The Hutchinson Art Fair, a long-standing tradition in the Kansas arts community, celebrated another successful year with strong turnout, enthusiastic community support, and a wide array of artistic talent on display.

Once held in venues like Avenue A Park, Memorial Hall, and even the parking lot of The Hutchinson News, the fair has evolved into a staple event backed by the Hutchinson Art Center's Board of Directors, staff, and a dedicated team of volunteers.

This year’s top honors went to Michael Schlyer, who received the first place award and a $500 prize. Dennis Flores, known for his Bison Bead Jewelry, took second place and $400, while Heike Kirk of Three Doors North earned third place and $300.

In addition to the main awards, several special honors were presented:

Awards of Merit, each accompanied by a $100 prize, were given to Elizabeth Yutzy (Little Arrows Pottery), Phyllis Provost-Saas, Jocelyn Woodson, and Kathie Moore (Dragonfly Studio).

Organizers have already set the date for next year’s fair: Saturday, May 9, 2026.

The art festivities continue through the summer at the Hutchinson Art Center. Programming includes the annual Kids Summer Art Camp and “Saturday Morning Artists,” open sessions for teens and adults interested in drawing and painting.

In the Main Gallery, visitors can experience People - Places - Photography, an exhibit featuring work by Chicago-based photographer Michael Bracey. The collection highlights scenes from Colombia, Ghana, and Liberia, accompanied by documentary film work from David and Bobby Obermite.

The Front Gallery hosts Flora &amp; Fauna: Selections from the Permanent Collection, the first permanent collection exhibition curated by the center’s new Executive Director. It showcases artworks reflecting the natural world.

Coming later this summer are two additional exhibitions: Figuratively Speaking, drawn from the center’s Permanent Collection and set to open in late June, followed by new works by artists Melinda McDaniel and Susan Meyer on display in July.

Hutchinson Art Center announces Art Fair winners

Fern Florence Moots, 92, of Hutchinson, died May 29, 2025, at Dove Estates in Goddard. She was born July 16, 1932, in Fowler, to Everett Michael and Dorothy S. (Fettis) Carr.

Fern graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1950. She was a Group Manager of Operator Service at Southwestern Bell Telephone/AT&amp;T for over 30 years, retiring in 1986. Fern loved spending time with her grandkids, playing cards and games, and enjoyed bowling. She was of the Christian faith.

On December 13, 1953, Fern married William K. “Bill” Moots, in Hutchinson. He died December 28, 1995.

She is survived by: her children, Loretta Horn (Larry) of Holland, MI, Kay McCurry of Wichita, Ray Moots of Haven; grandchildren, Justin McCurry (Erin) of Kansas City, KS, Christy Ewing (James) of Manassas, VA, Grady McCurry of Wichita, Lisa Jones (Ryan) of Byron Center, MI, Kami McGrew (Chris) of Mulvane, Kylee Solan (Brett) of Wichita, McKenzie Jeffrey (Shane) of Haven, Colton Moots (Nicole) of Haven; 11 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.

As Missouri lawmakers prepare to debate a counter offer to keep the teams, economists say Kansas’ proposal may not be financially feasible

Kansas is the only state or local government to pass a plan to fund a Kansas City Chiefs or Royals stadium project.

Dysfunction in the Missouri General Assembly might also mean the Show Me State has nothing to offer. A last-minute plan by Gov. Mike Kehoe to&nbsp;<a href="https://thebeaconnews.org/stories/2025/05/01/missouri-legislature-stalls-bill-state-stadium-funding/" target="_blank">help finance stadium projects for the Royals and Chiefs</a>&nbsp;derailed in the state Senate.

Missouri lawmakers return Monday for a special session to, among other things, pass a stadium proposal. But as it stands now, Kansas is in the driver’s seat to get, in theory, both the Royals and Chiefs. Notably, an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcur.org/sports/2025-05-29/kansas-city-royals-stadium-aspiria-overland-park" target="_blank">affiliate of the Royals recently purchased a mortgage</a>&nbsp;in Overland Park secured by the Aspiria campus, which is at 119th Street and Nall Avenue.

