Awards will be presented during 2025 in conjunction with a KSHSAA-sponsored state function/ championship, or locally at the inductee's request. The Class of 2025 Hall of Fame inductees include:

Beverly Heier-Birney, Grinnell - StudentThe three-sport athlete from Grinnell, Beverly Heier-Birney is still the co-holder of the 1A 100m dash record with a time of 12.3 seconds. Track and Field is where Heier made her mark in Kansas history. At the 1983 KSHSAA State Track and Field Championship, Beverly took gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. Ultimately the outstanding performance contributed to Grinnell winning the 1983 1A team championship, which they would also win two other times during her career (1980, 1982). Her performance in 1983 was the sequel to her championships for the 100m and 200m races in 1982. She also won the 100m race in 1980. Heier was part of Grinnell’s 1A KSHSAA State Cross Country Championships in 1980 and 1981. When it was all totaled after her outstanding high school career, Heier won 21 state medals across three sports, including 11 of which were gold.

Steve Bushnell, Topeka - FacultyFor nearly two decades, Steve Bushnell guided one of Kansas’ most dominant baseball programs at Seaman High School.&nbsp;Bushnell, led the Vikings to 18 state tournament appearances, nine Class 5A state championships and four runner-up finishes in 21 seasons. In his 21years at the helm for the Vikings, Bushnell culminated a 401-103 record (.796) which included a record of 42-9 in the state tournament. Seaman won at least 20 games for 10 consecutive years during the Bushnell era. In 2018 he was named the American Baseball Coaches Association High School Division III National Coach of the Year. In addition to baseball, Bushnell was a middle school wrestling coach for 27 years and was named the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association State Middle School Wrestling Coach of the Year in 2012. For 29 years, Bushnell was an educator in the classroom before moving to the athletic director role at Seaman HS in 2020 where he served for three years before retiring.&nbsp;

CJ Hamilton, Silver Lake - FacultyCJ&nbsp;Hamilton is Kansas’ all-time winningest football coach with an amazing 447-98 record. At the conclusion of the 2021 season Hamilton retired after teaching and coaching at Silver Lake for 47 years. A graduate of Silver Lake Hamilton, began his coaching career with his alma mater in 1973. After a brief departure to coach at Washburn for the 1977-78 seasons, Hamilton firmly entrenched himself as coach in 1979. In his 47 seasons as head coach of the Eagles, Silver Lake made the playoffs 40 times. The Eagles won 39 Mid-East League titles and advanced to the state championship 18 times, including seven straight from 2002-08 and 11 times in a 12-year stretch from 2002-13. Silver Lake won the Class 3A state title in 2013 to cap that remarkable stretch -- the eighth state championship for the Eagles under Hamilton. The 18 state championship game appearances are a state record. In addition to football, Hamilton was the head coach for the Silver Lake baseball team that won state championships in 1975, 1977 and 1982.

Dave Hawley, Wichita - FacultyDave Hawley spent 42 years at the helm of Wichita-Collegiate’s boys and girls tennis programs where they won 59 state championships between the two programs (33 girls; 26 boys).&nbsp;In addition, Hawley produced 82 singles and doubles state champions in the boys and girls divisions. Hawley was named the Kansas Boys Tennis Coach of the Year by the Kansas Coaches Association in 1997 and 2016, and received the same honor for girls tennis in 2005. In 2017 he was named the 4A boys coach of the year and was the 4A girls Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2016. Nationally, he was named the USTA High School Coach of the Year and was part of the National High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame inaugural class in 2017. Hawley was named a “Distinguished Teacher” by the Kansas Association of Independent and Religious Schools in 2004. The tennis courts at Wichita Collegiate School were dubbed “Dave Hawley Tennis Complex” in 2005.

