LSU has 23 victories, its most since the 2011-12 season. Mulkey won three national titles in 21 years as Baylor's coach and this is her first season with LSU. South Carolina remained the unanimous No. 1 team in the poll. The Gamecocks were followed by Stanford, North Carolina State, Louisville and Baylor. Michigan, Connecticut, Iowa State and Indiana round out the top 10. The Hoosiers fell five spots after losing twice.

'I've done this before': Martelli leads Michigan for Howard

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Phil Martelli is all set to guide Michigan for the rest of the college basketball regular season. The 67-year-old Martelli will fill in while Wolverines head coach Juwan Howard serves a five-game suspension. Howard was penalized after hitting a Wisconsin assistant coach in the head during a postgame handshake line Sunday. 

Martelli has spent nearly four decades as a coach in big-time college hoops, and led Saint Joseph's within one win of the Final Four in 2004. 

His first game will be Wednesday night when the Wolverines host Rutgers. Howard is expected to return for the Big Ten Tournament, which begins March 9 in Indianapolis.

Owners, players agree to meet for third day in a row Wednesday

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Another day ran off the clock in talks to salvage opening day when locked-out baseball players proposed what they considered a small move forward in drawn-out labor negotiations and management termed it a third straight step backward. 

Management again proposed a federal mediator enter the negotiations, but the union immediately turned down that idea, leaving Major League Baseball on track to lose regular-season games to a labor dispute for the first time since 1995. 

Less than a week remains until the sides reach what management says is a Monday deadline for a deal that would allow the season to start as scheduled on March 31. 

Still, the sides agreed to meet for a third day in a row Wednesday, the 84th day of the second-longest work stoppage in baseball history.

— One-time Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in a case arising from an altercation with his teenage daughter. Hamilton pleaded guilty Tuesday to unlawful restraint under a plea deal that dismisses a 2020 felony indictment for injury to a child. The judge fined Hamilton $500 and ordered him to pay court costs, do community service and attend parenting and anger management classes. His 14-year-old daughter told her mother, Hamilton's ex-wife, that her father struck her after he became enraged by a comment from her.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers says he's still making up his mind about whether he wants to return to the Green Bay Packers next season. Rodgers discussed his future Tuesday while talking on "The Pat McAfee Show". 

Rodgers said after the season that he would try to make a decision about his 2022 plans in relatively short order rather than dragging out the process. The reigning MVP said at the time that he hadn't ruled out any option, including returning to the Packers for an 18th season, retiring or requesting a trade.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Brendan Nugent has been hired as the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive line coach. He replaces Frank Smith, who left the Chargers to become the Miami Dolphins' offensive coordinator. 

Nugent had spent the previous seven seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He coached the offensive line last season after being the assistant line coach the previous four years. Saints quarterbacks have been sacked a league-low 131 times since 2017. 

— Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores thinks race placed a factor in the team's decision to fire him in January. Speaking on the "I Am Athlete" podcast, Flores alleged he was given tasks that he doesn't think would have been required of a white head coach. Flores did not offer specifics on what tasks he was asked to do that he believes were based on race. Flores was hired recently as a senior defensive assistant by the Pittsburgh Steelers. 

American women players settle suit vs US Soccer for $24M

UNDATED (AP) — U.S. women soccer players have reached a landmark agreement with the sport's American governing body to end a six-year legal battle over equal pay. The deal promises them $24 million plus bonuses that match those of the men. The USSF also agrees to establish a fund with $2 million to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts aimed at growing the sport for women.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Phil Mickelson is apologizing for comments he made about the Saudis and the financing of a rival league. Mickelson claims the comments golf writer Alan Shipnuck posted were off the record. Shipnuck wrote that was never the case. Mickelson says he regrets what he said and that his comments were reckless. Meanwhile, KPMG announced that the company and Mickelson have agreed to part ways. Their sponsorship has been around since 2008. 

Medvedev beats Paire, moves into second round in Acapulco

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Daniil Medvedev has beaten Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-4 to move into the second round at the Mexican Open. The 26-year-old Russian can move to No. 1 in the men's tennis rankings if he wins the title here. Medvedev, who won the 2021 U.S. Open and was a runner-up last month at the Australian Open, is playing in Mexico for the first time. He'll play either Alex Hernandez or Pablo Andujar in the next round.

