​HUTCHINSON, Kan. — An accident at Avenue A and Adams Saturday morning sent one person to the hospital.

According to Hutchinson Police Capt. Dayton Gates, a vehicle was westbound on Avenue A approaching Adams when the driver suffered what police believe to be a medical emergency. 

The vehicle left the roadway in the 100 block of West Avenue A, crossed through the intersection, crashed into a curb and then into a traffic signal pole.&nbsp; The vehicle then overturned and came to a rest on its side with the driver still suspended from her intact seatbelt.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HFD conducted a vehicle extrication and the driver was removed from the vehicle and taken to HRMC with minor injuries as a result from the collision.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The HPD Traffic Unit believed due to the driver wearing her seatbelt, it greatly reduced the injuries she sustained as a result of the collision.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Medical emergency believed to cause Saturday accident

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — "That was fun." "Yeah, it was."

Those were the sentiments of one of the USAC Silver Crown drivers to a crew member coming out from the infield of the half-mile oval at the Kansas State Fairgrounds Friday night as they practiced for the 100-lap feature that will highlight Saturday night's program.

The feeling of anticipation was clear in the infield and the pit area was full, as there was a regular show in addition to the Silver Crown practice laps.

It was a bit of poetic justice that one of the loudest voices in saving the half-mile for a 2024 season won a feature on Friday night.

William Nusser, mayor of Larned and organizer of the Save Our Track group, won the IMCA Stock Car A Feature.

Casey Jo Gemmill won the IMCA Modified A Feature, Super Stocks went to Hutchinson's Jerrod Reimer.

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Pretty Prairie and the Beutler family both have a long tradition of bringing top-notch rodeo performances to fans.

2024 marks the 87th year for Kansas Largest Night Rodeo, and the 95th year for the Beutler’s involvement in the rodeo industry. It also marks the 50th year the two entities have worked together to produce the legendary rodeo – even though there were differing variations of the Beutler business.

The Beutlers got their start in the rodeo business in 1929, when brothers Elra, Jake and Lynn Beutler trailed 10 horses to the Custer County Fair Rodeo in Clinton, Okla.

From there, they decided that they had a good thing going, and a longstanding career for family members was born.

While the Pretty Prairie rodeo was still in its relatively early years, the Pretty Prairie Booster Club contracted with the Beutler Brothers in 1940, and the two would continue to work together through 1946, with the exception of one year when the rodeo went on hiatus because of World War II.

Pretty Prairie and Beutler Brothers resumed their working relationship in 1952 until 1957. By that time, Elra had sold his shares in the company and partnered with Buster Morgan to form Beutler and Morgan Rodeo Producers.

Pretty Prairie worked with both Beutler Brothers and Beutler and Morgan in 1957, and would work solely with Beutler and Morgan for the following two years. Morgan would eventually sell out of the business and Elra’s son Jiggs would join and the company would reform as Beutler and Son – which would continue to provide livestock for Pretty Prairie

For the next three decades, Pretty Prairie would work with other livestock contractors, including Hoss Inman, Bernis Johnson and Fred Dorenkamp, before the Beutlers re-entered&nbsp;the picture.

The Booster Club entered a contract with what was then Beutler and Gaylord, a partnership between Jiggs’ son Bennie Beutler and E.K. Galyord II. Gaylord would leave the rodeo business in 2001, and Bennie’s son, Rhett became the partner, and the two remain familiar faces in Pretty Prairie to this day.

The rodeo wraps up Saturday night in Pretty Prairie. Rodeo tickets are sold out.

Pretty Prairie, Beutler family have 50-year history 

NEWTON, Kan. — The City received word this week that Newton will receive $1.2 million in City Connecting Link Improvement Program (CCLIP) funding from the Kansas Department of Transportation for the next phase of K-15 construction. 

This will be a full pavement reconstruction of Main Street from 11th Street to 13th Street, including the full intersection at 12th and Main. This is a major project that will be coming in the next couple of years.

Newton to use CCLIP money for K-15

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Police in Hutchinson have received several reports of someone calling citizens, making threats and demanding money. 

The callers say they have kidnapped the citizen's child and demand money. The phone number, 620.344.8910, has been showing up as "potential spam" on caller ID. 

If you receive a call from this number, do not send any money or agree to any of the caller's demands, as it is a scam. Simply hang up. 

They encourage you to not answer any phone calls that show up as spam on your caller ID. If you have questions, or want to check the validity of a phone call, you can call the non-emergency number at (620) 694-2816, or call 911.&nbsp;

TROON, Scotland —Former Hutchinson Community College golfer Dominic Clemons' first-ever major championship came to a close on Friday at the Royal Troon Golf Club.