Klaus M. Kollmai, Wichita - Contributor

For 46 years Klaus Kollmai committed himself to students as a teacher, coach, administrator and official. Many recognize Klaus as “Mr. Soccer” for his instrumental part in getting high school soccer started in Kansas. For 13 years he coached soccer at the high school and collegiate level before becoming a soccer official for 26 years. When soccer was adopted as a KSHSAA sanctioned sport, Klaus was the lead rules interpreter for 10 years conducting numerous clinics and meetings across the state. From 1997-2001 Kollmai served as the Section 5 rep on the NFHS Soccer Rules Committee. Klaus was selected to work in the state championship match 19 times as the center referee. Kollmai was named the Kansas Boys Soccer Official of the Year in 1992, 1997 and 2014. He started the first varsity soccer tournament at Wichita South HS “The Titan Classic” which currently is in its 39th year running.

The Hall of Fame is housed in the Kansas State High School Activities Association offices, 601 SW Commerce Place in Topeka and is open Monday–Friday during business hours (directions at&nbsp;www.kshsaa.org).&nbsp; The Hall of Fame is also available via the KSHSAA “Gallery of Champions” at&nbsp;http://www.kshsaachamps.org/.

KSHSAA names 2025 Hall of Fame class

HUTCHINSON, KAN. — Hutch High basketball teams split with the Maize Eagles on Tuesday at the Salthawk Activity Center in the season opener for both teams.

The Hutch girls outscored Maize in the second quarter 21-3 to take a commanding lead into halftime 31-13. The Salthawks closed out the fourth quarter strong to come away with a 50-34 victory for the first win of the 2024-25 season.

Hutch High senior leaders Grace Posh and Kaia Smith led in scoring with Posh putting up 18 points and Smith scoring 15.

Maize was lead by freshman guard Malaysia Ingram with 11 points while senior Adley Pierce added 9 points.

Just the opposite story for the Hutch High boy's game as Maize High rode a six-point lead at the half to win their first game of the year 59-46 over the Salthawks.&nbsp;

Maize High senior Alan Hanna let Maize with 26 points on the night. Hutch High was let in scoring with senior Terrell King scoring 22 points and Taishaun Govain's 12 point night.

The Salthawks travel to Buhler for non-league games versus the Crusaders on Friday night. Girls tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the Hutch High boy's contest at 7:30 p.m.

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team looks to turn things around Wednesday night in the friendly confines of the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons (6-5, 2-3 KJCCC) play host to the Garden City Broncbusters (6-5, 2-4) at 7:30 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 7:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (analyst) calling the action. The game will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Hutchinson has had a full week to prepare for the Broncbusters after having its first of two conference bye weeks on Saturday. One week ago, the Blue Dragons dropped a tight battle with KJCCC co-leader Coffeyville, 81-77 at the Sports Arena.

The Dragons led 30-26 at halftime, holding the Red Ravens to 22.9 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes. Coffeyville shot 54.8 percent in the second half and pulled away in the final 3 minutes of the game.

That same Coffeyville team gave Garden City an 81-78 home loss on Saturday. Antonio Chol had a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead Garden City. Caleb Smith added 15 and Boston Harker had 14 for the Busters.

Under interim head coach Isaiah Tisdale, the Busters own solid wins over NOC-Tonkawa (101-91), Fort Hays Tech Northwest (97-89) and Independence (89-85). Garden has three losses of six or less points.

The Blue Dragons and Broncbusters play for the 196th time in a series that began in 1929. Hutchinson has dominated the series, owning a 144-51 all-time record against Garden City. The Dragons have won four straight games in the series.

The last seven meetings of this series have been particularly high scoring. Over the last seven games, Hutchinson and Garden City have averaged 192.3 combined points per game with the Dragons averaging 99.3 points per game and the Busters 93.0 points per game.

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team has two more games remaining before the Christmas break. The first of those two KJCCC battles comes Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons (11-0, 5-0 KJCCC) will play the Garden City Broncbusters (7-4, 6-2) at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. This will be the 100th all-time meeting between Hutchinson and Garden City in series history.

