GREAT BEND, Kan. — Libero Addy Foster had 16 digs to become the Hutchinson Community College volleyball program’s new freshman record holder for digs, but the Blue Dragons fell to the No. 8 Barton Cougars in a Jayhawk Conference match.

The Cougars had 11 service aces and rolled to a sweep of the Blue Dragons, 25-12, 25-23, 25-13 Wednesday at the Barton Gym.

The Blue Dragons dropped to 19-19 overall and 7-8 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson will close out the 2024 regular season on Saturday at Colby in a 2 p.m. match at the Colby Event Center. First-place Barton improved to 27-2 overall and 14-1 in the KJCCC.

With her first dig of the match, Foster broke the Blue Dragon freshman record for digs – formerly held by McKenzie Steele (2014) and Alissa Bautista (2019) with her 592nd dig this season.

Finishing with a team-high 16 digs, her 34th match with double-figure digs this season, Foster became the fourth Blue Dragon team program history to surpass 600 digs for a season. With 604 digs, Foster is fourth on the single-season digs list.

Atlyn Proctor and Tiana Simmons had 10 kills each to lead the Blue Dragons, who hit .080 in the match.

Proctor hit .150 on 40 attacks with three digs. Simmons hit .108 with seven digs and three block assists.

Middles Precious Johnson and McKenzie Murphy were next with three and two kills, respectively.

The Blue Dragons out-blocked Barton 6-1 with Murphy leading with four block assists.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson had 16 assists and nine digs.

Kassidy Nixon had 13 kills for Barton, which hit .200 for the match. Anna Wierzbicki had five service aces and Mina Kaneko had three aces.

🏐 Dragons fall in 3 to No. 8 Barton

Mandy Lynn Buckwalter, 43, of Wichita, died October 28, 2024, as the result of a car accident. &nbsp;She was born September 5, 1981, in Hutchinson, to David Wayne and Gale Lynn (Smith) Buckwalter.

Mandy graduated from Buhler High School in 2000, attended Hutchinson Community College, and graduated from Kansas University with a major in anthropology and minor in psychology. &nbsp;For over three years, Mandy worked with autistic children at Heartspring, in Wichita, as a home assistant supervisor in their therapeutic school. &nbsp;She was adventurous, independent, humble, and beautiful, both inside and out. &nbsp;In her short 43 years, Mandy lived life to its fullest as a world traveler, visiting various countries, many times for pleasure, but also to teach students how to speak English, which she did in both China and South Korea. &nbsp;In addition, Mandy traveled to numerous places of interest throughout the United States. As a life-long learner, before traveling or embarking on a new job or adventure, Mandy would read multiple books and articles, to be sure she knew as much as she could about her next endeavor. &nbsp;Mandy was a gifted listener, but when she spoke everyone listened as she was a book of knowledge. &nbsp;Mandy left an imprint on everyone she met, and will be missed immensely. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Mandy is survived by: &nbsp;her mother, Gale Buckwalter (Alan Janzen); father, David Buckwalter (Kelly); brothers, Brandon Buckwalter, Bryan Buckwalter, Christian Buckwalter, all of Hutchinson, Clancy Janzen (Jacque) of Salina, and Jeremy Janzen of Newton; sisters, Angela Arnold (Jason) of Hutchinson, Helena Klassen (Mitch) of Inman and Hope Mitchell of Hutchinson; grandmothers, Beverly Smith of Hutchinson and Beverly Willems of Newton; nieces, Madison and Mackenzie Buckwalter of Hutchinson; her cousin, Jody Redinger (who was more like a sister) of Hutchinson; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by: &nbsp;her paternal grandparents, Allan and Betty Buckwalter; grandfather, Fay Smith; and uncle, Troy Smith.

Celebration of Life service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 4, 2024, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Quintin Moore officiating. &nbsp;Friends may sign her book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

Offensive Player of the Week (Tiana Simmons – Hutchinson) –&nbsp;Redshirt freshman right-side hitter Tiana Simmons had a big week in a 5-1 stretch of games for the Blue Dragons. For the week, over 20 sets played, Simmons hit .313 and averaged 3.85 kills per set. She had two double doubles with 18 kills and 11 digs vs. the McPherson JV and 10 kills and 10 digs vs. Pratt. Simmons averaged 2.45 digs and 0.85 blocks per set last week.

