Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji and K-State’s Nijel Pack shared Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while Texas Tech’s Kevin Obanor was voted Newcomer of the Week. Agbaji collected his fourth career honor and third of the season, including consecutive weeks. Pack and Obanor were recognized for the first time.

In Kansas' two come-from-behind road wins, Agbaji averaged 19.5 points and 6.0 rebounds. In the win at Oklahoma, he left the game in the first half with a wrist injury when he collided with the scorer’s table. His 10 points for the game came in the final 5:25. Kansas trailed 52-50 when Agbaji scored eight straight for KU with his eighth tying the game at 58. He then made a basket to put KU up 62-60 and later made the assist that led to what would be the game-winning three-pointer by Christian Braun. At Kansas State, the senior guard tied his career-high with 29 points. He scored seven of Kansas' final nine points, including the go-ahead field goal with nine seconds remaining. Agbaji later iced the victory making two free throws with 1.1 seconds left.

Pack averaged 25.5 points on 57.6 percent shooting, including 58.8 percent from 3-point range, in splitting games at No. 23/22 Texas and at home against No. 7/7 Kansas. After helping the Wildcats hand the Longhorns their first home loss with 16 points, he followed that with a near-historic effort against the Jayhawks, scoring a career-high 35 points on 12-of-18 field goals, including 8-of-12 from 3-point range. The guard’s 35 points tied for the seventh-most by a Wildcat in a Big 12 game, while it tied for the fourth-most by a sophomore in school history. He is just the sixth Wildcat to score 35 or more points ever against Kansas. Pack’s eight made 3-point field goals tied his career-high and were tied for the most made in a conference game by a K-State player. Only one Wildcat has ever made more than eight 3-pointers in a game (Askia Jones' school-record 14 in 1994).

Agbaji, Pack share weekly Big XII honor

(KJCCC) January 24, 2022 – The Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) has suspended the conference wrestling duals schedule for 2022.

“With the current state of the pandemic, the KJCCC feels that safety of our student athletes at wrestling colleges needs to be a top priority,” said KJCCC commissioner Carl Heinrich.&nbsp;

Athletic directors and wrestling coaches at the eight KJCCC wrestling colleges met with conference officials via Zoom call last week to discuss the safety issue. Heinrich commented following the meeting.

“To afford our student athletes with the best and safest opportunity to wrestle in the postseason, we have decided to pause the current dual and conference schedule,” said Heinrich.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We will resume competition in Colby (KS) at the NJCAA District Championships.”

The NJCAA District Championships are scheduled for the Colby Event Center on February 12.

The 2022 NJCAA Wrestling Championships are set for the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs IA on March 4-5.

At 5-1, Kansas sits atop the Big 12 standings after its 78-75 come-from-behind win at Kansas State, Jan. 22, in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown. KU trailed by 17 early in the second half in the victory. Texas Tech is tied with Baylor for second in the Big 12 standings at 5-2. The Red Raiders have won two straight after defeating West Virginia, 78-65, on Jan. 22.

Since the inception of the Big 12 in 1996-97, Kansas is 74-20 all-time on ESPN Big Monday (44-1 at home and 30-19 on the road), including 55-14 under head coach Bill Self (33-0 at home and 22-14 on the road).

Kansas leads the overall series with Texas Tech, 39-7, including 20-1 in Allen Fieldhouse. Earlier this season, Texas Tech handed Kansas its lone league loss, 75-67, on Jan. 8, in Lubbock.

TOPEKA – The Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field team earned three national qualifications on Saturday at the season-opening All-Kansas Invitational at Washburn University.

The Blue Dragons had one event win, 14 Top 10 finishes and scored 51 points in the 19-team field filled with Jayhawk Conference schools, NAIA programs as well as teams from Wichita State, Washburn and Fort Hays State.

Sophomore sprinter Clyedterrious Thompson won the 60 Meters on Saturday with a national-qualifying time of 6.84 seconds. Thompson ran the ninth-fastest 60-meter time in Blue Dragon history. He qualifying second for the finals, running 6.84 seconds in the preliminaries.

Thompson finished seventh in the 200 meters in 22.17 seconds. He finished eighth in the long jump at 21 feet, 2.75 inches.

Sophomore Antonio Cooper qualified for nationals for the first time as a collegian, placing third in the shot put. He had a top mark of 51-9.75, which is the seventh-best indoor mark in Blue Dragon history.

Freshman distance runner Collin Oswalt was the third Blue Dragon to qualify for the NJCAA Indoor national championships in March. Oswalt qualified in the 3,000 meters in a 13th-place time of 8:46.26. That time is the fourth-fastest time in Blue Dragon history.

Freshman Sharim Hamilton placed second in the 400 Meters, running a time of 49.85 seconds, which is the third-fastest in Blue Dragon indoor history.

Freshman Caleb Manning was fifth in the high school after clearing 6-2.75. Manning also placed fourth in the triple jump at 46-5.5 and was fifth in the long jump at 21-9.