Hutchinson hit a season-high 15 3-point field goals - three each from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/norris_kahlen_2uos">Kahlen Norris</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/forbes_landon_o30r">Landon Forbes</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/duncan_katie_ofa1">Katie Duncan</a>&nbsp;- to jump out to a 35-13 at halftime lead. Norris had 13 points to lead the Dragons while&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/jackson_hailey_q6t6">Hailey Jackson</a>&nbsp;had 12 and Duncan scored 11 points.

The Blue Dragon defense limited Coffeyville to 2 of 27 shooting in the opening two quarters. The Blue Dragon defense has now held four consecutive opponents to less than 30-percent shooting and 23 turnovers per game.

Lubick, a coaching veteran of nearly 30 years, rejoins Kansas following one season as Nevada&apos;s offensive coordinator in 2024. Lubick served as a senior offensive analyst at Kansas from 2022-23, where he helped the Jayhawk offense thrive. In 2023, Kansas ranked inside the Top 25 in rushing offense (8th), scoring offense (17th), total offense (21st) and team passing efficiency (7th).

Nevada&apos;s offense averaged 5.9 yards per play and had the 10th&nbsp;highest completion percentage in the country at 67.5% in 2024. Lubick was later named Nevada&apos;s nominee for the Broyles Award, an award that honors the top assistant coach in college football.

In 2014, Lubick helped Oregon rank in the top-five in scoring offense and total offense, leading the Ducks to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

A Bozeman, Montana native, Lubick began his coaching career in 1995 as a student assistant and academic supervisor at Colorado State. In the three decades since, Lubick has risen through the ranks, first becoming an offensive coordinator in 2016, overseeing an Oregon offense which&nbsp;set school records for passing yards (4,687), completions (326) and first downs passing (198). Oregon ranked 13th nationally in completion percentage and 15th in total offense.

Lubick spent three seasons as the wide receivers coach at Duke from 2010 to 2012, helping the Blue Devils to a bowl game in 2012, a first for the program since 1994. Lubick was named Football Scoop&apos;s national Receivers Coach of the Year, as well as being one of three finalists for the AFCA National Assistant Coach of the Year award.

From 2007-09, Lubick served as Arizona State&apos;s defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator, leading the Sun Devils to rank among the top-20 defenses in pass efficiency defense. Lubick oversaw one top-20 recruiting class and two top-30 classes, while personally recruiting Vontaze Burfict, the highest-rated recruit in program history. Rivals named Lubick a top-10 recruiter in the then-Pac-10 Conference in each of his three years at ASU and twice Lubick was named one of the nation&apos;s top 25 recruiters.
 
Lubick&apos;s first time coaching wide receivers at a power-conference school came at Ole Miss from 2005-06, where he was a member of Ed Orgeron&apos;s staff. Lubick coached future NFL Pro-Bowlers Dexter McCluster and Mike Wallace while in Oxford.
 
Prior to his stop at Ole Miss, Lubick spent four years on his father&apos;s Colorado State staff, coaching wide receivers from 2001-04. He helped the Rams to the 2002 Mountain West title and three bowl games.

That's according to Olympians and other biathletes interviewed by The Associated Press. While the men climbed the sport's ranks, these women say they were forced to end their careers early. The women and others describe a culture of misogyny and say they faced retaliation for speaking up. ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (AP) — Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow's home was broken into during Monday Night Football in the latest home invasion of a pro athlete in the U.S. Authorities said Tuesday no one was injured in the break-in, but the home was ransacked. Deputies weren't immediately able to determine what items were stolen. Both the NFL and NBA issued alerts to players following prior break-ins, urging them to take precautions. The homes of Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were broken into in October. In the NBA, Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr. had their homes broken into.

