The department will work closely with each club moving forward to facilitate the financial support to the Ahearn Fund as well as the K-State Alumni Association's funding and awarding of local scholarships.&nbsp; "The history of our Catbacker Clubs and the support they provide is very unique to college athletics and a benefit that we do not take for granted," Athletics Director&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/staff-directory/gene-taylor/1" rel="smarttag" rev="1">Gene Taylor</a></dfn>&nbsp;said. "Talking internally and with our Catbacker Club leaders, we looked at factors such as the recruiting calendars, transfer portal dates, finals calendar for our student-athletes, and the recent overall attendance trends at some of our summer stops, and determined that adjustments are best as we move forward. But, I do want to be clear that the Catbacker Clubs are not going away, and their support and interaction with our coaches and student-athletes will remain. It will just be done more on a case-by-case basis with each club." WASHINGTON (AP) — The fatal shooting of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-embassy-jewish-museum-shooting-9e77d16a88d634b0dde5b2455c96dddf">two staff members of the Israeli Embassy in Washington</a>&nbsp;outside a Jewish museum was being investigated Thursday as an act of targeted violence, federal authorities said, as investigators prepared criminal charges against the suspect, who police say yelled&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war">“Free, free Palestine” following his arrest</a>.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-embassy-washington-jewish-museum-shooting-photos-9bb0f101b642c6b74ee24c08001878b3">The stunning attack</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday evening prompted Israeli missions to beef up security and lower their flags to half-staff. It came as Israel has launched another major offensive in the Gaza Strip in a war with the Hamas militant group that has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-embassy-washington-jewish-museum-shooting-0dd228eaea670cd06416b9a777912748">heightened tensions across the Middle East and internationally</a>&nbsp;and that law enforcement officials have repeatedly warned could inspire violence in the U.S.

The victims, identified as Yaron Lischinsky, an Israeli citizen, and Sarah Milgrim, an American, were a young couple about to be engaged, according to Yechiel Leiter, the Israeli ambassador to the U.S. He said Lischinsky had purchased a ring this week with the intent to propose next week in Jerusalem.

The couple were leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum when the suspect, who had been seen pacing outside the museum, approached a group of four people and opened fire, Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/mayor-attorney-general-condemn-deadly-shooting-incident-outside-jewish-museum-in-washington-dc-32607e74992e4bbba64e83e683c13699">at a news conference.</a>

The gunman, identified by police as 31-year-old Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, then walked into the museum, was detained by security guards and began chanting, “Free, free Palestine,” Smith said.

“These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW!” President Donald Trump posted on social media early Thursday. “Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA."

Israeli Prime Minister&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/benjamin-netanyahu">Benjamin Netanyahu</a>&nbsp;’s office said he was shocked.

“We are witnessing the terrible price of antisemitism and wild incitement against Israel,” he said in a statement.

The investigation unfolded in Washington, where federal investigators interviewed the suspect overnight and prosecutors prepared to bring criminal charges, and in Chicago, where heavily armed law enforcement officers arrived early Thursday at a home listed as the suspect's address.

FBI Director Kash Patel called the killings an “act of terror” and an example of targeted antisemitic violence.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said authorities were working to corroborate unspecified “writings allegedly authored" by Rodriguez. That was likely a reference to a document circulating online in which he expresses anger over Israel's conduct in the war in Gaza, which was ignited by Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack that killed 1,200 people and resulted in the abduction of some 250 hostages.

In the time since, Israel’s devastating campaign in Gaza has killed more than 53,000 people, mostly women and children, according to local health authorities, whose count doesn’t differentiate between combatants and civilians. The fighting has displaced 90% of the territory’s roughly 2 million population,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-hamas-war-news-hostages-05-21-2025-11444e8b684b983dbb64daa5854b7b14">sparked a hunger crisis</a>&nbsp;and obliterated vast swaths of Gaza’s urban landscape.

It was not immediately clear whether Rodriguez had an attorney who could comment on his behalf. A telephone number listed in public records rang unanswered.

Milgrim, from Overland Park, Kansas, was described by AJC chief executive Ted Deutch as “warm and compassionate, committed to peace building and passionate about sustainability and people-to-people relations.” Deutch said Lischinsky was a staff member of the embassy’s political department who told others at the event that he was eager to return to Israel to celebrate the Shavuot holiday with his family.

