TOPEKA — Governor Laura Kelly today announced that 12 communities and organizations will receive a combined $78,800 to allow 20 new murals and public art projects to revive public spaces and engage residents and visitors.

One area Hutch Post location has been selected to receive funding. Inman's Museum Association will receive $7,500.&nbsp;

“Murals and public art installations welcome people to our rural communities while developing community pride and showcasing the rich history of our state,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “Investments in this program allow art to flourish and enhance public spaces for visitors and communities alike.”

The Office of Rural Prosperity’s Rural Mural Public Art grant program awardees are in communities across the state with a population of less than 15,000. The murals will highlight community gathering spaces and tourist attractions.

Each project requires a one-to-one match from the community, with the smallest of communities allowed to match the grant with in-kind donations. Seventy-five percent of the grant funding will be gifted upfront as several projects plan to start in the next few weeks.&nbsp;

“Working with local partners to develop compelling places across the state is one of the initiatives detailed in the Kansas Framework for Growth – our state’s economic development strategic plan,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “The Kelly-Toland administration is keenly focused on strengthening community assets that help keep younger Kansans interested in staying here. Every completed Rural Mural is a testament to that commitment.”

Director of the Office of Rural Prosperity added her thoughts.&nbsp;

“This round of Rural Murals and Public Art applications included so many communities that have not ever received funding from Commerce before,” Director of the Office of Rural Prosperity Trisha Purdon said. “We are excited to see so many empowered communities that are excited to welcome visitors and residents to witness these beautiful and creative visual expressions of community identity and history.”

Governor Kelly announces funding amounts for 12 murals in rural communities

Combines started rolling in southern Kansas over the past few days after barely getting started last week. Harvest started earlier than normal because the wheat has matured early and farmers are trying to beat upcoming storms.

Overall, yields are better than expected in the area. Although the first quarter of the year was very dry, recent rainfall has helped with grain fill, and this year’s crop is looking to be much better than last year’s dismal crop. Initial reports of test weights are 62 to 63 pounds per bushel, and proteins are averaging 11 to 12 percent.

USDA/NASS estimated the crop at 267.9 million bushels in its May 1 forecast. Their June 1 estimate will be issued next week. Last year’s Kansas wheat harvest resulted in 201.25 million bushels, with abandonment at 29 percent, the highest since 1951.

Wheat crop conditions in Kansas as of June 2 were 34 percent poor to very poor, 32 percent fair and 34 percent good to excellent.&nbsp;Mature was 25%, well ahead of 1% both last year and average.

Harvest is expected to progress over the weekend, although scattered rains, thunderstorms, wind and hail are in the forecast.

Kansas Wheat Harvest begins

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women's basketball program announced Friday that Ava Jones will medically retire from basketball.

Jones was injured in a car/pedestrian accident in Louisville, Kentucky on July 5, 2022. Jones was a Nickerson High School student in town for an AAU basketball tournament at the time.

She will remain on scholarship and continue to attend the University of Iowa.

The purpose of the commission is to&nbsp;receive applications for, and issue licenses to, brokers and salespersons, as provided in the real estate brokers' and salespersons' license act.

The Commission consists of five members appointed by the Governor,&nbsp; one from each of the four congressional districts and one member at-large. Each member is appointed for a four-year term.

Hutchinson real estate agent reappointed to state commission

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A bill was signed this week to allow microbreweries to do more distributing of their own product.

"This was a real grassroots movement that came up from the brewing community," said Democratic Rep. Jason Probst of Hutchinson. "There were a handful of brewers and one in particular who spearheaded it and he was saying you know if we don't get this changed I'm going to go out of business because I can't move enough of my own product and at the beginning of the year I was thinking this is probably a two or three year project to get that done but we were able to get it done in one year."

The bill allows microbreweries to get wider product lines in places other than the bars they own.

"Basically a brewer that made beer had to go through a distributor who then had to sell it to retail outlets like liquor stores and bars and restaurants," Probst said. "If you ever notice when you go to a place there's the local brewers might have a dozen beers if you go into the brewery but if you go to a restaurant or a bar you can only find one of those beers and that's because of that distribution system. This allows the brewers to sell their product directly to catered events to bars and grills in their area. There is a cap on it at a thousand barrels which is most brewers say that that's going to be fine for them but it's really loosening that regulation and allowing that industry to thrive."

