John Matous, 91, of Wichita, KS, died November 24, 2023, after suffering from a fall. &nbsp;He was born in Lincoln, NE, on January 7, 1932, and was the third child of Stanley and Rose Matous.&nbsp;

John graduated from Wichita North High School in 1951 and married his high school sweetheart, Elda Marie Thomison, in 1951. &nbsp;In 1954, John and Elda made a decision that changed their lives. &nbsp;He decided to go to college and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College where he also played quarterback and led the Gorillas to two conference titles and one national championship. &nbsp;John graduated from PSU in 1958 and pursued a career in education and of course coaching. &nbsp;He taught and coached in several places, including: &nbsp;Adrian, MO, Udall, KS, Larned, KS, and finally at Hutchinson Community Junior College, where he eventually retired in 1992. &nbsp;John was very proud to be the head coach of the Hutchinson Blue Dragon football team for 15 years. &nbsp;He said that he was privileged to have coached some great players and even more great men! &nbsp;John’s overall record was 96-50-6, and in 1969, his team went 11-0 and won the Sterling Bowl. &nbsp;He was inducted into the Hutchinson Community College Quarterback Club Hall of Fame in 2000, and into the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.

After retiring from coaching, John and Elda decided to stay in Hutchinson to raise their family. &nbsp;He was a physical education teacher at HCC and continued to add new curriculum to that program. &nbsp;Courses such as: weight lifting, karate, racquetball, camp counseling, and even a winter survival class. &nbsp;John was constantly looking for ways to create opportunities for young adults to be better, smarter, and stronger. &nbsp;

He loved football and he loved his friends, but most of all, he loved his family! &nbsp;John lived a wonderful and full life, and will be missed by all those whose lives he touched!

John was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Elda Marie Matous, who died in 2015.&nbsp;

He is survived by: &nbsp;his children, Linda (Sach) Mathur, Ken (Ruth) Matous, and Judy (David) Hogan; grandchildren, Brett (Alex) Hogan, Lindsay Hogan, Kendall (Chip) Schellhorn, and Kris (Bethany) Mathur; great-grandchildren, Caroline Schellhorn, Ellie Schellhorn, and Bridgett Mathur; and brother, Jim (Naomi) Matous.

Roxann Louise Rutherford, 74, of Hutchinson, died November 26, 2023, at Hospice House. She was born January 15, 1949, in Hutchinson, to Earl A. and Helen M. (Youngberg) Fenwick.

Roxann graduated from Buhler High School and attended Hutchinson Community College. In addition to being a homemaker, she had worked as a receptionist at Lowen Sign Company, then in shipping at Gregory Sign Company, and then as a clerk at Hobby Lobby for 10 years. Roxann enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting, needlepoint, and crafts. She was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church.

On August 18, 1969, Roxann married Raymond E. Rutherford, in Hutchinson. He survives.

Also surviving are: her sons, Karl Rutherford (Marilee) of Chicago, IL, Kevin Rutherford of Chicago, IL, Kurtis Rutherford (Mary Johnston-Rutherford) of New York City, NY; grandchildren, Finley Rutherford, Aurora Rutherford; brother, Ronald Fenwick (Marsha) of Buhler, and several extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd., Hutchinson, with Pastor Craig Waetke officiating.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released its latest basketball rankings on Monday afternoon, and both HutchCC teams moved up in their respective poll.

The Hutchinson women (8-0, 2-0 KJCCC) moved up one spot to No. 14 in the Top 25 poll after going 2-0 since the last poll was released a week ago.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons defeated NOC-Tonkawa, 80-54 last Tuesday and then beat Colby, 86-46 on Sunday afternoon. Hutchinson will travel to Independence (5-3, 0-3) on Wednesday evening for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against the Pirates.

The Hutchinson men (7-1, 2-0 KJCCC) also moved up a spot to No. 21 in the latest poll. The Blue Dragons were perfect in the last week, as well, going 2-0.

