HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Maria Newboles is the Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month for January.&nbsp; She teaches religion and social studies to fifth and sixth graders at Holy Cross Catholic School in Hutchinson.

Newboles comes from a family of teachers.&nbsp; She didn't plan to become a teacher, but as a Hispanic immigrant from Venezuela, she had to learn English when she moved to the United States.&nbsp;

Newboles said one day she was thinking about her future, and being bilingual becoming a teacher was a natural for her. Newboles has taught at all grade levels, from second grade to the current fifth and sixth grade level.&nbsp;

Her religion is important to her. Especially teaching about her faith and Jesus. She added the best part of her day is when you know and see that you have reached your students.&nbsp;

Said Belen Dryden who nominated Newboles, "“Maria has had my daughter as a student. The impact she made on her is so comforting. and unconditional that now she moved on to junior high she still asks to go see Maria and say she misses her so much Maria's heart is so big for all her students she is the kindest person ever she now has my son in her class and he loves her.”

Newboles' class received Pizza Hut pizza and ice cream from Braums to commemorate her honor.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KIOWA COUNTY —The Kansas Highway Patrol investigating a fatal&nbsp; car crash during a weekend pursuit have identified the victim who died as Jerry Wayne Thompson.

Thompson and the car were being sought as part of a homicide investigation in Anderson County, according to a media release from the KHP.

Just after 9p.m. Saturday, troopers saw the car traveling eastbound on U.S. 54 west of Greensburg. A troopers began to conduct a traffic stop, the car pulled over to the shoulder and stopped. After the trooper made verbal contact with Thompson, he fled and a pursuit ensued.

The Kiowa County Sheriff's office successfully deployed stop sticks on the fleeing vehicle approximately one mile west of Greensburg. The car traveled off the road into the south ditch, struck a field entrance, went airborne and rolled. Thompson was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car.&nbsp; He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased.&nbsp; &nbsp;Investigators recovered a loaded firearm from the crash scene.

The KHP Critical Accident Response Team responded to the scene and is investigating.&nbsp; The homicide is under investigation in Anderson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol crash log says that the vehicle was eastbound on US 54. During the pursuit the vehicle left the roadway and entered the south ditch, impacted a field entrance and went airborne.&nbsp;

After landing, the vehicle rolled multiple times coming to a rest in a field.&nbsp;

KHP Technical Trooper Anthony Calderon said in an email to Hutch Post that the notification of next of kin is still in progress and then other information will be released.

The Blue Dragons won the team title after scoring 58.5 points. Coffeyville was second with 48.25 points and Barton was third with 48 points.

Thid captured his first event title of the season, winning the 600-meter run with a meet-record time of 1:19.42. That's the second-fastest indoor 600 time in Blue Dragon history and is just .07 seconds off the Hutchinson school record. Thid's time also eclipsed the NJCAA national qualifying standard. Teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/lester_da-shawn_ptrw">Da'Shawn Lester</a>&nbsp;just missed qualifying for nationals with a third-place time of 1:20.89, which ranks fourth in team history, just .25 seconds off the national qualifying standard.

LeGrand won the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:27.25. LeGrand was the 2024 NJCAA national runner-up in the 1,000 meters. Teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/rotich_thaddaeus_ec60">Thaddaeus Rotich</a>&nbsp;placed seventh in the 1,000 with a time of 2:35.80

Freshman sprinter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/makalo_kebba_vl76">Kebba Makalo</a>&nbsp;qualified for nationals in two events on Saturday. Makalo posted the fourth-fastest indoor 200-meter time in Blue Dragon history and qualified for nationals with a time of 21.54 seconds. Makalo placed sixth in the 60 meters and qualified with a time of 6.80 seconds, which tied for eighth in Blue Dragon indoor history.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/mangelson_farrin_7y5g">Farrin Mangelson</a>&nbsp;was Hutchinson's fourth qualifiers on Saturday, placing third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:32.83, which is the second-fastest time in program history. Right behind Mangelson was teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/kogo_cornelius_hf87">Cornelius Kogo</a>, who placed third with a time of 8:34.75, which is the third-fastest Blue Dragon time and just .23 seconds off the national qualifying standard.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/kiprotich_titus_hgfs">Titus Kiprotich</a>&nbsp;was fifth in a time of 8:37.72.

The Blue Dragons had two other Top 8 placers on Saturday. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The rehabilitation project at the old Landmark Hotel is set to begin in February.  

Lori Meyer Dick told Hutch Post that they had meeting with the subcontractors and that on Wednesday they “put the hammer down” to start the rehabilitation. &nbsp;

It was 22 months ago that they began writing the grant paperwork to begin the rehabilitation. &nbsp;They do have a construction plan and hope to have the apartments ready for occupancy in mid 2026. &nbsp;&nbsp;

However, because of the historical nature of the building, they have made some changes to the floor plan, and instead of the original 40 expected apartments they will now only have 36. &nbsp;&nbsp;

This is because they must keep the hallway plan as it is. &nbsp;The Landmark Hotel is a historical site and is on both the National Register of Historical Places and the Kansas Register of Historic Places. &nbsp;&nbsp;

She addressed the concern about parking for the apartments.  She stated that they own the property to the north of the hotel, and that the architect is working on a gated parking lot for tenants. &nbsp;

The rosters for the&nbsp;annual Eight-Man All-Star Games have been revealed. The game will be played on Saturday, June 7 in Beloit. The rosters were voted on&nbsp;by the Eight-Man Football Coaches Association.

