HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A free chance for you to try out the Y is coming on Tuesday.

"Tuesday, the 27th, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., we're having an open house," said David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA. "That's open to anyone in the community, as well as YMCA members, because a lot of times we realize, even our members, especially some that may have just joined recently aren't aware of all the great things that the Y has to offer, so it would be a great time to learn about all of our programs. We're kind of doing a group exercise sampler."

There will be four or five short sessions to give you a taste of what classes are like at the Y.

"Everybody can come and jump in and check those out, as well as visit with our program directors and find out all the great things that we have to offer."

The Hutchinson YMCA is at&nbsp;716 E 13th Ave. in Hutchinson.

Hutchinson Y holding free event Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Saturday afternoon just after 1 p.m. the Hutchinson Fire Department responded to the 200 block of West 28th for the report of a structure fire. 

First arriving units found a single-story home smoke pushing out of the front door. Dispatch reported to units that there was a possible occupant inside trying to get pets out. Crews operated in an offensive strategy stretching a hose line to the front door. The first arriving crew was able to hear the occupant inside the home and made entry to perform rescue. 

The occupant was removed from the home and checked by RCEMS. Crews started an aggressive attack in the kitchen area of the home. Crews extinguished the fire quickly and started overhaul to minimize losses within the property. Search crews cleared the home and rescued 4 cats. 

The Hutchinson Fire Department would like to remind everyone that while pets are very important to us, staying within the home or going back inside to save your pets is dangerous and greatly reduces/slows the efforts of fire extinguishment.

NEW YORK (AP) —The Federal Trade Commission sued to block a proposed merger between grocery giants Kroger and Albertsons, saying the $24.6 billion deal would eliminate competition and lead to higher prices for millions of Americans.

The FTC filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Oregon on Monday. It was joined in the suit by the attorneys general of eight states and the District of Columbia.

Kroger and Albertsons, two of the nation’s largest grocers,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-albertsons-companies-inc-0cfbd68f81ba8aab7c1d3012c69804d9">agreed to merge</a>&nbsp;in October 2022. The companies said a merger would help them better compete with Walmart, Amazon, Costco and other big rivals. Together, Kroger and Albertsons would control around 13% of the U.S. grocery market; Walmart controls 22%, according to J.P. Morgan analyst Ken Goldman.

Kroger, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, operates 2,750 stores in 35 states and the District of Columbia, including brands like Dillons, Ralphs, Smith’s and Harris Teeter. Albertsons, based in Boise, Idaho, operates 2,273 stores in 34 states, including brands like Safeway, Jewel Osco and Shaw’s. Together the companies employ around 700,000 people.

But the merger, announced at a time of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-consumers-price-gouging-spending-economy-999e81e2f869a0151e2ee6bbb63370af">high food-price inflation</a>, was bound to get tough regulatory scrutiny. U.S. prices for food eaten at home typically rise 2.5% per year, but in 2022 they rose 11.4% and in 2023 they rose another 5%, according to government data. Inflation&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-prices-rates-economy-biden-federal-reserve-539b662f32a3cea4a514407ae4389174">is cooling</a>, but gradually.

“Kroger's acquisition of Albertsons would lead to additional grocery price hikes for everyday goods, further exacerbating the financial strain consumers across the country face today,” Henry Liu, the director of the FTC's Bureau of Competition, said in a statement.

The FTC, which said the proposed deal would be the largest grocery merger in U.S. history, said it would also erase competition for workers, threatening their ability to win higher wages, better benefits and improved working conditions.

The Biden administration has also shown a willingness to challenge big mergers in court. Last month, the Justice Department&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jetblue-spirit-antitrust-acquisition-45568e98f87b549ba2c66ac89821812d">sued to block a proposed merger</a>&nbsp;between JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines.

The action by the FTC and the states follows lawsuits filed earlier this year in Colorado and Washington to block the merger. The states that joined the FTC lawsuit Monday are Arizona, California, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Wyoming.

Kroger has promised to invest $500 million to lower prices as soon as the deal closes. It said it also invested in price reductions when it merged with Harris Teeter in 2014 and Roundy’s in 2016. Kroger also promised to invest $1.3 billion in store improvements at Albertsons as part of the deal.

