ANDOVER, Kan. — Caiden Beavers drove in four runs on three hits as Hutchinson rolled past Andover Central 19-6 on Thursday, plating nine runs in the fifth inning to break the game wide open.

Beavers doubled home two runs in the first inning and later added a two-run single in the fifth to lead the Salthawks, who pounded out 17 hits and stole five bases in the run-rule victory. Cole Bleything went 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs, while Carter Morgan had three hits and drove in four, including a three-run triple in the fifth.

Hutchinson jumped ahead 6-1 after the first inning, sparked by Beavers' double, a fielder’s choice by JuJu Lyons, a two-base error, and back-to-back RBI doubles from Bleything and Landon Parks.

Morgan’s RBI single in the third stretched the lead to 7-4, and Hutchinson erupted in the fifth with six hits and nine runs — including a sacrifice fly by Lyons, an RBI single from Bleything, a bases-loaded walk by Parks, Morgan’s triple, and a run-scoring double by Jack Yoder.

Jack Davis picked up the win, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits and six walks, striking out one. Bleything came on in relief to finish the fifth.

Maddox Archibald went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Jaguars (4-8), who have now dropped three straight. Carter Inslee added two hits and Brody DeGarmo walked twice.

⚾ Salthawks score season-high 19 runs in rout of Jaguars 

WICHITA, Kan. — The National Baseball Congress (NBC) announced Thursday that the championship game of the 2025 NBC World Series will return to downtown Wichita.

During a press conference at Equity Bank Park, NBC World Series tournament director Katie Woods revealed that the title game will be played at the downtown ballpark—home of the Wichita Wind Surge—on Saturday, Aug. 2.

“Today, I’m thrilled to announce that championship night of the 2025 NBC World Series powered by Evergy will return to downtown Wichita and be played right here at Equity Bank Park,” Woods said.

The rest of the 91st NBC World Series will take place July 24 through Aug. 1 at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.

“This is more than just a change of venue,” Woods said. “It’s a homecoming—a return to the heart of Wichita, where the NBC World Series was played for over 80 years at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. That stadium was built for this tournament, and its spirit lives on in every pitch, every memory and every fan who has cheered along the way.”

2025 Graduates

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson YMCA has reason to celebrate following the annual Greater Wichita YMCA celebration held in Andover, where Brad Dillon was named the 2024 Greater Wichita YMCA Volunteer of the Year.

Dillon, who has been instrumental in leading Hutchinson’s capital campaign, was recognized not only by the local branch but selected as the top volunteer among all 11 branches that make up the Greater Wichita YMCA association. That network includes locations in Wichita, Andover, Newton, El Dorado, and Hutchinson.

“Brad has been giving his time, talent, and treasure to make our Y and our community better,” said the Hutchinson branch director. “His leadership of our capital campaign has been wildly successful, and this award is a great recognition of his dedication.”

This marks the second time in three years the Hutchinson branch has brought home the prestigious honor. Will Lewis received the award in 2022, shortly after the Hutchinson YMCA officially joined the Greater Wichita YMCA system that same year.

“Since becoming part of the Greater Wichita YMCA in 2022, we’ve been fortunate to be recognized twice,” the director said. “It’s a nice feather in our cap and speaks to the strength and support of our volunteers and community.”

Joining the Greater Wichita YMCA has brought numerous benefits to the Hutchinson branch, including access to shared services, program support, and regular collaboration across the region. Branch directors meet weekly, while program directors and staff attend monthly cabinet meetings to exchange ideas and improve programming.

“That’s been one of the greatest parts of becoming part of a larger organization,” the director said. “We now have a network of people to connect with, and a wealth of policies, procedures, and best practices to help us better serve our communities.”

The recent excitement surrounding Hutchinson’s YMCA expansion and programming has not only energized local members but drawn attention and admiration from across the Greater Wichita region.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East 5th and North Poplar.

In the fall of 1872, the Rev. F.P. Swenbergh organized the first Catholic congregation. Father Swenbergh lived in Newton and came over on weekdays to say Mass.

In 1882, the first Catholic church was built on the southwest corner of 2nd and Maple. The Rev. Paul Ponziglioni was the first pastor. The first photo shows that building.

The church was moved to 201 E. 5th in 1897.

The Rev. William Farrell came in July 1908 and brought about the construction of the present church building. Construction started in 1910 and was dedicated May 1911. The second photo shows the construction crew with the church coming up in the background.

The old wooden church was sold to the Calvary United Brethren and moved to 502 W. Ave A. The third photo shows the St. Teresa's "Cathedral" in all its glory in 1916.

