With the victory, the Shockers take three of four games from the Knights and improve to 25-18 overall and 13-10 in The American, while UCF falls to 23-25 on the season and 13-11 in conference action. Bartlett went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, while&nbsp;Seth Stroh&nbsp;went 2-for-3, including a home run, and&nbsp;Hunter Gibson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Paxton Wallace&nbsp;each had a pair of hits, pacing Wichita State at the plate. WSU reliever&nbsp;Aaron Haase&nbsp;(1-1) earned the win on the mound after throwing two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts. The Shockers and Knights each traded runs in the opening two innings, with each team scoring a run in the first and second innings, resulting in a 2-2 tie going into the top of the third. No. 1 Oklahoma captured the 2021 Big 12 softball regular season championship in a race that came down to the final day of the season. With the Bedlam series tied 1-1, the Sooners won the rubber match over No. 7 Oklahoma State, 11-8, for their ninth-consecutive and 12th&nbsp;overall Conference title. OU completed the regular season at 16-1 in league play and is 42-2 overall while OSU finished at 15-3 and holds a 40-8 record.

The Sooners earned the top seed and the Cowgirls wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship, which will be contested May 14-15 at USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City. The other four seeds are No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Baylor, No. 5 Iowa State and No. 6 Texas Tech.

The Championship format will consist of pool play on Friday, May 14 with a total of six games utilizing both Integris and OGE Energy fields. Two games will be played simultaneously at both 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. CT. Single contests are scheduled on OGE Energy Field at 5 and 7:30 p.m. CT. The opening game on OGE Energy Field will be televised on ESPNU with the others available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.&nbsp;

Saturday’s final round will feature the third-place (Integris) and second-place (OGE Energy) contests both taking place at 10:30 a.m. CT with each on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Sooners capture Big 12 softball regular season title

Springfield, MO – Aaron Whitefield belted a go-ahead two run home run in the seventh inning to give the Wind Surge a 3-2 victory over the Springfield in the opening road-trip. Wichita improves to 5-1 on the season.

The Cardinals grabbed an early lead scoring a run in the third inning with an RBI single from Nolan Gorman. Wichita battled back and tied it in the fifth with a two-out RBI single from Peter Mooney.

Springfield answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead, Ivan Herrera with a RBI single.

The Wind Surge trailed 2-1 when Mooney reached on a lead-off walk and Whitefield had a ten pitch at bat to deliver the go-ahead home run.

Josh Winder started the game and worked five innings in a no decision. The bullpen tandem of Alex Phillips and Josh Mitchell retired the final twelve Cardinals batters to pick up the win and the save. Salvador Justo took the loss.

The Surge improved to 5-1 on the season and lead the division by a game and a half. The victory is the third come from behind win of the season.

Shockers claim first AAC Title; Clinch No. 1 Seed

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team needed only 14 plays to produce a school-record single offensive quarter on Sunday at Gowans Stadium.

Hutchinson scored 49 points in the first quarter and rolled by the Highland Scotties, 77-7, in a Jayhawk Conference Mother's Day battle.

The Blue Dragons start a season 6-0 for just the sixth time in program history, the first since 2014. Sitting 5-0 in the KJCCC, Hutchinson can win its first league championship since 2014 with a victory next Sunday against Dodge City at Gowans Stadium. Dating back to the 2019 season, the Blue Dragons have won eight games in a row.

Highland dropped its fifth-straight game and fell to 1-5. The Scotties have now been outscored 267-24 in those five losses.

Hutchinson's 49-point first quarter broke the old record of 41 points (second quarter) set in 2019 against RPA. The Blue Dragons amassed 271 yards total offense on just 14 plays, seven of those plays were for touchdowns. The most plays needed to score on a single possession in the first quarter was just four plays. Hutchinson had three one-play scoring drives in the quarter.

The Blue Dragon defense helped set up their offense with three interceptions, all coming in Highland territory. The Dragons also sacked Highland quarterback Quinn Buessing seven times in the first quarter.

Hutchinson had four touchdowns in the first 5 minutes, 35 seconds of the game.

The scoring explosion started when quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/laible_dylan_mrze">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/braham_cortes_6fw6">Cortez Braham</a>&nbsp;for a 7-0 lead. After linebacker&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/davis_jurriente_hvgl">Jurriente Davis</a>&nbsp;returned an interception 18 yards to the Highland 1,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/lewis_anwar_oe0l">Anwar Lewis</a>&nbsp;plunged into the end zone for a 14-0 lead.

Linebacker&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/spraggins_gereme_o8ob">Gereme Spraggins</a>&nbsp;returned an interception on the Scotties' next possession 18 yards to the Highland 18. Laible then threw his third touchdown pass of the period, this one 18 yards to&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/thomas_ivan_quha">Ivan Thomas</a>&nbsp;for a 28-0 lead with 9:25 to play in the opening quarter.

