MIAMI (AP) — Joel Embiid (joh-EHL' ehm-BEED') has a right orbital fracture and a mild concussion and the Philadelphia 76ers say the MVP finalist is out for the foreseeable future.

Embiid was injured late in Philadelphia's victory at Toronto on Thursday night, when the 76ers were closing out the Raptors and finishing off a six-game win in an Eastern Conference first-round series.

The win sent fourth-seeded Philadelphia into the East semifinals against top-seeded Miami, a matchup that begins Monday night. But Embiid's status is now very much in doubt. A similar fracture, to his left orbital bone, kept him out for about three weeks — spanning 10 games, including two playoff games against the Heat.

Bauer is vowing to overturn the discipline before an arbitrator.

The suspension covers 324 games without pay and if left in place would cost the 31-year-old pitcher just over $60 million.

The 2020 National League Cy Young Award winner was placed on administrative leave last July under the joint domestic violence and sexual assault policy of MLB and the players' association.

Fehr has been in charge of the union since December 2010. Fehr led players through two rounds of collective bargaining negotiations in 2013 and 2020. He will remain in his job until a successor is found by a seven-player committee.

An investigation recently found he was not at fault for the NHLPA's handling of sexual assault allegations made by a player early in his tenure.

Seemed forever for QBs to go in 1st 2 rounds of NFL draft

LAS VEGAS (AP) — It took 42 selections Friday before a second quarterback was taken in the NFL draft.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Salthawk Baseball team had the lead in both game Friday night at Hobart-Detter field but then saw Maize battle back to run rule Hutch in both games.&nbsp; Maize rallied to win the first game 16-6 in 5 innings after trailing 6-3 to the Salthawks.&nbsp; In game 2, Hutchinson had a 3-2 lead that didn't last long to see Maize come back to win 17-3 in five innings.&nbsp; The last 3 innings were played in tough conditions as the weather turned and 50 mph winds made conditions really tough.

Both pitching staffs had their hands full on Friday in a high-scoring affair where Maize bested&nbsp;Hutchinson Salthawks Varsity, 16-6. Hutchinson&nbsp; struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Maize, giving up 16 runs. Maize got things moving in the first inning, when&nbsp;Jaden Gustafson&nbsp;tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring Avery Johnson.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Salthawks Varsity notched six runs in the second inning. Jax Heneha, Caiden Beavers, Kinser Newquist , and Lakin Franz each drove in runs during the inning.&nbsp;

In the third Hutchinson pitchers struggled to find the plate walking three straight batters. Avery Johnson then doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring three runs,&nbsp;Landon Helm&nbsp; and&nbsp;Gustafson then both singled. By the time the inning was completed, Maize had scored 8 runs. 

Doty&nbsp;earned the win for Maize going two innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out one and walking one.&nbsp;Rylee Wray&nbsp;threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Carter Morgan&nbsp;took the loss for&nbsp;the Salthawks.&nbsp;Morgan&nbsp;surrendered nine runs on five hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out one. Clayton Crockett&nbsp;started the game for Maize and lasted two innings, allowing four hits and six runs. The Wind Surge extended their extra inning record to 3-1 after defeating the Arkansas Travelers 3-1 in ten innings and winning their third consecutive game Friday.

The Wind Surge scored two tenth inning runs without the benefit of a hit. The Surge took advantage of a fielder’s choice, a pair of walks and two sacrifice flies to plate two runs.

Matt Canterino started for Wichita and pitched three shutout innings and has not allowed a run or a hit in his last nine innings worked. The Surge went through five relief pitchers with Evan Sisk earning the win and Alex Scherff closing out the night with his second save.

Arkansas grabbed the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a Joe Rizzo RBI single.

In the seventh inning the Surge tied the game when Cole Sturgeon was hit by a pitch and scored on a ground out.

The Republican-controlled Senate voted 21-13 early Friday to approve the gambling bill. The Republican-controlled House passed the measure, 73-49, so it goes next to Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly. She is expected to sign it. 

The bill says that 80% of the state's revenues would go into a fund to provide incentives for professional sports teams to come to Kansas. Supporters were thinking specifically of the Chiefs.

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints used their first-round picks in the NFL draft to address offensive needs. The Saints traded to move up Thursday night and select Ohio State wide receiver Chris Olave before taking offensive tackle Trevor Penning of Northern Iowa. The Saints drafted Olave at No. 11 after trading their third- and fourth-round picks to the Washington Commanders and moving up five spots. New Orleans then landed Penning with the 19th overall pick. The Saints entered the draft with two picks on Friday, one in the second round and another in the third.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals star Nolan Arenado and pitcher Génesis Cabrera have been suspended for their actions during a benches-clearing fracas Wednesday against the New York Mets. Arenado has been banned two games and Cabrera one game, and both have been fined undisclosed amounts. Their punishments were announced Thursday by Michael Hill, Major League Baseball's senior vice president for on-field operations. Arenado is appealing his decision and was set to play third base and bat fourth for St. Louis against Arizona on Thursday night. LINDSBORG, Kan. (AP) — Police in the central Kansas town of Lindsborg announced two boys are suspected of being involved in the contamination of a water cooler used by the Kansas Wesleyan baseball team during a doubleheader at Bethany College last weekend. Both schools contacted police to file a report about a foreign substance found in Kansas Wesleyan's water. Police did not say how it connected the juveniles to the tainted water and said no one associated with either college was responsible for tampering with the water cooler. The substance mixed into the water was paint used to put lines on the field.

