Kay A. Mallicoat Schmidt |1940-2023|

Kay A. Mallicoat Schmidt, 81, passed away on January 28, 2023, at The Arbors in Hutchinson.  She was born March 6, 1940, to Darrell “Tom” and Katherine Francis (Ryan) Mallicoat in Des Moines, IA.

Kay graduated from Des Moines North High School in 1958 and subsequently earned an associate’s degree from Grandview College.  She became an X-ray technologist in Iowa City.  After being a homemaker and stay-at-home mother for many years, Kay worked in the microbiology lab at PMS Foods.  Later she was a gifted-education paraprofessional.  Kay loved the outdoors, horseback riding, running, hiking, and traveling the world.  She also loved music and poetry.

She was first married to Felix Tarm and later married Gene Schmidt September 27, 2002, in Santa Fe, NM. 

Kay is survived by: husband, Gene of Hutchinson; children: Susan Tarm (Jeff Mandel) of Minneapolis, MN; Michael (Eve) Tarm of Chicago and Tallinn, Estonia; Viktor (Julie) Tarm of Wichita; and Bill (Charity) Schmidt of Kansas City; grandchildren: Mari-Ann, Michael, Nikolas, Anneliis, Indrek, Inger (Kaarel), Jonas, Brendan, Marley, and Kalev; and 2 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2023, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Chaplain Luanne Haddaway officiating.  The service will be live streamed via the obituary on the Elliott Mortuary website.  Friends may sign the book from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.  The family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m.  prior to the service.

Memorials are suggested to Interfaith Housing, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS, 67501
