Lucille A. ‘Lucy’ Henry, 91, of Hutchinson passed away peacefully, November 13, 2022, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. She was born June 24, 1931, in Moundridge, to Jacob and Mary (Goering) Kaufman.

Lucy graduated from Moundridge High School, Moundridge, and Bethel College, North Newton, with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. Lucy displayed her passion for music by teaching grade school music. Lucy was artistic and a good cook. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters. Lucy was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On July 19, 1959, she married Arthur F. Henry Jr. in North Newton. They shared 63 years of marriage before her passing.

Lucy is survived by: husband, Art Henry Jr., Hutchinson; daughter, Krystal Krehbiel (Brad), Buhler; granddaughters, Kourtney Lane (Daniel), Hutchinson, Kacey Jost (Zach), Buhler; great-grandson, Kameron Henry Lane, Hutchinson; one sister, Carol Ratzlaff (Johnny), Newton; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; a son, Kevin Henry; and ten siblings.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at Trinity United Methodist Church, with Reverend Dr. Michael Tomson-DeGreeff officiating. Burial will follow at Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary.

Three more victories last week and the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team climbed the national rankings for the second-straight week.

The Blue Dragon men were ranked No. 4 in the nation in the latest NJCAA Division I basketball poll, which were released Monday.

Hutchinson earned wins over Victoria College Friday, 121-95, and on Saturday following a 112-89 victory over Wilbur Wright College to start 6-0 this season. The Blue Dragons have allowed under 100 points in the last three games and scored the second-most points in program history last Wednesday in the 139-84 win over Labette.

Also ranked from the Jayhawk Conference were Coffeyville at No. 8, jumping up from No. 12 and on a 6-0 start. Butler is also 6-0 and rose from No. 18 to No. 12 in this week's poll. Garden City, 4-0, is No. 22. Seward County, Barton and Cowley all received votes.

Northwest Florida State, Indian Hills and Salt Lake are the top 3 teams ahead of the Blue Dragons this week.

The Blue Dragons open conference play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Arena against Independence.

Following two wins at the Cougar Booster Club Classic over the weekend in Great Bend, the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team moved up to No. 4 in the latest NJCAA Division I national rankings, which were released Monday.

The Blue Dragons, ranked No. 6 last week, edged Division II No. 5 Labette 74-63 and Redlands 64-58 to improve to 6-0 this season. The Dragons were 3-0 over the final week of the non-conference season with a 90-51 win over the Washburn JV.

Trinity Valley took 10 first-place votes and is No. 1 once again at 4-0. Also 4-0 is Northwest Florida State, which is ranked No. 2. Blinn College in third in the poll with Chipola at No. 5, both also 4-0.

From the Jayhawk Conference, Barton is No. 16 after a 6-0 start and two-win weekend in its own classic. Dodge City is 4-1 and is now No. 25 after receiving votes in the last week's rankings.

The Blue Dragons are set to begin conference play 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Arena against Independence.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons climb to No. 4 in NJCAA Rankings

After one of the wildest weekends of the 2022 NJCAA football season, there was a major shakeup in the Division I national rankings, released on Monday.

The only thing that stayed the same was that the Hutchinson Community College football team remained No. 1 after Saturday's come-from-behind 29-28 win at No. 4 Iowa Western in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The former Nos. 2, 3 and 4 teams in the rankings all lost on Saturday, creating a major shift.

The new Top 5 has Hutchinson (10-0) at No. 1, Northwest Mississippi (10-1) at No. 2, Iowa Western (8-2) at No. 3, Coffeyville (8-2) at No. 4 and Snow College (7-2) at No. 5.

There are two games still to be played in the NJCAA before the final poll is released next Monday. No. 11 Kilgore and No. 6 New Mexico Military plays in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference championship game and No. 5 Snow College travels to No. 7 Lackawanna College.

The top four teams from next Monday's final poll will play in the NJCAA National semifinals either December 3 or 4 at the sites of the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the final poll.

Hutchinson is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the NJCAA and received all 11 first-place votes.

The shake-up started with Northwest Mississippi falling to East Mississippi 36-28 in the MCCAC Playoff championship. Then No. 3 Trinity Valley fell 38-10 to Kilgore in the SJCFC semifinals. Then, there was the No. 1 Blue Dragons' win over the No. 4-ranked Reivers.

