LAWRENCE — Former KU point guard Sherron Collins will be the new head boys basketball coach at Free State High School in Lawrence, pending board approval.

Collins, a Chicago native, was a guard on the Jayhawks' 2008 National Championship-winning team.

He played two years in the NBA with the Charlotte Bobcats.

Free State beat Hutchinson in a substate final this march before losing in the 6A semis. Collins replaces Sam Stroh, who is getting out of coaching.

Little Rock, AR- The Arkansas Travelers scored four third inning runs and never trailed, handing the Wichita Wind Surge a 6-1 loss to open the six game series.

Leading the nation in saves this past season, Hutchinson Community College freshman pitcher Riley Wertz was named a third-team NJCAA Division I All-American on Tuesday.

Wertz played a major role in Hutchinson posting a 41-8 overall record and finishing 15th in the final NJCAA Rankings. The 41 victories were the second-most in program history. The Blue Dragons went 29-3 and finished second in the KJCCC this season and were third in the Region VI Tournament.

Wertz is the 10th Blue Dragon to earn NJCAA All-America honors, the fourth under head coach Jaime Rose.

Wertz, a freshman from Maize, posted a 13-1 record with a 1.35 earned-run average this season with a Blue Dragon single-season and career record and NJCAA-high nine saves. Wertz won her first 10 decisions of the season and her ERA is the first sub-2.00 mark since Holley Kelley in 2016.

The 1.35 ERA is the third-lowest in program history.

For just the second time in program history, Blue Dragon softball has All-America players in back-to-back seasons. Last season, Madison Grimes was a second-team All-American. The last time the Dragons had back-to-back NJCAA All-Americans was 1986 and 1987.

Wertz was already named the Jayhawk Conference 2022 Freshman of the Year. She was also a first-team all-Jayhawk and All-Region VI selection.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Jessica Keller has been hired as an assistant coach at Nebraska after five seasons at Illinois State. Coach Amy Williams announced the addition of Keller three weeks after Nebraska confirmed it had parted ways with associate head coach Chuck Love. Love was suspended with pay in February and sophomore guard Ashley Scoggin was removed from the team the same week. The Nebraska athletic department has not said if the Love and Scoggin situations were connected. Scoggin has since transferred to UNLV

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Denny Hamlin has warned Ross Chastain that there's still some retribution due after the eighth-generation watermelon farmer wrecked him in Sunday's race at World Wide Technology Raceway. Hamlin tried to exact some revenge later in the race but was still steaming afterward. It didn't help Chastain's cause that he also got into the back of Joey Logano briefly, then sent Chase Elliott for a spin. Chastain has two wins this season and is immensely talented, but the race Sunday was another example of his ongoing work in harnessing his aggressive driving style.

Avalanche sweep Oilers, advance to Stanley Cup Final

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Artturi Lehkonen scored 1:19 into overtime, and Colorado rallied to beat the Edmonton Oilers 6-5 Monday night, completing a four-game sweep in the Western Conference final and sending the Avalanche to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2001.

Colorado will take on the winner of the Eastern Conference final between the New York Rangers and two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bruins fire coach Bruce Cassidy after 1st-round playoff exit

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Bruins have fired coach Bruce Cassidy several weeks after losing in the first round of the playoffs.

General manager Don Sweeney says the search for a replacement will begin immediately. Boston made the playoffs in each of Cassidy's six seasons behind the bench. He coached the Bruins within one victory of the Stanley Cup in 2019. Cassidy immediately becomes a top candidate for vacancies in Philadelphia, Chicago, Winnipeg, Vegas and Detroit and any others that may now come open.

UNDATED (AP) — Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout singled in his first at-bat against the Boston Red Sox on Monday night, ending a career-worst 0-for-26 drought.

Trout snapped his skid in Los Angeles' first home game following a six-game trip to the East Coast. His previous worst slide was 0 for 21 in May of 2018. The three-time MVP previously had a hit May 28 at home against the Toronto Blue Jays, when he went 3 for 4 with a home run. During road series last week against the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies, he was 0 for 21 in 24 trips to the plate, dropping his average to .274.

His struggles contributed to the Angels' 11-game losing streak entering Monday. The club record in a season is a 12-game losing streak in 1988.

UNDATED (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a minor league contract with former Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel (KY'-kuhl), according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The person spoke to The Associated Press Thursday on the condition of anonymity because the move has not been announced. The left-hander was recently released by the Chicago White Sox after having a 2-5 record with a 7.88 ERA through eight starts. He was in the final season of a $55 million, three-year deal. The 34-year-old Keuchel won the AL Cy Young Award with the Houston Astros in 2015 and is also a two-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner.

— Outfielder Yordan Álvarez and the Houston Astros finalized a $115 million, six-year contract covering 2023-28. Álvarez hit .277 last year and set career highs with 33 homers and 104 RBIs. He s hitting .295 with 16 homers and 34 RBIs this year, all team highs.

7 of 8 super regionals are set in NCAA baseball tournament

UNDATED (AP) — Seven of the eight matchups for the NCAA baseball super regionals are set after No. 3 national seed Oregon State, No. 8 East Carolina and seven other teams won regionals.

