May 3, 2022 – Juco baseball heads to Manhattan as the 2022 NJCAA Central District (Region VI) Tournament runs May 17-21. Tointon Family Stadium, home of the Kansas State Wildcat baseball team, will serve as tournament host.

“We have been nomads since Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita came down, so we looked for a first-class stadium experience for our athletes and fans,” said Mike Saddler, Region VI men’s director.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Several stadiums and locations were explored.

“We enjoyed being at Eck Stadium on the Wichita State University campus, but their schedule did not work with ours this year,” said Saddler.

Kansas State baseball facilities had the full week open the KJCCC colleges needed. The stadium seats 2,331, has ample facilities for press and media members, and plenty of concessions for families and fans.

“They are excited to have us in Manhattan,” said Saddler.&nbsp;&nbsp;“It’s a wonderful facility – great for teams and fans. This stadium is fitting for our level of play.”

The KJCCC East winner will be the top seed of the tournament this year, while the KJCCC West winner will be the number two seed.

Game start times for the first three days will be 10am, 1pm, 4pm, and 7pm. Tickets will be available online at&nbsp;<a href="http://kjccc.org/tickets" target="_blank">kjccc.org/tickets</a>

Hutchinson Community College sophomore thrower Hannah Schrock was named the Jayhawk Conference’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.

Schrock had a huge day on Saturday at the Butler Invitational. Her day included two national championship qualifications and three personal records.

Schrock, a native of Hutchinson, started her day with a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw with a national-qualifying and personal-record throw of 142-feet, 1 inches. That throw ranks No. 11 in Blue Dragon history.

The Blue Dragon sophomore then qualified for nationals in the discus with a second-place effort in the discus with a throw of 132 feet, 9 inches.

Schrock finished off her huge day with a second-place finish in the shot put with a national-qualifying and career-best mark of 36 feet, 3 inches.

Schrock is the first Blue Dragon women’s athlete and the third overall Blue Dragon athlete to earn KJCCC Weekly track and field honors. Men’s thrower Antonio Cooper has twice won the men’s Field Athlete of the Week award this season, once indoor and once outdoor.

Schrock and the Blue Dragons begin competition in the Region VI Outdoor Championships beginning Friday at Broncbuster Stadium in Garden City.

UNDATED (AP) — Scott Frost will not be allowed to perform his coaching duties for five consecutive days this football season as part of Nebraska's negotiated settlement with the NCAA for allowing an unauthorized staff member to do hands-on special teams coaching in 2020. The NCAA said Frost failed to monitor former special teams analyst Jonathan Rutledge's activities. Rutledge was found to work directly with players during special teams drills and assist or make tactical decisions in games. Among other penalties are a $10,000 fine, probation through April 2023 and removal of non-coaching staff members from practice or competition for five days.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Derby is moving closer to normalcy after two years of upheaval amid COVID-19 restrictions. UNDATED (AP) — The Phoenix Suns team that bulldozed through the regular-season schedule reappeared in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals.

Deandre Ayton scored 25 points, Devin Booker added 23 and the top-seeded Suns rolled to a 121-114 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

The Suns never trailed, jumping to a 9-0 lead in the opening minutes and staying on the gas until the final minutes. They shot 50.5% from the field, won the rebounding edge 51-36 and beat the Mavericks for the 10th straight time, counting regular season games.

NEW YORK (AP) — Robinson Canó has been cut by the New York Mets with nearly $45 million remaining on his contract, ending an ill-fated marriage and perhaps signaling the end of his decorated major league career.

The 39-year-old Canó sat out last season while serving his second suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. He was relegated to a part-time role this season, batting .195 with one homer, three RBIs and a paltry .501 OPS in 43 plate appearances.

Flores lawyer: Unconscionable for Goodell to arbitrate suit

NEW YORK (AP) — A lawyer for an NFL coach who sued the league over alleged racist hiring practices has told a judge that arbitration is the wrong way to resolve the lawsuit in part because NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would be the arbitrator.

Attorney Douglas Wigdor said in Manhattan federal court Monday that the league wanted to force "behind closed doors" the claims of Brian Flores and two other Black coaches. Flores filed the lawsuit in February, claiming the league was "rife with racism" even as the NFL publicly condemns it.

