Constance ‘Connie’ Joan Lathrop, 85, died June 6, 2024, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, KS. &nbsp;She was born October 8, 1938, in San Jose, CA, to Charles Stallings and Lucille (Waggoner) Stallings.

Connie was a graduate of Ellinwood High School, Ellinwood, KS, and attended Barton County Community College, Great Bend, KS. &nbsp;Connie was involved in her husband’s floor covering business.&nbsp;

Prior to moving to South Hutchinson, KS, she attended Heartland Community Church, Great Bend, KS. Throughout her life she was active in the church and was passionate about serving and providing leadership for the church youth programs, such as the Youth Group, Sunday School, organizing retreats, and establishing youth Christian coffee houses in Ellinwood, KS and Saint John, KS. &nbsp;Connie was an avid student of the Bible. &nbsp;She loved her family and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.

On October 23, 1955, Connie married Arlyn LeRoy Lathrop, in Ellinwood, KS. &nbsp;They shared over 65 years of marriage, prior to his death on December 5, 2020.

Connie is survived by: &nbsp;her children, Mike (Betty) Lathrop of Monet, MO, Leslye (Walter) Carithers of Hutchinson, KS, Carol (Mark) Pauls of Bloomfield, NJ, and Angela (Jim) Hill of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Shawn (Amber) Carithers, Chris (Sierra Badley) Carithers, Catie (fiancé Andy McCormick) Lathrop, Beth Hill, and Tina Hill; great-grandchildren, Ava Carithers and Daniel Arlyn Carithers; sister, Barbara Wilson of Nash, OK; and lifelong friend, Jean Peevyhouse of Yoder, KS.

She was preceded in death by: &nbsp;her parents; husband; and sister, Diana Meyer.

Memorial service will be 9 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2024, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel. &nbsp;Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, Claflin, KS. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

The Wichita Sports Commission will host the 26th&nbsp;Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet, Wednesday, June 26th&nbsp;at Intrust Bank Arena. At the event, local amateur and professional athletes will be recognized for their accomplishments. Greater Wichita Area Athletic Directors were sent nomination forms in April, and members of the local media voted to determine the finalists.

This year’s featured speaker, former NBA player Maurice Evans, will be in attendance alongside San Francisco Giants legend and 2008 National Collegiate Catcher of the Year, Buster Posey. The 2012 National League MVP and three-time World Series Champion will announce the 2024 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Hutchinson Public Schools Board of Education held their regularly scheduled meeting on June 10th&nbsp;with a light agenda. The Board approved all items. There were two action items.

First, Supplemental Salary Recommendation presented by Jon McLean, Director of Activities. This item requested three additional coaches, two for wrestling and one for cheerleading. The wrestling program has seen explosive growth since 2020-2021, now serving over 60 student-athletes. The additional wrestling coaches not only provide the recommended ratio of participants to coaches but allows for better competition coverage as Varsity Boys, Girls, and Junior Varsity frequently compete at different sites on the same day. The Hutchinson Middle School girls wrestling program made its debut in the 2023-2024 school year and is expected to flourish in the years to come.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Salthawk Cheerleading program is requesting a second assistant coach to supervise the freshman level squad. This would bring the number of coaches to three which better aligns with NIAA &amp; KIAA recommendations. There are three levels of cheerleading: Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman. NIAAA and KIAAA recommend 1 coach per 16-20 students in non-contact activities such as cheer. Salthawk Cheerleading has experienced a notable resurgence in recent years, rebounding from its lowest numbers in 2021 to become a highly competitive program once again. The 2023-2024 team brought home Superior ratings for team and individual performances during their end of year competitions.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The request for additional coaches was presented to the supplemental committee, made up of members of HNEA and the USD 308 administrative team and passed unanimously. The total cost would be approximately $13,000. After the Board’s approval the final approval will occur with the ratification of the contract for the 2024-2025 school year.

Second, was the purchase of a welder for HCTEA. HCTEA received Board approval to purchase 10 Lincoln Electric 300C welders for the Welding Technology program. These welders are multi-process machines that meet industry standards and curriculum outcomes set by the Kansas Board of Regents Welding program alignment, as well as course competencies for the Kansas Department of Education Manufacturing Pathway. These welders will replace existing equipment. Trade-ins of the existing welders were included in 2 of the 3 sealed bids from vendors.

The District’s strategic plan for 2024-2028 outlines career and technical education as a competitive advantage. Hutchinson High School’s Career &amp; Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) programs offer 23 career pathways. The award winning program is delivered in conjunction with Hutchinson Community College. In May, the program and its students competed in the SkillsUSA Kansas State Championships held in Hutchinson on the CTEA campus. 22 students placed in the top three, 6 gold winners qualified for the National conference to be held later this month, and Alan Beck was recognized for Outstanding Service Award. The program was recognized with the Quality Chapter Award and the Largest 5/6A Chapter Award with 102 members. In 2023, HCTEA was named Best Technical/Trade School by The Hutchinson News.

