HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The HutchCC Board of Trustees will update the school's policy for nursing mothers as part of its agenda Thursday.

The policy was last amended in 2016 and was enacted as part of the Affordable Care Act.

The policy includes reasonable time to express milk at work. According to the policy, employees should use usual break and meal periods for expressing milk, when possible. If additional time is needed beyond the provided breaks, employees may use personal leave or may make up the time as negotiated with their supervisors.

Employees and students will also be provided with a private place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from co-workers and the public, to express breast milk. 

No employee shall be discriminated against for breastfeeding or expressing milk during the work period, and reasonable efforts will be made to assist employees in meeting their infant feeding goals while at work.

Any act found to be intentional that invades a nursing mother’s privacy shall be treated as a disciplinary offense and reported to the appropriate supervisor.

Hutchinson Community College will Maintain the cleanliness of the room or location set aside for the use of employees and students expressing breast milk while on campus.

Notify employees returning to work following the birth of a child of their rights under the national worksite lactation accommodation law in the U.S. Patient Affordable Care Act. This notice may either be provided individually to affected employees or to all employees through college communications.

Breastfeeding persons utilizing lactation support services will give supervisors advance notice of the need for lactation accommodations, preferably prior to their return to work or school following the birth of the child. This will allow supervisors the opportunity to establish a location and work out scheduling issues.

Maintain the designated area by wiping all used surfaces with microbial wipes so the area is clean for the next user.

Students may inquire at the Information Counter, main floor of the Parker Student Union, about locations and contact persons.

HutchCC BOT to update lactation policy at Thursday meeting

Tracy Floyd Sivils, 55, died Friday, February 3, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; He was born April 17, 1967, in Hutchinson, to Kenneth “Kenny” and Ernestine Janette (Eisiminger) Sivils.

Tracy graduated from Nickerson High School in 1985.&nbsp; He received his EMS training from Hutchinson Community College, and graduated from the police academy in both Kansas and Nebraska. Tracy worked as a police officer in Kingman, KS and McCook, NE, before retiring from the Salina Police Department.&nbsp; After retirement, he drove a truck for Brull Trucking, Hutchinson, and helped on the family farm at Partridge.&nbsp; Tracy enjoyed the simple things in life such as woodworking, hunting, fishing, playing cards, and watching the Kansas City Chiefs.&nbsp; He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hutchinson.

On March 12, 1994, he married Karen Stohs, in Bremen, Kansas.&nbsp; They were blessed with two sons, Connor and Brock.&nbsp; Tracy was proud of his sons, always striving to be there to support them in their activities.&nbsp;

Tracy is survived by:&nbsp; his wife of almost 29 years, Karen Sivils; sons, Connor Sivils and Brock Sivils, all of Inman; father, Kenny Sivils; sister, Tawnya Harner (Doug), all of Partridge; mother-in-law, LeIla Stohs of Bremen, KS; sister-in-law, Diane Lasseigne (Mark) of Edwardsville, IL; brother-in-law, Wayne Stohs (Jody) of Noblesville, IN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ernestine Sivils and father-in-law, Victor Stohs.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 10, 2023, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 407 E. 12th, Hutchinson, with Pastors Quentin Nuttmann and Henry Blickhahn officiating.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will take place in Partridge Cemetery.&nbsp; Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.&nbsp; Monday through Wednesday, and from 9:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp; Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Tracy F. Sivils Memorial Fund or Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS&nbsp; 67501.

The Blue Dragons rallied from four runs down in the first game to complete an 11-5 victory in Game 1 at Bulldog Park. The Blue Dragons exploded for an 11-run fourth inning and rolled to a five-inning 17-0 win to complete the sweep.

The Blue Dragons improved to 4-0. Hutchinson plays four games in the Winter Blast on Friday and Saturday in Denison, Texas.

Stipsits went on a combined 6 for 7 with three doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs as Hutchinson combined for 28 runs on 24 hits in the doubleheader.

Sandoval had four combined hits and seven RBIs on Sunday, including her second five-RBI game of the season in Game 2.