Jason Probst of Hutchinson. "There were a handful of brewers and one in particular who spearheaded it and he was saying you know if we don't get this changed I'm going to go out of business because I can't move enough of my own product and at the beginning of the year I was thinking this is probably a two or three year project to get that done but we were able to get it done in one year."The bill allows microbreweries to get wider product lines in places other than the bars they own."Basically a brewer that made beer had to go through a distributor who then had to sell it to retail outlets like liquor stores and bars and restaurants," Probst said. "If you ever notice when you go to a place there's the local brewers might have a dozen beers if you go into the brewery but if you go to a restaurant or a bar you can only find one of those beers and that's because of that distribution system. This allows the brewers to sell their product directly to catered events to bars and grills in their area. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson attorney Matt Bretz, in his capacity as a member of the national board of MADD, visited Washington D.C. to talk to the Kansas delegation about ongoing priorities for MADD. One of those has already passed and is in the process of being implemented. The HALT ACT was signed in 2021.

"HALT is, it was passed a couple of years ago, and it's currently in the rulemaking process," Bretz said. "It requires new automobiles to be equipped with passive technology to detect and prevent drunk and drugged driving. A completely passive equipment, just by sensors in the car, driver sits down, and if it senses either by touch or by breath that you're over 0.08, it won't allow the car to be started. It's different than an interlock."

This technology has been available for a while, and would need to be in new vehicles starting in model year 2026.

"That was passed two years ago as part of the Infrastructure Act, but the rulemaking has gone very slowly," Bretz said. "It's interesting, it's technology that's been around since 2006, but automakers don't want this as OEM equipment. They'd like to sell it as an option that, you know, you paid thousands of dollars extra to get the convenience package that has it. It's much more profitable to automakers to sell it that way than to have it as OEM equipment."

Obviously, MADD wants this as standard, because if people have to pay extra for it, some won't.

"It's stuff that if you have to pay $3,000 or $5,000 extra for an option, many people aren't going to do it, kind of like the backup cameras, which we all have had on new cars since 2014," Bretz said. "It was technology that was around for 10 or more years before then, but it wasn't until 2014, after a doctor backed over his child in the driveway, that there was legislation that required this to be automated in every car. You don't have to do anything with it, you put your car in reverse and automatically the backup camera comes on. It costs $6. But it was equipment that they charged hundreds of dollars for when it was an option."

The deadline for the rule to be finished is&nbsp;November 15.

Bretz checking on HALT Act progress on Capitol Hill

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss still sees a potential backward step in the economy overall on the horizon.

"I think it's the beginning of the sinking of that stone, but it's going to take a while," Goss said. "The federal government is running a deficit that could choke a horse. We're talking about, I mean, this is a wartime deficit in a peacetime economy. So what's held up is government, government employment. We're seeing that's where the real growth has been is in government, also leisure and hospitality, which is a good thing. Not saying government's a bad thing, but that's where the government, the federal government, particularly is spending. That's we're seeing more and more growth there, for example, in Kansas, about double the growth in government jobs as opposed to non-government jobs. So it's not what we'd like to see."

Europe's central bank cut interest rates on Thursday, but Goss isn't sure that the U.S. Federal Reserve will follow suit. These comments came before the European announcement.

"If we have a downturn, we will see some rate cuts," Goss said. "But short of that, we're looking at higher rates into 2025."

However, the Fed does meet soon, so they have a chance to make a move, if they want to.

"When the Federal Reserve meets next week, they're going to be, they won't be silent, they'll be talking,"&nbsp; Goss said. "It won't be what, what most Americans in Kansas want to hear, they want to see, we're going to see growth. They're going to be talking higher rates and concern about inflation."

Goss does think the economy is too weak to be raising rates, so they'll probably stand pat for now.

Goss: Government growth is propping up economy

BUHLER, Kan. — In 1999, a high school senior project in Buhler, Kansas, took root.&nbsp;

In 2005, Daniel led IdeaTek into telecommunications by purchasing and improving failing dial-up and DSL companies. This success funded the first fiber-to-home service in Buhler in 2007, followed by Inman, Haven, Yoder, Mount Hope and Bentley. ​​​

The company has been through many different growth cycles – from dialup and DSL to rural cell towers and leading earlier initiatives in small-cell mobile networks. HARVEY COUNTY — Coupon booklets will be available Friday for the Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. 

The booklets make fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs more accessible for Harvey County residents 60 and older that meet income requirements. 

Caregivers can also apply for a booklet by proxy for those they care for through the Department on Aging (316-284-6880).

