colby, Kan., Tuesday, stopping at wheat fields every 15-20 miles along the routes, as part of the Wheat Quality Council’s 66th Annual Hard Winter Wheat Evaluation Tour.

About half the participants had not been on the tour before. They were shown how to take yield measurements from tour alumni, using the formula provided by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). This formula is based on 2014-2023 Kansas wheat objective yield data. Farmers can calculate their own field estimates using the same formula with instructions at kswheat.com.

Every tour participant makes yield calculations at each stop based on three to four different area samplings per field. These individual estimates are averaged with the rest of their route mates, and eventually added to a formula that produces a final yield estimate for the areas along the routes. While yields tend to be the spotlight of the Wheat Quality Tour, the real benefit is the ability to network among the ‘grain chain.’ This tour gives Kansas farmers the chance to interact with and influence their customers around the globe, on the tour, as well as at the #wheattour24 hashtag.

Tuesday’s cars of wheat tour scouts made 206 stops at wheat fields across north central, central and northwest Kansas, and into southern counties in Nebraska. The calculated yield is based on what scouts saw at this point in time. A lot can happen between now and harvest. The calculated yield from all cars was 49.9 bushels per acre, which was above trendline yields and is representative of areas of the state that are not most impacted by drought conditions. Day 2 of the tour will travel through southwest and south central Kansas, areas that have missed out on any recent precipitation.

Statewide, based on May 1 conditions, Kansas' 2024 winter wheat crop is forecast at 267.9 million bushels, up 66 million bushels from last year's crop, according to NASS. Average yield is forecast at 38 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 7.05 million acres, up from last year’s 5.75 million acres.

For the week ending May 12, 2024, Kansas winter wheat condition rated 13% very poor, 22% poor, 34% fair, 28% good and 3% excellent. Kansas winter wheat jointed was 97%, ahead of 84% last year and 89% for the five-year average. Headed was 73%, well ahead of 48% last year and 43% average. Coloring was 1%.

In addition to Kansas reports, scouts from Nebraska and Colorado met the group in Colby to give reports from their states.

Royce Schaneman from Nebraska Wheat Board reported that USDA estimates the Nebraska crop at 40.8 million bushels, which is up from 36.96 million bushels last year. Yield is estimated at 48 bushels per acre.

A report from Colorado estimated the crop at 72 million bushels, based on a yield of 44 bushels per acre and 2.1 million acres planted. This is lower than the May 1 USDA estimate of 81.4 million bushels, based on slightly higher abandonment. Last year’s production was 74.62 million bushels.

These estimates are for this year’s hard winter wheat crop during this current snapshot in time.

Wheat Tour 24 continues Wednesday with six routes between Colby and Wichita, Kansas.

Hays scored one in the top of the sixth to tie the game.&nbsp; The Salthawks took advantage of two Indian errors in the sixth to plate the go-ahead and decisive run.&nbsp; Hutchinson will face either Maize South or Salina Central in the regional championship game around 6:30 p.m.&nbsp;

A complete recap of both games will be available after the second game is complete.&nbsp;

Sheriff issues scam alert

NEWTON, Kan. — SE 14th Connector (colloquially known as Beer Can Alley) will be closed to all traffic between Logan and Spencer beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, as the contractor, Pearson Construction, begins work on the new SE 10th Street intersection.

The new intersection is being built as part of the Fox Ridge Phase 1 housing development. 

SE 14th Connector is expected to be closed for two weeks as Pearson builds the intersection subgrade and concrete. 

The street will then reopen until asphalt is placed later this summer, which will require a one- to two-day closure. The detour route will be Spencer to First Street to Kansas to SE 14th.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Street closure in Newton starts Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County community is invited to attend United.Read.Connect! on Sunday May 19 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Gowans Stadium.

"We've actually blown it up into a fuller community resource fair this year," said Carla Stanfield with the United Way of Reno County. "We renamed it to&nbsp;United.Read.Connect! We have a really fantastic sponsor, Cargill, who has allowed us to purchase 1000, more than 1000 brand new Scholastic brand books. I like to say, this is an opportunity for our community to have a free book fair."

The Hutchinson Public Library is also helping, so the kids get books that are age appropriate for them.

"The books are going to skew elementary age," Stanfield said. "The rest of the activities are going to be very family friendly, all ages. I think there's going to be a little bit of something for everyone."

The event is rain or shine, so if the weather doesn't allow for it to be outside, it will be inside at the Salthawk Activity Center. In addition to the book, families will receive a free box of food from the Reno County Food Bank, have the opportunity for Touch-a-Truck with police, fire and sheriff’s offices, take home a new outfit for FREE from the Magic Clothes Bus, have a chance to get your face painted, Have fun in a bouncy house obstacle course, and more.&nbsp;Healthy snacks and water will also be available.

"It's completely free," Stanfield said. "It's open to the community. Come and spend some time with us."

Community event coming Sunday with United Way

TOPEKA — The Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force has named 97 schools as recipients of the 2023 Challenge Awards based on criteria met during the 2022-23 school year.

The awards recognize Kansas schools that are making a notable difference in student achievement despite facing significant challenges in their school population. Since its inception in 2002, more than 1,900 awards have been presented to schools across the state.

The Challenge Award recognizes schools for outstanding achievement and uncommon accomplishments based on Kansas assessment results in math and reading, graduation rates, chronic absenteeism rates and the socio-economic status of those taking the test.

Free Shred Day in McPherson Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Salvation Army of Reno County is looking for participants for their Donut Eating Event being held on Friday, May 31 at 9 a.m. The event will be located in front of The Salvation Army thrift store across from Smith’s Market at 200 S Main St.&nbsp; 

“We hope to shine light on the need in our community and to have a fun time by sharing free donuts for everyone who comes out to the event,” said Major Paul James.&nbsp; 

This is also a fundraiser to help send kids to summer camp at the cost of $10/week of camp.&nbsp; Camps consist of Music Camp, Sports Camp, and Character Building Camp based on ages.&nbsp; Of course, the cost of sending a child to camp far exceeds $10 and you can’t feed a child for a week at that cost.&nbsp; 

“We do this because it is an amazing opportunity for our youth," James said. "It's an opportunity to experience an amazing time with kids their ages who become lifelong friends.”

Half of the money raised will also go towards the international work of The Salvation Army in third&nbsp;world countries in honor of the Donut Lassies who served American service men on the front lines during WW1 and part of WW2.&nbsp; The Salvation Army is in roughly 130 countries depending on the political climate.&nbsp; Many governments are unable to support schools and medical services.&nbsp; This is where The Salvation Army steps in to meet those needs by opening Hospitals, Schools, Orphanages and any other way to meet the needs that aren’t being met.&nbsp; 

The Salvation Army is proud of National Donut Day that’s been going on since 1938. It began in Chicago and is now celebrated across the country.&nbsp; The Salvation Army claims the fame of helping create the popularity of donuts after the service men came back from war and were called doughboys, because of their love of the donut.
