Entrepreneurship Bingo coming up Tuesday

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Social Security Administration announced that customers who created an online account (e.g.,&nbsp;my&nbsp;Social Security account) before September 18, 2021, will soon be required to transition to a <a href="http://Login.gov">Login.gov</a> account to continue access to their online services. Over five million of these account holders have already transitioned to <a href="http://Login.gov">Login.gov</a>.

The agency is making the changes to simplify the sign-in experience and align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to online services.&nbsp;

“my&nbsp;Social Security is a safe and secure way for people to do business with us,” said Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley. “We’re excited to transition to <a href="http://Login.gov">Login.gov</a> to access our online services, streamlining the process and ease of use for the public across agencies.”

Account holders are encouraged to sign-in now. When the user logs in, they will be presented with an option to easily transition to Login.gov. Once their account is successfully linked, a confirmation screen will appear, and they will have immediate access to their personal&nbsp;my&nbsp;Social Security services or other service that they were attempting to access.&nbsp;

Existing <a href="http://Login.gov">Login.gov</a> or ID.me account holders do NOT need to create a new account or take any action.&nbsp;

My&nbsp;Social Security accounts are free, secure, and provide personalized tools for everyone, whether receiving benefits or not. People can use their account to request a replacement Social Security card, check the status of an application, estimate future benefits, or manage the benefits they already receive. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Aah'lice Jackson of Hutchinson is the newest&nbsp;Miss Kansas Pre-Teen winner in the National American Miss competition that was held in Omaha earlier this summer. Jackson, 13, has been doing pageants for a long time.

"When I was younger, I got invited by the National American Miss pageant," Jackson said. "Ever since I was five, I've been competing."

She enjoys the people that she meets while doing pageants.

"I've met so many good friends along the way," Jackson said. "Just the fun it brings, with all the directors and the national queens who help us out during the pageant. I think it's really fun and a good, lifelong experience."

The structure of the National American Miss pageant is a little bit different.

"Our three main events are formal wear, an introduction and interviews," Jackson said.&nbsp;

Jackson sees pageants as a good confidence builder and that it gives life skills that are important, including having poise in front of people you don't know. 

She and her family are raising money to get her to the national pageant in Orlando the week of Thanksgiving.

Hutchinson teen wins pageant

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the heat on for the next few days, a great place to go is STRATACA, the Kansas Underground Salt Museum.

"It is always 68 degrees underground but I would recommend making your reservations ahead of time," said Rachel Terry with STRATACA. "We have been selling out all summer. Make your reservations ahead of time at <a href="http://underkansas.org">underkansas.org</a>."

One exception is those with the Sunflower Summer app. You can get in with that with your kids, but going on a morning during the week is probably best, and since it is space available, you need to go early in the day.&nbsp;

"This is our first year on the Sunflower program," Terry said. "It is an amazing program sponsored by the state of Kansas. Get there as soon as doors open so we can get you on a tour."

STRATACA also found out this week that&nbsp;the museum has been named a 2024 Travelers' Choice Award Winner.

"We are very excited about this award," Terry said. "Not only are we ranked number one attraction in Hutchinson, but we are also ranked in the top 10% of all attractions worldwide based off of TripAdvisor reviews."

STRATACA is closed Mondays and opens at 9 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday and at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday.&nbsp;

Stay cool at STRATACA, but plan ahead

KINGMAN COUNTY —On Saturday afternoon, the Kingman County Sheriff's office reported the suspect was in custody. The sheriff's office did not release the suspect name, possible charges or additional details.&nbsp; Check the Post for more information as it is released.

KINGMAN COUNTY —More than 40 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies assisted with this search on Friday and the search will continued overnight, according to the sheriff's office. This subject is not local to Kingman County.&nbsp; Call 911 if you locate or see this subject.

KINGMAN COUNTY —Law enforcement in Kingman County on Friday afternoon asked the public to watch for a suspect last seen southeast of Kingman, according to a social media report from the Kingman County Sheriff.

