OKLAHOMA CITY – Sophomore Ben Partridge finished strong to help put the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team within striking distance after one round of the Oklahoma Christian Broncho Invitational on Monday at Gailardia Country Club.

Cold weather postponed the start to Hutchison’s first spring tournament of the 2022 season on Monday and the tournament was shortened to 36 holes. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday morning.

The Blue Dragons were in sixth place after 12 holes on Monday and played a collective 6-under par to jump into second place after the first round at 302. The Blue Dragons trail Southwestern Christian University by four strokes.

Leading the way was the All-American and defending NJCAA national champion Partridge, who fought back from 5-over par with five birdies in his last six holes played on Monday. Partridge is in a three-way for second at even-par 72.

Oklahoma State’s Tiger Christensen leads the individual standings after a 5-under 67 on Monday.

All-American Harry Crockett is the only other Blue Dragon in the Top 10, tied for eighth at 2-over 74. Crockett had 15 pars, two bogeys and one birdie, which came on the 17th hole played on Monday.

Freshmen Dominic Clemons and Blake Saffel and sophomore Addison Alonzo are all tied for 27th at 6-over 78.

Freshman Finn Nelson is playing as an individual and his 79th after an opening-round 94 on Monday.

President Joe Biden called for an increase in Pell Grants in his 2022 State of the Union. Hutchinson Community College President Carter File believes an expansion may be worthwhile.

"The premiere flagship program in higher education to help students is the Pell Grant," File said. "I think that they could achieve what they're trying to achieve by increasing the Pell Grant eligibility, rather than having an entirely new program."

The maximum Federal Pell Grant award is $6,495 for the 2022–23 award year. 

"You are given a Pell Grant based upon what your EFC is, your Expected Family Contribution," File said. "If they would just expand the EFC, it would capture more community college students, because they would now fall under the Pell Grant guidelines."

File noted that the Promise Act in Kansas is a real help to students.

"One of the problems with Pell Grants is they look back on what you earned," File said. "If you want to stop working and go to college if you're in your mid-twenties to mid-thirties, you're earning enough money that you don't qualify for Pell so the first year, it would be difficult."

The Promise Act is a last dollar scholarship, so it fills in where financial aid doesn't for those with a family income of $100,000 or less.

Kenneth Orville “KO” Bircher, 95, died peacefully March 2, 2022, at Hester Care Center.&nbsp; He was born August 23, 1926, in rural Ellsworth County, to Walter G. and Bessie R. (Hudson) Bircher.

KO graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1945, and Bethany College in 1950.&nbsp; He worked for various companies as an accountant, and helped start the Hutchinson Drummer Boy Restaurant franchise in the early 1970’s.&nbsp; In addition, KO was involved with SCORE and served as the Director of Jets for the Sky Ryders Drum &amp; Bugle Corps.&nbsp; After retirement, he helped renovate the Fox Theatre, as well as various downtown buildings.&nbsp;

KO served in the United States Army during World War II.&nbsp; He was a member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, and appreciated the opportunity to go on the Kansas Honor Flight.&nbsp;&nbsp; Music was important in the Bircher household, and KO was a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and sang with the Salt Minors Barbershop Chorus and church choir.&nbsp; He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On May 28, 1948, he married Geraldine E. “Gerry” Stratton, in Walton, KS.&nbsp; They shared almost 74 years of marriage.

KO is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Gerry of Hutchinson; children, Diane Shirack (Mike) of Centennial, CO, Joan Gibson (Roger) of Wichita, Gene Bircher (Jennifer) of &nbsp;Longmont, CO, Paula Payton (Greg) of Hutchinson, and Craig Bircher (Mary) of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Chad Shirack (Lora), Amanda Herndon (Dustin), Curtis Gibson (Kara), Kinzie Flowers (James), Bailey Lardes (Doug), Will Bircher (Morgan), Morgan Starkweather (James), Grady Payton (Brooke), Samantha Rose, Crosby Branham (Cody), Dr. Walter G. Bircher, and Dr. Josie Bircher; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Phillip, Rolland, Don, and John Bircher.

Cremation has taken place and a private service will be held. Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Kansas Honor Flight, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS&nbsp; 67501.

