CHICAGO (AP) — Daniel Lynch pitched six crisp innings and the Kansas City Royals handed the Chicago White Sox their eighth straight loss with a 6-0 victory. 

Bobby Witt Jr. had two hits and Carlos Santana drove in two runs, helping Kansas City stop a four-game slide. The Royals were outscored 22-12 in a sweep at Seattle over the weekend. Pro football investor pleads guilty in cryptocurrency scheme

NEW YORK (AP) — A businessman who was one of the early investors in a failed professional football league called the Alliance of American Football has pleaded guilty to charges accusing him in $600 million cryptocurrency scheme.

Reginald Fowler was charged with bank fraud, wire fraud and other offenses that prosecutors say contributed to the AAF's quick demise. The guilty plea on Monday comes at a time when other fledgling leagues are competing to loosen the NFL's grip on pro football. Fowler's lawyer credited him for taking "full responsibility" for the fraud.

Sophomore Jack Torosian’s walkoff single to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning capped a four-run comeback for the Hutchinson Community College baseball team on Monday in a doubleheader sweep of the Sterling College Junior Varsity at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Blue Dragons took advantage of 12 free baserunners, while Will Edmunson and Landon Snyder combined for a six-hit shutout in a 12-0 Hutchinson run-rule win in five innings in the opening game.

Hutchinson then built a 6-0 lead through three innings only to see Sterling take a three-run lead after a nine-run fourth inning. Trailing by four runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Dragons tied the game and walked off for an 11-10 win in eight innings in Game 2.

The Blue Dragons are now a season-high seven games over .500 at 27-20. The Dragon open a four-game Jayhawk West series with the Pratt Beavers on Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Blue Dragons took advantage of 12 free baserunners in Game nine – nine walks and three hit batsmen – in their run-rule victory in the first game on Monday.

The Dragons scores four runs in the first on a two-run Ben McLaughlin double, P.J. Loucks sacrifice fly and Daniel Beebe RBI single. The Dragons added three more runs in the second – Braedyn Sommer scored on a wild pitch, Loucks had a second sacrifice fly and Bodi Wallar drove in a run with a single – for a 7-0 lead.

After the first two batters were retired in the fourth, eight Hutchinson players reached in a five-run inning. All the runs came on bases-loaded walks to Beebe, Bryce Logan, Sommer and McLaughlin and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to pinch-hitter Carter Booe.

Beebe was 2 for 2 with two RBIs to lead the seven-hit attack by the Blue Dragons. McLaughlin was 1 for 3 with a game-high three RBIs. Loucks had two RBIs on a pair of sacrifice flies. Seven different Blue Dragons had at least one RBI in the first game.

The Blue Dragons had six stolen bases. Sommer had a career high with four steals.

Edmondson (2-0) earned a win in his second-straight start with four shutout innings. Edmonson allowed six hits and two walks with six strikeouts. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the first with a strikeout, and then started a 1-5-6 double play in the second to keep the Warriors off the board.

Snyder had two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 fifth inning.

Trailing 10-6 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Dragons score four runs in the inning to force extra innings. McLaughlin had an RBI single, Torosian had an RBI triple and then scored on a wild pitch to cut the Sterling lead to 10-9.

The Dragons tied the game at 10-all on Sterling Sutcliffe’s two-out RBI single that scored Kael Babin.

With one out in the eighth, McLaughlin drew a walk and stole second base. He scored the winning run and Torosian lined a base hit to right field for the walk-off win.

Kael Babin, who snapped an 0 for 17 streak in Game 1, went 2 for 3 with three runs and a career-best three stolen bases in Game 2.

Sutcliffe was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Sutcliffe now has 14 RBIs in his last five games.

Wallar was 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Torosian was 2 for 2 with a triple and two RBIs.

Brady Beverman (3-1) pitched a spotless top of the eight to earn the win. Noah Kelley worked 3 2-3 innings out of the bullpen to keep the Dragons in the game. Kelley allowed one earned run on four hits.

Starter Luke Hornberger faced the minimum through the first three innings with five strikeouts and only one hit allowed.

Sterling rallied from six runs down with a nine-run fourth inning. Thanks to four errors, all nine runs were unearned. The Dragons added to the Warriors’ rally with four walks. Sterling had just three hits in the inning.

Dragon baseball rallies in Game 2 to sweep the Sterling JV

The Hutchinson Community College softball team climbed five spots to No. 15 in the latest NJCAA Division I softball rankings on Monday.

Ranked for the second time this season, the No. 15 rankings is the highest the Blue Dragons have been ranked since a No. 18 ranking in the Division II poll at the end of the 2018 season. This is also the highest the Blue Dragons have been ranked in a Division I poll since they were ranked No. 8 at the end of the 1988 season.