Jimmie J. Goering, 85, died November 10, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born April 18, 1937, in Pretty Prairie, to Ernest and Bertha (Unruh) Goering.

Jimmie graduated from Pretty Prairie High School in 1955, and then attended Hutchinson Community College. He was a supervisor for Cessna / Eaton for 39 years. Jimmie loved to go bowling and skeet shooting and he was a member of First Mennonite Church, Hutchinson.

On July 29, 1967, he married Florene Faye Flickner, in Pretty Prairie. She passed away on September 29, 2013.

Jimmie is survived by: nephews, Terry Goering (Renee), Hutchinson, Steve Goering (Debbie), Mullinville; nieces, Elizabeth Byers, Kingman, Vickie Goering-Bainum(Rex), Hutchinson; cousin, Lois Schlickau, Haven; and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Florene; and siblings.

Funeral service will be 1pm Friday, November 18, 2022, at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will follow in Lonestar Cemetery, Pretty Prairie. Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Thursday, with family present from 5 to 7 pm at Elliott Mortuary.

🏀 WBB: Dragons edge Cougars

Stephen Michael Ashcraft, 76, was freed from the grasp of dementia and was restored by his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at his home. He was born at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson, KS, on May 3, 1946, to Vernon William and Virginia Blanche Carmichael Ashcraft.

Steve attended Mitchell Grade School and was a proud graduate of Valley Pride Grade School and Nickerson Rural High School (1964). At Nickerson he lettered in basketball as well as playing American Legion summer baseball. In 1966 Steve graduated from Hutchinson Junior College and continued his education at The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy, graduating in 1969. At KU Steve was a member of Kappa Psi pharmacy fraternity. He began his pharmacy internship at Coberly Drug. Steve was the first pharmacy manager for Dillon’s Pharmacy on West 5th. He later worked for Key Rexall. In 1980 Steve opened Ashcraft Pharmacy in the Hart’s Shopping Center in South Hutchinson. In 2016 he retired after selling the pharmacy. During Steve’s long career he made hundreds of friends and loyal customers who not only admired his professional expertise, but enjoyed his compassion and ornery spirit.

Steve married Jacqulyn Sue Andrews on August 31, 1968, at Union Valley Church in Hutchinson. Together they completed their senior years at KU in their cozy 10’ wide mobile home. On June 4, 1971, their marriage was blessed with their only son, Stephen William (aka Peanut). He and his wife, Ali Chandler Clark Ashcraft, brought daughters, Chandler Elizabeth, Lexee Adisson, and Bryten Makenzie to the family. Steve is also survived by his younger brother, Larry (Jolene) of Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Rhonda Cairns Ashcraft; nieces, Shawna Ashcraft Logue, Desiree Ashcraft Byard (Jimmie), and Jennifer Ashcraft Toland (Ben); four great nieces; and numerous cousins. Missing him greatly are his ace German Shorthair bird dog, Ría, loyal Irish Setter, Brady, and three-legged tortoise kitty, Mocha.

Sports were always an integral part of Steve’s life, starting with Cub Scout Baseball and on to competitive baseball and softball. As an adult he played slow pitch softball for Lee T. Moore Construction, Carl’s Bar, and finally Ashcraft Pharmacy. In 2014-15 Steve received his 40 year plaque for officiating basketball and football for the Kansas State High School Activity Association. He loved the challenge and camaraderie of “reffing” at the high school and college level and still maintained contact with his fellow refs during their Third Thursday coffees at Scuttlebutt’s. Another passion of Steve’s were his vintage vehicles. He was always proudest behind the wheel of his ‘66 Corvette or his ‘57 Chevy Bel Aire.

Steve was often the quiet supporter of school sports programs, having supplied uniforms for golf and tennis teams. One of his favorite pastimes had been finding hundreds of golf balls on the Crazy Horse course and in the pond on #11. Steve would then spruce them up and repurpose them for the area student golf programs. His last moments were in this Happy Place.

Steve and Jackie were charter members of the original Paganica Country Club. Steve was an active golfer as the course changed from Paganica to Lakewood, The Highlands, and now Crazy Horse.

Steve learned to love hunting and fishing at an early age alongside his father and brothers. He passed these interests along to his son and there were soon three generations sharing the love. Opening day of Pheasant Season became a family ritual.

