LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Former SMU and Texas A&amp;M coach Jeanne Sutherland has been named to lead the Nebraska women's golf program. Sutherland was associate head coach in 2021-22 and takes over the top job from Lisa Johnson, who led the program three seasons. Johnson left after her husband, John Johnson, was hired as Portland State's athletic director. Sutherland was at SMU from 2011-21 and at Texas A&amp;M from 1992-2007. Sutherland led a combined 18 teams from those schools to NCAA regionals, with four advancing to the championship rounds. She was head pro at Vail Golf Club in Colorado from 2007-11.

Avs go up 2-0; Blueshirts, Cats, Stars win

UNDATED (AP) — The Nashville Predators' No. 3 goaltender almost stole a game from the Colorado Avalanche in his first postseason start. Instead, the top-seeded Avs were able to take a two-games-to-none lead in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Cale Makar (mah-KAHR') beat Connor Ingram on Colorado's 51st shot to give the Avalanche a 2-1 win over the Predators. Before the goal, the rookie netminder hadn't allowed a goal since Nathan MacKinnon beat him 5:25 into the game. Makar ended it at 8:31 of the extra session.

Yakov Trenin had the lone goal for Nashville, tying the game in the first period.

Meanwhile, it was time for the New York Rangers, Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars to get even. The Blueshirts, Cats and Stars knotted their respective Stanley Cup first-round series at a game apiece.

Artemi Panarin (ahr-TEH'-mee pah-NAH'-rihn) and Frank Vatrano each had a goal and two assists in the Rangers' 5-2 win over Pittsburgh, helping the Blueshirts bounce back from Tuesday's triple-overtime loss. The Rangers led 3-2 until Panarin and Vatrano scored 1:47 apart midway through the third period.

Chris Kreider, Ryan Strome (strohm) and Andrew Copp provided New York's other goals.

Igor Shesterkin (shehs-TUR'-kihn) turned back 39 shots and looked no worse for wear after making 79 saves in Game 1.

The Panthers got back on track by whipping the Capitals, 5-1.

Jake Oettinger (AH'-tihn-jur) made 29 saves in his first postseason shutout and second career playoff start, guiding the Stars past the Flames, 2-0 in Calgary. Oettinger stopped 23 shots over the last two periods, allowing the Stars to even the Stanley Cup first-round series at a game apiece.

Joe Pavelski opened the scoring 7:47 into the first period and Michael Raffl (RAH'-ful) secured the win with an empty-netter.

UNDATED (AP) — Shohei Ohtani was overpowering in his Fenway Park debut, but it took his Los Angeles Angels teammates seven innings to give him some support.

The reigning American League MVP fired two-hit ball with seven strikeouts over seven frames as the Angels drubbed the Red Sox, 8-0. Ohtani induced a career-best 29 swings and misses and threw 81 of his 99 pitches for strikes. He also drove in a run.

However, Rich Hill and Tanner Houck matched zeroes with Ohtani until Jared Walsh belted a two-run homer in the seventh. The Angels followed with a five-run eighth, capped by Walsh's two-run, infield single.

— Austin Hays and Ryan Mountcastle hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning to push the Orioles past the Twins, 5-3. Hays also saved a run by throwing out Max Kepler out at the plate in the fourth. Mountcastle had two round-trippers and Jorge López got the final four outs to move to 3-1.

— Rookie Steven Kwan hit his first big-league homer and Adam Civale (sih-VA'-lee) picked up his first win of the season as the Guardians rallied to beat the Blue Jays, 6-5. Toronto had a 2-0 lead until Kwan ripped a two-run shot, sparking a scoring burst that gave Cleveland a 6-2 lead. Civale struck out eight and allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings.

— Mike Zunino (zuh-NEE'-noh) smacked a three-run homer against his former team and Shane McClanahan held Seattle hitless into the fifth inning of the Rays' 4-3 victory. The only hits Seattle managed off the hard-throwing lefty were Jesse Winker's first homer of the season and consecutive singles by Ty France and J.P. Crawford in the sixth, ending McClanahan's night. — The Astros pulled out a 3-2 win over the Tigers on Kyle Tucker's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. UNDATED (AP) — Twins shortstop Carlos Correa may have a broken finger after he was hit by a pitch Thursday in Baltimore.

