LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Davion Warren had 23 points and made the go-ahead basket with 1:05 left as 12th-ranked Texas Tech finished undefeated at home with a 73-68 win over Kansas State. 

The 23-7 Red Raiders have won 21 consecutive home games, including all 18 this season. There were nine ties and eight lead changes in the second half. The last lead change came on the jumper by Warren. 

Bryson Williams added 19 points for the Red Raiders. Mike McGuirl had 18 points for 14-15 Kansas State.&nbsp;

WACO, Texas – For the second-straight day, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team had No. 1 McLennan Community College on the ropes.

For the second-straight day, the Highlanders exploded in the eighth inning and came back to defeat Hutchinson and sweep the three-game series.

The Blue Dragons led by five runs at the seventh-inning stretch, but the Highlanders rallied to defeat Hutchinson 9-7 on Monday at Bosque River Ballpark.

Hutchinson falls to 4-5 overall heading into the 2022 home opener against Coffeyville in a doubleheader on Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field. McLennan (10-5) was the preseason No. 1 team in the NJCAA this season, but dropped to No. 8 in the first regular-season poll, which was released during the game.

Sophomore Ben McLaughlin had four RBIs in going 3 for 5 with a double and home run. Jack Torosian was 2 for 5 for the Blue Dragons, who out-hit McLennan 9-7.

McLaughlin gave the Blue Dragons a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, to right field. The Dragons extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Sterling Sutcliffe scored on a Cade Baker double.

Leading 3-2 after six innings, the Blue Dragons erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh. McLaughlin drove in Bryce Logan and Torosian with a double down the right-field line. McLaughlin later scored on a balk. The Dragons took a 7-2 lead when Booga de la Garza singled home Kael Babin.

McLennan scored a single run in the seventh and then took advantage of three walks, two hit batsmen an error and a balk as the Highlanders scored six runs on just two hits in the eighth inning to take a 9-7 lead.

Reed Scott (0-1) was the losing pitcher for the Blue Dragons. Ben Dandelet started and worked the first four innings. He struck out two and allowed two hits and one walk.

Perron tacked on a third-period goal in the opener of a four-game trip. Brayden Schenn had two assists for St. Louis, and Jordan Binnington made 30 saves in his second shutout of the season. The Blues improved to 3-0-1 against the Blackhawks, closing out their season series. Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 stops for Chicago, turning away several quality chances for St. Louis.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten plans to take a group of athletes from member schools on a three-day trip to civil rights sites in Alabama this summer as part of a conference-wide program exploring race relations and social justice. The July 15-17 trip will be funded by the Big Ten as part of a program designed to provide additional educational experiences for athletes. Conferences across the country have developed social justice initiatives in the aftermath of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis in 2020. The Big Ten trip to civil rights sites is the first of its kind.

COLLEGE STATION, Pa. (AP) — Freshman Bryce McGowens poured in 25 points and Nebraska rolled to a 93-70 victory over Penn State.' McGowens sank 8 of 13 shots from the floor with three first-half 3-pointers and made all six of his free throws for the Cornhuskers (8-21, 2-16 Big Ten Conference), who snapped a four-game skid. He added six rebounds. Alonzo Verge Jr. pitched in with 15 points and five assists. McGowens hit three 3-pointers and had 13 points, Verge sank two 3s and had 12 and Derrick Walker scored all 10 of his points to spark Nebraska to a 49-31 lead at halftime. Seth Lundy, Jalen Pickett and Sam Sessoms all scored 12 for Penn State (12-14, 7-11).&nbsp;

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Caitlin Clark had 38 points and 11 assists and No. 21 Iowa clinched a share of the Big Ten championship with a 104-80 win over No. 6 Michigan. It's the first conference regular-season title for the Hawkeyes (20-7, 14-4 Big Ten) since 2008, who shared the championship with Ohio State. Clark, who came into the game as the nation's leading scorer at 27.1 points per game, had a career-high 46 points against the Wolverines in a 98-90 loss on February 6. She was just as effective in this game, hitting 11 of 18 shots from the field, including 8 of 11 in 3-pointers.

GAINSVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Hayley Frank scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Missouri to a 78-73 upset of No. 15 Florida to close the regular season. Izzy Higginbottom added 15 off the bench for the for the Tigers and Mama Dembele scored 13. The Tigers scored their last 12 points from the foul line, starting with Frank's three-point play, with 2:22 to play that made it 67-57, on 15 attempts. Higginbottom was 8 for 8 and Dembele, a 59% shooter, 9 of 10 as Missouri went 14 of 17 in the fourth quarter and 25 of 29 for the game. Jordyn Merritt had all of her career-high 23 points in the second half while KiKi Smith had 13 of her 15 in the fourth quarter for the Gators.

ATLANTA (AP) — Luiz Araujo and Dom Dwyer scored first-half goals and 17-year-old homegrown forward Caleb Wiley scored in his debut to spark Atlanta United to a 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City in a Major League Soccer opener. Luiz Araujo staked Atlanta United to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 20th minute. Dwyer added his in the 45th minute. Daniel Salloi's goal in the 85th minute pulled Sporting KC (0-1-0) within a goal. Wiley's first career goal came 4 minutes later to cap the scoring. Josef Martinez had two assists for the victors.

UNDATED (AP) — The madness arrived early this year. An unpredictable college basketball season took an unprecedented turn Saturday when the top six teams and seven of the top 10 teams lost. Gonzaga, Arizona, Auburn, Purdue, Kansas and Kentucky all went down. That marked the first time since The Associated Press began compiling a ranking during the 1948-1949 season that the top six teams lost on the same day. No. 9 Texas Tech also lost to set another record for most top-10 teams losing in one day. Only No. 7 Duke and No. 10 Baylor won, the Bears over the fifth-ranked Jayhawks. No. 8 Villanova avoided the carnage by default — the Wildcats don't play again until Tuesday.

MLB players, teams talk for 7th straight day as deadline nears

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Negotiators for locked-out major league players and owners recessed their talks until Monday, the day management has set as a deadline to salvage March 31 openers.

The sides held a series of short and more frequent meetings that stretched into last night before saying they would resume at 10 a.m., three hours earlier than usual.

MLB says that if there is not a deal by the end of Monday, there will not be enough training time to start the season as scheduled and play 162 games.

Entering the 88th day of the work stoppage they were still far apart on big issues that include luxury tax thresholds and rates, the size of the new bonus pool for pre-arbitration players and minimum salaries. 

— The Mets have hired Elizabeth Benn as director of major league operations, making her the franchise's highest-ranking female baseball operations employee ever. That's according to a person with knowledge of the hiring. Benn has worked for Major League Baseball since finishing a master's degree in philosophy at Columbia in 2017. She's had roles in youth programs, labor relations and baseball operations with the league.

UNDATED (AP) — The NBA-leading Phoenix Suns are just 1-2 since losing All-Star guard Chris Paul to a broken thumb.

Donovan Mitchell scored 26 points and Rudy Gobert (goh-BEHR') had a double-double as the Jazz won for the eighth time in nine games, 118-114 over the Suns. Gobert had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Jazz, who used a 16-3 run late in the third quarter to take a 94-89 advantage heading into the final period.

Jordan Clarkson had 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting, part of the Utah second unit that outscored Phoenix's bench, 43-11.

Devin Booker led Phoenix with 30 points, while Cameron Johnson and Deandre Ayton each added 23.

— Joel Embiid (joh-EHL' ehm-BEED') and James Harden carried the 76ers to a 125-109 win over the Knicks. Embiid scored 37 points and made a career- and NBA season-high 23 free throws. Harden had 29 points, 16 assists and 10 rebounds for the Sixers, who are 2-0 since he was activated. 

