RENO COUNTY, Kan. — According to a 6 a.m. Wednesday update from Evergy, around 300 customers are still without power in Reno County as of that point. A reminder that at its peak, there were over 18,000 customers out in Hutchinson alone.

Power has been restored to 95% of the nearly 110,000 customers affected by severe storms in Kansas and Missouri. More than 1,600 personnel are working on power restoration. Evergy crews, contractors, and Liberty Utilities are assisting with the work. Extensive tree damage is being cleared by 175 vegetation crews.

Some customers may be without power until Wednesday evening. Crews will continue to work until everyone’s power is back on.&nbsp;

Around 300 Reno Co. customers still without power early Wednesday

MCPHERSON COUNTY — Tuesday was election day for the extension of a sales tax in McPherson County.

Voters approved the ten year extension of the sales tax with 2,024 in favor and 426 against unofficially. Official results are pending a canvass by McPherson County Commissioners on Tuesday.

The hospitals in McPherson County have benefited from funds from a half-cent sales tax in the county since 2015. 

McPherson Center for Health receives approximately $2.3 million annually, and Mercy Hospital and Lindsborg Community Hospital receive an average of $380,000 annually.​

McPherson County hospital sales tax extension approved

YODER, Kan. — Nineteen new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on May 17, 2024, in a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.&nbsp; KLETC Police Instructor Senior Rob McClarty was the class coordinator for the graduating class, and the commencement speaker for the ceremony was Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Marla Luckert.

Chief Justice Luckert was proud to be one of the first to congratulate the newest members of the profession and to welcome the graduates to the justice system.&nbsp; “Although our titles and our roles vary, we share goals of protecting the rule of law, for seeking justice, enforcing the laws that protect our communities, and upholding the constitutions of the United States and the state of Kansas.”&nbsp;

“I have a deep respect beyond your commitment to our shared goals,” said Luckert, who has served as Chief Justice since 2019.&nbsp; “That respect comes to all of those in your profession, and that respect emanates from my experience not only as a judge but as a citizen, and for my gratitude for what you do for my community, my state, and my country as you provide protection and your service to all of us.”

Under the authority of Vice Provost and Director of Police Training Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting to the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority.

KLETC graduates 325th training class

RENO COUNTY — The Reno County Landfill reported that at the end of the day on Monday, a day after the severe storms hit Reno County, that they took in 728 loads of just brush with a grand total of 250 tons of brush in one day!

The landfill is open 8 am - 5 pm through Saturday this week but will be closed on Monday, May 27, 2024, for the Memorial Day holiday.

A reminder that there are two places to take brush in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

&nbsp; The City of Hutchinson is accepting only tree limbs/brush from Hutchinson city residents at the Carey Park dump site, 8 am - 5 pm through Saturday. The site is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Starting on Thursday, May 23, 2024, Hutchinson city residents can also take their brush to the southeast corner of the Sports Arena parking lot.

Landfill updates load count from storm

NEWTON, Kan. — According to a Tuesday update, beginning Wednesday morning, the City of Newton is bringing in their tree contractor, Alfred's Tree Service, to pick up in Area 1, and City staff will begin in Area 2. 

They understand not everyone will have their limbs ready, especially those whose trees are involved in power lines. Once crews have completed one pass through the city, crews will re-evaluate the situation and make additional pickups as needed. 

Please pile your limbs as well as you can at the curb. City collection trucks can pick up tree pieces no larger than 10 feet long and three feet wide. Alfred's equipment can handle a bit bigger pieces, but limbs are most likely to get picked up if you cut them to that size. 

If you leave limbs larger than that, they may be left behind, but don’t panic, the city of Newton will work with you to get them removed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — Harvey County Emergency Management gave a Tuesday update on storm damage and recovery efforts from Sunday's severe weather event: 

Damage assessments have begun in Harvey County as cleanup continues. 

The Harvey County Appraiser's Office has begun assessing damage in Halstead and Burrton. Data will be collected over the next several days. The information allows the county to submit reports to the Kansas Division of Emergency Management to determine if the county meets monetary thresholds to qualify for various aid and reimbursements.

The American Red Cross is also compiling damage assessments. The Red Cross has distributed clean-up and other supplies in the area. If residents need clean-up supplies, or have had significant damage to their home, contact the Red Cross at 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Residents in unincorporated parts of the county can contact the Harvey County Planning, Zoning and Environmental Department for guidance on permitting for construction. Residents planning repairs that live in the floodplain should also contact the office. Permits are required for all structures. However, roofing and siding replacements do not require a permit. Residents within city limits should contact their respective city office for direction.