— An independent investigation launched by the NFL has found no evidence the Cleveland Browns purposely lost games during the 2016 and 2017 seasons as former coach Hue Jackson claimed. The league says "none of the allegations could be substantiated." In February, Jackson said Browns owner Dee and Jimmy Haslam incentivized people in the organization to lose over a four-year period.

— Arizona Cardinals three-time All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins has been suspended six games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. UNDATED (AP) — Scott Frost will not be allowed to perform his coaching duties for five consecutive days this football season as part of Nebraska's negotiated settlement with the NCAA for allowing an unauthorized staff member to do hands-on special teams coaching in 2020.

The NCAA said Frost failed to monitor former special teams analyst Jonathan Rutledge's activities. Rutledge was found to work directly with players during special teams drills and assist or make tactical decisions in games.

— Alabama cornerback Eli Ricks was arrested in Mississippi on charges of speeding, not having insurance and a first offense possession of marijuana. Ricks is battling for a starting spot in Alabama's secondary after transferring from LSU. He was a five-star recruit who earned third-team Associated Press All-America honors as an LSU freshman.

Chase Elliott wins at Dover to snap 26-race winless streak

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Chase Elliott snapped a 26-race winless streak when the 2020 NASCAR champion pulled away down the stretch to win the rain-delayed Cup Series race at Dover Motor Speedway.

Elliott led the final 53 laps and won his 14th career Cup race.

He made it another win for Hendrick Motorsports on the mile concrete track. Elliott followed teammate Alex Bowman's checkered flag a year ago, and a Hendrick driver won for the 22nd time at Dover.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was second and had his first top-five finish of the season for JTG Daugherty Racing. Ross Chastain was third for Trackhouse Racing. Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell finished fourth.

The race was red-flagged Sunday with teammates Kyle Larson and Elliott sitting first and second.

AP source: WNBA to honor Griner with decal on teams' floor

UNDATED (AP) — The WNBA will honor Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner with a floor decal, a person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press.

The decal will feature Griner's initials "BG" as well as her No. 42. All 12 teams will have the decal on their home courts starting with the season opener Friday night.

Griner is still being detained in Russia.

The league's Board of Governors also approved Phoenix paying Griner's salary and not have it count against the cap, according to a different person familiar with that decision told the AP.

Russian teams out of soccer championships

GENEVA (AP) — The Union of European Football Associations has kicked Russian soccer teams out of the Women's European Championship, the next men's Champions League and qualifying for the 2023 Women's World Cup.

The latest round of sporting sanctions come in response to Russia's war on Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Finland and Sweden will ban from their national ice hockey teams any players who appear in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League next season.

GLENVILLE, WV—The 2022 DII NCAA Women's Basketball National Champion has received a letter of intent from Hutchinson Community College shooting guard Tor'e Alford. 

Alford, a Derby graduate, averaged 12.5 points per game in her three-season career with the Hutchinson Blue Dragons.

Asked what played into here choosing Glenville State, "I really like that (the program winning its first national championship), and the coaching staff was really nice," Alford said. "I think my third year at Hutch really helped me academically, plus I was able to work on my game more."

Alford was a second-team all-Jayhawk conference selection.&nbsp;

Glenville State University went 35-1 last season and won the DII National Championship 85-72 over Washington State. The Pioneers play in the Mountain East Conference.

Lord coached in Kansas at Wichita Collegiate High School, Barton Community College and Pittsburg State University. Kailahi joins the program after spending last season at Hutchinson Community College where she helped her team to a Jayhawk Conference Co-Championship, a Region VI Championship, and a trip to the NJCAA Tournament. This past season, Kailahi played in 35 games while starting in 34 of them and averaged 11.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. Kailahi shot 39.8 percent from three-point range, which ranked her 24th&nbsp;in all of junior college, while also posting an 86.8 free throw shooting percentage, which ranked her seventh.&nbsp; Kailahi was named KJCCC Newcomer of the Year while also earning All-Conference and All-Region Third Team honors, and NJCAA All-Tournament Team honors.&nbsp; "We are very excited about the addition of Mele Kailahi to our program," Lord said. "Mel comes to us from a very successful junior college program at Hutchinson Community College. Kailahi joins the program after spending last season at Hutchinson Community College where she helped her team to a Jayhawk Conference Co-Championship, a Region VI Championship, and a trip to the NJCAA Tournament. This past season, Kailahi played in 35 games while starting in 34 of them and averaged 11.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. The Wild nudged ahead of the Blues by winning their last two games to finish second in the Central Division and earn the extra home game for the first-round series. Facing the Blues right away is hardly a reward. The Wild had the best goal differential in the league over the last six weeks at plus-30. The Blues were tied for second at plus-24. Warriors rally after Green ejected, beat Grizzlies; Bucks beat Celtics 101-89; Giannis triple-double