Roger attended school in Hutchinson, KS, and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1967.&nbsp; Following graduation, he joined the United States Navy and served from 1967 to 1971.&nbsp; After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to Wichita, KS, to go to college on the GI Bill.&nbsp; Roger met Marilyn Beatrice Carpenter and they were married on August 31, 1974.&nbsp; Shortly after they moved to Kansas City, MO, he began working as a computer programmer for Jackson County Court in Kansas City, MO.&nbsp; Roger then worked as a programmer for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline, and was transferred to Houston, TX, in 1988.&nbsp; Within two years, Duke Energy bought out Panhandle Eastern Pipeline and he worked for them until he was laid off, but Roger decided to remain in Houston and had lived there ever since.&nbsp; He married Adela Gallardo in 1992.&nbsp; Roger was also a substitute teacher in the Cypress-Cyfair School District.

He is survived by:&nbsp; his sister, Ramona (Ralph) Shepherd of Hutchinson, KS; nephews, Robert ‘Robbie’ (Sarah) Shepherd of Hutchinson, KS, and Ryan Shepherd of Wichita, KS; great-niece, Rylie Paige Shepherd of Derby, KS; Suzanne Schott-McElheney of Dallas, TX; ex-wife, Adela Schott of Houston, TX; and stepchildren, Noemi (Gene) Pena of Wellington, TX, Bryan (Jessica) Moreno of San Diego, CA, and Sandy Jasso of Houston, TX.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—Five more teams joined Roane State to &nbsp;punched their tickets to this years NJCAA Men's D1 National Tournament to be held in Hutchinson March 14-19.

John A. Logan (29-3) out of Region 24 in Illinois defeated Shawnee 90-78 to qualify.&nbsp; Shawnee had defeated Vincennes University in the quarter finals 65-55.&nbsp; Vincennes suffered through their worst season in 68 years to finish at 12-19.

Shelton State out of the South District and Region 22 defeated Wallace State 89-67.&nbsp; Shelton State is 29-4 and is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Caldwell Tech (25-7) out of Region 10 defeated USC Salkahatchie 68-66 to punch their ticket to the dance.

Harcum, Pennsylvania (30-2) defeated Hagerstown 79-64 in Region 19.

South Georgia Tech, Georgia &nbsp;(22-11) defeated Georgia Highland 87-84 to represent Region 17.

Six Women's D1 Teams have qualified for the NJCAA Women's D1 Championship that will be played in Lubbock, Texas March 16-21.

Those teams are Walters State (19-6) out of Tennessee, Wabash Valley, Illinois (28-1), Monroe College, NY (14-14), College of Southern Idaho (30-2), Shelton State, Alabama (29-1) and Arizona Western (29-2)

Roger Dwight Erteld, 73, of Buhler, died March 2, 2022, at his home. He was born July 30, 1948, in Des Moines, IA, to Dwight D. and Vera C. (Miller) Erteld.

Roger graduated from Iowa Mennonite School in 1966, attended Calvary Bible College, and graduated from Hesston College in 1968. He owned his own business, Roger Erteld Construction, for 47 years. Roger was a devoted follower of Jesus with an insatiable desire to study God’s Word. He was very active in Young at Heart Ministries.

On June 18, 1968, Roger married Kathleen “Kathy” Yoder, in Parnell, IA.&nbsp; She survives.

Also surviving are: daughters, Sharon Entz (Leland) of Whitewater, Wendy Bost (Kevin) of Overland Park; and grandchildren, Becca Mellema (Matt), David Entz, and Leah Entz.

A private family burial will be held in Buhler cemetery. A celebration of Roger’s life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Union Valley Bible Church, 1916 E. 30th&nbsp;Ave., Hutchinson, with Pastor Steve Hodgson officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the church’s website.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2022, at the church.

Seniors Thaddaeus Blakley and Micah Wenger entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2020 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The National Merit Scholarship competition is highly selective, making Blakely and Wenger representative of less than 1 percent of each state’s high school seniors.

As finalists, Blakley and Wenger are eligible for three types of scholarships offered by the National Merit Scholarship Program for students pursuing post-secondary education immediately following high school. However, both seniors have decided to take gap years following graduation to focus on volunteer work and studying abroad before beginning college. Blakley and Wenger both say the title of National Merit Finalist will give them an edge in the college application and scholarship process when they begin applying to schools.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual competition that recognizes academic excellence in high school students. The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which dates back to 1955.