The Blue Dragons beat Labette, 103-54 and Colby, 92-81 in the one-week span since the last poll. Hutchinson will make the trek to Independence on Wednesday to play Independence (1-8, 0-3 KJCCC) at 7:30 p.m.

🏀 Both Blue Dragon teams move up in NJCAA rankings

David R. Goldberg, 71, of McPherson, KS, and formerly a longtime resident of Hutchinson, KS and Virginia Beach, VA, peacefully passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023, surrounded by his family at Pleasant View Home, Inman.

David was born on March 28, 1952, in Seattle, WA, the son of Leon N. and Anita M. (Anderson) Goldberg.&nbsp; He graduated from Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College, and Bethany College.&nbsp; He received his Master’s from Friends University.&nbsp;

He was a former elementary school teacher and also worked in food service at The Cedars and McPherson College.

David was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Hutchinson.

Survivors include his brother, Richard (Diane) Goldberg of McPherson, KS; three nieces, Lynn (Jeff) Smith, Sara (Tom) Miller, and Ruth Goldberg (Nate West); and four great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon &amp; Anita Goldberg, and an aunt, Ruth Ann Goldberg.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Janice (Jan) Kay Stewart, 80, of Nickerson, went to be with the Lord on November 23, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born December 29, 1942, in Hutchinson, KS to Victor and Paula (Broughton) Stange.

Janice graduated from Nickerson High School in 1960, and went on to attend Hutchinson Junior College. For a time she managed hotels in Colorado and Texas, but the majority of her life was dedicated to her family as a homemaker. Janice had a green thumb and loved flowers and gardening. She enjoyed home decorating and did many DIY projects. Janice was also an excellent piano player.

She is survived by: sons, Michael McLemore (Carol), Nickerson, Shawn McLemore (Janie), Nickerson, Kip Stewart (Christy), Claremore, OK, Chad Stewart (Erin Thode), Hutchinson, Troy Stewart, Galveston, TX; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Herb Stange (Beth), Hutchinson; sister, Vicki Horton (Don), Hutchinson; and partner, Ellis “Kip” Stewart, Galveston, TX.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 22-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team pulled away from the Colby Trojans on Sunday afternoon at the Sports Arena in a 92-81 Blue Dragon victory.

Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team survived a tough offensive first half, fought its way back into the game and Sunday's game with Colby open in the final 2 minutes, 28 seconds to earn a Jayhawk Conference victory.

Leading by one point with 2:28 to play, the Blue Dragons outscored Colby 13-3 in the final 2:28 to earn a 92-81 victory over Colby at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons won their third game in a row and improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the KJCCC. The Dragons travel to Independence on Wednesday. Colby fell to 4-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Hutchinson shot just 38.5 percent in the first half and trailed 40-38 at halftime, their second halftime deficit of the season. Colby's largest lead of the opening half was nine points at 24-15 with 8:48 to play in the opening half.

The Blue Dragons turned their offensive fortunes around in the second half, shooting 61.3 percent (19 of 31) with six 3-point goals. JP. Ricks and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>&nbsp;had 13 points each and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/whiteney_dallas_ktg5">Dallas Whitney</a>&nbsp;scored 10 points in the second-half surge.

Leading 79-78 with 2:28 to play in regulation, Ricks started the late scoring explosion with a 12-foot jumper for a three-point lead. The lead quickly grew to eight after Whitney hit a 3-pointer, and then after a Ricks' steal, he had a transition dunk to give the Dragons an 86-79 lead with 1:13 remaining.

The Dragons scored 11 unanswered points, which was snapped by Maxence Massadila's 3-pointer with 18 seconds left.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/simon_valentino_8svq">Valentino Simon</a>&nbsp;capped the late Dragon run with two free throws for a 92-81 lead with 17 seconds to play in the game.

Ricks led the Blue Dragons with a career-high 18 points and tied a career best with three 3-point goals. Ricks added five assists and a pair of steals.

Thomas scored 17 points, going 5 of 7 from the floor in the second half. He had two 3-point goals.

