HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — Hutchinson Community College third baseman Ben McLaughlin became the 16th Blue Dragon in program history to earn All-America honors, being named a 2022 second-team All-American by the NJCAA on Monday.

The All-America honor caps a long list of postseason accomplishments for the sophomore from Golden, Colorado, who will continue his playing career with the College World Series-bound Arkansas Razorbacks next season.

McLaughlin is the seventh All-American Blue Dragon in the Ryan Schmidt era. He is also the second-straight third baseman to earn All-America honors, joining Austin Callahan, a second-team All-American last season.

Also this season, McLaughlin became the first Blue Dragon to be named Region VI Defensive Player of the Year. He was a first-team All-Jayhawk Conference Western Division and first-team All-Region VI selection as well.

The sophomore infielder started the season at first base and then moved to third base on March 24. He committed no errors at third base over the final 32 games of the regular season and had just two errors at the hot corner all season long. McLaughlin fielded .986 this season with only three errors in 222 fielding chances this season.

McLaughlin was the Blue Dragons’ undisputed offensive leader this season, hitting .411 (88 of 214) with 19 home runs and 83 RBIs. He also had 23 doubles and posted a .511 on-base percentage with team highs of 34 walks and 13 hit-by-pitches.

McLaughlin ranked third in RBIs, tied for fourth in home runs, fourth in hits, tied for second in doubles and is tied for ninth in runs score in Blue Dragon single-season history.

In conference games this season, McLaughlin hit .431 with 10 home runs, 13 doubles, 50 total hits and 39 RBIs with 23 walks. He fielded .991 in 32 KJCCC games this season.

McLaughlin had a 16-game and 13-game hitting streak this season. He had 29 multi-hit games (17 two-hit games and 12 three-hit games) and 23 multi-RBI games this season.

McLaughlin was named the NJCAA National Player of the Week on May 11, going 11 for 16 with three doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs in a four-game series against Dodge City.

McLaughlin tied for seventh in the NJCAA in RBIs and was eighth in the nation in total bases with 172. His 19 home runs tied for 15th in the NJCAA. McLaughlin was sixth in the Jayhawk Conference with a .411 batting average and was fifth in slugging percentage at .804.

The sophomore had 29 multi-hit games, including 12 three-hit games. He had 23 multi-RBI games with a season-high five RBIs against Dodge City on May 6. McLaughlin owns the Blue Dragon single-game RBI record with nine against Pratt on April 3, 2021.

Notre Dame beat Tennessee 7-3 in the deciding game of their super regional. Ole Miss won 5-0 at Southern Mississippi, Oklahoma beat No. 4 Virginia Tech 11-2 and Arkansas eliminated North Carolina 4-3. Texas A&amp;M clinched its CWS bid Saturday.

Duvall homers twice, Braves beat Bucs for 11th straight win

UNDATED (AP)— Adam Duvall homered twice off José Quintana, William Contreras and Matt Olson also connected, and the Atlanta Braves won their 11th straight game, 5-3 over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The defending World Series champion Braves began the day having trimmed five games off the New York Mets' division lead since the winning streak started June 1. They remain 5½ games back in the NL East.

This stretch is the club's best since it won 14 in a row from July 26 to Aug. 9, 2013.

During the streak, Atlanta has outscored opponents 74-30 with 22 homers. The pitching staff has a 2.32 ERA over the same span.

— J.D. Davis and Pete Alonso homered, Taijuan Walker struck out 10 and the New York Mets closed out their long trip to California with a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Chicago's six-game losing streak is its longest this year, dropping the Cubs a season-worst 13 games under .500 at 23-36.

— Ryan McMahon hit a go-ahead, two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning and Germán Márquez pitched seven strong innings to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 4-2 win against the San Diego Padres. UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Red Sox placed starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi on the 15-day injured list with lower back inflammation. Boston recalled right-hander Kutter Crawford from Triple-A Worcester to take Eovaldi's roster spot. Eovaldi is 4-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 12 starts. The move with Eovaldi was retroactive to June 9. Boston had already altered its rotation to give Eovaldi more recovery time before his next turn.

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Daniel Suárez became the first Mexican-born driver to win a NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday on Sonoma Raceway.

The 30-year-old Mexican driver held off Chris Buescher to claim his first victory in his 195th career start.