“Sarah and Yaron were stolen from us,” he said. “Moments before they were murdered, they were smiling, laughing and enjoying an event with colleagues and friends. We are in shock and heartbroken as we attempt to process this immense tragedy.”

Yoni Kalin and Katie Kalisher were inside the museum when they heard gunshots, and a man came inside looking distressed. Kalin said people came to his aid and brought him water, thinking he needed help, without realizing he was the suspect. When police arrived, he pulled out a red keffiyeh, the Palestinian headscarf, and repeatedly yelled, “Free Palestine,’” Kalin said.

“This event was about humanitarian aid,” Kalin said. “How can we actually help both the people in Gaza and the people in Israel? How can we bring together Muslims and Jews and Christians to work together to actually help innocent people? And then here he is just murdering two people in cold blood.”

Last week, the Capital Jewish Museum was one of the local nonprofits in Washington awarded funding from a $500,000 grant program to increase its security. The museum’s leaders&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/antisemitism-united-states-jews-donald-trump-2c2db56fd4d994cbabfde037cb107af8">were concerned because it is a Jewish organization</a>&nbsp;and due to its new LGBTQ exhibit, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/capital-jewish-museum-receives-dc-grant-amid-security-concerns-for-lgbtq-exhibit/3918302/?_osource=SocialFlowTwt_DCBrand">NBC4 Washington</a>.

“We recognize that there are threats associated with this as well,” Executive Director Beatrice Gurwitz told the TV station. “And again, we want to ensure that our space is as welcoming and secure for everybody who comes here while we are exploring these stories.”

In response to the shooting, the museum said in a statement that it was “deeply saddened and horrified by the senseless violence.”

Israeli diplomats have a history of being targeted by violence, both by state-backed assailants and Palestinian militants over the decades of the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict that grew out of the founding of Israel in 1948.

The Palestinians seek Gaza and the West Bank for a future state, with east Jerusalem as its capital — lands Israel captured in the 1967 war. However, the peace process between the sides has been stalled for years.

Kan. lawmakers issue statements on death of two Israeli embassy staff

Health officials are asking people who went to last week's Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium to monitor for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-texas-vaccination-us-rfk-mmr-8fb86f56b0892408680daae4a52047e6">measles symptoms</a>&nbsp;because a person went to see the singer while infectious.

There is no confirmed outbreak in New Jersey, but the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-texas-vaccination-us-rfk-mmr-8fb86f56b0892408680daae4a52047e6">U.S. and North America are seeing high measles activity this year</a>&nbsp;— including hundreds sickened by the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mexico-measles-vaccines-misinformation-mmr-mennonites-misinformation-ea6158b9a4d513b20f33cbc09034e5c2">highly infectious airborne virus</a>&nbsp;in West Texas — and declining rates of people getting the vaccine, which is 97% effective after two doses.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-outbreak-texas-day-care-lubbock-3d90c3ea9050c12dbc74a8f8142a6355">Schools and daycares</a>&nbsp;are among the most common places for measles exposures, like one that happened in three western North Dakota public schools in early May that led to all unvaccinated students being held at home for 21 days under state law.

The Kansas Department of Health reported two new cases in the state this week in Haskell County.&nbsp; The total of 58 cases are in 10 counties.

Here’s what to know about the measles and how to protect yourself.

What's happening with measles in the U.S.?

Most U.S. children get vaccinated against measles before entering public school, but increasing numbers of people skipping shots for religious or personal reasons have fueled outbreaks in the U.S. and abroad this year.

Overall, the U.S. has seen more than 1,000 measles cases across 30 states since the beginning of the year, and 11 states with outbreaks — defined as three or more related cases. The largest outbreak in the U.S. has been in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-outbreak-texas-rfk-vaccines-8cf4641b04731c713edb524ca943490c">Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma</a>. There are also large outbreaks in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-texas-mexico-canada-ontario-0956a30c043b030ae79bc9f67c6ce89c">Mexico and Canada</a>.

It's a respiratory disease caused by one of the world’s most contagious viruses. The virus is airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. It most commonly affects kids.

“On average, one infected person may infect about 15 other people,” said Scott Weaver, a center of excellence director for the Global Virus Network, an international coalition. “There’s only a few viruses that even come close to that.”

Measles first infects the respiratory tract, then spreads throughout the body, causing a high fever, runny nose, cough, red, watery eyes and a rash.