— The Nuggets pushed their winning streak to six games with a 124-92 dismantling of the Trail Blazers. JaMychal Green had 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, and Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH'-lah YOH'-kihch) contributed 18 rebounds, 11 assists and eight boards before sitting for good with 2:22 left in the third quarter. Demarcus Cousins was part of a Denver bench that combined for 76 points, finishing with 19 and eight rebounds.

— Buddy Hield (heeld) delivered 11 of his 21 points during the final eight minutes to help the Pacers pull away from the Celtics, 128-107. Oshae Brissett made a career-high six 3-pointers and finished with 27 points as Indiana won for just the second time in 10 games. Jayson Tatum finished with 24 points and Jaylen Brown scored 23 for Boston, which ended a seven-game road winning streak ended. 

— Reggie Jackson scored 26 points, including three key points down the stretch to lead the Clippers to a 99-98 victory over the Rockets. Jackson's jumper with about 90 seconds left put the Clippers up 97-95. Los Angeles scored 13 straight points to take an 87-83 lead with about nine minutes to go.

— The Pelicans administered a 123-95 thrashing of the Lakers as CJ McCollum provided 22 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Brandon Ingram and had eight assists while scoring 19 points. Jonas Valanciunas (val-an-CHOO-nuhs) had a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards against the Lakers, who have dropped 14 of their last 20.

— Kelly Olynyk (oh-LIH'-nihk) made a fadeaway 13-footer from the baseline at the overtime buzzer to give the Pistons a 127-126 win over the Hornets, Detroit's first win over Charlotte in 4 1/2 years. Saddiq Bey (sah-DEEK' bay) had 28 points and eight rebounds for the Pistons, who had dropped 15 straight to the Hornets. After scathing report, NCAA makes changes for March Madness

UNDATED (AP) —A year after the NCAA got called out for gender inequities between its men's and women's basketball tournaments, the organization has made changes over the past six months to make the events more equitable. 

Many of the changes so far have been relatively easy to do. The women's tournament field expanded to 68 teams and also will use the phrase "March Madness" in branding and social media. The NCAA has spent millions more on the women's tournament this year to make it more financially equal to the men.

UNDATED (AP) — Illinois still has a decent shot at grabbing the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten men's basketball tournament.

Kofi Cockburn and Alfonso Plummer combined for 53 points as 15th-ranked Illinois outscored Michigan, 93-85.

Cockburn delivered 27 points in helping the Illinois get within one game of Wisconsin for the Big Ten lead. Plummer provided 23 of his 26 points by halftime for the Illini, who saw a 15-point, second-half lead cut to two in the closing minutes. Trent Frazier hit a 3-pointer with 45.3 seconds left to put Illinois up by seven.

Also in the Big Ten, Fatts Russell matched his career high with 27 points as Maryland knocked off No. 22 Ohio State, 75-60. Eric Ayala added 23 points and helped the Terrapins hold the Buckeyes to 36% shooting. The Terps had dropped six of eight before holding OSU leading scorer E.J. Liddell to 11 points.

— Fabian White Jr. and Josh Carlton led 14th-ranked Houston past SMU, 75-61. Teravainen, Aho score in Hurricanes' fifth straight win

UNDATED (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes have strengthened their hold on first place in the NHL's Metropolitan Division by earning their fifth straight win.

Teuvo Teravainen (TAY'-voh tehr-ah-VY'-nehn) had a goal and an assist as the Hurricanes stifled the Oilers, 2-1. Sebastian Aho (AH'-hoh) also scored and Frederik Andersen made 29 saves for his league-leading 29th victory.

Derek Ryan had the lone tally for Edmonton, which had a goal wiped out by an offsides call in the opening minute.

— The Penguins pulled out a 3-2 win at Columbus on Sidney Crosby's goal with 2:14 remaining. Evgeni Malkin added a goal and an assist as Pittsburgh won its second straight since a three-game skid. Chad Ruhwedel also scored, Bryan Rust added two assists and Casey DeSmith stopped 32 shots to improve to 3-0 against Columbus.

