TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tom Brady, the most successful quarterback in NFL history, has retired after winning seven Super Bowls and setting numerous passing records in an unprecedented 22-year career.

“This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore,” Brady wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram. “I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”

Brady has long stated his desire to spend more time with his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, and three children despite still playing at the top of his game.

The 44-year-old Brady goes out after leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title last season and NFC South championship this season.

News of Brady’s pending retirement leaked Saturday. His family and the Buccaneers denied that he had made a final decision, and he said Monday night on his SiriusXM podcast he wasn’t ready to finalize his plans.

“I’ve done a lot of reflecting the past week and have asked myself difficult questions,” Brady said in his post. “And I am so proud of what we have achieved. My teammates, coaches, fellow competitors, and fans deserve 100% of me, but right now, it’s best I leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes.”

Brady thanked the Buccaneers organization, his teammates, ownership, general manager Jason Licht, coach Bruce Arians, his trainer Alex Guerrero, agents Don Yee and Steve Dubin and his family in his nine-page post. He didn’t mention the New England Patriots, where he spent his first 20 seasons and won six Super Bowls. Of course, Brady thanked the Patriots and coach Bill Belichick after he left the team to sign with the Buccaneers in March 2020.

“To the Glazer family, thank you for taking a chance on me and supporting me,” Brady said of the Bucs’ owners. “I know I was demanding at times, but you provided everything we needed to win, and your ownership was everything a player could ask for.”

Brady said he’s still figuring out how he’ll spend his time but he plans to be involved in his TB12 health and wellness company, Brady clothing line and NFT company.

(AP) — Despite blowing a 21-3 first-half lead, and an interception by Patrick Mahomes in overtime that allowed the Bengals to set up the winning field goal, the Chiefs still accomplished plenty this season. They won their record sixth straight AFC West title, beat the Bills in the divisional round in one of the greatest finishes ever and became the first team to host four straight AFC title games. If not for a second half to forget, a costly mistake in overtime and some poise beyond their years from Joe Burrow and the long-downtrodden Bengals, they would be playing in a third straight Super Bowl, too.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pete Rozelle never liked the name that was half-jokingly suggested by Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt for the first annual game between the champions of the NFL and the AFL. Hunt agreed, telling the NFL commissioner they could surely think of something better to call it than the Super Bowl. Reporters, fans and many other football people were already calling it the Super Bowl, much to Rozelle's consternation. Two years later, the sport gave in and adopted the name officially for the event that was already growing into the sociocultural behemoth it is today. But the first Super Bowl had a fraction of the pomp and circumstance that surrounds this weeklong celebration of football, fandom and consumerism.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Green Bay's proven old pros carried the National Football League to a 35-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs of the American League on Sunday in the first Super Bowl under the brilliant direction of Bart Starr. Starr connected with 34-year-old Max McGee for two touchdown passes and sent Elijah Pitts and Jim Taylor hurtling into the line for three more. Vince Lombardi's NFL champs, held to a 14-10 edge in the first half, put a tremendous rush on Len Dawson, the Chiefs' passer, in the second half and pulled away steadily. The Packers were two-touchdown favorites going into this first meeting of NFL and AFL champions after the merger of June 1966. The Associated Press is republishing verbatim the story of that game.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) — John Harrar scored a career-high 19 points with 10 rebounds, Seth Lundy added 17 points and 11 rebounds and Penn State beat Iowa 90-86 in double overtime on Monday night to snap a three-game losing streak. Penn State guard Myles Dread made a contested a 3-pointer to tie it at 78 with 9.7 seconds left in the first overtime, and Iowa did not hit the rim on a forced jumper at the other end. Iowa opened the second overtime with a basket but did not make another field goal until Keegan Murray's 3-pointer with 1.5 left, and Dread sealed it with two free throws at the other end. Greg Lee added 16 points, Jalen Pickett had 13 and Dread finished with 12 for Penn State. Murray scored all 21 of his points after halftime for Iowa.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Evan McPherson kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime after Joe Burrow kept his cool while leading a furious second-half comeback to get the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl for the first time in 33 years with a 27-24 victory over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game. The Bengals, who will play the Rams for the NFL title, erased an 18-point deficit to take a late 24-21 lead but Harrison Butker's 44-yard field goal as time expired in regulation sent it to overtime a week after his 49-yarder on the final play of regulation did the same against Buffalo. Vonn Bell intercepted Mahomes on the third play of overtime and Burrow and the Bengals took over.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs had 13 seconds they'd rather forget late in the first half against the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC title game. Kansas City had the ball at the Bengals 5 with 13 seconds left but failed to score. That opened the door for the Bengals to rally in the second half and win 27-24 in overtime. Thirteen seconds was how long it took Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to get Kansas City into field goal range at the end of regulation the previous week in a thrilling divisional-round win over Buffalo. The Chiefs won the coin toss in overtime again this time, but Mahomes was intercepted on Kansas City's first possession.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A plaque honoring baseball legend Jackie Robinson that was vandalized in Georgia is coming to Kansas City's Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to be put on display. The sign was erected in 2001 outside the birthplace of Robinson near Cairo, Georgia. Community members there discovered last year that someone had shot the plaque multiple times. Curator and museum vice president Ray Doswell tells the Kansas City Star that displaying the defaced marker is an opportunity to teach the public about Robinson's story and combat hate. Robinson broke Major League Baseball's color barrier in 1947 when he became the league's first Black player. Robinson's hometown has replaced the damaged marker, with help from the league.

