HutchCC spokesperson Denny Stoecklein reminds us of an event going on this week for students going on to something after high school other than arts or sports.

"We all hear about the high school athletes who are signing to take their skills to the next level," Stoecklein said. "This is the exact same type of thing, but these are kids on the technical education side that are making their commitment to come to Hutch. They're going to have a signing day for them to celebrate that."

The event is the first-ever Career and Technical Education Letter-of-Intent Signing Day, sponsored by the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy and Hutchinson Community College.

"Whether its a Superior or a Kuhn Krause or any number of manufacturers that are looking for machining, welding, you name it," Stoecklein said. "All of those opportunities are available right here, very economically and we know the jobs are out there."

Programs involved in the day’s event include:

Automotive Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology

Signing sessions will happen at 9 and 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy, 800 15th Circle. During the 1:30 p.m. signing session, Bill Murphy, deputy secretary of business development for the Kansas Department of Commerce, will speak.

Stoecklein touts signing day Thursday

NICKERSON, Kan. — With the pandemic forcing school districts to go into the virtual learning mode over the past year, many districts are starting new virtual schools. Others like Nickerson USD 309 are expecting an increase in their virtual school enrollment for the existing Central State Academy (CSA).

According to the district, the CSA virtual program experienced little change when COVID-19 forced many traditional schools to move students to remote learning. USD 309 says they are  preparing for a continued increase in enrollment from families who have found that virtual learning works best for them. 

Central State offers an accredited curriculum and partners with Hutchinson Community College to offer dual credits to high school students who plan to attend college in the future.

USD 309 expects increase in virtual school enrollment

YODER — Twenty-five new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on April 30 at a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium. Officer Joshua Westerfield of the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, &amp; Tourism was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was chief of police for the Ottawa Police Department, Adam Weingartner. Rob McClarty, KLETC senior instructor of police, was the class coordinator for the 277th Basic Training Class.

Officer Luke Berning from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class “Top Shot.” Officers Christopher Allison from the Kansas City, Kansas Community College Campus Police; Gene Berlin from the Riley County Police Department and Spencer Kochanowski from Salina Police Department walked, ran or biked more than 200 miles during their time at KLETC and exceeded the other physical requirements of the 200 Mile Club including push-ups, sit-ups and a timed run. Kochanowski also received the Fitness Award. 

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of University of Kansas Lifelong &amp; Professional Education.

The graduates, who began their training in January 2021, represented 19 municipal, county and state law enforcement agencies from across Kansas. Graduates are listed below by county and agency:

KLETC graduates 277th Basic Training Class

Hutchinson, Kan. – Hutchinson Community College has announced that Dan “Coach Nac” Naccarato, instructor of business management and entrepreneurship, has been selected as the 2020-21 Dragon Educator of the Year.

Naccarato was selected from nominees from all academic areas by the HutchCC Student Government Association (SGA) for the honor. The instructors are nominated by Hutchinson Community College students, and then complete a selection and personal interview process conducted by SGA. Naccarato received his honor at the College’s commencement on April 30.

Coach Nac teaches Introduction to Business, Leadership, Supervision and Business Internship, and he provides academic advising for Business majors. It is Naccarato’s second time being selected as Dragon Educator of the Year, having been previously chosen for the 2015-16 school year as well.

He joined the Hutchinson Community College faculty 17 years ago after he retired from The Kroger Co. as Director of Human Resources and Corporate Benefits at Dillons.

Naccarato received his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from Emporia State University in 1982, and earned his MBA at Emporia State in 1985.

"Coach Nac" is Dragon Educator of the Year

For the second-straight week, the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team finds itself in the thick of an NJCAA Top 10 national matchup.

The Blue Dragons (4-0, 3-0 KJCCC) travels to No. 7 Independence (3-1, 3-1 KJCCC) at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Emmott Field in Independence.

Last Sunday at Gowans Stadium, the top-ranked Blue Dragons took care of business against No. 3 Garden City, defeating the Broncbusters 23-7.

Defense was the headliner against the Broncbusters. National Defensive Player of the Week&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/folsom_daishon_8y0x">Daishon Folsom</a>&nbsp;led a Blue Dragon defense that held the Busters to seven points, 201 total yards and a negative 16 yards rushing. Folsom was in on two of five Blue Dragon quarterback sacks. The Dragons also pressured Garden City's Mike Irwin eight other times. Hutchinson's defense, which hasn't allowed more than 10 points in a game this season, also had nine total tackles for loss and 11 passes broken up.

