The Hutchinson Community College football team maintained its status as the hottest team in the NJCAA Saturday in the Salt City Bowl.

From&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/laible_dylan_vw09">Dylan Laible</a>'s fifth-straight 300-yard passing game to&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/edwards_tye_6sym">Tye Edwards</a>' 200-plus rushing yards to&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/benson_malik_dv1a">Malik Benson</a>'s Hail Mary touchdown at the end of the first half and a single-season record for receiving yards, the Blue Dragons amassed 707 total yards as the No. 5 Blue Dragons defeated No. 8 Hinds Community College 66-34 at Gowans Stadium.

The Blue Dragons close the 2021 season at 9-2, winning six games in a row by an average of 39.2 points per game. The Blue Dragons win their fourth-straight bowl game, winning in 11 of their last 12 bowls. Hinds closed its season at 8-4.

Benson was named the 2021 Salt City Bowl's Offensive MVP with career highs of seven catches and 198 yards with two touchdowns, which all came in the first half. The 198 receiving yards was a Salt City Bowl record.

Benson made perhaps the biggest play of the game on the final play of the first half. With two seconds remaining in the half and the Blue Dragons leading by three points, Laible launched a Hail Mary that was deflected by&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/braham_cortez_0pxe">Cortez Braham</a>&nbsp;into the hands of Benson for a touchdown that gave the Blue Dragons a 38-28 lead at halftime.

That reception made Benson the Blue Dragons' single-season record-holder for receiving yardage with 1,226 yards, surpassing Hall of Famer Lonnie Crittendon's 1970 record of 1,205 yards. Also, Benson's 198 yards in the Salt City Bowl was the third-highest single-game total for a Blue Dragon in team history. Benson now owns the Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 8 games for single-game receiving yards by a Blue Dragon.

Blue Dragon sophomore defensive end&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/tucker_nademe_lpn2">Nadame Tucker</a>&nbsp;was named the Salt City Bowl's Defensive MVP with seven total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 quarterback sacks a forced fumble and quarterback hurry.

There were 19 Salt City Bowl records broken and three others tied by the Blue Dragons and Eagles on Saturday. Among the highlights:

+ Laible completed 15 of 24 passes for an SCB record 310 yards and three touchdowns. Laible also had his first career rushing touchdown.

+ Edwards ran for a career-high and SCB record 210 yards on 19 carries and touchdowns of 1 and 6 yards. He also had an SCB record for the longest run from scrimmage, going for 85 yards to the Hinds' 1 in the first quarter.

+ Hutchinson's 707 total yards and 345 passing yards were both SCB records.

The Blue Dragons and Eagles also combined for a single-quarter record 49 points in the first quarter (Hutchinson 28, Hinds 21). Hutchinson had 309 yards in the opening quarter and both teams combined for 480 yards.

The Blue Dragons scored on Braham's 33-yard touchdown receptions, Edwards' 1-yard run,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/simmons_jaheim_c6dn">Jaheim Simmons</a>' 3-yard run and Benson's 63-yard catch and run with 20 seconds remaining in the quarter. Hinds countered with a Jaiden Burns 21-yard touchdown reception and touchdown runs of 48 and 29 yards from Jeffrey Pittman. The Dragons led 28-21 after one quarter.

Just 14 seconds into the second quarter, the Eagles tied the game at 28 when Ruben Lee connected with Tabashi Thomas for a SCB record 85-yard touchdown to tie the game at 28-all.

The Blue Dragons answered that score with a SCB record 39-yard field goal by&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/moya_c.j._vpke">C.J. Moya</a>&nbsp;with 10 minutes to play in the period. The next score was Benson's Hail Mary catch at the end of the first half that came the Blue Dragons a 38-28 lead.

Hutchinson's lead increased to 52-28 after three quarters on&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/kedzior_dylan_cjzb">Dylan Kedzior</a>'s 56-yard touchdown run and an Edwards 6-yard dash to the end zone.