The Division II game will kickoff at 10 a.m. while the Division I game will begin at 1:30 p.m.

UPDATE: Reno County Emergency Management Director Travis Vogt said that they responded to a call for a carbon monoxide leak with 16 employees having symptoms. &nbsp;

EMS evaluated the workers, and they refused treatment or transport. One worker began feeling ill the previous day and went home sick. That worker went to the emergency room this morning to be evaluated because he was still feeling ill.&nbsp;

The fire department found low levels of carbon monoxide in the warehouse, but they were unable to identify the source. &nbsp;

Straightline industries is contacting a contractor to locate the source of the carbon monoxide. &nbsp;

YODER, Kan (Hutch Post) — Hutch Post has learned that Reno County EMS&nbsp;is on the scene of an incident in the 1800 block of East Wasp Road. This is at the Hutchinson Naval Station site south of Hutchinson. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Reno County Dispatch confirms that there are multiple patients but would not confirm what the situation was. &nbsp;

Incident at Naval Air Base leaves multiple people injured 

NEWTON, Kan. (Hutch Post) — The Kansas Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CPOST) has revoked the CPOST certification for a former Newton Police Officer. &nbsp;

Former Newton Police Officer Wyatt Blasi has had his CPOST certification revoked following an indicent from September of 2024. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Blasi was notified in a Summary Order of Revocation dated Dec. 23, 2024 that CPOST has revoked his law enforcement certification. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Blasi is accused of lying about the presence of NARCAN in a patrol vehicle he was on and overdose call in September 2023. &nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the report, “On September 2, 2024 Respondent (Blasi) and his Field Training Officer (FTO) responded to an overdose call and were among the first to atrive on scene. After entering the home, Respondent's FTO requested Respondent go outto their patrol vehicle and retrieve NARCAN. Respondent complied and checked the map pocket in the passenger side door, the glove compartment and the back hatch area but did not find the NARCAN.” &nbsp;

The order continues to say that “Respondent re-entered the home and advised his PTO he couldn't find the NARCAN. By this time, EMS had arrived and revived the overdose patient”&nbsp;

After addressing the medical emergency, evidence of illicit substances were observed. The report says, “Respondent's PTO requested Respondent process the evidence. With his body camera rnnning, Respondent processed the evidence and secured the evidence in the back of the patrol vehicle. Respondent then walked to the driver's side of the vehicle, opened the door, and noticed the NARCAN in the door map pocket.”&nbsp;

The report continues, “Respondent immediately shut the door, locked it, and walked towards the house, however, when he reached the front yard, he turned around and returned to the patrol vehicle. Respondent then opened the door, retrieved the NARCAN and pushed the NARCAN under the front seat.”&nbsp;

Blasi eventually told his FTO that he found the NARCAN under the front seat. &nbsp;Ten days later the FTO was reviewing the body cam video to prepare a report on the status of the officer’s training. &nbsp;The report states, “During the review she observed Respondent pushing the NARCAN under the front seat. Respondent's PTO immediately reported the incident to&nbsp;the Newton Police Department (NPD) administration”. &nbsp;

The NPD administration, a supervisor asked Blasi about the location of the NARCAN. Blasi lied to the supervisor but later admitted that he lied to his FTO and the supervisor. &nbsp;

In the conclusion the board stated “Respondent intentionally used false statements in official communications when he lied to his FTO and NPD supervisor. Respondent's dishonesty was not in furtherance of a legitimate law enforcement purpose.”&nbsp;

Blaisi’s law enforcement certification was revoked, and he was ordered to surrender and all evidence of law enforcement certifications &nbsp;

Blaisi was a full-time officer for the newton police department from June 2022 and August 2023 and August 2024 to September 2024.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of South Main on the west side.

In 1906, automobiles started showing up in Hutchinson, but don't forget about motorcycles. They were becoming extremely popular too and dealerships were the key to distribution.

The Excelsior Company of Chicago was originally a bicycle builder. The company introduced its first motorcycle in 1905. The Hutchinson Cycle Company at 3 S. Main became the company's dealer. The first photo shows that dealership as well as the Oxford Cafe at 5 S. Main in 1912.

The 1912 Excelsior Auto Cycle had more horsepower than the 1911 model and they dropped the price, so it was selling like hotcakes. The second photo shows an original 1912 Excelsior Twin with belt drive.

A 1912 Excelsior was the first motorcycle to be officially timed at a speed of 100 mph. The Excelsior Co. was later bought out by Schwinn and ceased motorcycle production in 1931 because of the Great Depression. The third photo shows the 3 S. Main location today: the south part of Apron Strings, owned by Anne Dowell, and Keller Music at 5 S. Main, owned by David Keller.