— Thatcher Demko made 31 saves and blanked the Rangers until the third period of the Canucks' 5-2 victory. Matthew Highmore and Tyler Myers each had a goal and an assist for Vancouver, which also received goals from Tanner Pearson, Juho Lammikko and Elias Pettersson. Alexandar Georgiev (GOHR'-gee-ehv) started for the first time since Jan. 27 and made 29 saves for New York.

— The Blues blanked the Blackhawks, 4-0 as Jordan Binnington stopped 30 shots in his second shutout of the season. Perron added a third-period goal to seal the Blues' fourth straight win.

— Michael Raffl (RAH'-ful) ended his 16-game goal drought by netting a pair in the Stars' 4-2 victory over the Sabres. Roope Hintz and Denis Gurianov also scored for the Stars, who have points in seven of their last nine games. Tage Thompson and Cody Eakin scored in Buffalo's sixth straight loss. 

— The Islanders were 4-0 winners over the Ducks as Ilya Sorokin (sah-ROH'-kihn) stopped 34 shots in his fifth shutout of the season. Casey Cizikas had a goal and an assist to help New York improve to 2-1-1 on its five-game road trip. Noah Dobson, Andy Greene and Kieffer Bellows netted the other goals.

— James Reimer turned back 36 shots to backstop the Sharks' third win in 13 games, 3-1 versus the Kraken. Rookie Scott Reedy broke a 1-1 tie in the second period with his first NHL goal in six games. Morgan Geekie and Jona Gadjovich also tallied for San Jose.

— The Jets ended a four-game skid as Kyle Connor scored twice in the third period of their 5-3 decision over the Coyotes. Adam Lowry, Evgeny Svechnikov (SVEHCH'-nih-kahv) and Blake Wheeler scored for the Jets, who rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the third period. Eric Comrie made 27 saves in his first start since Feb. 17.

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) — Defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson held off Austin Dillon and Daniel Suarez in a tense finish to win at Fontana for the second time.

After starting at the rear under penalty, Larson raced to his 17th career victory and the 11th in his year-plus at Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. 

Larson had victory in sight with eight laps to go when Chase Elliott spun and forced a race-record 12th caution. Elliott had a beef with his Hendrick teammate several laps earlier when he got pinched into the wall by Larson, who apologized for it on the radio.

Dillon came in second and Suarez slipped to fourth behind Erik Jones as Chevrolets took the top four spots.

McLaughlin wins 1st IndyCar race in St. Pete season opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Scott McLaughlin got his first IndyCar Series victory in the season-opening race through the downtown streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. 

McLaughlin led 49 of the 100 laps but had to hold off reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou over the closing laps to secure the victory. Will Power finished third to put two Team Penske drivers on the podium.

McLaughlin is the three-time Australian V8 Supercars champion but struggled as an IndyCar rookie last season. 

Augusta on his mind: Straka rallies to win the Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Sepp Straka was able to capture the PGA's Honda Classic despite trailing by five strokes entering the final round.

Straka is the first Austrian winner in PGA Tour history after firing a 4-under 66 that left him 10 under.

Shane Lowry shot a third straight 67 but fell one shot back.

First-round leader Kurt Kitayama was alone in third at 8 under.

Jimenez's second ace propels him to Cologuard Classic win

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)— Miguel Angel Jimenez had his second hole-in-one of the tournament and closed with a 7-under 65 to win the Cologuard Classic. Jimenez started the final round with a two-shot lead and got off to a birdie-eagle start at Tucson National. 

The 58-year-old Spaniard ended any hope of a late rally with an ace on the 178-yard, par-3 14th to match the one he had at No. 7 in the opening round. Jimenez closed with four straight pars to finish at 18-under and win for the second time in three PGA Tour Champions starts this season.