The lead grew to 59-28 on Laible's first career rushing touchdown, a 1-yard sneak with 11:20 to play. Hinds snapped Hutchinson's run of 31 unanswered points with a Kaleb Mosley 8-yard touchdown reception. Blue Dragon backup quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/cash_daisean_1xv8">Daisean Cash</a>&nbsp;closed out the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown pass to&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/bussey_marcello_7bbd">Marcello Bussey</a>&nbsp;with 2:26 to play in the fourth quarter.

Simmons had 87 rushing yards on 13 carries and Kedzior had 67 yards on the ground on four carries. Hind rolled up 398 total yards (153 rushing, 245 passing). Ruben Lee combined 14 of 22 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns. He was sacked five times. Pittman added to his nation-leading total for rushing touchdowns and barreled for 195 rush yards on 26 carries. Kyziah Pruitt had five catches for 53 yards.

With the huge offensive output on Saturday, several Blue Dragons continued to move up career and single-season charts:

+ Injured early in the first quarter,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/lewis_anwar_72y9">Anwar Lewis</a>&nbsp;had eight yards on two carries, but moved up to No. 8 on the career rushing list with 1,608 yards.

🏈  Blue Dragon offense explodes again for Salt City Bowl Victory

Ruth Miller, 102; former missionary to Burundi, Africa, passed peacefully into glory to be with her Jesus on Tuesday, December 2, 2021, at Mennonite Friendship Communities in South Hutchinson, KS.

Ruth was born January 1, 1919 in Henryetta, OK, the daughter of Joseph Luther and Mary Elizabeth (Hall) Madden. She graduated High School in 1938, went to State College in Ada, Oklahoma, where she graduated with a Life Time Teaching Certificate. Ruth moved back to her hometown to teach Speech and English.  During that time, God made it clear that he wanted her to be a missionary. In obedience, she enrolled at Bethany Nazarene College to prepare herself.  On June 4, 1944, Ruth married Alfred Miller, the love of her life and partner in missionary endeavors.

Aside from several years spent in the States, Ruth and Alfred served effectively as missionaries in Central Africa from 1946 until 1991.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents Luther and Izzy Madden; husband, Alfred Miller; sisters, Florene Madden, Margaret Decker and Allene Pitman; brothers, David Madden, and Frank Madden; daughter-in-law, Jacque Miller; and granddaughter, Kristin Rathbun.

Ruth is survived by her four children; Fred (Marvia) Miller of Colby KS, Grady (Carol) Miller of Bolton KS, David Miller of Fort Collins CO, and Ruthie Kemper of Wichita KS; nine grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

A private family graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 7, at the Manchester Cemetery in Manchester, OK. Memorials may be sent to Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson, KS 67502.  All contributions will go towards the missionary projects in Burundi Africa.

Kathryn Elaine Davenport, 79, of Hutchinson, died December 3, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born February 23, 1942, in Lyons, to Frank B. and Melba L. (Smith) Runyan.

Elaine graduated from Windom High School in 1960 and Hutchinson Community College. She worked in the accounting department of Kwik Shop and also as a Kwik Shop store manager. Elaine then became a co-owner and operator of Gambino’s Pizza at various locations, including South Hutchinson for 15 years. She enjoyed gardening, painting, and crafting, but her favorite hobby was her grandchildren. Elaine was of the Christian faith.

On October 11, 1963, she married John W. Davenport, in Hutchinson. They shared 58 years of marriage. He survives.

Also surviving are: daughter, Karmen Davenport of Manhattan; son, Jason Davenport and wife Angie of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Abbie and Griffin Davenport; brothers, Steve Runyan and friend Sharon Watson of Caldwell, Royce and LeAnn Runyan of Cape Fair, MO; and many extended family members.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, John Grayson Davenport.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 10, 2021, at Elliott Chapel. Private family burial will follow in Bean Memorial Cemetery, Little River. Friends may sign the memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday thru Thursday, with family present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.