 ⚾ WSB: Stipsits leads Blue Dragons in sweep of Bulldogs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The two new members of the Hutchinson City Council will be sworn into their positions at Tuesday morning's meeting.

Stacy Goss and Stuart Conklin will take their oaths of office.

Also on the agenda is a motion to approve a Resolution supporting the submission of a MIH/ARPA Moderate Income Housing Grant Application and submittal for the Housing Investor Tax Credit Program from Kansas Housing Resources Corporation for Plum Creek Subdivision. 

According to developer Jim Strawn's submission to the Housing Commission, this development will be located just to the east of Plum Creek Elementary School on 43rd St.

This will be the first sub-division in Hutchinson to implement the Rural Housing Incentive District (RHID) for single family homes. The improvements such as design, water, sewer, storm water, curb and gutter, streets, electric, gas and sidewalks would be funded by bonds through the City of Hutchinson and paid for through the property tax (paid annually) until the bonds are paid off. Once the bonds are paid in full, the city, county, schools and college all will get their normal percentage.

By funding it in this manner, there would be no special assessments on the homes.

The City Council will also consider an ordinance modifying the City Council districts based on the 2020 census. Voting precincts are established by State law and may not be divided to accommodate the equalization of the population within the City Council districts.

Precinct 13 was divided into two separate precincts with Precinct 13-H102 moving from the Northwest District to the Southwest District. Precinct 21 was moved from the Northeast District to the Southeast District. The movement of these two precincts reduced the difference between the largest and the smallest population in the districts to 440.

The City Council will also officially approve the renewal of the quarter-cent sales tax that the public supported again last November.

Also up for approval is the 2023 Residential Street Maintenance Project. 

The project includes Engineering’s crack and chip sealing of residential streets and cape sealing of the downtown streets. It also includes crack and sand sealing the Jim Martinez Trail.

The recommended bid on the project is for&nbsp;$2,256,639.75 from Circle C Paving and Construction, LLC.

The Hutchinson City Council meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. at City Hall.

According to developer Jim Strawn's submission to the Housing Commission, this development will be located just to the east of Plum Creek Elementary School on 43rd St.This will be the first sub-division in Hutchinson to implement the Rural Housing Incentive District (RHID) for single family homes. The improvements such as design, water, sewer, storm water, curb and gutter, streets, electric, gas and sidewalks would be funded by bonds through the City of Hutchinson and paid for through the property tax (paid annually) until the bonds are paid off. Once the bonds are paid in full, the city, county, schools and college all will get their normal percentage.By funding it in this manner, there would be no special assessments on the homes.The City Council will also consider an ordinance modifying the City Council districts based on the 2020 census. Voting precincts are established by State law and may not be divided to accommodate the equalization of the population within the City Council districts.Precinct 13 was divided into two separate precincts with Precinct 13-H102 moving from the Northwest District to the Southwest District. Precinct 21 was moved from the Northeast District to the Southeast District. The movement of these two precincts reduced the difference between the largest and the smallest population in the districts to 440.The City Council will also officially approve the renewal of the quarter-cent sales tax that the public supported again last November.Also up for approval is the 2023 Residential Street Maintenance Project. City Council to swear in new members Tuesday

Jeanette Gammon Mull passed away at home on January 29, 2023. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She brought joy and happiness to others through her accomplishments as a painter, volunteer and civic servant, where she actively participated in the community, always with a focus on the common good.

Jeanette was born February 17, 1936 in Springfield, Missouri. She was the daughter of Dr. Claude Gammon and Lucille(Ross) Gammon, and was raised in Buffalo, Missouri, where she attended Buffalo High School and graduated as Salutatorian. Thereafter, Jeanette attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, earning a degree in Journalism which led to a job at AT&amp;T in Kansas City, Missouri, where she was the writer/editor/photographer for the employee newsletter.

While in Kansas City, she met her husband of 61 years, Jack Mull, and they married in 1961 at the Community Christian Church on the Country Club Plaza. During their time in Kansas City, Jeanette and Jack welcomed their first child, John, and then moved to Staten Island, New York where they resided for three years. After New York, they moved to Hutchinson, Kansas where they made a lifelong home raising John and their daughter, Lucy, whom they welcomed shortly after arriving in town.