After a Highland punt, Cory McKnight capped off a four-play, 68-yard scoring march with a 6-yard touchdown run.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/wilson_daquan_vy1a">Daquan Wilson</a>'s interception at the Scotty 25 setup&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/edwards_tye_vovm">Tye Edwards</a>' 25-yard touchdown run on the next play for a 42-0 lead with 3:34 to play.

Hutchinson's record-setting quarter was capped on the final play of the first period. Back-up quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/cash_daisean_h1fz">Daisean Cash</a>&nbsp;broke loose for a 68-yard touchdown run and a 49-0 lead just 15 minutes into the game.

The Blue Dragons scored twice in the second quarter.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/gilbert_marquise_o0s7">Marquise Gilbert</a>&nbsp;intercepted a Highland pass at the Dragon goal line and returned it a school-record 100 yards for a touchdown.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/kedzior_dylan_cbc8">Dylan Kedzior</a>&nbsp;made it 63-0 at halftime in a 23-yard touchdown run.

McKnight scored his second touchdown of the game with 6:39 to play in the third quarter on an 11-yard run. After Highland scored its only touchdown early in the fourth quarter, the Blue Dragons special teams joined in as Emmanuel Mann plucked the ball out of mid-air on a Highland punt attempt and ran it in from 3-yards out for a 77-7 lead with 4:04 to go in the game.

Hutchinson had its second-straight 500-yard game with 511 yards of total offense – 328 rushing yards and 183 passing yards. The Dragons committed three turnovers and were penalized 17 times for 184 yards.

Defensively, the Blue Dragons dominated Highland holding the Scotties to a minus 1-yard of total offense. Highland rushed for a negative 40 yards and threw for 39. Five of Highland's eight first downs came from Hutchinson penalties. The Dragons forced six turnovers and had 11 quarterback sacks.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/pinkley_tre_bmqr">Tre Pinkney</a>&nbsp;had a career-high four sacks and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/moss_jaylon_a7qv">Jaylon Moss</a>&nbsp;had three sacks. Moss was Hutch's leading tackler with six.

Kedzior led the Blue Dragons with 89 rushing yards on 10 carries. Cash had 76 yards on five attempts.

NBA fines Pelicans' Griffin $50,000 for detrimental comments

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA has fined New Orleans Pelicans executive David Griffin $50,000 for publicly criticizing officiating and making comments the league considered detrimental. 

The Pelicans' executive vice president of basketball operations spoke out strongly about his concerns over the amount of contact NBA referees allow New Orleans forward Zion Williamson to endure.

Williamson is out indefinitely with a broken left index finger. Griffin said Friday that the Pelicans have told league officials many times that they feared Williamson was being exposed to injury because of the way defenders are allowed to play against him. 

CHICAGO (AP) — Just two games were on Sunday's schedule, neither of which involved a playoff contender.

Alex DeBrincat (deh-BRIN'-kat) scored twice and Kevin Lankinen made 37 saves as the Blackhawks doubled up the Stars, 4-2. Chicago hosted a crowd of 3,820 for its first home game with fans in almost 14 months.

Blue Jackets and Coyotes part with their coaches

UNDATED (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes and Columbus Blue Jackets will have new head coaches next season. The Coyotes parted ways with Rick Tocchet (TAH'-keht) and the Blue Jackets did the same with John Tortorella. 

The Coyotes were fourth in the West Division on April 5 before losing 12 of their next 15 games to miss the playoffs for the seventh time in eight years. 

The Jackets reached the playoffs in each of their first four full seasons under Tortorella, but they finished last in the Central Division this year at 18-26-12.

DeGrom's injury scare continues, Mets win 5th straight

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Mets completed a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 4-2 victory, but they finished the game without their ace.

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom took himself out before the sixth inning due to tightness in his right side. He was pitching for the first time since skipping a start due to discomfort in his right lat.

DeGrom allowed just one hit over five innings, retiring the first 12 Diamondbacks. He was scheduled for an MRI on Sunday.

Michael Conforto had two hits, an RBI and a super catch against the right field wall, helping the Mets win their fifth straight and improve to 16-13.

The Diamondbacks have dropped six in a row.

— Freddie Freeman was 1-for-24 this month before hitting one of the Braves' two home runs in a 6-1 whipping of the Phillies. Churchill Downs suspends Baffert after Derby winner tests positive

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Medina Spirit's victory in the Kentucky Derby is in serious jeopardy because of a failed postrace drug test. 

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert called a news conference to announce that Medina Spirit tested positive for an excessive amount of the steroid betamethasone that is sometimes used to treat pain and inflammation in horses. 