Setter of the Week (Elena Stankovic - Barton) –&nbsp;Barton sophomore setter Elena Stankovic had a pair of double-doubles while leading the No. 8 Cougars to a 2-0 week. Playing in 8 sets, Stankovic keyed Barton's 6-2 offense, averaging 5.75 assists per set while contributing on the defensive end with 2.75 digs per set. The freshman libero capped her week with a career-high 28 digs on a .958 service receive, with one service ace in the 3-1 win over Garden City.

COLBY, Kan. – For the first time this season, both Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division 1 Women’s Soccer Players of the Week are repeat winners with Hutchinson’s Haley Rogers and Kansas City Kansas goalkeeper Maria Heuman each earning their second award of the season to conclude the regular season. &nbsp;

Haley Rogers (Hutchinson)&nbsp;– Haley Rogers had a four-point game with a goal and two assists in number 16 Hutchinson's 3-3 tie with number 19 Cowley last Saturday to conclude the regular season. Rogers' performance helped the Blue Dragons clinch third place in the KJCCC final standings as the sophomore now has team highs of 13 goals and 35 points to go with nine assists.

Maria Heuman (KCKCC)&nbsp;– Maria Heuman saw 11 shots this past week and let in just one against number 19 Cowley as part of a 3-1 road win over the Tigers. The Green Ridge, Missouri native currently leads the conference with seven solo shutouts and three shared shutouts for the 13-0-5 Blue Devils. Heuman is a huge part of&nbsp;why the Blue Devils boast a .50 GAA and have given up just nine goals in their 18 games and clinched a share of the KJCCC regular season title.

⚽ HutchCC's Rogers named KJCCC DI POW

Hutchinson High School graduate Brett Ballard is in his eighth season as the head coach of the Washburn University men's basketball team, as his Ichabods team prepares for an exhibition game at No. 1 Kansas on Tuesday evening.

The game will tipoff at 7 p.m. inside of Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence and will be streamed on <a href="https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/f0af1dee-169b-43ec-acaf-4cc4e13b1d2b">ESPN+</a>.

Ballard is a 1998 graduate of Hutchinson High School. He then played one season at Cowley College and one at HutchCC, where he graduated in 2000. Ballard then played his final two seasons at Kansas under Roy Williams.

He got his coaching career started at Kansas, as a volunteer assistant under Bill Self in the 2003-04 season, the first year under Self.

"He was terrific," Kansas head coach Bill Self said. "He was probably as good and responsible of an assistant as we've had. So, I want to see him do well, not at the expense of us, but hopefully it's a fun game for him and for us.

Ballard got his first head coaching job at Baker University, where he coached the Wildcats to a 33-30 record over a two-year span from 2010-12.

After leaving Baker, Ballard joined the coaching staff at Tulsa from 2012-14 and then at Wake Forest from 2014-17, all under former Jayhawk standout, Danny Manning.

Ballard was named the head coach at Washburn in April, 2017, replacing Hall of Fame inductee, Bob Chipman, who had led the Ichabods the previous 38 years.&nbsp;

Ballard is 137-75 in his eighth season as the Ichabods' head coach and 170-105 overall in his 10th year as a head coach. He has led the Ichabods to four NCAA postseason appearances in seven seasons at Washburn.

The Ichabods were picked <a href="https://wusports.com/news/2024/10/8/mens-basketball-ichabod-mens-hoops-squad-picked-by-coaches-as-team-to-beat.aspx">first in the MIAA preseason poll</a>.&nbsp;

Kelly will be joined by Ashley All, "Vote No" Spokesperson, and Rebecca Yoder-Shetler, founder of Kansas Women for Kamala Harris for the Kansas Women Vote Rally. Everyone is welcome.

Doors open at 4:00 p.m. and the rally begins at 5:00 p.m. at Hutchinson Community College's Stringer Fine Arts Center, 600 E 11th Ave. in Hutchinson. 