Akinjo 25 points as No. 8 Baylor overcomes WVU 81-77

UNDATED (AP) — James Akinjo scored 25 points and Matthew Mayer had all nine of his points in the closing minutes while putting No. 8 Baylor ahead to stay as the Bears overcame West Virginia 81-77 on Monday night. 

Mayer hadn't scored until his layup with 3:27 left to break a 66-66 tie, and put the Bears (19-3, 7-2 Big 12) in the lead for good. Jeremy Sochan had a steal in the backcourt and passed ahead to Mayer, who seconds later rebounded Sochan's second missed free throw and made a strong inside basket. He later added a 3-pointer. 

Taz Sherman, a Texas native, had a career-high 29 points with six 3-pointers to lead the Mountaineers (13-8, 2-6), who have their first six-game losing streak since the end of the 2012-13 season. Sean McNeil added 16 points.

UNDATED (AP) — Auburn remains No. 1 in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll for the second straight week. The Tigers have won 17 straight games. Gonzaga is No. 2 followed by UCLA and Purdue. No. 23 Texas re-entered the poll as the week's lone new addition.

Maxey leads 76ers past Grizzlies 122-119 in OT minus Embiid

UNDATED (AP) — Tyrese Maxey scored 33 points, including a driving layup with 26.4 seconds left in overtime that put Philadelphia ahead for good, and the 76ers beat the Memphis Grizzlies 122-119 without Joel Embiid (joh-EHL' ehm-BEED'). Tobias Harris added 31 points and Andrew Drummond had 16 points and 23 rebounds for Philadelphia, which won its fifth game in a row and 15th in the last 18. 

The 76ers improved to 4-8 without Embiid, who sat out for rest. Ja Morant scored 37 points and Desmond Bane had a career-high 34 for Memphis.

— Gary Trent Jr. scored 31 points, Pascal Siakam (see-A'-kam) added 25 and the Toronto Raptors snapped Atlanta's seven-game winning streak with a 106-100 victory. The Hawks were playing without All-Star guard Trae Young, who was scratched with a right shoulder contusion. Trent has scored at least 30 points in four straight games. Kevin Huerter (HUR'-tur) scored 26 points for Atlanta, which never reclaimed the lead despite pulling within one late in the fourth.

— Stephen Curry scored 21 of his 40 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 122-108 win over the Houston Rockets Monday night. It's the sixth consecutive win for the Warriors. Houston's skid at home is up to 11 straight games. The Warriors were clinging to a four-point lead in the fourth when Curry scored the next five points to make it 113-104 with four minutes left. Christian Wood led the Rockets with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Curry's 21 fourth-quarter points were the highest of his career. 

— Jaylen Brown had 29 points, Jayson Tatum added 20 points and 12 rebounds and the Boston Celtics rolled past the Miami Heat 122-92. Boston led by as many as 32 on their way to claiming the fourth victory in five outings. Marcus Smart added 16 points and seven assists. Miami has lost two straight and struggled mightily without Jimmy Butler, P.J. Tucker and Kyle Lowry. Max Strus finished 27 points for the Heat, Caleb Martin had 14 points and Bam Adebayo chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. 