Hutchinson will need a similar defensive effort against Independence, which is currently the NJCAA's top offensive scoring team at 48.3 points per game. The Pirates are also No. 2 in the nation in rushing offense at 267.8 yards per game. Tavion Thomas is the nation's sixth-leading rusher at 104.0 yards per game with five touchdowns. Thomas averages 8.2 yards per carry. Thomas didn't play last week in Independence's 68-10 win at Highland. Running back Pat Bowen stepped in and rushed for 214 yards and three touchdowns against the Scotties on only 11 carries.

Independence is the defending Jayhawk Conference champions. The Pirates' only blemish on a 3-1 record is a 14-10 loss to then No. 3 Garden City at Emmott Field on April 17. The Pirates had a 10-0 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the Busters rallied for the victory.

Independence head coach Jason Martin is the third head coach for the Pirates in three seasons. Martin has been a part of the Independence program throughout that period as an assistant.

Sunday's matchup between the Blue Dragons and Pirates will be the 84th in a series that dates back to 1930. Hutchinson leads the overall series 55-23-5, winning last season 31-21 at Gowans Stadium.

Wesley Scott Buhrman, 64, of Hutchinson, died April 26, 2021, while in the care of Hospice House. He was born July 24, 1956, in St. John, to Carl and Jean (Kernohan) Buhrman.

Wes graduated from Scott Community High School in 1975 and from Liberal Area Vocational Technical School, with training in mechanics. He followed in his father’s footsteps and was hired by Cities Service Gas Company a few years after graduating from Vocational college and he worked there for over 20 years in different capacities (Mechanic, Superintendent of Vehicle Operations, and Meter Technician).

Wes&nbsp;fulfilled his life-long&nbsp;dream of owning his own business when he opened the&nbsp;"Buhrman Service Station"&nbsp;on Main street in Hutchinson. Wes continued his self-employment dream in a handyman capacity once he committed to the care of both his parents through their later years.

Wes is survived by: his children, Deon Buhrman of Basehor, Gerome Buhrman (Jennifer) of Olathe; grandchildren, Kaden, Ashtyn Payton, Mia, Emmerson; mother, Jean Buhrman of Hutchinson; brother, Ron Buhrman (Deb) of Hesston; nephews and niece, Brett, Blake, Amy; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Buhrman.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021, at 10th&nbsp;Avenue United Methodist Church, 300 W. 10th&nbsp;Ave., Hutchinson. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Attica Cemetery. Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with the family present to receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

HUTCHINSON – In the interests of continuing safe practices, Hutchinson Community College has made modifications for its annual commencement. These modifications involve holding two ceremonies instead of the traditional single event, social-distancing the graduate seating, limiting the number of guests able to attend and providing masks to all graduates and attendees.

“The academic achievements of our students deserve to be properly recognized and celebrated”, stated HutchCC President Dr. Carter File. “Toward this goal we are excited to return to an in person commencement with two ceremonies on Friday, April 30 at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm.”

HutchCC releases Friday commencement plans

Kan. — President Joe Biden is proposing two years of free community college as part of his $1.8 trillion American Families Plan. 

"Hutchinson Community College is in favor of anything that lowers the cost of education for students," said HCC President Carter File. "Until I see the details of the plan, it's difficult to give you a fair read on it, but if it helps students complete and it helps students lower their attendance costs, I don't think that anybody can argue with that."

It's not as if federal aid isn't already a huge part of what helps the college to function.

"Because of our cost structure, we have a number of students, probably over half of our students, receive some form of federal financial aid," File said. "Many are already attending, tuition and fees paid, because of the Pell Grant. The Pell Grant will cover our tuition, fees and in many cases, books, anyway."

File knows that the devil is in the details, but an expansion of current federal programs would probably be the way that would be the most seamless with what they currently do.

"The infrastructure is already in place," File said. "We have a federal financial aid office that already assists students in getting federal aid. It would seem that if they expanded eligibility under another program, such as the Pell Grant or a loan with some kind of loan forgiveness on the back end, it makes sense that that would make it more flexible, rather than writing something from scratch."

What a final version of the plan will look like by the time it makes it to the President's desk, if it gets that far, remains to be seen.

HutchCC President wants to see details on Biden proposal

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/karhayu_esther_a3vx">Esther Karhayu</a>&nbsp;scored two goals to lead the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team to its first victory over a nationally ranked opponent in seven seasons on Wednesday.