HHS students named National Merit Finalists

Linda Marie Ediger, 80, of McPherson, passed away at 12:03 p.m., Monday, February 28th, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Sedgwick County. Linda was born in Hutchinson, on March 23, 1941, a daughter of the late Pearl Fern Dreibelbis and Lynn W. Gisel. Linda attended Buhler grade schools and graduated from Buhler High School, Buhler, in 1959. Linda Marie Gisel was united in marriage to LaVon Keith Ediger on July 29, 1960 at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church Inman.&nbsp; The young couple established their first home together in North Newton, where LaVon attended Bethel College and Linda Hesston Manufacturing. The couple moved to Aurora, Colorado for two years where LaVon provided alternative service at Denver General Hospital and Linda was an assistant apartment manager.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two sons at this time, Alan and Ron.&nbsp; The family then moved to Brookville, for two years, where LaVon was a school teacher/coach and Linda raised the boys.&nbsp; The family then moved to Clay Center, for six years where LaVon was a teacher/coach and where their daughter Lisa was born.&nbsp; The family then moved to Topeka, where LaVon was a department manager of a lumber company.&nbsp; In 1974 the family moved to McPherson and started Stewart - Ediger Construction where Linda served as the secretary. Linda was a member of First Mennonite Church of McPherson, where she served in various capacities for many years. Linda was a homemaker and took great pride in providing support for her family in this manner. Linda greatly enjoyed her family, grandkids, music, crafts of all kinds, sewing, working in her flower garden, keeping family photo albums and volunteering for many things that provided support for others.&nbsp; She was a member of EHU-FCE and participated in bowling leagues for many years. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of over 60 years, LaVon Ediger, of McPherson; her children, Alan Ediger (Kaylene), of Goshen, Indiana, Ron Ediger (Lori), of McPherson, and Lisa Talcott (Nathan), of Halstead; her siblings, Dick Gisel (Jan), of Hutchinson, Jean Archer (Mike), of South Lake, Texas, Dennis Gisel, (Dee), of Lawrence; her four grandchildren, Tawny King, Lucas Ediger, Emily Ediger, and Ellea Ediger; and step grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Linda was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Weston Ediger; and a sister; Betty Malone and her husband Bud. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at Glidden - Ediger Chapel in McPherson. The celebration service will be at 10:30 am on Friday, March&nbsp;4, 2022 at the First Mennonite Church, McPherson with Pastor Willmar Harder officiating. Linda Marie Ediger, 80, of McPherson, passed away at 12:03 p.m., Monday, February 28th, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Sedgwick County. Linda was born in Hutchinson, on March 23, 1941, a daughter of the late Pearl Fern Dreibelbis and Lynn W. Gisel. Linda attended Buhler grade schools and graduated from Buhler High School, Buhler, in 1959. Linda Marie Gisel was united in marriage to LaVon Keith Ediger on July 29, 1960 at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church Inman.&nbsp; The young couple established their first home together in North Newton, where LaVon attended Bethel College and Linda Hesston Manufacturing. The couple moved to Aurora, Colorado for two years where LaVon provided alternative service at Denver General Hospital and Linda was an assistant apartment manager.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two sons at this time, Alan and Ron.&nbsp; The family then moved to Brookville, for two years, where LaVon was a school teacher/coach and Linda raised the boys.&nbsp; The family then moved to Clay Center, for six years where LaVon was a teacher/coach and where their daughter Lisa was born.&nbsp; The family then moved to Topeka, where LaVon was a department manager of a lumber company.&nbsp; In 1974 the family moved to McPherson and started Stewart - Ediger Construction where Linda served as the secretary. Linda was a member of First Mennonite Church of McPherson, where she served in various capacities for many years. Linda was a homemaker and took great pride in providing support for her family in this manner. Linda greatly enjoyed her family, grandkids, music, crafts of all kinds, sewing, working in her flower garden, keeping family photo albums and volunteering for many things that provided support for others.&nbsp; She was a member of EHU-FCE and participated in bowling leagues for many years. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of over 60 years, LaVon Ediger, of McPherson; her children, Alan Ediger (Kaylene), of Goshen, Indiana, Ron Ediger (Lori), of McPherson, and Lisa Talcott (Nathan), of Halstead; her siblings, Dick Gisel (Jan), of Hutchinson, Jean Archer (Mike), of South Lake, Texas, Dennis Gisel, (Dee), of Lawrence; her four grandchildren, Tawny King, Lucas Ediger, Emily Ediger, and Ellea Ediger; and step grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Linda was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Weston Ediger; and a sister; Betty Malone and her husband Bud. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at Glidden - Ediger Chapel in McPherson. The celebration service will be at 10:30 am on Friday, March&nbsp;4, 2022 at the First Mennonite Church, McPherson with Pastor Willmar Harder officiating. Eagle Media Hutchinson Sports Director Glen Grunwald has been selected by the Kansas Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association to be their 2021-2022 Sportscaster of the Year. Grunwald was nominated by Hutchinson High School. 

