David Ross “Dave” Hederstedt, 83, of Hutchinson, died May 7, 2024, at his home. He was born August 22, 1940, in Salina, Kansas, to Ross and Myrtle (Veitch) Hederstedt.
Dave graduated from Salina Central High School in 1958, received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kansas in 1962, and his Juris Doctor degree from KU School of Law in 1965. He served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1969 as an officer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG). Dave then went to work in Lyndon, Kansas, for seven years in a private law practice with the firm Coffman, Jones & Hederstedt. In 1975, he joined the First National Bank of Hutchinson Trust Department as a Trust Administrator. Dave retired as Senior Vice-President and Trust Officer for the bank in 2006. He was a member of the Reno County Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Dave was actively involved in the Hutchinson community, serving on various boards of directors, and he was a strong advocate in Hutchinson and the State of Kansas for individuals with disabilities. His involvement included chairman of the Board of Directors for the Training and Evaluation Center of Hutchinson (TECH) and chairman of the Kansas Planning Council for Developmental Disabilities Services. Dave also served on the boards for Beyond Barriers (formerly Prairie Independent Living Resource Center), the Disability Rights Center of Kansas, the Hutchinson Public Library, United Way of Reno County, and the Delos V. Smith Senior Citizens Foundation. In addition, he served on the advisory committee for the Hutchinson Community College Legal Assistant program, was president of the Ambassadors Club for the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce and was treasurer of Reno County Special Olympics Athletic Club. Dave was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Hutchinson, where he served on the Vestry.
On October 9, 1987, he married Valerie Ann (Walker) Tunnell, in Hutchinson.
Dave is survived by: his wife of 36 years, Valerie Hederstedt of Hutchinson; children, Sarah Blake (Chuck) of Hutchinson, Laura Hederstedt (Lance Irby) of Mission, KS, and Sam Hederstedt of Hutchinson; stepdaughters, Shawna Tunnell (Jamie Kanski) of McLean, VA, Julie Jimison (Scott) of Manhattan, KS, and Lori Landron (Carlos) of Hutchinson; five grandchildren, T. J. Briggs (Tucker), Rachel Kephart, Annie Blake, Charlie Kephart, and Joe Blake; eight step-grandchildren, Adam Jimison (Chelsi), Alex Clifford (Taylor), Josh Jimison (Rachel), Casey Jimison (Sarah), James Kanski, Sheridan Kanski, Grace Prigmore, and Jordan Kanski; step-great-grandchildren, Sloan Jimison and Cash Clifford; and good friend, co-parent and co-grandparent, Rae Pat Hederstedt of Hutchinson. Dave is also survived by cousins and many dear friends from all phases of his life. He truly loved his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepdaughter, Renée Speicher-Prigmore.
Memorial service will be June 6, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 2 Hyde Park Drive, Hutchinson, with the Deacon Todd Ray officiating. Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. to service time at the church.
Following the service, everyone is invited to a come and go reception honoring Dave beginning at approximately 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. at the Polo Bar & Grill, 25 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson. If you are not able to attend the church service, you are still welcome to join the family at the reception.