Suns, Mavs, 76ers advance to second round with Game 6 victories

UNDATED (AP) — Chris Paul went 14 for 14 in the best shooting night in NBA playoff history, Devin Booker returned from a hamstring injury to hit a late 3-pointer and the Phoenix Suns beat the New Orleans Pelicans 115-109 to finish off the first-round series in six games.

Paul had the most field goals without a miss in a playoff game, hit all four of his free throws and had eight assists as the top-seeded Suns overcame a 10-point halftime deficit.

Phoenix will face the Dallas Mavericks in the second round.

Luka Doncic (DAHN'-chihch) and Jalen Brunson each scored 24 points as the Mavericks advanced by beating the Utah Jazz 98-96 in Game 6 of their series.

After Brunson hit a 3-pointer from the corner, Mike Conley was called for traveling with five seconds remaining, and Brunson made one of two free throws with 4.3 seconds to play. The Jazz got an open look for Bojan (BOY'-ahn) Bogdanovic on the wing, but he came up short.

Defense 1st, then offense, with receivers a focal point

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Defense was the focus to start the NFL draft Thursday night, with the first five selections coming on that side of the ball, including edge rushers with Travon Walker of national champion Georgia to Jacksonville and Aidan Hutchinson of Michigan to Detroit at Nos. 1 and 2.

It's the first time in 31 years that no player on offense went in the opening five picks. So, naturally, the next five choices were on offense.

And those kept coming, with a focus on wide receivers. In all, six of the opening 18 selections were wideouts, starting with Southern California's Drake London at No. 8 to Atlanta.

No quarterbacks went until 20th, when Pitt's Kenny Pickett found out he can simply switch to another side of the practice facility as he joins the Steelers to perhaps become Ben Roethlisberger's successor.

— Another edge rusher went at No. 5. Kayvon Thibodeaux of Oregon will be bolstering the pass rush for the New York Giants.

— North Carolina State's Ikem Ekwonu, considered the premier blocker in this draft, has been selected sixth in the first round by quarterback-hungry Carolina. He is the first offensive player chosen.

— Evan Neal, a mammoth 6-foot-7, 335-pounder who has played both tackle positions at Alabama, is the second opening-round pick by the Giants.

— Seattle sought to address issues on its offensive line by taking Mississippi tackle Charles Cross at ninth overall.

— Picks 10, 11 and 12 were all pass catchers, starting with Garrett Wilson to the New York Jets at No. 10. Wilson's Ohio State teammate Chris Olave went next to the Saints after New Orleans swapped picks with Washington, which got New Orleans' pick at No. 16. And the Lions moved up to 12, swapping picks with Minnesota to take Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams.

Former Hutchinson Community College defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt became the 11th Blue Dragon to be selected in the NFL Draft on Thursday Night in Las Vegas.

Taken with the 28th overall pick in the first round by the Green Bay Packers, Wyatt becomes the highest drafted Blue Dragon player in program history and the second Blue Dragon ever selected in the first round.

Wyatt, a 6-foot-3, 315-pound defensive tackle from Decatur, Georgia, surpassed Cordarrelle Patterson as the highest-ranked Blue Dragon in NFL Draft history. Patterson was taken with the 29th overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Wyatt becomes the first Blue Dragon drafted since Gerald Everett (Rams), Alvin Kamara (Saints) and Jeremiah Ledbetter (Lions) were all selected in the 2017 Draft.

Combining drafted players and undrafted free-agent signees, Wyatt is the 35th Blue Dragon to be selected by an NFL team.

Wyatt joins Kevin Barry and Angelo Pease as Blue Dragons who were selected by the Packers. Both Barry (2002) and Pease (2013) were undrafted free-agent signees.

Wyatt played one season for the Blue Dragons in 2017, playing in 11 games. Wyatt finished with 30 total tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 quarterback sacks. He also had four quarterback hurries with one pass broken up and one blocked kick.

Wyatt had a season-high six tackles against Butler and had five tackles against Coffeyville.

Wyatt then transferred to the University of Georgia where he played 49 games over four seasons. Wyatt finished with 113 career tackles, including a career-high 39 in Georgia's 2021 national championship season.

In Georgia's national championship game victory over Alabama, Wyatt had four tackles and four quarterback hurries.

Wyatt was one of five Georgia defensive players taken in Thursday's first round.

CHICAGO (AP) — Kansas City Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi’s season is in jeopardy after tests Thursday revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee. The 26-year-old Mondesi, who played in only 35 games in 2021 because of left hamstring and left oblique injuries, had started 14 of 15 games this season. Mondesi, who was batting .140 with five stolen bases in five attempts, suffered the injury on an attempted pickoff play Tuesday night against the Chicago White Sox. Nicky Lopez, who started 141 games at shortstop in 2021, likely will move from second base to shortstop.