Betty Jean Greever, 81, passed away November 30, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born September 1, 1940, in Hutchinson, to Bernard Paul and Arlie Irene (Taylor) Hiebert.

Betty was a 1958 graduate of Nickerson High School, and graduated from Sidney’s Hairdressing College, Hutchinson.&nbsp; Co-owner operator of Grave Builders and designed multiple homes in Hutchinson.

She was a 35-year member of the Silver Leaf Chapter #434 Order of Eastern Star, Hutchinson, lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, charter member of Central Kansas Landlord Association, longtime member of the Salt City Cruisers Car Club, and Zion Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, Salt City Square Dance Club, past guardian of &nbsp;Job’s Daughter, Bethel 15 and member of The Daughters of the Nile.&nbsp; She was a beautician and the owner/president of BJ’s Investments.

&nbsp;Betty was married to the father of her children, Robert Alan Graves, and they later divorced.&nbsp; On April 2, 1983, she married Richard Wayne Greever in Hutchinson.&nbsp; They shared over 38 years of marriage.

Betty is survived by:&nbsp; husband, Richard W. Greever of Hutchinson; children, William Graves of Hutchinson, Jon D. (Amy) Graves of Crofton, MD, Leslie (Craig) Pedersen of Hutchinson, and Kathy Graves (Bryan) Speir of Hutchinson; siblings, Ardith May, Ralph (Toni) Hiebert, and Glynnis Tedder, all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Aria (Jared Hatcher) Pedersen, Neil Pedersen, Noah Pedersen, Nyle Pedersen, Brock (Rachelle) Stewart, Tyler Speir, Theoren Speir, Lauren Paige Speir, Isaac Speir, Robert ‘Bobby’ Graves, and Grayson Campbell Graves; and three great-grandchildren, Everly, Sophie, and Keaton.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her step parents; son, Steven Greever; siblings, Paul Hiebert, Vera Ummel, and Phyllis Balzer; brother-in-law, Tim Tedder; and niece, Emily Tedder.

Betty Jean Greever, 81, passed away November 30, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born September 1, 1940, in Hutchinson, to Bernard Paul and Arlie Irene (Taylor) Hiebert.Betty was a 1958 graduate of Nickerson High School, and graduated from Sidney’s Hairdressing College, Hutchinson.&nbsp; Co-owner operator of Grave Builders and designed multiple homes in Hutchinson.She was a 35-year member of the Silver Leaf Chapter #434 Order of Eastern Star, Hutchinson, lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, charter member of Central Kansas Landlord Association, longtime member of the Salt City Cruisers Car Club, and Zion Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, Salt City Square Dance Club, past guardian of &nbsp;Job’s Daughter, Bethel 15 and member of The Daughters of the Nile.&nbsp; She was a beautician and the owner/president of BJ’s Investments.&nbsp;Betty was married to the father of her children, Robert Alan Graves, and they later divorced.&nbsp; On April 2, 1983, she married Richard Wayne Greever in Hutchinson.&nbsp; They shared over 38 years of marriage.Betty is survived by:&nbsp; husband, Richard W. The Salt City Bowl makes its return after a one-year hiatus because of the Covid-19 Pandemic last season.

The Blue Dragons will be making their 24th bowl appearance in team history and their 10th in the Salt City Bowl. Hutchinson is 14-7-2 overall in bowl games and 8-1 in the Salt City Bowl.

Hinds will be making its 10th all-time bowl appearance. The Eagles are 3-6 in previous bowl games. The Eagles last played in a bowl game in 2019, the Graphic Edge Bowl in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and lost to Iowa Western 34-19. The last bowl win for Hinds came 2000, a 27-12 win over Southwest Mississippi in the Mississippi Magnolia Bowl.