FIFA: No World Cup qualifying ban yet; Russia to play as RFU

UNDATED (AP) — Sweden's soccer federation has maintained its objection to playing any matches against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine and expressed its disappointment with FIFA (FEE'-fah) for keeping the Russians in World Cup qualifying.

DIEZ, Germany (AP) — The government of Qatar (KUH'-tur) paid more than $10 million to a company staffed by former CIA operatives for a multi-year covert operation aimed at silencing critics of the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to the wealthy Gulf nation. That's according to internal company documents reviewed by The Associated Press. 

The records show that the primary target of the operation was the head of the German soccer federation, Theo Zwanziger, who publicly attacked Qatar's poor human rights record and pushed for the World Cup to be moved.

Matchups set for Tuesday Region VI Quarterfinals

WACO, Texas – The Hutchinson Community College baseball team was nearly no-hit in Game 1 and let a late lead slip away in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the top-ranked junior college baseball team in the nation on Sunday.

The Blue Dragons lost the first two games of a three-game series with No. 1 McLennan 8-0 and 5-2 at Bosque River Ballpark. The final game of the series will be at Noon on Monday.

The Blue Dragons fall to 4-4 overall, McLennan is 9-5-1 overall.

The Blue Dragons took a 2-1 lead into the eighth when the Highlanders grabbed the lead on one swing of the bat when Cole Fontenelle hit a line-drive grand slam to right field to give McClennan a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Blue Dragons scored single runs in the third and fifth innings.

With two out in the third, Jack Torosian was hit with a pitch and took second on a Ben McLaughlin single. Torosian then scored on a Jon Jenkins single to right field for a 1-0 lead. McClennan immediate tied the game in the bottom of the third with a triple and RBI groundout.

Kael Babin led off the fifth inning with a walk. He then stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball for a 2-1 lead.

The Dragons missed a great scoring chance in the seventh when Bryce Logan and Daniel Bebee started the inning with a single and walk, respectively, and moved up to third on a Babin sacrifice bunt. The Dragons, who stranded eight runners on base, left Logan and Bebee in scoring position.

Hutchinson starting pitcher Jack Whitlock had a strong start in getting a no decision. Whitlock went six full innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run with a walk and three strikeouts.

Chase Torkelson (1-1) suffered the loss with two innings of work

McLennan starter Will Carsten carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the Highlanders’ 8-0 victory in Game 1.

— It was a hard-fought game in Derby, but&nbsp;the Panthers walked off the court with a piece of the AVCTL-I title alongside Maize after a 53-46 win over Hutchinson Friday night.

It was a grind for the Panthers in the matchup against the Salthawks, similar to the 59-56 loss in Hutch earlier this season. With Derby leading 48-44 with 43 seconds left to play, Derby senior Jameer Clemons drove down the lane and scored a layup that drew a foul in the process. Clemons hit the free throw to create the separation the Panthers needed. A pair of free throws by Deshawne Titus sealed the game for Derby.&nbsp; Hutchinson behind Nic Lange's huge 8-point 3rd quarter had tied the game going into the 4th&nbsp;at 38, but 4 quick 4th&nbsp;quarter turnovers hurt the Salthawk's chances. Those giveaways combined with Derby's Dallas Metzger hitting his 4th&nbsp;three pointer of the game and a Deshawne Titus three pointer pushed Derby to the win, as the Panthers outscored the Salthawks 15-8 in the final quarter.

Hutchinson is now 11-8 and will play at home on Wednesday, March 2nd&nbsp;in the first round of sub-state. They'll find out who they play Saturday.&nbsp; Derby is now 13-7 and will also host a 1st&nbsp;round game in sub-state.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salthawk boys close regular season with 53-46 loss at Derby Friday

On February 1st, Derby beat the Hutch Salthawks 73-44 on the Salthawks home floor.&nbsp; On Friday night, The Hutch High girls played hard and just about pulled off the win coming close, but lost to Derby 39-31.

