NICKERSON, Kan. — Enrollment is under way in the Nickerson USD 309 school district for the Central State Academy virtual school.

Last year the academy celebrated 30&nbsp; high school graduates. Central State Academy offers a fully accredited curriculum and 24/7 access to students to allow them to work at their own pace and structure. The school also has a close working relationship with Hutchinson Community College to offer dual credits to high school students who wish to take advantage of early college and CTE programs.

Karla R. Dellinger, 66, died July 11, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born July 16, 1955, in Nevada, MO, the daughter of Wilmer and Sylvia Yoder Miller.&nbsp; 

She was a graduate of Haven High School and received her associates degree from Brown Mackey College, Salina.&nbsp; A residence of Panama City, FL from 1998 – 2018, she had worked as an accounts payable manager for Early Learning Coalition.&nbsp; She was a member of Living Word Church, Panama City, FL.&nbsp; She married Larry Dellinger on September 22, 1988. &nbsp;He passed away June 12, 1994.&nbsp;

Survivors include her mother, South Hutchinson; a daughter, Jessica (Jimmy Bullard) Dellinger, Panama City, FL; granddaughters Zoey Dellinger and Ava Bullard, Panama City, FL; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Dellinger, Nickerson; 3 step grandchildren, Ashlea Griffith, Alexis Twigg, and Stormy Thompson; 3 step great grandchildren; and siblings, Wanda Morgan, , Donita (Danny) King, and Rodney Miller, all of Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by her father and her husband.

Cremation is planned.&nbsp; Memorial services will be announced at a later date.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ruthe K. Willems, 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, surrounded by family at The Cedars, McPherson.

Ruthe was born Jan. 22, 1931, on the family farm in Dallas County, Iowa, the third daughter of Peter A. and Arbie Ruth (Wingert) Keller. Two sons later completed the Keller family.

Ruthe began first grade at the age of 4. Had she waited, she would have been the only student in her grade level at Fairview country school. Later, rheumatic fever kept her out of school for a year.

After graduating as salutatorian from Dallas Center High School in 1948, Ruthe went on to study at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines and to work at the Brenton State Bank in Dallas Center. She married Alvin E. Willems Dec. 20, 1952, at the Church of the Brethren in Dallas Center. The couple made their first home on the campus of McPherson College, where Alvin was teaching. The couple served as house parents first at Kline Hall and then later at Fahnestock Hall. In 1958, they moved their growing family to 1422 E. Euclid. They remained in “the big house” until 2006, when they downsized to The Cedars Village.

After working as a stay-at-home mom for many years, Ruthe returned to banking in 1976 when her former boss at the Brenton State Bank met Dick Nichols, president of McPherson’s Home State Bank, at a national convention. Ruthe’s name came up in conversation, and Dick Nichols went on to offer Ruthe a job at Home State. Ruthe retired from her position as general ledger administrator in the early 1990s.

Not only was Ruthe adept at numbers, but she was also very good at baking. Her pie crusts and Sunday morning cinnamon rolls were second to none.

Alvin and Ruthe, along with their four children, indulged their love of the Rocky Mountains every summer at the family cabin in Chaffee County, Colorado. Although not raised Mennonite, Ruthe enjoyed taking Mennonite heritage tours with Alvin and his cousin and wife, Vic and Josephine Willems. Together, they explored Germany, the Ukraine, and Paraguay.

Softspoken, kind and nurturing, Ruthe was the much beloved mother of Mark, Susan, Janette, and Brent. To the end, she closely followed the lives of her children, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. “What’s new with the kids?” was her most oft-repeated phrase.

A faithful member of the McPherson Church of the Brethren, Ruthe joined the church’s choir later in life and participated until glaucoma destroyed her ability to read music. Ruthe also was a member of Chapter EU of the P.E.O Sisterhood.