Spanish figure skater Barquero fails Olympic drug test

BEIJING (AP) — Spanish figure skater Laura Barquero has become the fourth athlete to fail a doping test at the Beijing Olympics after testing positive for the banned steroid clostebol. 

Barquero and her partner Marco Zandron finished 11th in the pairs competition on Saturday. The International Testing Agency says her positive sample was given after the short program on Friday and the case will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. 

There were positive tests in Beijing for an Iranian athlete and two Ukrainians. Russian skater Kamila Valieva tested positive in a sample taken before the Olympics.

Wisconson hires Sheridan and alters roles for Bostad, Turner

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconson has hired Bill Sheridan to coach inside linebackers as one of three changes to Paul Chryst's staff. Chryst also announced Tuesday that Bob Bostad is switching from inside linebackers coach to offensive line coach and Mickey Turner is moving from tight ends coach to an off-field role in which he will lead Wisconson's recruiting efforts.

It was the second time in three days the Hawkeyes (18-7, 12-4 Big Ten) defeated the Hoosiers (19-6, 11-4). Czinano, third in the nation in field-goal percentage, was 13 of 17 from the field. BOSTON (AP) — David Pastrnak had two goals and an assist and the Boston Bruins rolled past the Western Conference-leading Colorado Avalanche 5-1. Patrice Bergeron, Jake DeBrusk and Charlie Coyle also scored for Boston, which has won two straight. Jeremy Swayman had 28 saves and Taylor Hall added three assists. Pastrnak now has a team-leading 27 goals on the season.

Nathan MacKinnon had the lone goal for Colorado, which had its two-game win streak snapped. Darcy Kuemper finished with 40 saves.

Samuel Montembeault made 35 saves. Ilya Mikheyev and Pierre Engvall scored for Toronto. Petr Mrazek allowed five goals on 25 shots.

No. 22 Ohio State outlasts Indiana in overtime, 80-69

UNDATED (AP) — Malaki Branham scored 27 points and No. 22 Ohio State rallied to beat Indiana 80-69 in overtime. Indiana led by four with 2:47 to go in regulation, but E.J. Liddell forced a steal with 1:11 remaining and slammed home the tying dunk with six seconds left. 

The Hoosiers jumped ahead by two early in overtime, but Jamari Wheeler hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:58 left as Ohio State took the lead for good. 

Liddell had 16 points and Eugene Brown III scored 10. The Buckeyes led by 10 with 12:06 remaining in the second half, but the Hoosiers used an 18-4 run to grab a 59-55 lead with 5:09 left. 

Xavier Johnson led Indiana with 16 points, going 10 of 10 from the free-throw line.

— Adam Flagler scored a career-high 29 points and James Akinjo's jumper with 14 seconds remaining provided the winning points as No. 10 Baylor defeated Oklahoma State 66-64 in overtime. Michigan's Howard suspended 5 games for Wisconsin melee

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard has been suspended the final five games of the regular season and fined $40,000 for hitting a Wisconsin assistant in the head, triggering a postgame melee. The Big Ten Conference also suspended three players one game for the altercation following the 15th-ranked Badgers' 77-63 win on Sunday: Michigan's Moussa Diabate and Terrance Williams II, and Jahcobi Neath of Wisconsin. 

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard was fined $10,000 for violating the conference's sportsmanship policy, but was not suspended. 

Howard is expected to be back for the Big Ten tournament, which begins March 9 in Indianapolis.

UNDATED (AP) — Gonzaga is the unanimous No. 1 in the latest Associated Press men's basketball poll. The Zags aren't likely to budge the way they're dominating the West Coast Conference. 

Gonzaga remained at No. 1 for the second straight week, receiving all 61 votes from a media panel. Arizona moved up a spot to No. 2 for its highest ranking in four years, with Auburn, Purdue and Kansas rounding out the top five. 

Gonzaga is winning its WCC games by an average of 27 points. Saint Mary's gave the WCC two ranked teams and No. 25 Iowa moved into the poll for the first time this season.

NCAA, New Orleans gearing up for a more normal Final Four

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Expect the NCAA Men's Final Four to have a more familiar look and feel to it this spring. And that's not just because it'll be in New Orleans for a record sixth time. A capacity crowd of about 70,000 is expected in the Superdome. The free, open Friday practices and the college All-Star game are back on the schedule. So are the sprawling Fan Fest and March Madness Music Festival. The National Association of Basketball Coaches convention that is traditionally held in conjunction with the Final Four also remains on track to take place as an in-person event for the first time since 2019.

