NFL's concussion protocol modified after Tagovailoa review

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed to make changes to the league's concussion protocol following a joint investigation into the procedures after Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered what was described as a back injury against the Buffalo Bills last month. The league and players' union said in a joint statement Saturday that the Dolphins followed the league's protocol after the injury, but the outcome of the Tagovailoa case "was not what was intended when the Protocol was drafted." As a result, language addressing abnormality of balance/stability was added to the league's protocol.

Green absence from Warriors 'mutual decision' after punch

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Draymond Green will be away from the defending champion Golden State Warriors indefinitely. Coach Steve Kerr says its a "mutual decision" after the star forward violently punched teammate Jordan Poole in the face Wednesday. Green had been scheduled to rejoin the team for practice Saturday. He said he expects to play in Golden State's season-opener on Oct. 18, but he is unsure of his status as well as how long he will be away.

DENVER (AP) — A person with knowledge of the procedure confirms to The Associated Press that Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson flew to Los Angeles on Friday to get an injection for his ailing throwing shoulder. The NFL Network first reported the news Saturday. Wilson landed on the injury report last week and coach Nathaniel Hackett said he had gotten "dinged up" in the Broncos' loss at Las Vegas. Wilson played poorly in the Broncos' 12-9 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night. Afterward he mentioned "battling" shoulder discomfort but didn't blame the injury for his performance.

Cantlay misses out on 59 and shares Vegas lead with Tom Kim

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Patrick Cantlay was on the verge of a 59 in Las Vegas. He missed his 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole and had to settle for a 60. That gives a share of the lead with 20-year-old Tom Kim going into the final, wild day of the Shriners Children's Open. Kim had five birdies over his last six holes and shot 62. That's what kind of day it was in Las Vegas. There were nine scores of 64 or better. Cantlay and Kim are three shots ahead of everyone else. Both realize anything goes in Las Vegas.

Sanders, No. 7 Oklahoma State get past Texas Tech, 41-31

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Spencer Sanders ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and No. 7 Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech 41-31 on Saturday. Sanders passed for 297 yards and ran for 56, and Bryson Green had five catches for a career-high 115 yards for the Cowboys. The University of Kansas announced plans Friday for long-awaited renovations to Memorial Stadium, the Anderson Family Football Complex and other facilities along with potential conference, entertainment and retail spaces.

The school has long studied ways to renovate the aging stadium, one of the oldest football venues in major college football, but support has been tepid as the Jayhawks struggled through year after year of losing seasons. The few upgrades that have taken place have been largely cosmetic, leaving the old concrete bowl almost entirely untouched.

But buoyed by a 5-0 start to the season, which has energized fans of the No. 19 Jayhawks, the school decided it was time to make public the behind-the-scenes discussions that have been taking place for the last several months.

"This project is unmatched in its vision to benefit a broad range of KU constituents while signaling a new era for Kansas football,” Jayhawks athletic director Travis Goff said. “Once complete, this project will ensure our football program has the facilities it needs to compete at the highest level and provide the best possible game-day experience for student-athletes and fans. Moreover, we are thrilled this project goes beyond football to benefit the entire university and the region.”

The Jayhawks face No. 17 TCU on Saturday in a showdown of unbeatens. It is the third consecutive sellout for the school, and ESPN has brought its popular “College Gameday” program to campus for the first time.

The project comes during a transformative era in college sports, where the appeal of schools amid conference realignment — even at Kansas, the defending men's basketball national champion — has been dictated almost entirely by football.

Kansas has chosen HNTB as the lead architect for its project. It will begin early next year with renovations to the football complex that are designed to improve the student-athlete experience, along with appealing to potential recruits, and include groundwork for the bigger renovation to the stadium.

The project, which is expected to cost more than $300 million, will be funded primarily through private donations, economic development funds, premium seating sales and future development opportunities on site.

“The intersection near 11th and Mississippi streets is a primary campus entrance for prospective students, alumni and guests,” Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod said. “For these reasons, it’s the ideal location to develop a new gateway with multi-use facilities to better serve these audiences, generate revenue for academic programming, drive economic growth in the region, and reimagine our football facilities.”

