DODGE CITY – Sophomore Esther Karhayu scored two goals, including the eventual game winner with less than 14 minutes remaining, as the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team won a wild Jayhawk West matchup at Dodge City on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium.

The Blue Dragons improve to 6-3-3 overall and the Jayhawk West this season. The Blue Dragons complete a season sweep of the Conquistadors (3-9).

Tied at 3-all, freshman defender Zara Lawless picked off a pass and delivered a long pass right on the foot of Karhayu, who split two Dodge City defenders and scored the go-ahead with 13:44 to play in regulation time.

Lani Dickinson scored an insurance goal a minute later to cap the highest scoring match of the season for Hutchinson in terms of combined goals scored.

The three goals allowed were the second-most goals Hutchinson has surrendered in a victory in program history. Western Wyoming scored three games in an 11-3 Hutch win and Dodge City had three goals in a 6-3 Dragon win. Both of those matches were in 2014.

Karhayu had her second multi-goal game in the last three games. Dickinson also scored a pair of goals and Lawless added two assists in the Hutchinson victory.

The Blue Dragons also won their first game after allowing the opposing team to score the first goal of the game.

Dodge City scored in the 18th minute when Dieu-Donne Nelson took a rebound off a shot that hit the cross bar and buried her shot for a 1-0 lead. Dodge City keeper Pricilla Gonzales made for huge saves in the first half to stymie the Blue Dragons

The Dragons finally got on the board with 8:10 to play in the first half. Lawless played a 55-yard pass that Karhayu chased down and she moved in to score from 15 yards out to even the match at 1-1 which wound up being the halftime scored.

The highest scoring half of the season started when Aimee Maher buried a direct free kick from just outside the 18-yard box into the right side of the goal for a 2-1 lead with 42:12 to play.

Dodge City tied the match at 2-all 1:19 later.

Dickinson scored her first of the game unassisted with 29:25 left to go. Again, Dodge City scored with 23:26 to go.

After Karhayu scored with 13:44 to play, the Dragons added an insurance goal with Dickinson’s second goal of the game from a Chiara Stuenkel assist.

The Blue Dragons are scheduled to play at Garden City in a make-up contest on Sunday before opening the postseason next Tuesday at Coffeyville.

HutchCC up 12 shots after 3 rounds at nationals

INDIANAPOLIS — Beginning with the 2022-23 season, a 35-second shot clock will be permitted in high school basketball games by state association adoption. A proposal for a national rule mandating a shot clock was not approved.

A shot clock was&nbsp;among the topics discussed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee at its annual meeting April 20-22 held virtually this year. All recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Rule 2-14 states that each state association may adopt a shot clock beginning in the 2022-23 season -- according to guidelines outlined in the Basketball Rules Book -- to encourage standardization among states. Guidelines include displaying two time­pieces that are connected to a horn that is distinctive from the game-clock horn, and using an alternative timing device, such as a stopwatch at the scorer’s table, for a shot clock malfunction. The guidelines also allow for corrections to the shot clock only during the shot-clock period in which an error occurred and the officials have definite information relative to the mistake or malfunction.

“We provided the committee with a lot of information regarding the shot clock, including responses to a 46-question survey sent to states currently using a shot clock,” said Theresia Wynns, NFHS director of sports and officials and liaison to the Bas­ketball Rules Committee.

Rule 3-5-4e was added to allow players to wear head coverings for religious reasons without obtaining state association approv­al. The head covering shall not be made of abrasive or hard materials and must be attached so that it is highly unlikely to come off during play. Basketball is the sixth sport in which a rule related to the wearing of head coverings or other equipment for religious reasons has been adopted, following volleyball, field hockey, soccer, spirit and swimming.

The official signals were also modified to use the same hand signal for a player control foul and a team control foul. Officials should use Signal 36, which is a hand placed at the back of the head, for both types of fouls. Previously, a team control foul was communicated with a punch of the hand.

“It is redundant to have different signals to communicate that a foul will be charged to a member of the team in control of the ball,” Wynns said. “Officials don’t understand the need to differentiate between a player control foul and a team control foul, and many game participants, table personnel and fans don’t know the difference.”

Shot clock coming to high school basketball in 2022

WICHITA –&nbsp;The Wind Surge improved to 6-2 on the season with a 1-0 victory on Wednesday night at Riverfront Stadium, the first at their new stadium.