But economists say Kansas can’t afford both teams.

“You are not going to generate enough net revenue to cover one of the facilities, let alone two,” said Geoffrey Propheter, an associate professor of public finance at the University of Colorado Denver.

Propheter did say there’s a way Kansas could afford both stadiums, but that requires “cannibalizing activity from other businesses.”

A majority of Kansas lawmakers disagree, and say getting the Chiefs or Royals is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But whether STAR bonds can support one or two teams depends on who you ask.

<a href="https://www.kansascommerce.gov/program/community-programs/star-bonds/" target="_blank">STAR bonds</a>, or sales and tax revenue bonds, are bonds that are paid by taxes generated in a bond district — hence the name. In a stadium proposal, taxes collected from bars, restaurants or any other businesses in the bond district would pay back the debt. Typically, STAR bonds are paid off in 20 years.

“(Kansans are) not going to pay a dime unless they visit the district,” Rep. Sean Tarwater, a Stilwell Republican,&nbsp;<a href="https://thebeaconnews.org/stories/2024/06/18/kansas-star-bonds-chiefs-royals/" target="_blank">said last year</a>.

That’s the logic behind the state’s proposal. Lawmakers last year approved a plan that would authorize Kansas to finance up to 70% of stadium costs with the bonds.

Supporters say the Chiefs and Royals would spark an economic boom that will bring new dollars into Kansas. All that economic activity would literally and figuratively pay off in the long run.

Almost 80% of STAR bonds projects are on track to be paid off early, the Kansas Department of Commerce said in 2024. STAR bonds have been used to finance other sports stadiums like the Kansas Speedway and Sporting Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy Park.

But STAR bonds have never been used for projects of this magnitude. A Chiefs or Royals stadium would be by far the largest project in the program’s history. And previous STAR bonds have only funded at most 50% of construction costs, not 70%.

The Kansas Speedway’s original bond was $24.3 million for a stadium that opened in 2001. That’s equivalent to about a $47 million bond when adjusted for inflation. Children’s Mercy Park received a $150 million bond before its 2011 opening.

Those figures would only cover a small fraction of the construction for a new Chiefs or Royals stadium. New stadiums for the Texas Rangers, Las Vegas Raiders and the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers opened in 2020. They had $1.2 billion, $1.9 billion and $5.5 billion price tags, respectively.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li_2022/b2021_22/committees/ctte_h_cmrce_lbr_1/documents/testimony/20220118_01.pdf" target="_blank">2021 audit</a>&nbsp;from the Kansas Legislative Division of Post Audit found questionable returns from some STAR bonds. Notably, the Prairiefire project in Overland Park defaulted on its STAR bonds last year. Topeka Heartland Park and the Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kansas, also failed to pay back their bonds. And Strataca, the Hutchinson salt museum, is only projected to break even in 43 to 118 years.

Propheter, the University of Colorado Denver associate professor, knows a lot about stadium funding plans. He said they don’t always work as advertised.

He said risk is unavoidable with these types of projects and they never start off profitably. It takes years to build the stadium and the surrounding district. That’s years of debt not being paid back.

Propheter said most of the money generated from the stadiums won’t be new to the metropolitan area. The Royals aren’t going to bring in tens of thousands of out-of-town fans for a Tuesday night game. But they will bring out tens of thousands of people who would already be spending money locally. These fans are spending money at the stadium instead of at a movie theater, bowling alley, restaurant or other local business.

Kansas wants projects financed by STAR bonds to attract 30% of their visitors from 100 miles away and 20% from outside Kansas. The 2021 audit of STAR bonds found that only three of 16 projects — the Hutchinson salt museum, Topeka Heartland Park and Kansas Speedway — met both goals.