Sophomore Davion Gardenhire had two personal-best performances in Saturday. Gardenhire ran PRs of 7.11 seconds in the 60 meters and 22.40 seconds in the 200 meters.

Dre’Shun Bridges had a PR of 7.12 seconds in the 60 meters. Andrew Holt had a PR in the Mile run in 4:40.81.

The Blue Dragons will next compete at the Jayhawk Invitational on Saturday in Pittsburg.

(AP) — Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu was placed in the concussion protocol and ruled out of Sunday night's divisional playoff game against Buffalo after taking a knee from teammate Jarran Reed on the opening drive. Gonzaga suspends Stockton's season tickets over mask rule

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Gonzaga has suspended John Stockton's basketball season tickets after the Hall of Fame point guard refused to comply with the university's mask mandate. Stockton confirmed the move in a Saturday interview with The Spokesman-Review. 

The prominent Gonzaga alum has claimed without evidence that more than 100 professional athletes have died after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. 

Experts have told the AP there is "no scientific evidence" that either COVID-19 or the mRNA vaccines have increased sudden cardiac arrest, often referred to as SCA, among athletes. 

LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Hudson Swafford has rallied to win The American Express for the second time in five years, defeating Tom Hoge by two strokes.

Swafford eagled the par-5 16th to take the lead, then added a 20-foot birdie on 17 before sinking a par putt for an 8-under 64 that left him 23 under in his third career PGA win. He began the day three strokes behind rookies Lee Hodges and Paul Barjon.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Ochai Agbaji hit a baseline jumper with 9 seconds left to lift No. 7 Kansas over Kansas State 78-75. Agbaji's shot gave Kansas its first lead since early in the first half and snapped K-State's two-game winning streak against ranked foes. Agbaji scored 29 points. Jalen Wilson added 16 points for Kansas, and Christian Braun and David McCormack with 11 each. Kansas State wasted a career-high 35 points by Nijel Pack. Markquis Nowell had 16 and Selton Miguel added 11. Kansas made just 15 of 22 free throws in the second half but was saved by a 45-23 rebounding advantage.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Damion Baugh scored 23 points to help TCU upset No. 15 Iowa State 59-44. Baugh hit 11 of 17 shots, while TCU (13-3, 3-2 Big 12) held the Cyclones to their lowest point total in the 50-year history of Hilton Coliseum. The previous low was 45 points against Tennessee in 2018. Iowa State (14-5, 2-5) struggled to get much going offensively, hitting just 31% of its shots and committing 11 turnovers. Izaiah Brockington led the Cyclones with 19 points and 12 rebounds, marking his seven double-double of the season.

CHICAGO (AP) — Isiaih Mosley scored 40 points and Missouri State beat No. 22 Loyola Chicago 79-69, ending the Ramblers' 10-game winning streak. Donovan Clay added 16 points and Gaige Prim 11 for the Bears, who last beat an AP Top 25 team Dec. 28, 2011, when they defeated No. 21 Creighton 77-65. Braden Morris had 16 points and Lucas Williamson 11 for Loyola Chicago, which had won 30 straight home games for the fourth-longest active streak in Division I. Missouri State led by as much as 20 and shot 60.9% from the field after halftime — and 53.8% for the game. The Bears also went 8 of 19 from beyond the arc.&nbsp;

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Keegan Murray had 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks and Iowa beat Penn State 68-51. Kris Murray, Keegan's twin, scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half for Iowa. The Nittany Lions twice cut their deficit to three in the second half but Iowa answered with a 3-pointer each time and they got no closer. Bohannan made 3 to make it 35-29 about two minutes in and 11 seconds after Myles Dread hit from behind the arc to pull Penn State to 44-41 Kris Murray answered from deep with 10:59 to play. Jalen Pickett led Penn State with 14 points.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Roman Penn scored 18 points and Garrett Sturtz and Tucker Devries each posted double-doubles and Drake beat Northern Iowa 82-74 in overtime. Penn made two foul shots to break a tie at 72 with 2:39 left in overtime and the Bulldogs led the rest of the way. Sturtz had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Devries scored 11 with 11 rebounds. AJ Green scored 27 points for the Panthers.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Ryan Kalkbrenner posted 18 points and 10 rebounds to carry Creighton to a 60-47 win over DePaul. Jalen Terry led the Blue Demons on Saturday with 10 points and six rebounds.

DENVER (AP) — Tevin Smith had 18 points to lead five Denver players in double figures as the Pioneers romped past Nebraska Omaha 94-63. Denver's 94 points were a season high. Michael Henn scored 13 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and distributed six assists for the Pioneers. Felix Lemetti had 12 points for Omaha.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs could have running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire available for the first time in nearly a month when they play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night for a spot in their fourth consecutive AFC championship game. Edwards-Helaire practiced all week for the first time since hurting his collarbone in the second half against Pittsburgh on Dec. 26. Chiefs coach Andy Reid also said that linebacker Willie Gay Jr. would play against Buffalo. He was arrested and charged with misdemeanor criminal damage to property this week. Gay pleaded not guilty on Thursday and practiced on Friday.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans played 17 games to claim home-field advantage in the NFL playoffs. Both teams were actually kicked out of the postseason after 60 minutes.