Booklets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Newton Recreation Commission on Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Harvey County Farmers Market booklets out Friday

The world is holding its breath this year for the Kansas wheat harvest to kick into full swing, but 150 years ago, the first harvest of Turkey Red wheat was largely dismissed as a small experiment. The introduction and adoption of this single variety, however, would forever change the wheat industry and establish the genetic lineage for the wheat Kansas farmers will harvest this summer.&nbsp;

“Probably no year holds more significance to the wheat industry in Kansas than 1874,” said Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations. “The Mennonite farmers who emigrated that year to Kansas from Ukraine helped develop Kansas into a rich and productive agricultural economy. These families brought with them Turkey Red winter wheat, and — as they say, the rest is history.”&nbsp;

The Kansas territory officially became the state of Kansas on January 28, 1861. Just months before the start of the Civil War, frontier farming looked very different than today’s modern farmsteads. The soft wheat planted in Western Europe was considered ill-suited for Kansas, requiring substantial labor to plant by hand and to thresh by beating wheat heads against rocks.&nbsp;

The 34th state changed quickly, thanks to the signing of the Homestead Act in 1862, which gave citizens or future citizens up to 160 acres of land if they lived on and improved it for five years. The first train tracks from east to west were laid the next year. Homesteaders loaded into covered wagons and train cars, answering the call to “Go West, young man” and carve out new lives for themselves and their families on the Kansas prairie.&nbsp;

One hopeful homesteader, Bernard Warkentin, a Mennonite miller from Crimea, settled near Halstead, Kansas, in 1871. He carried the seeds of Turkey Red wheat, a hard winter wheat variety that was tremendously successful in Eastern Europe. The hardy variety was planted in the fall and could be harvested in the summer, allowing it to take advantage of timely moisture and withstand the cold Kansas winters that left settlers burning buffalo chips to stay warm. The first field of Turkey Red wheat was planted in Marion County in 1873 and harvested in the summer of 1874.&nbsp;

That same year would change the trajectory of Kansas agriculture forever, thanks to 12,000 German Mennonites who left modern Ukraine specifically to settle in Kansas at the invitation from the railroad and with promised religious freedom from the young state government.&nbsp;

Like Warkentin, his fellow Mennonites brought their favorite wheat, toting hand-picked seeds in large jars and sacks. They also brought game-changing farming practices like leaving fields fallow in between planting cycles, applying fertilizer to fields and using large threshing stones to separate the wheat kernels from the stalks that enveloped them.

Turkey Red was revolutionary, but it took time for the milling industry to adjust from milling soft wheat with lower protein and weaker gluten (think soft cookies) to the new hard red winter wheat, which had higher protein and stronger gluten (think of a loaf of bread that holds its shape). Just as the farmers discovered the hardiness of Turkey Red and the millers unlocked its better quality, the variety quickly spread and took over Kansas agriculture.&nbsp;

By 1919, Turkey Red wheat constituted more than 82 percent of planted acres in Kansas. It remained the most popular variety until 1939 — maintaining its dominance as superior genetics for crossing into new varieties.&nbsp;

“There was simply nothing like it at that time,” Harries said. “Turkey Red became the most desirable wheat in the world, and Kansas became the world’s breadbasket.”&nbsp;

Today, half of Kansas wheat varieties can trace their lineage back to Turkey Red. Wheat breeders improved on Turkey Red wheat, establishing shorter modern varieties with built-in disease resistance and improved yield potential while maintaining milling and baking quality. Thanks to Turkey Red, Kansas farmers will harvest their 150th hard red winter wheat crop this summer, and billions of bread loaves and other products will be baked to feed families around the world.&nbsp;