Veteran guard Goran Dragic to sign with Brooklyn Nets

UNDATED (AP) — Goran Dragic (DRAH'-gihch) plans to sign with Brooklyn, giving the Nets a veteran boost in the backcourt. Agent Bill Duffy said Monday that Dragic was going to Brooklyn, where the Nets need guard help after trading James Harden to Philadelphia. Ben Simmons, acquired in that deal, still isn't ready to play after sitting out all season, and Kyrie Irving still can't play in home games because he hasn't met New York City's vaccine requirement. Dragic played in just five games this season in Toronto, where he was traded from Miami in the offseason in the deal for Kyle Lowry. 

— When the All-Star break ends, the stretch run begins. The All-Star weekend came at about the 60-game mark for teams, far beyond the midpoint of the 82-game schedule. But, the Lakers might be without Anthony Davis for more than a month, putting a heavy burden on LeBron James.

MLB makes slight moves toward players in longer lockout talk

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Baseball negotiations resumed with renewed intensity Monday in an effort to salvage opening day, and Major League Baseball made slight moves toward locked-out players. With perhaps a week left to salvage opening day, union head Tony Clark attended negotiations for the first time since the MLB lockout began, accompanied by New York Mets stars Max Scherzer and Francisco Lindor.

MLB increased its offer of a bonus pool for pre-arbitration players by $5 million to $20 million, a fraction of the $115 million the union has asked for.

Clubs also increased their proposal for a lottery for the amateur draft from the top three picks to the top four. Players have asked for the top eight.

Medina Spirit stripped of Kentucky Derby victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Medina Spirit has been stripped of the victory in last year's Kentucky Derby and Mandaloun has been declared the winner in a ruling by state racing stewards.

The since-deceased Medina Spirit tested positive after the race last May for a steroid, betamethasone, that is legal in Kentucky but banned on race day. Medina Spirit finished half a length ahead of Mandaloun in the race, giving trainer Bob Baffert what was then his seventh Kentucky Derby title. Baffert was subsequently banned for two years by Churchill Downs following the positive test.

Monday's decision by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission makes Medina Spirit the second horse in the 147-year history of the race to be disqualified for a banned substance. The first was Dancer's Image in 1968.

Djokovic wins his first match of 2022 in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Novak Djokovic has won his first match of the year after beating Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-3 to open the Dubai Championships. Djokovic couldn't defend his Australian Open title last month because he was deported from the country for being unvaccinated. The United Arab Emirates allowed him entry, and Djokovic cashed in at a tournament he's won five times. He next faces Karen Khachanov or Alex de Minaur.

O'Connell, Vikings tap Wes Phillips as offensive coordinator

HOUSTON (AP) — Wes Phillips will follow Kevin O'Connell to Minnesota from the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. Phillips will serve as offensive coordinator for the Vikings under their new head coach O'Connell. Phillips was one of five more assistants for O'Connell's staff finalized on Monday. The others are special teams coordinator Matt Daniels, defensive backs coach Daronte Jones, assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica and outside linebackers coach and pass rush specialist Mike Smith. Phillips was the tight ends coach for the Rams for the last three years and added the passing game coordinator title in 2021.

— The Houston Texans on Monday announced their full coaching staff under new coach Lovie Smith. New additions to the staff include tight ends coach Tim Berbenich, who spent last season as a running backs coach for the Raiders and offensive line coach George Warhop, who had the same job in Jacksonville for the past three seasons.

— The NFL scouting combine will have a host of COVID-19 mitigation measures that are rankling agents and prospects. The combine told all 324 players invited to the league's annual evaluation gathering that they'll have to spend their time in a bubble and can only bring one support person such as a personal trainer. Most prospects have a team of support that includes nutritionists, therapists and others. Agents are miffed the restrictions were issued over the weekend with the Omicron variant wave receding. The NFL has resisted that idea of keeping players in a bubble during the pandemic. 

Pelé extends hospital stay due to infection

SAO PAULO (AP) — Pelé has extended a scheduled stay in a Sao Paulo hospital due to a urinary infection. Hospital Albert Einstein says in a statement on Monday that 81-year-old Pelé came in on Feb. 13 to continue treatment for his colon cancer, and days later doctors found the infection. The hospital says his clinical condition is stable, and his release should take place in the next few days. Pelé has had chemotherapy to treat the tumor that was found during routine exams at the end of August.