WICHITA, Kan. --&nbsp;Wichita State middle blocker&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/morgan-stout/8985" rel="smarttag" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Morgan Stout</a>&nbsp;was named to the AVCA All-Central Region team on Tuesday. Stout recently completed her college career as one of the most accomplished middle blockers in Wichita State history, totaling 961 kills and 436 blocks over four seasons as a Shocker. After earning Second Team All-Conference honors in 2023, Stout became a true force in her senior campaign, leading all middle blockers nationally with 3.15 kills per set and ranking second with 3.95 points per set, hitting a team-best .320 in the process. She was tabbed First Team All-American Athletic Conference thanks in large part to a torrid stretch to finish conference play; over the final nine matches of the regular season, Stout recorded 13 kills or more in every match and had outings of 20 (2x), 22, and 23 terminations, establishing a new career high in the final regular season match against UTSA. She was named to the NCAA Volleyball Rotation of the Week after racking up consecutive kills-blocks double-doubles against Memphis and UAB, and earned two American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week Awards.&nbsp; Stout also developed into a legitimate weapon from the service line, firing 30 aces after totaling 14 in her first three seasons combined. In addition to her offensive prowess, the redshirt senior is averaging 1.01 blocks per set with a career-best 15 solo blocks and 113 block assists and has even set new career highs in both digs (111) and digs per set (0.87). The native of Fowler, Kansas was named the Most Outstanding Player of the American Athletic Conference Championship after leading the Shockers to the title. Over the course of the tournament, Stout averaged 4.67 points per set, hitting .345 with a team-high 35 kills. She also led the Shockers with eight block assists and added three aces, including the match-winning ace in Wichita State&apos;s quarterfinal victory over Tulsa. All told, Stout totaled 42 points in the tournament while reaching double-digit kills in all three matches. &nbsp; On November 25, Stout became the first Wichita State player drafted into the Pro Volleyball Federation, going with the 25th overall pick to the Vegas Thrill. </div>

LAWRENCE, Kan. — After recording her first career double-double in Kansas' 70-60 victory over Wichita State last Thursday, Jayhawk forward Regan Williams has been named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Williams set new career highs of 13 points and 11 rebounds as she recorded her first double-double as a Jayhawk, and the first by a Kansas player since the end of last season. She was 4-of-7 from the field and hit 5-of-9 free throws, while pulling down a career-best five offensive rebounds and six defensive boards in the win. Williams added one steal and one blocked shot in 31 minutes of action.

For the year, Williams is averaging 6.2 points and a team-leading 5.7 rebounds per game. She has started all nine games and played at least 15 minutes in each, and she's shooting a team-leading 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the field. Williams also leads the Jayhawks with five blocked shots this season.

From Kansas City, Missouri, Williams picks up her first career Big 12 weekly honor, while becoming the eighth Kansas player to be receive a Big 12 Freshman of the Week award. Williams is the first Jayhawk to earn the recognition since teammate S'Mya Nichols was named the recipient for the second time last season on Jan. 15, 2024.

Williams' performance helped the Jayhawks win their fourth-consecutive game and improve to 8-1 on the year. Kansas returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 11, hosting Kansas City at Allen Fieldhouse for a game that will tip off at 6 p.m.

The Royals Hall of Fame voting process includes two phases. Beginning with this cycle, the Regular Phase vote, which focuses on eligible former players and managers, will move from every other year to yearly. The Veterans Committee phase takes place in even-numbered years and considers both non-field personnel and alumni who have previously received Royals Hall of Fame (Regular Phase) votes but are no longer eligible for election in that manner. To be eligible for the first time, Royals Alumni must have been active with the club for at least three seasons and accumulated a minimum of 1,500 plate appearances or 300 innings pitched or managed the equivalent of three full seasons. Eligible alumni shall have ceased to be an active on-field member of the Royals (or for any other Major League organization) in the role for which they are being considered for at least three calendar years preceding the election. The 2025 vote includes five first-time eligible Royals Alumni and four that return after receiving at least ten percent of the vote in 2023.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Kansas volleyball team fell in a heartbreaking five sets to the Florida Gators in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night in the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena. 