Jeanette was an accomplished woman with an entrepreneurial spirit. Her accolades were many, including Co-Founder of the Dillon Lecture Series (1981), President of Mull Motors auto dealership (early 80s) and Public Relations Chairman of the Reno County Historical Society, to name a few. She also worked in retail at Terry Bloskey’s clothing store. She lived her life with purpose, and she continually educated and challenged herself through reading, taking business, history and art classes at the community college, including a class to learn the Russian language! She traveled extensively, and was a crossword puzzle and word game enthusiast.

Jeanette was musical. She sang in her church choir, was a member of the Sound of Ahs music ensemble and loved listening to the local classical music station. Her family has fond memories of her playing Christmas carols on the piano throughout the years. Jeanette was also an avid gardener. Her backyard garden was colorful and interesting with many unique flowers and plants, including her grandmother Ross’s ancient rose bush that she transplanted and nurtured from her beloved mother’s garden.

Jeanette was a tremendous artistic talent and her true passion was painting. This came later in life when her children were grown. She devoted herself to art classes and workshops, traveling domestically and in France and Italy to expand her artistic skills and experience. As a result, her artwork has been shown locally and regionally, and many of her beloved pieces are treasured by family, friends and various businesses.

Jeanette is survived by her husband, Dr. John “Jack” Mull, Hutchinson; son, John G. Mull (Beth), Prescott, AZ; daughter, Lucy Wietharn (Brian), Leawood, KS; grandchildren, Andrew and Jacob Mull, Marshall and Cate Wietharn; sister, Carol (Gammon) Elkins, Gladstone, MO; nieces, Ann Elkins, and Dr. Linda Elkins; nephew, Onyx Crimbil; great-nieces, Carolyn and Marian McNulty and various cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents.

A Celebration of Life will take place on April 1st, from 1 to 4 pm, at the Hutchinson Art Center, where a retrospective of her work will be on display. Friends may sign her guestbook from 9am to 5pm beginning Monday, February 6th, at Elliott Mortuary.

TOPEKA - Hutchinson Community College freshman distance runner Serenity Larson earned her first career national qualification on Friday on Day 1 of the Washburn Open at the Washburn University Indoor Athletic Facility.

The freshman from Dodge City finished sixth in the 5,000 meters with a national-qualifying time of 18 minutes, 53.82 seconds. That time is the second-fastest time in Blue Dragon indoor history.

The Blue Dragons had two national qualifiers on Friday to bring their season total up to six.

Hutchinson’s Distance Medley Relay team placed seventh on Friday with a time of 13:05.36. The relay team of Ellie Van Zelfden, Kaylee James, Gracie Lambert and Taylor Hoskinson posted the fourth-best time in Blue Dragon indoor history. James, Lambert and Hoskinson have also qualified for nationals in individual events this season.

Freshman Liberty Limon finished second in the high jump, clearing 5-1.25 (1.56m) in a jump-off for second play. Limon tied for the 11th-best high jump in Blue Dragon indoor history.

TOPEKA – Sophomore Caleb Manning was the top finisher on Friday for the Hutchinson Community College men’s track team at the Washburn Open.

Manning finished second in the triple jump with a top attempt of 48 feet, 2 inches (14.68m). That mark was a personal record for Manning, who qualified for the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Championships two weeks ago at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility at the Rust Buster Classic.

Manning’s mark on Friday improved that mark and was the fourth-best triple jump in the nation this season.

The Blue Dragon men had four other Top 10 performances on Day 1 of the two-day meet at the site of the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Championships.

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team takes on the rival and 23rd-ranked Grizzlies for the 197th time at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena for the Blue Dragons’ annual Pink-Out Night game.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (analyst) calling the action. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will provide the stream for the game starting at 7:15 p.m.

The series started on January 4, 1929 in El Dorado. The Blue Dragons lead the all-time series 128-68, but along the way there have been countless matchups, including 17 Region VI Tournament meetings between Hutchinson and Butler.