Derby enjoyed a strong 1st&nbsp;quarter leading 14-6&nbsp;at the end of the first frame. The panthers extended the lead to 7 at intermission 22-15.&nbsp; But Hutch made the 2-3 zone defense work keeping Panther junior Addy Brown to only two points at the half. The Panthers Maryn Archer led Derby with 12 first half points.&nbsp; 

Hutchinson got a quick 3rd&nbsp;quarter start from senior Gracie Keeler with 2 quick baskets to cut the lead to three and Hutch outscored Derby in the 3rd&nbsp;quarter 9-6 to make it a four point game going into the 4th&nbsp;with Derby leading 28-24.

Derby got going with two Addy Brown free throws plus a Tatum Beottjer basket and 1 with 4:07 to go, then a gutsy three pointer with a minute to go to extend the lead to eight and end the game with the score 39-31.

Derby ends the season with a 19-1 record and the AVCTL Division I title.&nbsp; This match up was the closest of all their wins this season as a scrappy bunch of Salthawks (16-4) made it interesting.&nbsp; 

The Hutch High girls will host Manhattan at 6 p.m. on Tuesday to open substate play.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg will return for a fourth season but has agreed to a pay cut and a reduced buyout if he's fired after next season. Athletic Director Trev Alberts made the announcement on Thursday night. Hoiberg is 21-65 overall and 6-49 in the Big Ten entering a home game against No. 25 Iowa on Friday. The Huskers are 7-20 this season, with just one win in Big Ten play. Hoiberg's salary will be reduced to $3.25 million from $3.50 million, and he will forfeit a $500,000 retention bonus. His contract buyout was reduced from $18.5 million to $11 million.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Caitlin Clark scored 16 of her 32 points in the fourth quarter and No. 21 Iowa held off Rutgers 87-78. The Hawkeyes had a 15-point lead late in the second quarter and took a 62-54 lead into the fourth quarter. Shug Dickson's second-straight jumper with a minute left made it 81-78. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton freshman Ryan Nembhard will miss the rest of the season after injuring his right wrist. Nembhard was hurt when he collided with St. John's Posh Alexander during the Bluejays' 81-78 win Wednesday night. Nembhard will require surgery. He started all 27 games for the Bluejays and averaged more than 11 points and four assists.&nbsp;

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said defenseman Tony DeAngelo could miss a month due to an injury that he described as "something in his midsection."

DeAngelo left the Hurricanes' victory Monday night in Philadelphia early. He has nine goals and 40 points this season to lead Carolina's defensemen.

Labor talks resume with MLB deadline looming

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The two sides in the major league lockout met for the fourth straight day at Roger Dean Stadium, the idle spring training home of the Miami Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals. 

The union made proposals in two small areas, narrowing the number of young players who could earn additional major league service for accomplishments and loosening the union's proposed restrictions on high amateur draft picks in consecutive years. The latter would be an attempt to assist lower revenue teams.

They scheduled another day of talks on Friday.

MLB told the union that it will cancel regular-season games if a contract is not agreed to by the end of Monday, a deadline the union has not accepted.

HOUSTON (AP) — Former Houston Oilers receiver Ken Burrough has died at 73. 

Burrough was the 10th overall pick in 1970 by New Orleans, but played just one season for the Saints before being traded to the Oilers. He spent the next 11 seasons in Houston, where he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1975 and 1977. 

Burrough led the NFL in receiving yards in 1975 with a career-high 1,063. He piled up 6,906 yards receiving and 47 touchdowns with the Oilers.

Burrough was the last NFL player to wear No. 00 as the league restricted the use of Nos. 0 and 00 in 1973. The league allowed players who already had those numbers to retain them until retirement.

LINCOLN, NEB. (AP) — Nebraska basketball coach Fred Hoiberg will return for a fourth season but has agreed to a pay cut and a reduced buyout if he's fired after next season,

Hoiberg is 21-65 overall and 6-49 in the Big Ten. The Huskers have had three straight 20-loss seasons.