The Harvey County Health Department remained closed Tuesday due to the power outage. It will attempt to reopen Wednesday at 8 a.m. All Harvey County Parks are open to visitors, but West Park remains without power. The West Park bait shop is closed until power is restored.

Some roadways remain closed due to downed power lines and debris. Closed roads include, but may not be limited to:

▪️ South Anderson Road from Southwest 36th Street to Southwest 60th Street

▪️ Southwest 14th Street from Cow Palace Road to South Plum Street

The Harvey County Commission unanimously voted&nbsp; on Tuesday to approve a local disaster emergency declaration, formalizing a verbal declaration issued this past Sunday.

&nbsp; CLEARWATER, Fla.&nbsp;—&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/caden-favors/7628">Caden Favors</a>&nbsp;pitched shutout ball into the seventh and Wichita State hit a pair of two-run homers to blow open a close game as the #4 seed Shockers defeated #5 seed UAB 8-2 on Tuesday morning at BayCare Ballpark.

The Shockers advance to take on the winner of Tuesday afternoon's game between #1 East Carolina and #8 Rice. First pitch of the winner's bracket contest will be Thursday at noon CT.

Favors (9-4) was excellent over 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out seven and walking just one. The southpaw got help from a pair of sterling defensive plays in the early going and pitched out of jams in the middle innings to earn the win. In the second inning, centerfielder&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/dayvin-johnson/7596">Dayvin Johnson</a>&nbsp;made a spectacular diving catch in right center to deny Tyler Harrington of extra bases and in the third,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/seth-stroh/7543">Seth Stroh</a>&nbsp;threw out Darryl Buggs at first base after he rounded the bag&nbsp;too far. Bridge repair closes section of Maple Grove Road

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;At the Tuesday Hutchinson City Council meeting, Interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements gave an update on the progress that has been made for storm recovery.

"To get the city functional is the priority," Clements said. "Now that we feel we're in a better place with that, we will now start to focus on the cleanup of the city. And I know that's a little bit hard as you wake up and you see the things that are happening in your area."

Now that the streets are generally safe to go down, people can really start cleanup in a way they may not have been able to before.

"What we've done is we're gonna shift and start to look at cleanup, and we've opened up as of this morning, one drop station, which will be on Redmond Drive in Carey Park, where we will have city staff there from eight to five, six days a week, except for Sunday," Clements said. "They will not be there on the Monday of the holiday as well, which is coming up. We have an area, it's on our website. You can look at the picture."

You can take limbs there for now, but if you aren't able to get to it in the next day or two, they will have another place later in the week.

"On Thursday, we will open a second location and that will be in the southeast corner of the sports arena in the parking lot," Clements said. "Again, it's a city-owned parking lot, so we can use that area. It will be more facing 11th Street in the southeast corner. We'll have it roped off. It will be an area where you can drop limbs and brush and things of that nature."

It is still individual landowners responsibility to get limbs to those drop off points.

City still working on storm recovery

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved beginning the process of rolling back the .35% sales tax for the Hutchinson Sports Arena at their meeting on Tuesday.

"Back in April of 2015, the city submitted a question on the ballot proposing a 0.35 percent sales tax to finance improvements to the sports arena," said City Finance Director Angela Richard. "The sales tax was approved and it began in July of 2015. The sales tax was set to expire 10 years after or whenever the sales tax revenue is sufficient to pay off the bonds. We are now at a point where we have, we will have collected by October 1 enough to pay off the bonds. We will be paying off the bonds entirely and we will expire the sales tax."

With Tuesday's approval, now it's time to do the official work.

"We will publish the ordinance and then we will send a copy to the Department of Revenue prior to July 1 requesting the termination on October 1," Richard said. "Then we will file the ordinance with the county. We will pay the 2014 bond payments in October as well as the 2025 payment at that time. And at that time on October 1, the sales tax rate will be reduced from 1.1 to 0.75 for the city portion of the sales tax."

Sports Arena sales tax to end

RENO COUNTY — The entrance ramp from Sixth Avenue to southbound K-14 is expected to close Tuesday, May 21, and reopen around 10 a.m. Thursday, May 23, weather permitting.