Ruthe is survived by her children, Susan (Gordon) Hornbaker of Elizabeth, CO; Janette (Bryan) Hess of McPherson; Brent (Arleen Paulino) Willems of Westlake Village, CA; and daughter-in-law Machelle Willems of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Laura (Jason) Smith of Kiowa, CO; Matthew (Jessica) Hess of Denver, CO; Marc (Kim) Hess of Overland Park; and Grant Hornbaker of Centennial, CO; and seven great-grandchildren: Adeline, Ainsley, Berkeley, Amelia, Dashiell, Bennett and Wesley.

Other survivors include her siblings, Dorothy Eby of Dallas Center, IA, Joe (Marion) Keller of Dallas Center, IA, and Andy (Jan) Keller of Ackworth, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, eldest son, Mark, sister, Mary Copeland, and multiple in-laws.

A visitation/informal celebration of life will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at McPherson Church of the Brethren. &nbsp;A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 14, at Zoar Cemetery, Inman with Reverends Chris &amp; Kathryn Whitacre officiating. &nbsp;

Carol Ann Froese, 74, of Sterling, passed away July 10, 2022, at her home. She was born October 7, 1947, in Whittier, California, the daughter of John Andrew and Luella Heinrichs Thiesen. 

Carol has resided in Sterling since 1974, formerly of Fresno and Whittier, California. She graduated from Sterling College with a Bachelor’s degree in 1977. Carol was a business owner and operator of Décor Party Supplies and was a cake decorator. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Sterling, and a member of Hutchinson Downtown Development Corporation. For 32 years, Carol coordinated the Sterling Thanksgiving Dinner for the community. 

On June 17, 1967, Carol was united in marriage with Arnold “Arn” Froese in Whittier, California. He survives of the home. She is also survived by her son Jerram David Froese of Flower Mound, TX; daughter, Nicholee Carin Froese of Albany, NY; bonus children, Manuel de Jesus Guerra Garcia and Flor Amanda Vidal Asmomo of Copan, Honduras; sister, Judi Habben and husband Jim of La Habra, CA; and seven grandchildren, Coral, Calum, Diego, Izabella, Asa, Denzel, and Carol. Carol is preceded in death by her parents. 

Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the United Presbyterian Church, Sterling, with Pastor Melissa Krabbe officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, July 22, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with family present.&nbsp;

Nettie Elizabeth Trost Bray, 82, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away July 9, 2022, at the Sterling Village. Nettie was born August 23, 1939, in Salem, Oregon to Walter and Georgia (McLaress) Trost. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by three younger brothers, Gerald, George and Thomas. Growing up years were spent on the family farm north of Concordia. 

Nettie was active in 4-H and helping on the farm. She attended Sibley country school and graduated from Concordia High School in the class of 1957. She worked at JC Penney in Concordia where her job included changing window displays. That’s where Nettie was spotted by her future beau and husband, Jack Bray, in 1959. They married September 26, 1959 after dating for only three months. Shortly after, they moved to Manhattan where Nettie assisted Jack in managing a rural gas station. Four years and three children later the family moved to Fowler, for another gas station opportunity. 

In June, 1968, they moved a final time to Sterling where they had purchased Superbe Oil Co. In the community Nettie served as a Sunday School teacher at the Methodist Church and a Girl Scout leader. During the 1971-72 school year, she attended Sidney’s Hairdressing College in Hutchinson earning her cosmetology license. She also worked for JC Penney in Lyons and People’s Savings and Loan in downtown Sterling. April 9, 1979, Nettie suffered a major stroke and was hospitalized for a month in Wichita. Her spirit of independence and determination remained strong through a long rehabilitation and permanent disability on her right side. She was able to work alongside Jack at the Co-op Service Station for a number of years until their retirement in 2000. Signs of dementia became evident around 2015 and in 2017 Nettie and Jack sold their home and moved into one of the Sterling Manor cottages. Due to ill health they moved into the manor in October 2018 and Jack passed away unexpectedly in March, 2019. The Manor became the Village and Nettie continued to live there until her passing. 