All other items were approved unanimously. During Board Discussion, Boardmember Cheryl Thompson asked to revisit the current agreement with the YMCA. This was directed to be put on the next meeting agenda. Mary Jane Janzen, 83, died June 7, 2024, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born January 3, 1941, in Lucas, KS, to Paul and Wilma Dean (Girton) Brozek.

Mary graduated from Lucas High School and attended Salt City Business College for two years. She worked for Consolidated Manufacturing and Western Foods in Hutchinson.

Along with her passion for bowling, Mary enjoyed gardening, shopping, and cherished her family deeply. Her dedication to remembering birthdays and anniversaries ensured her loved ones felt special and speaks volumes about her caring nature.

On April 14, 1979, she married Levi D. Janzen in Hutchinson. They shared over 38 years of marriage, prior to his death on January 6, 2018.

Mary is survived by: her children, Aldon (Alma) Isenberg, Steve (Norma Jane) Isenberg, Marlo (Doug) Janzen, Michelle (Dale) Bird; siblings, Aldon (Fredda) Brozek, Zina (Lonnie) Hayden, Bob (Janice) Brozek; 9 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Levi Janzen; parents; parents-in-law, Abe and Elizabeth Janzen; son, James Daniel; brother, Emery Brozek; and sister, Erma Jeanne Isenberg.

Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th Ave. Hutchinson with Pastor Tonya Wenger officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Elliott Mortuary.

Leona M. Whited Bratcher, 94, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024, at Brookdale, McPherson.&nbsp;

Leona was born on July 26, 1929, near Lindsborg, KS, the daughter of Johan Hjalmar Ernest and Ethel Aurora Christina (Falen) Jacobson.&nbsp; She graduated from Lindsborg High School and attended Bethany College.&nbsp;

She worked at Swick-Guth as a machinist and was a telephone switchboard operator, nurse aid, and shoe dept. manager at Walmart.

On March 21, 1953, Leona was united in marriage to Wayne B. Whited in Lindsborg, KS.&nbsp; He died February 27, 1993.&nbsp; She married B. Ray Bratcher on April 3, 1997, in McPherson, KS.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on June 18, 2022.

Survivors include six children, Gary Wayne Whited (Arnell) of Hutchinson, KS, Ron Whited (Carolyn) of Grifton, NC, Wanda Weyand (Robert) of McPherson, KS, Mike Bratcher (Lou Rice) of Houston, TX, Kent Bratcher (Rhonda) of Yukon, OK, and Gary Bratcher (Donna Taylor) of Dallas, TX; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and four brothers, Henry, John, Vernon, and Delbert Jacobson.

Terry M. Fisher, 76, of Hutchinson, died May 31, 2024, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, surrounded by loved ones. He was born July 24, 1947, in Nashville, KS, to James D. and Mary A. (Vierthaler) Fisher.

Terry graduated from Nickerson High School in 1965 and later from McPherson College. During his life, he worked at the City of Hutchinson and then in sales for Water Products, McPherson for over 20 years. Terry cherished his family; he loved spending time with them. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing softball. Terry was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson. He was very active in his church, participating in RCIA and Adoration.

On November 30, 1966, he married Sharon K. Walters in Hutchinson. They shared over 57 years of marriage before his passing.

Terry is survived by: wife, Sharon Fisher of Hutchinson; daughter, Deanna Fisher-Borders and husband, Todd, of Merrifield, MN; son, Micheal Fisher of Spring Branch, TX; grandchildren, Brittany (Stephen) Hicks of Pequot Lakes, MN, Marcus Fisher of Seattle, WA, and Brooklyn (Kody) Bartels of Merrifield, MN, and Payton Fisher of Carrollton, TX; great-grandchildren, Oliver Travers, Bradley and Charlie Hicks of Pequot Lakes, MN, Poppy, Henrick, Tulla, and Milo Bartels of Merrifield, MN; brothers, Jim Fisher of Scott City, KS, Richard Fisher of Sterling, KS, and Mark Fisher of Ingalls, KS; sister, Mary (Curtis) York of Healy, KS; sisters-in-law, Cindy (Phil) Hornbeck of Partridge, KS, and Beverly (Manuel) Pacheco of Albuquerque, NM.

With four high school friends, Friesen formed IdeaTek Systems, Inc. in 1999 with just $250 each. The friends went their separate ways during college, but Friesen stayed on – building the company while earning degrees in management information systems and business administration.

In 2005, Daniel led IdeaTek into telecommunications by purchasing and improving failing dial-up and DSL companies. This success funded the first fiber-to-home service in Buhler in 2007, followed by Inman, Haven, Yoder, Mount Hope and Bentley. ​​​

The company has been through many different growth cycles – from dialup and DSL to rural cell towers and leading earlier initiatives in small-cell mobile networks. Last year, IdeaTek secured state grant funding to construct 400 miles of fiber connecting farms, feedlots, and rural residents along the U.S. 83 Highway corridor from Liberal to Dodge City.