— Reserve guard Brandon Goodwin matched a career-high with 21 points, Jarrett Allen added 16 and the Cleveland Cavaliers shook off an ugly road loss by rallying to beat the New Orleans Pelicans 93-90. The Cavs were without star guard Darius Garland due to a sore lower back. Kevin Love added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Cavs, who trailed by nine in the fourth quarter. Cedi Osman had a career-high 12 assists for Cleveland. Devonte' Graham scored 20, Jaxson Hayes 19 and Jonas Valanciunas (YOH'-nuhs val-uhn-CHOO'-nuhs) had 16 for the Pelicans. New Orleans has lost four straight.

— Lu Dort scored 18 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 98-81 to snap a seven-game losing streak. Josh Giddey added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the short-handed Thunder. Oklahoma City's scoring leader, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (shay GIHL'-juhs), is out until after the All-Star break with a sprained right ankle sustained last Friday against Indiana. CJ McCollum scored 21 points and Norman Powell added 18 for Portland. The Trail Blazers have lost four of five. 

— Rookie forward Isaiah Jackson scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first career double-double and led the Indiana Pacers past the Los Angeles Clippers 122-116. Both totals were season highs for Jackson. Duane Washington Jr. added 16 points and made all four of his 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. The Clippers were led by Amir Coffey with 27 points and Reggie Jackson with 21. Los Angeles went 4-4 on its road trip. The Clippers were up 88-82 early in the fourth but gave up 12 straight points and never led again.

— Alec Burks had 21 points off the bench, Evan Fournier also scored 21 and the New York Knicks routed the skidding Sacramento Kings 116-96 to snap a three-game losing streak. Julius Randle added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Knicks, who won for the second time in eight games. Tyrese Haliburton had 21 points and eight assists for the Kings, who have lost seven straight overall and 12 in a row on the road. Davion Mitchell added 18 points. Sacramento's last road victory was Dec. 1 at the Los Angeles Clippers. 

UNDATED (AP) — Utah Jazz forward Joe Ingles tore a ligament in his right knee that will require surgery. He is out indefinitely. Ingles was injured in the second quarter of the Jazz's game at Minnesota.

Portland Trail Blazers forward Nassir Little will miss the rest of the season because of a left shoulder injury that requires surgery for a torn labrum. Little was injured in the fourth quarter of Portland's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Jan. 25.

— Bradley Beal is expected to miss the next two games for the Washington Wizards after spraining his left wrist. Beal was injured in the third quarter at Memphis on Saturday. 

Reinhart hat trick leads Panthers over Blue Jackets 8-4

UNDATED (AP) — Sam Reinhart had his fifth career hat trick to lift the Florida Panthers over the Columbus Blue Jackets 8-4 for their fourth straight win. Mason Marchment had two goals and four assists for a career-high six points to help Columbus secure the top spot in the NHL standings heading into the All-Star break. 

Aleksander Barkov, Owen Tippett and MacKenzie Weegar also scored, and Reinhart added an assist. Anton Lundell had a career-high five assists. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 32 shots for his 23rd win. Patrik Laine had two goals, and Gus Nyquist and Emil Bemstrom also scored for the Blue Jackets. 

Elvis Merzlikins (murz-LEE'-kihnz) gave up four goals on 11 first-period shots and made 11 stops in the second period before Joonas Korpisalo (YOH'-nuhs kohr-pih-SAH'-loh) came in for the third period, stopping 13.

— Jaroslav Halak made 20 saves, Brock Boeser scored and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1. Alex Chiasson and Luke Schenn also scored for Vancouver, which had dropped four of five. Connor Murphy scored for the Blackhawks, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 stops. Playing without captain Jonathan Toews, who missed his second straight game because of a concussion, Chicago lost for the sixth time in seven games.

— Auston Matthews had three goals and an assist, and the Toronto Maple Leafs scored four times in the third period to rally to a 6-4 win over the New Jersey Devils. Mitch Marner had a goal and two assists, Ilya Mikheyev (mih-KY'-ehv) had a goal and an assist, and Jason Spezza also scored to help the Maple Leafs win their fourth straight. Akira Schmid had 27 saves as the Devils lost their fifth straight.