The Blue Dragons (8-2) enter the bowl season as the hottest team in the nation. The Dragons rolled through the Jayhawk Conference playoffs with a combined score of 168-19 with wins over Highland No. 5 Independence and No. 11 Garden City. Hutchinson has won five in a row entering Saturday.

Hinds (8-3) was the Mississippi Conference South Division co-champion and playoff runner-up this season. The Eagles knocked off No. 1 East Mississippi 42-41 in overtime in the MCCAA playoff semifinals, but fell to Northwest Mississippi 56-21 in the championship game one week later.

Saturday's game will be only the second time in Salt City Bowl history that a match-up will have two Top 10 teams squaring off. The other came in 2015 when No. 3 Snow College and No. 9 Dodge City squared off.

The 2021 Salt City Bowl has another first with 1,000-yard running backs being featured. Hutchinson's&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/bios/lewis_anwar_72y9">Anwar Lewis</a>, who was named the KJCCC Offensive Player the Year on Thursday, rushed for 1,063 yards and 11 touchdowns. Hinds' Jeffrey Pittman rushed for 1,019 yards and a nation's best 21 rushing touchdowns.

Saturday's matchup will be the first between Hutchinson and Hinds and it will be the Blue Dragons' first-ever encounter against a MCCAA team. The last KJCCC-MCCAA matchup came in the 2017 national championship game featuring Garden City and East Mississippi.

William Martin Silverstrand, or “Bill”, as he was fondly known by most, passed away at Brookdale Assisted Living, in McPherson, on Thursday, December 2nd, 2021, at the age of 88. Bill was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on October 16th, 1933, to Martin E. and Edith B. Silverstrand. Bill was educated in the Council Bluffs Public Schools, attending Harrison Elementary School, and then Abraham Lincoln High School, where he graduated in 1951. After graduation, Bill enrolled at Creighton University, where he earned his Bachelor's of Science Degree in 1958. Bill went on to obtain a Master’s of Science Degree, in 1965, from the Kansas State Teachers College, in Emporia, Kansas. It was during his time in Emporia that Bill would meet his future wife, Jean I. Oltmanns. The two wed on June 10th, 1970, in Hutchinson, Kansas, and then moved on to Newton, Iowa, where they would both spend a number of years teaching. Bill began teaching in Newton's middle school, and would conclude his teaching career, as a media-specialist, at Newton High School. In 1992, Bill and Jean returned to Kansas, where they built a home in McPherson, to be closer to Jean’s family. There they joined St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and were active in the parish for many years, donating time, talent and treasure to various projects. As a lifelong historian, Bill was known to have volunteered his time with the Kansas Historical Society, focusing his efforts on their work along the Santa Fe Trail, in McPherson County. Bill’s other community contributions included: his loyal delivery of “meals on wheels” throughout the McPherson community; his time spent volunteering at the McPherson Senior Center; and his weekly presence and support of the McPherson Public Library. At home, Bill enjoyed spending his time as a Master Gardener, dominoes player, avid reader and lifetime subscriber to numerous periodicals. Bill will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband of 42 years to his wife, Jean; and as a brother, uncle, teacher, good neighbor and friend to many. Bill is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean; his sister, Veronica Melton; and his brother, Larry Silverstrand. Bill is survived by his sister-in law, Alice Silverstrand, of Omaha, Nebraska; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. with Rosary starting at 10:00 on Tuesday, December 7th 2021 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in McPherson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7th 2021 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in McPherson, with Fr. Ben Shockey officiating. Gerald E. “Gerry” Graber, 83, of Hutchinson, died November 28, 2021, at Azria Health Nursing Home, Wichita. He was born September 18, 1938, in Kingman, to Edwin and Edna (Graber) Graber.

Gerry graduated from Pretty Prairie High School, Bethel College, and Emporia State University with a Master’s of Education. He taught for many years at Wiley Elementary and Liberty Junior High School. Gerry helped with farming, harvesting, and driving trucks. He loved to go hunting and loved his dogs.

