The school announced the decision Sunday, a day after a 43-20 loss at Arizona. It’s only the fourth 0-5 start in the program's history. Dorrell, 58, was brought in as a replacement when Mel Tucker bolted for Michigan State out of the blue in February 2020. He made our young men better off the field, both in the classroom and in the community. He led our program to the highest GPA in our history, and his team was involved in a lot of different community activities.

“Karl’s a good man, I have a ton of respect for him and I wish him nothing (but the) best in his future endeavors.

“However, the on-the-field performance fell well short of our expectations,” George added. “I know that starts with me. I hired Karl and it didn’t work out the way any of us wanted it to. There’s no excuses and I own my part in where we are today.”

Dorrell, 58, was brought in as a replacement when Mel Tucker bolted for Michigan State out of the blue in February 2020.

The hiring of Dorrell was met with surprise because he had been out of college coaching for a while. He was an assistant with the Miami Dolphins at the time, but he had been UCLA's head coach from 2003-07.

Dorrell,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/94ffd2a4725a65a357213e9a1fd88637">who had built a house in the Boulder area</a>, agreed to a five-year, $18 million contract that ran through 2024. The buyout, which will come out of the athletic department's budget, is approximately $8.7 million, but could be reduced pending his next job.

Although the Buffaloes have had just two winning seasons since 2006 — and one of them was their 4-2 record during the pandemic in 2020 — George said he trusts Colorado can return to prominence.

“We will do what is needed to get a winning football team back on this field,” George said. “... This place can be and will be a football powerhouse. We have the facilities. We have the location. We have the programs. We have everything that we need to be successful on the football field.”

George also issued a call for local businesses to step up and make CU more competitive when it comes to NIL opportunities for the Buffs.

Colorado waited to announce the news until after Dorrell had a chance to inform his staff and players in a meeting. Defensive coordinator Chris Wilson was also let go.

Offensive coordinator Mike Sanford will serve as interim coach. Defensive line coach Gerald Chatman will serve as the team’s defensive coordinator, while passing game coordinator/tight ends coach Clay Patterson takes over as offensive coordinator.

The Buffaloes are idle this week before hosting California. They have seven games left and Sanford said the goal is to get an eighth game — a bowl berth.

“We have not been eliminated from any postseason to this point and it all starts with having a fantastic bye week,” Sanford said. “... These players haven't quit. They have shown nothing but fight.

Dorrell didn’t have much of an offseason program due to coronavirus restrictions his inaugural season, but he led the Buffaloes to a 4-2 mark — they started 4-0 — and an appearance in the Alamo Bowl. Dorrell was named Pac-12 coach of the year.

Colorado went 4-8 last season and saw several key starters leave through the transfer portal. This season, Colorado has rotated through three quarterbacks in trying to ignite an offense that ranks near the bottom of the FBS ranks. The Buffaloes and rival Colorado State, which has a new coach in Jay Norvell, are the only two teams left in the FBS without a win.

The loss to Arizona became the final blow for Dorrell, whose team has been outscored by a 216-67 margin. The Wildcats were a team predicted to finish 11th in the Pac-12 preseason media poll, with Colorado last. The Buffaloes' defense surrendered 673 total yards Saturday — the most since allowing 616 to Arizona in 2015.

Dorrell weathered some rocky moments over his time in Boulder. A year ago, he apologized a day after losing his cool and pushing a photojournalist’s camera on his way off the field following a 37-14 loss to Southern California.

He also came under fire last season for skipping his customary postgame radio show after a 30-0 loss to the Gophers. In addition, Dorrell drew scrutiny when he didn't make his players available after a 55-23 loss to Texas in the Alamo Bowl.

Since joining the Pac-12 in 2011, the Buffaloes have turned to coaches such as Jon Embree, Mike MacIntyre, Tucker and Dorrell to try to turn the Buffaloes around. MacIntyre led the Buffaloes to the conference championship game in 2016, but it was his only winning season out of six.

Tucker seemed to have the Buffaloes on the right path, bringing in several top prospects, before leaving for Michigan State after one season. That opened the door for Dorrell, who served as a receivers coach and later as offensive coordinator for Colorado in the 1990s.