 </figure>JULIA DEBES Kansas WheatThe world is holding its breath this year for the Kansas wheat harvest to kick into full swing, but 150 years ago, the first harvest of Turkey Red wheat was largely dismissed as a small experiment. The introduction and adoption of this single variety, however, would forever change the wheat industry and establish the genetic lineage for the wheat Kansas farmers will harvest this summer.&nbsp;“Probably no year holds more significance to the wheat industry in Kansas than 1874,” said Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations. “The Mennonite farmers who emigrated that year to Kansas from Ukraine helped develop Kansas into a rich and productive agricultural economy. These families brought with them Turkey Red winter wheat, and — as they say, the rest is history.”&nbsp;The Kansas territory officially became the state of Kansas on January 28, 1861. Just months before the start of the Civil War, frontier farming looked very different than today’s modern farmsteads. The soft wheat planted in Western Europe was considered ill-suited for Kansas, requiring substantial labor to plant by hand and to thresh by beating wheat heads against rocks.&nbsp;The 34th state changed quickly, thanks to the signing of the Homestead Act in 1862, which gave citizens or future citizens up to 160 acres of land if they lived on and improved it for five years. The first train tracks from east to west were laid the next year. Homesteaders loaded into covered wagons and train cars, answering the call to “Go West, young man” and carve out new lives for themselves and their families on the Kansas prairie.&nbsp;One hopeful homesteader, Bernard Warkentin, a Mennonite miller from Crimea, settled near Halstead, Kansas, in 1871. He carried the seeds of Turkey Red wheat, a hard winter wheat variety that was tremendously successful in Eastern Europe. The hardy variety was planted in the fall and could be harvested in the summer, allowing it to take advantage of timely moisture and withstand the cold Kansas winters that left settlers burning buffalo chips to stay warm. The first field of Turkey Red wheat was planted in Marion County in 1873 and harvested in the summer of 1874.&nbsp;That same year would change the trajectory of Kansas agriculture forever, thanks to 12,000 German Mennonites who left modern Ukraine specifically to settle in Kansas at the invitation from the railroad and with promised religious freedom from the young state government.&nbsp;Like Warkentin, his fellow Mennonites brought their favorite wheat, toting hand-picked seeds in large jars and sacks. They also brought game-changing farming practices like leaving fields fallow in between planting cycles, applying fertilizer to fields and using large threshing stones to separate the wheat kernels from the stalks that enveloped them.Turkey Red was revolutionary, but it took time for the milling industry to adjust from milling soft wheat with lower protein and weaker gluten (think soft cookies) to the new hard red winter wheat, which had higher protein and stronger gluten (think of a loaf of bread that holds its shape). Just as the farmers discovered the hardiness of Turkey Red and the millers unlocked its better quality, the variety quickly spread and took over Kansas agriculture.&nbsp;By 1919, Turkey Red wheat constituted more than 82 percent of planted acres in Kansas. It remained the most popular variety until 1939 — maintaining its dominance as superior genetics for crossing into new varieties.&nbsp;“There was simply nothing like it at that time,” Harries said. “Turkey Red became the most desirable wheat in the world, and Kansas became the world’s breadbasket.”&nbsp;Today, half of Kansas wheat varieties can trace their lineage back to Turkey Red. Wheat breeders improved on Turkey Red wheat, establishing shorter modern varieties with built-in disease resistance and improved yield potential while maintaining milling and baking quality. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Free-market economist Michael Austin is not positive about the proposal that the Kansas Legislature use STAR Bonds to try to lure the Kansas City Chiefs across the state line.

"The Kansas Legislature is using their special session to talk about billionaire bailouts instead of tax relief, and I think that is a fourth down fiasco," Austin said. "Kansans were clear, and I think that they want the Kansas Legislature to stay focused on tax relief for everyone, not just, you know, huddling up to billionaires. And so, you know, they're looking at trying to pass their fourth tax relief bill, but instead, yeah, we're talking about this new football stadium. My question is, what happened to capitalism? What happened to letting billionaires just build their own stadium and not do it off the backs of taxpayers? If they don't take a time out and reassess, they're going to punt tax relief and they're going to leave Kansas fans holding the stadium invoice."

It's not that Austin doesn't like the idea of moving the Chiefs, but using government funds to do it isn't the way to gain ground.

"It deserves celebration, but we also have to recognize that this is a private business," Austin said. "When you subsidize it with paychecks from folks who are, let's say, in Wichita or in Hays or in Great Bend, folks who will have no plans of ever going to a stadium, that's completely inappropriate. You know, no matter how much you might love Patrick Mahomes throwing touchdowns, you know, you're using your paycheck to pay for, you know, a stadium, right? That in no way, shape, or form is right, and it should be avoided."

It still isn't clear how spending time on the Chiefs proposal is going to get them closer to a tax agreement.

"I think this is a case of lawmakers getting too far ahead of their skis. The focus should be on tax relief," Austin said. "That was what Speaker of the House Dan Hawkins said, and I am 100% behind them. That's what you guys came in for was tax relief. That's what you need to stay laser focused on. If you divert your attention to any other matter that is not providing property sales and income tax relief to Kansas families, you're going to be feeling it, you know, either come, you know, election time, or you're going to be letting your constituents down.

The legislature is scheduled to return on June 18.