As a die-hard Jayhawk, Steve attended football and basketball games whenever possible, even traveling to some distant sites to cheer them on. In 2021 his granddaughter, Chandler, became the third generation Jayhawk following her father in 1994. Granddaughter, Lexee, is currently a sophomore at KU.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert John.

He was baptized as a member of South Hutchinson United Methodist Church and currently attended Hutchinson First Church of the Nazarene.

No matter whether it was dance recitals (which were never quite his “thing”) or sporting events Steve loved watching his granddaughters. Steve and Jackie were later able to tour again with several other golf buddies and their wives. They witnessed Tiger Woods winning the British Open in 2000. The golf group’s annual trip to Las Vegas for several rounds was always something he and his son cherished.

Steve’s compassion and generosity were well known in the community. Schools and organizations could always depend on Ashcraft Pharmacy to support their fundraisers. His customers were “his people” and he always saw to it that their pharmaceutical needs were met. Steve will be greatly missed.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2022, at Hutchinson First Church of the Nazarene, 4290 N. Monroe, with Pastor Kent Pedersen officiating. Stephen Michael Ashcraft, 76, was freed from the grasp of dementia and was restored by his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at his home. He was born at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson, KS, on May 3, 1946, to Vernon William and Virginia Blanche Carmichael Ashcraft.Steve attended Mitchell Grade School and was a proud graduate of Valley Pride Grade School and Nickerson Rural High School (1964). At Nickerson he lettered in basketball as well as playing American Legion summer baseball. In 1966 Steve graduated from Hutchinson Junior College and continued his education at The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy, graduating in 1969. At KU Steve was a member of Kappa Psi pharmacy fraternity. He began his pharmacy internship at Coberly Drug. Steve was the first pharmacy manager for Dillon’s Pharmacy on West 5th. He later worked for Key Rexall. In 1980 Steve opened Ashcraft Pharmacy in the Hart’s Shopping Center in South Hutchinson. In 2016 he retired after selling the pharmacy. During Steve’s long career he made hundreds of friends and loyal customers who not only admired his professional expertise, but enjoyed his compassion and ornery spirit.Steve married Jacqulyn Sue Andrews on August 31, 1968, at Union Valley Church in Hutchinson. Together they completed their senior years at KU in their cozy 10’ wide mobile home. On June 4, 1971, their marriage was blessed with their only son, Stephen William (aka Peanut). He and his wife, Ali Chandler Clark Ashcraft, brought daughters, Chandler Elizabeth, Lexee Adisson, and Bryten Makenzie to the family. Steve is also survived by his younger brother, Larry (Jolene) of Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Rhonda Cairns Ashcraft; nieces, Shawna Ashcraft Logue, Desiree Ashcraft Byard (Jimmie), and Jennifer Ashcraft Toland (Ben); four great nieces; and numerous cousins. Missing him greatly are his ace German Shorthair bird dog, Ría, loyal Irish Setter, Brady, and three-legged tortoise kitty, Mocha.Sports were always an integral part of Steve’s life, starting with Cub Scout Baseball and on to competitive baseball and softball. As an adult he played slow pitch softball for Lee T. Moore Construction, Carl’s Bar, and finally Ashcraft Pharmacy. In 2014-15 Steve received his 40 year plaque for officiating basketball and football for the Kansas State High School Activity Association. He loved the challenge and camaraderie of “reffing” at the high school and college level and still maintained contact with his fellow refs during their Third Thursday coffees at Scuttlebutt’s. Another passion of Steve’s were his vintage vehicles. He was always proudest behind the wheel of his ‘66 Corvette or his ‘57 Chevy Bel Aire.Steve was often the quiet supporter of school sports programs, having supplied uniforms for golf and tennis teams. One of his favorite pastimes had been finding hundreds of golf balls on the Crazy Horse course and in the pond on #11. Steve would then spruce them up and repurpose them for the area student golf programs. His last moments were in this Happy Place.Steve and Jackie were charter members of the original Paganica Country Club. Steve was an active golfer as the course changed from Paganica to Lakewood, The Highlands, and now Crazy Horse.Steve learned to love hunting and fishing at an early age alongside his father and brothers. He passed these interests along to his son and there were soon three generations sharing the love. Opening day of Pheasant Season became a family ritual.As a die-hard Jayhawk, Steve attended football and basketball games whenever possible, even traveling to some distant sites to cheer them on. In 2021 his granddaughter, Chandler, became the third generation Jayhawk following her father in 1994. Granddaughter, Lexee, is currently a sophomore at KU.Steve was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert John.He was baptized as a member of South Hutchinson United Methodist Church and currently attended Hutchinson First Church of the Nazarene.No matter whether it was dance recitals (which were never quite his “thing”) or sporting events Steve loved watching his granddaughters. All the way back at the preseason Blue Dragon time trial in August, Hutchinson Community College cross country head coach Justin Riggs received an early sign just how good his women's team might be in 2022.