— Jordan Oesterle scored 2:11 into overtime as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Anaheim Ducks 2-1. Dylan Larkin had a game and an assist to help Detroit win for the second time in six games. Alex Nedeljkovic (neh-DEHL'-koh-vihch), starting for the 10th time in 11 games, had 14 saves. Rickard Rakell scored for Anaheim, and John Gibson finished with 26 saves. The Ducks snapped a two-game win streak. In the extra period, Oesterle one-timed a feed off a faceoff from Larkin for his first goal with the Red Wings.

— Tim Stutzle scored at 4:22 of overtime and the Ottawa Senators beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2. Thomas Chabot and Nick Paul scored in regulation for the Senators, and Matt Murray stopped 37 shots. Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse scored for the Oilers. Mikko Koskinen finished with 28 saves. With time winding down in the extra period, Stutzle squeezed the puck to the top corner to beat Koskinen for Ottawa's third win in eight games.

Wild LW Jordan Greenway gets 3-year, $9 million extension

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Wild and left wing Jordan Greenway have agreed to a three-year, $9 million contract extension. It runs through the 2024-25 season. 

The 24-year-old Greenway has four goals, nine assists and a career-high plus-17 rating in 33 games this season. He is third on the team with 82 hits. 

The Wild are 8-0-1 in their last nine games.

— New Jersey Devils coach Lindy Ruff will miss the next two games following the death of his father in western Canada. Leeson Ruff died on Friday at a hospital in Warburg, Alberta.

NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball labor negotiations are set to resume Tuesday, just over two weeks before the scheduled start of a spring training that's threatened by a lockout. The sport's ninth work stoppage began Dec. 2 after the expiration of a five-year labor contract.

The sides did not meet again on the central economic issues until Jan. 24, when players withdrew their proposal for more liberalized free agency. Management responded the following day by withdrawing its proposal for more limited salary arbitration.

Tuesday's session will be the first on the central issues since then and the sides are apart on many economic proposals. That leaves very little time to end the lockout and avoid disrupting the Feb. 16 scheduled start of spring training workouts. Players would need several days to travel to team complexes in Arizona and Florida, plus time to go through COVID-19 protocols.

Given the need for at least three weeks of workouts, Opening Day on March 31 would be threatened if there is not an agreement by late February or early March.

UNDATED (AP) — Tom Brady says he's still evaluating his future and the seven-time Super Bowl champion isn't ready to make a decision about retirement. Speaking on his SiriusXM podcast, Brady said that he thinks when the time is right, he'll be ready to make a decision, one way or the other."

The 44-year-old quarterback has already stated a desire to spend more time with his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen (jih-ZEHL' BUND'-chen), and three children.

He's under contract for 2022 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is coming off one of the best seasons in his 22-year career.

— Kirk Cousins will be the Pro Bowl injury replacement for Aaron Rodgers for a third time. Rodgers played much of the season for the Green Bay Packers with a broken toe. A pair of Tennessee Titans were also added as Pro Bowl injury replacements. Defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons is replacing Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, while left guard Rodger Saffold, a 12-year veteran, is filling in for Quenton Nelson of Indianapolis. This will be the first Pro Bowl appearance for both.

— The Minnesota Vikings have entered a fast-paced final stretch of their head coach search. Vikings officials flew to California on Monday to conduct a second interview with both Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell and Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. According to a person with knowledge of the process, New York Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham will interview at Vikings headquarters on Tuesday followed by Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh on Wednesday. 

— The Jacksonville Jaguars are rebooting their coaching search. The Jaguars interviewed former Las Vegas Raiders interim coach Rich Bisaccia on Monday and lined up a second interview Tuesday with former Philadelphia coach Doug Pederson. The Jaguars also want to interview Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell but will have to wait until after the Super Bowl to do it. Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich remains a possibility in Jacksonville, although he's starting to seem like a long shot.

— The Green Bay Packers have promoted Adam Stenavich from offensive line coach to offensive coordinator as they fill the vacancy created when Nathaniel Hackett left to become Denver Broncos head coach.

— Ravens coach John Harbaugh says that injured quarterback Lamar Jackson can resume workouts the day after the Super Bowl on Feb. 14.