A national search for a coach is expected to start soon.

ATLANTA (AP) — Dansby Swanson and Matt Olson homered for the third straight game, Travis d'Arnaud hit a go-ahead two-run single in the third inning, and Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 5-3, completing a three-game sweep of their NL East rival and taking a two-game lead in the division with three games to play. The Braves have been chasing the Mets the entire season. In the final series of the season, any combination of one Atlanta win or one Mets loss would give the Braves their fifth straight division title. New York plays its final three games of the season against worst-in-the-majors Washington. Atlanta closes out the regular season with a three-game set in Miami. Atlanta also claimed a tiebreaker over the Mets, winning their season series 10-9.

This was reset week for Associated Press college football poll voters. A season-high 10 teams that entered the weekend ranked in the AP Top 25 lost. That included five ranked teams losing to unranked opponents. The fallout was more than a quarter of the poll turning over Sunday. The voters tossed out seven teams, five of which had been ranked all season, including Oklahoma, Texas A&amp;M and Baylor. Among the seven new arrivals, six made their season debut. Kansas was the headliner. The Jayhawks had not been ranked in 13 years, the longest drought among Power Five conference teams.

The Bucs sacked Mahomes three times and intercepted him once, but it was not the "coming out party" linebacker Shaquil Barrett had predicted his team having against an offensive line the Chiefs have overhauled since struggling against Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl loss.

With Hurricane Ian approaching the Florida's Gulf Coast, the Bucs evacuated for four days to the Miami area, where they practiced Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the Dolphins' training facility while the NFL made contingency plans to move the game to Minneapolis if it couldn't be played in Tampa.

The Glazer family that owns the Bucs has announced it is donating $1 million for hurricane relief. The NFL Foundation is matching that donation, and the Bucs on Sunday night began a "Florida Strong" campaign to raise funds, as well as honor emergency personnel and first responders.

Players and fans observed a "moment of support" prior the national anthem, and the Bucs also paid tribute to those affected by the hurricane in a video presentation displayed on giant scoreboard screens before the game.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker (ankle) was inactive for the third straight game. ... CLEVELAND (AP) — Shane Bieber allowed two runs over five innings in his final start before the postseason, Josh Naylor and rookie Will Brennan hit three-run homers and the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-5 on Sunday.

Bieber (13-8) is scheduled to start Game 1 of the wild-card series Friday for the AL Central champions. Cleveland has won 11 of 13 and is an MLB-best 22-5 since Sept. 5.

The right-hander gave up both runs — one unearned —in the fourth and scattered seven hits, struck out three, walked one. Bieber finished the regular season with 198 strikeouts in 200 innings.

Naylor and Brennan homered off Max Castillo (0-2) in Cleveland’s six-run second.

Naylor played first base and batted cleanup, one spot ahead of his brother Bo, who was the designated hitter. Bo Naylor, called up from the minors Saturday, struck out in all four at-bats.

Josh Naylor’s home run gave Cleveland a 7-0 lead. Brennan, another rookie, hit his first major-league homer earlier in the inning. He also tripled and scored to leadoff the game.

Kansas City cut the score to 7-5 in the eighth, but Trevor Stephan retired Edward Olivares with two on to end the inning. Emmanuel Clase pitched the ninth for his major-league leading 41st save.

Amed Rosario had a sacrifice fly in the first before Cleveland sent nine men to the plate in the second and scored six times with two outs.

Brennan is batting .355 in nine games since being called up from Triple-A Columbus on Sept. 21.

José Ramirez stole his 20th base of the season in the seventh, the fourth time in his career he has hit 20 home runs and stolen 20 bases in a season.

Castillo allowed seven runs in five innings. MJ Melendez and Vinnie Pasquantino each had three hits for the Royals.

Royals catcher Salvador Perez wasn’t in the lineup after feeling soreness in his left thumb during Saturday’s game.

Perez tore the ulnar collateral ligament in the thumb in June, had surgery and returned in late July. Perez homered in the seventh inning Saturday and was removed from the game following the at-bat because of discomfort in the thumb.