The renovations to Memorial Stadium are likely to attract the most attention. The school is promising improved sight lines and seating experiences in the lower bowl, where fans are currently far from the field because of the existence of the since-removed athletics track, along with improved concourses, premium seating and other amenities.

Exact renderings of the stadium will be revealed later, once the school and partner Elevate Sports Ventures conduct fan focus groups and solicit other feedback from influential donors on what they envision in a football facility.

“Now more than ever, college athletics – and certainly sustained success in the sport of football – are critical to the health and vibrancy of our entire university community,” Goff said. “There is tremendous excitement for this project among donors and partners who believe in KU’s mission, and in partnership with KU Endowment, we’ll be reaching out in earnest to our benefactors and supporters to ensure this ambitious vision becomes reality.”

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders defense has allowed 13 touchdowns this season, seven coming through the air.

And five of them were thrown by AFC West rivals Justin Herbert of the Chargers and Denver's Russell Wilson.

Monday night the Raiders (1-3) face the division’s best quarterback in Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, who will provide their secondary its stiffest test of the season.

"He’s at such an elite status in terms of his ability to perform under pressure, make plays within the system,” Las Vegas defensive coordinator Patrick Graham said. “It’s a difficult challenge and I think our preparation for each week, we try to attack it brand new whoever the opponent is and try to see what they do best, how can we take it away, who are they going to in certain situations?”

With the Chiefs (3-1) and Mahomes, the Raiders are presented with numerous issues that are sure to challenge a secondary that has the slimmest margin for errors.

Mahomes, who ranks seventh in the league with 1,106 yards passing, is tied for first with 11 passing touchdowns, alongside Detroit’s Jared Goff and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson. He has 2,546 yards passing in eight career games against the Raider, more than he's accumulated against any other opponent.

“He’s getting comfortable, he’s getting older, he’s getting wiser,” veteran safety Duron Harmon said about Mahomes. “He knows where he wants to go with the football. He’s doing a good job of getting the ball out quick. Even when it’s dropped back, he just knows where he wants to go with the ball. This is a young quarterback who has continued to grow year after year, game after game.”

And considering that growth, Mahomes knows the area of Las Vegas’ secondary he can attack.

For instance, per Pro Football Focus, safety Johnathan Abram has allowed three touchdowns in coverage in four games for the Raiders against the Chiefs. Overall, Abram has allowed 19 receptions on 20 targets for 237 yards along with the three scores versus the Chiefs.

To his credit, though, Abram leads the secondary and ranks second on the team with 29 tackles combined.

Cornerbacks Nate Hobbs and Amik Robertson will patrol the outside and are coming in after productive performances against Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos.

“I think we're very confident, we just got to fix some small things that we know we’re capable of fixing,” Robertson said. “Because a guy like Mahomes, you make a few mistakes, you might regret it at the end of the game. He’s one of the best quarterbacks in this league.”

And as its secondary has improved progressively each week, the Chiefs know better than to take desperate, one-win Las Vegas lightly.

“It’s kind of the same old secondary, honestly,” Kansas City receiver Mecole Hardman said. “I think they are led by 2-4 (Abram). (They’re) a group of guys that are going to get after the ball (and) that’s going to challenge you every single play. So, it’s just got to be something that we got to be ready for. We’ve got to get ready (and) we’ve got to get in on the run game. Get ready to block them guys and just make plays whenever we’ve got the chance to. They’re definitely a good group of guys and we’re going to look forward to playing them.”

Despite a 7-1 mark against the Raiders, Mahomes is anticipating a tight battle.

“It’s going to be ... both teams trying to play their best football,” Mahomes said. “It’s a true rivalry, we know that it doesn’t matter what the records are, you’re going to go out there and play. It’s going to be a dog fight. And they have a great football team, their record – they don’t have the best record - but every game, they’ve been in the game or been leading the game at certain points.”

