Color Green is a Bluegrass/Gospel group based in the Hutchinson/Yoder, KS area, and have been together for about two years. The five members bring many years of musical history into the group. Although they’ve cut out their teeth on Bluegrass &amp; Gospel music, other genres have been added — because they’re too good to pass up! They have been playing locally at craft showed, churches and about wherever anyone will listen!

He has performed at the Reno County Farmer’s Market and Metropolitan Coffee as well as in various venues across the great Sunflower State. Originally formed in 1957 by two Oxford, KS high school students, the group broke up in 1961 as they headed off to college and reformed in 2011 after the band members entered retirement. The trio plays early rock 'n' roll, performing in the style of legendary 1950s and 1960s acts such as the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Johnny Rivers and more!&nbsp;&nbsp;

The judge for the 2024 Hutchinson Art Fair is Martha Fitzwater!

Martha was raised in Winfield, Kansas, and graduated from the University of Kansas with an art education degree in 1971. With twenty-nine years of teaching experience in public schools, Martha taught in seven different school districts in Kansas, including both Inman and Buhler.

After retiring from public schools, Martha taught part-time for seven years at Southwestern College in Winfield and continues to teach at Winfield Arts &amp; Humanities Council.

Martha has served as an art judge for Winfield’s Art in the Park Festival, twice at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival, and the Kansas State Fair professional Art Exhibition. Specializing as a Kansas landscape artist, Martha works primarily with both pastel and watercolor mediums and has also taught ceramics in several of her teaching experiences.

Art Fair is Saturday

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to the agenda released by Reno County Planner Mark Vonachen, the Reno County Planning Commission will discuss setting a date for a public hearing for another phase of work on solar regulations at their meeting May 16.

The agenda says the planning commission will discuss setting a public hearing date for a series of text amendments to create Article 15-105(58A), adding/clarifying a Solar Energy System (Limited scale commercial) as requiring a conditional use permit and amending Article 15-109 (1) and (2) Accessory Uses Allowed to create private ground-mounted solar energy system regulations.

Public comments will not be accepted on that agenda item on May 16. They will be accepted at the future public hearing, whenever it is scheduled.

Also on the agenda are two other zoning cases, one from&nbsp;John Van Bruggen &amp; Clydesdale Frames Company, Inc. for a conditional use permit to establish a church and clinical counseling center on land zoned R-2 – Suburban Residential District. The property is located at 7201 E. 4th Avenue. That case will allow comments on May 16.

The other case is a request by Horst Properties, LLC for a conditional use permit to establish a residential duplex on land zoned V-1 – Village District. The property is located at 3501 E. Red Rock Road. That case will also allow comments on May 16.&nbsp;

The comment restrictions on cases are&nbsp;limited to the specific agenda item for a maximum of five minutes per person. Comments not addressing the agenda item at hand are prohibited.

Further solar discussion on County planning agenda

RENO COUNTY —&nbsp;The entrance ramp from Fourth Avenue to southbound K-14 is expected to close Monday, May 13, and reopen around 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 15.

The exit ramp from southbound K-14 to Sixth Avenue is expected to close Wednesday, May 15, and reopen around 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18.

The ramp work is part of a nearly $3.6 million patching project on K-14. The Kansas Department of Transportation project is from the west K-14/U.S. 50 junction north to Yaggy Road.&nbsp;The length is almost 7 miles. The work is expected to be completed around mid-August.

Upcoming K-14 ramp closures set in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec, in collaboration with the Kansas State Fairgrounds, Strataca, the Cosmosphere, Salt City Brewing, the Hutchinson Zoo, and Downtown Hutchinson, announce the 11th annual Smallville Festival taking place June 20-22, 2024.

Residents and visitors are invited to attend this three-day celebration when Hutchinson changes its name to Smallville, hometown of Clark Kent (better known as Superman). The Smallville Festival is a way for our residents and visitors to celebrate what makes small-town living super. This celebration focuses on small-town values that include tradition, hard work, grit, determination, and pride in where we live.

Featured events at this year’s Smallville Festival include:

Community partners announce 2024 Smallville Festival 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Summer Meal Program will run from May 28, 2024, through July 26, 2024. There will be no meals served on July 4, 2024, and July 5, 2024.

The locations will be at Hutchinson Middle School – 7, Fairgrounds Splash Park, and the Hutchinson Public Library.

· Hutchinson Middle School – 7: M-F 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

· Fairgrounds Splash Park: M-F 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

· Hutchinson Public Library: M-F 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Families can obtain a meal pass by coming to HMS 7 during meal service with children present.