A Chiefs or Royals stadium would likely draw a fair share of out-of-state visitors because the teams have been based in Missouri for so long. But Propheter isn’t convinced the economic activity will be worth it.

“A lot more people would travel to Kansas,” he said. “Would it be enough to generate the money needed to pay the debt? No.”

Nathaniel Birkhead, associate professor of political science at Kansas State University, also is wary of sales and other tax dollars being used to pay off bonds.

He said STAR bonds have struggled to pay off up to 50% of project costs before. Now, these bonds could pay up to 70% of one or more billion-dollar projects. That’s concerning to Birkhead.

“There’s some logic behind the STAR bonds,” he said. “However, I still fundamentally think it’s dishonest to say that something will pay for itself.”

Birkhead said the Chiefs, for example, are guaranteed no more than nine regular season games. The teams also could host concerts or other events to keep their stadiums busy, but there is no guarantee that happens.

He wonders how busy the STAR bond district will look when a game is not being played that day.

Then there’s uncertain economic projections. Ongoing concern about inflation and uncertainty around federal tariffs could make construction more expensive. A possible recession also would prevent people from spending money on sports events.

Brian Mayes, a lead political strategist who also worked on the Vote Yes! Keep the Rangers campaign in Texas, said there was a point in his life where he might have agreed that stadium debt is hard to pay off. But Mayes, who has worked on the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers stadium funding, said new stadium development is just different. There’s just so much economic development around these stadiums, he said.

Mayes said Rangers and Cowboys games always keep the businesses around the stadiums busy. But so too do the concerts, conventions and other stadium offerings. The Cowboys offer tours of the locker rooms, and people show up.

That’s not to mention mega events like hosting a Super Bowl.

Mayes remembers when the Cowboys left Irving, Texas, for the new stadium in Arlington. The old site of the Cowboys stadium still sits undeveloped. Meanwhile, Arlington now has a booming tourism district that is helping pay off other government projects.

“(We said) put the Cowboys to work for Arlington,” he said. “It was the economic generator, and the additional tax revenue that was made by the Cowboys helped the city pay for roads and parks and police.”

Scott Sayers is a senior technical architect with Gensler Kansas City. Gensler has worked on dozens of sports projects, including the Rams Village in Los Angeles, Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., and M&amp;T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

Sayers said more people want to spend time before or after the game hanging around. Maybe they are talking about what they just saw or wanting to enhance the pregame experience.

Sayers doesn’t have specific opinions on STAR bonds and whether Kansas can afford one or two teams. But he does know that the Chiefs or Royals can create a prosperous stadium district if they work toward it — whether that would be in downtown Kansas City or suburban Kansas.

The state already did that when it created The Legends next to the Kansas Speedway and Children’s Mercy Park. Sayers said that area used to be an empty field before becoming a bustling, dense shopping and entertainment district.

The teams can build thriving entertainment districts when they treat the stadium and its surrounding areas as one cohesive community, he said.

“People have expectations,” Sayers said. “No longer are the days where 7:05, the event starts. I get dropped off at 6:40 … I want to start those experiences at 5 o’clock, at 4:30.”

Gensler has worked on dozens of sports projects, including the Rams Village in Los Angeles, Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., and M&amp;T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.Sayers said more people want to spend time before or after the game hanging around. Maybe they are talking about what they just saw or wanting to enhance the pregame experience.Sayers doesn’t have specific opinions on STAR bonds and whether Kansas can afford one or two teams. But he does know that the Chiefs or Royals can create a prosperous stadium district if they work toward it — whether that would be in downtown Kansas City or suburban Kansas.The state already did that when it created The Legends next to the Kansas Speedway and Children’s Mercy Park. Sayers said that area used to be an empty field before becoming a bustling, dense shopping and entertainment district.The teams can build thriving entertainment districts when they treat the stadium and its surrounding areas as one cohesive community, he said.“People have expectations,” Sayers said. “No longer are the days where 7:05, the event starts. &nbsp;A crowd of 2,700 racing fans packed the stands Friday night at SaltCity Racing for an action-packed evening of dirt track competition, highlighted by a thrilling win from Zach Blurton of Quinter, Kansas in the 360 Winged Sprint division.&nbsp;