The Blue Dragons are 34-6 overall and are in second place in the Jayhawk Conference at 25-3. The Blue Dragons have won eight games in a row and have won 21 of their last 23 games.

The Dragons close out the regular season this week with a pair of road doubleheaders – on Wednesday at Seward County and on Saturday at Pratt.

Yavapai College remains the No. 1 in the NJCAA Division I rankings. Florida Southwestern State is second and Wallace State is third.

Butler is the only other Jayhawk Conference team. The Grizzlies are No. 6.

HASTINGS, Nebraska – Harry Crockett’s 2-under round of 70 on Monday afternoon gave the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team the narrowest of leads entering the final round of the NJCAA District III (Central District)/Region VI Championships at Lochland Country Club.

Under cool and breezy scoring conditions, the Blue Dragons posted rounds of 298 and 291 for a 36-hole total of 13-over par 589.

The Blue Dragons have a one-stroke lead over second-place Dodge City at 590 (301-289). Iowa Western is third at 591 (301-290). Garden City is fourth at 595 (300-295) and Indian Hills is fifth at 596 (304-292). Barton is sixth at 613.

The top five teams earn bids to the NJCAA Division I Championship in May in Odessa, Texas

The final round is an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.

Crockett opened the district tournament with a 1-over 73 on Monday morning on the Par-72 Lochland Country Club course. He posted one of only four scored under par on Monday, closing with a 2-under 70. Crockett is tied with Iowa Western’s Thomas Craig for the individual lead.

Crockett is the defending District III/Region VI individual champion.

The Blue Dragons have three players in the Top 10 after 36 holes.

Both Ben Partridge and Blake Saffel are part of an eight-way tie for fourth place at 4-over 148. Partridge shot rounds of 75 and 73. Saffell had back-to-back rounds of 74.

Dragons take slim lead into District final round

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Ryan Getzlaf finished his 17-year career spent entirely with the Anaheim Ducks in a 6-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues. Getzlaf got a behind-the-back assist with 2:41 to play, and the sellout crowd at Honda Center repeatedly roared for the Ducks' longtime captain and playmaking center from his first step on the ice to his final, teary departure. CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds ended an 11-game losing streak, their longest in six years, jumping to a first-inning lead and beating the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 as former first-round draft pick Nick Lodolo got his first major league win. Colin Moran drove in two runs for the Reds, who had been 0-4 at home this year and had not won anywhere since April 10 at World Series champion Atlanta. Cincinnati had been outscored 68-20 during the skid. Moran hit a sacrifice fly and Nick Senzel followed with an RBI single in the first. The Reds are a major league-worst 3-13.

SEATTLE (AP) — Jesse Winker capped an 11-pitch at-bat with a broken-bat single that scored Adam Frazier, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 in 12 innings to complete a three-game sweep. UNDATED (AP) — The Golden State Warriors were unable to complete a four-game sweep of Denver in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH'-lah YOH'-kihch) pumped in 37 points and fed Will Barton for a 3-pointer with 8.3 seconds left in the Nuggets' 126-121 victory against the Warriors. Barton's trey came after Monte Morris hit a seven-footer than broke a 121-all tie with 33 ½ seconds left.

Morris came through after Denver wasted a 17-point lead. He nailed five 3's in the third quarter and finished with 24 points.

Steph Curry dropped in 33 points, including a jumper that put Golden State ahead with just over a minute left. Klay Thomson had 32 points for the Warriors, who host Game 5 on Wednesday.

The Pelicans have knotted their series with the top-seeded Suns at two games apiece.

Brandon Ingram furnished 30 points and Jonas Valanciunas (YOH'-nuhs val-an-CHOO'-nuhs) had a double-double in New Orleans' 118-103 win against Phoenix. TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Ross Chastain took the lead near the checkered flag at Talladega Superspeedway to steal his second career NASCAR Cup Series victory.

Chastain simply stayed in line over the final few laps as leader Erik Jones and reigning Cup champion Kyle Larson fought for the win. Larson made his attempt on the final lap and Jones moved for the defensive block.

Chastain just pointed his Chevrolet straight, slipped past the leaders and won for the second time in five races.

Austin Dillon finished second for Richard Childress Racing in a 1-2 sweep for Chevrolet. Kyle Busch was third, followed by Larson and Martin Truex Jr.

AVONDALE, La. (AP) — Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele (SHOW'-flee) held off Sam Burns and Billy Horschel by two strokes in a record-setting, wire-to-wire victory in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Cantlay and Schauffele closed with an even-par-72 in the alternate-shot final round to finish at 29-under 259. That broke the tournament mark set by Kevin Kisner-Scott Brown and Jonas Blixt-Cameron Smith in 2017, the first year the event was played as a team event.