Sports Headlines for Tuesday

PRATT, Kan. — No. 19 Hutchinson (22-7, 16-7) struggled from distance early and failed to force Pratt (13-16, 8-15) into turnovers.&nbsp;

Hutchinson started 1 of 11 from three before nailing 50% of its final 22 attempts. Pratt only turned the ball over two times in the first half, despite entering play Monday with a league-leading 17 turnovers per game.&nbsp;

Pratt got stellar performances from all of its starters who each registered at least 13 points.&nbsp;

The Beavers were led by Cam Morris, who had 29 points and 13 rebounds. He was one of three Beavers to register a double-double.&nbsp;

Harrison Eghan scored 16 points and grabbed 10 boards. D.J. Bailey scored 15 and dished 13 assists.&nbsp;

Pratt finally turned the ball over in the second half (13 total), but Hutchinson scored only 15 points off those turnovers.&nbsp;

Hutchinson did not lead until 5:58 was left on the clock.&nbsp;

The three-point lead, which got pushed to five moments later, came after the Dragons took six minutes to erase Pratt's largest lead of 12.

Hutchinson then went an icy 0 of 8 as Pratt reclaimed the lead with 3:27 left.&nbsp;

Pratt slowly increased that lead to eight over the next two minutes.&nbsp;

Pratt sealed the game at the line, where the Beavers missed only three times. Pratt came into the contest shooting 68.2% from the line, yet nailed 90% of Monday's attempts.&nbsp;

Hutchinson, who made its first 18 free throw attempts just two nights ago, shot 69%.

Angelo Stuart led the Dragons with 23 points.&nbsp;

Cecil Lee hit three triples and finished with a career-high 19 points. He added seven rebounds.&nbsp;

The Dragons got 15 from Nate Goodlow and 12 from Kaimen Lennox.&nbsp;

Kobe Campbell scored 12 with five rebounds and six assists.&nbsp;

Pratt shot 54.8% from the field compared to Hutchinson's 39.1%.

This game was a makeup game from earlier in the season. The women did not play Monday. Both teams will travel to Garden City Wednesday to close out the regular season.&nbsp;

Iowa State’s Izaiah Brockington and Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji shared Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while Texas Tech’s Bryson Williams earned Newcomer of the Week. Agbaji collected the fifth honor of his career and the fourth of the season. Brockington picked up his fifth honor this season while Williams snagged his second.

Brockington averaged 21.0 points last week while leading the Cyclones to a 2-0 record with wins on the road at TCU and at home against Oklahoma. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists while shooting 53.1 percent from the field and hitting 4-of-6 three-pointers. The senior guard started the week with 20 points and seven rebounds in the win against the Horned Frogs, ISU's first in Fort Worth since 2016. He then scored 22 points on 10-of-13 field goal shooting against the Sooners, including 2-for-2 behind the arc. Six of his 22 points came during a key 15-0 run that broke open the game in the second half. Brockington has scored 20 points in three consecutive games.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Iverson Molinar scored 16 points, Shakeel Moore made a layup with 10. 5 seconds left and Mississippi State beat Missouri 58-56. Garrison Brooks added 11 points and seven rebounds for Mississippi State (16-11, 7-7 SEC). Moore finished with nine points, seven rebounds and two steals. Jarron Coleman answered with a layup and then hit a 3-pointer to give the Tigers a 54-51 advantage with 3:41 remaining but they went 0 for 5 from the field the rest of the way. Javon Pickett had 16 points, Coleman scored 15 and Kobe Brown had 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks for Missouri (10-17, 4-10 SEC).&nbsp;

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — J'Wan Roberts' dunk with 1.3 seconds remaining in double overtime gave No. 14 Houston a stirring 76-74 victory over Wichita State. It was Roberts' only basked of the game and followed Wichita State's Craig Porter hitting a tying 3-point shot with 5.4 seconds remaining in the second overtime. The Cougars took the inbounds and raced up the floor hitting Roberts for the uncontested game-winner. Josh Carlton scored 11 of his 23 points in the two overtimes, finishing 9 of 14 from the floor for Houston (22-4, 11-2 American). Porter and Ricky Council each scored 17 for Wichita State (13-10, 4-7) while Tyson Etienne added 15.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa basketball player Monika Czinano has announced she will return for a fifth season with the Hawkeyes in 2022-23. Czinano is one of the top offensive players in the Big Ten. She is shooting a conference-leading 65% and averaging better than 20 points per game. The 6-foot-3 senior from Watertown, Minnesota, said she wanted to announce her decision to return because people have been asking her about her future. The NCAA did not count 2020-21 as a year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That allows athletes the option to play a fifth year.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Steph Curry put on a 3-point clinic at the NBA All-Star game, but LeBron James had the final word.