Whitney finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and a career-high-tying six assists off the bench.

Simon had 12 points and seven rebounds. Dre Weathers had 12 points and six rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/holman_zoe_o8t4">Zoe Holman</a>&nbsp;finished with nine points and six assists.

The Blue Dragons finished shooting 48.6 percent (34 of 70) for the game, sinking 10 of 28 3-point attempts and 14 of 18 from the free-throw line. The Dragons out-rebounded Colby 40-38 and Hutchinson had just 11 turnovers to Colby's 14.

Colby's Massadila led all scorers with 28 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the 3-point line. Colby finished shooting 47.8 percent for the game (32 of 67), hitting 9 of 30 from distance and 8 of 11 from the foul line.

Colby had the lead in the game for 22:29, to Hutchinson's 13:22. There were eight lead changes and six ties in the game.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 15-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team saw all 11 players score in an 86-46 win over Colby on Sunday afternoon at the Sports Arena.

The game was postponed from Saturday to Sunday due to the winter weather that made its way through Kansas on Saturday.

Hutchinson (8-0, 2-0 KJCCC) knocked down a season-high 12 three-pointers in the victory, while shooting a season-high 52.5 percent from the field.

The Blue Dragons led 19-11 after the first quarter, but built the lead up to as many as 28 in the second quarter. Hutchinson went into the locker room with a 47-22 lead.

The lead continued to grow in the second half, leading by 42 late in the fourth quarter.&nbsp;

Kiki Smith scored 19 to lead the Blue Dragons in scoring, as the freshman from Topeka has scored in double-figures all seven games this season. Hailey Jackson scored 16, while Journey Armstead had 11 points and nine assists.

The Blue Dragons distributed the ball well in the win, dishing off 23 assists on 31 made field goals. Armstead led the team with nine, while Akaysha Muggeridge had five. Nine different Hutchinson players had at least one assist.&nbsp;

Colby (3-4, 0-3) was held to 34 percent shooting and were led in scoring by Stella McIntyre with 13. The Trojans never held a lead in the contest.

The No. 22-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team hopes to continue a strong KJCCC win over Dodge City and a 49-point victory on Tuesday over Labette into something even larger with a Sunday matinee against the Colby Trojans.

The Blue Dragons and Trojans tip off at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the snowstorm that struck the state on Saturday forced the game to be moved back a day.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station <a href="https://streamdb5web.securenetsystems.net/v5/KHUT">KHUT-FM (102.9)</a> with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live and free on the Blue Dragon Sports Network. The broadcasts begin at 3:45 p.m.

The Blue Dragons have played strong on the defensive end of the floor all season long, but the last two outings have been stellar for Hutchinson.

The Blue Dragons have allowed only 63.5 points per game in the last two games, including a season-low 54-point output by Labette on Tuesday at the Sports Arena. The Dragons have allowed just 38.4 percent overall shooting and forced 22.5 turnovers in double-figure victories over Dodge City and Labette.

Only 3 of 7 opponents have broken 80 points this season against the Blue Dragons.

Offensively, sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>&nbsp;is Hutchinson's leading scorer at 15.6 points per game. Thomas has been sizzling from the 3-point line in the last two games, hitting 8 of his last 10 shots from distance over the past two games.

Hutchinson has been balanced offensively with five players averaging in double figures. The Blue Dragons are shooting 48.0 percent from the floor and are averaging 7.7 made 3-pointers per game.

The Blue Dragons take on a Colby team that has started conference play 0-2 with losses to Garden City and Dodge City. The Trojans' last win was a 73-72 victory over Northeastern Junior College on November 14.

The Trojans average 7.0 made 3-pointers per game and are fourth in the KJCCC in 3-point efficiency at 35.0 percent.

