SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson City Council voted to appoint Erin Cokeley to the planning commission at Tuesday night’s meeting. This is the first time in more than a decade that the nine-member body will be fully seated and not have at least one vacancy.
According to a press release from the city, Cokeley’s interest in serving on the planning commission arose out of her volunteering to organize mud volleyball competitions during the city’s first-ever fireworks show last weekend.
“The Independence Day fireworks show seemed to awaken people because many expressed a desire to volunteer and help out in the future,” City Administrator Joseph Turner said. “Erin’s passion for her community and eagerness to serve is infectious.”
Cokeley, a nurse practitioner who graduated from Hutchinson Community College in 2017, has been a lifelong resident of Reno County. She attended Nickerson Elementary, Reno Valley, and graduated from Nickerson High School. Her and her husband chose to live in South Hutchinson because they wanted to be in a smaller community and eventually send their children to USD 309.
“We love this community so much and plan to start our family here,” Cokeley said. “I want to become more involved in the city and help it prosper.”
The planning commission is now comprised of six men and three women. It meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