Manager Mike Matheny said tests showed the area where the surgery was performed wasn’t affected and Perez is day-to-day over the final three games of the season.

“We’re fortunate everything looked good where the repair was,” Matheny said. “That didn’t seem to be an issue. It’s just sore.”

The game-time temperature was 58 degrees, which felt much lower to fans thanks to a 22 mph wind blowing in from center field.

Alabama reclaimed No. 1 from Georgia in The Associated Press college football poll in one of the closest votes in the recent years, and six teams — including Kansas — made their season debut on Sunday.

The Crimson Tide received 25 first-place votes and 1,523 points in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank</a>, two points more than the Bulldogs. Georgia received 28 first-place votes to become the first team since Alabama in November 2019 to have the most first-place votes but not be No. 1.

The Tide was No. 2 behind LSU that year, with 21 first-place votes to the Tigers' 17.

The last time there was a two-point margin between Nos. 1 and 2 was Nov. 1, 2020, when Clemson was ahead of Alabama. There have been three other polls with a two-point margin at the top since 2007.

Ohio State remained third, but the Buckeyes also gained some ground on the top two, getting 10 first-place votes.

The Crimson Tide&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">started the season</a>&nbsp;at No. 1, but the defending national champion Bulldogs took the top spot away from their Southeastern Conference rivals after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">Week 2</a>&nbsp;when Alabama needed a late field goal to beat Texas.

Young sprained his throwing shoulder in the first half and missed most of the game in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

No. 4 Michigan, No. 5 Clemson and No. 6 Southern California all won and held their places this week, though the Wolverines and Tigers are now separated by just three points.

No. 7 Oklahoma State, followed by Tennessee, Mississippi and Penn State, round out the top 10.

The rest of the AP Top 25 got a major overhaul after 10 ranked teams lost, five to unranked opponents. That cleared the way for seven teams to move into the rankings this week, most notably No. 19 Kansas.

The Jayhawks are ranked for the first time since Oct. 18, 2009, which was the longest drought for a team currently in a Power Five conference.

The closest margin between Nos. 1 and 2 in AP poll history is zero. Oklahoma and Miami tied for No. 1 in the 2002 preseason poll, and Miami and Washington shared the top spot in mid-October 1992.

The last time there was a one-point margin between the top two teams was 1992, when the Hurricanes and Huskies were separated by a point in the weeks before and after they were tied.

With Kansas back in the rankings, the longest poll appearance drought belongs to Illinois, which was last ranked in 2011. And the Illini have positioned themselves to make the leap with a 4-1 start heading into their home game against Iowa next week.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Salvador Perez had four hits and drove in a pair of runs, Kris Bubic struck out a season-high eight and the Kansas City Royals beat the AL Central champion Cleveland Guardians 7-1 on Saturday night.

Perez collected three singles and a solo homer in four plate appearances, spoiling the return of Cleveland right-hander Zach Plesac (3-12) following a one-month stay on the injured list with a broken pitching hand.

The Guardians will host either Toronto, Seattle or Tampa Bay in a best-of-three wild-card series next weekend. Cleveland has won 10 of 12 and is an MLB-best 21-5 since Sept. 5.

The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team got into an early hole against the sixth-ranked team in the country on Saturday.

The No. 6-ranked Butler Grizzlies scored three early goals to put the Blue Dragons in a big, early hole. The Blue Dragons could not dig themselves out of. The No. 17-ranked Blue Dragons dropped a 3-0 Jayhawk Conference decision to Butler at BG Products/Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Blue Dragons fell to 10-2 overall and 7-2 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons are 2-1 in their last three matchups, which have all been against NJCAA-ranked opponents. Hutchinson plays a fourth-straight ranked opponent on Wednesday when the 12th-ranked Barton Cougars travel to Hutchinson for potentially another top 20 battle at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

Saturday’s loss was the first time this season the Blue Dragons were shut out, a first since the Region VI quarterfinal to Coffeyville last season.

Butler’s Brooke Sullivan scored twice, including the game-winner, in the first 22 minutes and Emma Kolbe added another to boost the Grizzlies lead in the first half.