Third-year sophomore and the team's top runner over her first two seasons,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/cocking_louise_gbqv">Louise Cocking</a>, posted a PR on that August day of the time trial. Cocking finished fourth.

"It really showed how well we could do as a team," said the All-America Cocking. "These girls have come up by leaps and bounds. We work so well together in practice. We have that balance that we all want it really badly, but we are all supportive of each other."

The Blue Dragons started the season ranked No. 2 in the preseason USTFCCCA rankings. After a one-point loss to Cloud County at the Ollie Isom Invitational, the Dragons slipped to No. 3. That's the ranking they will take into Saturday's NJCAA Division I Championship in Tallahassee Florida. The Women's Division I race is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. at Apalachee Regional Park.

"This has been a fun year," Riggs said. "We went to a lot of challenging meets. We didn't win a meet until Region VI, but we challenged ourselves and ran against a lot of NCAA Division I and Division II teams and some good NAIA schools, knowing that it would benefit you when it came to the postseason."

Outside of Cocking, the top five runners in each meet have been primarily freshmen.

Just 13 days later, Larson broke the school record with a time of 18:12.1 at the Chili Pepper Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

"It's been a great year. I didn't expect the team to be so far up, but we've stayed up there," Larson said. "It's been an eye-opening season. In high school, I was exposed to some high-level runners and it had me prepared to run at the next level. But this season has really shown me what I am capable of."

Haven freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/hoskinson_taylor_jjhw">Taylor Hoskinson</a>&nbsp;has another freshman who has seen steady improvement in each race this year. Hoskinson finished fourth at Pratt and then turned in a key sixth-place performance in the Region VI championship.

"We knew last year's recruiting class was going to be a pretty good class," Riggs said. "I had high expectations. A lot of them have competed at a pretty high level in high school and they've carried that over to here. There's a lot of talent and they've performed as expected."

Then came a one-point loss to Cloud County at the Ollie Isom Classic in El Dorado. Two weeks later, the Blue Dragons won their first-ever Division I Region VI championship, narrowly defeating Cloud County by eight points.

"We really wanted the region bad because we didn't run our best at Butler," Hoskinson said. "We knew we were going to come back."

At the regional, Larson was third, Cocking was fourth and Hoskinson was sixth. Lambert placed 13 and sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/baetz_courtney_njzm">Courtney Baetz</a>&nbsp;was the key fifth-place runner to placed 30th.

The Blue Dragons' best finish in a Division I championship was seventh two years ago. The best overall national finish was winning the 2001 Division I national championship.

Blue Dragon Cross Country Team rides dream season into Nationals

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa-The final game of the 2022 regular season features the Jayhawk Conference champion against the Iowa Conference champion on Saturday.

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College Football team travels to the No. 4 Iowa Western Reivers at 1 p.m. at Titan Stadium in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The ramifications of Saturday's matchup are simple. The Blue Dragons are fighting for a Top-2 seed for the NJCAA National Playoffs and to host a national semifinal game. The Reivers are battling for their playoff lives after falling to Coffeyville last week.

The Blue Dragons are riding a 15-game winning streak into Saturday's matchup after a 53-0 victory over Independence last week at Gowans Stadium. The Blue Dragon defense set the tone on the first drive with a sack/fumble by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/green_jr._rodney_3xc7">Rodney Green Jr.</a>&nbsp;which was returned for a 25-yard touchdown by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/drummer_ja-mez_cv52">Ja'Mez Drummer</a>. The Blue Dragons allowed just 63 total yards and four first downs to the Pirates last week.

After taking an early 7-0 lead over Coffeyville last Saturday in Coffeyville, Iowa Western was stung by a blocked field goal and 62-yard return for a touchdown and the Red Ravens rode the wave of that momentum for a 23-7 victory over the then-No. 2 Reivers. Iowa Western more than doubled Coffeyville in total yardage (325-158) and had 21 first downs to the Red Ravens' five. The Reivers committed four turnovers against Coffeyville.