Beyond building fiber to communities, IdeaTek is partnering with state broadband officials to bridge the digital divide by building a "middle-mile" fiber network. This critical infrastructure will connect major cities and institutions across the state, making it easier and more cost-effective for any service provider to extend high-speed internet to unserved communities.

“Fiber internet is the gold standard for internet connectivity, and we want to bring this technology to as many communities as possible,” Friesen said. “With fiber, we are providing a new foundation for innovation, creativity and progress in the age of the digital economy.”

A campaign centered around 25 years of IdeaTek Internet Freedom will begin in June. The company will also showcase its history at their Internet Cafe at the Kansas State Fair.&nbsp;

IdeaTek celebrates 25 years

TOPEKA, Kan.&nbsp;- The Kansas State High School Activities Association has selected sites for the 2025 KSHSAA state basketball championships. All seven sites have hosted at least once previously.&nbsp; &nbsp; After hosting the 1A Division I state championships last season, the Colby Event Center has been selected to host the 1A Division II state championships in 2025. The 2A tournaments will return to their traditional home at Bramlage Coliseum after a year&rsquo;s hiatus.&nbsp; &nbsp; The KSHSAA continues to have a strong relationship with Barton Community College who has hosted the 1A Division II Tournaments the last three years. Colby will be the fourth community to host the 1A Division II state championships since the class split into divisions in 2011. In 2019, Class 1A held a single tournament without divisions. &nbsp; &ldquo;The student-athletes, coaches, school communities and officials who participated in the 1A Division I tournament in Colby last year had a great experience,&rdquo; KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick said. &ldquo;Colby was given a chance last year and hosted great championship tournaments. We know they will do the same in 2025. 🏀 KSHSAA announces 2025 state tournament sites

Barbara Blanche Buskirk was born September 30, 1937, to Wm. Alexander (Alex) Richards and Dorothy (Dresher) Richards in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; Barbara died May 23, 2024, age 86, in Marquette, KS, where she resided at the Riverview Estates.

Barbara’s childhood years through high school were in Hays, KS. She excelled academically and in music, graduating valedictorian of her high school class. With scholarships, she attended and graduated from the University of Kansas and served in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica.

The Peace Corps experience was the highlight of her life and further instilled a desire to serve and aid internationally. Barbara would fondly recall meeting Robert F. Kennedy, brother to the President of the United States, and Sargent Shriver, Director of the Peace Corps, as they visited the inaugural sites of the Peace Corps in the early 1960s.

Barbara continued her education in anthropology and archeology at a graduate level at the University of Kansas, Mexico, and at Exeter in England. And outside of formal structured education, Barbara traveled with her parents for archeological digs in Southwest United States and Mexico.

Barbara’s life was surrounded by her Native American heritage and belief system.&nbsp; Her love of nature, the imperative of protecting the earth, climate and all of creation were primary influences for her decision making. Barbara loved animals, and they were important companions to her at every stage of her life. From a 40 year old mare at the western Kansas farm of her father’s family, to the milk cows at the central Kansas farm of her other grandparents, and her faithful loving cat, Victoria, by her side in the final years of her life, she lived in harmony with nature and thrived in those relationships.

Barbara later taught at Baker University and Ottawa University in Kansas.&nbsp; On December 27, 1981, Barbara married Leroy Buskirk, and they made their home near Lindsborg, KS. They raised a big garden and marketed produce in the area.&nbsp; Both Barbara and Leroy were talented singers and for many years, sang with the Bethany College Oratorio Society in performances of Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s St Matthew’s Passion.&nbsp; She continued her love of singing until her death.

An important mission of Barbara’s, as long as she was able to knit, was, with the help of others she recruited, to make dozens of pairs of mittens for children related to the Haskell Indian Nation in Lawrence, Kansas.&nbsp; Barbara was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lindsborg, where she sang in the choir and participated in study groups and worship.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Leroy who died June, 1995.

Barbara was buried in the Heart Land Prairie Cemetery, New Cambria, Kansas.&nbsp; Notes of condolence may be sent to Stockham Family Funeral Home, McPherson, KS.