On August 19, 1960, Gerry married Reta K. Harrison, at Midland Community Church, Nickerson. They shared 53 years together before she passed away on February 10, 2014.

He is survived by: son, Terry Graber (Susana), Richfield, Ohio; daughter, Lavonne Harris (Zac), Valley Center; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brother, Myron Graber (Marchella), Cheney.

Gerry was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Reta Graber.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 3, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary, with Pastor Eric Miller officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Fairlawn Burial Park. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, at Elliott Mortuary.

The Blue Dragons trailed by as many as 13 points, including nine points at halftime, but rallied to defeat the Cowley Tigers 76-75 in a key early Jayhawk Conference clash. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak to the Tigers.

The Blue Dragons improved to 11-0 overall and 5-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. A Top 15 clash is next for Hutchinson as No. 15 Butler comes to the Sports Arena at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Cowley fell to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the KJCCC.

Hutchinson struggled offensively in the opening half, shooting 39.5 percent (15 of 38) in the first half, while the Tigers shot 50 percent (20 of 40), including six 3-point goals. The Blue Dragons trailed 26-13 with 13:26 to play in the half.

Kobe Campbell&nbsp;scored to cap a 7-0 Dragon run to pull Hutchinson within six points, but Cowley maintained its lead and took a 46-37 cushion at halftime.

The largest rally of the season was the 20-point comeback in the final 7 minutes to defeat Clarendon on November 13 in Great Bend.

🏀 Blue Dragons Outlast Cowley in KJCCC Thriller

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—Hutchinson Community College freshman&nbsp;Mya Williams&nbsp;poured in a career-high 31 points to spark a struggling offense as the Blue Dragons earned a key Jayhawk Conference victory over the Cowley Tigers on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.

Williams paced the Blue Dragons to a 63-53 victory over the Tigers, the fourth-straight triumph over Cowley.

Hutchinson improves to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the Jayhawk Conference. Conference co-leader and No. 7-ranked Butler comes to the Sports Arena at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Cowley falls to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in league play.

Williams posted the 33rd 30-point game in team history, becoming the first player since Jada Mickens, who scored 34 against the Bethany College JV on Nov. 1, 2017, to reach the 30-point mark in a game. The last time a 30-point game occurred against an NJCAA Division I opponent was Jamie Patrick's 38 points against Northwest Tech in 2014.

Along the way, Williams became just the 12th Blue Dragon player with at least seven 3-pointers in a contest, the first since&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2021-22/bios/alford_tor-e_0wzz">Tor'e Alford</a>&nbsp;torched the Tigers for eight 3-pointers in a Region VI victory over the Tigers this past April.

Williams hit 7 of 13 shots from distance and 10 of 22 shots overall in her career-high performance. She also had four rebounds, including two put-back buckets in a key fourth-quarter surge that carried the Dragons to the victory.

The Blue Dragons also turned in a tremendous defensive performance, especially in the second half. Hutchinson forced 24 Cowley turnovers which led to a decisive 26-4 advantage in points off turnovers for the Blue Dragons. The Dragons were at a rebounding deficit for most of the game, bur turned that around in the second half, 38-35, and grabbed 13 offensive boards to the Tigers' four.

Trailing 19-18 with 2:59 to play in the period, Williams hit a 3-pointer, Payne scored inside and Williams added a free throw to give the Blue Dragons a 24-19 lead with 18 seconds to play in the half. Cowley looked to carry momentum into halftime, but Cowley's Melena Fromming hit a guarded fade-away 3-pointer at the buzzer to trim the Dragon advantage to 24-22 at halftime.