A pitcher’s duel from the beginning, the starters held both teams hitless through four, before a 4th inning double from Dominic Fletcher of the Sod Poodles. Four innings later, Jermaine Palacios knocked a single through the right side of the infield, marking the first hit for the Wind Surge.

Amarillo starter Ryan Weiss threw six scoreless innings, one walk, no hits, and six strikeouts in his second Sod Poodle’s appearance. Wichita starter Austin Schulfer worked five and a third innings, allowed no runs on one hit, one walked in his second start for the Surge. Ryan Mason threw an inning and a third in relief, with no hits allowed. Tom Hackimer picks up his second win of the year out of relief, with two punchouts.

After a slow offensive game, Bechtold lead off the bottom of the ninth with a single up the middle, followed by an error from the Sod Poodles on a de la Trinidad grounder, putting runners on second and third. Jose Miranda stepped up with one out in the bottom of the ninth and came through with a sacrifice fly to right field, capping off the victory for the Surge.

Miranda’s Sac Fly was not only his 8th and team-leading RBI, but the first walk-off victory in Wichita Wind Surge history.

Wichita and Amarillo will play the third game of the series on Thursday night, with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Wichita will start RHP Dakota Chalmers against Amarillo’s RHP Tyler Holton.

Royals drop 10th straight Wednesday in Detroit

The Hutchinson Community College baseball team begins its quest for its first Region VI championship since 2010 on Thursday.

The Blue Dragons will play the Highland Scotties in the opening game of the Region VI Hutchinson Sub-Regional at Noon Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field. Allen (31-17) and Colby (26-23) will play Game 2 at 3:30 p.m. An elimination game between the opening-round losers will take place at 7 p.m.

The sub-regional was moved up a day because of the potential for rain this weekend. The Overland Park and Arkansas City sub-regionals followed suit. The Liberal sub-region will start on Friday after Brent Gould Field is still trying out from rain last weekend.

The four sub-regional winners will play next week at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina in the super-regional.

The Blue Dragons would like the progression of the last two Region VI Tournament to continue. The Blue Dragons finished third in the 2018 Region VI Tournament and made their first tournament finals appearance in nine seasons in 2019. The 2020 Region VI Tournament was wiped out.

The Dragons enter the 2020 postseason 4-1 in their last five games.

Hutchinson has already set a new season record for home runs with 94 this season. The Blue Dragons hit 17 in a four-game series against Dodge City.

The Dragons are hitting .320 as a team and are averaging 9.5 runs per game.

Third baseman Austin Callahan is hitting .433 with 21 home runs and 70 RBIs – all three stats are team highs this season. Ben McLaughlin is hitting .433.

The Dragons have a team ERA of 6.29. Probable Game 1 starter Zach Firmature is 8-3 with a 4.71 ERA. Sammy Sanchez is 8-2 with a 2.62 ERA. Tyler Delong is 6-0 with five saves and a 2.20 ERA.

The Scotties are hitting .282 as a team and have 60 home runs this season. The Scotties have a team ERA of 10.37. Justin Carinsi is Highland’s top hitter with a .400 batting average. Gustavo Nava leads with 10 home runs. Joan is 1-4 with a 6.62 ERA,

Hutchinson did not play Highland this season and hasn’t met the Scotties in the postseason since 2012. The Scotties finished eighth in the Jayhawk East this season.

Grossman had five RBIs for the first time in his career, sending the Royals to their ninth straight loss. He ripped a two-out single off Scott Barlow in the ninth to score Niko Goodrum. The dramatic win masked a horrendous collapse for the major league-worst Tigers, who led 7-0 with two outs in the eighth. Mississippi says it awaits $600K repayment from Brett Favre

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say former NFL quarterback Brett Favre has yet to pay back $600,000 in money received from the state of Mississippi for multiple speaking events he never showed up for. 

The former athlete had previously said he would pay the state after an audit revealed $1.1 million had been paid to Favre's company, Favre Enterprises. Auditors said that was just a part of $94 million in welfare spending that was "questioned" in an audit last year, meaning auditors saw clear misspending or could not verify money was lawfully spent. Favre made an initial payment of $500,000 a year ago. He has not been accused of a crime. 

Famed Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan dead at age 37

HONOLULU (AP) — Former University of Hawaii star quarterback Colt Brennan has died. His father Terry Brennan says his son died early Tuesday at a California hospital. He was 37. 

Colt Brennan finished third in the 2007 Heisman Trophy balloting. He also had public struggles with alcohol. 

Terry Brennan says he took his son to an emergency room over the weekend because he had been drinking and wasn't doing well. But unbeknownst to his family, the hospital released him because the detox facility was full.