Nettie is survived by her three children and spouses, Cindy and Darryl Wittich, Mount Hope; Wendy and Steve Fiehler, Sterling, and Jeff and Kristen Bray, Penn Yan, NY. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and spouses: Chance and Sarah Fiehler, Stephanie and Robert Edgington, Jacob and Dakoda Fiehler, Wesley and Courtney Wittich, Kodi Fiehler, Tyler and Bethany Bray and Kelly Bray. And thirteen great-grandchildren. In addition, Nettie is survived by Jack’s sister and husband, Kathy and Gene Begnoche. 

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with Dennis Corbett officiating. Burial will follow at the Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Monday, July 11, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will do its official notice of intent to exceed the Revenue Neutral Rate for its upcoming year budget as part of the meeting on Thursday.

According to its notification to the county clerk, the proposed mill levy rate is 21.829 mills which is flat with last year, but technically the college will generate more money with the same mill rate due to valuation increases. The hearing date for the budget is set for September 8.

Also on the agenda is approving the bid for the purchase of forty data secure tablets and twenty flexible keyboards, approved by Kansas Department of Corrections for use at Hutchinson Correctional Facility from American Prison Data Systems, PBC for a total purchase price of $19,269.80.

In addition, the board will approve the bid for the purchase of a CDL Class “A” Tractor for the college's CDL training, due to increased enrollment. Cost will not exceed $65,000.

The board will further approve a bid for the replacement of 36 faculty computers, desktops and laptops, and 80 docking stations at a cost of $87,199.35 from Underground Vault &amp; Storage.

The board will also approve a purchase of lab computers at a cost of  $257,544.81 from Underground Vault &amp; Storage.

The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will meet Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Justice Theater in the Shears Technology Center at Hutchinson Community College at 1300 North Plum.

HutchCC Board to notify clerk of revenue neutral rate hearing Thursday

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-congress-donald-trump-subpoenas-government-and-politics-af491858a41ce4f42416fe3a7131592e">Abruptly raising the question of witness tampering, the Jan. 6 committee</a>&nbsp;revealed Tuesday that Donald Trump had attempted to contact a person who was talking to the panel about its investigation of the former president and the 2021 attack on the Capitol.

“We will take any effort to influence witness testimony very seriously,” said Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo. She said the committee had notified the Justice Department.

The person Trump tried to contact declined to answer or respond to his call, Cheney said. Instead the person alerted their lawyer who contacted the committee.

The disclosure by Cheney was not the first time the panel has raised concerns about witnesses being contacted by Trump's team in ways that could reflect or at least create the appearance of inappropriate influence. It divulged examples last week of other times witnesses have received outreach from Trump allies, some suggesting he was aware they were talking to the committee, ahead of testimony before the panel.

A Trump spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The hearing Tuesday was the seventh for the Jan. 6 committee. Over the past month, the panel has created a narrative of a defeated Trump “detached from reality,” clinging to false claims of voter fraud and working feverishly to reverse his election defeat. It all culminated with the attack on the Capitol, the committee says.

Tuesday's session revealed details of an “unhinged” late night meeting at the White House with Donald Trump’s outside lawyers suggesting the military seize state voting machines in a last-ditch effort to pursue his false claims of voter fraud before the defeated president summoned&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">a mob to the U.S. Capitol.</a>

The committee investigating last year's attack at the Capitol is working to show how far-right extremists answered Trump's call to come for a big rally in Washington. As dozens of lawsuits and his claims of voter fraud fizzled, Trump met late into the night of Dec. 18 with attorneys at the White House before tweeting the rally invitation — “Be there, will be wild!” Members of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitol-siege-donald-trump-congress-government-and-politics-e7ad5f0a566bf332477ed223abdd5f12">Proud Boys and Oath Keepers</a>&nbsp;groups are now facing rare sedition charges over the siege.

“You guys are not tough enough,” Giuliani in video testimony recalled the president telling the White House attorneys. “You guys are p——-,” he said, using crass language.

As night turned to morning, Trump tweeted the call for supporters to come to Washington on Jan. 6, when Congress would be tallying the Electoral College results. “Be there. Will be wild,” Trump wrote.