Meal Passes are only available for pickup at HMS 7 &amp; children must be present.

Once you receive your pass, they can be used at any meal site and children do not need to be present to receive meals.&nbsp;Meals are free for all children ages 18 and younger. No application or proof of income required. At HMS 7 only, breakfast for the next day will be provided with lunch.

2024 Summer meals start May 28

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Saltcity Cowboy Church is holding its annual Church in the Dirt this weekend at the McCullough Arena, 4702 W. 4th Ave., Hutchinson, KS. 

This year, the theme is God of Possible. Saturday evening will start at 5 p.m. with yard games, a kids corral with toddler friendly activities and horse back rides, and a dunk tank. At 6 p.m. there will be a free will donation hamburger feed. At 7 p.m. there will be a worship service followed by a handful of testimonies from members. 

Sunday morning there will be a free will donation breakfast starting at 9:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m. there will be a worship service followed by Guest Speaker Marcus Pitts, Oxford House World Council Vice-Chair. Marcus will be talking about his journey from facing 27.5 years in prison to his position at Oxford House with the grace of God. 

Following service all of Saturday's yard activities will be available as well.

Church in the Dirt this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Salt City Foods, owned by Eric Beachy, has signed a loan agreement to acquire Helmuth Bakery, a local business in Hutchinson.

StartUp Hutch played a pivotal role in preparing Eric for this endeavor through its Entrepreneurship Business Basics (EBB) JUMP program. This 12-week intensive course equips aspiring entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills needed to start and manage a business. Eric's participation in the program provided him with valuable insights and coaching, preparing him for the process of acquiring Helmuth Bakery.

"We're proud to support entrepreneurs like Eric Beachy through the entire entrepreneurial journey," said Jackson Swearer, Executive Director at StartUp Hutch. "His dedication, combined with the experience gained through our EBB JUMP program, exemplifies the spirit of entrepreneurship we aim to foster in our community."

Eric Beachy brings a wealth of experience to this new venture. With a family background in food manufacturing and distribution, as well as a bachelor’s degree in food &amp; nutrition with a minor in Business Administration, Eric has spent years honing his skills in food safety, regulatory compliance, product labeling, and new product innovation.

"I am grateful for the support and guidance provided by StartUp Hutch throughout this process," said Eric Beachy, owner of Salt City Foods. StartUp Hutch helps with Helmuth Bakery transition

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Law Enforcement from across Reno County will join together Friday, May 17 for the annual Peace Officers Memorial Day observance at 11 a.m. in front of the Law Enforcement Center in Hutchinson.

Reno County Sheriff Darrian Campbell will have an opening statement, then Chaplain Adam Wooten will give the invocation, followed by guest speaker Kansas CPOST Director Doug Schroeder.&nbsp;

There will be a recognition of fallen officers and the posting of colors and then Hutchinson Police Chief Brice Burlie will have closing remarks.

If there is rain, activities will move indoors to the auditorium in the basement of the Law Enforcement Center.

This workshop is open to the community, and they encourage you to attend. The goal is to help the community understand what placemaking is and gain insight as plans move forward and officials implement new ideas in Downtown Hutchinson related to placemaking. 

This event will serve as a demonstration project for some of the ideas in the Downtown Master Plan.

Below is a schedule of what the day will look like:

KINGMAN COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 11 a.m. Thursday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp;&nbsp;Gustavo Alonzo Rodriguez-Gonzalez, 21, Wichita, was westbound on Kansas 42 at the Kansas 14 intersection.&nbsp; The driver failed to stop before turning onto Southbound K-14.&nbsp; He lost control of the vehicle and it overturned .

EMS transported&nbsp;Rodriguez-Gonzalez to the Kingman Community Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

MCPHERSON, Kan. — McPherson County All Schools Day has its full day of activities on Friday, May 10.

"McPherson County All Schools Day started in 1914," said 2024 chairman Kyler Jost. "This is actually the 111th. It started originally as a celebration for eighth graders within the county, to basically celebrate, in most cases, that they were done with their education. In 1914, a lot of McPherson County students didn't go on to high school. That was kind of the end of a lot of their educational journeys. This was a way for them to be celebrated."

McPherson County celebration of education with events Friday

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona today announced the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars, recognizing 161 high school seniors for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields.

The Kansas scholars include (hometown, scholar, school, location):

“The 161 high school seniors selected for the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Presidential Scholars represent the best of our nation’s schools and inspire hope in the bright future of this country,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “On behalf of President Biden, I am delighted to celebrate their accomplishments, and encourage these scholars to continue to aim high, lift up others, and embrace opportunities to lead.”