Cantlay and Schauffele opened with a record 59 in best-ball play Thursday, and began Sunday at 29 under after shattering the 54-hole record of 23 under.

Wichita, KS- The Wind Surge concluded their six-game homestand against the Midland RockHounds with a 10-7 victory thanks to an early first inning offensive boost scoring five runs.

Wichita’s bats were an early problem for Midland starter Matt Milburn as they scored five quick runs on four hits and three walks to take a quick 5-0 lead with the help of two extra base-hits from Edouard Julien and Michael Helman.

Matt Canterino took the hill for Wichita where he had a short, but efficient afternoon pitching three scoreless innings and retired all nine hitters with three strikeouts before being relieved by Ben Gross.

Midland grabbed three runs from three walks and a throwing error at the plate from Ben Gross in the fifth inning to cut the Wichita lead in half 6-3. Gross continued to find himself in a jam in the following inning where he gave up a two-run homer from Midland’s Shane Selman to cut the Wichita lead to 7-5.

The Wind Surge added two insurance runs in the sixth from Matt Wallner beating out a grounder to shortstop that scored one run, followed by heads-up baserunning from Spencer Steer to allow two to cross the plate to build the Surge lead to 9-5.

Wichita had four guys record multiple hits in the game. Matt Wallner went two for four with three RBIs in the ballgame and Kevin Merrell added to the tally going two for three with two RBIs.

The Surge bullpen was able to rally and close out the game pitching a combined six innings and adding eight strikeouts to end the series with a 10-7 victory.

The Wind Surge will resume action on Tuesday on the road for a six-game road trip at the Arkansas Travelers. First pitch is at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday.

PHOENIX, Az.—After a year at Auburn, Ro Torrence is heading to the Pac-12. The transfer cornerback announced his commitment to Arizona State on Saturday.

A former JUCO standout, Torrence transferred to Auburn ahead of the 2021 season. From Bessemer, Alabama, Hutchinson played at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas before joining the Tigers. Torrence was the 2020-21 NJCAA and KJCCC Defensive Player of the Year, helping Hutchinson to a national title, earning first-team JUCO All-America honors. As a JUCO transfer, Torrence initially committed to Tennessee before landing on The Plains.

At Auburn, Torrence played in 10 games this past season. He recorded 6 tackles, a pass breakup and a forced fumble. Torrence announced he was entering the NCAA transfer portal in March.

In addition to now holding the season and career saves record, Wertz also has the single-game record for strikeouts, fanning 18 batters on March 19 at Garden City. Now with 132 strikeouts for the season, Wertz moves into the single-season Top 10 at No. 10Also on Saturday, All-American Madison Grimes moved into a second-place tie with Jenn Tanno on the career hits list with 130 total hits. She extended her career RBI record to 110 and career runs scored record to 106. Hutchinson out-hit the Broncbusters 12-6 with four extra-base hits.Stipsits was 3 for 4 with a career-high four RBIs to lead the Blue Dragons in Game 1. Stipsits had an RBI groundout in the second and added an RBI single in the third to give the Dragons a 4-0 lead. The Blue Dragon freshman catcher doubled and scored in the fifth and then closed out the game via the run rule in the sixth with a two-run double to right-center field.Sterneker was 3 for 3 with a walk with a double, three runs and two RBIs.Grimes also went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. Grimes hit her fourth home run of the season in the first inning. Grimes also had two huge defensive plays in Game 1. Grimes threw out the tying run in second inning and made a great diving catch to end the sixth inning.Ella Dougherty extended the Blue Dragons’ fourth-longest hitting streak to 17 games with a fourth-inning single.Emily Munson improved to 7-0 in the pitching circle with a complete-game performance. Munson gave up six hits and two runs with no strikeouts and one walk. Munson gave up a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to Garden City’s Alexis Maestretti.&nbsp;GAME 2 RECAPThe Blue Dragons leaned on pitchers Loney and Wertz to complete the sweep.Loney improved to 7-4 for the season with five-plus innings of shutout softball. She allowed four hits and struck out two in earning his 17th career victory, which ties her for ninth on the career wins’ list with Kelli Walker (2008-09).Loney gave up a leadoff single to Garden City’s Tara Reid to start the season. Wertz entered the game at that point and struck out all six batters she faced for her seventh save of the season. In 11 innings against Garden City this season, Wertz has 28 strikeouts.The only offense for the Blue Dragons save in back-to-back at-bats to start the second inning.Natalie Bevan led off the inning with a groundball single up the middle. Sterneker then hit a 1-2 pitch from Garden City starter Lacey Kearsley over the left-field wall for a 2-0 Blue Dragon lead.After the home run to Sterneker, Kearsley retired the next 15 Blue Dragon batters she faced. Kearsley had two strikeouts.Dougherty went 0 for 3 in Game 2, ending her hitting streak at 17 games.