Light refreshments and a social hour will follow.

Governor to speak at Hutchinson rally Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Riding an unbeaten streak of eight games to close the regular season, the No. 14-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team is the No. 3 seed for the 2024 Region 6 Tournament, which begins this weekend at home sites.

The Blue Dragons (9-2-6) will play host to sixth-seeded Dodge City (4-9-4) at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

Hutchinson qualifies for its 20th-straight Region 6 Tournament. The Blue Dragons are 23-19 all-time in the Region VI Tournament, including 14-5 in the opening round. The Dragons are 10-2 in opening-round home games.

This will be only the second all-time postseason meeting between Hutchinson and Dodge City. The only other time the Blue Dragons and Conquistadors meet in the Region 6 Tournament was an opening-round game in 2011, a 13-0 Hutchinson victory.

The Blue Dragons swept the 2024 season series with Dodge City. Hutchinson defeated Dodge City 3-0 on September 4 in Dodge City. The Dragons claimed a 2-0 win over the Conquistadors on October 5 in Hutchinson.

The Hutchinson-Dodge City winner will play the Butler-Seward County winner on Thursday, November 5 at the highest-remaining seed.

The only other time the Blue Dragons and Conquistadors meet in the Region 6 Tournament was an opening-round game in 2011, a 13-0 Hutchinson victory.The Blue Dragons swept the 2024 season series with Dodge City. Hutchinson defeated Dodge City 3-0 on September 4 in Dodge City. The Dragons claimed a 2-0 win over the Conquistadors on October 5 in Hutchinson.The Hutchinson-Dodge City winner will play the Butler-Seward County winner on Thursday, November 5 at the highest-remaining seed.

⚽ HutchCC moves up to No. 14 in latest poll

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team closed out its 2024 home season in style for the Blue Dragons’ four sophomores on Saturday night.

The Blue Dragons hit .294 and help the Pratt Beavers to .000 hitting in a dominant 25-14, 25-10, 25-14 KJCCC victory in the final home match for sophomores Shelbi Wilson, McKenzie Murphy, Precious Johnson and Ryleigh Stuhlsatz.

The Blue Dragons are 19-18 overall and 7-7 in the KJCCC with two road games remaining at No. 8 Barton on Wednesday and No. 7 Colby next Saturday.

The Blue Dragons were led by redshirt freshman Tiana Simmons, who had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Simmons hit .347 on 23 attacks and she added three block assists.

Freshman Atlyn Proctor tied for match-high honors with 10 kills on .333 hitting. Proctor had two block assists.

Sophomore Precious Johnson had six kills and freshman Kierny Follmer had four kills.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson finished with 28 assists and five digs.

The Blue Dragons had 11 team blocks, led by sophomore McKenzie Murphy with a career-high 10 total blocks.

The Dragons also had nine service aces led by Ellie Suber’s five aces and two aces each from Johnson and Beatriz Carvalho.

Freshman libero Addy Foster finished with 16 digs.

Set 1: The Dragons got off to a slow start falling behind 7-2 in the opening set, which prompted an early timeout. Hutchison got the offense rolling by countering Pratt’s start with a 10-1 run. The Dragons took an 8-7 lead on a Simmons kill. Murphy’s kill on a slide attack capped that initial surge for a 12-8 lead. A 5-0 run with two Carvalho aces upped the lead to 17-9. Simmons closed a four-kill, one-block performance in the first with a kill on set point for a 25-14 win.

Set 2: The Blue Dragons dominated the second set, opening with a 10-2 run on a Pricilla Raschen kill. Back-to-back double blocks from Simmons and Murphy and Follmer and Murphy gave the Dragons a 13-3 lead. Leading 19-10, the Dragons close out the set on a 6-0 Wilson service run. She had an ace while Johnson had a kill and block. The Dragons had four blocks in the second set.