Blurton outpaced a competitive field to take first place in the feature event, edging out Blake Hawn of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, who claimed second. Rounding out the top three was Sam Hafertepe Jr. of Sunnyvale, Texas.&nbsp;

In IMCA Stock Car action, it was Mike Petersillie of Hoisington, Kansas who took the checkered flag, with Hutchinson locals Scott Miller and Tanner Thiel finishing second and third respectively.&nbsp;

In Super Stock action&nbsp; Wichita's J.D. Eveland takes top honors, followed closely by Chris Eveland of Hutchinson. Jerrod Reimer, also of Hutchinson, secured a strong third-place finish.&nbsp;

Friday’s races delivered high-octane entertainment from start to finish, and fans can already look forward to the next round of racing scheduled for Friday, June 20. That night’s lineup will feature IMCA Stock Car, IMCA Modified, IMCA Hobby Stock, IMCA Northern SportMod, and the return of the United Rebel Late Model Series.&nbsp;

Glenys Irene Schneider, 96, died May 16, 2025, at Cedarhurst of Wichita. She was born December 8, 1928, at Grace Hospital, Hutchinson, to Robert Baker and Flora Maude (McAtee) McDill.

Glenys graduated from Nickerson High School in 1945 and attended Kansas State University. She was a bookkeeper for banks in Sterling and Independence, as well as helping to prepare tax forms. She also worked as a general office assistant at IMCO (Independent Manufacturing Company) in Neodesha, KS. Glenys loved to support 3 sons in their school activities, their sports events and all her grandsons in all their activities. She enjoyed watching the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. Glenys was able to go to many stadium tours across the country, seeing the “behind the scenes” for baseball and football. Glenys was an avid NCAA basketball viewer and attended many of the Junior College National Tournaments in Hutchinson. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hutchinson.

On January 2, 1949, she married Alvin Lee Schneider at the Midland Community Church in rural Rice County. They shared over 61 years of marriage, prior to his death on August 14, 2010.

Glenys is survived by: sons, Terry (Lisa) Schneider of Wichita, Roger (Debbie) Schneider of Rose Hill; grandsons, Jared (Kate) Schneider, Eric (Candice) Schneider; great-grandchildren, Story, Rose, and Hunter; step-grandchildren, Stacy (Ryan), Stephanie (Rich) and Trey; and Story Schneider and Rose Schneider, Hunter Schneider and eight step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, husband; son, Tom (1997); grandson, Travis Schneider (2020); and brother, Donald McDill.

Graveside service will be announced at a later date. Cremation has taken place.

Deborah A. “Deb” Benbrook, 67, of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born November 19, 1957, in Hutchinson to Glen and Shirley (Ray) Jenks. Deb was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose selfless spirit and generous heart touched everyone she met. She had a deep love for her family—always putting them first—and she found her greatest joy in the moments spent with her children and grandchildren.

Beautiful both inside and out, Deb dedicated her life to caring for others. For many years, she served the Nickerson School District as a beloved school bus driver. She took great pride in safely transporting generations of children, forming connections with families and becoming a fixture in the community.

On April 27, 2002, Deb married the love of her life, Howard “Sonny” Benbrook. Together they shared 23 cherished years filled with love, laughter, and unwavering partnership.

Deb is survived by her husband, Sonny Benbrook of Hutchinson; five children: Chris (Adriana) Armbruster of Haslet, TX; Bill (Samantha) Armbruster of San Antonio, TX; David “Bryce” Terry of Hutchinson; Mindy (AJ) Behrendt of Hutchinson; and Jamey (Abe) Taylor of Nickerson. She is also survived by her mother, Shirley Payne of Hutchinson; sisters: Susan Heath and Rina Borecky of Hutchinson, and Jackie Hicks of Kansas City, MO; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who will carry on her legacy of love.