The rash generally appears three to five days after the first symptoms, beginning as flat red spots on the face and then spreading downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs and feet. When the rash appears, the fever may spike over 104 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the CDC.

There’s no specific treatment for measles, so doctors generally try to alleviate symptoms, prevent complications and keep patients comfortable.

People who have had measles once can’t get it again, health officials say.

It usually doesn’t kill people, but it can.

Common complications include ear infections and diarrhea. But about 1 in 5 unvaccinated Americans who get measles are hospitalized, the CDC said. Pregnant women who haven’t gotten the vaccine may give birth prematurely or have a low-birthweight baby.

Among children with measles, about 1 in every 20 develops pneumonia, the CDC said, and about one in every 1,000 suffers swelling of the brain called encephalitis — which can lead to convulsions, deafness or intellectual disability.

“Children develop the most severe illness," said Weaver, who works at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. "The cause of death in these kinds of cases is usually pneumonia and complications from pneumonia.”

The best way to avoid measles is to get the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vaccine-safety/vaccines/mmr.html">measles, mumps and rubella</a>&nbsp;(MMR) vaccine. The first shot is recommended for children between 12 and 15 months old and the second between 4 and 6 years old.

“Before a vaccine was developed in the 1960s, everybody got” measles, Weaver said. There is “great data” on the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, he said, because it's been around for decades.

“Any of these outbreaks we’re seeing can easily be prevented by increasing the rate of vaccination in the community,” he said. “If we can maintain 95% of people vaccinated, we’re not going to see this happening in the future. And we’ve slipped well below that level in many parts of the country.”

Vaccination rates have declined nationwide since the COVID-19 pandemic, and most states are below the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vaccinations-kindergarten-exemptions-cdc-1c0f9a196a70491fccf48b9125090de0">95% vaccination threshold for kindergartners</a>&nbsp;— the level needed to protect communities against measles outbreaks.

Do you need a booster if you got the MMR vaccine a while ago?

Not usually. People who are vaccinated are considered protected against measles for their lifetime.

Health care providers can test for antibodies and give boosters if needed.

Getting another MMR shot as an adult is harmless if there are concerns about waning immunity, the CDC says. The virus is airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. It most commonly affects kids.“On average, one infected person may infect about 15 other people,” said Scott Weaver, a center of excellence director for the Global Virus Network, an international coalition. “There’s only a few viruses that even come close to that.”Measles first infects the respiratory tract, then spreads throughout the body, causing a high fever, runny nose, cough, red, watery eyes and a rash.The rash generally appears three to five days after the first symptoms, beginning as flat red spots on the face and then spreading downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs and feet. When the rash appears, the fever may spike over 104 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the CDC.There’s no specific treatment for measles, so doctors generally try to alleviate symptoms, prevent complications and keep patients comfortable.People who have had measles once can’t get it again, health officials say.<h2>Can measles be fatal?</h2>It usually doesn’t kill people, but it can.Common complications include ear infections and diarrhea. But about 1 in 5 unvaccinated Americans who get measles are hospitalized, the CDC said. Pregnant women who haven’t gotten the vaccine may give birth prematurely or have a low-birthweight baby.Among children with measles, about 1 in every 20 develops pneumonia, the CDC said, and about one in every 1,000 suffers swelling of the brain called encephalitis — which can lead to convulsions, deafness or intellectual disability.“Children develop the most severe illness," said Weaver, who works at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. "The cause of death in these kinds of cases is usually pneumonia and complications from pneumonia.”<h2>How can you prevent measles?</h2>The best way to avoid measles is to get the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vaccine-safety/vaccines/mmr.html">measles, mumps and rubella</a>&nbsp;(MMR) vaccine. The first shot is recommended for children between 12 and 15 months old and the second between 4 and 6 years old.“Before a vaccine was developed in the 1960s, everybody got” measles, Weaver said. There is “great data” on the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine, he said, because it's been around for decades.“Any of these outbreaks we’re seeing can easily be prevented by increasing the rate of vaccination in the community,” he said. “If we can maintain 95% of people vaccinated, we’re not going to see this happening in the future. (AP) — The College Football Playoff will go to a more straightforward way of filling the bracket next season, placing teams strictly on where they are ranked instead of moving pieces around to reward conference champions.

Ten conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director came to the unanimous agreement they needed Thursday to shift the model that drew complaints last season.