Saturday's game features two of the top defenses in the NJCAA.

Ty Frierson stayed hot in his starting role with 19 points. The freshman has been in the starting lineup since the second game of the season.

Frierson managed just three points in his first start, but has since averaged 19.3 points per game.

Aaron Franklin also added 19 points to go with seven rebounds.&nbsp;

Seven Dragons (Frierson, Franklin, Potter, Leyba, Bundy, Green and Garrison) scored in double figures.&nbsp;

"We were good in spots," coach Tommy DeSalme said after the game. The second-year coach said his team "just made enough plays" but has to "pay closer attention to detail."

Donald W. “Donnie” Scheuermann, died November 6, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Donald was born on August 24, 1953, in Hutchinson, to Jacob and Barbara (Chase) Scheuermann.

Donald graduated from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College. He was a die-hard basketball fan of Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons and KU Jayhawks. He retired from Woodwork Manufacturing and was a church elder at Grace Christian Church.

Donald is survived by: his brother, Thomas Scheuermann, Hutchinson; sister, Kathy Zimmerman, California; nephews, Jacob Espinoza, Jadon Espinoza and Justin Zimmerman.

He is preceded in death by: his parents, and sister, Sherry Jo Scheuermann.

John Branson “JB” Tarr died in the arms of his loving wife of 72 years on November 9, 2022, on his 91st&nbsp;birthday, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born November 9, 1931, in Cherokee, OK, to Jesse Cornelius and Lois Fay (Van Wye) Tarr.

JB graduated in 1949 from Planeview High School, Wichita. He went on to earn degrees at Wichita State and Pittsburg State Universities. He was a lifetime educator, teaching mathematics at Junior High, High school and college levels for 60 years. He officially retired from teaching in 1994 from Hutchinson Community College, but missed teaching mathematics, and became an adjunct instructor at NWAC in Arkansas for an additional 19 years.

Many athletes were impacted by Coach Tarr, in football, basketball, and track. He started with assisting in sports at Mulvane High, then coaching a sport for every season in Derby where he was head coach for track. He coached cross country and track at Hutchinson Community College for over 20 years, with a particular passion for long-distance runners.

John had a love of numbers, and acted as a statistician for many sports events, to include the National Junior College Basketball tournament and taking surveys at the State Fair. He passed his love of numbers on to the little ones in the family and a frequent sight was to find him working on math problems with them as soon as they could count. He tutored several grandkids from afar, as far away as Australia.

Beyond numbers, he had a love for golf, for birdwatching, for traveling, and for hiking, especially in the mountains. If a family member had an interest, he learned all about it so he could add it to his hobbies.

JB was a member of the Church of Christ, serving as an elder for 3 congregations- College Hill Church of Christ in Mulvane, Walnut and Campbell in Hutchinson, and Bella Vista Church of Christ in Arkansas. He epitomized a life of servitude. JB taught classes at these churches and was willing to also lead the song service and preach as needed. Of note, he and Patsy worked several years as facilitators for Marriage Encounter and counseling young couples. They traveled to South Africa to teach Bible Classes there.

&nbsp;JB is survived by: his wife, Patsy of Hutchinson; daughters, Deborah Herndon (Rex) of Arkansas City, Brenda Graham (Kenny) of Hutchinson, and Penny Pearlman of Coral Springs, FL; son, John Tarr (Kelley) of Brooklet, GA, 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He is survived by one brother, Van Tarr of Mulvane.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dickie Van Tarr; a granddaughter, Holly Jo Hadley; a great-granddaughter, Ava Marie Ehret, and 5 sisters.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 14, 2022, at Elliott Chapel, with son-in-law, Kenny Graham and Randall Caselman officiating. Graveside service will be 3:00 p.m. at the Mulvane Cemetery, Mulvane, with Robert Hamm officiating. A 6-foot-5 redshirt freshman from Kansas City, Franklin had opening-week point total of 28 points against Fort Scott, 34 points against No. 7 Triton and 20 against NEO.

Franklin is the first Blue Dragon to earn national weekly honors since Matt Mayers in 2021.

Franklin averaged 26.7 points per game and shot 53.7 percent overall and was 10 of 35 (40.0) percent from 3-point range last week.