The Blue Dragons (7-0, 1-0 KJCCC) return to conference play after impressively closing the non-conference portion of the schedule on Tuesday with an 80-54 victory over NOC-Tonkawa at the Sports Arena. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/armstead_journey_w1mg">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;led four Hutchinson players in double figures with a game-high 14 points. The Blue Dragons held their sixth opponent to less than 30 percent shooting, limiting the Mavericks to 29.0 percent from the floor.

One week ago, the Blue Dragons opens KJCCC play with a come-from-behind 72-70 victory at No. 11 Dodge City. The Dragons trailed by as many as 12 points and was down by 10 with 3:20 remaining before completing the 13th comeback for a win from a double-figure deficit on the John Ontjes era.

Colby started the season 3-1 before dropped its first two Jayhawk Conference games to Garden City and Dodge City. The Trojans were dominated by Dodge City in their last outing on Tuesday, falling 86-40

Veteran head coach Darin Spence took over the Colby program this season. Colby is the fourth Jayhawk Conference coaching job for Spence, who ranks eighth in KJCCC and Region VI coaching history with 342 victories.

The Blue Dragons have won five consecutive games over Colby, including a sweep of last year's season series with an 87-47 victory at the Sports Arena and 80-41 at the Colby Events Center.

Hutchinson freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;is the sixth-leading scorer in the Jayhawk Conference this season. 🏀 HutchCC games moved from Saturday to Sunday due to winter weather

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 1300 block of East Avenue A on the north side. 

The building at 1326 E. Ave. A was built originally as the 4 S Razor Blade Factory in 1916. It was only able to stay viable until 1918. 

It was then that J.D. Conard, President of the Salt City Business College, had an innovative idea. He started the Hutchinson Auto and Tractor School there as a satellite campus. The first photo shows the architectural renderings for that endeavor. 

It was right next door to the Massey-Harris Manufacturing Plant that produced combines and tractors, so the two worked in tandem. The second photo shows the school with all its students and instructors out front in 1920. 

This endeavor only lasted until 1921, that's when Massey-Harris took over the building. Fast forward to 1970, that's when Martinez &amp; Sons Machine Shop took over the building. The third photo shows that business, which was there until 1993.

That's when Interfaith Housing purchased the building. The fourth photo shows the 1326 E. Ave. A building today, still the Interfaith Housing &amp; Community Services Inc. with Clint Nelson serving as President and Chief Executive Officer.

🏈 NJCAA DI playoff details announced

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team blitzed the Labette Cardinals&nbsp; over the first 7:22 of Tuesday’s matchup at the Sports Arena and became the first NJCAA men’s basketball team to reach 1,900 victories.&nbsp;

The No. 22-ranked Blue Dragons closed the non-conference portion of the 2023-24 schedule Tuesday night at the Sports Arena with a 103-54 victory over the Labette Cardinals.&nbsp;

Hutchinson is now 6-1 and will play host to Colby at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the resumption of Jayhawk Conference play at the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

The all-time winner in victories in NJCAA men’s basketball, Hutchinson is now 1,900-637 in a program history that started in the 1928-29 season.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons dominated from the opening tip, leading the contest for a grand total of 39 minutes, 22 seconds. &nbsp;

The Dragons raced out to a 31-4 lead over the first 7:22 of the game. Hutchinson hit 10 of its first 15 shots, including 6 of its first 8 3-point shot attempts. Edwin Daniel’s fastbreak dunk with 13:38 to play capped the run.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons shot 54.3 percent in the first half (19 of 35), hitting 8 of 20 from 3-point range to build a 54-21 halftime lead. Hutchinson continued its domination in the second half, outscoring Labette 49-33, shooting a blistering 61.3 percent (19 of 31) in the final 20 minutes.&nbsp;

Hutchinson shot a season-high 57.6 percent from the floor (36 of 66). The Dragons tied a season high with 12 pointers on 32 attempts. Hutchinson was 15 of 18 from the foul line. The Dragons also tied a season high with 25 assists.&nbsp;

Six different Blue Dragon players scored in double figures and eight different Hutchinson players hit 3-pointers in the game.&nbsp;