"Yeah, certainly have an appreciation for what happened tonight," said Kansas Head Coach Ray Bechard. "Lasts two hours, 35 minutes, there was no break. There was no moment to collect your thoughts. You just had to go. And there are some levels of disappointment. Obviously, the 15-13, we had a couple controllables there that we didn't take care of. But beyond that, it's the two young ladies that are joining me here, and the other four in the locker room that developed in our program to a national college level, played their last match out there tonight. I'll forever be grateful for that group, what they did and how they gave us the opportunity to be in a moment like tonight."

The Jayhawks and the Gators played a closely contested first game despite Kansas' early momentum, quickly running up the score to lead 5-2. Florida gained a narrow lead midway through the set, up 13-11, but Kansas tied it up at 13's off a huge block assist by Caroline Bien and Reese Ptacek after a Florida attack error. From there, the Gators went on a 6-point unanswered run, and Kansas would finally be relieved by another Florida attack error. The Jayhawks were able to find their footing from there, and as they started to close back in, down 20-17, Florida called their first timeout of the match. A Bien ace out of the timeout followed by a Florida error on the attack and a huge solo block by Ptacek would bring the Jayhawks back to life, tied 20-20. More back and forth play would ensue, and with Florida leading 24-22, another KU timeout came. Florida took the first set 25-22. 

The second set started in similar fashion with a back and forth battle. The Jayhawks were then able to spark up a run, scoring five unanswered points making the score 9-5 in favor of the Jayhawks, triggering a Gator timeout. Kansas was able to carry this momentum and extend the lead to 16-10 following back-to-back kills from Bien. Florida went on to match Kansas's scoring, trading points before calling a timeout with the score 20-14 in favor of the home side. After back-to-back kills from Bien to push the lead to 24-19, the Jayhawks just needed one more to take the second. Florida was able to rally and score two points to make the score 24-21 before Ayah Elnady sealed the set for the Jayhawks with a kill in the clutch. 

Kansas got off to a hot start in the third, leading Florida 6-2 following back-to-back kills by Elnady. Florida was able to fight back and cut the lead to 8-7. The teams continued to battle while the score was knotted at 11-11. After two quick points from Florida, Kansas decided to call their first timeout of the set down 11-13. The Jayhawks continued to fight against Florida, following two Elnady kills to make the score 15-17. Florida rattled off two more to make things 15-19 before a Kansas timeout. Florida was able to carry their momentum through and pushed the lead to 24-16 before eventually winning the set 25-17. 

The fourth set started off the same as the previous three with a back-and-forth battle. Kansas got the early lead of 5-4, before a Florida response to tie the set at 5 all. Kansas was able to get some separation after a kill from Elnady to make the score 9-7 in favor of the Jayhawks. Kansas was able to hold their two-point lead after a huge block assist by Camryn Turner and Toyosi Onabanjo to make it 11-9. The Jayhawks heated up following kills from London Davis and Onabanjo to extend KU's lead to 17-13. An ace from Bryn McGehe out of the timeout pushed Kansas's lead to 18-13. The set continued with the same flow before Florida cut the lead to just two points. Florida served to give Kansas a three-point lead before the sides traded points with a kill from Elnady. A kill from London Davis out of Florida's timeout gave Kansas a 24-21 lead. Florida was able to rally back and tie the set at 24's, before a kill by Onabanjo to give Kansas the advantage 25-24. The Jayhawks would win it on a Gator attacking error, forcing things to a fifth.

Elnady ended her college career atop the kills leaderboard with 18 total, and Bien was close behind with 15. Turner surpassed 4,000 career assists, ending the night with a total of 43. She was also the digs leader with 14, while Elnady joined in her double digits with 10.