The Blue Dragons enter the second meeting of the season with the Grizzlies coming off their best overall game of the season, a 91-65 victory over Cowley on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. 🏀 Dragon women take on Butler Saturday

Michael ‘Mike’ L. Souba, 72, passed away January 31, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; He was born November 8, 1950, in Fairmont, NE, to Donald Souba and Stella (Ruhl) Souba.

Mike was a 1968 graduate of Burrton High School, Burrton, KS.&nbsp; He graduated from Hutchinson Community College, formerly Hutchinson Community Junior College, and attended Wichita State University.&nbsp; Mike served in the United States Army from April 1970 to November 1971.

Growing up in a small town helped build the foundation for Mike’s strong work ethic.&nbsp; He was always interested in everything.&nbsp; In high school, he was a class officer and participated in drama, chorus and most sports.&nbsp; Mike’s love for sports continued into adulthood.&nbsp; He played softball, volleyball and walleyball.&nbsp; Mike especially enjoyed playing on the same team as his son, Matthew.&nbsp; He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Chiefs and the University of Kansas basketball.

Mike’s education was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army.&nbsp; He was honored to be stationed at West Point as a photographer.&nbsp; Mike’s favorite assignments were traveling with generals and photographing dignitaries and entertainers.&nbsp; This experience was forever a source of pride.

He continued in photography for the rest of his life.&nbsp; Mike became a Certified Master Photographer while working at the Dillons Advertising Department and later owned his own business, Freelance Photography.&nbsp; His most recent employment was in the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Imaging Department as the PACS Administrator.&nbsp; Mike loved what he did and all the friends he made along the way.&nbsp; These memories made up many of his life stories.

Mike’s deepest loves were his wife, Adzianna, and his son, Matthew and family.&nbsp; He loved being a ‘Pops.’&nbsp; Mike was always the proud father and grandfather.&nbsp; As head of the family, he always made everyone feel loved, safe and secure.

Mike felt it was important to stay up-to-date with current events.&nbsp; “You can make better decisions if you know what is coming.”&nbsp; Mike, we love you and miss you…and will take your advice, “always look both ways!”

On November 21, 1979, Michael married Adzianna Pinney, in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; They shared over 43 years of marriage,

Michael is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Adzianna Souba of Hutchinson, KS; son, Matthew (Trudy) Souba of Wichita, KS; grandsons, Linkon Souba and Dominik Souba; sisters, Shirley (Rod Smith) Hoskinson of Greeley, CO, Karen (Myrl) Base of Halstead, KS, and Bette (David) Hoskinson of Hutchinson, KS; sister-in-law, Joletta (Rusty) Seibel of Hutchinson, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by:&nbsp; his parents; sister, Peggy Collins; and parents-in-law, Eli and Adzianna Pinney.

Michael ‘Mike’ L. A total of 34 Hutchinson Community College football players from the 2022 NJCAA national runner-up team have signed letters of intent to play at four-year institutions through the December and February signing periods.

The breakdown of levels of play of the 34 Blue Dragons players are: Power 5 schools – 13; Other FBS schools – 12; FCS schools – 4; NCAA Division II school – 5.

Through his first three seasons as the Blue Dragon head coach, Drew Dallas now has produced 104 players who have been placed at four-year programs, including 32 players to Power 5 programs.

The 2022 Blue Dragons won the Jayhawk Conference championship and an NJCAA National Playoff semifinal over Coffeyville before falling to Iowa Western in the national championship game. The Blue Dragons tied a single-season record for wins, going 11-1 this past season.

🏈34 HutchCC players will move on to 4-year schools

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Bryce Luty Jazz Festival Concert is Friday at Hutchinson Community College.

"Friday at 7 p.m. is the main concert," said&nbsp;Jazz Program Coordinator Greg Weis. "Bryce, back in the day, when he was running his jazz festival here, he had some really amazing musicians that he brought in. In fact, when I got here, this is my first full year on the job running the jazz program, I saw his old posters from those festivals and hung them up on my office wall. I'm bringing in this year a gentleman named Greg Gisbert."

Gisbert is an active and highly respected jazz educator and everyone has likely heard his work, though they might not know it was him.