Kennedy, brother to the President of the United States, and Sargent Shriver, Director of the Peace Corps, as they visited the inaugural sites of the Peace Corps in the early 1960s.Barbara continued her education in anthropology and archeology at a graduate level at the University of Kansas, Mexico, and at Exeter in England. And outside of formal structured education, Barbara traveled with her parents for archeological digs in Southwest United States and Mexico.Barbara’s life was surrounded by her Native American heritage and belief system.&nbsp; Her love of nature, the imperative of protecting the earth, climate and all of creation were primary influences for her decision making. Barbara loved animals, and they were important companions to her at every stage of her life. From a 40 year old mare at the western Kansas farm of her father’s family, to the milk cows at the central Kansas farm of her other grandparents, and her faithful loving cat, Victoria, by her side in the final years of her life, she lived in harmony with nature and thrived in those relationships.Barbara later taught at Baker University and Ottawa University in Kansas.&nbsp; On December 27, 1981, Barbara married Leroy Buskirk, and they made their home near Lindsborg, KS. They raised a big garden and marketed produce in the area.&nbsp; Both Barbara and Leroy were talented singers and for many years, sang with the Bethany College Oratorio Society in performances of Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s St Matthew’s Passion.&nbsp; She continued her love of singing until her death.An important mission of Barbara’s, as long as she was able to knit, was, with the help of others she recruited, to make dozens of pairs of mittens for children related to the Haskell Indian Nation in Lawrence, Kansas.&nbsp; Barbara was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lindsborg, where she sang in the choir and participated in study groups and worship.Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Leroy who died June, 1995.Barbara was buried in the Heart Land Prairie Cemetery, New Cambria, Kansas.&nbsp; Notes of condolence may be sent to Stockham Family Funeral Home, McPherson, KS.

Judy (Koehn) Pauls, 77, of Hutchinson, Kansas passed away on 24 May, 2024 at Sunshine Meadows in Buhler, Kansas.

Judy was born 2 November 1946 to Elton Simon Koehn and Martha J (Wedel) Koehn in Newton, Kansas; they preceded her in death. &nbsp;She graduated from Halstead High School in 1964, attended Marymount College for one year, then completed her Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Elementary Education at Wichita State University. &nbsp;She married Roger Pauls on 23 December 1966; he preceded her in death. &nbsp;They are survived by one daughter, Jennifer Pauls (Bryce Kuhlman) of Gilbert, Arizona. &nbsp;She is also survived by her sister Kathy Koehn (Mick Groom), brothers Steve Koehn (Jodi Koehn) and Rob Koehn (Carol Koehn), nieces Jesse (Josh), Leah, Emily (Zach), &amp; Karli (Jason), six great-nephews, and a great-niece. &nbsp;Judy later entered into a committed relationship with Steven Howell; he survives her as does his mother Marge (his father Mel preceded her in death), son Jeff (Kaylee) &amp; granddaughter Audrey. &nbsp;

After graduation, Judy started her career teaching Special Education at Sunflower School. &nbsp;Soon after, she was hired to teach fourth grade at Moundridge Elementary School. &nbsp;Two years later, she got the opportunity she had been waiting for, teaching first graders, and she jumped at it. &nbsp;“Mrs. Pauls” loved her students and enjoyed watching them grow up and teaching their children. &nbsp;

In 1980, she and Roger bought 80 acres of land in the Sand Hills outside of Burrton and designed &amp; built their dream home. &nbsp;They had a pond, wild blackberries, and a large garden that produced huge harvests that Judy cooked, canned, froze, and shared with family and friends. &nbsp;With room for a big dining table, Judy took over hosting holiday meals for the extended family. &nbsp;She was an excellent cook, known for her butterhorn rolls (recipe from Martha Koehn), tomato tart (recipe from Martha Stewart), and many other tasty dishes. &nbsp;She shared the love and supported her daughter’s (and other family members’) cooking habits with many gifts of quality tools, cookbooks, and sage advice.

Judy was a master of needlepoint and other crafts. &nbsp;Christmas was definitely her favorite holiday and she stitched &amp; crafted countless ornaments/decorations to fill her home and give away.

Roger, the first love of her life, died unexpectedly in 1985.

A few years later, Judy met Steve Howell, the second love of her life. &nbsp;She took a sabbatical from teaching and then early retirement as they transitioned to living in Bella Vista, AR. &nbsp;There, they enjoyed making new friends, golfing, and time on the water. &nbsp;

They moved to Hutchinson in 2005 to be closer to family. &nbsp;Judy and her sister enjoyed taking cooking classes at the Cook’s Nook, eating out, and planning menus for the big holiday get-togethers that she happily resumed hosting. &nbsp;Every summer she would corral the family into coming over and helping “put up corn.” &nbsp;They’d get twelve dozen ears and everyone would help shuck, strip, and pack the corn into bags, frozen for Thanksgiving, Christmas &amp; Easter.

When her parents passed, she and Kathy spent a year preparing for their estate sale - meticulously going through the house. &nbsp;It was an emotional time, made easier because they were sisters. &nbsp;

Though she didn’t have students anymore (or grandchildren… sorry, Mom) she had a special place in her heart for her local grand-nephews (Henry, Luke, Sam, Quenton, &amp; Lincoln) and loved seeing them &amp; planning special treats when they visited. &nbsp;

A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2024, at First Mennonite Church of Christian, 719 S. Christian Avenue, Moundridge. &nbsp;Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Friends may sign her book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;

Vera Nadine Graber, 81, of South Hutchinson, died on June 3, 2024, at The Arbors-Hutchinson. &nbsp;She was born on May 28, 1943, at the home of her parents Willard and Della Goering Wedel in Pretty Prairie.