The new format was widely expected after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-playoff-bracket-19ca5f1d2de4d1fb6b724880a2b4331e">last season’s jumbled bracket</a>&nbsp;gave byes to Big 12 champion Arizona State and Mountain West champion Boise State, even though those teams were ranked ninth and 12th by the playoff selection committee.

That system made the rankings and the seedings in the tournament two different things and resulted in some matchups — for instance, the quarterfinal between top-ranked Oregon and eventual national champion Ohio State — that came earlier than they otherwise might have.

“After evaluating the first year of the 12-team Playoff, the CFP Management Committee felt it was in the best interest of the game to make this adjustment,” said Rich Clark, executive director of the CFP.

The five highest-ranked champions will still be guaranteed spots in the playoff, meaning it’s possible there could be a repeat of last season, when CFP No. 16 Clemson was seeded 12th in the bracket after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey was among those who pushed for the change in the second year of the agreement, though he remained cautious about it being approved because of the unanimous vote needed.

Smaller conferences had a chance to use the seeding issue as leverage for the next set of negotiations, which will come after this season and could include an expansion to 14 teams and more guaranteed bids for certain leagues. The SEC and Big Ten will have the biggest say in those decisions.

As it stands, this will be the third different playoff system for college football in the span of three years. For the 10 years leading into last season’s inaugural 12-team playoff, the CFP was a four-team affair.

The news was first reported by ESPN, which last year signed a six-year, $7.8 billion deal to televise the expanded playoff.

It came as Israel has launched another major offensive in the Gaza Strip in a war with Hamas that has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-embassy-washington-jewish-museum-shooting-0dd228eaea670cd06416b9a777912748">heightened tensions across the Middle East and internationally</a>&nbsp;and as antisemitic acts are on the rise.

The two people killed, identified as Yaron Lischinsky, an Israeli citizen, and Sarah Milgrim, an American, were a young couple about to be engaged, according to Yechiel Leiter, the Israeli ambassador to the U.S.

Lischinsky told others at an event he attended before he was killed that he was looking forward to returning to Israel to celebrate an upcoming Jewish holiday, said Ted Deutch, the chief executive of the American Jewish Committee, which had put on the reception.

The gunman, identified by police as Elias Rodriguez, 31, of Chicago, then walked into the museum, was detained by event security and began chanting, “Free, free Palestine,” Smith said.

Israeli Prime Minister&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/benjamin-netanyahu">Benjamin Netanyahu</a>&nbsp;’s office said Thursday he was shocked.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, led by former judge Jeanine Pirro, will prosecute the case.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino wrote in a post on social media that “early indicators are that this is an act of targeted violence.”

The influential pan-Arab satellite channel Al Jazeera aired on a loop what appeared to be mobile phone footage of the gunman, wearing a suit jacket and slacks, being pulled away after the shooting, his hands behind his back.

The war, ignited by Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack that killed 1,200 people and resulted in the abduction of some 250 hostages, has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and displaced most of its population.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East Avenue F and South Elm.

Hadley Methodist Church was started as a mission in 1889 by the Rev. C.R. Thoburn. This mission was frequently called the Boot &amp; Shoe Sunday School. The first photo shows the chapel, completed in 1890, at 401 E. Ave. F.

The second photo shows the same structure in 1906.

This building was remodeled into the Hadley M.E. Church about 1910. The third photo shows the church in 1911.

The church was very active. It even had a church baseball team. The fourth photo shows that team in 1915.

The last church pastor was Marien Holbert in 1975 when it disbanded.

The building was later reborn as the Hadley Daycare Center, with Judith Teafol becoming its director.

In 1979, the daycare was moved to 330 Charles St. The building had one last revival in 1992 as the Hutchinson Community Ministries clothing center and social services.

It eventually became the private residence of William Brower. The fifth photo shows the structure in 2017 right before it was condemned and razed.

The sixth photo shows the vacant property today at 401 E. Ave. F, now owned by the Hutchinson Land Bank.

 </figure>The last church pastor was Marien Holbert in 1975 when it disbanded.The building was later reborn as the Hadley Daycare Center, with Judith Teafol becoming its director.In 1979, the daycare was moved to 330 Charles St. The building had one last revival in 1992 as the Hutchinson Community Ministries clothing center and social services.It eventually became the private residence of William Brower. The fifth photo shows the structure in 2017 right before it was condemned and razed.<figure>

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-embassy-jewish-museum-shooting-9e77d16a88d634b0dde5b2455c96dddf">Two staff members of the Israeli Embassy in Washington</a>&nbsp;were shot and killed Wednesday evening while leaving an event at a Jewish museum, and the suspect yelled,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war">“Free, free Palestine” after he was arrested</a>, police said.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar identified the victims as Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim. Lischinsky was a research assistant, and Milgrim organized visits and missions to Israel.