The voice of the Hutch High Salthawks and HutchCC Blue Dragons will be presented the Sportscaster of the Year award at the KIAAA annual awards banquet to be held at the Kansas Star Casino Convention Center in Mulvane March 26th.

Grunwald started his broadcasting career with KANS in Larned, Kansas in 1985 as a hobby and as a favor to a friend that owned the local radio station. In 1990, Barton Community College named him as their broadcast voice, and he served as the voice of Barton Cougar basketball and volleyball until Hutchinson Community College and Eagle Media Hutchinson came calling in 1998. 

Glen joined longtime local broadcaster Rusty Hilst in the booth and assisted Hilst with Football and handled the play-by-play duties for HutchCC basketball on KHUT in Hutchinson. In 2010, Glen joined the Hutch High broadcast team and served as sideline reporter for football. He also helped coordinate the football and basketball video streaming of games home and away.

When Hilst retired in 2019, Grunwald was named Sports Director for the Eagle Media Stations and has served in that capacity since then.

Glen retired from the Pharmaceutical Industry after 30 years with GlaxoSmithKline in 2010. In addition to his sportscasting, Grunwald is a regular member of the KWBW Morning Show.

In 2017, Grunwald received the Hod Humiston Award from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) which is given annually to a Kansas Broadcaster who has made significant contributions to the field of sports broadcasting as well as work within the community. Glen was a member of the Kansas Special Olympics board of directors for 42 years and serves as a board member emeritus for the organization. He also received the KSHSAA Oscar Stauffer Award in 2020. The Stauffer honors a sports broadcaster for their outstanding play-by-play coverage of high school athletics in Kansas.

Glen lives in Hutchinson with wife Christi Karle-Grunwald, of 27 years. They share 5 daughters and 8 grandchildren.

Grunwald named KIAAA Sportscaster of the Year

Stephen Dale Rhorer, 79, died February 14th, 2022, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. He was born July 24th, 1942, in Hutchinson, to George Rhorer and Violet Hensley Rhorer. A true miracle baby, Steve was born prematurely at barely over two pounds and was frequently reminded by just how lucky he was to have survived.

Steve graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1960. He was a spectacular storyteller and often shared tales from his childhood in Hutchinson. He cherished times visiting with his father at the barbershop, watching his mother work at the dairy, and often recollected the paper route he worked which earned him enough spending money for sodas, candy and vinyl records. It was on this paper route that he first heard blues music, an event that would forever transform Steve into a lifelong blues fanatic. Throughout his life, Steve attended many concerts and festivals celebrating the blues, including a new-to-the-scene James Brown at the Apollo Theatre in New York and Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf in Chicago. He was also an avid music collector.

As a youth, Steve was involved in the Boy Scouts and would go on to become an Eagle Scout. As a young man, Steve attended Hutchinson Community College before joining the Air Force, and finally went on to finish a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Kansas. He was studious and achieved high marks from his professors, taking his education seriously. Steve served in the Air Force from 1962 to 1966, serving in Germany as well as being stationed in Mississippi. When he could get off base, Steve fueled his love of blues music by attending concerts, visiting record stores and absorbing as much southern culture as possible. After his service and graduating from college, Steve went on to become a pharmacist and worked in the profession until retirement. He worked as the head pharmacist at Coberly’s Drug Store for decades and would go above and beyond to meet the needs of his clients.

On October 10th, 1970, he married Barbara Kirkbride in Hutchinson, after falling in love on a blind date. Before the date, Barbara’s friend described Steve as “big, hairy and kind of different”, but despite the unflattering introduction, it was always apparent the two were a perfect pair. The real highlights of Steve’s life included the birth of his children and grandchildren. The family enjoyed many vacations, and not a day passed without love and laughter in the home. Barbara and Steve shared almost 51 years of marriage, and it’s fitting that he left this world to be reunited with her on Valentine’s Day.

Steve was quirky and humorous, and he was sure to open his heart to those he loved. He worked tirelessly without complaint, providing his family with unending love and support. He absolutely lit up around his grandchildren, soaking in the joys of being witness to their experiences.

There are countless ways that Steve will be missed, but we hope you’ll celebrate his life by finding joy in the simple pleasures: a quite walk finding forgotten treasures, telling stories, and of course listening to music that moves your soul.