Sophomores Landon Wagler and Dre Weathers led the Blue Dragons offensively. &nbsp;

Wagler scored a career-high 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting with a pair of 3-point goals. Weathers had 14 points and seven rebounds. &nbsp;

Sophomore Kamryn Thomas hit 3 of 4 3-point goals and finished with 13 points. Thomas is 8 of his last 11 from 3-point range in his last two games.&nbsp;

Valentino Simon, Daniel and Dallas Whitney had 10 points each. Kernan Bundy had eight points, while Zoe Holman, Russell Branch and Kobe Smith had seven points each.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons outrebounded Labette 38-27. Weathers had a team-high seven rebounds.&nbsp;

Labette shot 38.2 percent (21 of 58), hitting 5 of 14 from 3-point range and 7 of 8 from the foul line. The Cardinals committed 24 turnovers. &nbsp;

Nickhai Howard had 14 points to lead the Cardinals.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons’ largest lead of the game came with 1:51 to play in the second half when Wagler’s jumper gave Hutchinson a 101-48 lead.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team finished off its non-conference slate with an 80-54 win over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa on Tuesday evening at the Sports Arena.

No. 15-ranked Hutchinson (7-0, 1-0 KJCCC) had four players score in double figures, led by Journey Armstead with 14. Armstead also dished off four assists and knocked down six-of-eight shot attempts.

Hailey Jackson finished with her second double-double of her freshman campaign, going for 13 points and 10 rebounds. Monae Duffy also tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. Kiki Smith rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons shot 57 percent from the floor in the first half to open a 51-19 lead after 20 minutes. The 51 points scored were the most scored by Hutchinson in a first half this season, as well as the 32 second-quarter points.

NOC-Tonkawa (1-7) struggled to score the ball in the first half, shooting just 18 percent on 7-of-38. The Mavericks came out strong in the second half and shot 42 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes, while outscoring the Blue Dragons in that stretch, 35-29.

Hutchinson finished 15-of-18 (83%) at the free throw line, the highest percentage in a single-game this season.

The Mavericks were led by Brooke Robertson with 13 points and Kaydrin Scott with 12 points.&nbsp;

The win marked John Ontjes' 250th home win of his career as the head coach of the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;

🏀 WBB: No. 15 Blue Dragons cruise to seventh straight win

Joanne Lee (Spade) Supernois passed away on November 19, 2023, in her home surrounded by her family.&nbsp; She was born July 29, 1947, to Warren and Wanda (Lewis) Spade in Admire, Kansas. She was the oldest of three children growing up on the family farm.&nbsp; Her parents and brother, Marshall Spade, proceeded her in death.

Joanne graduated from Northern Heights High School in 1965.&nbsp; In 1969 she earned her Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the Kansas State Teachers College (known today as Emporia State University).&nbsp; After graduation, Joanne moved to Newton to begin her teaching career at Newton High School.&nbsp; Her mother came with her to locate a place to live, and they settled on a quaint little apartment above the Supernois Furniture store.&nbsp; This is where she would meet her husband, Jerry, whom she wed in 1970.

Joanne taught at Newton High School as the Vocational Office Education Instructor for 32 years, retiring in 2002. Joanne taught numerous business courses at NHS, but her pride and joy were her students in the Office Education Association, later known as the Business Professionals of America, club classes.&nbsp; Every senior she taught held a very special place in her heart.&nbsp; These students became part of her family while they were in her classroom, and she made herself available to them night or day.&nbsp; There wasn’t a business in town that didn’t employ at least one of her students, or multiple, over the course of her career. &nbsp;Joanne was never afraid to take on a new challenge and prided herself on her work ethic.&nbsp; She took on a job at Taco Tico when a class told her she didn’t know what it was like to work with the public.&nbsp; She thought what better way to learn than fast food.&nbsp; Joanne also took on the 3rd&nbsp;hour in-school suspension class, a health occupations class, taught at the alternative school, and sold admission tickets during school plays, concerts, and sporting events.&nbsp; She was always fundraising for OEA/BPA running concession stands and rock-a-thons during those events. After retirement from NHS, she continued to teach various business courses with Hutchinson Community College for 18 years.&nbsp; Joanne loved playing the piano, learning to play at a young age, so she opened her home and taught children as young as 3 to adults as old as 83 up until Covid hit in 2020.&nbsp; She always had an average of 60 students per year for over 50 years.