The panel showed graphic and violent text messages and played videos of right-wing figures, including Alex Jones, and others laying out that Jan. 6 would be the day they fight for the president.

In vulgar and often racist language the messages beaming across the far-right forums planned for the big day that they said Trump was asking for in Washington. It would be a “red wedding,” said one, a reference to mass killing. “Bring handcuffs."

Several members of the U.S. Capitol Police who fought the mob that day sat stone-faced in the front row of the committee room.

“The problem of politicians whipping up mob violence to destroy fair elections is the oldest domestic enemy of constitutional democracy,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., in opening remarks.

At the witness table to testify in person was Jason Van Tatenhove, an ally of Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes. Another witness was Stephen Ayres, who pleaded guilty last month to disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building. He has said that on Jan. 2, 2021, he posted an image stating that Trump was “calling on us to come back to Washington on January 6th for a big protest.”

The committee is probing whether the extremist groups, including the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and QAnon adherents who had rallied for Trump before, coordinated with White House allies for Jan. 6. The Oath Keepers have denied there was any plan to storm the Capitol.

The committee began the second half of the hearing making connections between Trump allies Flynn and Roger Stone and the extremist groups who were preparing to come to Washington.

It showed showing a picture of Rhodes, the Oath Keeper leader, walking with Flynn, the former national security aide to Trump, outside the Capitol at some point.

This was the only hearing this week, as new details emerge. An expected prime-time hearing Thursday has been shelved for now.

"This is actually Mel Hambleton's 12th year of donating a car for this event. We have some more details. We will have a 2019 Ford Fusion. Some of these cars are really hard to find right now. It would make a really great first car or for a college student or just someone that's looking for a commuter car. It gets 21 miles to the gallon in the city and 31 on the highway. Tickets can be purchased for $25 each for a chance to win. We do have some packages available, so the more tickets you buy, the cheaper they become."

Nettie Elizabeth Trost Bray, 82, of Sterling, Kansas, passed away July 9, 2022, at the Sterling Village.

Nettie was born August 23, 1939, in Salem, Oregon to Walter and Georgia (McLaress) Trost. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by three younger brothers, Gerald, George and Thomas.

Growing up years were spent on the family farm north of Concordia, KS. Nettie was active in 4-H and helping on the farm. She attended Sibley country school and graduated from Concordia High School in the class of 1957. She worked at JC Penney in Concordia where her job included changing window displays. That’s where Nettie was spotted by her future beau and husband, Jack Bray, in 1959. They married September 26, 1959 after dating for only three months. Shortly after, they moved to Manhattan where Nettie assisted Jack in managing a rural gas station. Four years and three children later the family moved to Fowler, KS for another gas station opportunity. In June, 1968, they moved a final time to Sterling where they had purchased Superbe Oil Co. In the community Nettie served as a Sunday School teacher at the Methodist Church and a Girl Scout leader. During the 1971-72 school year, she attended Sidney’s Hairdressing College in Hutchinson earning her cosmetology license. She also worked for JC Penney in Lyons and People’s Savings and Loan in downtown Sterling.

April 9, 1979, Nettie suffered a major stroke and was hospitalized for a month in Wichita. Her spirit of independence and determination remained strong through a long rehabilitation and permanent disability on her right side. She was able to work alongside Jack at the Co-op Service Station for a number of years until their retirement in 2000. Signs of dementia became evident around 2015 and in 2017 Nettie and Jack sold their home and moved into one of the Sterling Manor cottages. Due to ill health they moved into the manor in October 2018 and Jack passed away unexpectedly in March, 2019. The Manor became Sterling Village and Nettie continued to live there until her passing.