They were leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum when the suspect approached a group of four people and opened fire, Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/mayor-attorney-general-condemn-deadly-shooting-incident-outside-jewish-museum-in-washington-dc-32607e74992e4bbba64e83e683c13699">at a news conference.</a>

The suspect, identified as Elias Rodriguez, 31, of Chicago, was observed pacing outside the museum before the shooting, walked into the museum after the shooting and was detained by event security, Smith said.

When he was taken into custody, the suspect began chanting, “Free, free Palestine,” Smith said. She said law enforcement did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the community.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-embassy-washington-jewish-museum-shooting-photos-9bb0f101b642c6b74ee24c08001878b3">The stunning attack</a>&nbsp;prompted Israeli missions to beef up their security. The shooting comes as Israel has launched another major offensive in the Gaza Strip in a war with Hamas that has heightened tensions across the Middle East and internationally.

Israeli Prime Minister&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/benjamin-netanyahu">Benjamin Netanyahu</a>&nbsp;’s office said Thursday that he was “shocked” by the “horrific, antisemitic” shooting.

Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter said the two people killed were a young couple about to be engaged, saying the man had purchased a ring this week with the intent to propose next week in Jerusalem.

Former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Mike Herzog told Israeli Army Radio that the woman killed was an American employee of the embassy and the man was Israeli.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said she was at the scene with former judge Jeanine Pirro, who serves as the U.S. attorney in Washington and whose office would prosecute the case.

The statement from Netanyahu’s office said he spoke to Bondi, who told him Trump was “involved in managing the incident” and the U.S. would bring the perpetrator to justice.

Dan Bongino, deputy director of the FBI, wrote in a post on social media that “early indicators are that this is an act of targeted violence.”

The influential pan-Arab satellite channel Al Jazeera aired on a loop what appeared to be mobile phone footage of the alleged gunman, wearing a suit jacket and slacks, being pulled away after the shooting, his hands behind his back.

The war in the Gaza Strip began with the Palestinian militant group Hamas coming out of Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, to kill 1,200 people and take some 250 hostages back to the coastal enclave.

The violence occurred following the American Jewish Committee's annual Young Diplomats reception at the museum.

"This is a shocking act of violence and our community is holding each other tighter tonight," Ted Deutch, American Jewish Committee’s chief executive, said in a statement early Thursday. “At this painful moment, we mourn with the victims’ families, loved ones, and all of Israel. May their memories be for a blessing."

Yoni Kalin and Katie Kalisher were inside the museum when they heard gunshots and a man came inside looking distressed, they said. Kalin said people came to his aid and brought him water, thinking he needed help, without realizing he was the suspect. When police arrived, he pulled out a red keffiyeh and repeatedly yelled, “Free Palestine,’” Kalin said.

In response to the shooting, the museum said in a statement that they are “deeply saddened and horrified by the senseless violence outside the Museum this evening.”

The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington CEO Gil Preuss said in a statement that he was horrified by the shooting and mourned the loss of the two people killed.

“Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, and with all of those who are impacted by this tragic act of antisemitic violence,” he said.

Israeli diplomats in the past have been targeted by violence, both by state-backed assailants and Palestinian militants over the decades of the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict that grew out of the founding of Israel in 1948. The Palestinians seek Gaza and the West Bank for a future state, with east Jerusalem as its capital — lands Israel captured in the 1967 war. Terror in DC: Israeli Embassy staffers killed near Jewish museum

The Hutchinson YMCA branch is seeing exciting developments both on and off the construction site, as Branch Director David Foster shared in his monthly update on the BW Morning Show on Wednesday morning.

The new YMCA facility, currently under construction just south of 23rd and Lorraine, is making significant progress. "There's a lot of dirt and concrete work going on," Foster said. "As of last week, we had poured the equivalent of four football fields of concrete, and that number is still growing."

In addition to footings and pool excavation, the installation of light pole bases and preparation for the new parking lot are underway. Foster has been keeping the community updated through social media videos under the “Behind the Fence” series. Drone footage, including shots from local videographer Nick Hemphill, will eventually be compiled to document the project from start to finish.