"He's performed and recorded with Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the Woody Herman big band. He joined the Buddy Rich big band when he was 19 years old. Then maybe most notable for people who aren't jazz fans, when you watch an NFL game every week, you actually hear him playing trumpet on the NFL theme."

Gisbert will be joined by the Hutchinson Community College Concert Jazz Band and the first ever Bryce Luty Jazz Festival All-Star BIg Band.

"For adults, it's $10, seniors are $8, high school students and children are $5," Weis said. "If you're a HutchCC student or an employee, you get in free with your ID."

Bryce Luty Jazz Festival Concert is Friday

Kay A. Mallicoat Schmidt, 81, passed away on January 28, 2023, at The Arbors in Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born March 6, 1940, to Darrell “Tom” and Katherine Francis (Ryan) Mallicoat in Des Moines, IA.

Kay graduated from Des Moines North High School in 1958 and subsequently earned an associate’s degree from Grandview College.&nbsp; She became an X-ray technologist in Iowa City.&nbsp; After being a homemaker and stay-at-home mother for many years, Kay worked in the microbiology lab at PMS Foods. &nbsp;Later she was a gifted-education paraprofessional.&nbsp; Kay loved the outdoors, horseback riding, running, hiking, and traveling the world.&nbsp; She also loved music and poetry.

She was first married to Felix Tarm and later married Gene Schmidt September 27, 2002, in Santa Fe, NM.&nbsp;

Kay is survived by: husband, Gene of Hutchinson; children: Susan Tarm (Jeff Mandel) of Minneapolis, MN; Michael (Eve) Tarm of Chicago and Tallinn, Estonia; Viktor (Julie) Tarm of Wichita; and Bill (Charity) Schmidt of Kansas City; grandchildren: Mari-Ann, Michael, Nikolas, Anneliis, Indrek, Inger (Kaarel), Jonas, Brendan, Marley, and Kalev; and 2 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2023, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Chaplain Luanne Haddaway officiating. &nbsp;The service will be live streamed via the obituary on the Elliott Mortuary website.&nbsp; Friends may sign the book from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.&nbsp; The family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m.&nbsp; prior to the service.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre announced Penny Bettles as the new Development Administrator. Penny started Monday and will plan and coordinate all development activities, major fundraising activities, sponsorship programs, and related special projects. 

Bettles also will also seek out and write grant proposals along with assisting in social media content, community outreach and overseeing educational programming.

Bettles was the Executive Director for Salina Downtown, Inc. for over 10 years and still resides in Salina, but was&nbsp;born and raised in Hutch and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1999.

“We are very excited to welcome Penny into the Fox Family, which includes our board members, staff, volunteers, donors, patrons, and sponsors," said Fox Executive Director Josh Davies. "Penny’s passion for the Fox, her professional background, and impressive skillset will make her a great asset to our team as we work toward expanding the legacy of the Fox for generations to come.”

While in Salina Penny received an Associate Degree in Business Administration at Brown Mackie College in 2003. She has also gone through several leadership programs and completed courses through WSU.

“I am fortunate to be able to come back to Hutch and rediscover my hometown through a completely different perspective,” Bettles said. “I am so excited to see what the future brings for myself and the Fox Theatre.”

Bettles hired by Fox Theatre

HAYS, Kan. — Fort Hays State University's Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS) will host various events, including free information sessions and webinars across the state for any interested students and their families this spring. 

In addition to the traditional sessions, KAMS will also host Counselor Luncheons for interested school counselors and teachers to provide important updates about the program. One of those luncheons is scheduled for Hutchinson on Feb. 16.

During the counselor luncheon, KAMS staff will provide important updates about the recently added flexibility in the KAMS curriculum. Counselors can join for a free lunch, receive KAMS swag, and a chance to win a $250 scholarship for a prospective KAMS student from their school.

KAMS offers high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to live and learn at Fort Hays State University. Students earn 68 college credits for free, join a community of exceptional students and get a two-year head start on college.

