Hutchinson Community College freshman thrower Xylavene Beal had a tremendous debut for the Blue Dragon women's track and field team on Friday at the Washburn Rust Buster.
That debut included two national qualifications and one Blue Dragon indoor school record.
Beale, on Tuesday, was named the KJCCC Women's Track Field Athlete of the Week.
Beale broke the 1988 Blue Dragon shot put record of Ester Ikome with a record-breaking attempt of 47 feet, 8.5 inches. Beale placed third at the Rust Buster and posted the No. 1 shot put in the nation.
The Blue Dragon freshman also played ninth in the weight throw with a top throw of 50-4.75. That is the third-best throw in Blue Dragon indoor history and it ranks No. 5 in the NJCAA.
Beale qualified for the 2026 NJCAA Indoor championships in both events and she was one of four Blue Dragon athletes to break school record at the Rust Buster.
The Blue Dragons compete in the NAIA/JUCO Challenge on Saturday at Pittsburg State University.