The ramp work is part of a nearly $3.6 million patching project on K-14. The Kansas Department of Transportation project is from the west K-14/U.S. 50 junction north to Yaggy Road.&nbsp;The length is almost 7 miles. The work is expected to be completed around mid-August.

Sixth Avenue ramp to K-14 closed this week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As of 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, the Evergy outage map still shows over 1,500 Reno County Evergy customers without power.

According to a Monday night statement from the utility, power has been restored to over 90% of the 106,000 customers affected by severe storms in Kansas and Missouri. More than 1,600 personnel are working on power restoration. Evergy crews, contractors, and Liberty Utilities are assisting with the work. Extensive tree damage is being cleared by 175 vegetation crews.

For customers who are still without power,&nbsp;most communities&nbsp;will be fully restored by Tuesday evening.&nbsp;In communities where storms caused the most damage&nbsp;-- Hutchinson, Newton, areas of Johnson County (Prairie Village, Shawnee, Overland Park), and North Kansas City (Parkville, Weatherby Lake, Gladstone, Riverside) – some customers may be without power until Wednesday evening. Crews will continue to work until everyone’s power is back on.&nbsp;

Cooling center open in Haven Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — School lunches will increase by a nickel for Hutchinson USD 308. The Board of Education voted to raise the price in a 7-0 vote on Monday night. The increase will take effect for the 2024-25 school year.

"My reason behind it would be the small incremental increase would lessen the financial impact on our families and then obviously even with these proposed rates, we are still significantly lower," Director of Nutrition Jennifer Tatro said. said. "This 5 cent increase isn't going to mean a lot. It's just going to make a small impact before estimating just because we do have so many families that qualify for free or reduced priced meals."

The proposed five cent increase would generate $6,300. Tatro said that the money for the food service budget comes from federal funds and full priced school lunches.&nbsp;

Breakfast prices for students kindergarten-twelfth grade would raise from $1.75 t0 $1.80. All elementary schools will raise from $2.70 t0 $2.75. Middle school lunch prices will raise from $2.85 to $2.90 and the high school lunch prices will raise from $3.05 to $3.10.&nbsp;

Tatro reported to the BOE that 75% of USD 308 students currently receive free or reduced lunch. Reduced rates for lunch and breakfast will remain unchanged.

The increase will take effect for the 2024-25 school year."My reason behind it would be the small incremental increase would lessen the financial impact on our families and then obviously even with these proposed rates, we are still significantly lower," Director of Nutrition Jennifer Tatro said. said. "This 5 cent increase isn't going to mean a lot. It's just going to make a small impact before estimating just because we do have so many families that qualify for free or reduced priced meals."The proposed five cent increase would generate $6,300. Tatro said that the money for the food service budget comes from federal funds and full priced school lunches.&nbsp;Breakfast prices for students kindergarten-twelfth grade would raise from $1.75 t0 $1.80. All elementary schools will raise from $2.70 t0 $2.75. Middle school lunch prices will raise from $2.85 to $2.90 and the high school lunch prices will raise from $3.05 to $3.10.&nbsp;Tatro reported to the BOE that 75% of USD 308 students currently receive free or reduced lunch. Reduced rates for lunch and breakfast will remain unchanged.<figure>

Hutchinson schools to receive slight increase to school lunches

TOPEKA, Kan. — In accordance with Executive Order #20-30, Governor Laura Kelly directed flags throughout the State of Kansas to be flown at half-staff from sunup to sundown on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, in honor of Iola Fire Department Deputy Chief Eric B’Hymer and Emporia firefighter and paramedic Greg Rausch.

“Eric B’Hymer and Greg Rausch dedicated their lives to protecting and serving the people of Iola and Emporia,”&nbsp;Governor Kelly said.&nbsp;“The impact they made on their communities will not be forgotten. My sincere condolences go out to their families and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Deputy Chief B’Hymer was a 24-year veteran of the Iola Fire Department who passed&nbsp;away on May 14 after a hard-fought battle with a service-connected illness.

Rausch, a firefighter and paramedic, was 14-year veteran of the Emporia Fire Department who passed away on May 16 from a service-connected illness he had been battling since 2023.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— Last year, the Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education approved the combining of Lincoln and McCandless Elementary into one school. On Monday night, the BOE approved in a 7-0 vote to keep the name of the school as is.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"And you know as Shakespeare did a pretty good job of exploring, it's important to have a name that everybody can agree on and be okay with and so that was when we were like well how do we do that," Lincoln-McCandless Principal Paul Carver said.&nbsp; "How do we look at our name and be responsive to each school's needs and also be aware of an opportunity that we had so we wanted to look at the important figures in Reno County and Hutchinson. We wanted to acknowledge and embrace the potential that we have a diverse population within our school and so how do we take all of those ideas and come up with what tenets we want to find our suggestions to the board, on changing our names."