Karhayu scored 2 minutes, 8 seconds into the game to stagger the Cougars and applied the dagger just 17 seconds into second half as Hutchinson shut out the No. 20-ranked Barton Cougars 3-0 at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The last Hutchinson win over an NJCAA-ranked opponent came on October 17, 2014 when the Blue Dragons defeated No. 15 Butler 2-1 in overtime in El Dorado. The Blue Dragon had lost four-straight games against ranked opponent until Wednesday. The last Blue Dragon win over a nationally ranked team at the Salthawk Sports Complex was just five days before the 2014 Butler game, a 5-1 win over No. 20 NOC-Tonkawa on October 12, 2014.

Hutchinson improved to 4-2-2 overall and in the Jayhawk Conference. Barton dropped to 6-3-1 and 5-3-1. The Blue Dragons are 1-0-1 against the Cougars this season.

Hutchinson will play host to Neosho County at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons struck quickly when&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/franke_marah_az58">Marah Franke</a>&nbsp;played a ball into the box that deflected off a Barton defender and Karhayu hammered the ball from about 10 feet into the goal for a 1-0 Hutchinson lead just 2:08 into the contest. Franke and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/busker_cheyenne_98jn">Cheyenne Busker</a>&nbsp;were credited with assists on the first Karhayu goal of the season.

The Dragons then put the Cougars on the ropes with just seconds left before halftime.

The Dragons were awarded a corner kick with 33 seconds left in the first half after a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/lawless_zara_7b5x">Zara Lawless</a>&nbsp;direct free kick was deflected over the back line by Barton goalkeeper Nia Baker.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/maher_aimee_51ht">Aimee Maher</a>&nbsp;hustled to initiate the set piece and sent the corner to the near post where Baker mishandled it.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2020-21/bios/dickinson_lani_tr96">Lani Dickinson</a>&nbsp;hammered home a point-blank shot for a 2-0 Hutchinson lead with 18.8 seconds to play in the first half.

Maher picked up her second assist of the game when she intercepted a Barton defensive clearing attempt and slid a pass past two Cougar midfielders to Karhayu, who split the Barton back line and beat Baker on the ground to Baker's left for a 3-0 lead just 17 seconds into the second half.

This was Karhayu's second career multi-goal game. The first was a four-goal performance against Hesston College on September 14, 2019.

Blue Dragon Soccer stuns No. 20 Barton 3-0

Bonnie Mae (Swindaman) Burnette, 95, passed away at Hospice House in Hutchinson on April 25, 2021. She was born Feb. 5, 1926, at the family home near Nankin, Ohio. 

She graduated from Howard (KS) High School in 1944 and attended Kansas State Teachers College (Emporia) before accepting a position teaching 4th&nbsp;and then 3rd&nbsp;grade at Coldwater (KS) Elementary School.&nbsp; 

She married Burke Burnette in 1948, and their daughter Michaelyn was born in 1949. After a divorce, Bonnie and her daughter moved to Hutchinson, where Bonnie attended Adela Hale Business School. Bonnie worked for many years in the Industrial Engineering Department at Cessna. 

She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing the piano, and drinking coffee while talking with friends. She made Christmas very special with festive decorations and delicious meals; her sugar cookies will be much missed. She enjoyed playing with children; her face would light up when holding a baby or interacting with a child. She was always generous with help and forthright advice.

She was preceded in death by her parents W. C. Swindaman and Mildred (Tucker) Swindaman, brothers William, Robert and Dick Swindaman and sister Betty Morr. 

She is survived by her daughter Michaelyn Burnette, son-in-law Terry Tierney, grandson John Tierney, and nieces and nephews including Joyce Telakaowiz, Beverley Ebenshade, Connie Johnston, Bill and Bob Swindaman, Pat Swindaman, Lisa Thomison Ballout along with numerous great nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

Burial will be in Nankin (Orange) Cemetary, where she will rest by her parents.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, at Elliott Mortuary.

JoAnn Johnston, 92, of Hutchinson, died April 26, 2021, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. She was born Aug. 29, 1928, in Hutchinson, to Oscar and Georgia (Baxley) Moore.

JoAnn graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1946. She was a homemaker and a mother. JoAnn also worked as a teacher’s aide for a special education class for a time. While living in Texas she was active in her church, especially helping with bereavement dinners. JoAnn was also very talented at crocheting.

On March 20, 1949, she married Travis Johnston, in Hutchinson. They shared 65 years together before he passed away on June 5, 2014.

JoAnn is survived by daughter, Jean Gordon (Jim), Hutchinson; son, Jim Johnston (Charla), Spring Hill; daughter, Jill Osborn (Steve), St. Louis, Missouri; son, Joe Johnston (Beth), College Station, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Travis Johnston; daughter, Jane Johnston; and brother, Jim Moore.