Vera graduated from Pretty Prairie High School in 1961 and Hutchinson Junior College in 1963. &nbsp;On July 19, 1963, she married Gary Graber at the Pretty Prairie Mennonite Church. &nbsp;They moved to Manhattan where Gary finished his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, while Vera worked for the K-State Agronomy department. &nbsp;In 1966 the family moved to Nickerson. &nbsp;Vera was a homemaker until 1974 when she was hired by the Nickerson Bank. She retired from the bank in 1998.

Vera thoroughly loved gardening and cared for many plants in her backyard greenhouse. &nbsp;She enjoyed cooking and other crafts such as sewing, counted cross-stitch and painting. &nbsp;She won a blue ribbon at the Kansas State Fair for her painting of a barn. &nbsp;Vera was also helpful when Gary was restoring and showing vintage cars.

She is survived by: husband, Gary; son Darin (Andrea Pischnotte) Graber of South Jordan, UT; daughter, Joni (Scott) Oakes of Oklahoma City, OK; son Mike (Angela) Graber of Hoschton, GA; and grandchildren, Landon and Macie Graber.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Alice Graber; and brother, Glen Wedel.

Visitation will be Friday June 7, 2024 from 6 pm – 8 pm at Journey@South Hutch, 808 S. State Representative Leslie “Les” Ray Mason of McPherson, Kansas died Monday, June 3, 2024 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita at the age of 69.

Les was born on October 11, 1954, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His parents, Gertrude and Reverend Floyd Mason, moved to Nebraska and later McPherson, Kansas where Les spent most of his childhood.

Les was a graduate of McPherson High School in 1972 and Central Christian College of McPherson in 1974 with a degree in business and marketing. He married Kala Ann Archer on April 3, 1976. They had 3 children, Christopher, Jennifer, and Angela. He initially worked at Green’s Furniture in McPherson and later for W.R. Mill in McPherson as a sales manager. He left WR Mill to start a home-based business, Mason Marketing. This later became The Old Muffin Factory. The company made muffin and pancake mixes that were shipped all over the country. Les and Kala operated a retail store, The Old Muffin Factory, in McPherson for several years. The store closed in 2008 as they transitioned back to shipping the mixes before their retirement in 2018 due to Kala’s cancer. Les and Kala were married for 44 years before Kala lost her battle with cancer in April 2020.

Les met Victoria Runco Paluck in 2020, and they were married on September 3, 2022. The two loved to travel together and spend time in McPherson and Topeka, Kansas, Castle Rock, CO and Scottsdale, Arizona. They had the opportunity to travel to Taiwan together with other members of the Kansas legislature in October 2023. They also enjoyed spending time with friends and family and camping at Kanopolis Lake.&nbsp; They especially enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren and attending their school and sport activities.

Les has been active in the McPherson community as a member of the Kiwanis Club in McPherson, Chamber of Commerce, and the United Way Board. Les was a member of Dick Nichols' campaign for Congress in 1990. Les has been a Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives for the 73rd district since 2014. He has served many roles in the House, most recently as Mentor of Freshman members of the House, the House Assistant Majority Leader, and Chair of the Social Services Budget Committee.

He is preceded in death by his late wife, Kala Mason. He is survived by his wife Victoria, his son Christopher (wife Brooke, son Cole) of Hutchinson, KS, daughter Jennifer of McPherson, KS and daughter Angela Brunk (husband Jesse, daughter Danica) of McPherson, KS; Stepson Ryan Paluck (wife Kyla, sons Korbin and Kash). He is also survived by his brother David Mason (wife Peggie).&nbsp;

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Monday, June 10, 2024, at Countryside Covenant Church, 940 E. Northview Ave., McPherson.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, June 11, at Countryside Covenant Church with Rev. Jon Black officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Dillon Lecture Series has announced its remaining speakers for the 2024 season.

In addition to the previously announced Steven Ford (actor and son of former President Gerald Ford) on September 17, the 2024 Series has added Jerome Tang, head men’s basketball coach of Kansas State University on October 8.

Coach Tang, who was selected as the 2023 Werner Ladder Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year after guiding the Wildcats to a 26-win season and its 13th trip to the Elite Eight in his inaugural season, recently completed his second season as the 25th head men's basketball head coach at Kansas State.

Tang is just the third coach in the program's history to be selected National Coach of the Year, joining Fred "Tex" Winter (who presented a 2003 Dillon Lecture) in 1958 and Jack Hartman in 1980, while he is the fourth head coach from a Big 12 institution to earn the honor from the Naismith Trophy. He was a candidate for nearly every other National Coach of the Year honor in 2022-23, including finishing as the runner-up for The Associated Press award. In addition, he was the consensus Big 12 Coach of the Year, earning the honor from both the league coaches and the AP.