Churchill Downs immediately suspended Baffert and said Medina Spirit would be disqualified if the drug findings were upheld. Baffert denied all wrongdoing and promised to be fully transparent with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission during its investigation.

Medina Spirit is Baffert's fifth horse known to have failed a drug test in just over a year.

If he is disqualified from the Derby, second-place finisher Mandaloun will be declared the winner.

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. powered his way around Darlington Raceway, sweeping both stages and leading the final 105 laps in Sunday's victory.

Kyle Larson cut into Truex's often large lead over the final 30 laps and came as close as two car-lengths down the stretch. But the Joe Gibbs Racing driver held him off for his third victory of the season. 

Truex is the only multi-race winner on the Cup circuit this season.

Larson settled for second, followed by Kyle Busch, William Byron and Denny Hamlin.

Hamilton wins Spanish GP ahead of Verstappen

MONTMELÓ, Spain (AP) — Lewis Hamilton beat Max Verstappen in a thrilling duel to win the Spanish Grand Prix and increase his championship lead over his top rival. 

Hamilton's 98th career win came a day after taking his 100th career pole. Hamilton increased his lead to 14 points over Verstappen, who grabbed a bonus point for the fastest lap. Hamilton's teammate Valtteri Bottas steered his Mercedes to a third-place finish. 

McIlroy ends 18-month drought by winning at Quail Hollow

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rory McIlroy is a winner again after 18 long months. McIlroy closed with a 68 for a one-shot victory in the Wells Fargo Championship, his third win at Quail Hollow.

He had a two-shot lead going to the 18th hole when he put his tee shot in the hazard. After choosing to take a penalty drop, he hit an 8-iron to the green and two-putted for the win.

Runner-up Abraham Ancer (AN'-sur) closed with a 66.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Alex Cejka (CHAY'-kah) has won the Regions Tradition in only his third PGA Tour Champions start, beating defending champion Steve Stricker with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

The 50-year-old Cejka made a 14-foot birdie putt on 18 and Stricker missed a 9-footer with a chance to extend the playoff at Greystone Golf &amp; Country Club.

Cejka had turned a three-stroke deficit into a two-shot lead over the final nine holes for a 5-under 67.

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Hutchinson Community College softball team's postseason run came up a game short of a Region VI championship game berth on Sunday at Legends Park.

For the second-straight game, the Blue Dragons were held in check offensively and the Barton Cougars took advantage with a 9-1 win over Hutchinson in five innings in the Region VI Tournament losers' bracket final.

Hutchinson's season comes to an end at 29-17 and a third-place finish in the region. The Blue Dragons finished second in the Jayhawk East behind Butler. That finish was one place higher than the preseason coaches' poll predicted Hutchinson would finish.

Barton advanced to the championship game where No. 3 Butler defeated the Cougars 10-0 later on Sunday.

The Cougars took early command of the losers' bracket final with a seven-run second inning. The Cougars had a 9-0 lead before the Blue Dragons had their first hit of the game.

That came from a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/miller_haley_c81y">Haley Miller</a>&nbsp;bunt single in the fourth inning. Blue Dragon Softball Season ends with 3rd-place Region VI finish

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Not even five minutes of game time had elapsed Sunday afternoon before No. 1 Hutchinson (6-0) built a 21-0 advantage on Highland (1-5).

The Scotties were held to negative 9 yards in the first half of play.

Dylan Laible started at quarterback for the Blue Dragons after C.J. Ogbonna left last week's game against Independence with an ankle injury.&nbsp;

Laible connected with Cortez Braham on a 42-yard strike to open up the scoring.&nbsp;

A Jurriente Davis interception led to an Anwar Lewis 1-yard touchdown 22 seconds later.&nbsp;

On Hutchinson’s next possession, Laible hit Cam Henderson for a 27-yard touchdown. With 10:17 left in the first quarter, Hutchinson had a commanding 21-0 lead.

But the Dragons did not stop there.&nbsp;

Laible got his third passing touchdown to Ivan Thomas from 18 yards out after Gereme Spraggins intercepted a Quinn Buessing pass. Buessing was 3 of 12 and threw three interceptions.&nbsp;

Touchdown runs from Corey McKnight (6 yards), Tye Edwards (25 yards) and Daisean Cash (68 yards) capped off a 49-point first quarter.&nbsp;

Dylan Laible's day was done before the first quarter ended. He finished with three touchdown passes on 4-of-5 passing. Laible threw for 115 yards.&nbsp;

The second quarter went five minutes before Hutchinson’s first score. The points came on a 100-yard pick-six from Marquise Gilbert.

Dylan Kedzior then scored on a 23-yard scamper to put the Dragons up 63-0.