Joanne earned numerous awards for her work within the community and classroom.&nbsp; Her top accomplishment was in 2013 when she earned the Outstanding Older Worker Award from the Kansas Works Department of Commerce. &nbsp;They held a banquet in her honor in Topeka and she made the 6 o’clock news and numerous newspapers.&nbsp; She said she had truly accomplished it all with that award!

Outside of her passion for teaching, Joanne was a wife, mother, and devoted grandmother. Joanne’s legacy continues with her loving husband of 53 years Jerry, son Mark (Holly) Supernois of Wichita, granddaughters Brianna and Madison of Tempe, AZ, daughter Lisa (Dan) Timmons, granddaughters Marcella and Ashleigh all of Newton, daughter Kristi Bueno, grandson Alexander all of Newton.&nbsp; Other survivors include her sister-in-law Jan Spade of Emporia and sister Susan (Ed) Ryan of Hoyt along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation is on November 26 from 1:00-5:00PM – family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00PM at Petersen Family Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Trinity Heights on Monday at 10:00AM with a graveside service at 2:00PM at Admire Cemetery in Admire, Kansas.

She was the oldest of three children growing up on the family farm.&nbsp; Her parents and brother, Marshall Spade, proceeded her in death.Joanne graduated from Northern Heights High School in 1965.&nbsp; In 1969 she earned her Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the Kansas State Teachers College (known today as Emporia State University).&nbsp; After graduation, Joanne moved to Newton to begin her teaching career at Newton High School.&nbsp; Her mother came with her to locate a place to live, and they settled on a quaint little apartment above the Supernois Furniture store.&nbsp; This is where she would meet her husband, Jerry, whom she wed in 1970.Joanne taught at Newton High School as the Vocational Office Education Instructor for 32 years, retiring in 2002. Joanne taught numerous business courses at NHS, but her pride and joy were her students in the Office Education Association, later known as the Business Professionals of America, club classes.&nbsp; Every senior she taught held a very special place in her heart.&nbsp; These students became part of her family while they were in her classroom, and she made herself available to them night or day.&nbsp; There wasn’t a business in town that didn’t employ at least one of her students, or multiple, over the course of her career. &nbsp;Joanne was never afraid to take on a new challenge and prided herself on her work ethic.&nbsp; She took on a job at Taco Tico when a class told her she didn’t know what it was like to work with the public.&nbsp; She thought what better way to learn than fast food.&nbsp; Joanne also took on the 3rd&nbsp;hour in-school suspension class, a health occupations class, taught at the alternative school, and sold admission tickets during school plays, concerts, and sporting events.&nbsp; She was always fundraising for OEA/BPA running concession stands and rock-a-thons during those events. After retirement from NHS, she continued to teach various business courses with Hutchinson Community College for 18 years.&nbsp; Joanne loved playing the piano, learning to play at a young age, so she opened her home and taught children as young as 3 to adults as old as 83 up until Covid hit in 2020.&nbsp; She always had an average of 60 students per year for over 50 years.Joanne earned numerous awards for her work within the community and classroom.&nbsp; Her top accomplishment was in 2013 when she earned the Outstanding Older Worker Award from the Kansas Works Department of Commerce. &nbsp;They held a banquet in her honor in Topeka and she made the 6 o’clock news and numerous newspapers.&nbsp; She said she had truly accomplished it all with that award!Outside of her passion for teaching, Joanne was a wife, mother, and devoted grandmother. Joanne’s legacy continues with her loving husband of 53 years Jerry, son Mark (Holly) Supernois of Wichita, granddaughters Brianna and Madison of Tempe, AZ, daughter Lisa (Dan) Timmons, granddaughters Marcella and Ashleigh all of Newton, daughter Kristi Bueno, grandson Alexander all of Newton.&nbsp; Other survivors include her sister-in-law Jan Spade of Emporia and sister Susan (Ed) Ryan of Hoyt along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.Visitation is on November 26 from 1:00-5:00PM – family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00PM at Petersen Family Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Trinity Heights on Monday at 10:00AM with a graveside service at 2:00PM at Admire Cemetery in Admire, Kansas.Memorial contributions can be made out to Good Shephard Hospice in care of Petersen Family Funeral Home.