Clemons missed the cut at the 152nd edition of The Open Championship after carding a 7-over 78 second round on Friday.

The former NJCAA All-American finished tied for 136th overall with a 13-over two-day total.&nbsp;

Clemons did finish above some notable names on the leaderboard, including Tiger Woods (+14), Wyndham Clark (+16) and John Daly (Withdrew).

All Driver's License Offices closed today

INMAN, Kan. — Inman High School volleyball standout Suttyn Harris has committed to the University of Utah, Friday morning on X.

The soon-to-be junior is already a two-time all-state selection for the Teutons. She helped guide Inman to a fourth place finish at the state tournament in each of her first two seasons.

University of Utah is a new member to the Big 12 Conference and is located in Salt Lake City.

NEWTON, Kan. — A global network outage that has disrupted business around the world has also affected City of Newton systems.

The Utility Billing Office, Newton Municipal Court and Engineering Office are unable to take payments or access accounts. The software vendor hopes the outage will be resolved before the end of the day but is not able to estimate how long it might take.

The outage was caused when a popular cybersecurity company released a faulty update overnight. The company says it was not a security incident or cyberattack. The City does not use this security software, but some of the software vendors that we rely on do.

Network issues hit City of Newton

WICHITA, Kan. — Hutchinson High School graduate, Caleb Walker, will once again compete in The Basketball Tournament this weekend for the AfterShocks.

Walker graduated from Hutch High in 2008 before going on to play two seasons at Butler Community College in El Dorado and then his final two seasons at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.&nbsp;

Walker moved to Hutchinson when he was 13 after growing up in Kansas City. He won four consecutive state titles as a linebacker on the Salthawks' football team during it's dynasty. He averaged over 19 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game as a senior for the Salthawk basketball team.

The 34-year-old was a crucial piece to the AfterShocks' success in TBT last summer. He is currently playing overseas in France.

The AfterShocks are the alumni team for Wichita State University. They are 11-4 all-time in TBT, including a loss in the quarterfinals last summer.

TOPEKA, Kan. — The monthly labor report that was due out Friday that gives an update on unemployment across Kansas cannot be delivered.

According to the Kansas Department of Labor, "due to a global issue affecting Microsoft and Crowdstrike services, the Labor Market Information Services will be unable to deliver the June Labor Report today. The report will be distributed at a later date."

Labor report delayed

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to a note provided to Hutch Post by Amanda Parks with Midwest Single Source (formerly Roberts Hutch Line) their Hutchinson location is closed today.

"MWSS will be closed Friday, July 19th and hopefully will resume normal operations on Monday, July 22nd," Parks said.

The outage is part of a global issue involving security company CrowdStrike.

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Kansas Largest Night Rodeo is halfway complete, and the top spot in the bull riding is Hutchinson native, Adam (AJ) Mast. Mast scored an 86-point ride on Buetler &amp; Son Rodeo's Bomb Squad on Thursday night.

🐂 Hutch native scores 86-point ride for lead in Pretty Prairie

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Monday, July 22nd, 2024, starting at 6:30 p.m. there will be a Townhall meeting at the Arlington City Hall and&nbsp;Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024, starting at 6:30 p.m. there will be a Townhall meeting at the Pretty Prairie City Office.&nbsp;

The discussion is to find out if rural residents want zoning, once they understand what it is. Reno County Administrator Randy Partington talked about how the first meeting earlier this month went in Nickerson. The other two should work in a similar fashion.

"The intent of the meeting was to kind of find out from residents, mainly those living in the unincorporated unzoned areas of Reno County to kind of get an understanding of whether or not they wanted to look at possible zoning countywide or in their areas," said Reno County Administrator Randy Partington. "Then it kind of led into what their feelings were about commercial solar farms and so the the three county commissioners were just trying to kind of get a gauge of the public's interest for that."

Right now, the majority of Reno County is not zoned.&nbsp;

"About a third of the county is zoned and it's really Hutchinson up north everything east and then when you're south of South Hutchinson it's about Yoder Road," Partington said. "Everything east is zoned, everything west of Yoder Road is pretty much unzoned once you get past South Hutchinson, Hutchinson and Nickerson."

The difference in zoned and unzoned is relatively simple to explain.