Hutchinson was outshot 23-14, including 12 shots on goal by Butler to Hutchinson’s four – two by sophomores Julia Dias De Souza and Hadlie Lowe.

Blue Dragons goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona was handed her second loss of the season. The sophomore had nine saves Saturday.

HutchCC Soccer: Dragons fall to No. 6 Butler

The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team made its bid to return to the NJCAA national rankings with a decisive Jayhawk West sweep of No. 12 Seward County on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Sophomores Baylee Miller and Blondie Penaflor paced a decisive Blue Dragon attack that hit .384 as Hutchinson defeated the Saints 25-19, 25-14, 25-19.

The Blue Dragons are now 21-8 and 8-1 in the Jayhawk West. The Dragons, Saints and Butler all have one league loss. The Saints fall to 18-5 and 8-1 in the league. The Blue Dragons went 3-0 this past week with victories over Barton, Dodge City and Seward County.

The Blue Dragons earned their fifth victory over a nationally ranked team this season.

Miller hit a career-high .516 with 17 kills on 31 swings with one error to pace the Blue Dragons. Miller had a stretch where she had a kill on set point to close the opening set and then had kills on Hutchinson’s first five points of the second set. Miller had eight kills and two blocks in the second set.

Penaflor hit a career-high .727 with eight kills on 11 attacks. Penaflor added nine total blocks (1 solo, 8 assists) to lead a strong Blue Dragon block.

Freshman Taniya Golden had seven kills. Freshman Anna Dean had four kills.

Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano had 21 assists with three service aces and six digs. Freshman setter Giovanna Ravenhani had 12 assists and three kills.

Freshman Perrine Blanc had 18 kills. Sophomore Sophie Connor had 16 kills.

Set 1: The Dragons took advantage of a couple of Saint attack errors and a Connor ace gave the Dragons an early 5-2 lead and force a Seward timeout. A Dean kill gave the Dragons a 9-5 lead and a Serrano ace gave Hutchinson a 12-6 lead. The Dragons built a set-high nine-point lead after a Miller kill made it 16-7. The Saints got back within 20-16 with a 5-2 run, but a Ravenhani setter dump for a kill, another Serrano aces and a solo Penaflor block upped the Dragon margin to 23-15.

Set 2: Miller’s torrid start to the second set was six kills in the first seven points and the Dragons got out to a 7-3 lead. The Saints pulled within 10-8, but the Dragons reeled off seven-straight points. Miller had a kill and two blocks as Hutchinson built a 17-8 lead. Dean’s ace capped a 3-0 Hutchinson run for a 24-12 lead. Penaflor had the kill on set point for a 25-14 victory and a 2-0 match lead.

Set 3: Three-straight Saint aces capped a 5-0 run as Seward County built an early 6-4 lead. Hutchinson went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-7 lead after a Golden kill. The Saints answered with a 4-1 run and Seward eventually took a 15-13 lead. Hutchinson answered with a 4-0 run to take the lead back. Then tied at 17-all, a Saint service error and a Dean kill gave the Dragons the lead for good. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/1de59651-f506-4f43-9977-81c765d5b760">One week ago at Coffeyville, running back Dylan Kedzior was called upon in the fourth quarter to score the game's go-ahead touchdown</a>. That performance led to him being named RB1 against No. 9 Butler.

"He's been the man the last two weeks," head coach Drew Dallas said after the game. Kedzior ran for 230 yards against the Grizzlies and scored four touchdowns.

His first score came on the ground early in the second quarter. Kedzior broke free on a 23-yard scamper. The extra point was blocked by Caylen Lowery, keeping the score locked at 6-6.

The Grizzlies opened up the scoring with two Carson Arndt field goals. The Wichita native hit from 40 and 46 in the first quarter to put Butler up six early.

"Our defense had that bend-but-don't-break mentality early," Dallas said of his defense giving up only field goals.

Arndt attempted five kicks on the evening, connecting on four. His only miss came from 46 yards in the fourth quarter. Arndt was good from 40, 46, 32 and 22.