Dale Lamoine Baerg, 63, of rural Inman, Kansas, passed away at 6:58 AM, Tuesday, November 30th, 2021, at his residence. Dale was born in Newton, Kansas on November 25, 1958, a son of Gerald Dee and Betty Joan (Perry) Baerg. Dale attended Inman Elementary School and graduated from Inman High School, Inman, Kansas in 1977. He then attended Dodge City Community College, Dodge City Kansas. Through the years Dale worked many jobs, but he was most proud of his farming. Dale was a member of the Moose and Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts of America. Dale enjoyed dancing, K-State Football, live music, farming, traveling, mission trips to Guatemala, pool parties and spending time with his friends and family. Dale Lamoine Baerg was united in marriage to Deborah Lynn Ruland in 1978 in Inman, Kansas. Then Dale Lamoine Baerg was united in marriage to Shelly Jean Mullen on Feb. 29, 2020, in Hutchinson, Kansas. Sharon Lynn Ledgerwood, 83, died November 29, 2021, at her home.&nbsp; She was born June 26, 1938, in Carthage, MO, to Earl and Twyla (Coats) Powell.

Sharon graduated from Carterville High School, Carterville, MO, and received her Associates Degree in Nursing from Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; Her strong-will and sense of humor served her well, working as a registered nurse in a variety of medical settings.&nbsp; Sharon worked for physicians, as a state surveyor, in home health, and was the first Director of Nursing for what was formerly Golden Plains Nursing Home.&nbsp; She retired as the assistant administrator for the Reno County Health Department. Sharon’s love for nursing inspired her daughter, Jami, as well as her granddaughters, Kristin, Lyndsey, and great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn, to choose nursing as their career path. Sharon’s love of nursing was second though to her love for her grandchildren; they were everything to her, and Sharon held a special bond with each one of them.

On November 8, 1975, she married Victor Ledgerwood, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; He died July 28, 2021, after they shared almost 46 years of marriage.

Sharon is survived by:&nbsp; children, Jami Martin (Mark), Robert Kennedy (Patricia), all of Hutchinson; bonus daughters and son, Vickie Van Hoose, Julie White (Steve), and Michael Ledgerwood (Sheila); grandchildren, Andrew Brill, Joshua Schneithorst, Lyndsey Clune (Frank), Ashley Martin, Kristin Watts (Thomas), and Brooke Koehn (Trenton); great-grandchildren, Zane Clune, Kynsley Johnson, Gage Clune, Kaitlyn Hill (Lee), Skyley, Fallon, Rosslyn, Hartley, Kaden, and Zairyck Brill, Alexis and Laila Schneithorst, Ryley and Cooper Watts, and Kaelen and Makaila Koehn; great-great-grandson, Malakai Hill; numerous bonus grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays, KS in 1945 and graduated from Salt City Business College in 1949 with a degree in accounting. On October 2, 1950, Norman married Lucille Biggs at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Hutchinson. Norman enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. Norman was the owner of Midwest Feed Company for over 43 years. After that, he worked for the Kansas State Fair for over 20 years. He was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; Lucille; a grandson, Steven Karlin; siblings, Mildred Schmeidler, Helen Koester, Rita Mae Befort and Marvin Karlin. Marlyne “Mernie” Nininger, 103, died November 25 (Thanksgiving Day), 2021. She was born Marlyne Charlotte Neel, April 13, 1918, in Windom, Kansas, the third of five children, to Walter and Edna (Bengston) Neel. &nbsp;

Mernie graduated from Hutchinson High School, where she met Lawrence “Larry” Nininger in chemistry class. They were married October 14, 1939, and shared nearly 68 years of marriage. She earned a degree in medical records, with training in nursing from Hutchinson Community College.

After living briefly in Tulsa, and Chicago, Mernie and Larry became longtime Hutchinson area residents, retiring after 36 years of farming, and moving to Buena Vista, CO, in 1985.&nbsp; They returned to Hutchinson in 2005.&nbsp; Mernie was a charter member of Nickerson “Cameo Club”, PEO Chapter Q, helped found PEO Chapter DL in Buena Vista, and volunteered at Hospice House and the Hutchinson Public Library.&nbsp; She was involved in creating community and hospitality wherever she was; Mernie’s faith, family, friends (and a quantity of good food for all) were uppermost.