The fourth photo shows the original altar installed in 1917.

In later years, the parish added schools, rectories, nuns' homes and a family center.  The fifth photo shows the St. Teresa's Catholic Church today, still going strong after 114 years.

The National Weather Service office in Wichita has issued a Red Flag Warning for Thursday afternoon and evening. &nbsp;

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Extreme Grassland Fire Danger...is forecast. Winds...Southwest 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Relative Humidity...As low as around 10 percent.Impacts...Any fires that develop will have the potential to   spread rapidly.

Red Flag Warning issued for Thursday 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Ryan Chambers may spend his weekdays working as an engineer in Great Bend, but come the weekend, he’s saddling up for a high-speed, adrenaline-pumping sport that’s anything but ordinary.

Chambers, originally from Pretty Prairie and a Hutchinson Community College and Kansas State University alum, competes in cowboy mounted shooting — a sport that combines horseback riding with live-fire marksmanship. Riders maneuver their horses through a timed course, shooting at balloon targets with replica 1800s-era single-action revolvers.

“It’s kind of like barrel racing, but with guns,” Chambers explained with a grin. “You want to be fast, but you also need to be accurate. Every missed balloon adds five seconds to your time.”

Chambers first tried his hand at the sport after graduating from K-State, following in the footsteps of his younger brother, Tyler, who’s already earned a world championship title. Ryan’s debut came at the Kansas State Fair, where he placed dead last — even behind a 12-year-old competitor. But he stuck with it, eventually becoming a two-time Men’s High Point Champion in Kansas.

“You just keep working at it,” he said. “It’s humbling, but fun.”

His interest in statistics also ties back to family. Chambers’ grandparents, Neil and Ardith Thompson, were long-time statisticians for Hutchinson Community College starting in 1979. Chambers followed suit, helping with stats while a student and continuing to assist at Blue Dragon games and national tournaments to this day. He also works with the sports information department at K-State, where he covers home football games and other athletic events.

Balancing his engineering job with his passion for mounted shooting — not to mention bowling — takes planning. But with a homemade arena on family property, Chambers and his brother find time to train regularly.

“The horse has to be in shape, just like the rider,” Chambers said. “And they have to be used to the sound of gunfire. That takes time and the right kind of horse.”

The revolvers used in competition are .45 Colt single-action pistols, replicas of 1890s-era firearms. There are also divisions that include shotguns and lever-action rifles. The primary division, however, remains the pistol class — open to competitors of all ages, including an 86-year-old rider who competed in Las Vegas recently.

Chambers helps run a club based in Great Bend, which draws shooters from across Kansas — from Fowler to Topeka and Oakley to Wichita. Organizing events can be a challenge, but the community it fosters makes the effort worth it.

“We just pick a date and hope the weather cooperates,” he said.

The Kansas state shoot is scheduled for April 18–20 in Topeka, with other major events planned for Dodge City Days and the Kansas State Fair. On the national scale, Chambers has his eye on the upcoming CMSA (Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association) national shoot in Lincoln, Nebraska, scheduled around Memorial Day weekend.

“Some people golf, some bowl — I ride a horse and shoot balloons,” Chambers laughed. “It’s definitely a conversation starter.”

With a supportive community, a strong family legacy in stats, and a passion for a sport most have never heard of, Ryan Chambers continues to leave his mark — both in the saddle and behind the scorer’s table.

Engineer by day, cowboy by weekend: Ryan Chambers competes in the fast-paced world of mounted shooting

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Excitement continues to grow around the new YMCA facility under construction on North Lorraine Street, as branch director David Foster shared updates this week on progress, upcoming programs, and recent honors within the Greater Hutchinson YMCA.

“Things are moving right along,” Foster said. “We’ve already dug the lap pool and will be digging the family pool in the coming days. Concrete for the pool walls and footings for the building will go in soon, and before long, it’ll start taking real shape.”

Though fenced off, updates are available via the YMCA’s Facebook series “Behind the Fence,” which gives viewers a glimpse of construction activity that’s otherwise out of public view.

The project represents more than just a new building—it’s a symbol of growth and expanding opportunity for local families. “We’re excited about what’s to come,” Foster said.

Youth Sports and Summer Activities

With warmer weather on the way, the YMCA is gearing up for a busy summer of youth sports. T-ball and machine pitch baseball registration is open until May 5, serving children ages 3 to 9. Dodgeball registration runs through May 30 for students in grades 1 through 8.

“These are fun, active programs,” Foster said. “We expect a few hundred kids to participate again this summer, and it’s a great way to keep them engaged once school is out.”