The best-of-three super regionals begin Friday and Saturday and will determine the field for the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, beginning June 17.

UNDATED (AP) — A 24th woman has filed a civil lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct by Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is also awaiting possible discipline from the NFL.

The latest lawsuit was filed in Houston by attorney Tony Buzbee, who is representing all 24 women. Buzbee says in a statement that the women "continue to stand firm for what is right." Watson's lead attorney Rusty Hardin did not immediately reply to a request seeking comment. Hardin has repeatedly said Watson has done nothing wrong.

Watson has been accused by massage therapists of harassing, assaulting or touching them during appointments and the latest lawsuit makes similar allegations. Watson could be suspended if the league determines he violated its personal conduct policy.

All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald is getting a big raise to stay with the Los Angeles Rams under a reworked contract through 2024. The Super Bowl champion Rams didn't disclose terms of the new deal, but the NFL Network reported Donald is getting a $40 million raise that will make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league. Donald was already under contract for $55 million over the next three seasons.

—The Denver Broncos could have a new owner as soon as this month in what's expected to be the most expensive deal in sports history at around $4.5 billion. A second round of bids for the franchise was due Monday from prospective buyers. The Pat Bowlen Trust will have to accept the winning bid, and NFL owners will need to approve the sale, likely in July, of the team that's been in the Bowlen family for nearly four decades.

Quinn makes US Open at 57 in qualifying for young and old

POWELL, Ohio (AP) — Fran Quinn is the oldest player to make it through 36-hole qualifying for this year's U.S. Open. Quinn is 57 and played the qualifier in Purchase, New York, with 23-year-old son Owen. Only the father made it through.

It was one of nine sites in the U.S. and Canada. Up for grabs were 49 spots to get into The Country Club in two weeks outside Boston. Among those who made it were PGA Tour rookie Davis Riley and college stars Chris Gotterup of Oklahoma and Sam Bennett of Texas A&amp;M. Weather prevented some qualifiers from finishing until Tuesday.

Tim Tebow among first-timers on College Football HOF ballot

UNDATED (AP) — Tim Tebow is among the former players making a first appearance on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot this year.

Tebow led Florida to two national championships and won a Heisman Trophy and has been outspoken in his Christian beliefs. Some of the other former players on the ballot for the first time are quarterback Alex Smith of Utah, wide receiver Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State, running back Ki-Jana Carter of Penn State, linebacker Luke Kuechly of Boston College and defensive lineman Dewey Selmon of Oklahoma.

Sabathia, Ethier in All-Star softball at Dodger Stadium

NEW YORK (AP) — Retired pitcher CC Sabathia and outfielder Andre Ethier will play in the All-Star celebrity softball game at Dodger Stadium on July 16 along with Olympic softball gold medalists Lisa Fernandez, Jennie Finch and Natasha Watley.

Actors Rob Lowe, Zachary Levi, Anthony Ramos, Simu Liu and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also were announced for the game along with singers Lele Pons and JoJo Siwa, rapper Quavo, snowboarder Chloe Kim and wrestler Michael Gregory Mizanin, known as "The Miz". The softball game follows the Futures Game of top prospects and precedes a concert by Rebbeca Marie Gomez, known as Becky G.

Glasgow to host Billie Jean King Cup Finals in November

LONDON (AP) — The International Tennis Federation has selected Glasgow, Scotland to host the Billie Jean King Cup Finals on indoor hard courts in November.

It will be the fourth time the largest annual women's international team competition has been staged in Britain.

The Queen's Club in London hosted the inaugural event in 1963 when the competition was launched as the Federation Cup and Billie Jean King was part of the winning U.S. team. The competition was also staged at Eastbourne in 1977 and Nottingham in 1991.

KANSAS CITY, Kan, (AP) — Jesús Ferreira failed to convert a pair of first-half chances as U.S. forwards kept up their goal-scoring struggles and the Americans played a 0-0 draw against Uruguay in their second of four World Cup warmup matches this month. The U.S. took the field three hours after learning Wales would be its opening World Cup opponent in November and the Americans stretched their home unbeaten streak to 25 matches since a September 2019 loss to Mexico. That's one shy of the team record set from 2013-15. American forwards have one goal in the team's last 13 matches.