Curry made an All-Star Game-record 16 3-pointers and scored 50 points as Team LeBron beat Team Durant, 163-160 at Cleveland. He needed one more 3-pointer to break Anthony Davis' record of 52 points but missed his final attempt. 

The game MVP nailed six treys in the second quarter, but he was just getting started. He added seven in the third period, but the game was tied heading into the final quarter.

LeBron James put his team at the 163-point threshold by hitting a jumper that left him 5-0 since the leading vote-getters began to choose sides for the All-Star Game.

Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH;'-nihs an-the-toh-KOON'-poh) had 30 points and James finished with 24 in his old home. Joel Embiid (joh-EHL' ehm-BEED') led Team Durant with 36 points. 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Roger Penske received quite an 85th birthday from his rookie driver.

Austin Cindric (SIHN'-drihk) drove his brand new NASCAR ride to victory in the Daytona 500. Cindric was the leader on the restart from the top lane and pulled out to a sizeable gap. He then ducked down to the bottom line in front of his Team Penske teammate Ryan Blaney so that Blaney and Cindric could work together over the final two-lap sprint to the finish. 

A crash behind them brought out the caution and Cindric was ruled the leader and the winner. It's the first career Cup victory for the 23-year-old Cindric, who was promoted from the Xfinity Series to replace Brad Keselowski in the No. 2 Ford and run for NASCAR's rookie of the year honors. 

Bubba Wallace finished second in the season-opening race for the second time in his career. He was followed by a trio of Ford drivers in Chase Briscoe, Blaney and Aric Almirola. 

Chase Elliott signs 5-year extension before Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Chase Elliott has skipped the free agency process and agreed to a five-year contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports. The announcement Sunday came hours before the season-opening Daytona 500.

This season was the final year in Elliott's current contract. Elliott is the 2020 Cup champion and four-time reigning winner of the fan-voted most popular driver award. He will drive the No. 9 Chevrolet through 2027 with the new extension. 

No. 8 Providence rallies from 19 down, beats Butler in OT

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten Conference says it plans to take swift action following a skirmish between Michigan head coach Juwan Howard and a pair of Wisconsin coaches following the 15th-ranked Badgers' 77-63 victory.

Howard hit Wisconsin assistant Joe Krabbenhoft after arguing with Badgers coach Greg Gard during the handshake line. Howard said after the game that he didn't appreciate Gard calling a timeout with 15 seconds remaining and Wisconsin up by 15.

Howard said he reacted after someone from Wisconsin put hands on him. Video showed Gard had his hands touching Howard's arm or wrist area while trying to explain the reason for the timeout.

The Big Ten issued a statement saying it's "aware of a physical altercation involving Michigan head coach Juwan Howard" and that it's assessing the incident. Howard said he'd respect whatever decision the Big Ten makes.

Lost in the postgame fracas was the work of Johnny Davis, who pumped in 25 points to help the Badgers improve to 21-5.

— Jaden Ivey hit 15 of 18 from the line and finished with 25 points as fifth-ranked Purdue knocked off Rutgers, 84-72. Zach Edey (EE'-dee) had 15 points for the Boilermakers, who led by just one before going on a 20-1 run bridging the two halves. Purdue shot 53% and had a 19-4 edge in points off turnovers. 

— Eighth-ranked Providence stormed back from 19 points down to beat Butler, 71-70 in overtime. Jared Bynum hit two free throws with 38 seconds left in OT to help the Friars stay atop the Big East at 12-2. Nate Watson finished with 22 points and Noah Horchler added 15 with 11 rebounds.

Hurricanes edge Pens 4-3 to take lead in tight Metropolitan

UNDATED (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes top the NHL's Metropolitan Division following a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Third-period goals by Jesper Fast (fahst) and Sebastian Aho (AH'-hoh) allowed the Canes to move two points ahead of the Penguins. Fast scored the go-ahead goal nine seconds into the third period and Aho provided the eventual game-winner.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi (yehs-PEHR'-ee klaht-kan-YEH'-mee) and Jordan Staal also scored in the Hurricanes' first meeting with the Pens this season.