The cost is $25 for YMCA members and $45 for non-members.

Another returning favorite is Saturday Night at the Y, a free program for all middle school students in Hutchinson and Reno County. The next event is set for May 10 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees can swim, play basketball, work out, and enjoy games, plus pizza and drinks before heading home.

“We’ve had over 350 students participate so far this year,” said Foster. “It’s a safe, fun way for them to stay active and social.”

The event will move to Salt City Splash for the summer months, in partnership with Hutch Rec.

Swim Lessons, Gymnastics and Academy Programs

As temperatures rise, many families are thinking about water safety—and the YMCA has them covered with year-round swim lessons in its current facility at 716 E. 13th Ave., near Hutchinson High School.

“People forget we have a pool now, not just the new one being built,” Foster noted. “We offer monthly swim lessons, gymnastics, and intermediate Academy levels that help prepare kids for team participation.”

Team opportunities are also available for those looking for more intensive instruction and competitions in both swimming and gymnastics.

The Hutchinson YMCA was recently recognized at the Greater Wichita YMCA’s annual celebration in Andover, where Brad Dillon was named the 2024 Volunteer of the Year. Dillon, who has chaired Hutchinson’s capital campaign, was selected among 11 nominees across the association.

“It’s a big honor,” said Foster. “Brad has been instrumental in our success, and it’s exciting to see him recognized.”

This marks the second time Hutchinson has received the award since joining the Greater Wichita YMCA network in 2022. Will Lewis was honored in 2023.

Brandon McVay, a multi-sport coach at the YMCA, was also named Hutchinson’s 2024 Volunteer Coach of the Year for his commitment to youth development through sportsmanship and mentorship.

Though the new facility is bringing major improvements, including a steam room, sauna and hot tub, Foster acknowledged some challenges in the current building. The 50-year-old steam room recently became inoperable, and due to high replacement costs, won’t be repaired before the move.

“We appreciate everyone’s understanding,” Foster said. “We’re investing in a much better experience with the new Y.”

Foster also teased future plans to expand NJCAA tournament team involvement at the YMCA following positive outreach from Monroe College and the NJCAA president.

“We’re proud to provide opportunities for visiting teams to connect with local youth,” he said. “And next year, we’re hoping to get every team involved.”

With new facilities on the horizon, packed youth programs, and strong community support, Foster said it best: “It’s a great time to be part of the Y.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man was taken into custody Tuesday following a domestic disturbance that escalated into a multi-agency standoff involving local law enforcement and a SWAT team.

At about 4:15 p.m. on April 15, officers with the Hutchinson Police Department, along with personnel from several Reno County law enforcement agencies, responded to reports of a domestic disturbance involving an armed suspect near 17th Avenue and Plum Street.

Upon arrival, officers located a female victim at the Kwik Shop convenience store. She was evaluated at the scene by Reno County EMS and later transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. Her condition was not immediately released.

Other officers responded to a nearby residence where the suspect was believed to be located. A perimeter was established, and officers attempted to make contact with the suspect but received no response. The Reno County SWAT team was then called in and made repeated efforts to communicate with the individual.

After multiple failed attempts to contact the suspect, SWAT officers entered the home and arrested Damon M. Cantu, 23, of Hutchinson. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Cantu faces numerous charges, including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery by strangulation, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threat, felony interference with law enforcement, endangerment, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.

Authorities expressed appreciation to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, South Hutchinson Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and Reno County EMS for their assistance.

Armed suspect taken into custody after standoff in Hutchinson

MAIZE, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School baseball team earned a split on the road at 5A No. 5 Maize South, falling in the first game, 8-2, before bouncing back for a 13-10 win in the finale.

The Salthawks are now 7-5 overall and will travel to Andover Central on Thursday for a single game at 4 p.m., while the Mavericks drop to 9-4 and will host Valley Center next Tuesday.

Game 1 — Maize South 8, Hutchinson 2

A five-run sixth inning proved to be the difference Tuesday as Maize South pulled away for an 8-2 win over Hutchinson.

Hutchinson struck first in the top of the first when Jack Yoder drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Salthawks a 1-0 lead. Maize South responded in the bottom half, taking a 2-1 lead on a bases-loaded walk to Cy Stucky and a run-scoring double play off the bat of Tanner Herrington.

The Mavericks broke the game open in the sixth, scoring five runs on seven hits. Brody Epke doubled in a run, Connor Mucciaccio added an RBI single, and Tate McNew delivered a two-run triple. Kade Cary capped the inning with an RBI groundout to push the lead to 7-1.