Last year, C&amp;S Wholesale Grocers agreed to purchase 413 stores and eight distribution centers that Kroger and Albertsons agreed to divest in markets where the two companies’ stores overlapped. C&amp;S said it would honor all collective bargaining agreements with workers.

Still, the United Food and Commercial Workers union, which represents 835,000 grocery workers in the U.S. and Canada, voted last year to oppose the merger, saying Kroger and Albertsons had failed to be transparent about the potential impact of the merger on workers.

The union was also critical of a $4 billion payout to Albertsons shareholders that was announced as part of the merger deal. Several states, including Washington and California,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/idaho-state-government-illinois-california-seattle-business-ab329b299c257b16575f1a74e93624b3">tried unsuccessfully to block the payment</a>&nbsp;in court, saying it would weaken Albertsons financially.

Kroger and Albertsons had hoped to close the deal early this year. But the two companies announced in January that it was more likely to close in the first half of Kroger’s fiscal year. Kroger’s fiscal second quarter ends Aug. 17.

US sues to block $24B merger of grocery giants Kroger, Albertsons

Reserved seating in the Grandstand is $45 and $30. ​

Record nominations for USD 308 staff

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach explained why he has introduced a bill to allow for a different method of execution in Kansas in death penalty cases.

"Right now, Kansas has the death penalty on the books, but we don't have a means of actually achieving the execution of an inmate, when the time comes and all of the appeals have been exhausted," Kobach said. "My point to the legislators was, the state of Kansas is lying to the people of Kansas if it says we can carry out the death penalty right now."

The law as it sits now only allows for execution by lethal injection. The companies that made those drugs before don't want to do it now.

"Over the last few years, lethal injection has become very difficult, because the pharmaceutical companies, like Pfizer, have said, we're not going to allow our chemicals to be used in the death penalty, because they politically oppose it," Kobach said. "The European Union countries have said, we're not going to allow the chemicals to be exported to the United States for use in the death penalty. It's become very difficult to obtain them. Indeed, in South Carolina recently, they had to postpone two executions, because they still couldn't obtain the drugs."

The method being contemplated by the proposed legislation is&nbsp;nitrogen hypoxia. <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/alabama-man-shook-violently-on-gurney-during-first-ever-nitrogen-gas-execution/ar-BB1hhPTe">The AP reported that</a> the latest person executed by this method, Alabama convicted murderer&nbsp;Kenneth Eugene Smith, who was killed by that state Jan. 25, convulsed in seizurelike spasms for at least two minutes of the 22-minute execution. Kansas has not executed anyone since 1965, even though the death penalty has been on the books again in Kansas since 1994.

"It doesn't really raise the issue, are we going to have the death penalty or not," Kobach said. "It's, if we're going to have the death penalty, let's be ready. We do have a couple cases that could be ready for execution to be carried out within the next year or two."

It is theoretically possible, if the bill made it out of committee and onto the floor, that the larger question of the death penalty could be raised by an amendment being made to the bill, as opening up the overall topic would likely be germane, depending on the ruling of those legislative bodies.

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Association of School Boards announced its Leadership for Tomorrow Class of 2024. &nbsp;

Leadership for Tomorrow gives board members, superintendents and administrators time to explore change theories and strategies, participate in leadership skill training and expand understanding of education and key issues for effective governance and raising student achievement. Through five two-day sessions, the class will visit local schools, hear classroom presentations and participate in class discussions of issues and challenges facing Kansas education. &nbsp;

At the end of the program, LFT members walk away with a new set of skills and knowledge that better prepares them for success in the modern education environment.&nbsp;

Participants are nominated and then chosen through an application process that focuses on individual leadership in Kansas public education and participation in activities that promote effective governance and raise student achievement. &nbsp;&nbsp;

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Twenty-two new law enforcement officers, including one from Hutchinson, graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on February 23, 2024, in a ceremony held in KLETC's Integrity Auditorium. KLETC Police Instructor Senior Mike Satterlee was the class coordinator for the graduating class, and the commencement speaker for the ceremony was Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training Executive Director Doug Schroeder.