Dillon Lecture Series Finalizes 2024 lineup 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College sophomore Olivia Sandoval has been named a second-team All-American, the NJCAA announced Tuesday.

Sandoval was a pivotal part in helping guide the Blue Dragons to their first-ever appearance in the NJCAA World Series. The sophomore from Newton hit .471 with 70 RBI and six home runs. She was second on the team with 96 total hits this spring.&nbsp;

During her time as a Blue Dragon over two seasons, Sandoval played in 111 games, and holds a .451 career batting average. She finished her career with 129 RBI and eight home runs. Sandoval ends her career with the most doubles ever hit by a HutchCC softball player, 43.

🥎 HutchCC's Sandoval named NJCAA All-American

George Thomas Waggoner, also affectionately known as “Daddy Wags,” passed away on June 2, 2024 due to complications from a lung infection following his remission with lung cancer.&nbsp;

George was born on May 8, 1959 to Carl E. and Mabel L. Waggoner from Belle Glade, FL. After the passing of his parents, Theodore P. and Marilyn R. Waggoner of Highland, IL became the guardians of him and his siblings. He graduated from Highland High School (Illinois) in 1977, and went on to play college baseball at Hutchinson Community College. While attending HCC, he met Amy E. Howell and they married on July 25, 1980. &nbsp;They had three children: Carl Rex Waggoner of Hutchinson, KS, Casey Renée Ruzicka (Dave) of Marshfield, MO, and George Calyn Robert Waggoner (Nicole) of Hutchinson, KS. George and Amy also consider Amanda Unruh (Tony) of Kansas as their “other” daughter. Altogether, there are eleven grandchildren: Ashton, Samora, Jacob, Landon, River, Mackenzi, Blaise, Elara, Jordan, Tucker, and Ember.&nbsp;

George believed in the importance of having a great work ethic and highly valued people and customer relationships. His favorite jobs revolved around these ideals. &nbsp;During his life, he enjoyed working as a home siding applicator, a sales and marketing representative for a food brokerage, and co-founding the roofing division of Phoenix Restoration and Roofing (owned by family members, Ryan and Robin Swanson).

George was his grandchildren’s greatest fan in all of their activities and interests! He was always celebrating their achievements and encouraging them. He coached youth basketball and baseball teams, and was also quick to congratulate the successes of any player – anywhere and anytime. He was a member of the Sons of American Legion Post 68 (Hutchinson) and volunteered for over 30 years at the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, serving as the Chairman of the Dressing Room and Equipment Committee. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed sharing his passion for sports with his family. Family get-togethers were HUGE to George, and he loved doing the cooking and trying out new recipes. He also enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, and living in the country.

Jack L. Craig Sr.,76, of Enterprise passed away Thursday May 30, 2024 in Junction City, Kansas. Jack was born August 17, 1947 in Hutchinson Kansas, the only child of Ernest F. (Pete) Craig and Clemmie Scott Craig.

After Jack graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1965, he attended Hutchinson Jr. College followed by Sterling College. While at Sterling, Jack spent two years as a fill-in minister at Abbyville Baptist Church. It was at Sterling College that Jack met Barbara Harms. They were married on June 7, 1970. Jack attended Central Baptist Seminary in Kansas City. Jack then took his first charge at First Baptist Church in Chapman, Nebraska. His ordination ceremony was held November 4, 1973. Jack and Barbara began their family in Nebraska with the birth of their first child, Susan, in July 1973, and son Jack Jr. (JL) in October of 1975.

On January 1 of 1978, Jack took his next charge at the First Baptist Church of Enterprise, Kansas. Jack’s youngest son, Scott, was born in Kansas on March of 1980. In addition to his time as a minister, Jack served as a substitute teacher as well as a volunteer firefighter both in Nebraska and in Dickinson County Kansas. In 1994, Jack became Sexton of Mt. Hope cemetery and served in that position until his death. In 1998, Jack retired from ministry in the Baptist Church. Jack and Barbara moved into Enterprise, and Jack then served as custodian of Enterprise Elementary school a position which he held for 19 years. In October of 2001, Jack came out of pastoral retirement and began serving the Solomon Yoked Parish where he served for 10 years.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Barbara. Jack is survived by his daughter Susan and her husband Dr. Todd Frieze of Chapman; his son JL Craig of Enterprise; his son Scott Craig and his wife Samitha of Tacoma, Washington; and grandchildren Emma and Elyssa of Chapman and Haroun and Zaara of Tacoma.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2024 at the Chapman United Methodist Church, 426 Sheeran Chapman, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening, June 21, 2024 at the Chapman United Methodist Church. Inurnment will follow the funeral service at Mt. Hope Cemetery south of Enterprise.