Pittsburgh's Bryan Rust scored for the eighth time in as many games. Sidney Crosby notched his 501st career goal and Evan Rodriguez tallied with 1:12 remaining.

— The Panthers have completed a 4-1 road trip with a 5-2 downing of the Blackhawks. Aleksander Barkov had a goal and two assists in Florida's third straight win and seventh in eight games. Jonathan Huberdeau (HOO'-bur-doh) set up two goals to increase his league-leading assist total to 53 and extend his points streak to seven games.

— Igor Shesterkin (shehs-TUR'-kihn) made 29 saves and almost scored into an empty net before the Rangers completed a 2-1 win over the Senators. Shesterkin blanked Ottawa after Tim Stutzle (STOOTS'-luh) beat him about four minutes into the game. Ryan Strome (strohm) tied it with a goal off a rebound and Artemi Panarin (ahr-TEH'-mee pah-NAH'-rihn) put the Rangers ahead in the second period.

— Kevin Fiala (fee-AH'-lah) had two goals and an assist as the Wild ended the Oilers' five-game winning streak, 7-3. Brandon Duhaime (doo-HAYM'), Joel Eriksson Ek, Connor Dewar, Matt Boldy and Mats Zuccarello (zoo-kah-REH'-loh) also scored to help the Wild snap a two-game losing skid. Kaapo Kahkonen had 30 saves.

— The Golden Knights were 4-1 winners at San Jose as Jack Eichel (EYE'-kul) scored his first goal since joining Vegas. Eichel's goal came in his third game back from artificial disk replacement surgery on his neck in November. Knights netminder Logan Thompson stopped 35 shots in his second career start.

— Dean Kukan had two goals and an assist to support Jean-Francois Berube as the Blue Jackets hammered the Sabres, 7-3. Berube stopped 33 shots in his first NHL start in nearly four years. Boone Jenner had a goal and an assist in the Jackets' seventh win in nine games.

— The Coyotes stopped Dallas' six-game road winning streak with a 3-1 victory over the Stars. Nick Schmaltz and Clayton Keller each had a goal and an assist in support of Scott Wedgewood, who made 32 saves. Schmaltz scored on a power play to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead late in the second period. 

— Andrew Hammond made 30 saves and stopped two of three shootout attempts, leading the Canadiens to a 3-2 win against the Islanders. It was Hammond's first regular-season start since March 2018, and first NHL regular-season win since April 2016. Cole Caufield and Rem Pitlick scored in the shootout and Montreal won its second straight since a 10-game losing streak.

Djokovic says he's at his 'peak' returning to tour in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Novak Djokovic says that despite weeks away from competition and emotional distress over his recent detention and deportation, he feels he's at his "peak" as he returns to tour. 

The world's top male tennis player sounded an upbeat note in a press conference Sunday before the start of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis championship. It's his first tournament since being ejected from Australia and missing the year's first Grand Slam event over his vaccination status. Djokovic's presence brings an unusual amount of scrutiny to the annual tournament near Dubai International Airport. 

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Joaquinn Niemann survived a few nervous moments at Riviera and polished off a big week when he closed with an even-par 71 to become the first wire-to-wire winner of the Genesis Invitational in 53 years.

Staked to a three-shot lead, Niemann's margin was down to one when he made a 7-foot birdie on the eighth hole and PGA Tour rookie Cameron Young sailed the green and made bogey.

With two bogeys on the back nine, Niemann finished at 19-under 265, one short of the tournament-record score Lanny Watkins had in 1985.

(AP) — Roger Penske received quite an 85th birthday from his rookie driver.Austin Cindric (SIHN'-drihk) drove his brand new NASCAR ride to victory in the Daytona 500. Cindric was the leader on the restart from the top lane and pulled out to a sizeable gap. He then ducked down to the bottom line in front of his Team Penske teammate Ryan Blaney so that Blaney and Cindric could work together over the final two-lap sprint to the finish. A crash behind them brought out the caution and Cindric was ruled the leader and the winner. It's the first career Cup victory for the 23-year-old Cindric, who was promoted from the Xfinity Series to replace Brad Keselowski in the No. 2 Ford and run for NASCAR's rookie of the year honors. Bubba Wallace finished second in the season-opening race for the second time in his career. He was followed by a trio of Ford drivers in Chase Briscoe, Blaney and Aric Almirola.