🏐 KU volleyball season over

MANHATTAN, Kan. — K-State Nation is heading back to the Valley of the Sun, as Kansas State officials announced Sunday afternoon that the Wildcats have accepted an invitation to play Rutgers in the Rate Bowl inside Chase Field – home of MLB's Arizona Diamondbacks – in Phoenix, Arizona. The game, which is the only bowl matchup between members of the Big 12 and Big Ten Conferences, will take place on Thursday, December 26 at 4:30 p.m. (CT) and air on ESPN.

This is the 19th time overall and the eighth time for a bowl game that the Wildcats will play in the state of Arizona. It is the fifth time K-State will play in what is now known as the Rate Bowl as it also played in the game in 1993 (known as Copper Bowl and played in Tucson, Arizona), 2001 (Insight.com Bowl), 2013 (Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl) and 2017 (Cactus Bowl).

"We are excited to spend the holidays in Arizona and represent the Big 12 and our University in the Rate Bowl," said K-State head coach Chris Klieman, the first head coach in school history to lead his team to five bowl games in his first six seasons. "The staff at the Fiesta Bowl runs a first-class operation, and I know our players and coaches are looking forward to the trip and the extra work on the field, which is critical to our continued development as a program."

K-State finished with an 8-4 regular-season record in 2024, marking the fourth-straight season the Wildcats have won at least eight games. The Wildcats are one of just nine Power 4 teams to win at least eight games in each of the last four seasons, joining Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Notre Dame, Clemson, Ole Miss, Oregon and Ohio State. The Wildcats have been among the nation's leaders in bowl appearances since 1993 as the Wildcats are tied for 16th nationally and rank second in the Big 12 with 25. K-State will also be one of just 15 Power 4 teams to play in a bowl game at least 13 times in the last 15 years.

Kansas State opened the 2024 campaign with a 7-1 record with wins over a pair of teams ranked No. 20 at the time in Arizona (31-7) and Oklahoma State (42-20), and the Wildcats were the only team this season to win at Colorado, a team that finished 23rd in the final College Football Playoff Top 25. Kansas State also retained the Governor's Cup with its 16th-straight win over Kansas, tied for the longest active uninterrupted winning streak in the nation. The Wildcats will be looking to right the ship from a 1-3 mark in November as they lost at Houston and to each of the Big 12 Championship Game participants, Arizona State and Iowa State.

K-State and Rutgers will meet for just the second time ever, and both matchups will be in bowl games, as the Scarlet Knights earned a 37-10 win over the Wildcats in the inaugural Texas Bowl in 2006. This is the fifth time in school history that Kansas State will face a Big Ten team in a bowl game with the last being a 31-14 victory over Michigan in the 2013 Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, which was also the last time overall that the Wildcats faced a Big Ten foe.

Rutgers finished the regular season with a 7-5 overall record and a 4-5 mark in conference action to tie for ninth place in the Big Ten. After starting the season 4-0 with wins over Howard, Akron, at Virginia Tech and against Washington, RU lost each of its next four games. However, Rutgers went 3-1 in November with wins over Minnesota, Maryland and Michigan State.

The Scarlett Knights are playing in a bowl game for the 13th time in school history and third time in the last four years. They lost to Wake Forest in the 2021 Gator Bowl and defeated Miami in last year's Pinstripe Bowl.

College Football Playoff's first 12-team bracket is set with Oregon No. 1 and SMU in, Alabama out

SMU captured the last open spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff, bumping Alabama to land in a bracket that placed undefeated Oregon at No. 1. The selection committee preferred the Mustangs, losers of a heartbreaker in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game, who had a far less difficult schedule than Alabama of the SEC but one fewer loss. INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams overcame Josh Allen's record six-touchdown performance to snap the Buffalo Bills' seven-game winning streak with a 44-42 victory. Matthew Stafford passed for 320 yards and hit Puka Nacua for a 19-yard touchdown with 1:54 to play for the Rams, who have won six of eight. Allen passed for 342 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 82 yards and three more scores for the Bills. Allen became the first player in NFL history with three passing TDs and three rushing TDs in a game.