A Twins spokesman said after the game that preliminary imaging showed the potential for a non-displaced fracture of Correa's right middle finger. Correa is expected to have a CT scan Friday.

— The White Sox have placed outfielder Andrew Vaughn on the 10-day injured list because of a bruised right hand. Chargers add another veteran to defense, signing LB Van Noy

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Chargers added another veteran to their defense by signing outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy. The outside linebacker had 66 tackles for the Patriots last season and was second on the team with five sacks. Van Noy was released by the Patriots in March.

Report: Mickelson had $40 million in gambling losses

UNDATED (AP) — A new book on Phil Mickelson says government auditors found his gambling losses totaled more than $40 million in a four-year period.

Alan Shipnuck writes that the federal audit occurred during the investigation of Mickelson's role in an insider trading scheme that sent Billy Walters to prison. Shipnuck's previous excerpt shed light on Lefty's involvement with a Saudi-funded golf league run by Greg Norman.

Mickelson has not said if he will defend his title in the PGA Championship in two weeks.

Conference leaders meet with government leaders in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) — The commissioners of the Southeastern and Pac-12 conferences were in Washington on Thursday, meeting with lawmakers to discuss the need for federal legislation to help colleges regulate how athletes can be paid for endorsement deals.

Coaches and administrators from several college conferences held spring meetings in Arizona this week and emphasized the need to bring some uniform standards to NIL compensation.

Outgoing Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said college sports leaders have been told there is little if any chance of anything getting done in Congress for college sports until after the midterm elections in November.

The NCAA has generally not regulated NIL activity as booster-fueled collectives have sprung up all over the country. Coaches and administrators have complained that collectives are crossing NCAA lines by using payments disguised as NIL deals as recruiting inducements for both high school prospects and transferring athletes.

POTOMAC, Md. (AP) — Jason Day shot a 7-under 63 to take the first-round lead at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Day has been tinkering with his swing in an effort to end a four-year victory drought on the PGA Tour.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Cord cutters could be in for some sticker shock if they hope to stream a Kansas City Royals game in the coming months.

The Sinclair Broadcasting Group owns Bally Sports Kansas City and the streaming rights to dozens of MLB, NBA, and NHL franchises.

The company announced new details about it’s new streaming service called Bally Sports+ during its first-quarter earnings call Wednesday, according to TheStreamable.com.

The report said Sinclair plans to soft launch Bally Sports+ this quarter with the Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins, and Detroit Tigers.

It then plans to expand Bally Sports+ this fall with more than two dozen NBA and NHL franchises.

The good news is that Bally Sports+ is expected to allow Royals fans in Kansas City to stream games. Currently fans without a cable subscription or DirectTV Stream can’t watch the Royals. That includes many fans in the Kansas City metro who have cut the cord on cable.

Bally Sports+ will cost $189.99 annually or $19.99 a month, which shocked some fans.

That compares to DirecTV Stream, which includes other channels, but costs $89.99 a month.&nbsp;MLB.TV&nbsp;streaming service&nbsp;costs $24.99 a month,&nbsp;NBA League Pass&nbsp;Premium&nbsp;sets fans back $29.99 a month, and&nbsp;NHL.TV&nbsp;is offered as part of&nbsp;ESPN+&nbsp;and costs $6.99 a month.

Jordan Kyrou's rebound midway through the second period on a power play finally put the Blues on the board. Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, Nolan Arenado hit a three-run shot and finished with five RBIs, and the Cardinals beat the Royals 10-0 to take their four-game season series. The only hit Wainwright allowed came against Michael Taylor with one out in the third. Tyler O'Neill and Harrison Bader also drove in runs off the Royals' Kris Bubic, who retired just one batter before he was pulled from the game. Wainwright and catcher Yadier Molina tied the Braves' Warren Spahn and Del Crandall for the most team wins by starting battery mates with their 202nd together.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita State has fired athletic director Darron Boatright. University President Rick Muma said in a news release that Boatright had several achievements during his tenure but there were "significant, ongoing concerns" that had become acute in recent weeks. Sarah Adams, who is currently senior associate athletic director and senior women's administrator, will become interim athletic director. University supporters had recently criticized Boatright for the school's lack of preparation for name, image and likeness funds for Wichita State athletes. Boatright had been with Wichita State athletics for 12 years, the last six as AD.