The Blue Dragons are now 13-6 overall, 9-4 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Barton (15-4, 9-4) ended the first half and started the second half on a 10-0 run to go from down 31-28, to up 38-31 with just over 18 minutes to play. The Cougars built the lead up to 10, but saw the Blue Dragons continue to chip away at the lead.

After Barton led by 12, it's largest lead of the game, with 2:08 to play, Hutchinson pulled within four, but never got any closer.

The Cougars dominated the glass, out rebounding the Blue Dragons 43-34, including 22 offensive rebounds. Barton scored 22 second chance points. Barton also committed just six turnovers.

Hutchinson shot 50% from the floor, including 11 of 18 from behind-the-arc. The Blue Dragons had 16 turnovers in the loss, which resulted in 16 Cougar points.

Bo Aldridge and Kobe Smith each had 19 points apiece to lead the Blue Dragon scoring. D.J. Dudley had 17, while Mikhail Abdul-Hamid finished with 12 and Khalil Arnold 11.

Barton was led by Keandre Kindell with 24 points and five assists. The Cougars hit 28 of 34 from the foul line, including many down the stretch.

Hutchinson is now 18-1 overall, 12-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons finished off the regular season sweep of the Cougars.&nbsp;

Landon Forbes knocked down seven 3-pointers for a career-high 21 points to lead the Blue Dragons. The seven made 3-pointers were one shy of tying the single-game record in program history. Forbes also dished off six assists and tallied four steals, and did not commit a turnover.

Hailey Jackson scored 19 points to go along with six rebounds.&nbsp;

Hutchinson led 15-14 after the first quarter and 32-27 at halftime. The Blue Dragons outscored the Cougars 17-10 in the third quarter and 14-9 in the final frame.

The Blue Dragons struggled to shoot it from the floor, knocking down just 36% of their shots, but hit 10 3-pointers.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Derby Panther girls came to the Salthawk Activity Center Tuesday night and came away with a win in convincing fashion 51-34.

Hutch High jumped out to a quick 6-4 lead midway through the first quarter but then Derby really turned up the defensive pressure forcing Hutchinson turnovers and getting banked in three pointers offensively to pull away and cruise to the win.

Derby held the Salthawks allowing only Kaia Smith and Grace Posh to register baskets in the first half. Smith had 12 points and Posh 2 at the intermission break.

"That is the best defense we will see all year" 2nd year Hutch&nbsp; High head coach Kalen Hilst stated on his post-game coaches show. "We've just got to get better and not turn the ball over as much" he added.

Derby, with a very young team just kept coming in waves. Macayla Askew led the Panthers in scoring with 12. The Panthers had very even scoring up and down the roster. Freshman Alex Dinsmore scored 9 and Aysia Fox added 7.

Hutchinson was led in scoring by Smith with 20 and Posh with 7.

The Salthawks are off until next Monday night when they travel to Maize South for a make-up game with the Mavericks that was postponed from January 7th. Later next week they will participate in the McPherson Invitational Tournament. The bracket for that tournament should be released soon.

On the agenda for the meeting is the reorganization of the Board of County Commissioners. &nbsp;The board will appoint a new commission chairperson and vice chairperson for the upcoming year. &nbsp;&nbsp;

On the consent agenda is the authorization of the purchase of a new brush truck for Reno County Fire District number four. &nbsp;This purchase is necessitated by the fact that the current truck they have now has well exceeded its life span. &nbsp;

Bids were taken on the purchase of a 2025 Ford F550 brush fire truck from Rusty Eck Ford and the truck bed from Prairie Poly Manufactauring. The project amount is to not exceed $125,000.&nbsp;

The funds will come from the special equipment fund of Fire District number four. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The existing truck, which is on loan from the Kansas Forestry Service will be returned to them when the new brush truck is completed. &nbsp;

The county commission meeting will begin at 9 am in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.&nbsp;

On the agenda is the authorization to purchase four new Sheriff’s Office Patrol Vehicles. &nbsp;The office has the approval to purchase four new patrol vehicles. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The sheriff’s office routinely replaces vehicles every year utilizing an Equipment Replacement Plan Fund that is funded through their annual budget which the county commission approves. &nbsp;The approved 2025 budget included the replacement of the vehicles. &nbsp;

The recommended budget includes $228,000 for the purchase of four patrol vehicles. The agenda packet shows that the vehicles will be Dodge Durango vehicles. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The request from the sheriff’s office is for $200,100.12 for the purchase of the vehicles from Superior Emergency Response Vehicles. &nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (Hutch Post) — The Hutchinson City Commission will meet on Tuesday evening.&nbsp;

During the meeting the commission will consider an ordinance to authorize the reconstruction of 30th Avenue between Main Street and Adams Street.&nbsp;

The reconstruction project entails asphalt milling, paving, waterline replacement, clearing and grubbing, seeding and utility adjustments.&nbsp; This particular project was included in the 2023 budget at the cost of $1,200,000.&nbsp; If the ordinance passes, the City of Hutchinson will issue general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $925,000.&nbsp;