KAMS to host session for counselors in Hutch next month

Dennis Lynn Epperson, 75, passed away on January 27, 2023. He was born on August 2, 1947, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Donald and JoAnn (Thompson) Epperson.&nbsp;

Dennis graduated from Partridge High School and attended Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; A Navy Veteran, Dennis served in the Vietnam War.&nbsp; Dennis was employed with Far-Mar-Co, Tyson Foods and retired from Willowbrook Golf Course. He also enjoyed farming with his dad and on his own for a number of years.&nbsp; His grandchildren were his pride and joy and he loved to spend time with them, watch them in sports and joke around with them.&nbsp; As an avid hunter &amp; fisherman, he loved going out with his family, cousins, nephews and friends, whenever the opportunity arose. He especially loved the family Thanksgiving hunts he helped organize annually. His hobbies also included riding horses.&nbsp; He was a member of the Pretty Prairie Saddle Club. He was a long-standing member of his church choir and a member of the Reno County Choral Society.&nbsp;In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his 2 dogs, working on his house, researching his family history and looking through family photos.

Dennis is survived by: his children, Becky (Troy) Vanlandingham, Wichita, Brian (Gaby) Epperson, Kennewick, WA, and Shania Bohringer, Hutchinson; sisters, Judy (David) Vansickle, Newton, Donita (Mike) Harris, Hutchinson, and Andrea (Hardy) Hutchinson, of Hutchinson; and five grandchildren, Caden, Taylor, Santiago, Samuel and Sebastian.

Dennis was preceded in death by: his parents, Donald and JoAnn Epperson.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Celebration of life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, with Reverend Mike Valdois officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2023. Both sophomore first baseman Aspen Goetz and freshman third baseman Olivia Sandoval set the bar pretty high on Friday in the 2023 Hutchinson Community College softball team’s season-opening doubleheader against the Ottawa University JV.

Goetz hit two home runs and Sandoval went 4 for 4 with five RBIs to pace the No. 17-ranked Blue Dragons to a 14-5 victory in Game 1. Eight different Blue Dragons drove in at least one run in Game 2, a 13-4 five-inning run-rule victory over the Braves.

The Blue Dragons start the season 2-0 for the third-straight season. Hutchinson, weather permitting, is scheduled to play at the McPherson College junior varsity next Friday.

Sandoval became the first Blue Dragon since Izzy Godinez in in 2018 to have a four-hit game in the season opener. Sandoval was on base in all five plate appearances with a double, three singles and a walk. Her five RBIs are the first season opener with five or more RBIs in the game since Kiara DeCrane’s six RBIs in the 2018 season opener.

Goetz became the first Blue Dragon in the modern era to hit multiple home runs in a season opener. Goetz also homered in the season opener last year against Fort Scott.

Both Sandoval and Goetz led a 17-hit barrage for the Blue Dragons in Game 1. The Dragons had nine hits in Game 2.

Five different Blue Dragons had multi-hit games in the season opener on Friday.

Sophomore catcher Allie Stipsits also had three hits, going 3 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI.

Sophomores Ella Dougherty and Madison Grimes had two hits each. Freshman Annie Kealey had a bases-loaded triple to camp a four-run fifth and break the game open for a 7-2 lead.

The Blue Dragons trailed 2-0 after one inning, but Sandoval’s two-out single in the top of the second inning drive in two to tie the game. The Dragons took a 3-2 lead when Goetz led off the third inning with a home run to center. Goetz also homered to lead off the sixth inning.

Hutchinson left no doubt with a six-run sixth inning. Grace Sykora and Sandoval each had two-run hits in the inning.

Sophomore Kierstan Weitze came out of the bullpen to earn the pitching victory. She worked three innings with four strikeouts and three hits and one unearned run allowed. Starting pitcher Emily Munson worked the first three innings and settled in after a rough first inning. Munson struck out four and gave up three hits and two earned runs.

The Dragons left little doubt in Game 2 with a seven-run first inning. The Dragons took advantage of five Brave walks. The Dragons had three hits in the inning. Ella Dougherty’s two-out, two-run single plated the final two runs of the inning for a 7-0 cushion.

The Blue Dragons added a single run in the second and five more in the third inning. Alexis Mastin’s RBI double and Jaeleigh Darnell’s first collegiate hit was a two-run single in that third inning.

Ottawa pitching walked nine Blue Dragons. Six of those walks scored.