In the Blue Dragons 113-105 win over No. 7 Triton, Franklin poured in a career-high 34 points on 16 of 23 shooting. Against NEO, Franklin had his first career double-double with 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

Rosalyn ‘Rose’ Mae Diasio was born Monday, October 7, 1935, in Buhler, to Albert Warkentin and Thelma (Froese) Warkentin.&nbsp; She passed away into the arms of her Father in heaven on Saturday, November 5, 2022.

Rose grew up on a farm outside of Buhler, KS, with her Mom and Dad, Albert and Thelma Warkentin, and her older brother, Gene, and younger sister, Betty Joyce.&nbsp; It was a hard life, but a good life.&nbsp; After graduating from Buhler High School, she met and married her first husband, Dick Mills, and together her first son, James Richard, was born.&nbsp; When that marriage dissolved, Rose married her second husband, Robert Diasio, to whom two sons were born, Robert Jr., and David.&nbsp; After that marriage came to an end, she packed up her three boys and moved back to Kansas from Texas.&nbsp; These setbacks did not deter Rose from following her drams.&nbsp; She went to Salt City Business College, worked part-time at the airport, all while raising her three boys.&nbsp; After graduation, Rose landed a job at what is now known as J&amp;J Drainage Products Company, Hutchinson, where she worked 33 years until retiring at the age of 65 in 2000.&nbsp; She was an avid reader of romance novels, but her favorite book was The Bible.&nbsp; Rose also loved watching Nascar and Kansas City Chiefs football games.&nbsp; Most of all, she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Whenever they would visit, her world would light up.&nbsp; Rose, Mom, and Grammy will be missed greatly, but we will carry on her love, light, and legacy!

She is survived by: her three sons, Jim Mills and Bob Diasio of Hutchinson, and David (Marcia) Diasio of Sterling; grandchildren, Teea (Tony) Wilson, Cody Mills, Ryan Diasio, Colton Mills, and Danielle (Ryan) Mitchell; great-grandchildren (who were the lights of her life), Chauntea Grissom, Lillyona and Cillian Mills, Jaiden and Easton Diasio, Taliyah Wilson, and Rhett and Maddox Mitchell; sister, Betty Joyce (Larry) Krehbiel; sister-in-law, Betty Warkentin; numerous nieces and nephews; and special family friends, Annette Morgan, Kelly Hartley, Sarah Smith, and Brian Fitzgerald.

Jerome “Jerry” Leonard Land was born on October 2, 1933, at the home of his grandmother in Juniata, NE to Charles L. and Josephine L. (Fifield) Land. After graduating high school in Omaha in 1952, he joined the army and served during the Korean war, stationed in Germany. He attended college and graduated with a degree in draftsmanship after which he went to work for the Metropolitan Water District in Los Angeles.

In 1958, he married Jacqueline Strahan in San Bernardino, CA, adopting her son, Steve. The couple had two more children, Linda and Todd.

He married Ruth Potter Black Milliken on April 13, 1991, at Clark, NV. They lived at several locations in California where Jerry owned a pest control business, The Fly Guy. He was always a diligent and conscientious worker and a savvy business owner.

After retirement, he and Ruth moved to Moundridge, and later to McPherson, to be near family. Jerry was an expert woodworker and made many beautiful pieces of furniture for his and Ruth’s home as well as making gifts for family members. He and Ruth always had a beautiful home, and they enjoyed sharing it with family, especially on the 4th&nbsp;of July holiday when there was usually a cookout and fireworks. Jerry enjoyed being around the extended family and celebrating many holidays with 3-4 generations. Jerry and Ruth attended McPherson Free Methodist Church and more recently, Cornerstone Bible Church.

Jerome Leonard Land passed into eternity on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, after several years of declining health. He was eighty-nine.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Land of Hutchinson; sister, Dolores Phelps of Florida; daughter, Linda Hess (Robert) of Twin Falls, ID; and sons, Steve Land and Todd Land (Jerry Reinke) of Joplin, MO; grandchildren, Serena Riley, Skylar Land, and Ryan Land; brother-in-law, Larry Potter of Inman; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; stepson, Wesley M. Black; brother-in-law, Richard Potter; sister-in-law, Judith Potter; and great nephew, Christopher Shepard.