UNDATED (AP) — The Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns hit the road after taking the first two games of their respective second-round series in the NBA playoffs.

Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler carried the Heat to a 119-103 win over the 76ers. Adebayo had a team-high 23 points for Miami, which went on a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to take an 18-point lead. Butler chipped in 22 points and 12 assists as the Heat took a 2-0 series lead for the 18th time in team history. They've never lost those series.

Victor Oladipo (oh-lah-DEE'-poh) scored 10 of his 19 points in the final period.

Tyrese Maxey had a game-high 34 points for the Sixers, who host Game 3 on Friday.

In Phoenix, Chris Paul scored 14 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter to allow the Suns to pull away in a 129-109 win over the Mavericks.

The Mavs led 60-58 at halftime but the Suns quickly recaptured the lead after Devin Booker hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the third.

Booker led the Suns with 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. The Suns shot 64.5% overall and made 13 of their 25 3-point attempts.

Luka Doncic (DAHN'-chihch) led all scorers with 35 points and Reggie Bullock had 16, but no other Mavericks had more than 11 points.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Brooklyn Nets say Ben Simmons will have surgery on Thursday to alleviate pain in his back caused by a herniated disk.

The No. 1 pick in the 2016 draft didn't play in Philadelphia after requesting a trade, citing mental health concerns. After he was dealt to Brooklyn in February in a deal for James Harden, he was bothered by the back while trying to rebuild his conditioning.

The Nets originally said he had back spasms but later said the problem was a herniated disk.

Lightning, Wild, Oilers tie series, Hurricanes maintain control

UNDATED (AP) — The Tampa Bay Lightning, Minnesota Wild and Edmonton Oilers got even on Wednesday, while the Carolina Hurricanes maintained control of their first-round series in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov led the Lightning to a 5-3 win over the Maple Leafs, tying the series at a game apiece.

Hedman put the Bolts ahead to stay with three seconds left in the first period. He also set up three scores.

Kucherov had a goal and two assists for Tampa Bay, which was coming off a 5-0 loss in the series opener. Hedman, Kucherov and Brayden Point each had power-play goals.

Andrei Vasilevskiy made 31 saves in the win.

Mitch Marner had a goal and an assist for the Leafs, who head to Tampa for Game 3 on Friday.

Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek accounted for five goals as the Wild blasted the Blues, 6-2. Kaprizov registered a hat trick and Eriksson Ek scored twice to help Minnesota erase the stench of Monday's shutout loss to St. Louis. Eriksson Ek thought he had a hat trick himself, but a Blues challenge for offside erased that goal.

Eriksson Ek, Frederick Gaudreau and Kaprizov scored in a 9:33 span of the first period to make it 3-0.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 32 shots for the Wild.

Jordan Kyrou (KY'-roo) and Vladimir Tarasenko had the St. Louis goals.

Mike Smith bounced back with a perfect 30-save performance in the Oilers' 6-0 crowning of the Kings. Smith picked up his fifth career playoff shutout, two nights after his puck-handling miscue led to Edmonton's 4-3 loss to Los Angeles.

Evander Kane had two goals and an assist and Ryan McLeod had one of each. Jesse Puljujarvi (pool-YAHR'-vee), Darnell Nurse and Leon Draisaitl (DRY'-sy-tul) also scored and Connor McDavid added two assists.

Jonathan Quick stopped 30 of 36 shots for the Kings, who host Game 3 on Friday.

The Hurricanes have a two-games-to-none lead following a very chippy 5-2 win over the Bruins.

Sebastian Aho (AH'-hoh) and Nino Niederreiter (NEE'-dur-eye-tur) each scored twice. Tony DeAngelo had three assists for the Metropolitan Division champs, who finished the game without Antti Raanta (AN'-tee RAHN'-tah). The Canes netminder had to leave in the first period after receiving a shot to the head by David Pastrnak (PAHS'-tur-nahk).

Pyotr Kochetkov (PEE'-tur koh-CHEHT'-kahv) made 29 saves in relief of Raanta, allowing a pair of goals by Patrice Bergeron (pah-TREES' BEHR'-zhuh-rahn).

— Cedric Mullins and Ramón Urías each hit a two-run homer while the Orioles scored six times in the third inning of their 9-4 win over the Twins. The Baltimore infield pulled off five double plays in the first seven innings. Former Oriole Dylan Bundy was reached for nine runs and 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings.