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Joey Logano jockeyed for the lead with Kyle Busch in overtime, got around him for good just before the white flag flew and cruised to the victory Sunday in the NASCAR Cup Series debut at World Wide Technology Raceway. Logano made it a banner day for Team Penske, which won the IndyCar race with Will Power earlier in the day in Detroit. Kurt Busch finished second with Logano's teammate, Ryan Blaney, finishing fourth and Aric Almirola in fifth.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Jerry Kelly birdied the first hole of a playoff with Kirk Triplett to win the PGA Tour Champions' Principal Charity Classic. Kelly hit his approach to 4 feet on the par-4 18th to set up the winning putt. The 55-year-old from Wisconsin has nine victories on the 50-and-over tour after winning three times on the PGA Tour. Kelly and Triplett each shot 5-under 67 to finish at 18 under at Wakonda Club, two strokes ahead of Steven Alker and Bernhard Langer. Kelly returned from a lightning delay to play the final three holes of regulation, making a birdie on the par-3 17th. Triplett birdied the par-4 16th and parred the last two. The 60-year-old Triplett won the last of his eight senior titles in 2019.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Roc Riggio had seven RBIs, Griffin Doersching hit the go-ahead grand slam to cap Oklahoma State's seven-run sixth inning and the Cowboys rallied to beat Missouri State 29-15 to avoid elimination at the Stillwater Regional. Oklahoma State (41-21), which beat the Bears 10-5 in the opening round of the regional, plays Arkansas in the championship round. Missouri State scored nine runs in the second inning and three more in the bottom of the third to take a 12-0 lead but the Cowboys scored at least four runs in five of the final six innings - including seven apiece in the sixth and ninth. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Veryl Switzer, the trailblazing former Green Bay Packers halfback who traded a career in the NFL for service as a lieutenant in the Air Force, died Saturday. He was 89. Before his professional career, Switzer starred on the gridiron and in track and field at Kansas State before returning as an administrator. Citing his family, the school announced his death in a statement Sunday. Additional details weren't provided. Switzer was an All-American for the Wildcats for three straight seasons, leading the team in rushing in 1952 and 1953, and was selected fourth overall by the Packers in the 1954 draft. He played in 24 games in the NFL before his military service, then resumed his football career in Canada.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Holly Azevedo threw a two-hit shutout and No. 5 UCLA beat No. 14 Florida 8-0 in six innings to reach the Women's College World Series semifinals and eliminate the Gators. She threw just 88 pitches to claim the win. Kelli Godin, Maya Brady and Briana Perez each had two hits for the Bruins. UCLA will play No. 1 seed Oklahoma in the semifinals and will have to beat the defending champion Sooners twice to reach the best-of-three championship series. The teams met in the championship series in 2019, with UCLA winning both games to claim the title.

Warriors rip Celtics to knot NBA Finals at a game apiece

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Golden State Warriors had another outstanding third quarter on Sunday against the Boston Celtics. This time, the Warriors didn't waste it.

Golden State broke it open by outscoring the Celtics 35-14 in the third period en route to a 107-88 win against Boston, tying the NBA Finals at a game apiece. The Warriors carried a two-point edge into intermission before taking over, ending the third period on a 19-2 run. They held Boston under 38% shooting for the game.

Steph Curry was the center of the Warriors' offense once again, hitting five 3-pointers and providing 29 points with four assists. Jordan Poole was 5-for-9 from 3-point range in scoring 17 points.

Celtics forward Al Horford took just four shots and scored two points, three nights after providing a team-high 26 points in Game 1. Jayson Tatum had 28 points and Jaylen Brown added 17 on 5 of 17 from the field.

PARIS (AP) — Rafael Nadal has captured his 22nd Grand Slam title and 14th French Open championship by whipping Casper Ruud, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. At 36, Nadal is the oldest title winner in the history of the event.

Ruud had a 3-1 lead in the second set and didn't win another game, with Nadal taking the last 11 and finishing with 37 winners with just 16 unforced errors.

But Nadal said his painful left foot was numbed by multiple injections to two nerves during the tournament. He admitted after the final that at any other tournament, he wouldn't have continued playing under extreme physical conditions.

The foot has been bothering him for two years, yet he's now threatening to complete a calendar Grand Slam.

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Billy Horschel made an eagle putt on the 15th hole that all but secured his win in the Memorial at Muirfield Village.

Horschel shot a 72 and won by four shots over Aaron Wise. Horschel's eagle putt from just inside 55 feet had the perfect line and perfect speed, bending left and dropping in the left side of the cup as he stretched out both arms in a quiet, disbelieving celebration.

Horschel finished at 13-under 275 and won $2.16 million, the largest paycheck of his career.

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (AP) — Minjee Lee won the U.S. Women's Open by four strokes over Mina Harigae (HAR'-ih-gay) at Pine Needles to earn $1.8 million, the largest payout in the history of women's golf.

Lee closed with an even-par 71 to finish at 13-under 271 after the Australian flirted with the tournament record of 16 under set by Juli Inkster in 1999 at Old Waverly.

Wichita, KS – Ernie Yake’s sixth inning, bases clearing double led the Wichita Wind Surge to a 5-3 come-from-behind victory against the Frisco Roughriders on Sunday afternoon.

The Surge took four of six games from Frisco. The first place Wind Surge extended their lead over Tulsa to one-and-one half games.

The Roughriders took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the second and third innings. Chris Williams crushed a 107mph solo homer to left field in the fourth to tie the game at two. Simeon Woods-Richardson started for the Surge and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing six hits and racking up seven strikeouts.

Kody Funderburk pitched two innings and earned his league-leading sixth win of the season. Osiris German pitched the ninth and earned his first save of the season.

Wichita travels to Little Rock, Arkansas Tuesday to begin its longest road trip of the season.