Kansas’ third-consecutive sellout of 47,233 saw Kansas fall (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) for the first time this season, while TCU improved to 5-0 (2-0 Big 12). ESPN’s College GameDay set the scene, making its first football trip to Lawrence early Saturday morning.&nbsp;

Kansas outgained TCU 540-452 for the game, highlighted by redshirt-senior quarterback Jason Bean throwing for a career-high four touchdowns and 262 yards. Bean finished 16-for-24 through the air, which all of his attempts coming in the second half. Bean threw two touchdowns to redshirt-sophomore Quentin Skinner and one each to senior Mason Fairchild and junior Luke Grimm.&nbsp;

After scoring a combined 13 points in the first half, the two teams posted 28 points each in the second half. In the second half there were four ties and four lead changes, with TCU’s Max Duggan hitting Quentin Johnston for a 24-yard touchdown pass with 1:36 remaining being the game-winning score.&nbsp;

Skinner ended the game with a career-high 98 yards receiving and his two touchdown receptions were also a career best. Grimm caught a team-high six passes for 73 yards. He has 15 catches in his last three games and 25 for the season. Sophomore running back Devin Neal led KU with 88 yards rushing on 15 carries.&nbsp;

Down 10-3 at halftime, Kansas tied the game at 10-10 on the opening drive of the second half when Bean connected with Fairchild for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Highlighting the four-play, 75-yard scoring drive was a 52-yard pass play from Bean to redshirt-freshman Tanaka Scott, where Scott shook a TCU tackler and raced down the left side line.&nbsp;

Kansas senior Kenny Logan Jr. forced a fumble and recovered it on TCU’s next drive at the TCU 40-yard line. Five plays later Bean connected to Grimm on an eight-yard touchdown pass to give the home team a 17-10 lead with 7:36 remaining in the third quarter.&nbsp;

TCU tied the game at 17-17 on the next drive and then took advantage of an interception making it 24-17 on a five-play, 26-yard drive with 3:59 remaining in the third quarter.&nbsp;

Kansas answered TCU’s 14-point run with a four-play, 72-yard drive to knot the game at 24-24 when Bean hit Skinner on a 38-yard touchdown pass. It was Skinner’s second touchdown of the season.&nbsp;

TCU broke the tie with a 50-yard touchdown drive to make it 31-24 just before the end of the third quarter.&nbsp;

Kansas tied the game for the fourth time in the second half, at 31-31, with a four-play 61-yard drive culminating with a 29-yard Bean to Skinner touchdown pass with 4:21 remaining.&nbsp;

TCU scored the game winner with 1:36 remaining and Kansas would drive to the TCU 34-yard line before turning it over on downs ending KU’s chances.&nbsp;

In the second quarter, Kansas drove down to the TCU one-yard line after mounting its best drive of the first half. The drive went for 80 yards and was highlighted by a 48-yard reception from junior Jalon Daniels to senior Manson Fairchild and a 21-yard rush by Neal. 🏈 No. 17 TCU edges No. 19 Kansas in Second-Half Shootout

DODGE CITY, Kan. — No. 2 Hutchinson (6-0, 3-0) was on Dylan Watch Saturday afternoon against the Conquistadors (2-4, 1-3).

Quarterback Dylan Laible needed just three passing yards to surpass Luke Barnes as Hutchinson's all-time leader.&nbsp;

Running back Dylan Kedzior came into the game as the back-to-back Conference Player of the Week after five quarters of star-studded play that featured a game-winning TD at Coffeyville and a four-touchdown performance against then-No. 9 Butler.&nbsp;

Both Dylans delivered on the first drive. Laible hit Treymon Echols on a short route that etched his name into another portion of the Dragon record book. Laible already took the all-time TD passing record from Barnes with his 51st passing TD earlier this season. He took the all-time yards record (2,706) away with 217 yards on 14 completions for two touchdowns (now 4,921 yards all time).&nbsp;

Dylan Kedzior continued his dominance on the first drive with a 20-yard scamper to the 4. He finished the 11-play, 76-yard drive with a one-yard run for the score. It was his sixth touchdown in just six quarters of play. He came into Week 7 as the National Offensive Player of the Week.&nbsp;

Dodge City looked poised to tie the game on its second drive. Quarterback Grant Ciccarone drove his team to the Dragon 15 before Jaymar Mundy got his first pick of the season in the end zone.&nbsp;

Unexplicably, Benson was left alone down the seam and took Laible's pass 80 yards to the house on the very next play.&nbsp;

Laible would hit Benson again in the second quarter from eight yards away.&nbsp;

Laible finished with two TDs, both to Benson. Laible has seven touchdown passes in his last two road games at Dodge City. His day ended early in the third quarter on both trips.