Report: U. of Michigan missed chances to stop doctor's abuse

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — A report says staff at the University of Michigan missed many opportunities to stop a doctor who committed sexual misconduct against hundreds of patients over decades at the school. 

The report released Tuesday by the WilmerHale firm comes more than a year after former students publicly accused the late Robert Anderson of molesting them. The report has acknowledged Anderson's abuse but hired the law firm for a comprehensive review. Some university officials at the time took no action despite being aware of complaints. 

BALTIMORE (AP) — Medina Spirit is set to run in the Preakness on Saturday to go for the second leg of the Triple Crown, as long as the Kentucky Derby winner passes a series of additional drug tests.

Maryland racing officials have reached an agreement with trainer Bob Baffert to allow Medina Spirit and his other horses to enter races this weekend at Pimlico Race Course subject to extra testing and monitoring.

Baffert says Medina Spirit was treated with an antifungal ointment containing the steroid betamethasone that may have caused the horse to fail a postrace drug test.

Baffert says Medina Spirit was treated with the ointment for dermatitis once a day leading up to the race and that experts have told him this could explain the test results. Baffert says the horse tested positive for 21 picograms of the substance, which would lead to a disqualification if upheld with another test.

Nadal not sure he'll go to Tokyo Olympics

ROME (AP) — Rafael Nadal has joined the growing number of tennis players expressing doubts about competing in the Tokyo Olympics, saying his status is uncertain.

Nadal says that in a normal world, he would never think about missing the Olympics, adding that everyone knows how important it has been to him to always play in the Olympics.

The Tokyo Olympics were postponed from 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Nadal is hesitant about competing this year because of the health situation.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Tying a program national tournament scoring record for the second-straight day, the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team extended its NJCAA Men’s Division I National Championship lead to 16 strokes on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons shot a second-straight team round of 8-under par 280 at The Rawls Course and are at 16-under 560 at the halfway mark of the 2021 championship.

Hutchinson leads Odessa by 16 strokes, Midland by 17 strokes and Western Texas by 18 strokes through 36 holes. Hutchinson entered the day leading the Championship by three shots. Odessa shot a 5-over 293 in the second round. Midland had a 294 and Western Texas had a 290 on Tuesday.

The key stat for Hutchinson through 36 holes is that the Blue Dragons are dominating the Par-5 holes. Hutchinson is -21 on the par 5s, while Midland is -7, Western Texas is -6 and Odessa is -4 on those same holes.

Hutchinson counted the scores of Harry Crockett (68), Charlie Crockett (70), Ben Partridge (71) and Cameron Rios-Ceballos (71) in the second round. Trey McCrae shot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday.

Harry Crockett and Partridge are the top two individual golfers through 36 holes. Rios-Ceballos is also I the Top 10 and all five Hutchinson players are no worse than a 22nd-place tie.

Harry Crockett leads the championship at the mid-point with a 7-under 137. He shot 69 on Monday. Crockett overcame a double-bogey on No. 12 with an eagle on No. 9 and five birdies, including a 35-footer for birdie on No. 13.

Partridge had a slow start on Tuesday with a double bogey on the first hole. He was 3-over through seven holes. Partridge battled back with four birdies over the final 11 holes, including two key two-putts for par on Nos. 12 and 13. Partridge is one stroke behind Harry Crockett at 6-under 138.

Rios-Ceballos turned in another strong round for the Dragons on Tuesday. After an opening-round 72, which consisted of 10-straight pars to opening the round, Rios-Ceballos shot a 1-under 71 in the second round. Rios-Ceballos countered a double bogey on No. 1 with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2 and 3. From that point, Rios-Ceballos is had five birdies, four bogeys and seven pars. Rios-Ceballos is in a five-way tie for seventh at 1-under 143.

Charlie Crockett bounced back for a six-stroke improvement from his opening round with a 2-under 70 on Tuesday. He had seven birdies in his round, none bigger than 25-foot birdie putt on No. 15.

McCrae shot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday. Both Charlie Crockett and McCrae are tied for 22nd at 2-over 146.

The Blue Dragons are once again slated to be paired with Odessa and Midland and will tee off for Wednesday’s third round from 2:20 to 3 p.m.

Dragons extend NJCAA lead to 16 strokes after two rounds

DERBY — The Buhler Crusader golf team won the AVCTL Division III league title Tuesday at Derby Country Club in a meet where coach Brennan Torgerson said every shot mattered, with an overall team score of 349. McPherson was second with 350.