Set 3: Pratt scored the first four points of the third set, followed by a Blue Dragon 4-0 run and another 4-0 Pratt run to five the Beavers an 8-4 lead. After that, the Dragons scored on 21 of the next 27 rallies to finish off the match. Tied at 11-11, the Dragons went on a 13-0 run on Suber’s serve. Suber had three aces in that run. Leading 24-14, freshman Angela Reupena’s sixth kill of the season came on match point.

🏐 Dragons sweep Pratt on Sophomore night

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team knew it needed a single point on Saturday to lock itself into a third-place finish in the Jayhawk Conference.

Led by Haley Rogers’ four-point game, the No. 16-ranked Blue Dragons got that point with a 3-3 tie against the No. 19-ranked Cowley Tigers on Sophomore Day at the Salthawk Complex.

The Blue Dragons finished the 2024 regular season with a 9-2-6 overall record and finished third in the KJCCC with 30 points (8-2-4). The Dragons finished one point ahead of Cowley for third. Hutchinson will now play host to a Region 6 Tournament at 2 p.m. next Sunday, November 3 at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. Official pairings will be released on Monday.

Hutchinson went 5-0-3 through the second half of the KJCCC season. The last loss the Dragons suffered was 3-0 at Cowley on September 25.

Rogers had a goal and two assists to lead the Blue Dragons offensively.

Tied at 2-2 at halftime, Rogers delivered a perfect corner kick that sophomore Kaitlyn Edwards headed into the upper right corner of the goal for a 3-2 Blue Dragon lead with 36:41 to play in the second half. The Blue Dragons were less than 2 minutes from a victory, but Cowley’s Hina Suzuki, the KJCCC’s second-leading goal scorer – scored her second goal of the game to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:23 to play in regulation time.

Sophomore Katharina Marx also scored for the Blue Dragons, while Nancy Stefanek scored an assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Karsyn Slothower had her fourth career game of 10 or more saves with 10 saves against the Tigers. She now has 162 career saves, which is second-most in team history.

Suzuki had two goals and an assists to lead the Tigers, who out-shot the Blue Dragons 24-14. Tiger goalkeeper Marin Peoples finished with four assists.

The Blue Dragons scored the first goal of the game when Rogers took a throw-in from Stefanek and lobbed a shot over the top of Peoples for a 1-0 Hutchison lead 10:42 into the game.

A little less than 3 minutes later, Marx and Rogers weaved their way through the Cowley defense and ended up with a 2-on-1 vs. Peoples. Rogers slid a perfect pass to her right and Marx smashed it into the goal for a 2-0 lead with 31:38 remaining in the first half.

Cowley didn’t take long to tie the game. Suzuki scored her first goal of the game in the 17th minute to cut the Dragon lead to 2-1. Anna Linzler scored 2 minutes, 46 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2 with 25:39 to play in the opening half.

The Blue Dragons are now 14-6-2 against Cowley.

GAME NOTES – Katharina Marx now has 22 career goals, 21 career assists and 65 career points. She is tied with Nicole Randall (2009-10) for 17th on the Blue Dragon career points list. She is tied for 17th with Kayla Delzer (2006-07) and Esther Karhayu (2019-2020/21) in career goals scored and is tied for 13th in career assists with Madison Joyce (2010-11), Johanna Adolfs (2006-07) and Marah Franke (2019/2020/21).

The six ties extend the current Blue Dragon single-season record for ties. 

Haley Rogers had 13 goals, nine assists and 35 points this season.

Kaitlyn Edwards has nine goals, four assists and 22 points this season.

⚽ Dragons tie Cowley to secure third place in KJCCC

WINFIELD, Kan. —&nbsp;Running the same Kansas Veterans Home course where she shattered the Blue Dragon women’s 5K record time two weeks ago, Hutchinson Community College freshman Faith Jepchirchir became the third Hutchinson runner in program history to win the Region 6 individual championship.

Jepchirchir paced the No. 6-ranked Blue Dragon women to a Region 6 Championship runner-up team finish and a Jayhawk West championship on Friday.

The Blue Dragons were edged for the regional team championship by one point – 69-70 – by Butler. Dodge City was third with 73 points and Cloud County was fourth with 76 points. This was Hutchinson’s second-straight Region 6 runner-up finish.