Private family funeral service will be Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park. Ava Jane Campbell, 89, passed away Monday, April 26, 2021 at Mt. Hope Nursing Home, Mt. Hope, KS. Ava was born July 7, 1931 in Eldorado, KS, the daughter of Theodore J and Lucy E. (Barnes) McAlister. 

In 1949, she graduated from Hutchinson High School and later received her Associates Degree from Hutchinson Community College. On June 7, 1977 she married Thomas J. Campbell in Enid, OK. To this union six children, Darrell, Doug, Beth, David, Julie and Dean. 

Ava worked in purchasing and sales for over 20 years. 

Ava is survived by her children, Darrell (Linda) Miller, Doug (Heather) Miller, Beth Miller (Les Wright), David (Deb) Miller, Julie (Scott) Welch, and Dean (Joan) Miller; three sisters, Georgia Maxwell, Judy Trimmell, and Kathy Maxwell; one brothers, Roy McAlister; 12 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by his parents, her husband, Thomas; and a brother Jim McAlister.

The Schmidt Foundation, a foundation focused on communities served by Eagle Communications, contributed $2000 Wednesday to the scholarship fund at Hutchinson Community College. A portion of the funds will go to a HutchCC Presidential Scholar and a portion will go to a HutchCC Leadership Scholar.

"The Presidential and the Leadership program have been designed to attract strong academic students and also students that have strong leadership capabilities," said Cindy Keast with HutchCC.

The program is designed for Kansas high school graduates.

"We provide approximately 165 to 170 scholarships for students," Keast said. "The program started in 1993-94 with approximately 30 students, so you can see how we've grown."

The Foundation has also invested in scholarships in other Eagle communities to help nursing students at NCK-Tech and continues to provide scholarships at Fort Hays State University.

Schmidt Foundation gives to HutchCC scholarships

WICHITA – Heading into the final round of the NJCAA District III/Region VI Championship, the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team had all but secured the team's 20th-straight NJCAA national tournament berth.

The Blue Dragons were thinking bigger on Tuesday at Crestview Country Club's South Course.

Hutchinson rallied from a stroke down after 36 holes to snap a seven-year District III stranglehold by Indian Hills, narrowly defeating the No. 2-ranked Warriors on Tuesday by one stroke to capture third District III championship in team history, the first since 2009.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2020-21/bios/crockett_harry_uzwd">Harry Crockett</a>&nbsp;kept the District III individual title in the family by winning the 2021 championship by six strokes. Crockett had a tournament-low 4-under 67 in Tuesday's final round. Older brother&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2020-21/bios/crockett_charlie_7tfw">Charlie Crockett</a>&nbsp;won the 2019 District individual championship. The 2020 spring season was wiped out by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Blue Dragons also repeated as Region VI men's golf champion, winning the program's 20th overall regional title. Hutchinson defeated regional runner-up Garden City by 36 strokes.

The No. 3-ranked Blue Dragons will go into the 2021 NJCAA Division I Men's Championship on May 10-14 at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas, on a five-tournament winning streak. The Blue Dragons have a season-record six tournament team wins going back to the fall season when Hutchinson won the NJCAA National Preview on October.

The district team championship literally came down to the tournament's 54th hole on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons posted a 54-hole total of 869 to Indian Hills' 870. The Warriors had Monday rounds of 293 and 292, while the Dragons had rounds of 294 and 292.

The Dragons edged the Warriors 283-285 in Tuesday's third and final round.

Charlie Crocket's 67 led the way for Hutchinson. Crockett had three birdies, one bogey and a key eagle on the par-5 seventh hole.

The Blue Dragons also counted&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2020-21/bios/partridge_ben_nliv">Ben Partridge</a>'s even-par 71,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2020-21/bios/mccrae_tradgon_n8mn">Trey McCrae</a>'s 1-over 72 and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2020-21/bios/crockett_charlie_7tfw">Charlie Crockett</a>'s 2-over 73. Harry Fearn led Indian Hills with a 3-under 68, Antoine Sale's 1-under 71, Thomas Burou's 1-over 73 and Max Hartman's 4-over 75.

The Blue Dragons had three less birdies (17-14) and eight more bogeys (21-13) than Indian Hills. The Dragons made that up with Crockett's eagle and five Warrior double bogeys in the final round.