Kedzior led the Dragon rushing attack with 89 yards. Daisean Cash ran for 76 yards and threw for another 58.

Corey McKnight ran the ball in from 11 yards out for the only score of the third quarter.&nbsp;

Highland got on the board with 9:39 left on a Mustapha Yekini 21-yard run. The backup quarterback pulled the ball down on 4th and 5 when no receivers were open.&nbsp;

Emmanuel Mann finished the scoring when a lateral to backup punter Zach Westfall got away from him. Highland snapped the ball to an upback who turned and threw the ball backward to Westfall. The ball bounced off Westfall's chest before Mann snagged it out of the air and walked in for the TD.

Highland's offense finished the day with negative 1 total yards. The Dragon defense had 4 interceptions and 11 sacks.&nbsp;

Hutchinson is now 6-0 and will close out the regular season next Sunday in Gowans Stadium against Dodge City.

With two games remaining, the Blue Dragons control their path to an outright Jayhawk Conference title with home games remaining against Highland (1-4) on Sunday and Dodge City (1-3) next week.

Kickoff for Sunday's Mother's Day matchup against the Scotties is 1 p.m.

The Blue Dragons made it through the toughest part of their 2021 schedule with resounding wins over a pair of nationally ranked opponents - 23-7 over No. 3 Garden City on April 25 and 42-24 at No. 7 Independence last Sunday night.

The Blue Dragons are 4-0 in the Jayhawk Conference, followed by Garden City at 4-1, Coffeyville at 3-2 and Independence at 3-2.

Last week against the Pirates, back-up quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/laible_dylan_mrze">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;came off the bench for an injured C.J. Ogbonna and threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns against a very good Pirate defense. Receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/braham_cortes_6fw6">Cortez Braham</a>&nbsp;posted career highs of six receptions, 141 yards and became the first Blue Dragon receiver since 2014 to catch three touchdown passes in a game.

Defensively, the Blue Dragons limited Indy's vaunted rushing attack to 84 net yards, holding Tavion Thomas, the No. 4 rusher in the NJCAA to 35 yards on 12 carries.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/gilbert_marquise_o0s7">Marquise Gilbert</a>&nbsp;had two second-half interceptions that thwarted a Pirate comeback attempt.

Highland beat Fort Scott 30-14 in its season opener but as dropped four straight since by an aggregate score of 190-17. Last week, the Scotties lost to Butler 34-7 in El Dorado.

The Scotties rank last in scoring offense, but are second in passing yards at 219.8 yards per game. Highland quarterback Quinn Buessing is completing 61.7 percent of his passes for 212.8 yards per game with three touchdowns and nine interceptions. Receivers Deontay Campbell, Cam McKinney and Raequan Prince have combined for 72 receptions, 830 yards and four touchdowns.

One year ago, the Blue Dragons went into the Highland game undefeated and ranked No. 1 only to get upset by the Scotties 29-27.

Sunday's matchup is the 39th in series history. The Blue Dragons own a 33-5 all-time record, including 21-0 all-time at Gowans Stadium.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Oklahoma State freshman Justin Campbell threw the 11th no-hitter in school history and just the third in a nine-inning game, striking out 11 in a 19-0 victory over Kansas. The right-hander from Simi Valley, California, walked just one with one out in the eighth inning to join Bob Richardson in 1968 and Jim Wixson in 1960 as the only Cowboys to toss individual nine-inning no-hitters. The second-year freshman is also the ninth pitcher in Oklahoma State's 110-year history to toss an individual no-hitter with the other two combined efforts.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A federal judge has &nbsp;ruled a lawsuit brought by a group of former Iowa football players alleging a culture of staff members mistreating Black players can move forward. All or parts of some of the allegations have been thrown out. Offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz and former strength coach Chris Doyle remain the focal points of the lawsuit filed in Iowa's southern district. The 13 plaintiffs allege they were demeaned with racial slurs, forced to abandon Black hairstyles, fashion and culture to fit the "Iowa Way" promoted by head coach Kirk Ferentz and retaliated against for speaking out.

UNDATED (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers are another step closer to claiming the No. 1 seed in the NBA's Eastern Conference playoffs.

Carter, Lagace help Pens win division crown

The Penguins capped their regular season with a 1-0 win over the Sabres as Maxime Lagace (mak-SEEM' LA'-gah-see) stopped 28 shots in his first career shutout. Lagace was in goal after Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith were sidelined.

Jeff Carter scored his 17th goal and fifth in two games to help the Penguins finish 13-2-1 over their final 16 games. Carter scored nine times in 14 games after coming over from the Kings.

The Penguins clinched when the Capitals were unable to beat the Flyers in regulation.
