The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team suffered through scoring droughts of 9 minutes and more than 7 minutes on Wednesday night against Coffeyville and the Blue Dragons never recovered.
The No. 17-ranked Blue Dragons suffered its worst offensive performance of the season and the Red Ravens took advantage in a 68-39 Jayhawk Conference victory over Hutchinson at the Sports Arena, Coffeyville's third-straight victory over Hutchinson.
The Blue Dragons fell to 12-4 overall and 7-3 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson has a bye week on Saturday and travels to play at Pratt next Wednesday, January 14. Coffeyville is now 12-3 overall and 6-3 in the KJCCC.
The last time the Blue Dragons failed to score 40 points in a game was in 2023 when Hutchinson scored 36 against Dodge City. The 29-point margin of loss was the worst of the season and worst since that same Dodge City game in 2023 when the Blue Dragons lost by 36 points.
Hutchinson posted season lows for points scored, total field goals (13), field-goal shooting (26.0 percent) and total rebounds (26) on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Jamya McPherson was the Blue Dragons' leading scorer with 10 points. Freshman Whitney Brown was next with seven points. No other Hutchinson player had more than four points.
The Blue Dragons were 13 of 50 shooting, including 4 of 20 from 3-point range and 9 of 14 from the foul line. The Dragons were out-rebounded 47-26 and had 15 turnovers.
Karliey Parker led three Coffeyville players in double figures with 19 points. Esme Smith had 15 points and Isabella Pehrson had 10 points.
The Ravens shot 43.9 percent from the field (26 of 57), going 9 of 23 from 3-point range and 9 of 14 from the free-throw line.
Hutchinson's only lead was at 5-4 when Brown knocked down a 3-point goal with 8:12 remaining in the opening quarter. Coffeyville then scored nine unanswered points to take a 13-5 lead with 6:05 play in the quarter. McPherson hit a 3-pointer with 4:31 to play in the period to cut the Raven lead to 14-10. Coffeyville out-shot the Dragons 52.9-39.4 percent and led 21-14 after one quarter.
The Blue Dragons went on a 7-2 run over the first 3:17 of the second quarter and pulled within 23-21 after a Katie Duncan 3-pointer with 6:43 to play. Those were the final points of the quarter for Hutchinson as Coffeyville scored the final 11 points of the period to build a 34-21 halftime lead.
Hutchinson's scoring drought went a full 9 minutes and was snapped by KaMyra Barber's 3-point goal with 7:47 to play in the third quarter. The Dragon defense held Coffeyville to 1 of 4 shooting in the quarter, but trimmed only one point off the halftime deficit as Hutchinson trailed 44-32 heading to the fourth quarter.
Brown's transition layup to open the final period cut the Coffeyville lead to 44-34 with 9:29 to play, but the Red Ravens held Hutchinson scoreless for 7 minutes, 9 seconds and scored 21 unanswered points to build a 64-34 lead with 2:40 to go in the game.