UNDATED (AP) — Klay Thompson hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 36 seconds left, and the Golden State Warriors overcame Draymond Green's first-half ejection to edge the Memphis Grizzlies 117-116 in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals.

Jordan Poole led the Warriors with 31 points off the bench. Stephen Curry added 24 points.

Memphis had a chance at the game-winner. This time Ja Morant's last-second layup went over the rim. Morant finished with 34 points and 10 assists.

Green was called for a Flagrant 2, sending him to the locker room just before halftime. After reviewing the play, the official explanation was that Green hit Brandon Clarke in the face and threw him to the court on a follow-through.

In the other NBA series getting started Sunday, Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH'-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON'-poh) had his second career postseason triple-double to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 101-89 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Penguins' All-Star goalie Jarry to miss start of playoffs

UNDATED (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins will begin their first-round playoff matchup with the New York Rangers without goaltender Tristan Jarry.

Head coach Mike Sullivan characterized Jarry as "day to day" but indicated he would not be available when the best-of-seven series opens in New York on Tuesday.

Jarry hasn't played since being diagnosed with a lower-body injury following a victory over the New York Islanders on April 14.

Casey DeSmith will get the nod when the Penguins head to Madison Square Garden.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have released veteran quarterback Nick Foles.

Foles was third string last year behind Justin Fields and Andy Dalton. He started one game with the other two quarterbacks injured.

Foles was MVP of Super Bowl 52 when he was with Philadelphia.

The Bears have signed Trevor Siemian to back up Fields.

Rahm hangs on to win Mexico Open for 1st win since US Open

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) — Jon Rahm is a winner again and it wasn't easy.

Rahm has won the Mexico Open with a 69 in the final round at Vidanta Vallarta. The Spaniard now has 14 wins worldwide and seven on the PGA Tour. He says he could have done without the stress.

Rahm never fell behind. But after he missed an easy birdie conversion on the par-5 12th, he suddenly found himself in a four-way tie for the lead.

Brandon Wu shot 63. So did Tony Finau. Kurt Kitayama joined them. But then Rahm birdied the 14th, and he held on with pars.

Alker emerges from rain for 4-shot win on Champions Tour

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — Steven Alker is now the man to beat on the PGA Tour Champions.

One week after he threw away a chance to win, Alker shot 66 on Sunday for a four-shot victory in the Insperity Invitational.

The final round was delayed two hours by rain. Alker was leading by one shot over Steve Stricker. After the rain, Alker played a six-hole stretch in 6-under par to build a four-shot lead.

It was Alker's second win this year and he now leads the Charles Schwab Cup.

Marina Alex wins LPGA Tour's Palos Verdes Championship

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. (AP) — Marina Alex won the Palos Verdes Championship on Sunday for her second LPGA Tour title.

Alex broke a tie with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 16th and parred the final two holes for a one-stroke victory over Jin Young Ko.

Three strokes behind Hannah Green entering the round, Alex closed with a 5-under 66 to finish at 10-under 274 at hilly and windy Palos Verdes Golf Club. The top-ranked Ko also shot a 66.

Nadal, Djokovic slam Wimbledon ban on Russian players

MADRID (AP) — Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic say Wimbledon acted unfairly in barring Russian and Belarus players from this year's tournament following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Chris Vallimont took the hill for Wichita and pitched four innings allowing three runs on four hits, four walks, and four strikeouts before being relieved in the fifth inning with Arkansas holding a 3-1 lead.

Sturgeon hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to cut into the lead and Alex Isola hit a go-ahead two run homer in the sixth inning making it 4-3 Wichita lead. The Wind Surge bullpen had another stellar afternoon, relieving Vallimont in the fifth inning and posting five shutout innings and allowing just two hits on five strikeouts.