As BW Radio celebrates its 90th anniversary, a familiar voice from the past returned to reflect on a storied broadcasting career that began right here in Hutchinson.

Gary Bender, a former sports director at BW Radio in 1964 and a nationally renowned sportscaster, took time to revisit the humble beginnings of a career that would eventually span decades and reach national television networks like CBS and ABC.

Bender, now retired and living in Arizona, was born in Norton, Kansas, and raised in Ulysses. The son of a coach at what was then Dodge City Junior College, Bender went on to play football at Wichita State University. An injury, however, ended his playing days and shifted his focus to broadcasting.

“It really started for me at the University of Kansas,” Bender said. “I was in graduate school, unsure of what to do, when my mentor Tom Hedrick — the voice of the Jayhawks — told me, ‘You’ve got to go for it.’ That changed everything.”

With Hedrick’s help, Bender secured his first job in Hutchinson at BW Radio. But the road to that opportunity wasn’t easy.

“I was broke, living in my aunt’s basement in Kansas City, and finishing my thesis,” Bender recalled. “Tom called and said there might be an opening in Hutchinson. I borrowed $30 from my aunt and drove down, only to be told by Fred Conger, the station owner, ‘I don’t need a sportscaster.’”

Fortunately for Bender, Conger changed his mind after learning that Bender’s wife was a teacher — and that he was also the president of the local school board.

“Just like that, I was hired,” Bender said. “It was a break I desperately needed.”

But the road to that opportunity wasn’t easy.“I was broke, living in my aunt’s basement in Kansas City, and finishing my thesis,” Bender recalled. “Tom called and said there might be an opening in Hutchinson. I borrowed $30 from my aunt and drove down, only to be told by Fred Conger, the station owner, ‘I don’t need a sportscaster.’”Fortunately for Bender, Conger changed his mind after learning that Bender’s wife was a teacher — and that he was also the president of the local school board.“Just like that, I was hired,” Bender said. “It was a break I desperately needed.”<figure>

Legendary broadcaster Gary Bender reflects on career roots in Hutchinson 

Phyllis Marie Howerton, 83, died April 6, 2025 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. &nbsp;The daughter of Irvin and Iantha Young, she was born on August 27, 1941 at the Kingman Hospital. &nbsp;

From the age of five, Phyllis was raised on the family farm southwest of Kingman. &nbsp;Phyllis attended elementary and middle school in Spivey, KS. &nbsp;At the age of 10, she became active in 4-H where she enjoyed projects including foods, clothing, pigs and chickens. &nbsp;Phyllis attended Kingman High School, where she met the love of her life, Dale Howerton, during her junior year. &nbsp;She graduated in 1959 and went on to study at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS. Phyllis graduated with a degree in Education, with an emphasis in Home Economics in 1963, later earning her master’s degree in Home Economics Education from Kansas State University. &nbsp;

In the summer of 1962, Phyllis and Dale were married and moved to Moline, KS. After graduation, Phyllis worked for the County Attorney before accepting a Middle School Home Economics teaching position. &nbsp;Two years later, they moved to Hutchinson, where they attended Park Place Christian Church and were both active members until late in their lives. &nbsp;In 1966, Phyllis was hired by the Reno County Extension Office as the Assistant Home Economics Agent and was quickly promoted to Extension Agent. &nbsp;She specialized in clothing and textiles, teaching many classes throughout the years. &nbsp;

In 1973, Dale and Phyllis welcomed their daughter, Erin, into the world. &nbsp;Erin meant the world to them both and they took great pride in watching her participate in several sports and activities.&nbsp;