According to the sheriff's department, deputies found the vehicle but the subject is still at large. Authorities did not release details on a crime in connection with the search.

They asked the public to call 911 if you locate or see this subject.

Long-time Hutch Hospital nurse takes CNO job in Rice County

MCPHERSON, Kan. — On Monday, July 15, 2024, the contractor will begin Phase 4, the final stage of the Lakeside Park retaining wall project. 

In order to move in equipment and supplies, and complete the project, the parking lot directly to the east of the McPherson Water Park and next to Lakeside Shelter 5 will be closed for approximately 70 days.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Gas prices are getting a little bit higher in Kansas, though still better than most of the country.

"Last week we saw a bit of a jump here in Kansas, up about 5 cents in the past week," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "The current average is $3.16 a gallon, but it appears that seems to have stabilized a bit because that's the same price we were at yesterday, significantly lower than the national average as usual, which is $3.53, so we're 37 cents less than the national average, and that puts us here in Kansas at 6th lowest average gas price in the nation, so overall not too bad."

Area counties are on both sides of the state average.

"We did see a bit of a jump with the holiday travel week, but also Hurricane Beryl seemed to have a slight impact on prices," Steward said. "I was looking at the prices in Texas, and they rose about 7 cents, 7 or 8 cents over the past week, and like I said, the Kansas average went up about 5 cents, so because we're relatively close to the Gulf Coast and may receive some of our fuel from that region, the impact of the hurricane on some of those production facilities may have had some sort of impact on our prices here."

Geopolitical movements appear to have slowed, though, so there isn't as much upward pressure on prices from that side. 

"It doesn't appear that there seems to be much movement in terms of geopolitical issues right now and its impact on oil prices," Steward said.&nbsp; "Oil prices do seem to be up a little bit from the last time we talked. I think we're in the $83 a barrel range, which is a little higher than we've seen earlier in the year, but nothing too extreme that seems to be impacting those crude oil prices right now."

The Atlantic hurricane season is always worth watching when it comes to fuel prices. We'll see if any future storms come in that may make an impact in the second half of summer.

Gas prices rising a little as mid-July hits

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair Board told Phil Nightingale at their meeting this week to get dates together for next year for Salt City Racing LLC, because the schedule at the Fairgrounds is filling up fast.

"We've got horse shows that have been here and cattle shows that have been here," said General Manager Bryan Schulz. "I'll just throw it out here, unless the board tells me differently, they are going to have first option on it, because they have been here. We're not going to push that out."

Nightingale has additional sanctioning bodies that would like to race the half-mile, but he's got to work it out with them.

"I'm going to get with them early to get on their schedule," Nightingale said. "That's what I have to do."

A reminder that what could be the biggest event at the fairgrounds racetrack so far in 2024 is scheduled for Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20 as the USAC Silver Crown series will be on the track, with a 100 lap feature scheduled for that Saturday night.

Fair Board asks for 2025 race dates

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Appraiser's Office wants to warn people about a scam - a company in Florida has been sending "Property Assessment Notices" to mailboxes in Reno County. 

Citizens should know that these are NOT legitimate and have no connection with Reno County. 

The Appraiser's Office recommends that people do not pay the $129.95 requested in the mailing. Just throw it away.

Reno County: Mailed notices are a scam

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Circles of Hope Reno County is holding a barbecue later this month.

"That's on July 27th," said Jason Probst with Circles. "It'll be down at the Homebuilders Shelter at Carey Park and it will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day."

They are going to have fried chicken and an opportunity for prospective Circle Leaders and Allies to learn more about the program.

"This year we wanted to open it up a little wider and we're going to have some information there," Probst said. "Anybody that's ever wondered what Circles is about, has wondered if they'd want to be an ally, wondered if they would be, if it would be helpful to them and their family, we're inviting them to come down and spend an afternoon with us."

To be sure they get enough chicken, they need a head count of how many are coming.