Benson caught seven passes for 136 yards and the two scores.&nbsp;

Kedzior finished with 117 yards on 13 touches (9 yards per carry). The effort proved even better than his 8.2 yards per carry against Butler. Early in the contest, he was averaging "a mere" 6.2 yards per carry.

"It's kind of funny we're critiquing six yards per carry because he's been so explosive," head coach Drew Dallas said with a grin after the game.&nbsp;

Dallas graded his team a "high B" overall, saying he would like them to be at "an A-plus" by the end of the season.&nbsp;

"That's the challenge," Dallas said, "to find a way to get better each and every week and by the end, be playing your brand of football."

Hutchinson took a 27-0 lead into the break thanks to three touchdowns and a pair of Cole Segraves field goals.&nbsp;

Segraves entered the game just 1 of 5 with a long of 39. He nailed all four of his attempts Saturday.&nbsp;

Segraves took his 20% field goal percentage and turned it into 55% after hitting from 35, 33, 45 and 46.&nbsp;

The Dragon defense was strong again. Hutchinson allowed 16 yards on 12 plays in the second quarter.&nbsp;

Laible's day was over after his first drive in the third quarter.&nbsp;

Colin Shields took over the QB spot and threw for 176 yards on eight completions. He hit Tristan Smith on an intermediate route that would have normally been good for a first down. However, two Conquistador defenders collided on the tackle attempt, leaving nothing but green turf between Smith and the goal line. Smith took his second reception of the year 79 yards to pay dirt.&nbsp;

The Dragons also substituted defensively. Dodge City found the end zone twice in the second half.&nbsp;

Ciccarone found Jalen Rose Hannah twice for scores, once from the 5 and another time from the 7.&nbsp;

Rose Hannah finished with five receptions for 39 yards. The TDs were his first two of the season.&nbsp;

Jaheim Simmons finished a 13-play, 89 yard drive that took 7:10 off the clock with a two-yard burst. Simmons carried the ball 11 times for 37 yards and the TD.&nbsp;

Hutchinson finished with 599 yards of offense. The Dragons were 7 of 13 on third down.&nbsp;

The No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College Football team starts the second half of the 2022 season with the beginning of a two-game road trip when the Blue Dragons square off against the Dodge City Conquistadors.

Hutchinson (5-0, 2-0 KJCCC) and Dodge City (2-3, 1-2) kickoff at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.

The Blue Dragons have maintained their No. 2 national ranking for the fifth-consecutive week after a pair of tough Jayhawk Conference road victories at Coffeyville two weeks ago and a 27-19 win over No. 9 Butler last weekend at Gowans Stadium.

Third-year sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/kedzior_dylan_601l">Dylan Kedzior</a>&nbsp;had a career night with 230 rushing yards (234 total yards) and four total touchdowns last week against the Grizzlies. Kedzior was named the Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second-straight week and the Claremore, Oklahoma, native was named the NJCAA National Offensive Player of the Week this past Wednesday.

The victory was Hutchinson's 11th-straight win dating back to last season. The current win streak is now the third-longest in program history.

LOUIS (AP) — The Phillies scored six times in the ninth inning off the stingy St. Louis bullpen, highlighted by a bases-loaded single by Jean Segura, and Philadelphia beat the NL Central champion Cardinals 6-3 in the opening game of their National League wild-card series. The Phillies had struggled all afternoon against Jose Quintana and the rest of the Cardinals relievers. But they loaded the bases against Ryan Helsley in the ninth, then proceeded to push across six runs to take the opener of the best-of-three series. TORONTO (AP) — Luis Castillo and Andrés Muñoz combined on a shutout, Cal Raleigh hit a two-run homer and the Seattle Mariners won in their first postseason game since 2001, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0 in their AL wild-card series opener. Eugenio Suárez had two hits and two RBIs and rookie Julio Rodríguez reached base three times and scored twice for the Mariners, who can wrap up the series with a win in Game 2 Saturday. Robbie Ray starts for the Mariners against Kevin Gausman. Castillo scattered six singles in 7 /13 innings. He struck out five and walked none, facing the AL's second-highest scoring team. Castillo, acquired in a midseason trade from Cincinnati, became the first pitcher in Mariners history to throw more than seven scoreless innings in a postseason start.