Charlotte, NC - The <a href="https://njcaafoundation.com/landing/index" target="_blank">NJCAA Foundation</a> has announced the 2024 Champion Award recipient will be Barton Community College men's basketball player, Myles Thompson. This prestigious award will be presented during the NJCAA Foundation Awards event held on Thursday, June 6 at the Hilton Charlotte University Place at 6:30 PM ET. The event will recognize the NJCAA Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year, the Lea Plarski Award winner, the Champion Award winners, and the Difference Maker Award winner, in addition to the 2024 class of the NJCAA Hall of Fame.&nbsp;

The Champion Award was established to honor a member or former member of the NJCAA community who exemplifies resilience, excellence, and passion.  &nbsp;

Myles Thompson began his collegiate career at Barton Community College (KS) where, as a freshman, averaged 7.1 points and 5.5 rebounds. Entering his sophomore season, he thought it would be like any&nbsp;

other year. Thompson, a 6-foot-7 Hutchinson native, played basketball his whole life and was never once worried or concerned about injury or illness. However, things took a turn six weeks before the start of his sophomore season when he fell ill. Receiving medication for a cough and fever, Thompson thought he was back on his way to Barton for a second season, but a week later, he was sick again with all symptoms returning and pain in his right ankle. After experiencing severe rigors and shaking chills, Thompson was hospitalized for 20 days, during which doctors continuously tried to figure out what was going on, and his future in basketball was in question. It was found that Thompson had a blood infection and required surgery on his leg. The surgery was a success and Thompson was headed towards recovery but the question of if and when he'd ever be able to return to basketball was still looming.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After surgery, he returned home to Hutchinson and required daily antibiotics for six weeks. Thompson attempted to return to school but due to his compromised immune system,contracted clostridium difficile and was bedridden for an additional three weeks. Thompson struggled during this time,losing 20 pounds along the way and still being unsure of his athletic future. Through countless physical therapy sessions and a daily regimen of four different antibiotics, Thompson recovered and returned to practice in February 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rededicating his time and efforts to basketball, Thompson began to work&nbsp;out and train with his former high school coach, Bryan Miller. He would wake up earlyto work out&nbsp;with the high school players in the morning and then lift weights and practice his shots in the evening. Thompson's constant efforts and determination&nbsp;allowed him to step back onto the court&nbsp;at&nbsp;Barton&nbsp;for the 2023-24 season. Through his resilience,&nbsp;character, and faith, Thompson was able to help lead the Cougars to the 2024 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship title.&nbsp;This past season, Thompson started in all 37 games for the&nbsp;Cougars,&nbsp;averaging 14.0points per game with 6.7&nbsp;rebounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 MBB: Hutch High grad named NJCAA Foundation Champion Award winner

THERESA TEUFEL Hutchinson Municipal Band

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —The Hutchinson Municipal Band continues its 2024 Season, its 149th year of performances. Regular Tuesday concert performances are to be held from June 4, 2024, to July 9, 2024, on the campus of Hutchinson Community College. All performances of the Hutchinson Municipal Band are free of charge and open to all members of the public.

One of the oldest three bands in the state, the Hutchinson Municipal Band has consistently provided free music to the City of Hutchinson and Reno County since 1875. Even during war and pandemic, the band has offered free music to all citizens each summer for 149 years. The ensemble comprises musicians from Hutchinson, Reno County, and surrounding communities and counties.

The Concert Band, under the direction of Abby Giles (Sterling Public Schools), Alex Meek (Buhler Public Schools), Dan Brinkley (Nickerson/South Hutchinson Public Schools), and Charlene Reynolds (St. Paul’s Lutheran School), will perform each Tuesday from June 4, 2024, through July 9, 2024 at 8 p.m.

Ms. Giles will conduct the June 11, 2024, concert. Mr. Meek will conduct the June 4, 2024, and July 2, 2024 “Patriotic Concert” performances. Mr. Brinkley will conduct the concerts on June 18, 2024, and July 9, 2024. Finally, Mrs. Reynolds will conduct the June 25, 2024, concert and the July 4, 2024, “Patriot’s Parade” band.

The recently completed Hutchinson Community College Pavilion, located in the courtyard behind Lockman Hall, will serve as the new performance location this summer for regular Tuesday performances. It will replace the recent concert space used at the Hutchinson Zoo. Limited handicap parking is available next to the concert venue on a first-come, first-serve basis. The band is excited to bring the sounds of summer to Reno County residents on the Hutchinson Community College campus for the entire community to enjoy.

As has been the tradition since its founding, all the musicians are local, with most being non-professional musicians with varying backgrounds who represent a true cross-section of the Hutchinson community. Since its inception, the Band has provided summer concerts every year on Tuesdays, presenting a combination of concert and jazz band performances.

The Concert Band presents band classics, marches, show tunes, movie soundtracks, and patriotic music, while the Salt City Jazz Band presents big band and jazz music. In addition, the Hutchinson Municipal Band also offers its service throughout the year with the Hutchinson Brass Quintet. Finally, the band makes regular appearances throughout the community as requested including annual participation in numerous community events, including the Patriot’s and Holiday parades.