Steve is survived by his son, Kirk Rhorer (Patti Beedles) of Lawrence; daughter, Stephanie Rhorer (Chad King) of Hutchinson; sister, Kris Peel of Hutchinson; and grandchildren, Patience Westby, Jayde Anderson, and Isla Beedles-Rhorer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Violet Rhorer; and sister, Wanda Morton.

WACO, Texas – For the second-straight day, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team had No. 1 McLennan Community College on the ropes.

For the second-straight day, the Highlanders exploded in the eighth inning and came back to defeat Hutchinson and sweep the three-game series.

The Blue Dragons led by five runs at the seventh-inning stretch, but the Highlanders rallied to defeat Hutchinson 9-7 on Monday at Bosque River Ballpark.

Hutchinson falls to 4-5 overall heading into the 2022 home opener against Coffeyville in a doubleheader on Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field. McLennan (10-5) was the preseason No. 1 team in the NJCAA this season, but dropped to No. 8 in the first regular-season poll, which was released during the game.

Sophomore Ben McLaughlin had four RBIs in going 3 for 5 with a double and home run. Jack Torosian was 2 for 5 for the Blue Dragons, who out-hit McLennan 9-7.

McLaughlin gave the Blue Dragons a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, to right field. The Dragons extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Sterling Sutcliffe scored on a Cade Baker double.

Leading 3-2 after six innings, the Blue Dragons erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh. McLaughlin drove in Bryce Logan and Torosian with a double down the right-field line. McLaughlin later scored on a balk. The Dragons took a 7-2 lead when Booga de la Garza singled home Kael Babin.

McLennan scored a single run in the seventh and then took advantage of three walks, two hit batsmen an error and a balk as the Highlanders scored six runs on just two hits in the eighth inning to take a 9-7 lead.

Reed Scott (0-1) was the losing pitcher for the Blue Dragons. Ben Dandelet started and worked the first four innings. He struck out two and allowed two hits and one walk.

The Blue Dragons on Sunday were haunted by a rough eighth inning when the carried and 2-1 lead and the Highlanders got a Cole Fontenelle eighth inning grand slam for a 5-2 victory.

Baseball: No. 1 beats HutchCC again

Margaret Ellen Hale, 79, died February 26, 2022, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. She was born November 8, 1942, in Hutchinson, to Jay and Betty (Ellis) Reed.

Margaret graduated from Nickerson High School in 1960, attended Hutchinson Community College, and graduated from Sydney’s Beauty College. She owned her own beauty shop, “Hair by Margaret”, for many years. Margaret’s greatest joys in life were her grandchildren and her pets.

In February 1967, Margaret married Palmer Welch in Oklahoma. They later divorced. On October 1, 1976, she married Roy Hale Jr., in Hutchinson. He died October 29, 2014.

Margaret is survived by: her children, Colleen Thode (Troy) of Partridge, Blake Welch (Lori Christensen), Brannon Welch (Tanya), Kelly Hale (Shannon), all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Josh Dreiling (Christen), Jake Dreiling (Candice), Alisha Dreiling, Amber Dreiling, Keegan Hale, Brookelyn Hale, Devon Welch, Alexia Welch, Trevor Thrash; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Jones (Charles) of Greenwood, MO; Jaylene Reed of Kingman; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Shellie Hughes; and grandsons, Travis Dreiling and Travis Thrash.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2022, at Fairlawn Burial Park, 2401 Carey Blvd., Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with family present from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.

Matchups set for Tuesday Region VI Quarterfinals

WACO, Texas – The Hutchinson Community College baseball team was nearly no-hit in Game 1 and let a late lead slip away in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the top-ranked junior college baseball team in the nation on Sunday.

The Blue Dragons lost the first two games of a three-game series with No. 1 McLennan 8-0 and 5-2 at Bosque River Ballpark. The final game of the series will be at Noon on Monday.

The Blue Dragons fall to 4-4 overall, McLennan is 9-5-1 overall.

The Blue Dragons took a 2-1 lead into the eighth when the Highlanders grabbed the lead on one swing of the bat when Cole Fontenelle hit a line-drive grand slam to right field to give McClennan a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Blue Dragons scored single runs in the third and fifth innings.

With two out in the third, Jack Torosian was hit with a pitch and took second on a Ben McLaughlin single. Torosian then scored on a Jon Jenkins single to right field for a 1-0 lead. McClennan immediate tied the game in the bottom of the third with a triple and RBI groundout.

Kael Babin led off the fifth inning with a walk. He then stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball for a 2-1 lead.