&nbsp;During her career, Phyllis’ title evolved to Family and Consumer Science Agent (FACS). &nbsp;In this role, Phyllis specialized in clothing, foods, budgeting etc. &nbsp;She especially enjoyed teaching classes attended by young mothers helping them learn basic life skills, allowing them more independence and confidence. &nbsp;In 1997, Phyllis was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. &nbsp;After 36 years of service, Phyllis retired from Extension in December of 2002. &nbsp;During retirement, Phyllis enjoyed planting and growing beautiful flowers and being active in several church groups with some of her dearest friends. &nbsp;

Her granddaughters were one of her greatest joys! &nbsp;Spending time with them gave Phyllis a chance to share with them her knowledge of baking and sewing. &nbsp;She enjoyed doting on them and traveling with Dale when able. &nbsp;Some of their happiest times were, fall family trips to Colorado and summers at Big Cedar in Missouri. &nbsp;

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Erin (Dan) Rude and granddaughters Taia, Tenley and Lily, and sister-in-law, Phyllis Wohlford and her husband Dale. &nbsp;

She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers, Charles and Robert and sister-in-law Nancy, and brother-in-law, Orman and his wife Marie.&nbsp;

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday June 6, 2025, at Park Place Christian Church, 2600 N. Adams, Hutchinson, with Pastor Jerry Muncy officiating. &nbsp;Friends may sign her book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;

Rex Lee Roberts was born to Rex C. and Margaret A. (Foster) Roberts in rural Montgomery County, Kansas, on May 16, 1941.

On May 8, 2025, Rex passed away in his sleep while visiting his family in Saratoga Wyoming.

Rex leaves behind his wife, Kathyrn Roberts, of Hutchinson KS, three children, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren, two sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his sister, and his daughter-in-law.

Rex and Kathyrn were married December 28, 1960 at the Methodist Church in Elk City, Kansas, and enjoyed 64 years of marriage. They moved their family to Hutchinson Kansas in 1963, where Rex was employed by Cessna. Rex retired in 1999 from Eaton Corp after 33 years of service.

Rex played high school football for Independence High School, winning Conference and State Championships his Junior (1957) and Senior (1958) years. His team started a 49-game winning streak that spanned from 1957 to 1962. Rex loved the outdoors, fishing, camping, and hunting. In retirement he enjoyed striper fishing at Lake Texoma and trout fishing trips to Arkansas, Colorado, and Wyoming.

He always made time for family and friends, attending reunions and family events. Winters were spent in south Texas where he made new friends and enjoyed the warmer climate.

The family will hold a celebration of life on Saturday, 6/21/25, 10:00am at Saltcity Cowboy Church, 810 N. Main, South Hutchinson KS. Lunch will be provided following the services.

 A multi-day stretch of widespread precipitation from May 24 to 26 has brought much-needed drought relief to several areas across the Central Plains, leading to notable improvements in drought conditions, according to recent climate monitoring reports.

Rainfall totals ranged from 1 to 3 inches across large portions of southwestern South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and northeastern Colorado, with some localized areas receiving even more. This substantial precipitation, coupled with much cooler temperatures, played a key role in recharging topsoil moisture, offering a boost to regional agriculture and ecosystems.

The latest drought analysis shows a 1-category improvement across parts of southwestern South Dakota, western and central Nebraska, and northeastern Colorado. In these areas, indicators such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) at various time scales, along with soil moisture data, showed clear signs of recovery. As a result, areas classified under severe to extreme drought have seen a reduction in coverage.

Meanwhile, southeastern Colorado also experienced lighter rainfall. While totals were lower, multiple indicators including SPI, soil moisture, and the Vegetation Drought Response Index (VegDri) suggested enough improvement to remove the last remaining areas of moderate drought from the region.

However, not all areas benefited from the recent rainfall. Southern Nebraska and northern Kansas largely missed the precipitation, leading to small 1-category degradations in drought status. Western Colorado also saw conditions worsen, with 90- to 180-day SPI data supporting a 1-category downgrade due to increasing dryness over the past several months.