Circles BBQ is July 27

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The main discussion on solar regulations in the zoned area of Reno County will happen on Monday, July 29.

"We're talking about private solar and large scale solar," said Reno County Public Works director Don Brittain. "Limited scale is already approved."

The public hearing is to change the language for ground-mounted private solar and to discuss whether or not large scale solar will happen in the zoned areas of the county. 

There is no current authority for the planning commission regarding solar or anything else other than wind in the unzoned area, which is one of the reasons the Board of County Commissioners wants to hear from the currently unzoned areas about whether or not they want zoning.

"We made that public hearing at 5:30 p.m., so that people wouldn't have to take off work and stuff and we'll get more of an audience, so that's at 5:30 p.m. instead of 4:30 p.m."

The other zoning related public meetings in the county are July 22 and 23, before the solar meeting on July 29.

NEWTON, Kan. — The Newton City Commission presented the 2024 Yard of the Year award to Mike and Eydie Fellows at 805 Grandview. Out of 11 nominated yards, the Fellowses’ property ranked especially high in water conservation and curb appeal.

The Fellowses purchased the house in 2006 and slowly fixed it up themselves. They see new things in other yards and try them in their own space, learning what works best for them along the way. The couple tries to consider water conservation, so Mike installed a drip irrigation system. They also like watching birds, so their yard has multiple bird baths. The couple say they hope their efforts for property beautification are contagious to others. They love experimenting and changing it up every so often and say it’s “a work in progress.”

Float and window decor contest winners

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There was a whole lot of agreement on Thursday at the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber candidate forum for state house and senate candidates.&nbsp;

To a man, the Republican candidates for Kansas Senate 34, House District 102 and House District 114 were in favor of further tax relief, especially property taxes.&nbsp;

They all want to see the people who live here stay here and bringing people to the state they believe has to start with making it affordable to live here.

Service is the attitude of all six, candidates Bob Fee and Michael Murphy in Senate District 34, Kyler Sweely and Tyson Thrall in House District 102 and Steve Schweizer and Kevin Schwertfeger in District 114.

The intent is for government to stick to its core functions and those include roads and public safety and education, but it was also a core tenet for all that there be better oversight of the things that government does and that, to the greatest degree possible, government gets out of the way.

The candidates leaned into their vocational and voluntary board experience when looking at what committees to be a part of, and they fundamentally want to see competition and the free market provide solutions.

Hutch Post is working with each campaign to get all of those with competitive races on the radio between now and then so that we can go more deeply into issues individually. 

Also, a community member was recording video of the event Thursday and hopes to provide that in the coming days. When it is available, Hutch Post will upload it.

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — There was a whole lot of agreement on Thursday at the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber candidate forum for state house and senate candidates.&nbsp;To a man, the Republican candidates for Kansas Senate 34, House District 102 and House District 114 were in favor of further tax relief, especially property taxes.&nbsp;They all want to see the people who live here stay here and bringing people to the state they believe has to start with making it affordable to live here.Service is the attitude of all six, candidates Bob Fee and Michael Murphy in Senate District 34, Kyler Sweely and Tyson Thrall in House District 102 and Steve Schweizer and Kevin Schwertfeger in District 114.The intent is for government to stick to its core functions and those include roads and public safety and education, but it was also a core tenet for all that there be better oversight of the things that government does and that, to the greatest degree possible, government gets out of the way.The candidates leaned into their vocational and voluntary board experience when looking at what committees to be a part of, and they fundamentally want to see competition and the free market provide solutions.Hutch Post is working with each campaign to get all of those with competitive races on the radio between now and then so that we can go more deeply into issues individually. Chamber holds legislative candidate forum

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a duplex fire in the 1100 block of West 2nd Thursday at 4:32 p.m.

First-arriving crews found a single-story, multi-family structure with heavy smoke and fire showing from multiple sides of the structure. Upon arrival, crews heard an occupant inside the structure. Crews started an aggressive offensive attack on the fire, pushing their way inside while also conducting a search for possible victims.