Economist says STAR bonds Chiefs proposal needs a 'time out'

TOPEKA, Kan.&nbsp;- The Kansas State High School Activities Association has selected sites for the 2025 KSHSAA state basketball championships. All seven sites have hosted at least once previously.&nbsp; &nbsp; After hosting the 1A Division I state championships last season, the Colby Event Center has been selected to host the 1A Division II state championships in 2025. The 2A tournaments will return to their traditional home at Bramlage Coliseum after a year&rsquo;s hiatus.&nbsp; &nbsp; The KSHSAA continues to have a strong relationship with Barton Community College who has hosted the 1A Division II Tournaments the last three years. Colby will be the fourth community to host the 1A Division II state championships since the class split into divisions in 2011. In 2019, Class 1A held a single tournament without divisions. &nbsp; &ldquo;The student-athletes, coaches, school communities and officials who participated in the 1A Division I tournament in Colby last year had a great experience,&rdquo; KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick said. &ldquo;Colby was given a chance last year and hosted great championship tournaments. We know they will do the same in 2025. 🏀 KSHSAA announces 2025 state tournament sites

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Director of Finance Angela Richard spoke to the Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday about changes coming to utility billing in the city.

"We are working to upgrade our <a href="https://selfservice.hutchgov.com/css/default.aspx">waterbill.hutchgov.com</a> website for better user experience," Richard said. "The new website will have a cleaner layout and simplify the menus. We are working through all of the testing and hope to release that within the next couple weeks. Customers can still pay with any method they did before, whether that was in person, over the phone, bank draft or mail."

The new site, once it is live, should allow new payment methods.

"We'll have Apple Pay, Google Pay, Paypal, Venmo and soon we will have text to pay," Richard said. "Unfortunately, with those changes, users will have to create a brand new login and they will have to set up their automatic credit cards again."

Bank draft is not changed with the rest of the changes.

"The city realizes that this is inconvenient," Richard said. "We're going to work to provide instructions for users on how to do so. We will work to help them set up their accounts. We will also work to waive late fees or try to avoid late fees for people who were on automatic credit card payment and have to set them up again. We will work to do text messages and emails and phone calls to let people know if they're on automatic credit cards, they need to go into the new website and set them up again."

The city will give Hutch Post additional information once the new site is live.

Reno County warns against ticks

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At the request of council member Jon Richardson, the Hutchinson City Council will officially discuss whether or not to move their meetings to the evening later this month.

"I would like for us to have it on an agenda item to take a vote on it and see if we need to move forward past that subject," Richardson said. "I would like to see it something that we move to the evenings, in the future, so people can plan their schedules around it. I think it's important for us to weigh in on it, make a decision and move on."

Mayor Greg Fast directed staff to put that subject on the next meeting's agenda.&nbsp;

"We should do yes or no, is there interest in doing this," Richardson said. "I would say we want to put a start date at least out in September, because people have already planned their summer schedule. I think we need to talk about it, not during comment."

The next meeting of the Hutchinson City Council is Tuesday, June 18 at 9 a.m. at City Hall.

Date set for discussion on moving Hutch City Council meetings

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East 11th Avenue and North Lorraine.

In 1968, Bob Bottomley lived in Wichita and had just spent 9 ½ years with Import Volkswagen. He wanted to go out on his own, so he purchased Fearl Cadillac-Oldsmobile in Hutch when Phillip Fearl died. The first photo shows the Grand Opening Day ad from the news at 118 W. 2nd on Jan. 16, 1969.

In 1972, Bob decided to add the Datsun line to the inventory. The second photo shows the first trainload of Datsuns arriving in Hutch.

Meanwhile, on motor row, Stuart Conklin Buick was at 110 W. 2nd as a competitor. The third photo shows that dealership in 1963.

In 1973, Bottomley built a new showroom for his dealership on the city's outskirts at 1400 E. 11th, a new concept. The fourth photo shows an aerial of the dealership in 1975.

In 1982, the Conklin family made Bob Bottomley an offer he couldn't refuse and they purchased the 11th and Lorraine facility. It became Conklin Cars. The fifth photo shows the 1400 E. 11th auto dealership today, still going strong and now known as the Conklin Automotive Group with locations in Newton and Salina also.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Master Gardeners Garden Tour is Saturday in Reno County.