With the growing season underway, continued monitoring will be crucial to determine whether these improvements mark the beginning of a sustained trend or a temporary break in ongoing drought conditions.

The team reported Monday to begin preparations for the 2025 summer collegiate season, the Monarchs’ 17th year in the Salt City. The program has built a strong tradition, highlighted by its NBC World Series championship in 2023 under current manager Casey Lippoldt.

The Monarchs' 2025 schedule includes 33 dates, with 18 home games at Hobart-Detter. The full schedule is available online.

Hutchinson will host its annual Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday, June 14, against the Great Bend Bat Cats. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

A Vintage Baseball Game is scheduled for Saturday, June 28, at 5:15 p.m., ahead of the Monarchs’ matchup with the Derby Twins at 7 p.m.

Lippoldt enters his third season as Monarchs manager. Hutchinson native Ryan Stoecklein joins the staff this summer for his first season as an assistant coach.

⚾ Monarchs begin 17th season in Hutchinson Friday 

&nbsp; John “Kirk” Cottingham, 85, of Hutchinson, died May 19, 2025, at Pleasant Hills, Hutchinson. He was born July 21, 1939, in McPherson, to John and Vivian (Steeves) Cottingham.&nbsp;

Kirk graduated from Newton High School in 1957 and obtained his bachelor’s degree from University of Kansas in 1961. He was a financial advisor with A.G. Edwards before retiring in 2000. Kirk was a long-time member of Kiwanis Club of Downtown Hutchinson and an avid supporter and contributor of the Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson. He spent many hours on golf courses as it was his favorite hobby.&nbsp;

On November 14, 1998, he married Eileen Miller in Hutchinson. They shared 26 beautiful years together before his death.&nbsp;

Kirk is survived by: beloved wife, Eileen Cottingham; children, Jay (Sheri) Cottingham and Anna (Paul) Ondreika; grandchildren, Emma Cottingham, Alexandria and Sydney Ondreika; step-children, Dale (Tonya) Ferguson, Kevin Ferguson, Mike Ferguson, and Celia Ferguson; and six step-grandchildren.&nbsp;He was preceded in death by: his parents, and twin brother and sister-in-law, Kent and Judy Cottingham.&nbsp;

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Journey @ South Hutchinson. Family will receive friends 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2025, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel. Friends may sign his book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.&nbsp;

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Camp Hope, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.&nbsp; &nbsp;

TOPEKA — President Donald Trump appointed former Kansas Republican Rep. Patrick Penn, who resigned from his House seat earlier this month, as the deputy undersecretary for the department’s food, nutrition and consumer services.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, appointed by Trump in February, announced Penn’s new position&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usda.gov/about-usda/news/press-releases/2025/05/27/secretary-rollins-announces-new-slate-presidential-appointments-usda-food-and-nutrition-service-farm" target="_blank">Tuesday</a>, along with a slate of other state-level leadership designations.

“President Trump is putting Farmers First, and so is the incredible team we are building at the Department of Agriculture,” Rollins said in a press release. “Our latest additions to the USDA family are personally invested in ensuring farmers and rural America prosper.”

Penn resigned from the Wichita-area House seat he held since 2021 on&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/briefs/kansas-republican-state-rep-patrick-penn-of-wichita-plans-to-quit-house/">May 14</a>, submitting letters to Republican party and state officials. A special precinct election to select a representative to fill the vacant 85th district seat is set for Wednesday. Penn’s term was set to expire January 2027.

Penn is a former Army signal officer who was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was first elected to the Kansas Legislature in 2020, where he was dedicated to pushing Second Amendment legislation, including repeated attempts to pass a firearm education program bill.

The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service administers 16 food assistance programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as food stamps, and emergency food assistance.