Nettie is survived by her three children and spouses, Cindy and Darryl Wittich, Mount Hope; Wendy and Steve Fiehler, Sterling, and Jeff and Kristen Bray, Penn Yan, NY. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and spouses: Chance and Sarah Fiehler, Stephanie and Robert Edgington, Jacob and Dakoda Fiehler, Wesley and Courtney Wittich, Kodi Fiehler, Tyler and Bethany Bray and Kelly Bray and thirteen great-grandchildren. In addition, Nettie is survived by Jack’s sister and husband, Kathy and Gene Begnoche.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with Dennis Corbett officiating. Burial will follow at the Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M., Monday, July 11, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson City Council voted to appoint Erin Cokeley to the planning commission at Tuesday night’s meeting. This is the first time in more than a decade that the nine-member body will be fully seated and not have at least one vacancy.

According to a press release from the city, Cokeley’s interest in serving on the planning commission arose out of her volunteering to organize mud volleyball competitions during the city’s first-ever fireworks show last weekend.

“The Independence Day fireworks show seemed to awaken people because many expressed a desire to volunteer and help out in the future,” City Administrator Joseph Turner said. “Erin’s passion for her community and eagerness to serve is infectious.”

Cokeley, a nurse practitioner who graduated from Hutchinson Community College in 2017, has been a lifelong resident of Reno County. She attended Nickerson Elementary, Reno Valley, and graduated from Nickerson High School. Her and her husband chose to live in South Hutchinson because they wanted to be in a smaller community and eventually send their children to USD 309.

“We love this community so much and plan to start our family here,” Cokeley said. “I want to become more involved in the city and help it prosper.”

The planning commission is now comprised of six men and three women. It meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Cokeley appointed to South Hutchinson Planning Commission

Lila Louise (Cook) Emmert, 84, passed away July 3, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village.&nbsp; She was born April 28, 1938, in Lyons, to Clarence Bernard and Alma (Ellis) Cook.

Lila was a 1956 graduate of Lyons High School, Lyons.&nbsp; She attended McPherson College, McPherson, for three years where she met the love of her life, Ed.&nbsp; Lila was a member of Portage Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, Portage, MI.&nbsp; Since moving to Hutchinson, she attended Community Church of the Brethren.

Lila, along with Ed, raised their three daughters in Portage MI.&nbsp; She had a love for sewing that her daughters were the recipients of many of her exceptional sewing projects.&nbsp; Along with everyday clothes, she made prom dresses, costumes for Halloween and school plays, and bridesmaid’s dresses.&nbsp;&nbsp; Lila also had a love for cooking and baking.&nbsp; Home-cooked meals, hosting dinner parties with friends, and holiday meals with family were specialties of hers.&nbsp; Oyster stew for Christmas, lemon ice for holiday meals, cinnamon rolls for the Easter sunrise breakfast at church and, of course, homemade ice cream for visitors were among the favorites.&nbsp; Lila was the ’State of Kansas 4-H Cherry Pie Champion’ in 1955.&nbsp; It is said that she won Ed over with a cherry pie as a thank you for borrowing his car.

On June 10, 1959, Lila married Dale ‘Ed’ Edward Emmert, in McPherson.&nbsp; They shared over 61 year of marriage, prior to his death on August 18, 2020.

She is survived by:&nbsp; her daughters, Teresa (John) Hiemstra of Edmonton Alberta Canada, Annette Emmert of Hutchinson, and Michelle Emmert Bresser of Houston, TX; fourth daughter (according to Ed and Lila), Sharla Powell of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Josiah (Laura) Hiemstra, David (Erin) Hiemstra, Sara Bresser, and Adam Bresser; great-grandsons, Wiley Hiemstra, Andrew Hiemstra, and Tyrion Hiemstra; siblings, John (Jane) Cook of Lyons, Gary (Carol) Cook of Lyons, and Margaret Cook of Wichita, KS; and sister-in-law, Donna Emmert of Perry, IA.

Lila was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; husband; and brother-in-law, Roger Emmert.