Robbie Gould drilled a 45-yard field goal as time expired to give the San Francisco 49ers a 13-10 upset of Green Bay. Gould continued his playoff perfection and moved the Niners one step away from their second Super Bowl appearance in three seasons. He's 20-for-20 in playoff field goal attempts.

The Packers led 10-3 until Jordan Willis blocked a punt and Talanoa Hufanga ran six yards for the tying touchdown with 4:31 remaining. The Packers then went three-and-out, giving the 49ers time for a winning drive.

A.J. Dillon's 6-yard touchdown run capped a 69-yard drive on the game's opening possession that put the Packers ahead 7-0. Green Bay's offense didn't do much of anything after that.

In Nashville, rookie Evan McPherson kicked a 52-yard field goal as time expired to lift the fourth-seeded Bengals past the Titans, 19-16. The kick sent the Bengals to the AFC title game for the first time in 33 years and came after Cincinnati squandered a 16-6 lead in the second half.

Luke Wilson picked off Ryan Tannehill with 20 seconds left at the Cincinnati 47. Joe Burrow hit Pro Bowl rookie receiver Ja'Marr Chase with a 19-yard pass and the Bengals ran twice to set up McPherson for the win. 

Burrow shook off being sacked nine times as Tennessee tied an NFL mark for the most in the postseason. The Bengals' second-year quarterback threw for 348 yards, and Chase finished with 109 yards receiving. 

Tannehill was picked off three times and the Titans remained winless in home playoff games since 2003. 

Tennessee had Derrick Henry on the field after he missed nine games with a broken foot. The 2020 Offensive Player of the Year ran for a touchdown and finished with 66 yards. 

Today's other NFL playoff game is in the fourth quarter with the Packers leading the 49ers, 10-3. Neither team had reached the end zone after AJ Dillon's TD run in the first quarter. Mason Crosby added a 33-yard field goal in the final period.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay running back Leonard Fournette has been activated from injured reserve and will play in Sunday's NFC divisional playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Fournette appeared in 14 games before a hamstring injury landed him on IR on Dec. 23. His missed the final three weeks of the regular season and last week's 31-15 wild-card playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

UNDATED (AP) — Second-ranked Auburn trailed by double-digits at home on Saturday before extending its winning streak.

The Tigers trailed by 10 in the first half before posting their 15th consecutive win, 80-71 against No. 12 Kentucky. Walker Kessler scored 19 points and K.D. Johnson had 17 for the Tigers, who are 18-1 overall and 7-0 in the SEC. Kessler shot 8-for-10 and had seven rebounds.

The Wildcats scored 13 consecutive points to build a double-digit lead six minutes into the game. 

Oscar Tshiebwe had 16 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots for Kentucky.

— Adam Flagler provided 16 points and fifth-ranked Baylor picked up its 14th straight road win by defeating Oklahoma, 65-51. LJ Cryer had 15 points and the Bears took advantage of 25 turnovers to improve to 17-2 overall and 5-2 in the Big 12.

— AJ Griffin hit a team season-high five 3-pointers for sixth-ranked Duke in a 79-59 rout of Syracuse. Griffin was among four Blue Devils to score 15 points. Paolo Banchero had 15 points and 13 rebounds in his fourth double-double of the season. 

— Ochai Agbaji capped his 29-point afternoon by nailing a baseline jumper with nine seconds remaining to send seventh-ranked Kansas past Kansas State, 78-75. Jalen Wilson added 16 points for the Jayhawks, who trailed most of the game until Agbaji's go-ahead bucket.

— Kyler Edwards had 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for 10th-ranked Houston in a 79-36 thrashing of East Carolina. Edwards scored 17 first half points as the 17-2 Cougars built a 44-14 lead.

— Collin Gillespie, Justin Moore and Jermaine Samuels combined for 65 points as 11th-ranked Villanova knocked off Georgetown, 85-74. Bulls' Caruso sidelined by broken wrist after Allen foul

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso will have surgery next week to repair his broken right wrist.

Caruso was injured while being taken down by Grayson Allen during the third quarter of Friday night's 94-90 loss at Milwaukee. Allen was called for a Flagrant Foul 2 and was tossed from the game.

The team says Caruso will be re-evaluated in six to eight weeks. Caruso is averaging 8.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists over 28 games in his first season with Chicago.

— Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. is out of health and safety protocols and available to be on the sideline Sunday against the Celtics. Unseld said Saturday he felt good. He said he had mild symptoms after his positive test.