The Dragons missed a great scoring chance in the seventh when Bryce Logan and Daniel Bebee started the inning with a single and walk, respectively, and moved up to third on a Babin sacrifice bunt. The Dragons, who stranded eight runners on base, left Logan and Bebee in scoring position.

Hutchinson starting pitcher Jack Whitlock had a strong start in getting a no decision. Whitlock went six full innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run with a walk and three strikeouts.

Chase Torkelson (1-1) suffered the loss with two innings of work

McLennan starter Will Carsten carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the Highlanders’ 8-0 victory in Game 1.

With one out in the seventh, Jenkins singled to right field to break up the no-hit bid. Carsten tossed a complete game, going seven innings and striking out 11. Carsten retired 14 Dragons in a row before Jenkins’ single. The only other baserunners for the Blue Dragons were McLaughlin in the first (hit by pitch) and Cade Baker in the second (error)

Jackson Blue (1-2) worked just 1 1-3 inning allowing just one hit, but six earned runs and four walks. Ryan Schlotzhauer went 2-3 innings.

Michael Uhler worked four innings shutout innings with three strikeouts. HE allowed only two walks and one hit batsmen and coaxed a pair of double plays.

Steven Wayne Owens, 57, of Hutchinson, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 25, 2022, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born March 4, 1964, in Albuquerque, NM, to William L. and Peggy D. (Alexander) Owens.

Steve graduated from Lyons High School in 1982 and attended Hutchinson Community College. He worked as a truck driver for Groendyke and JACAM for many years. Steve loved watching and playing sports of all kinds and was a diehard OU Sooners fan. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Steve was of the Christian faith and had a strong relationship with Jesus.

On May 26, 1984, he married his high school sweetheart, Sandra D. Simms, in Lyons. She survives.

Also surviving are: his parents, Bill and Peggy Owens of Burrton; children, Brian Owens of Wichita, Tarah Bartlett (Tim) of Fort Worth, TX, Danny Owens (Jenna) of Hutchinson; siblings, William “Billy” Owens Jr. (Susan) of Adamsville, TN, Martin Owens (Dianne) of Riverside, CA, Christell Pinkston (Arlie) of Hutchinson, Jarrett Owens of Ottawa, KS, April Owens (Jeffrey Guerrero) of Hutchinson, Kurt Owens (Jenny) of Belle Plaine, MN; grandchildren, Brian Owens II, Teagan Bartlett, Tatum Bartlett, Olivia Owens, Bennett Owens; and numerous extended family members.

Lee Pownell, 73, passed away peacefully – surrounded by family and toe tappin’ to Johnny Cash – on February 24, 2022, in Newton. Lee was born the first (and rowdiest) of three boys to Milton and Mary Pownell on August 10, 1948, at Halstead Hospital in Halstead. Lee attended Halstead High School in Halstead, but, like any good rebel, he made sure to get kicked out. (Luckily for his family, although he never did learn to ask for permission, he eventually learned to ask for forgiveness.) Lee went on to obtain an Associate of Science degree from Hutchinson Junior College in Hutchinson, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Wichita State University in Wichita.

Lee was a true-blue country boy who was blessed with a genius-level IQ and a stubborn but tenacious spirit. Lee enjoyed Kansas fall weather, the Kansas Jayhawks, the mountains in the West, chopping firewood, building or repairing anything, big red barns, wildlife (especially wolves), classic country music, Westerns, and – especially – his own (many) garages. Lee looked forward to the Kansas autumn auction season every year, and, even if he bought a little too much, it was always astonishingly organized in the incredible double-decker garage that he designed himself.

Notwithstanding his enjoyment of the outdoors, as a young man, Lee had the vision to see that computers were the future. Using his ability to teach himself anything, Lee became an early computer programmer in the 1980s; his computer-programming career spanned for decades, and he worked at both Farmland Industries in Hutchinson, KS, and his alma mater, Wichita State University. Lee also taught himself auto mechanics, much to the dismay of his daughters (as there was never an excuse to buy a new car).

Lee had the good fortune to meet the beautiful Barbara – his wife of more than 50 years – while draggin’ Main Street in Newton in the 1960s. Lee spotted Barbara in the moonlight, hard at work sweeping the lot at A&amp;W Drive In, and he took a chance and asked her for a date. She agreed to one date, but Lee knew he had to double down (and he also knew there was no way he could show up to take Otto’s daughter out on a date on a motorcycle), and so he made sure to buy a brand-new Oldsmobile the next day. Lee and Barbara were blessed with two spunky daughters, Jessy and Katie, who traveled the world but would always take the dirt roads back home to see his newest additions to the garagestead.