He also drove his Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet to the third Cup Series victory for this 2-year-old team co-owned by former driver Justin Marks and music star Pitbull. Suárez got past Buescher and took charge on this hilly road course in Northern California wine country early in the final stage. He persevered through a pit stop and a caution to emerge with his lead intact with 23 laps to go.

McIlroy defends Canadian Open title in strong LIV response

TORONTO (AP) — Rory McIlroy won the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday and gave the PGA Tour a strong response to the start of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational, closing with an 8-under 62 to win a wild race to the finish with Justin Thomas and Tony Finau.

McIlroy finished at 19-under 261 at St. George's for a two-stroke victory. Finau shot a 64 to finish second alone. Thomas bogeyed the final two holes for a 64 to finish third at 14 under. Justin Rose matched the tournament- and course-record with a 60 — with three eagles and three bogeys — to tie for fourth.

Grant becomes 1st female golfer to win on European tour

UNDATED (AP) — Linn Grant made history by becoming the first female player to win an event on the European tour. And she did it in amazing style.

The 22-year-old Swede obliterated a field of both male and female golfers at the Scandinavian Mixed event by winning by nine strokes after an 8-under 64 in the final round at Halmstad Golf Club.

She finished 14 strokes clear of the next best woman, Gabriella Cowley, who placed tied for 15th.

Grant started the day with a two-stroke lead and made eight birdies.

Henderson beats Weaver-Wright in playoff in ShopRite LPGA

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Brooke Henderson eagled the first playoff hole and beat Lindsey Weaver-Wright to capture the ShopRite LPGA Classic for her 11th win on tour.

Henderson shot a bogey-free, final-round 7-under 64 at Seaview Hotel and Golf Club to win for the first time in a year. The 24-year-old Canadian rallied from a four-shot deficit entering the final round of the 54-hole tournament to finish at 12-under 201.

Weaver-Wright was looking for her first LPGA Tour win. She forced the playoff with birdies on four of the final six holes, including the last two.

Thongchai Jaidee wins in Wisconsin, first Champ Thai winner

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Thongchai Jaidee became the first Thai winner in PGA Tour Champions history Sunday, closing with a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke victory in the American Family Insurance Championship.

A week after playing his way into the event with a 10th-place finish in Iowa, the 52-year-old Thongchai won in his 19th start on the 50-and-over tour.

Thongchai rebounded from a bogey on the par-5 16th with a birdie on the par-3 17th and closed with a par. He finished at 14-under 202 at University Ridge. Tom Pernice Jr. was second after a 66.

Verstappen wins in Azerbaijan after Leclerc engine failure

BAKU, Azerbaijan(AP) — Max Verstappen has extended his Formula One championship lead with a victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after Charles Leclerc retired from the lead with an engine failure.

Leclerc looked on course to challenge for the win but the Monaco driver's car started spewing smoke on lap 20 of 51 and he had to pull into the pits. It was his second retirement in three races.

Toyota dominates again to win 5th straight 24 Hours Le Mans

LE MANS, France (AP) — Toyota won the 24 Hours Le Mans in the classic endurance race for the fifth straight time with the No. 8 car finishing ahead of the No. 7 in another dominant performance.

New Zealander Brendan Hartley had clinched pole position and was at the wheel as Toyota Gazoo's No. 8 completed the race in sunny and warm conditions.

NASCAR's preseason Clash returns to LA Coliseum in 2023

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — NASCAR's season-opening exhibition Clash race is rolling back to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 2023. NASCAR announced Sunday it will return to the Southern California sports landmark next season after The Clash's highly successful debut there four months ago.

NASCAR got some of its best reviews in years for the 2022 Clash, which took place on a temporary 0.25-mile track inside the venerable Coliseum.

The Wind Surge dropped the series finale 6-1 against the Arkansas Travelers on Sunday afternoon as the Surge committed five errors and struggled to find an offensive rhythm.

The Surge trailed early as Dennis Ortega tied the game 1-1 in the second inning as he hit an RBI single that scored Kennie Taylor. Ortega finished the afternoon one for four with an RBI.

Wichita, KS- The Wind Surge fell short to the Arkansas Travelers 5-2 on Saturday night behind first inning struggles from Wichita starter Simeon Woods Richardson.

Arkansas scored four early runs in the first inning featuring a two-run homer from Travelers center fielder Cade Marlowe to give the Travelers a 4-0 lead.