Penn voted during the 2025 legislative session in favor of prohibiting SNAP beneficiaries from purchasing candy and soft drinks with their food assistance dollars. Also during the 2025 legislative session, Penn was involved in a handful of disruptive moments. In March, he&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/03/11/kansas-democrats-liken-bill-to-expand-inspector-generals-authority-to-ag-power-grab/">questioned a Democratic lawmaker’s motives</a>&nbsp;during debate on the House floor. Many people know about the classic children's book "The Little Engine That Could" but what about the "little station" that not only could but still can? Not many things born ninety years ago this month are still alive and kicking. A notable exception is a uniquely thriving Hutchinson AM radio station, KWBW.&nbsp;

Once housed in what is now the Reno County Museum and originally known as KWBG, then in a historic local library building at 5th and Main, followed by a long stint in the once suburbs of 17th and Harding and now in at 9th and Main, KWBW has become a local institution playing primarily to middle age and older adults. An FM component was added in 2013 to expand night-time coverage.&nbsp;

It is highly unusual for a low power radio station to survive nine decades of broadcasting and society ups and downs. Especially in recent decades many stations have sold, disappeared and changed formats.&nbsp;

Although it didn't start with a news/talk and sports format KWBW was a Kansas talk pioneer. It has become one of the communities strongest voices for local events and programs, sports and linked up with an on-line news service, Hutch Post, owned and operated by its' parent, Eagle Media out of Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;

The result has been a sizeable number of local listeners who depend on the station for community information, a chance to voice their own telephone comments weekly, high school and community college sports, local personalities that have become engrained in loyal listeners for generations and linking up with popular national programing such as Clay Travis and Buck Sexton (successors to Rush Limbaugh); conservative Glen Beck and longtime coverage of Kansas City Royals baseball.&nbsp;

KWBW has maintained its success through several innovative practices. These include home-spun, so-called ad-lib commercials by station personalities and remote broadcasts where announcers visit advertisers' businesses to deliver live reports. The station was also one of the first to invite clients in to record their own commercials. Additionally, a long-running show called Party Line allows people to advertise their buy-and-sell items for free over the phone. Together, these strategies have helped KWBW overcome competition and challenges that have caused other stations to go bankrupt or fade away.

 </figure>The late Fred Conger bought into the station and moved from Topeka more than a half century ago. Conger was willing to experiment with BW Radios' first talk program called Coffee and Conversation. It was only 15 minutes, originating live from the downtown Baker Hotel, now Plaza Towers apartments, and it featured Conger talking about Hutchinson and with its' interesting people. Conger went on to pioneer Party Line, a daily trade and sale program made famous by Wilma "Perky" Perks. For more than a quarter-century she enticed a huge audience both with sale items and appeals for listeners to help local organizations and needy people. <figure>

 </figure>Conger also launched a sister FM station, KHUT and later ownership further expanded with KHMY-FM.&nbsp;Without Congers' willingness to move toward a talk format when most stations were only playing music KWBW might not have made it through broadcast turbulence of the 60's and 70's. He also had the courage to be among the few, initially, to add Rush Limbaugh to BW programing. It became the nations' most popular daily radio show and Conger resisted local efforts from opponents to shut it down.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Another key part of the stations' success was Conger turning over ownership in 1989 to a group called Eagle Communications, headed by Hays radio and television owner Bob Schmidt and his principal operating lieutenant Gary Shorman. Schmidt and Shorman brought in needed new ideas, increased capital and challenged the station to embrace change. Worn out equipment was replaced, and a future vision was established. As Schmidt readied for retirement, he put all his stations and cable operations into an employee-owned environment known as ESOP. When cable assets were sold employee stockholders were handsomely rewarded, a huge benefit for long-term workers.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The move in 2007 to a closed but strategically located savings and loan office at 9th and Main put KWBW its sister stations back in the heart of Hutchinson, greatly enhancing visibility and taking the stations out of crowded, uninviting facilities.