The Blue Dragons won their third Jayhawk West championship, the first since 2020, with 52 points, edging Dodge City by two points and Cloud County by four points.

Jepchirchir joined Ruth Limo (2001) and Louise Cocking (2021) as Blue Dragon runners to win the Region 6 individual championship. Jepchirchir broke Serenity Larson’s 2022 Region 6 record time at 5,000 meters with a time of 17:08.43 on Friday.

This is Jepchirchir’s third event championship of the season, also winning the Terry Masterson Classic and the Region 6 Preview two weeks ago at the Kansas Veterans Home course.

Sophomore Jordyn Picolet continued her impressive sophomore season with a sixth-place Region VI finish and fifth-place KJCCC finish. Picolet improved her personal-best time to 17:48.80, which remains third fastest at 5,000 meters in Blue Dragon history.

Sophomore Abigail Grantham moved up to 11th place on the Blue Dragon all-time 5K list with a time of 19:06.76. Grantham placed 16th in the region and 13th in the Jayhawk West.

Freshman Ava Lemaster posted a PR time of 20:04.37 to place 27th in the region and 20th in the conference.

Sophomore Laura Avila was 31st in the region and 22nd in the conference with a time of 20:22.56.

Freshman Rio Kerven was 41st in the region and 27th in the conference with a time of 21:10.35.

The Blue Dragons now have had eight-straight Top 5 Region 6 team finishes and seven-consecutive Top 5 placings in the Jayhawk West.

Hutchinson next competes in the NJCAA Division I Cross Country championships on November 9 in Richmond, Virginia.

👟 Jepchirchir wins region; Dragons league champs

WINFIELD, Kan. —&nbsp;The cross country course at the Kansas Veterans Home must agree with the Hutchinson Community College men’s cross country team.

Two weeks after Titus Kiprotich set an 8,000 individual school record on the very same course, Dennis Cheruiyot beat that mark and paced No. 5-ranked Hutchinson to a Region 6 Championship team title on Friday.

The Blue Dragons swept both Region 6 and Jayhawk West team championships in dominant fashion with four runners placing in the Top 10 and six placing in the Top 20.

Hutchinson won the Region 6 title with 35 points. Runner-up Butler scored 57 and Fort Hays Tech Northwest was third with 84 points. The Blue Dragons won the Jayhawk West title with 25 points. Fort Hays Tech Northwest was second with 61 points and Garden City was third with 76 points.

This was the Hutchinson men’s eighth all-time Region 6 team championship and first since 2018. The Dragons captured their third Jayhawk West title in team history.

Cheruiyot, a freshman, became the new Blue Dragon individual record holder at 8,000 meters with a Region 6 runner-up finish and Jayhawk West title performance with a time of 23:46.77.

Freshman Cornelius Kogo was right on the heels of Cheruiyot, placing third in the region and second in the conference with a time of 23:50.50, the third-fastest 8K time in Blue Dragon history.

Kiprotich placed fifth in the region and fourth in the Jayhawk West with a time of 23:58.94. He ran a school-record of 23:49.64 two weeks ago at the Region 6 Preview to break the Blue Dragon 8K record.

Freshman Farrin Mangelson was the fourth Blue Dragon to place in the Top 10 with the 12th-fastest 8K time in Blue Dragon history of 24.49.77. Mangelson was seventh in the Jayhawk West.

Freshman Thaddeus Rotich was 15th in the region and 11th in the conference with a time of 25:12.86, which was the 19th-fastest time in team history.

Freshman Kaden Lohrentz was the sixth Blue Dragon inside the Top 20 with a 19th-place Region 6 finish and 14th-place in the Jayhawk West with a personal-best time of 25:12.86.

Sophomore David Ultreras was 31st in the region and 21st in the league with a time of 26:24.53. Sophomore Leo LeGrand was 36th and 24th, respectively, with a time of 26:30.29. Freshman Blake Yoder was 40th in the region and 27th in the league with a time of 27:13.81. 

The Blue Dragons will next compete in the NJCAA Division I Championships on November 9 in Richmond, Virginia.