Guardians take WC opener as Ramírez homers, Bieber dominates

CLEVELAND (AP) — José Ramírez connected for a two-run homer, Shane Bieber dominated Tampa Bay for 7 2/3 innings and the young Cleveland Guardians played with poise in their postseason debut, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 in their wild-card opener. Ramírez's shot off Shane McClanahan in the sixth inning helped Cleveland end an eight-game postseason losing streak. Bieber was rocked in his only other playoff appearance two years ago. He allowed just three hits this time and struck out eight before being lifted in the eighth. Emmanuel Clase took it from there, getting four outs for his first postseason save. Jose Siri homered for the Rays, who dropped their sixth straight game overall and must win Game 2 on Saturday to force a decisive Game 3 Sunday.

NFL players union urges quick changes to concussion protocol

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL Players Association has urged the league to implement changes to its concussion protocol in time to protect players in this weekend's games. The players' union wants to strengthen the protocol to avoid a repeat of what happened to Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in Week 3 against Buffalo. Tagovailoa was unstable when he walked off the field following a hit and was evaluated for a concussion, but he quickly returned to the game and the Dolphins said a back injury had caused his wobbly gait. Tagovailoa subsequently suffered a concussion four days later at Cincinnati and is out indefinitely.

On Football: NFL teams aren't doomed with losing Octobers

DENVER (AP) — A losing record in October doesn't mean playoff hopes are lost. Last year, the Patriots, Steelers and Eagles rebounded from a 1-3 start to earn a postseason berth. The Chiefs and 49ers both opened 2-3 and still reached their conference championship games. Entering Week 5, nine teams had losing records, including three 2021 playoff teams. Odds are at least one of those nine teams will bounce back and get to the postseason. The Indianapolis Colts took a first step, rallying to beat Denver in overtime Thursday night to even their record at 2-2-1. The AFC South is among four divisions with no club with a winning record.

NASCAR teams call revenue model 'broken,' warn of layoffs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR heads into Sunday's playoff elimination race with another issue to address. The most powerful teams in the stock car series are demanding a new charter agreement in 2025 that gives them more revenue. An executive with the 23XI Racing team owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin says the economic model is broken. The financial plight of the teams is now in the spotlight as NASCAR is also dealing with safety concerns surrounding its new Next Gen car.

Niederreiter scores in debut, Predators top Sharks in Prague

PRAGUE (AP) — Nino Niederreiter scored his debut goal for the Nashville Predators, who beat the San Jose Sharks 4-1 in Prague in the NHL regular-season opener. The teams will play again on Saturday at Prague's O2 Arena as part of the league's return to Europe for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Another newcomer, Kiefer Sherwood, put Nashville on top 1:01 into the game. Eeli Tolvanen also scored and Matt Duchene finished it off with an empty-netter. Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose in the first period, delighting the roaring crowd of 16,648 in his hometown. Tolvanen's goal at 1:24 of the second put the Predators ahead to stay.

Deshaun Watson set to return to Browns during 11-game ban

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Browns expect Deshaun Watson to return to their facility on Monday as the polarizing quarterback continues serving his 11-game NFL suspension for alleged sexual misconduct. Watson has been away from the Browns since Aug. 30, undergoing counseling and treatment in accordance with a settlement he made with the league. The 26-year-old QB was accused of being sexually inappropriate with women during massage therapy sessions while he played for the Texans. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski says he is eager to reunite with Watson, who won't be eligible to practice until next month.

DeGrom follows Scherzer, Mets on verge of getting aced out

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets find themselves on the verge of getting aced out. Max Scherzer gave up four home runs in a 7-1 opening loss to San Diego, and now Jacob deGrom starts against the San Diego Padres on Saturday night in Game 2, trying to extend a postseason run that could get extinguished less than 30 hours after it began. Owners of five Cy Young Awards, Scherzer and deGrom combine to earn $70 million, more than four entire big league teams. Mets fans, belief boosted by owner Steven Cohen's billions, had visions of a first title in 36 years.