Carver suggested to Leslie Specht, Hutchinson USD 308 elementary teacher of the year nominee to lead a project based learning initiative for the entire third grade team on the renaming of Lincoln-McCandless.&nbsp;

The third grade students researched notable figures of Hutchinson and Reno County that they thought would represent their school's values. They also researched the history behind the former Lincoln and McCandless Elementary Schools and took field trips to learn even further.&nbsp;

"The third grade students did a good job of considering what are the values that Lincoln-McCandless students want to be known for," Carver said.

The students narrowed down 15 options into three. The option with the most votes was to keep Lincoln-McCandless as the official name of the school.&nbsp;

Carve said the idea to keep the name as is was&nbsp; sparked from a third grade student that said he was really proud of who "they are" so why would would they need to change the name at all.&nbsp;

"I think that's an important option for us to recognize is that we are two proud families," Carver said.&nbsp;

Lincoln-McCandless keeps name the same

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— Beginning Tuesday, May 21st, 2024, the Carey Park dump site will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

The site will operate Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the exception of Monday, May 27, Memorial Day, when the site will be closed.

Please note: Residents are responsible for disposing of their own limbs. 

To accommodate everyone during this time, The City will not be enforcing debris pick up over the next two weeks.

The Carey Park site is available to City of Hutchinson residents only.

Contractors need to dispose of their debris at the landfill as usual. 

At this time, the Carey Park site is only taking tree limbs. Other household waste, mulch, wood chips, and other bulky items are not permitted.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hutch residents can take limbs to Carey Park

HARVEY COUNTY — Emergency personnel throughout Harvey County continued to examine damage caused by significant storms that battered the county this past Sunday.

The U.S. National Weather Service – Wichita office conducted damage assessments and storm classifications today. Its report concluded that damage in Harvey County was caused by straight-line winds – evidence did not indicate a tornado. The NWS measured wind gusts that reached 72 mph, and the NWS estimated peak gusts may have exceeded 90 mph.

The cities of Burrton and Halstead declared local states of emergency today due to storm damages. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly also issued a state disaster declaration today. Harvey County made a verbal disaster declaration Sunday night.

“It’s been a difficult 24 hours for our residents. They’ve also shown their resilience in this challenging situation,” said Harvey County Commission Chair Becky Reimer. “We’ve had such a tremendous response from our first responders, our local public works employees and our utility teams. I’m extremely proud of their efforts around the clock in response to these storms.”

South Halstead Road between U.S. Highway 50 and Southwest 30th Street was closed Monday afternoon to allow utility workers safety while resetting power lines and poles. There was no timeline for the road to reopen.

The cities of Burrton, Halstead, Hesston and Newton have announced plans for debris clean-up in their communities over the coming days. Harvey County Emergency Management encourages residents to practice safe, smart handling of debris to avoid injury.

No storm-related injuries have been reported to Harvey County Communications through the duration of the severe weather event. However, several buildings were damaged throughout the county.

Harvey County damage likely straight-line winds

HALSTEAD, Kan. — The City of Halstead declared a local state of emergency in the city council chambers on Monday afternoon. A severe thunderstorm went through town on Sunday evening and caused damage to many trees and several homes.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"We've already dispatched all of our crews and everything but it's a way to shore up any other permissions we need to get to work to try to clean the city up and eventually lead to receiving some funding from federal or state governments for assistance," Mayor Dennis Davis said. "But we're not letting that stop us. We are getting started. There's a lot of volunteers in town and we appreciate their presence and their help and everybody just needs to clean their yard up. That's where where we are at."&nbsp;

Davis said the National Weather Service office in Wichita is gathering data to figure out if Halstead got hit by a tornado or not.&nbsp;

"We've definitely seen some tornadic-type damage and heavy wind damage so we are waiting for their assessment before we really identify what we think we got hit with," Davis said.&nbsp;

According to Harvey County Government, no injuries have been reported at this time. Emergency Management is not allowing controlled burns in the county today.&nbsp;