Regular Tuesday concert performances are to be held from June 4, 2024, to July 9, 2024, on the campus of Hutchinson Community College. All performances of the Hutchinson Municipal Band are free of charge and open to all members of the public.One of the oldest three bands in the state, the Hutchinson Municipal Band has consistently provided free music to the City of Hutchinson and Reno County since 1875. Even during war and pandemic, the band has offered free music to all citizens each summer for 149 years. The ensemble comprises musicians from Hutchinson, Reno County, and surrounding communities and counties.The Concert Band, under the direction of Abby Giles (Sterling Public Schools), Alex Meek (Buhler Public Schools), Dan Brinkley (Nickerson/South Hutchinson Public Schools), and Charlene Reynolds (St. Paul’s Lutheran School), will perform each Tuesday from June 4, 2024, through July 9, 2024 at 8 p.m.Ms. Giles will conduct the June 11, 2024, concert. Mr. Meek will conduct the June 4, 2024, and July 2, 2024 “Patriotic Concert” performances. Mr. Brinkley will conduct the concerts on June 18, 2024, and July 9, 2024. Finally, Mrs. Reynolds will conduct the June 25, 2024, concert and the July 4, 2024, “Patriot’s Parade” band.The recently completed Hutchinson Community College Pavilion, located in the courtyard behind Lockman Hall, will serve as the new performance location this summer for regular Tuesday performances. It will replace the recent concert space used at the Hutchinson Zoo. Limited handicap parking is available next to the concert venue on a first-come, first-serve basis. Municipal Band to hold first Tuesday night performance

David Ross “Dave” Hederstedt, 83, of Hutchinson, died May 7, 2024, at his home. &nbsp;He was born August 22, 1940, in Salina, Kansas, to Ross and Myrtle (Veitch) Hederstedt.

Dave graduated from Salina Central High School in 1958, received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kansas in 1962, and his Juris Doctor degree from KU School of Law in 1965. He served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1969 as an officer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG). &nbsp;Dave then went to work in Lyndon, Kansas, for seven years in a private law practice with the firm Coffman, Jones &amp; Hederstedt. &nbsp;In 1975, he joined the First National Bank of Hutchinson Trust Department as a Trust Administrator. &nbsp;Dave retired as Senior Vice-President and Trust Officer for the bank in 2006. &nbsp;He was a member of the Reno County Bar Association and the American Bar Association.&nbsp;

Dave was actively involved in the Hutchinson community, serving on various boards of directors, and he was a strong advocate in Hutchinson and the State of Kansas for individuals with disabilities. &nbsp;His involvement included chairman of the Board of Directors for the Training and Evaluation Center of Hutchinson (TECH) and chairman of the Kansas Planning Council for Developmental Disabilities Services. &nbsp;Dave also served on the boards for Beyond Barriers (formerly Prairie Independent Living Resource Center), the Disability Rights Center of Kansas, the Hutchinson Public Library, United Way of Reno County, and the Delos V. Smith Senior Citizens Foundation. &nbsp;In addition, he served on the advisory committee for the Hutchinson Community College Legal Assistant program, was president of the Ambassadors Club for the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce and was treasurer of Reno County Special Olympics Athletic Club. &nbsp;Dave was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Hutchinson, where he served on the Vestry.&nbsp;

On October 9, 1987, he married Valerie Ann (Walker) Tunnell, in Hutchinson. &nbsp;

Dave is survived by: &nbsp;his wife of 36 years, Valerie Hederstedt of Hutchinson; children, Sarah Blake (Chuck) of Hutchinson, Laura Hederstedt (Lance Irby) of Mission, KS, and Sam Hederstedt of Hutchinson; stepdaughters, Shawna Tunnell (Jamie Kanski) of McLean, VA, Julie Jimison (Scott) of Manhattan, KS, and Lori Landron (Carlos) of Hutchinson; five grandchildren, T. J. Briggs (Tucker), Rachel Kephart, Annie Blake, Charlie Kephart, and Joe Blake; eight step-grandchildren, Adam Jimison (Chelsi), Alex Clifford (Taylor), Josh Jimison (Rachel), Casey Jimison (Sarah), James Kanski, Sheridan Kanski, Grace Prigmore, and Jordan Kanski; step-great-grandchildren, Sloan Jimison and Cash Clifford; and good friend, co-parent and co-grandparent, Rae Pat Hederstedt of Hutchinson. Dave is also survived by cousins and many dear friends from all phases of his life. He truly loved his family and friends.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepdaughter, Renée Speicher-Prigmore.

Memorial service will be June 6, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 2 Hyde Park Drive, Hutchinson, with the Deacon Todd Ray officiating. &nbsp;Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. &nbsp;The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. to service time at the church.&nbsp;

Following the service, everyone is invited to a come and go reception honoring Dave beginning at approximately 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. at the Polo Bar &amp; Grill, 25 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson. &nbsp;If you are not able to attend the church service, you are still welcome to join the family at the reception.&nbsp;
