RENO COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
Reno County emergency crews are assessing widespread damage after a tornado tore through rural areas and the city of Plevna on Sunday, May 18, leaving downed trees, damaged homes, and snapped utility poles in its wake.
The tornado touched down around 11:50 p.m. north of Turon, cutting a destructive path through the countryside before striking Plevna. It then continued approximately five miles northeast of the city before dissipating.

No injuries or fatalities have been reported, and officials credit early warnings and residents’ quick response for the outcome.
“We are thankful the residents took shelter immediately when the tornado warnings were issued,” Reno County Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar said in a statement. “While the damage is extensive, we are relieved that no injuries or fatalities have been reported.”

Emergency responders, public works teams, and utility crews are actively working in the affected areas. Authorities are urging residents to avoid damaged zones to allow response teams to operate safely and efficiently. Only residents will be allowed entry into impacted areas.
Barricades have been set up across blocked or hazardous roads. Law enforcement officials warn drivers not to bypass barricades or attempt to drive through debris or over downed power lines.
“Turn around and call 911 if you encounter a roadway with a power line across it,” Weishaar's statement continued.

Residents are also encouraged to check on neighbors and report downed power lines or gas leaks immediately.
The Red Cross has set up an assistance center at the Abbyville Community Center to support those affected.
“We continue to be proud of the way our residents, volunteers, responders, public works, and utility crews all work together,” Weishaar said. “The community’s resilience and cooperation will ensure that Reno County recovers quickly.”