"It protects residents property rights there, of the owners," Partington said. "It does have some regulations, so it regulates kind of where you can place buildings. Ag land is exempt, ag buildings are exempt anything over 40 acres would be exempt. This doesn't include any cities in Reno County. What they would do is if they're going to put up a new building or have a lot split of less than 40 acres into five acres, three acres, they would then go through a process pay $50 to the planning department to run through the zoning planning process. Really it's about setbacks of the location of the building on the property that's kind of what it would do, that's the regulations part.  </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Monday, July 22nd, 2024, starting at 6:30 p.m. there will be a Townhall meeting at the Arlington City Hall and&nbsp;Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024, starting at 6:30 p.m. there will be a Townhall meeting at the Pretty Prairie City Office.&nbsp;The discussion is to find out if rural residents want zoning, once they understand what it is. Reno County Administrator Randy Partington talked about how the first meeting earlier this month went in Nickerson. The other two should work in a similar fashion."The intent of the meeting was to kind of find out from residents, mainly those living in the unincorporated unzoned areas of Reno County to kind of get an understanding of whether or not they wanted to look at possible zoning countywide or in their areas," said Reno County Administrator Randy Partington. "Then it kind of led into what their feelings were about commercial solar farms and so the the three county commissioners were just trying to kind of get a gauge of the public's interest for that."Right now, the majority of Reno County is not zoned.&nbsp;"About a third of the county is zoned and it's really Hutchinson up north everything east and then when you're south of South Hutchinson it's about Yoder Road," Partington said. "Everything east is zoned, everything west of Yoder Road is pretty much unzoned once you get past South Hutchinson, Hutchinson and Nickerson."The difference in zoned and unzoned is relatively simple to explain."It protects residents property rights there, of the owners," Partington said. "It does have some regulations, so it regulates kind of where you can place buildings. Ag land is exempt, ag buildings are exempt anything over 40 acres would be exempt. This doesn't include any cities in Reno County. What they would do is if they're going to put up a new building or have a lot split of less than 40 acres into five acres, three acres, they would then go through a process pay $50 to the planning department to run through the zoning planning process. Really it's about setbacks of the location of the building on the property that's kind of what it would do, that's the regulations part. Meetings on zoning and solar in Arlington and Pretty Prairie next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Greater Wichita YMCA and Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System (HRHS) announced Tuesday a partnership that will bring a new state-of-the-art Hutchinson YMCA facility to Reno County.&nbsp;

"We see this as the future of of health and health care delivery," said HRHS CEO Benjamin Anderson. "It will begin with with community, it'll begin with connection, it'll begin with with opportunities to be active and and to learn and to grow and connect families and there's not a stronger organization in the state of Kansas that's doing that than the YMCA of Greater Wichita."

David Foster with the YMCA said construction will take some time.

"We're hoping to to break ground later this year," Foster said. "That may be a little bit as more of a ceremonial groundbreaking, but we're thinking once that happens probably 18 months plus just depending on you know,&nbsp; as long as it takes to get things now, it's a little bit longer of a process. We're hoping to to get that process started at least on the the front end of it later this year for sure."

Foster took a small group of stakeholders from the community down to Newton to take a look at their Y to get a vision for what the new building might have in store.

"That's about the same square footage we're looking at as the Newton Y," Foster said. "It's about 75,000 square feet for the main Y branch and some of the similar amenities, you know, the large fitness space and things of that nature. Each one of our Ys sort of has their own unique layout and some features that that we're looking forward to having here at the Hutchinson Y and obviously building on our strong history of of swimming and aquatics. We'll have a really nice you know more of an indoor water park type family pool with some warm water still for our exercise classes and things of that nature, but also a really nice lap pool for swim meets and things of that nature."

A decision has not been made yet on what will happen with the current YMCA building at 716 East 13th Ave.&nbsp;

YMCA excited about new construction, finished product a while away

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Cannons scored four runs in the top half of the fourth inning Thursday to stop the Hutchinson Monarchs nine-game winning streak, 5-3.

The Monarchs out-hit the Cannons on the night and cut the lead to two with three consecutive hits in the bottom of the the fifth when Blake Bradford knocked in Jaden Gustafson and Will Edmunson both singled with one-out in the inning.

The Monarchs pitching gave up nine walks which led to two runs scored for the Cannons.

The Cannons Ruger Bravo earned the win going seven innings on the mound. Rod Whaley came on in relief only giving up one hit over the last two inning. Ian Regal took the loss for the Monarchs.

Hutchinson's lead in the Jayhawk League now is two games over the Cannons in the second half standings with two more games set for Friday and Saturday night against the Kingman Islanders.&nbsp;

Rice County Community Foundation seeking projects

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Office of the Kansas State Treasurer has learned that a Kansas resident was the victim of a scam by a government imposter. 

The scammer contacted the victim via phone call and claimed to be a representative of the Kansas State Treasurer’s office. The victim was told that he had recently won a sizable sum of money from the lottery. The scammer then informed the victim that collecting his lottery winnings would require a payment.