A memorial service will take place at Stockham Family Funeral Home in McPherson at 11:00 AM, on Friday, November 18, 2022, with Rev. Tom Mayse officiating.&nbsp; Burial with Military Honors will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

Jerry was an expert woodworker and made many beautiful pieces of furniture for his and Ruth’s home as well as making gifts for family members. He and Ruth always had a beautiful home, and they enjoyed sharing it with family, especially on the 4th&nbsp;of July holiday when there was usually a cookout and fireworks. Jerry enjoyed being around the extended family and celebrating many holidays with 3-4 generations. Jerry and Ruth attended McPherson Free Methodist Church and more recently, Cornerstone Bible Church.Jerome Leonard Land passed into eternity on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, after several years of declining health. He was eighty-nine.He is survived by his wife, Ruth Land of Hutchinson; sister, Dolores Phelps of Florida; daughter, Linda Hess (Robert) of Twin Falls, ID; and sons, Steve Land and Todd Land (Jerry Reinke) of Joplin, MO; grandchildren, Serena Riley, Skylar Land, and Ryan Land; brother-in-law, Larry Potter of Inman; several nieces and nephews and many friends.He was predeceased by his parents; stepson, Wesley M. Black; brother-in-law, Richard Potter; sister-in-law, Judith Potter; and great nephew, Christopher Shepard.A memorial service will take place at Stockham Family Funeral Home in McPherson at 11:00 AM, on Friday, November 18, 2022, with Rev. Tom Mayse officiating.&nbsp; Burial with Military Honors will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

Shari Rae (Goering) Henson was born in the McPherson Hospital on April 20, 1973, to Bryce and Irene (Shannon) Goering.&nbsp; She was the third of three children.&nbsp; She lived most of her life in McPherson except for four years in Leadville, Colorado, from the fall of 1975 to the fall of 1979.&nbsp; Shari was baptized in the First United Presbyterian Church of Leadville on June 5, 1977.&nbsp; The family returned to McPherson in 1979, and Shari attended school in the McPherson School district through her senior year, graduating from McPherson High School in 1991.&nbsp; She attended Hutchinson Junior College where she studied Office Technology.&nbsp; On March 8, 2003, she was united in marriage to Richard (Rich) Henson, and they were blessed with a daughter, Hailey Rae, who was the light of their lives.&nbsp; Over the years, Shari worked at CertainTeed Mfg., Court Trustee’s Office, McPherson Middle School, Heartland Vet Clinic, and Lincoln Elementary School.&nbsp;

Shari was a member of the First Christian Church in McPherson.

Family was very important to Shari, and she always enjoyed family get-togethers and sharing the holidays with family.&nbsp; She also loved attending all of Hailey’s sporting events, especially her softball games, and enjoyed going to programs and sporting events of her nieces and nephews.&nbsp; She was especially close to her brother and sister, and their children became like her own.&nbsp; Somewhere along the way, Shari developed a green thumb and became the “plant doctor” for friends and family.&nbsp; She especially liked succulents, and the Henson home was always filled with a variety of plants.&nbsp; Shari was also well known by family and friends for giving the best hugs.

After a long and hard-fought battle with kidney cancer, Shari Rae Henson, 49, of McPherson, KS, passed away at 8:45 PM on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at her home in McPherson surrounded by family and friends.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her father, Bryce Goering; her paternal grandparents, Ed and Teresa Goering, and maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Wilma Shannon, all of McPherson; one uncle, Gene Shannon of Cassoday, KS; and two aunts, Betty Norris-Madron of McPherson and Bonnie Goering of Kansas City, KS.

Survivors include her loving husband, Rich, and daughter, Hailey; her mother, Irene (Shannon) Goering; her brother, Shawn Goering and his wife, Kim; her sister, Shannon Renee Saverino-Owens and her husband, Brad; her brothers-in-law, Keith Myers, Jr. and Dean LeGron and his wife, Jara, all of McPherson; and a sister-in-law, Roberta Ann Arell of Wichita.&nbsp; There was a special place in her heart for her nieces and nephews.&nbsp; She is also survived by several cousins and a special uncle, Buck Nelson.&nbsp; Shari was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.&nbsp; She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

The family would like to thank all those who sent food, participated in fundraisers, and in general, showed their love and care in so many ways.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, November 19, 2022, at the First Christian Church with Pastor Abby Walker officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family asks that all attendees wear bright colors.&nbsp;&nbsp;A private scattering of the ashes will be held at a later date.