Executive Director Schroeder encouraged the graduates to consider their priorities daily because as law enforcement officers, they will work long hours, give a lot to their communities, and miss social and family events. “An intentional and routine, honest evaluation is needed of your priorities daily to make sure they stay in line.” Throughout his remarks, Executive Director Schroeder offered words of encouragement, and in closing, a call to action.&nbsp;

“Class 321, I encourage you to grow more self-aware; I encourage you not to be afraid of failure; I encourage you to reconsider your priorities daily.”

Under the authority of Vice Provost and Director of Police Training Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting to the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority.

NEWTON, Kan. — According to a Friday update from the City of Newton, signage went up around Newton playgrounds and sports fields announcing the City's new tobacco-free parks policy. 

The City Commission adopted the policy last November at the request of the Healthy Harvey Coalition as a way to combat the health hazards of second-hand smoke and littering of cigarette butts in parks. 

Violations of the policy are not criminal in nature, but violators could be asked to cease tobacco use or leave the park property.&nbsp;

Signs up regarding Newton's tobacco-free parks

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dan Murray with NFIB-Kansas was not pleased that Gov. Laura Kelly's veto of the flat tax bill passed by the Republican-controlled Kansas Legislature was sustained.

"It's unfortunate that the House was not able to muster the votes," Murray said. "We were not very optimistic that it would achieve the votes on the Senate side. Nonetheless, back to the drawing board. We think that Kansas small business owners need and deserve a tax break. We're sitting on $3 billion or more in reserves."

Murray does see a path forward this session, though.

"I hope, on behalf of our members, that the legislature finds a way to get there with the governor," Murray said. "I think that probably, the governor's proposal, which she put forward, which includes many of the elements that the Republican legislature has championed, if there's an addition of some reductions in income tax rates, there might be a path forward to get something done still, yet this year."

The importance of lowering the rate is amplified by the way taxes work for the majority of small business owners.

"Most small business owners, 75%, are filing at the individual level," Murray said. "Reductions in the individual income tax directly benefits small business owners, which means they can redirect those savings back to their employees through higher wages and benefits. They can redirect those savings to capital improvements in their businesses."

The turnaround deadline for bills in non-exempt committees to pass one chamber or be dead for the session was Friday, but tax policy takes place in exempt committees, so for that purpose, turnaround just allows for more focus on that type of issue in the session's final weeks.

LIBERAL, Kan. — No. 15 Hutchinson (23-4, 18-3) used back-to-back-to-back threes, from three different players, to start the second half on an 11-0 run against Seward (7-20, 5-16) Saturday night.

Kam Thomas, J.P. Ricks and Landon Wagler each knocked down a triple to put Hutchinson up 45-28.

The three by Thomas was the only one he hit all night.

Thomas finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks, but the league's best three-point shooter went just 1-of-10 from distance and 4-of-18 from the floor.

Tino Simon just missed a double-double with his 19 points and nine rebounds.

Kernan Bundy scored six of his 10 points from the free-throw line, where he was 6-of-7.

Jaden Martin and Dave Olaniyi scored 15 each for Seward.

Hutchinson outrebounded Seward 49-31 and scored 21 points on 14 Saint turnovers.

LIBERAL, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson (27-0, 21-0) clinched the Jayhawk Conference outright for the 10th time in John Ontjes' 17 seasons.

The Dragons trailed by five after one quarter, but used a 23-8 second quarter to take a 10-point lead into halftime.

Hailey Jackson scored 16 of her 20 total points in the first half.

Kiki Smith hit 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and finished with 24 points.

Journey Armstead recorded a career-high 11 assists and accounted for half of the team's total (22).

Allie Myers entered the game averaging a double-double over her last two contests. The Dragons held Myers to 1-of-5 shooting with two total points and four rebounds.

Hutchinson shot 86.7% in the third quarter, 56.1% for the game, despite shooting just 4-of-14 (28.6%) in the game's first 10 minutes.

"This year, we are doing more of a casino theme," said John Young with Rise Up Reno. "It's called&nbsp;Shamrock N' Roll and it's at the Cosmosphere. I'm really excited to see how that will look, because having the casino underneath the SR-71, it's just going to be a beautiful backdrop and a lot of fun."

The event is from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. March 1.

"Tickets are $65," Young said. "That includes, when you come in, you'll get some credit towards casino play. We'll also serve heavy hors d'oeuvres. There will be other stuff going on inside. We'll have a photo booth, a DJ going on. There will also be a cash bar."