Runner-up Butler scored 57 and Fort Hays Tech Northwest was third with 84 points. The Blue Dragons won the Jayhawk West title with 25 points. Fort Hays Tech Northwest was second with 61 points and Garden City was third with 76 points.This was the Hutchinson men’s eighth all-time Region 6 team championship and first since 2018. The Dragons captured their third Jayhawk West title in team history.Cheruiyot, a freshman, became the new Blue Dragon individual record holder at 8,000 meters with a Region 6 runner-up finish and Jayhawk West title performance with a time of 23:46.77.Freshman Cornelius Kogo was right on the heels of Cheruiyot, placing third in the region and second in the conference with a time of 23:50.50, the third-fastest 8K time in Blue Dragon history.Kiprotich placed fifth in the region and fourth in the Jayhawk West with a time of 23:58.94. He ran a school-record of 23:49.64 two weeks ago at the Region 6 Preview to break the Blue Dragon 8K record.Freshman Farrin Mangelson was the fourth Blue Dragon to place in the Top 10 with the 12th-fastest 8K time in Blue Dragon history of 24.49.77. Mangelson was seventh in the Jayhawk West.Freshman Thaddeus Rotich was 15th in the region and 11th in the conference with a time of 25:12.86, which was the 19th-fastest time in team history.Freshman Kaden Lohrentz was the sixth Blue Dragon inside the Top 20 with a 19th-place Region 6 finish and 14th-place in the Jayhawk West with a personal-best time of 25:12.86.Sophomore David Ultreras was 31st in the region and 21st in the league with a time of 26:24.53. Sophomore Leo LeGrand was 36th and 24th, respectively, with a time of 26:30.29. Freshman Blake Yoder was 40th in the region and 27th in the league with a time of 27:13.81. The Blue Dragons will next compete in the NJCAA Division I Championships on November 9 in Richmond, Virginia.

👟 Blue Dragon men win region title

NEWTON, Kan. — With a strong wind blowing a complete 180-degrees difference from Thursday’s opening rounds, the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team completed a wire-to-wire finish to win the NJCAA National Preview by 20 strokes on Friday at Sand Creek Station.

Led by Preview individual champion Charlie Box, the Blue Dragons posted a final-round 297 on Friday to win its second tournament of the fall season with a 54-hole total of 885.

The Blue Dragons won its second NJCAA National Preview in team history. The last time Hutchinson won the National Preview was in Fall 2022 in Lubbock, Texas when the Blue Dragons won that tournament by a record 45 strokes and Ben Partridge was individual champion.

The NJCAA National Preview is an opportunity for NJCAA Division I teams to play the same course that will host the NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships next May.

No. 7-ranked Western Texas was the team runner-up at the 2024 National Preview with a 905 team total after a final-round 298. No. 8 McLennan and Garden City tied for third at 909 and No. 3-ranked Odessa was fifth at 913 after shooting the low team score of the final round of 294.

Thursday’s rounds were played with a strong south wind. That wind turned around to the north and temperatures were much colder at tee time on Friday with temperatures in the mid-50s after a high of 92 on Thursday.

After blistering Sand Creek Station on Thursday to the tune of 7-under par 137 through two rounds, Box shot an even-par 72 to win the individual title at 7-under 209. Box defeated tournament runner-up Adam Bresnu of Odessa by eight strokes. Bresnu carded a 69 on Friday.

This is Box’s second tournament victory of the fall. He won the Sam Proal Classic in the season opener in September and finished with three Top three finishes in five fall tournaments.

Freshman Jaydon Carruthers tied for third on Friday at 3-over 219. Carruthers closed with a 3-over 75 after shooting back-to-back rounds of 72 on Thursday.

Sophomore Louis Ross posted a 1-over 73 and finished 11th at 226. Sophomore David Razinskas shot 78 on Friday and tied for 25th at 232. Freshman Jack Northgraves had a 77 on Friday and placed 39th with a 54-hole total of 236.

Blue Dragon individual Tyler Walker closed with a 76 on Friday and tied for 25th at 232. Individual player Cal Schultz was 62nd at 248 after a final-round 85.