Mernie is survived by: son, Jerry Nininger (Debbie) of Hutchinson; daughter, Judy Edmands (Clay) of Buena Vista, CO; grandchildren, Scott Edmands (Debra), Elise Lowry (Tom), Jesse Nininger (Rebecca), Clifford Nininger (Lacey), Anna Nininger, and Katy Nininger; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, Ailiff and Dr. Wilbur Neel; and sisters, Moretha Lyman and Ineta Studebaker; her husband Larry; and a grandson, Todd Edmands.

Private graveside service is planned at Memorial Park Cemetery.&nbsp; Friends may visit Elliott Mortuary from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, November 29, 2021.&nbsp; The family will be present to greet friends from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;&nbsp; A “Celebration of Life” service will be planned for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Victory Village Christian Academy, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS&nbsp; 67501.&nbsp;

We have come to the end of The Decades. We hope you have enjoyed this look back as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you.&nbsp;

We'd like to thank Steve Harmon for letting us use the incredible photos from his collection, the Reno County Museum for their work in sharing ideas, and especially the staff in the Reference Services Department of the Hutchinson Public Library who were as enthusiastic to help with this project as we were to bring it to you. The ideas from this series came from a number of newspapers that have come and gone along with archives from Eagle Radio and the Hutchinson News, the book "The Hutchinson Spirit" from the library and others. We are probably missing some names of others who helped, for which we apologize.&nbsp;

This project started back in the first week of July and has progressed through the summer and into the fall. We have probably missed so many things that were important to people in Hutchinson and Reno County, but we tried to make sure we got as much of the information as possible. We would simply run out of room if we tried to list everything. Most of all, we’d like to say "thank you" to you, our readers, who have made The Decades one of the most popular features for Hutch Post. This feature will stay with Hutch Post for you to look back on and enjoy with others who might have missed them.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — We have come to the end of The Decades as we look back from 2010 to the present. Siemens rolls out its first nacelle at the new plant, but market volatility would force the company to lay off workers later. The county begins working hard to find a remedy for the overcrowding at the county jail. New leadership comes on board for both the police and fire departments. A longtime family-owned manufacturer is sold and a high-profile murder case begins. A portion of Emerson Carey’s development in the southeast part of the city is condemned and abandoned. The longtime president of Hutchinson Community College steps down, as does the longtime GM of the Kansas State Fair. Both the city and county see leadership changes and a major facelift comes to the Hutchinson Sports Arena. That and more in one last look at The Decades.

2010: Siemens rolls out its first nacelle from the Hutchinson Facility.

Longtime HPD Detective Clay Rothe retires from the force.

Collins Bus is certified by state and federal safety officials as a Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program.

The city approves a tax plan that moves Hutch Rec out from under the school district's taxing authority to the city. The two entities come together to help make the city’s athletic facilities better for tournaments and other activities.

The county commission denies Buhler’s request for a federal tax break program. It's the same proposal they denied for Haven and South Hutchinson.&nbsp;

The county commission passes an ordinance prohibiting gunfire down in the bed of the Arkansas River after numerous complaints near Nickerson.

L’Oréal purchases Peels Beauty Supply.

2011:&nbsp;Another family-owned manufacturer is purchased as Krause Mfg. is purchased by Kuhn Mfg. Krause opened in Hutchinson in 1916.

An early-morning fire destroys the studios of Ad Astra Radio.

After a very unpopular name change, Promise Regional Medical Center is renamed again, this time to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp;

In a case of mistaken identity, Jennifer Heckel is murdered. William Craig Jr. and Charles Logsdon are convicted. Logsdon is still fighting his conviction to this day.