— The Atlanta Falcons have hired former Chicago Bears assistant Michael Pitre as running backs coach. He replaces Desmond Kitchings, who left the Falcons with one game remaining in Atlanta's 7-10 season to become Virginia's offensive coordinator.

Wisconsin hires Bobby Engram as offensive coordinator

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin's new offensive coordinator is coming from the pro ranks. Bobby Engram has spent eight seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, first as a wide receivers coach and most recently as a tight ends coach. He's also familiar to Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst, because Engram was Chryst's wide receivers coach at Pittsburgh in the 2012-13 season. Engram's son, Dean Engram, will play wide receiver for Wisconsin in the upcoming season. 

Bobby Engram played in the NFL with the Chicago Bears (1996-2000), Seattle Seahawks (2001-08) and Kansas City Chiefs (2009). He had 650 career catches for 7,751 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Hutch High running back to play at Ottawa

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A plaque honoring baseball legend Jackie Robinson that was vandalized in Georgia is coming to Kansas City's Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to be put on display. The sign was erected in 2001 outside the birthplace of Robinson near Cairo, Georgia. 

Community members there discovered last year that someone had shot the plaque multiple times. Curator and museum vice president Ray Doswell tells the Kansas City Star that displaying the defaced marker is an opportunity to teach the public about Robinson’s story and combat hate. 

Robinson broke Major League Baseball's color barrier in 1947 when he became the league's first Black player. Robinson’s hometown has replaced the damaged marker, with help from the league.

Hayes had been told his performance would not be broadcast, but it was plenty loud in the background as Boomer Esiason, Bill Cowher and the other analysts talked.

UNDATED (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals beat the Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 in overtime in the AFC Championship game to advance to the Super Bowl. The Chiefs won the coin toss in overtime, but Patrick Mahomes threw an interception on Kansas City's opening possession. Under the NFL's playoff overtime rules, the first team to possess the ball can end the game with a touchdown. That's what Kansas City did the prior week in the divisional round against Buffalo. But the Chiefs didn't score this time. Patrick Mahomes threw an interception, and the Bengals drove deep into Kansas City territory to set up Evan McPherson's game-winning field goal.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark continues to score almost at will and present major problems for coaches tasked with finding a way to defend her. Clark leads the nation with better than 25 points per game after ranking first in scoring as a freshman with more than 26 a game. IUPUI coach Austin Parkinson's team upset Iowa in December. He made sure his defender stuck with Clark constantly and challenged her 3-point shots. Clark made only one 3-pointer in that game. Opponents also try to get physical with Clark. She makes them pay by hitting 90% of her free throws.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — D.J. Wilkins scored 20 points to propel Drake to a 77-68 victory over Loyola Chicago. Wilkins made 6 of 12 shots with two 3-pointers for the Bulldogs (16-6, 7-2 Missouri Valley Conference). Chris Knight paced the Ramblers (16-4, 7-2) with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

UNDATED (AP) — Last weekend was all about game-ending field goals and overtime wins in the NFL divisional round. On Sunday, it was all about comebacks as the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals advanced to the Super Bowl.

The Rams erased a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit in a 20-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Cooper Kupp caught two touchdown passes from Matthew Stafford for the Rams, who began the fourth quarter down 17-7 after wasting a multitude of scoring opportunities.

After Kupp's second TD catch and a tying field goal on a drive extended by Jaquiski Tartt's brutal dropped interception, the Rams drove for Matt Gay's go-ahead, 30-yard field goal with 1:46 to play.

Travin Howard made a game-sealing interception with 1:09 to play.

Stafford passed for 337 yards in the third playoff victory of his 13-year career, helping the Rams earn the right to host their own Super Bowl. 

Deebo Samuel and George Kittle caught touchdown passes from Jimmy Garoppolo (gah-RAH'-pah-loh), who threw for 232 yards in a heartbreaker for the 49ers. 

The Bengals are in the Super Bowl for the first time in 33 years after tying the biggest comeback in conference championship history.

Evan McPherson drilled a 31-yard field goal on the Bengals' first possession of overtime to complete a 27-24 win at Kansas City in the AFC title game. The game-winning kick came after Vonn Bell intercepted Patrick Mahomes on the third play of OT.

The Chiefs reached the end zone on each of their first three possessions to go up 21-3. They had a chance to end the half with an 18-point lead, but a Mahomes completion ended up short of the goal line on the final play of the half.