— Lucas Giolito struck out 10 while pitching into the sixth inning of the White Sox's 4-3 win over the Cubs. Giolito gave up just three hits over 5 2/3 frames, including homers by Nico Hoerner and Patrick Wisdom. Jose Abreu homered and outfielder Luis Robert made a game-saving grab to help the White Sox sweep the two-game set.

— Manuel Margot (mahn-WEHL' mahr-GOH') broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single in the eighth inning to spark the Rays' 3-0 shutout of the Athletics. Kenseth was a first-ballot selection, Shelmerdine was voted in on his third try and McGriff his seventh.

Mike Helton was named the Landmark Award winner for outstanding contributions to the sport Wednesday during a ceremony at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. They will officially be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Jan. 20.

Region VI Softball Parings

WICHITA, Kan.—Wichita State University has parted ways with current Athletic Director Darron Boatright.&nbsp; Boatright became AD for WSU in 2015.

WSU President Rick Muma has selected Sarah Adams to serve as the interim AD.&nbsp; Adams was hired in June of 2021 as an associate AD and senior women's administrator.&nbsp; Adams served as deputy athletic director at Eastern Washington before joining the Shockers.

Muma later confirmed the news, saying in a press release that “while there were certainly achievements and successes during Darron’s tenure, there were significant, ongoing concerns that became acute in recent weeks, ones that I did not believe could be addressed.”

Boatright hired both of WSU’s highest-profile coaches: men’s basketball coach Isaac Brown, whom he elevated to a permanent position with a five-year contract following an AAC championship run in 2021, and baseball coach Eric Wedge, who was hired in 2019. Both coaches have struggled in their most recent season. The WSU men’s basketball team had a disappointing 15-13 campaign and then seven scholarship players entered the NCAA transfer portal, while the baseball team is in the midst of a 15-30 season in Wedge’s second full season.&nbsp;

MILWAUKEE –&nbsp;Angelo Stuart has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Milwaukee men's basketball team, head coach&nbsp;Bart Lundy&nbsp;announced today. Stuart, a 6-foot, 1-inch, 185-pound shooting guard, comes to Milwaukee following an All-American campaign at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas. "Not only is Angelo an All-American guard, but he is one of the best students and most energetic individuals that I have recruited in 30 years of coaching," Lundy said. "I am so excited to have the opportunity to have him in the program and he is going to be a fan favorite from day one. Not only will he be a great player for us, but he will be one of the best ambassadors for our program we will ever have." Stuart was named a National Junior College Athletic Association Third Team All-American after leading the Blue Dragons to a 26-9 record, a second-place finish in the Jayhawk Conference, a Region VI Tournament runner-up finish, while also advancing to the second round of the 2022 NJCAA Tournament. Stuart led the Jayhawk Conference in scoring in 2021-22 and finished 12th in the NJCAA in scoring at 22.2 points per game. His 689 total points scored were the most for the program since 2018 (and 13th-most in school history). He established a new Blue Dragon single-season record for three-pointers made with 104 this season, connecting on 40.5 percent (104-of-257) of his attempts from deep. He put together three different outings in which he hit at least six 3's, scoring in double-figures 31 times while topping 30 on three different occasions. Stuart scored a season-high 34 points twice, both times coming against Dodge City. He also had a 30-point game against Connors State in the NJCAA Tournament. In addition to his All-America honors, Stuart was named First-Team All-Jayhawk Conference/Region VI. Besides the scoring average of 22.2 ppg, he also recorded per-game averages of 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 32 games, shooting nearly 80 percent (.780) from the free-throw line. Stuart spent the 2020-21 campaign at Seattle, playing in 17 games. That followed a very successful true freshman season at Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Missouri. While there, he led the Cardinals to a 30-2 record, the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference Championship, and the No. 1 seed in the Region 16 Tournament. In 32 games played, he led MAC in scoring at 17.8 ppg while shooting nearly 55 percent from the field, 40 percent from three and 80.4 percent from the charity stripe, adding 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He was named First Team All-MCCAC, First Team All-Region 16, Region 16 Player of the Year and NJCAA Division I Second Team All-American, all while he&nbsp;maintained a 4.0 GPA during 2019-20, earning NJCAA&nbsp;First Team&nbsp;All-Academic honors.&nbsp;&nbsp;