2012:&nbsp;Following a guilty verdict, Charles Logsdon is sentenced to 73-years in prison for the murder of Jennifer Heckel.

After years of planning and construction, the new K-61 four lane project from Hutchinson to McPherson is opened.

Two years after opening, Siemens announces it is laying off more than 60% of its workforce: 110 temporary workers and 145 full-time employees are laid off. Over the years, the lost jobs would come back.

Drought and summer heat bake the area as the temperature rises above 110 for several days. The heat lasts into September.

In what was a painful beginning to a long list of store closings in the area, Dillard’s closed.&nbsp;

The old Red Lobster building is razed. It's now the site of Pizza Ranch.

An organization sues the City of Buhler for its welcome signs that say: "Traditional Values. Progressive Ideas."

The city backs an effort to renovate the Landmark Hotel, but the request for state funding is denied. The building still sits empty.

The city gives up efforts to save the boathouse at Carey Park. The building is torn down.

Jason Ball becomes the new president of the Chamber of Commerce.

2013:&nbsp;Said to be the home of Superman, a proclamation is presented naming Hutchinson "Smallville" for a day.

A 14-year-old sets fire to his family home killing his mother and sister. After a long trial and many legal motions, Samuel Vonachen is convicted of two counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

The Kansas State Fair celebrates 100 years.

An announcement is made that the Wiley Building will be completely renovated. The building is turned into an apartment complex and is also the home office of TECH.

The Kansas Underground Salt Museum is renamed Strataca.

Ed Berger resigns as president of Hutchinson Community College. He later wins a seat in the State Senate.

After a great run of success at HHS, football coach Randy Dreiling resigns to take a job in Kansas City.

A major hail storm hits the city's northeast side. Windows at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center are blown out along with other damage at the mall, Walmart, Lowe’s and Conklin Cars.&nbsp;

The public approves a $28.9 million bond issue to build a new jail. The sales tax used to fund the jail is paid off early.

The Hutchinson City Council rejects a proposal for a new Dollar General to be built at the corner of 11th and Main.

Reno County Emergency Management Director Bill Guy retires.

Three Hutchinson police officers are terminated in connection with a sexual harassment claim made by a motorist who was pulled over for DUI.

2014:&nbsp;Another major retailer closes as Sears shuts its doors at the mall.

The city proposes a .35% sales tax to make more than $29 million in renovations to the Hutchinson Sports Arena.&nbsp;

The city creates a special taxing district to help renovate the mall. RockStep Capital then purchases the mall for $14.5 million.

Rift grows between landlords and the city over how to deal with rundown rental property.

The Chamber of Commerce announces that Mervis Rail will build a major railcar repair facility just south of Siemens. When the oil boom ends, Mervis decides to pull out of the deal.

Construction of the Reno County Correctional Facility begins.

Billy Craig enters a plea to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the Jennifer Heckel murder case.

Longtime Hutchinson News reporter and bail bondsman Dwight Jurgens is arrested and goes to trial. Jurgens is accused of offering sexual favors in exchange for lower bonds for his clients.

Dave Dillon retires as president of Kroger.

2015:&nbsp;Adding to the tornadoes Kansas has to deal with, the area begins to be rattled by earthquakes connected to deep disposal wells near the Oklahoma border.

After closing, then reopening, the Haven School District closes the Mt. Hope School for good.

The unpopular decision is made to end all ATV and motorcycle riding in the Arkansas River bed.

A storm moving southwest does the unexpected and forms a tornado near Nickerson. With the absence of rain in the area and the slow-moving nature of the storm, hundreds flock out into the countryside to watch, tying up traffic and cell phone service.

Denny Stoecklein resigns as GM of the Kansas State Fair.

After a long renovation process, the Wiley Plaza opens.

The Hutch Rec takes over operations of Fun Valley. Tournaments come back to the popular complex.

Voters approve the sales tax for Sports Arena renovation.