Joe Burrow shook off a slow start to finish 23 of 38 passing for 250 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Joe Mixon ran for 88 yards and Tee Higgins had six receptions for 103 yards. 

McPherson drilled four field goals, including a 52-yarder that put the Bengals ahead, 24-21. Harrison Butker's 44-yard kick tied the game on the final play of regulation.

Mahomes passed for 275 yards and hit Travis Kelce (KEHL'-see), Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman for touchdowns, but he was picked off twice in his fourth straight trip to the AFC Championship Game.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders have tapped the NFL's most successful franchise over the past two decades, hiring Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler as their new general manager. 

Owner Mark Davis announced Ziegler's hiring Sunday to replace the fired Mike Mayock. 

A person familiar with the search tells The Associated Press the Raiders are also finalizing a deal to make New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels the new coach in Las Vegas.

Nikola Jokic (YOH'-kihch) and the Denver Nuggets rolled to a 136-100 win over the Bucks. Jokic fell one rebound shy of his 13th triple-double of the season, providing 18 points and 15 assists. 

Aaron Gordon scored 24 points, Monte Morris had 18 and Will Barton 15 for the Nuggets, who are 4-0 on their six-game road trip. 

Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH'-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON'-poh) scored 22 of his 29 points in the first half.

Nadal wins Australian Open for 21st major title

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Rafael Nadal has won a men's record 21st Grand Slam singles title with a comeback, five-set victory over second-ranked Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final.

He had to do it the hard way after Medvedev won the first two sets in a final that started late Sunday local time and ended 5 hours and 24 minutes later in the early hours of Monday morning. It was the second longest Australian Open final after Novak Djokovic beat Nadal in five sets in 5 hours and 53 minutes in 2012.

The 35-year-old Spaniard now has one more Slam than Djokovic and Roger Federer, his long-time rivals in the so-called Big Three. Nadal also became just the fourth man in history to win all four of the sport's major titles at least twice.

Barty and Djokovic keep No.1 ranking; Collins into top 10

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Newly crowned Australian Open women's singles champion Ash Barty has maintained her more than two-year grip on the No. 1 ranking. 

Runner-up Danielle Collins jumped up 20 places to be in the top 10 for the first time after an impressive run to her maiden Grand Slam final.

Italy's Matteo Berrettini is the only mover inside the men's top 10, climbing to a new career high of No. 6. Novak Djokovic will continue as No. 1, with Daniil Mevedev staying second.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Lydia Ko earned a one-shot win over Danielle Kang at the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio.

Ko pulled ahead with a birdie on the 15th hole and matched scores with Danielle Kang the rest of the way, closing with a 3-under 69.

Ko won for the second straight season after enduring a three-year slump. It's the 17th victory of her LPGA Tour career.

Kang closed with a 68 in her bid to win back-to-back for the second time in three years. She won the season-opening Tournament of Champions a week ago in Orlando.

Sports Headlines for Monday

PITTSBURG – The Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field team earned its fourth and fifth qualifiers for the NJCAA Indoor Championships on Sunday at the KJCCC/Region VI Invitational at Pittsburg State University’s Plaster Center.

Freshman distance runner Collin Oswalt punched his nationals ticket in the 5,000 meters. Freshman Dimetre Brown earns a spot in the national championships in the long jump.

Oswalt, who qualified in the 3,000 meters last week at the All-Kansas Invitational, finished ninth on Sunday with a qualifying time of 15:09.99. That time is the ninth-best in the nation this season and fifth-fastest in Blue Dragon men’s indoor history. Oswalt placed eighth in the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:44.76.

Brown posted the eighth-best long jump in the nation in 2022. Brown won the KJCCC/Region VI Invitational with a jump of 23 feet, 5.5 inches.

The Blue Dragon men posted two other Top 5 all-time program performances on Sunday.

Freshman Alex Holt placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.40 seconds, which is the seventh-best time in team history.

Freshman Sharim Hamilton placed fifth in the 400 meters in a time of 49.08, the fifth-best time in Blue Dragon indoor history.

The Blue Dragons had four other Top 3 event finishes on Sunday.

Sophomore Donovan Hines placed third in the 60 meters in a time of 7.00 seconds.