Memorial service for Ed and Lila will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2022, at Community Church of the Brethren, 1600 N. Shelby married Nickolas Stephen Mardock on May 21, 2011 at Pratt County Lake. They were married for 11 years. Shelby graduated from Skyline High School in 2009. She graduated with her Associates Degree in 2015 and her Bachelors Degree in 2018 both from Barclay College, Haviland. She worked as a 911 Dispatcher in Pratt, Greensburg and Hutchinson, and Jenks, Oklahoma. She was a member of Life Church in Jenks, Oklahoma, Youth For Christ (YFC), Switch (Church Group) and Girl Scouts. She enjoyed attending concerts, listening to and singing music, making her own guitar, hiking, taking care of her chickens and traveling. She absolutely loved being a mother. Marshal Craig Funk, 43, of Redmond,
Washington and formerly of McPherson, passed away on Saturday, June 11,
2022, at his home.&nbsp; 

Marshal was born September 13, 1978, to
Willard R. and Janet I. (Schmidt) Funk in McPherson.&nbsp; He attended
Sonshine Preschool, Lincoln Elementary School, McPherson Middle School and
McPherson High School.&nbsp; Marshal enjoyed school and learning.&nbsp; 

A friend and neighbor, Shawn Hein, was a
big part of Marshal’s childhood.&nbsp; It was almost as if they were
twins.&nbsp; Where one was, the other was never far away.&nbsp; Marshal enjoyed
school and the relationships he had with his teachers.&nbsp; At an early age,
Marshal developed an interest in space exploration and meteorology.&nbsp; Many
hours were spent at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson.&nbsp; He knew the mission of
every space flight and what it involved.&nbsp; He was also interested in
observing weather.&nbsp; Initially he was terrified of storms and severe
weather.&nbsp; Needless to say, the weather channel was on almost constantly,
especially on days when there were weather alerts.&nbsp; When tornado sirens
went off, we usually went to the neighbor’s basement for shelter.&nbsp; On one
of those days, his dad noticed his backpack was moving and squirming.&nbsp;
Marshal had packed four kittens in there to take to the neighbor’s
basement.&nbsp;&nbsp; Eventually after learning what causes severe weather, he
became more rational and even wanted to go out and chase storms.

Marshal attended First Baptist Church
regularly with his family.&nbsp; In 1988, he was baptized after professing his
faith in Christ.&nbsp; Marshal would look forward to spending time with family
and friends.&nbsp; At family reunions, he enjoyed sharing his jokes and
puns.&nbsp; Marshal also enjoyed vacations with his family, especially time in
the mountains of Colorado.

Marshal played trombone in the Middle
School Band and Jazz Band.&nbsp; This carried over to the High School Marching
Band, Pep Band and Jazz Band.&nbsp; Marshal enjoyed reading, and read many
books from a wide range of genres.&nbsp; Early in high school, Marshal was hired
at the local Dairy Queen where he developed a good work ethic.

Marshal graduated from high school in 1997
and went on to Kansas State University where he participated in Marching Band
his freshman year.&nbsp; He worked as an assistant for two years at Goodnow
Residence Hall.&nbsp; He graduated in 2002 with a degree in History and a minor
in Computer Science.

After graduating from college, Marshal
packed up his car and moved to Seattle, Washington, where he had a job waiting
for him through his friend, Daniel Horn.&nbsp; He worked at various software
companies, including Marchex, White Pages, Amazon and others, ending up at the
University of Washington.&nbsp; Marshal enjoyed cooking and was happy to give
his advice on cooking procedures to those of us less able. In an uncharacteristic
move, Marshal became a dedicated Seattle Seahawks fan for several years when he
had access to season tickets through his apartment manager.&nbsp; In 2014 when
the Seahawks won a Super Bowl, it was time to move on.&nbsp; 

We always looked forward to Marshal being
home at Christmas and catching up on life’s events.&nbsp; Marshal had a quiet
and reserved personality, but he was a positive influence in the lives of
people he knew and worked with.&nbsp; Marshal will be greatly missed.

Marshal is survived by his father, Willard
Funk (Mary) of McPherson; step-brothers, Ryan Shaw (Jordan) and family of
Cheney, and Connor Shaw of Kansas City; and several aunts, uncles and
cousins.&nbsp; 

A special thanks to Roger and Karen Horn,
Daniel and Ashley Horn, and their families for including Marshal in their
holiday family celebrations and dinners.