But even as the new facility rises, the current location at 716 E. 13th Ave. remains a hub of activity with summer promotions and programming in full swing.

Summer Membership Deal and Sports Sign-Ups

A summer membership promotion is now active through June 3, waiving the $75 joiner fee. “It’s a great opportunity to get involved, especially for families looking for kids’ activities,” Foster said. “Believe it or not, June is typically a busier month for new memberships than even January.”

Council approves zoning change 

As the final school bells ring for students across Hutchinson’s USD 308, Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson says the work is far from over for district leaders. 

Dr. Johnson reflected on a year of academic achievement, successful graduations, and significant community engagement — while also looking ahead to major projects including a new childcare center and a substantial bond proposal that could transform local education infrastructure. 

Graduation, Promotions, and Student Success 

Hutchinson High School graduation was on Sunday, marking a milestone for approximately 300 seniors. Dr. Johnson praised the community for its respectful and celebratory support. “I've been to a lot of graduations, but ours really stand out for how respectful and meaningful they are,” she said. 

Highlighting academic achievement, Johnson noted that an overwhelming majority of graduates had already completed college-level or career and technical education (CTE) courses, many thanks to a strong partnership with Hutchinson Community College. “I was overwhelmed by how many students stood up when we asked who had taken a college course,” Johnson said. 

As the district celebrated seniors, it also recognized younger students transitioning between school levels — from Pre-K to kindergarten and sixth graders moving on to seventh grade — with eighth grade promotion happening on Thursday 

New Child Care Center: “Little Hawks” to Open in January 

One major development this year was the groundbreaking of the Little Hawks Early Learning Center, located near Morgan Elementary at 29th and Adams. The project aims to address a pressing community need: quality, affordable child care for working families. 

“This wouldn’t be possible without years of advocacy and community involvement,” said Johnson. “Thanks to grant funding through the Reno County Childcare Task Force, we’re able to lower the cost and make this accessible.” 

The center is currently accepting applications, which are evaluated based on family income and the age of the child due to its integration with the Head Start program. Parents can apply at <a href="http://usd308.com/earlychildhood">usd308.com/earlychildhood</a>.

Looking Ahead: $109 Million Bond Proposal on the Horizon 

As the district transitions into summer, planning takes center stage — particularly for a $109 million bond issue expected to go before voters in November 2025. 

According to Johnson and Director of Communications Stacy Goss, the bond was shaped by extensive community input gathered through more than 29 meetings held last spring. One of the clearest takeaways: a strong desire for a comprehensive middle school serving grades 6 through 8. 

Currently, students switch between different middle schools (HMS 7 and HMS 8), which many parents and educators say creates gaps in student-teacher relationships and disrupts social and academic continuity. 

Highlights of the bond proposal include: 

74% of funds dedicated to building a new, centralized 6–8 middle school on existing district land at 23rd and Severance. 

15% allocated for safety and security upgrades at the six elementary schools, including safe rooms. 

5% to repurpose HMS 8 for administration and student services. 

2% to relocate community athletics fields, baseball and soccer, currently at the middle school site. 

The district also plans to decommission and repurpose older buildings like Old Town and HMS 7, which could help offset maintenance and insurance costs, reducing the tax burden. 

“We’re trying to be smart and efficient,” Johnson said. “We already own the land. The community has told us the need is now — and we agree.” 

Military and Leadership Development Under Review 

During the conversation, Johnson also addressed inquiries about offering a Junior ROTC program. While previously explored, it was shelved due to staffing and curriculum overlap with existing leadership courses. However, renewed community interest could bring the idea back into focus. 

“JROTC isn’t about recruiting for the military — it’s about leadership, citizenship, and discipline,” Johnson said. “It could be a great opportunity if we can make it work.” 

Next Steps: Community Engagement This Fall 

As summer approaches, the district will shift into high gear to prepare next year’s budget and begin a second round of community engagement about the bond. 

Meetings and public forums will resume in September and October to ensure voters are informed ahead of the November election. 

“This is about setting our students and our city up for success in the long run,” Johnson concluded. “We’re grateful for our community’s involvement — and we’re excited for what’s ahead.”

Wendt's family said he died early Tuesday morning, peacefully in his sleep while at home, according to the publicity firm The Agency Group.

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” the family said in a statement. “He will be missed forever.” The family has requested privacy during this time.