Sophomore Clyedterrious Thompson was third in the long jump with a distance of 20-11.25. he was also third in the 200 meters in a time of 22.04 seconds.

Sophomore Simon Steinert placed third in the pole vault after clearing 13-5.5.

The Blue Dragons will next compete in the Herm Wilson Invitational at Wichita State on Friday and Saturday.

Dragons with two more national qualifiers Sunday

PITTSBURG – Hutchinson Community College sophomore distance runner Louise Cocking qualified for the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in a second event on Sunday at the KJCCC/Region VI Invitational at the Plaster Center.

Cocking won the women’s 5,000 meters on Sunday with a national qualifying time of 18:56.51. That mark is the second-fastest indoor 5,000-meter time in Blue Dragon history. Cocking is also qualified for the 3,000 meters last week at the All-Kansas Invitational.

Cocking also posted a second Top 5 Blue Dragon all-time indoor time. She finished third in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:12.01. That time is the fifth-fastest in Blue Dragon indoor history.

The Blue Dragons now have three qualifiers for the 2022 Indoor national championships in March at the Plaster Center. Pole Vaulter Kiana Brown is the other qualifier.

The Blue Dragons had one other event winner on Sunday. Sophomore Noel Buckhaultz won the Mile run with a time of 5:26.40, the fourth-best Mile indoor time in team history. Buckhaultz placed fifth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:18.13, the 11th-fastest time in team history.

Freshman Kenea Romney placed fourth in the 400 meters in a time of 1:00.25. She posted the fifth-fastest time in team history.

Cocking earns second national qualification

Freshman Aspen Goetz hit a grand slam in Game 1 and sophomore Haley Miller had a career-high four hits in the second game as the Hutchinson Community College softball team opened the 2022 season on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the Ottawa University JV on Saturday at Fun Valley.

Playing the earliest opening day in the program’s 37-year history, the Blue Dragons put together a pair of five-inning run-rule wins of 10-0 and 14-4. The Blue Dragons won their season opener for the third-straight season.

Goetz’s grand slam was part of a six-run second inning that gave the Blue Dragons a 10-0 in the opening game.

Miller had a perfect doubleheader for the Blue Dragons, going a perfect 6 for 6 Saturday. She was 2 for 2 with an RBI triple and two runs scores in the first game. Miller then went 4 for 4 with a triple, 3 RBIs and three runs scores. She also bunted for three hits.

The Blue Dragons combined for 24 runs and 28 hits in the doubleheader.

The Blue Dragon offense got off to a fast start in the opening game, scoring four runs in the first inning and six more in the second inning.

The Blue Dragons had 10 total hits with freshman leadoff hitter Emma Dougherty and Miller each collecting two hits. Goetz’s grand slam in the second inning and a first-inning double by Natalie Bevan were the only extra-base hits in the game.

Sophomore Madison Grimes had an RBI single. Bevan had an RBI double and bases-loaded walk. Carley Sterneker had an RBI with a bases-loaded walk and sophomore Easton Swanson had an RBI single.

Sophomore pitcher Sadie Loney (1-0) earned her 11th career victory, working the first two innings. She had two strikeouts and two walks. Loney and two relievers combined for a shutout. Morgan Pennycuff struck out two and allowed a hit in two innings. Riley Wertz struck out three and walked two in one inning.

Miller and Sterneker both went 4 for 4 in the second game to lead the Blue Dragons’ 18-hit attack.

The Dragons sent 14 batters to the plate in the second and collected nine hits in the frame.The Blue Dragons outhit Ottawa 18-5.Dougherty, Grimes and Swanson all had two hits in the game. Miller drove in three runs, while Bevan, Sterneker and Swanson had two RBIs apiece. Miller’s triple and doubles by Sterneker, Allie Stipsits and sophomore Lexie Pitcher were the only extra-base hits of the game.Freshman Kiersten Weitze (1-0) earned the pitching victory with two innings of scoreless relief work. She allowed only one walk and struck out one.Freshman Emily Munson started and worked the first two innings. She allowed five hits and four earned runs while striking out three and walking one. Wertz pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning – getting a diving catch from Sterneker in left field for the second out – to close out the game.The Blue Dragons are scheduled to play host to Independence at 2 p.m. on Friday at Fun Valley.