He was preceded in death by his mother,
Janet Funk, and his grandparents, Peter Jr. and Hilda Schmidt and Roy and Mary
Ann Funk.

Marshal Craig Funk, 43, of Redmond,
Washington and formerly of McPherson, passed away on Saturday, June 11,
2022, at his home.&nbsp; Marshal was born September 13, 1978, to
Willard R. and Janet I. (Schmidt) Funk in McPherson.&nbsp; He attended
Sonshine Preschool, Lincoln Elementary School, McPherson Middle School and
McPherson High School.&nbsp; Marshal enjoyed school and learning.&nbsp; A friend and neighbor, Shawn Hein, was a
big part of Marshal’s childhood.&nbsp; It was almost as if they were
twins.&nbsp; Where one was, the other was never far away.&nbsp; Marshal enjoyed
school and the relationships he had with his teachers.&nbsp; At an early age,
Marshal developed an interest in space exploration and meteorology.&nbsp; Many
hours were spent at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson.&nbsp; He knew the mission of
every space flight and what it involved.&nbsp; He was also interested in
observing weather.&nbsp; Initially he was terrified of storms and severe
weather.&nbsp; Needless to say, the weather channel was on almost constantly,
especially on days when there were weather alerts.&nbsp; When tornado sirens
went off, we usually went to the neighbor’s basement for shelter.&nbsp; On one
of those days, his dad noticed his backpack was moving and squirming.&nbsp;
Marshal had packed four kittens in there to take to the neighbor’s
basement.&nbsp;&nbsp; Eventually after learning what causes severe weather, he
became more rational and even wanted to go out and chase storms.Marshal attended First Baptist Church
regularly with his family.&nbsp; In 1988, he was baptized after professing his
faith in Christ.&nbsp; Marshal would look forward to spending time with family
and friends.&nbsp; At family reunions, he enjoyed sharing his jokes and
puns.&nbsp; Marshal also enjoyed vacations with his family, especially time in
the mountains of Colorado.Marshal played trombone in the Middle
School Band and Jazz Band.&nbsp; This carried over to the High School Marching
Band, Pep Band and Jazz Band.&nbsp; Marshal enjoyed reading, and read many
books from a wide range of genres.&nbsp; Early in high school, Marshal was hired
at the local Dairy Queen where he developed a good work ethic.Marshal graduated from high school in 1997
and went on to Kansas State University where he participated in Marching Band
his freshman year.&nbsp; He worked as an assistant for two years at Goodnow
Residence Hall.&nbsp; He graduated in 2002 with a degree in History and a minor
in Computer Science.After graduating from college, Marshal
packed up his car and moved to Seattle, Washington, where he had a job waiting
for him through his friend, Daniel Horn.&nbsp; He worked at various software
companies, including Marchex, White Pages, Amazon and others, ending up at the
University of Washington.&nbsp; Marshal enjoyed cooking and was happy to give

David L. Schrag, 68, passed away June 29, 2022, at his home with his family by his side. He was born May 28, 1954, to Richard J. and Arlene M. (Graber) Schrag in Hutchinson. He graduated from Central Christian High School, Hutchinson, and Hutchinson Community College.

He had worked for the Reno County Fire Department, Hutchinson Hospital, and Reno County EMS. Dave was a member of Union Valley Bible Church, Hutchinson.

On June 2, 1973, he married Joan Hoffman in Hutchinson. She survives.

Other survivors include his two children and their spouses; Linda and Jeremy Morgan, Blue Ridge, TX and Kevin and Andrea Schrag, Mount Hope, KS; a brother, Rick (Penny) Schrag, Naples, FL; a sister, Kathy (Loren) Kroeker, Inman; 12 grandchildren, David and Cameron Morgan, Kristen and Jack Lucas, Sarah and Nathan Allen, Courtney, Elizabeth, and Abigail Morgan, and Meghan, Jacob, and Joshua Schrag; and 2 great grandchildren, Margaret Lucas and Casper Morgan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Becky Schrag.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Inman Funeral Home, with the family present. The pancake feed served 150 community members and their families, the car show had 20 entrants and raised $350 for the Edward L. 'Eddie' Tipton Minority Scholarship Endowment at HutchCC. 