The occupant walked out on his own, unharmed. Fire-attack crews found fire in the back part of the home that extended to the attic. The home appeared to be in a state of remodel. Crews were able to extinguish the fire with minimal extension.

No injuries were reported. Fire crews rotated through medical rehab for heat-stress monitoring because of the 100-degree outside temperature. The fire is still under investigation.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON — According to a social media post, Main and Poplar and 7th and 8th streets will be closed until further notice due to a semi accident.&nbsp;

The city made notice of the closures about two hours ago.&nbsp;

Semi accident causes South Hutch street closures

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals made a trade on Thursday afternoon, sending Colin Selby to the Baltimore Orioles.

Selby appeared in two games for the Royals on the mound, going three innings, allowing two hits and three runs. The 26-year old right-handed thrower was designated for assignment by the Royals on July 6.&nbsp;

Selby was traded to the Royals on April 7 from the Pittsburgh Pirates for left-handed pitcher Connor Oliver.

WICHITA, Kan. — League 42 founder and Executive Director, Bob Lutz, has announced the unveiling of the new Jackie Robinson statue will take place on Monday, August 5 at 6 p.m. at McAdams Park.

The <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/fc0c5248-f7bd-47f5-85b7-05426ee1096d">previous Jackie Robinson statue was stolen from McAdams Park in January</a>&nbsp;and was then <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/91f9d290-d505-49a7-b856-f68c96997307">found in late January dismantled and burned</a>.

Lutz said in a Facebook post that League 42 is expecting a large crowd inside the Jackie Robinson Pavilion at McAdams Park.

"We're expecting a large crowd for this event and parking will be at a premium. If you attend, you'll need to park in one of the lots adjacent to the Pavilion on 17th Street near Wabash and Ohio streets. Those lots will fill quickly, and we have around 90 spaces at the Leslie Rudd Learning Center, 1212 E. 17th Street North, just across from the Pavilion. I know this event is going to receive a lot of news coverage and we're expecting some folks from Major League Baseball to attend."

Swearer named chair of SCKEDD board

NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting, the City Commission continued discussions of the 2025 budget and voted to notify the County Clerk that the City intends to exceed the Revenue Neutral Rate. To remain revenue neutral and take in the same amount of revenue as this year, the City would need to lower its mill levy by 7.86 mills.

That’s because Newton’s assessed valuation rose by 12.7% for next year, a large increase after many years of relatively stagnant growth. If the City keeps its mill levy flat next year, it will bring in an additional $1.35 million in revenue.

Although Commissioners agreed it would not be wise to lower the mill levy enough to stay revenue neutral, they remained undecided on where the mill levy should land.

The City Commission has prioritized economic development in recent years to help grow the tax base and create growth in valuation with new construction. Commissioners said they wanted to take advantage of that growth while also giving taxpayers a break. They also said they wanted to keep an eye on long-term budget projections, as they don’t want to reduce too much now and wind up needing large tax increases in future years.

City Commissioners had requested to see some additional budget options that would reduce the tax rate and absorb only a portion of the valuation increase. City staff brought forward some options for budget reductions in the General Fund, including:

Four new swing sets at three parks - $42,000

Elimination of most right-of-way mowing - $13,552

Fire/EMS Department accreditation - $70,000

Various trainings and travel in Admin budget - $10,000

Golf Course transfer for course improvements - $100,000

Reserve for possible wage increases to stay competitive in the job market after a classification and salary study - $447,855

The Commission will continue to discuss budget options on July 23.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the north side of the intersection of East 20th and North Ash.

In 1911, the Kansas State Fair moved into its new, larger property northeast of 20th and Main.

About 1915, two large red brick towers to house the main pedestrian gate at 20th and Ash were constructed.

The Hutchinson Interurban Trolley extended to this point as a drop-off from downtown with a turnaround at this location. The first photo shows the pedestrian gate and towers taken by the Kansas City Slide Co. in 1920.