The Blue Dragons complete the fall portion of the season with two team titles, a tie for second at the Bent Tree Intercollegiate and seventh- and eighth- place finishes in two NCAA Division I Tournaments this season.

⛳  Dragons go wire to wire to win NJCAA National Preview

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team hit a conference season-high .344 on Friday night to complete a match and season sweep of the Seward County Saints at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Spurred on by an 11-1 run to close the opening set, the Blue Dragons went on for a 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 victory over the Saints.

The Blue Dragons got back to .500 at 18-18 and are now tied for fifth at 6-7 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson closes out its regular-season home schedule with a 6 p.m. home match on Saturday against Pratt at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons will celebrate Sophomore Night activities before the game.

With the first set tied at 14-all, the Blue Dragons went on a 10-1 scoring run to close out the set and set the tone for the match.

Freshman Atlyn Proctor hit .421 and had a team-high 10 kills on 19 attacks.

Freshman Tiana Simmons had nine kills and hit .200. Simmons added 11 digs and five blocks.

Sophomore McKenzie Murphy hit a season-high 632 on nine kills, no errors and 13 assists.

Sophomore Precious Johnson finished with seven kills on .357 hitting. Johnson had five block assists.

Freshman Kierny Follmer had six kills on .300 hitting.

The Blue Dragons out-hit the Saints .344-.139. The Dragons out-blocked the Saints 10-4, out-dug the Saints 45-33 and had eight service aces to Seward’s four.

Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson finished with 41 assists, three digs and two ace serves.

Freshman libero Addy Foster had a match-high 17 digs. Freshman libero Beatriz Carvalho had a match-high five service aces and four digs.

The Hutchinson Community College football team take on its fifth nationally ranked opponent of the 2024 season on Saturday as the Blue Dragons return to Gowans Stadium from a two-game road trip.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons (7-0, 3-0 KJCCC) plays host to No. 13 Butler (3-3, 2-1) at Noon Saturday at Gowans Stadium for 2024 Fall Homecoming and the opening of a two-game homestand.

Hutchinson's Drew Dallas will become the sixth head coach in Blue Dragon Football history to coach 50 games. Dallas has amassed a 45-4 overall record in his fifth season with the Blue Dragons.

Dallas will tie Dave Wheeler (1999-2004) for the fifth-most games coached in team history on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons look to keep pace in the Jayhawk Conference with No. 5 Garden City. The Broncbusters are 4-0 in conference play and 6-1 overall. Garden City plays Iowa Western on Saturday in Garden City.

Hutchinson extended its Jayhawk Conference winning streak to 22 games with a 40-17 road victory at No. 12 Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragon defense forced five takeaways, including two interceptions from freshman defensive back&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/collier_kollin_in9z">Kollin Collier</a>. Back-up quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/johnson_christian_xik2">Christian Johnson</a>&nbsp;completed 13 of 20 passes for a season-high 228 yards and a touchdown and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/jordan_jr._waymond_h58l">Waymond Jordan Jr.</a>&nbsp;had his fifth 100-yard rushing game with 116 yards and three touchdowns to extend Hutchinson's road win streak to 18 games.

Butler suffered a 21-10 home loss to No. 5 Garden City last weekend in El Dorado.

The Grizzlies were out-gained 395-217 and were held to nine first downs by the Broncbusters. Running back Markellus Bass rushed for 103 yards and 13 carries to pace the Grizzly offense. Garden City led Butler 14-10 at halftime and scored the only points of the second half with a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Saturday's meeting is the 101st all-time meeting between Hutchinson and Butler. The Dragons lead the overall series 50-49-1 with wins in the last three meetings, including a 43-16 victory last season at BG Products Stadium in El Dorado.

Saturday's game features the Nos. 1 and 3 scoring offenses in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons rank first at 48.9 points per game, while the Grizzlies are third at 28.3 points per game. The Grizzlies are No. 3 in scoring defense at 14.4 points per game. The Blue Dragons are fourth in scoring defense at 17.4 points per game allowed.

The Blue Dragons are off next Saturday and will play Highland on No. 9.