Max Alexander was 2nd individually with an 81. Logan Day was 6th with an 86. Will Yates was 10th with 90.

Regionals will pit the Crusaders and Bullpups against each other again on Monday, this time on McPherson's home course at Turkey Creek.

7,908 were in attendance for the Wind Surge opener. The team was originally conceived as a Triple-A squad, but a reorganization of Minor League Baseball prompted by the pandemic dropped the Wichita franchise to the AA affiliate of the Minnesota Twins before they played a game in the ballpark.

The Wind Surge threatened in the eighth and ninth innings but Junior Garcia delivered a strike out to finish off the Wind Surge threat and earn his fourth save of the season for Amarillo.

Amarillo improved to 5-2 and the Wind Surge fall 5-2 on the season.

The homestand continues Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. with Austin Schulfer getting the start for Wichita.

Sod Poodles spoil Wind Surge opener in Wichita

LEVELLAND, Texas - Hutchinson Community College sophomore distance runner Teagan Flanagan added another chapter to a memorable 2020-21 cross country and track and field season on Tuesday.

Flanagan became a four-time Blue Dragon NJCAA All-American with a national runner-up performance in the 10,000 meters at the 2021 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at South Plains College.

Flanagan stayed with Northwest Tech’s Vincent Nchogo for all-but the final 600 meters, where Nchogu finally pulled away to claim the national championship.

Flanagan didn’t know his official time because of timing system issues on Tuesday, but Blue Dragon coaches said the sophomore from Kingman definitely posted a PR and likely broke the 1983 school record time of 32:12.44 by Bryon Lopez.

The Blue Dragons will find out Flanagan’s official time on Wednesday morning.

Flanagan is only the fourth Blue Dragon to earn All-America honors in the 10,000 in team history, the first since Orbelin Rojas in 2014.

Flanagan adds this All-America award to the first-team NJCAA cross country honors and first- and second-team All-America nods from the 20201 indoor championships, where he finished second in the 5,000 meters and third in the 3,000 meters.

Flanagan will close out his Blue Dragon career on Thursday with the 5,000-meter finals. Flanagan is fourth in the national in the 5,000 in the NJCAA this season with a time of 14:35.28.

Hutchinson high jumpers Wyatt Thiel, the 2021 Region VI champion, and Zac Biel are the only Blue Dragons on the meet schedule for Day 2 on Wednesday.

Both Brown and Martinez were Coaches’ White Card entries for head coach Robert Spies. Both Blue Dragon pole vaulters reached the medal stand.

Brown set a PR with a clearance of 10-feet, 6 inches on Tuesday. Brown tied for third with Mesa Community College vaulters Jamie Tinney and Jolynn Flemming.

Martinez placed sixth in the pole vault after clearing 10 feet.

Brown and Martinez are the first Blue Dragons to earn All-America honors in the event since Summer Casey placed fifth in 2019. The Blue Dragons now have nine All-Americans in the women’s pole vault.

Doll entered the national championship ranked third in the NJCAA. Her throw of 119 feet, 11 inches earned her a sixth-place finish on Tuesday. Doll is the 23rd Blue Dragon to earn All-America honors in the women’s javelin, the first since Katy Commons in 2019.

Sophomore Kiley Aldridge closed out her Blue Dragon career with a 14th-place showing in the women’s hammer throw on Tuesday. Aldridge fouled on her first two attempts before throwing 123-11 on her final attempt. Aldridge was ranked 10th in the NJCAA entering the national championships.

KC comes back, then falls short in Detroit Tuesday

Because of increasing chances of rain this weekend, the Region VI Baseball Tournament Hutchinson Sub-Regional has been moved up a day and will start on Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field.

The weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday prompted the Hutchinson Community College Athletic Department and Region VI officials to move the tournament up a day. The four-team double-elimination tournament will now run from Thursday through Saturday.

Sub-regional tournaments at Overland Park and Arkansas City have also made the change to Thursday through Saturday. Only the Liberal sub-regional maintained its original schedule and will open Friday.

The Hutchinson Blue Dragons (35-15) and Highland (9-32) open the sub-regional at Noon Thursday. Allen (31-17) and Colby (26-23) will play in the second opening-round game.

Admission will be $10 per person per day with kids age 5 and under admitted free.

All games from the Hutchinson sub-regional will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.

The four sub-regional winners move into the Region VI Super-Regional on May 22-24 at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.