"We've got Gardener's Dream at 3007 Northwestern," said Kay Deaver with the Master Gardeners. "Then we've got Natives Pathway at 3004 Cornell. Highlands Hidden Treasure at 10120 East Snokomo. Quilt and Iron Garden here in town at 119 West 9th. And then the HutchCC Demo Garden behind the Student Union where parking is."

You can get advanced tickets from any Master Gardener for $10, or pay $12 at any of the gardens on Saturday. The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"We have to put flowers in the garden," Deaver said. "Those flowers are expensive. They're getting more expensive every year. We do get some test flowers from Ball, but what we use the funds for is to buy the flowers. Then we also have some major projects. Then, of course, we fund the flowers and the plants in the demonstration gardens, both at the HutchCC campus and at the Reno County Extension Office. Then we have garden programs at the Hutchinson YMCA and the Garden for Good out at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. Plus, we have a monthly educational booth at the Reno County Farmer's Market every third Saturday. And then we have Lunch and Learn educational programs. And then we're available for small groups anytime."

There are also prizes and vendors at the Demo Garden Saturday.

"We have not only the Garden Tour, but we have a fair, so you can come shop at HutchCC," Deaver said. "All of those vendors and some of the local nurseries have given prizes. So you'll be able to sign up, and there's a contest, and there's entry forms at the gardens. You can sign up at every single garden. Plus, we've brought back from 2019, we're having the scavenger hunt. So you can pick up a piece of paper, and every garden, there's things to find. And every garden has little, oh, things like maybe there might be a rabbit, a statue of a rabbit, or a thing, a metal flower, and if you find those things, you write down the, you know, what garden you found it in. When you're done, you turn it in and put your name and a phone number, and you could win a prize.&nbsp;

Master Gardeners Garden Tour is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hundreds of breeds of dogs will compete at the 2024 free Sunflower Cluster of Dog Shows at the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sunflowerclusterdogshows/">Kansas State Fairgrounds June 6-9.</a>

"The Sunflower Cluster of Dog Shows is a cooperative effort among the Hutchinson, Salina and Wichita Kennel Clubs and the Wichita Dog Training Club," Ruth Lloyd, member of the Hutchinson Kennel Club, said. "We all work together on that, and they have competition. It's sanctioned by the American Kennel Club and they have competition for conformation which is like what you see on <a href="https://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/">Westminster show</a>, except not quite as fancy. We don't generally dress in evening wear."&nbsp;

Other events at the shows include obedience and rally obedience, best in breed, best in show and dock diving. For conformation events, a dog must be a purebred.&nbsp;

"The dog has to be AKC registered and in order to go to all the trouble of that of seeking a championship, the owner has to believe that the dog is a good specimen of its breed standard,"&nbsp; Lloyd said.  "Every recognized breed has a breed standard that tells you what that dog is supposed to be both in terms of appearance and in terms of temperament and so forth."&nbsp;

There are trophies for various levels throughout the competitions.&nbsp;

"What trophy is available depends on how many are in entered your breed and whether somebody in particular wanted to sponsor that trophy," Lloyd said.&nbsp;

Seven different types of dog breeds are split into different categories that include, sporting, herding, working, hound, terrier, toy and non-sporting.&nbsp;Lloyd said usually the best in breed category trophy can be a dog related-item or cash for their win. 

"Each of those win the best of breed winners and each of those groups compete against each other,"Lloyd said. "The judge will pick first through fourth out of each group and the first place winner in each group gets a trophy and then the big trophy of course is best in show and there are two best in show."

The seven winners out of each breed group will compete for best in show.&nbsp;

"That's the big trophy and then there is a reserve best in show. There also is an owner-handle best in show and reserve," Lloyd said "Owner handle is strictly limited to those dogs who&nbsp; actually are shown by their owners, no professional handlers in that event."&nbsp; &nbsp;

Lloyd said children are encouraged to attend the shows but to make sure parents caution their child on approaching other dogs.

"We do ask parents, please don't let your child run up to a strange dog unless you first check with the dog's owner and make sure that's okay," Lloyd said. "That's a good practice no matter whether you are at a dog show or at the park, you know."

A cardiology, radiology and ophthalmology clinic will be on site. Some additional events at the shows include a 4-6 month old puppy beginner competition and a junior handler clinic with the professionals.&nbsp;

Lloyd said the AKC only allows kennel clubs to do two shows per year. The Hutchinson Kennel Club show will be on Thursday, June 6 and Sunday, June 9. The Salina Kennel Club show is on Friday, June 7 and the Wichita Kennel Club show is on Saturday, June 8.&nbsp;