Lee is survived by wife Barbara Dalke Pownell, of Newton; daughter Jessica Leigh (Camilo), of Tampa, FL; daughter Katherine Michelle (Kartheek), of San Francisco, CA; brother David (Helene), of Manhattan, KS; sister-in-law Pamela (Victor) Garcia, of Newton; and sister-in-law Ruth Jacob of Halstead.

Lee was preceded in death by father Milton Pownell, mother Mary Clupny Pownell, brother John Pownell, father- and mother-in-law Otto Dalke and Wilma Welty Dalke, and brother-in-law Michael Dalke.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Seventeen Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) residents were recently named to the President’s Honor Roll, with another nine named to the Vice President’s Honor Roll, for classes taken at Hutchinson Community College throughout 2020 and 2021.

“Even under the best academic conditions, this would be a noteworthy achievement,” Kansas Secretary of Corrections Jeff Zmuda said. “But to do so while a resident in a correctional facility is a true indication of personal discipline and commitment.”

Participating in college programs while incarcerated can make the difference to an individual’s success upon release. While many factors contribute to that success, finding a steady job that pays a livable wage is critical.

“We are beginning to see more and more success stories as our programs increase and more residents participate,” Zmuda said.

Education programs are available at all Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) facilities, though specific programs vary by location. For the Spring 2022 semester, approximately 60 HCF residents are enrolled in 14 different classes through the community college. All instruction is delivered at the facility, with additional resources available online using APDS (American Prison Data Systems) tablets.

HutchCC offers an Associate of Applied Science Technical Studies degree at the correctional facility, consisting of 60 hours of college programming. Included in those hours are trade classes in HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical and Carpentry, plus several business classes and electives such as Fundamentals of Sociology and Intro to Psychology.

“I am hearing very encouraging remarks from the residents in our classes and we have a growing waitlist,” Cindy Rowland, HutchCC education coordinator for the correctional facility said. “We have met with our private industry employers who are supportive of working with us so the men can keep their jobs and attend school at the same time.”

Residents pay tuition to take classes and can receive support through U.S. Department of Education Second Chance Pell Grants.

Honor Roll students named at HCF

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A group of students of USD 308’s Magnet School at Allen placed well Thursday in the KidWind competition held at Hutchinson Community College.

The team of Kruz Hernandez, Zoey Schletzbaum, Dalton Urban, Liam Clark and Gatlin Loepp finished in second place and will move on to the state competition.

The regional competition featured students from across south-central Kansas constructing and testing their own wind turbine. After registering for KidWind, the teams at Allen partnered with the Kansas Energy Program to receive wind turbines, generators, wind tunnels and other supplies to prepare for the competition.&nbsp;

Teachers Keith Gable and Hannah Schletzbaum served as coaches for the student teams, working with them over the last three weeks to learn about wind turbines, practice teamwork, and sharpen their public speaking skills.

The state competition will be held in April

USD 308 students place well at KidWind competition

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) recently recognized eight students for completing the Certified Nurse Aide program.

Medical science instructor Erika Barnes noted the students worked hard in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience to complete the required instructional outcomes for certification. The students received a certificate of completion along with a reception with family members in attendance. 

Also in attendance was Hutchinson High School senior Cristian Padilla, who earned his CNA certificate during the 2020-21 school year and served as a student aide for the second trimester class.&nbsp;

The students will now take their state board exams at Hutchinson Community College. The HCTEA offers three Certified Nurse Aide courses each year in partnership with the Hutchinson Community College Allied Health Department.

Paul Ellis Kemp, 81, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2022, surrounded by his family.&nbsp; Born on September 15, 1940, in Kingman, KS, he graduated from Kingman High School before earning a degree from Hutchinson Community College and attending Bethel College.&nbsp; On August 28, 1960, he married Edna Ruth Schwartz at First Mennonite Church in Pretty Prairie where he was a long-time member.&nbsp;

Early in life, Paul developed a zest for the outdoors, which carried over into his adult years.&nbsp; His tales of youthful escapades trapping, fishing, and hunting kept his family entertained for years.&nbsp; Frog hunting with his father and sons was a favorite activity.

Paul worked for many years at Cessna Fluid Power in Hutchinson, followed by a later career farming and ranching near Pretty Prairie.&nbsp; Paul and Edna Ruth ran Kemp Family Farm which has been in the family since 1884, and he especially enjoyed working with his cow/calf herd.&nbsp; Paul also served as Transportation Director for USD 311 in Pretty Prairie and had a major impact on the lives of students and young people who met him.