The victim was directed to wire funds as well as load money onto a gift card and once payment was received, the scammer indicated the State Treasurer would visit his home to present the winnings.

Imposter scammers may call, text or email to begin their scam. They often use caller ID to deceptively appear like the communication is coming from a reputable entity. Any request to make a payment in order to receive funds is likely fraud. Furthermore, any request for payment using gift cards is never a legitimate method a government entity would utilize.

“Imposter scams are a rising trend in Kansas,” said State Treasurer Steven Johnson. “Kansans should be aware that the State Treasurer’s office is not involved in the delivery of lottery winnings.”

The Office of the Kansas State Treasurer is currently the custodian of over $640 million in unclaimed property owed to Kansans. The distribution of those funds to the rightful owners never requires fees to be paid. Individuals and businesses can search for missing money at <a href="http://www.unclaimedproperty.ks.gov">www.unclaimedproperty.ks.gov</a>.

TROON, Scotland — Former Hutchinson Community College golfer Dominic Clemons carded a 6-over 77 opening round at The Open Championship on Thursday at the Royal Troon Golf Club.

Clemons and the other golfers battled heavy rain and strong winds throughout the round. The average score was 3-over par for the field.

The 22-year-old amateur is currently tied for 128th among the field. He finished his round with two birdies, one on the Par 4 seventh and another on the Par 4 13th. Clemons carded a 4-over on the front nine and a 2-over on the back.

Clemons is the first-ever former HutchCC golfer to ever qualify for a PGA major championship.

The trio of Clemons, Stewart Cink and Chris Kirk will tee off at 1:48 p.m. BST (7:48 a.m. CST) on Friday in Round 2.

⛳ HutchCC alum Clemons completes opening round at The Open Championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Friday and Saturday on the half-mile at the Kansas State Fairgrounds will be the crown jewel of the 2024 racing season there thus far, the USAC Silver Crown series.

&nbsp;"It's exciting," said Phil Nightingale with Salt City Racing. "It's been fun this week so far. USAC rolled into town Sunday morning and we have been at the track all week prepping the track getting things ready. We got an exciting race on Friday, but also the big 100 lapper the Murphy Tractor and Equipment 100 lap race is going to be fun."

Friday will have additional classes beyond the USAC cars practice.

"These cars have never been on this track," Nightingale said. "They need some practice to figure out how to set their cars up the right gearing and those sort of things, so basically Friday night we will run a complete show for the stock cars the super stocks and the A-mod modified and then the Silver Crown cars will go out and they will practice about three times. The other fun thing we're having with the URSS sprint cars they will run their heat races and for qualifying for their A-feature on Saturday night, we are going to pay them five hundred dollars just to win a heat race."

Saturday is the main event, with the URSS sprint cars and the Silver Crown cars.

"We're also going to have a full show for what we call the B-mods the B-sport mods," Nightingale said. "They'll have a complete show so it'll be three classes on Saturday."

The 100 lap feature will be a long stretch of action.

"Tommy Estes who's been running the USAC program, he says depending on how many yellows we have he said it'll take a minimum of 45 minutes but it could take up to an hour and 15," Nightingale said. "He says he hopes he gets it done in about an hour is what he's hoping for."

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Friday and Saturday on the half-mile at the Kansas State Fairgrounds will be the crown jewel of the 2024 racing season there thus far, the USAC Silver Crown series.&nbsp;"It's exciting," said Phil Nightingale with Salt City Racing. "It's been fun this week so far. USAC rolled into town Sunday morning and we have been at the track all week prepping the track getting things ready. We got an exciting race on Friday, but also the big 100 lapper the Murphy Tractor and Equipment 100 lap race is going to be fun."Friday will have additional classes beyond the USAC cars practice."These cars have never been on this track," Nightingale said. "They need some practice to figure out how to set their cars up the right gearing and those sort of things, so basically Friday night we will run a complete show for the stock cars the super stocks and the A-mod modified and then the Silver Crown cars will go out and they will practice about three times. The other fun thing we're having with the URSS sprint cars they will run their heat races and for qualifying for their A-feature on Saturday night, we are going to pay them five hundred dollars just to win a heat race."Saturday is the main event, with the URSS sprint cars and the Silver Crown cars."We're also going to have a full show for what we call the B-mods the B-sport mods," Nightingale said. "They'll have a complete show so it'll be three classes on Saturday."The 100 lap feature will be a long stretch of action."Tommy Estes who's been running the USAC program, he says depending on how many yellows we have he said it'll take a minimum of 45 minutes but it could take up to an hour and 15," Nightingale said.