Steven John Davies, 75, of Hiawatha, with family by his side, passed away October 29, 2022, at Amberwell hospital in Hiawatha, after a prolonged illness.

He answered to many names: Dr. D, Dr. Davies, Steve, or Steven John, called himself Fat Steve, and Slim Davies. His most desired and cherished title was “daddy.” For those who were blessed to know him, mere words are insufficient to describe this unique personality. His storied life began in Kingman, January 28, 1947, delivered at home by his father. His parents owned and operated Livingston Mortuary, which at the time also operated the ambulance service and the furniture store. He was born with a heart condition, fortunately to educated parents, his father with medical related training and his nurse mother, who saved his life. Despite this condition, he was a strong and active child who dreamed of being a cowboy. It was during his senior year he suﬀered a heart attack and was told his life expectancy would be short. He was advised to not pursue college as the strain would be too much. Steve remained determined to do whatever he set his mind to do, and he certainly did not slow down!

To say that he was highly educated is a vast understatement. After graduating high school, he began his higher education career with a BA in speech pathology, simultaneously obtaining a BA in elementary education from Wichita State University. He continued with an MA in Speech Pathology, a certification in Special Education Administration at ESU, an MS in Special Education from KSU, Education Specialist degree in Administration, Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from WSU, and topped it off with a PhD in Adult and Continuing Education from KSU. He belonged to the Phi Delta Theta fraternity throughout his college years and was active in student government. He highly valued educational achievement, but had a down to earth style that many found surprising,

Steve’s professional working career began in Hiawatha, KS as a speech/language pathologist and audiologist and over the years included multiple positions in the fields of speech, education, and criminal justice. Most notably, his career intertwined his education and criminal justice backgrounds including, the Superintendent of Education at Kansas State Industrial Reformatory in Hutchinson, KS, USD #105 Rawlins Co-Atwood, USD #331 Kingman-Norwich, Secretary of Corrections for the State of Kansas, Chairman of the Kansas Parole Board, and he returned to Brown County as Director of Special Education Interlocal #615, followed by Superintendent of Schools for USD#430 South Brown County from which he retired in 2017 after 16 yrs of service to the community.

&nbsp;He was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, and friend. At the age of 46yrs he married Tracy, who he met while teaching as adjunct professor at Pratt Community College. They wed in his hometown of Kingman, KS on April 1st, 1993, April Fools Day, his favorite day of the year. On this day, he also instantly achieved his lifelong desire to become a father, upon the consent of Raven (age 3yrs) and again in 1994 with the birth of their son Drew.

Steve always considered northeast Kansas his home and friends here his family. Regardless of his role, Dr. Davies devoted his life to kids to help them develop a positive self-image, he always had their best interests at heart.

Steve championed various organizations too numerous to list such as: Lion’s Club, Jaycees, Boy Scouts of America, KARC, NASA, etc. that supported the development of young people, the disabled, and the disenfranchised. In a 1985, publication of the College of Education at KSU Perspectives in Adult Learning and Development Vol 9, Steve wrote an article entitled&nbsp;A Chance to Square Up&nbsp;where he detailed the value of a quality stair stepped educational program to support the needs of the inmates 85% of whom had not completed high school or a GED as he would later be quoted that 90% of incarcerated people return to the community and that the purpose of corrections is to return them as good neighbors. He served as Scoutmaster of Troop #112, and coached little league soccer and baseball. He devoted his time to mentoring youth, and networking to help people young and old achieve their goals. He had a passion for horses, vintage cars, and collecting antiques.

Although he had a giant personality to match his size and would go “toe to toe” with anyone who wanted to challenge him, he was a sentimental, tender hearted, humble man with a phenomenal sense of humor. You always knew where you stood with Steve. He was a true humanist and treated everyone with respect, and in turn was widely respected.

Ironically, he was told his life would be limited due to his weak heart, along with several other infirmities that came his way, however, he chose to live a vibrant life that he was so willing to share with others. Ultimately, it was his heart that proved to be the strongest, outlasting everything until the very end.

Steve is survived by his wife Tracy Davies of Hiawatha, his daughter Raven Sharice Milam Davies of Topeka, his son Drew Christian Davies, of Kansas City, MO, and his sister Karen Jo Vickery, of Cincinnati, OH.