After a shaky first inning on the mound, Wichita starter Simeon Woods Richardson settled in and went on to pitch four straight scoreless innings. Richardson allowed four runs on four hits and tallied three strikeouts before being relieved by Denny Bentley.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Former Iowa player Matt Gatens is leaving the Drake basketball staff to return to the Hawkeyes as an assistant. Gatens replaces the retiring Kirk Speraw. Gatens was a four-year starter for the Hawkeyes from 2009-12. He was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and two-time team captain. Gatens was Iowa's "Mr. Basketball" as a senior at Iowa City High in 2008. He played overseas and in the NBA Development League before working on Auburn's staff. He worked at Drake for four years.

NEW YORK (AP) — Ondrej Palat scored his second goal of the game with 1:50 remaining to break a tie and lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday night for a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference final.

Brandon Hagel added an empty-netter with 59 seconds to seal the two-time defending champioin Lightning's third straight win, the first by a road team in this series.

Andrei Vasilevskiy had 24 saves and Mikhail Sergachev provided Tampa Bay's first goal.

PGA Tour says Saudi-paid players no longer eligible for tour

UNDATED (AP) — The PGA Tour says members who are playing in the Saudi-funded league in London are no longer eligible to play tour events.

Commissioner Jay Monahan has sent out a memo indicating the sanctions against Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and 15 other players. The memo went out a short time after the LIV Golf Invitational outside London began with a 48-player field. The decision includes the Presidents Cup. Monahan says even if players resigned their membership, they are not eligible as nonmembers to get sponsor exemptions to tournaments.

Johnson had already given up his PGA membership, but Mickelson is not ready to.

The USGA has said players can still play the U.S. Open next week.

TORONTO (AP) — Wyndham Clark started the week with a late charge to play his way into the U.S. Open in a qualifier, and then he stayed hot Thursday in the RBC Canadian Open for a 7-under 63 to take the first-round lead.

Clark opened with five birdies in nine holes and kept bogeys off his card at St. George's Golf and Country Club for the third round of his PGA Tour career at 63 or lower.

Matt Fitzpatrick was a stroke back, and Doug Ghim and Harold Varner III followed at 65.

Cubs, Contreras avoid arbitration, agree to $9.625 million contract

UNDATED (AP) — Catcher Willson Contreras and the Chicago Cubs avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing to a one-year contract for $9.625 million. The agreement is at the midpoint between the $10.25 million the 30-year-old Contreras had asked for and the $9 million the Cubs had offered when figures were exchanged.

Contreras hit .237 with 21 homers and 57 RBIs in 128 games last season. He led National League catchers in assists for the third time. The two-time All-Star is batting .277 with 10 homers and 23 RBIs this season.

— Catcher Gary Sánchez and the Minnesota Twins have agreed to a $9 million, one-year contract. The deal avoids an arbitration hearing that had been scheduled for next week. State lawmakers table measure aimed at luring Commanders to Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Virginia General Assembly is tabling for the year legislation intended to lure the Washington Commanders to Virginia. That's according to a top state lawmaker who sponsored one version of the legislation.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw said in a brief interview that there were too many issues to be resolved and controversies surrounding the NFL team for the legislation to proceed. He says it could be reintroduced next year.

The team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The development came a day after an assistant coach for the team issued an apology for a comparison he made on social media between the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and the protests in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd.

Wimbledon record prize money at full-capacity tournament

LONDON (AP) — Wimbledon will offer a record total of $50.5 million in player compensation but the singles champions will receive less than the pre-pandemic amount. The All England Club says prize money excluding per diems totals a record $48.8 million. The men's and women's singles winners will each earn $2.5 million, 14.9% less than in 2019.

The overall prize money is an 11% increase over last year, when capacity was reduced because of coronavirus restrictions, and a 5.4% increase over 2019.

The oldest Grand Slam tournament begins June 27 and organizers highlighted plans for the grass-court competition to be at full capacity for the first time in three years.

Russian champion bashes IOC leaders, shows sympathy for Ukrainians

UNDATED (AP) —Olympic champion high jumper Maria Lasitskene has lashed out at the leaders of the IOC and World Athletics while expressing sympathy for her Ukrainian competitors in a heartfelt open letter.

Lasitskene will likely be kept out of the world championships in Eugene, Oregon, next month because of a World Athletics decision to bar all Russians in wake of the country's war against Ukraine.

The 29-year-old has never lost a major international competition. She has been among the few Russians allowed in international events in recent years despite the suspension of the country's track and field federation due to the long-running doping scandal in that country.