Hutchinson had three players finish in the District Top 10.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2020-21/bios/crockett_harry_uzwd">Harry Crockett</a>&nbsp;became the third Blue Dragon to win the District III Individual Top 10 with a 54-hole total of 209. Crockett had rounds of 72 and 70 on Monday. He is the ninth Region VI individual champion in program history.

Partridge finished in a three-way tie for second at 215. Partridge shot rounds of 70, 74 and 71.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2020-21/bios/crockett_charlie_7tfw">Charlie Crockett</a>&nbsp;placed 10th in the district and third in the Region VI individual standings at 221. He had rounds of 75, 73 and 73.

McCrae tied for 15th in the district and earned first-team All-Region with a fifth-place finish after a 54-hole total of 224. McCrae had tournament rounds of 77, 75 and 72.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2020-21/bios/rios-ceballos_cameron_hq9q">Cameron Rios-Ceballos</a>&nbsp;shot a 6-over 77 on Tuesday to finish tied for 25th at 220. Rios-Ceballos had Monday rounds of 77 and 76. Rios-Ceballos finished tied for 13th in the Region.

Blue Dragon individual player Ben Hilton tied for 29th in the district and was 14th in the region at 231. He closed the tournament with a 76 on Tuesday.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2020-21/bios/alonzo_addison_9qi0">Addison Alonzo</a>&nbsp;tied for 34th overall and 21st in the region at 235. Alonzo closed the tournament with an 80.

Hutchinson will be making its 23rd overall appearance in the NJCAA Championships in two weeks.

Blue Dragon Golf wins first District III Title since 2009

The Hutchinson Community College baseball team reached the 30-win benchmark for the 27th time in program history on Monday at Hobart-Detter Field with a doubleheader sweep of the Sterling College Junior Varsity.

The Blue Dragons hit a combined six home runs and tied a single-game record for triple in single-game history with victories of 12-4 and 20-4 in five innings in a doubleheader that made of for the loss of what would have been a Tuesday game with State Fair Community College, which had to cancel become of scheduling conflicts.

The Blue Dragons improve to 31-11 overall. Hutch reaches the 30-win mark for the seventh time under head coach Ryan Schmidt, who moves within three wins of surpassing John Burgi as the winningest coach in program history. Schmidt is at 312 coaching wins. Earlier this season, Schmidt moved past Kyle Crookes into second place on the Blue Dragon coaching wins' list.

With five combined home runs, the Blue Dragons are tied for second in the Jayhawk West and tied for seventh in the NJCAA with 75 home runs.

Blue Dragon Baseball hits 30 win mark

EL DORADO –&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/bevan_natalie_gq93">Natalie Bevan</a>&nbsp;homered twice, while&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/grimes_madison_qa73">Madison Grimes</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/head_easton_e2iz">Easton Head</a>&nbsp;each added round-trippers, but the No. 3-ranked Butler Grizzlies had too much firepower for the Hutchinson Community College softball team on Monday at East Park.

The Grizzlies defeated the Blue Dragons 7-5 and 12-4 in six innings in a battle of the top two teams in the Jayhawk East on Monday in a doubleheader makeup from Saturday.

The Blue Dragons are now 25-15 overall and 15-9 in the Jayhawk East. The Grizzlies won their 32nd and 33rd games in a row and improved to 37-2 overall and 22-0 in league play. The Blue Dragons close out the regular season on Saturday with the Pratt Beavers at Fun Valley.

Bevan had a big day going a combined 3 for 6 with two home runs and four RBIs to lead the Blue Dragons. Bevan hit her seventh and eight home runs of the season. In addition to Bevan, Grimes belted her team-high 11th home run of the season in Game 1 and Head hit her fifth of the season in the second game.

Butler hit four home runs as well and Shayna Espy and Emily Adler combined for nine RBIs to lead the Grizzlies offensively.

The Dragons battled back to within two runs with a Grimes' home run and a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/dunn_kylee_bdh1">Kylee Dunn</a>&nbsp;since that plated Bevan to cut the Dragon deficit to 7-5.

The Blue Dragons couldn't complete the comeback. All Hutchinson got in the final two innings off Butler pitcher Maddie Redman was a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/miller_haley_c81y">Haley Miller</a>&nbsp;bunt single in the sixth.

Bevan was 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs. She scored two runs. Miller was 2 for 4. Head had a double in the opening game. Grimes homered. She and Dunn had the other RBIs in Game 1.

Catcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/williams_lexi_p2uv">Lexi Williams</a>&nbsp;had two stolen bases in the first game. Williams now has 48 steals for the season and 77 for her career.