Keegan McLachlan picked up the win for Maize South, allowing four hits and one run over 5 1/3 innings while striking out three. Hutchinson starter Gabe Valadez took the loss, giving up six runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts in five innings.

Carter Morgan led Hutchinson at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Yoder swiped two bases, and the Salthawks turned a double play defensively.

Maize South tallied 10 hits, led by Mucciaccio’s 3-for-3 performance and two RBIs. McNew also drove in two runs and finished with a triple. Kallen Scott added two hits for the Mavericks.

Hutchinson stormed back from an early four-run deficit to outslug Maize South 13-10 in a high-scoring contest Tuesday evening.

The Salthawks racked up 13 hits and swiped 14 bases in the win, overcoming a 6-2 hole after two innings. Hutchinson tied the game in the third behind RBI hits from Gabe Valadez and Brodie McCuan, along with a sacrifice fly from Cole Bleything and a run-scoring lineout by Jack Davis.

Maize South briefly regained the lead in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Brody Epke, but Hutchinson flipped the script with a seven-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from JuJu Lyons. The Salthawks collected six hits in the frame and took a 13-7 lead.

Carter Morgan picked up the win for Hutchinson, allowing 10 runs—only three earned—over six innings with two strikeouts and three walks. Bleything earned the save. Maize South starter Cole Haynes went two innings, giving up two runs on four hits.

Caiden Beavers led Hutchinson at the plate, going 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot. Landon Parks drove in two runs, while Yoder and Morgan each recorded multiple hits. Yoder, Lyons, and Valadez each stole multiple bases in the Salthawks’ aggressive effort on the basepaths.

⚾ Hutch High explodes for 13 runs in Game 2 to earn split at 5A No. 5 Maize South

NICKERSON, Kan. — The USD 309 Board of Education approved the hiring of Terence Williams as the next head boys basketball coach at Nickerson High School during its regular meeting Monday evening.

Williams, a Dodge City High School graduate, brings a diverse background of playing and coaching experience. He played collegiately at Allen County Community College and Oklahoma Panhandle State University, then spent time overseas at the EuroProBasket International Academy in Spain before returning to the U.S. to begin his coaching and teaching career.

For the past five years, Williams has served as an assistant coach at Dodge City High School. He is also the founder of LV8Hoops, an AAU program focused on player development and mentoring youth through basketball.

“We hired Terence Williams because of his passion to develop student-athletes, as well as build a competitive and winning program,” said Devin Maxwell, who will take over as Nickerson’s athletic director at the end of the school year. “We think he will make great connections with the students and will be a great leader for our basketball program.”

Maxwell said Williams brings “a lot of knowledge, energy and passion to make everyone around him better.”

The Hutchinson Fire Department rescued two people from an afternoon house fire on Monday. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In a media release, the fire department said that they responded to a house fire in the 600 block of North Plum Street shortly before 12:30 p.m. &nbsp;While they were enroute to the fire dispatch notified responding units that there were two people trapped on the second floor of the residence. &nbsp;

Initial units on the scene found heavy smoke coming out of the residence and two female victims self-evacuating out of windows on the second story.&nbsp; One of the victims was rescued via a ground ladder and the second via a fire apparatus.&nbsp; The victims were transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Due to the conditions, a request was made to bring all available fire units to the scene. Two cats were later found while searching the residence and treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. They were taken by animal control for observation. &nbsp;

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Hutchinson Fire Department Fire Marshals Office &nbsp;

HFD rescues 2 from house fire on Monday afternoon 

ANDOVER, Kan. — Hesston earned a top-three team finish and placed two golfers in the top 10 during Monday’s Andover Central Invitational at Terradyne Country Club.

The Swathers carded a 323 to finish third in the 11-team field. Grant Waterson and Eli Frantz each shot 77 to tie for eighth individually, while Carter Frey added an 83 and Austin Penner posted an 86.

Buhler placed eighth with a team score of 334, led by Zach Chance’s 76 — which tied for sixth overall. Drew DeMeyer followed with a 79 to finish just outside the top 10, and Nick Chance added an 85. James Dingler and Brennan Geilenfeldt rounded out Buhler’s scoring with rounds of 94 and 97, respectively.

Andover captured the team title with a 299, paced by four players in the top five. Colt Farrow of Andover Central was the individual medalist with a 72. Andover Central finished second at 312.

Nickerson finished 10th with a 436, led by Addrick Nelson’s 96. Sedgwick followed in 12th at 437, with Keighan Earles carding a 100 to pace the Cardinals. Inman placed 14th with a 477, with Creighton Fries posting the team’s low round at 98.