Also, there was a blood drive, a movie, a domino and spades tournament and music by the George Sander Band.

Tipton thanked the volunteers, supporters and sponsors for their contributions.

Doris Ann Miller, 77, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 1, 2022, surrounded by family at Hospice House, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born July 18, 1944, in Dearborn, Michigan to Hiram Ford and Doris Ann (Stobbe) Swabby.

She graduated high school from Windom, Kansas and attended Brown Mackie Business College in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp;

She was united in marriage with P. Russell Miller on March 5, 1966. They lived in Salina, Kansas for seven years where she worked at Dillon Optical and then Westinghouse Warehouse. She was blessed to have two children: Debra Ann and David Russell.&nbsp;

In 1974, they moved to a country farm north of Little River, Kansas where she became a homemaker and once her children were in high school and junior high, she worked as a prep cook in several local cafes and later at a manufacturing company where she was injured on the job. This accident started the decline in health and mobility for her.&nbsp;

Doris and Russell had moved to Hutchinson, Kansas for her last five years.

Doris's hobbies included: gardening, canning, sewing, raising chickens, and cooking. Doris enjoyed traveling to New York, Michigan, Missouri, Arizona, South Dakota and Montana with friends and family. Her pets, no matter the size, were her pride and joy, it did not matter if they were calves, dogs or cats. Doris enjoyed spring time the most, because she could pick her lilacs and peonies. She loved the smells.

Preceding her in death are her mother, Doris; father, Ford; brother, Kenneth; and step-mother, Wilma.

Survivors include her husband, Russell of the home; two children, Debra and Tim Skalinder of Hutchinson, KS and David Miller and Brenda Barber of Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Dakota and Rebecca Skalinder, Alie and Andrew Durst, and Josie Miller; and three great-grandchildren, Kenna, Bryson and Delani.&nbsp;

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, July 8, 2022, at Excelsior Cemetery, Marquette, KS.&nbsp; The casket will be open from 10:00 AM until service time at the cemetery.

Maxine Doris Pauls, 101, died June 29, 2022, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born December 28, 1920, in Little Valley, to J. Arthur and Minnie W. (Achilles) Briggs.&nbsp;

Maxine graduated from Inman High School in 1938, and attended Salt City Business College. She was a Rosie the Riveter, helping to assemble gliders in the former Eaton building.&nbsp; Later, Maxine, along with her husband, children, sister, and brother-in-law were custom harvesters for many years.&nbsp; She loved spending quality time with her family during harvest season. Maxine then began her career at Hutchinson Hospital, where she worked in the dietary department.&nbsp; At the time of her retirement from the hospital, she was a dietary supervisor.&nbsp; Maxine had a gift for doing whatever it took to help her patients. &nbsp;Her hard work and dedication were noticed, and she received one of the Krause-Carey Outstanding Employee Awards at the hospital.&nbsp; This was given to employees who possess a good work ethic, customer service, and above all, went the extra mile to help the patients. After retirement, Maxine enjoyed attending the Delos V. Smith Sr. Citizens Center, playing pitch and bunco with her friends, and sharing quality time with her family.&nbsp;

On October 2, 1949, she married Walter Henry Pauls, in Inman.&nbsp; He died November 26, 1985, after sharing 36 years of marriage.

Maxine is survived by:&nbsp; son, Brad Pauls (Lori); son-in-law, Merle Lemen, Jr.; grandsons, Andrew Lemen, Zach Pauls (Maddie) and Taylor Pauls. two great-grandsons, Miles Benjamin-Pauls and Oliver Benjamin-Pauls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; daughter, Cindy Lemen; three sisters; and one brother.