Before his move to Colorado, Benjamin served as CEO of Kearny County Hospital, a comprehensive rural health care delivery facility in Lakin, Kan. that serves patients of 30 nationalities within a 180-mile radius. During his six and a half years there, he led the organization through a period of rapid growth, expanding patient access to coordinated primary care and&nbsp;specialty services.

New CEO hired at Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System

Lewis Oliver Twyford Jr. 77, died November 17, 2023, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was born September 3, 1946, in Liberal, Kansas to Lewis Oliver Sr and Gene (Bryan) Twyford.&nbsp; On September 21, 1979, he married Paulette E. Hunter at Lyons, Kansas and she survives of the home.&nbsp;

Lew retired after 35 years from Eaton Corporation.&nbsp; He attended Wichita State University, Pittsburg State University and Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; He served his country in the United States Navy and was a member of a search and rescue helicopter crew during the Vietnam War.

He was an avid guitarist and shared his love for music, creating lasting memories with family and friends. Lew was a compassionate man who had a deep love of animals. His kindness and generosity touched the lives of both two legged and four legged friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lew was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, and he leaves behind a legacy of caring and compassion to the next generation of family.

He is survived by his wife Paulette; daughters: Michelle (Shane) Guthrie; Wendy (Jim) Bockstoce; Kristy Twyford and Terri (Kevin) Davis; sister Judy Schremmer (Doug) and his cat Scruffy.&nbsp; He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Lew is preceded in death by his parents and sister Viola Twyford.&nbsp;

A graveside service with military honors will be announced at a later date and will be held in the Winfield Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas.

Memorials may be made to the Caring Hands Humane Society and left with Petersen Funeral Home.

Bernice Catherine Petz, 96, passed away peacefully on Nov. 19 at Olathe Hospice House having spent the day with her children. 

Born Aug. 28, 1927, in Menlo, KS, she was the daughter of Frank &amp; Rose (Mannebach) Moos.

She married Raymond Petz on Dec. 30, 1947,in Ellinwood and they were married nearly 63 years. He passed away Oct. 5, 2010.A four-year resident of Olathe, KS, Bernice was a longtime Ellinwood resident.She enjoyed a successful career as a legal assistant with G.I. Robinson, Attorney at Law; and later retired as an Executive Assistant to the President of Barton County Community College.Bernice enjoyed spending time with her family and friends as well as watching and attending sporting events including the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs,Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas State Wildcats, and the Salina Liberty. She also followed her grand and great-grandchildren’s activities.She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ellinwood; a member of the Altar Society; and the Daughters of Isabella, recognized for 75 years of service,including having served as Regent and State Regent.Survivors include sons, Kenneth (Jean) Petz, Thomas (Susan) Petz, Merle Petz,and Carl (Melinda) Petz; daughters, Kay (Larry) Thompson, Carmen (Francis)Flax, and Melba (Dan) Detmer; 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 2 great, great-grandchildren; and sister Thelma (Moos) Cole; and several nieces and nephews. Bernice was preceded in death by husband Raymond Petz; her parents; brothers Gene, Richard and Larry; sisters Ermina Moos, Velma (Moos) Wornkey,and Delores (Moos) Bressler.Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 27 at St. Joseph Church,Ellinwood with Father Terrance Klein officiating. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery, Ellinwood.