His 22-yard field goal with 7:33 to play kept the game a one-possession contest at 27-19. Hutchinson held Butler to 4th-and-goal at the 5-yard line before the attempt.

Hutchinson took a 20-16 lead into the locker room after three Kedzior touchdowns. Two were on the ground (from 23 and 17 yards out) and one was on a sensational grab in the corner of the end zone from 4 yards away just before halftime.

"When we got him, he was a wide receiver," Dallas said of his star running back.

The catch in the end zone was challenged by Butler, but officials confirmed the call on the field.

Before that grab, Butler had a 16-13 advantage after the two field goals and a Jaisean McMillian 3-yard score. The run capped a 6-play, 75-yard drive and would be the only TD of the night for No. 9 Butler (3-2, 3-1).

"The defense stepped up in a big way in the second half," Dallas said of his team's physical play that dominated the last 30 minutes.

Butler managed just one field goal in the second half.

No. 2 Hutchinson (5-0, 2-0) took a 27-16 lead with 5:09 left in the third quarter on a Kedzior 7-yard run. The score capped a 12-play, 91-yard drive that wiped 6:43 off the clock.

Hutchinson looked ready to ice the game with a 25-yard field goal with 1:17 remaining. However, Butler's Caleb Brown blocked the Cole Segraves attempt. Segraves went 0-for-2 (38 and 25 yards). His 38-yard attempt went just left. He hit 3 of 4 extra-point attempts, the one miss was blocked.

Hutchinson's defense intercepted a Jake Wolff pass after it was deflected to seal the contest with 44 seconds left. One problem, the Dragons were called for an illegal substitution.

The defense closed the door once again, however, when Walter Bob Jr. stripped Wolff of the ball and Rodney Green Jr. fell on it with 23 seconds remaining.

Dylan Kedzior finished with 230 yards on 28 carries (8.2 yards per carry). He had four touchdowns (three on the ground, one through the air).

The other Dylan, quarterback Dylan Laible, completed 17 passes for 224 yards and the one TD to Kedzior.

Micah Woods caught four passes for 107 yards.

The Dragon defense held Jake Wolff to 23 of 41 passing. He finished with 271 yards. Jeremiah Payton led the Butler rushing attack with 92 yards.

Butler had 423 yards of total offense, but managed just one touchdown.

The Dragons were 55% on third down (6 of 11) and held Butler to 29% (4 of 14). Hutchinson sacked Wolff three times. Terry Kirksey led the defense with 10 tackles, Nikko Taylor had two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.

Hutchinson travels to Dodge City (2-3, 1-2) next Saturday, Oct. 8, for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

🏈 FB: No. 2 Dragons, No. 9 Grizzlies fight to finish

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jace Gilbert missed three field goals, including a 37-yarder with a chance to tie the game with under 30 seconds to play as Kansas held off Iowa State 14-11 on Saturday to remain undefeated.

At 5-0 overall, this is the Jayhawks' best start to the season since 2009 and just the second time in the last 14 years they’re 2-0 to begin Big 12 Conference play.

Jalon Daniels and Daniel Hishaw both scored rushing touchdowns for the Jayhawks, who were shut out in the second half, but did just enough to hang on for the victory.

Daniels threw for 93 yards while Iowa State's Hunter Dekkers had 278 passing yards but threw a costly interception in the second quarter.

Dekkers' interception in the second quarter ended up turning into a touchdown for the Jayhawks, a 2-yard run by Daniels for a 14-0 lead.

Iowa State got on the board just before halftime with Dekkers' 7-yard pass to Easton Dean. A two-point conversion after a botched PAT snap drew the Cyclones within 14-8.

Gilbert came into the game 5-for-5 on field goals for the Cyclones but missed two kicks off the post — one in the first quarter and another in the fourth — which proved costly.

Iowa State: The Cyclones looked a bit out of sorts all day and probably could’ve won this game against lesser Kansas teams. It’s the first time the Cyclones have lost to Kansas since 2014.

Kansas: They did just enough to win this game and showed they can win a defensive battle after shootouts in their first four games of the season.

Kansas faces TCU at home on Saturday. Iowa State hosts Kansas State the same day.