Paul was an avid collector of antique oil lamps, bells, and other treasures he and Edna Ruth unearthed at estate and garage sales.&nbsp; His good humor and joke-telling were his calling cards with family and friends.

His greatest pride was family, and in later years he took particular pleasure in spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Paul called many lively Bingo games around the Kemp farm dining room table on holidays.

Paul is survived by his wife of 61 years Edna Ruth; sons Todd (Jean), Tim (Deb), and Chris (Kim); nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Hilia Kemp; sisters Juanita Henning and Betty White; and brother Calvin Joe Kemp.

A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Friday, February 25, 2022, at First Mennonite Church of Pretty Prairie.&nbsp; Family visitation will be at the church beginning at 2 pm. Friends may sign the book from 9 am to 5 pm Wednesday and Thursday, at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp;

For this second time this season, Hutchinson Community College freshman pitcher Riley Wertz was named the Jayhawk Conference’s Division I Pitcher of the Week.

Wertz, a freshman from Wichita, had a tremendous weekend out of the bullpen, picking up a pair of victories to move her season record to 3-0. For the week, Wertz threw 9 2-3 scoreless innings with 17 strikeouts and only one walk with two hits allowed.

Against Murray State, Wertz pitched the final 4 2-3 innings in Hutchinson’s 6-4, 10-inning victory over the Aggies. She came into the game with in the sixth with the score tied and two runners in scoring position, getting out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts. For this second time this season, Hutchinson Community College freshman pitcher Riley Wertz was named the Jayhawk Conference’s Division I Pitcher of the Week.Wertz, a freshman from Wichita, had a tremendous weekend out of the bullpen, picking up a pair of victories to move her season record to 3-0. For the week, Wertz threw 9 2-3 scoreless innings with 17 strikeouts and only one walk with two hits allowed.Against Murray State, Wertz pitched the final 4 2-3 innings in Hutchinson’s 6-4, 10-inning victory over the Aggies. She came into the game with in the sixth with the score tied and two runners in scoring position, getting out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts. Evangeline E. Colberg, 91, passed away February 8, 2022, at her home in Lyons.&nbsp; She was born January 3, 1931, in Hollyrood, the daughter of Myrtle and Pete Manwarren.&nbsp; She graduated from Bushton High School and had attended two years of Bethany Nazarene College, Bethany, OK.&nbsp; She married Roger C. Colberg on July 25, 1956, in Chase.&nbsp; She helped him farm in rural Lyons for over 60 years before he passed away on February 22, 2017.&nbsp; She was of the Christian faith.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, DeJuana (Alan) Rudnai, Austin, TX, son Phil Colberg, son Steve Colberg, and daughter Tammy (Garlan) Old, all of Lyons; grandchildren, Ashley (Joshua) Stowers, Texas, Daniel Rudnai, Austin, TX, Dr. Clint (Christy) Colberg, Holton; Krista (Travis) Faith, Manhattan; Cory (Kylie) Colberg, Lyons;&nbsp; Levi (Mandi) Blumanhourst, South Hutchinson; Hollie (Matt) Ankerholz, Lyons; and Jerrehl (Jeremy) Brown, Aurora, CO; great grandchildren, Clayton and Blake Stowers, Carter and Cade Colberg, Kylie (Josh) Wilhelm, Mason and Madison Faith, Emberlee Colberg and Davion Smith, Lane, Bennett, and Miles Blumanhourst, Landon and Shealeigh Ankerholtz, and Jocelyn and Jaron Brown.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Howard Manwarren.

Private family services have taken place.&nbsp; A private family burial was held at Lyons Municipal Cemtery.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Students from Hutchinson STEM Magnet School at Allen are set to compete at the regional KidWind competition.

The competition will be hosted at Hutchinson Community College on Thursday. It will feature students from across South Central Kansas constructing and testing their own wind turbine.

Mandy Putnam, a former 8th&nbsp;grade teacher for USD 308, works for the Engineering Department at Kansas State University, and first shared the opportunity with Allen’s principal, Alma Henry. After registering for KidWind, the teams at Allen partnered with the Kansas Energy Program to receive wind turbines, generators, wind tunnels and other supplies to prepare for the competition.

Teachers Keith Gable and Hannah Schletzbaum have served as coaches for the student teams, working with them over the last three weeks to learn about wind turbines, practice teamwork, and sharpen their public speaking skills.