The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects scholars annually based on academic success, excellence in the arts and in technical education, through essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as a demonstrated commitment to community service and leadership.

Of the 3.7 million students expected to graduate from high school this year, more than 5,700 candidates qualified for the 2024 awards determined by outstanding performance on the College Board SAT or ACT exams or through nominations made by chief state school officers, other partner recognition organizations and YoungArts, the National Foundation for the Advancement of Artists.

As directed by Presidential Executive Order, the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars are comprised of two students from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and U.S. families living abroad, as well as 15 chosen at-large, 20 scholars in the arts and 20 scholars in career and technical education. 

Created in 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has honored over 8,200 of the nation's top-performing students. The program was expanded in 1979 to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, literary and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. 2024 is the program’s 60th anniversary.

The Presidential Scholars Class of 2024 will be recognized for their outstanding achievement this summer with an online recognition program.

Newton student named Presidential Scholar

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police made an arrest connected to a disturbance Thursday morning. 

According to a release from Capt. Dayton Gates, at approximately 8:33 a.m., officers were dispatched to 1st Ave and Main Street for a disturbance. When officers arrived on scene, they located a male victim with a laceration to his body. Another victim reported a male threatening him with a knife during the same incident.

The injured victim was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment. He is currently in stable condition. Briantey L. Baskin, 26 YOA male of Hutchinson, was arrested for Attempted Murder in the First Degree and Aggravated Assault.

Arrest made in attempted murder in downtown Hutchinson Thursday

RENO COUNTY — The Reno County Sheriff's Office said Thursday that they received information from the KBI that there is a scam going around right now targeting registered offenders. The number is 785-236-7411. The caller identifies himself as Officer Strickland with the KBI. He tells offenders that they missed an appointment and now have a warrant for arrest. 

He told the offenders that they should have received a certified packet in the mail with paperwork to fill out and they were supposed to bring it with them to their appointment and since they missed they have a warrant. He told them that they could turn themselves in at the Sheriff's Office and to bring $1200 to bond out with. 

The KBI also has heard of an email being sent to an offender with a  QR code and told the offender that it would be faster if they just went to a kiosk and paid the $1200 and when they got to the kiosk, they would send him a QR code.&nbsp;&nbsp;

RENO COUNTY — According to the Reno County Public Works Department, Maple Grove Road Bridge between Sylvia Road and Olcott Road, located 3.5 miles south and 2.5 miles east of Turon, has been reopened as of May 9. The bridge had been closed since January&nbsp;due to the KDOT statewide load rating program for repairs.

County announces bridge back open near Turon

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" is a biographical feature on one of Hutch's most famous sons.

Delos V. Smith Jr. was born in Hutchinson in 1906. His father was the owner of the Hutchinson Saddlery Company at 101 W. 1st. The first photo shows him at age 12 on his bike at home at 112 W. 6th.

In 1928, he graduated from the University of Kansas. The second photo is of young Delos.

He traveled the world for many years, eventually settling into his theatrical career. He would eventually appear in 13 movies, 16 television shows and nearly two dozen Broadway productions. The third photo shows him in various Hollywood poses.

He met Marilyn Monroe and became her assistant and mentor. The fourth photo shows him in one of his stage personalities.

One of his last films was the critically acclaimed "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in 1975. The fifth photo show Delos on the left with Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito.

In 1981, at the age of 75, Delos officially retired from acting and returned to Hutchinson. After that, he taught some drama at HutchCC and acquired real estate. The sixth photo is one of Delos's last known.

When Delos died in 1997, he left his multi-million dollar estate to a trust to fund senior citizen programs and to fund the Delos V. Smith Senior Center at 1st and Washington. That legacy continues today.

 </figure>One of his last films was the critically acclaimed "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in 1975. The fifth photo show Delos on the left with Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito.<figure>

 </figure>In 1981, at the age of 75, Delos officially retired from acting and returned to Hutchinson. After that, he taught some drama at HutchCC and acquired real estate. The sixth photo is one of Delos's last known.<figure>

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners at their meeting on Wednesday, gave direction via a 3-2 vote to ban large scale commercial solar projects within the zoned portion of the county. 

Commissioners Hirst, Parks and Bogner voted in favor of the ban, Commissioners Whitesel and Friesen voted against the ban, but it seemed that their no votes may have been more about the process than major support for solar itself.
