The Surge jumped out to the early lead with a three run third inning with a two-run double from Matt Wallner. Spencer Steer crushed his fifth homer of the season, 109 mph off his bat in the fifth to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Naturals scored three runs in the fifth inning and Michael Massey tied the game in the sixth inning.

The Wind Surge offense exploded with six runs in the seventh sending ten batters to the plate. Leobaldo Cabrera hit a two-run home run for the second consecutive game.

Louie Varland improved his record to 4-1 pitching for 6.0 innings with 7 strikeouts.

ODESSA, Texas – Several contenders made third-round runs on Thursday, but the defending national champion Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team maintained a sizable lead after 54 holes at the NJCAA Division I National Championship.

The Blue Dragons take a 15-stroke lead over New Mexico Junior College into Friday’s final round at the Odessa Country Club. Hutchinson shot a third-straight round under par and have a 54-hole score of 15-under 848. New Mexico is second at 863 and Eastern Florida State is third at 868.

Blue Dragon sophomore and 2021 national champion Ben Partridge continues to lead the individual title chase after three rounds. Partridge is currently at 8-under par 208 after rounds of 68, 70 and 70.

Blue Dragon teammate Dominic Clemons and New Mexico’s Matthis Lefevre are tied for second at 6-under 210. Blue Dragon freshman Blake Saffell is fourth at 4-under 211.

Hutchinson, New Mexico and Eastern Florida State will once again pair for the final five tee times on Friday. Tee times for the Blue Dragons begin at 1:24 p.m.

Playing 2-under through the first nine holes on Thursday, Clemons suffered a double-bogey on No. 10, but quickly recovered with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11 and 12. Clemons had four birdies on the back nine to finish the round at 3-under 69.

Dragons up 15 shots headed into final round at nationals

FORT SCOTT – Sophomore Chase Torkelson tossed a career-high 7 1-3 innings to power the Hutchinson Community College baseball team to a Region VI Opening-Round Series sweep of the Fort Scott Greyhounds on Thursday.

Behind a strong effort from Torkelson on the mound and a three RBI game from shortstop Bryce Logan, the Blue Dragons defeated Fort Scott 10-2 in Game 2 to complete a sweep of the Greyhounds at Lions Field.

The Blue Dragons (36-21) advance to the eight-team double-elimination Central District Tournament, which begins Tuesday at Tointon Stadium on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan. The 10th-seeded Blue Dragons will play No. 2 seed and Jayhawk West champion Barton at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Fort Scott ends its season 32-26.

The Blue Dragons extended their season-long winning streak to eight games with the opening-round sweep.

Torkelson walked the first Fort Scott batter he faced, but immediately erased that miscue with a line drive double play to Ben McLaughlin. After a second first-inning walk, Torkelson retired 11-straight Greyhounds and didn’t allow a hit until Blake Wilson’s one-out single in the fifth inning. Torkelson gave up single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

The Blue Dragon starter improved to 5-4 on the mound this season with a career-best 7 1-3 innings. He allowed just four hits, all singles and struck out a career-high eight batters.

Kaden Wickersham got the final five outs to finish the sweep.

The Blue Dragons scored 10 or more runs for the eighth consecutive game. The Dragons out-hit Fort Scott 8-7. The Dragons took advantage of nine walks and a season-high five Blue Dragons getting hit with pitches.

Leading 1-0 after three innings, Logan smacked a three-run triple down the left-field line to take a 4-0 lead. Logan scored on a Cade Baker sacrifice fly to left to build a 5-0 lead after four innings.

The Dragons built a 7-0 lead in the sixth with a bases-loaded walk to McLaughlin and Baker scoring on a Sutcliffe fielder’s choice.

After Fort Scott pulled within 7-2, the Blue Dragons scored three insurance runs in the ninth after a Baker sacrifice fly, a Kael Babin RBI single and a McLaughlin ground-rule RBI double gave the Dragons a 10-2 lead.

Logan had another big offensive game to lead the Blue Dragons, going 2 for 3 with a double, triple, three runs and three RBIs. For the series, Logan went 5 for 7 with four RBIs.

Braedyn Sommer was 2 for 5 with a run scored.

McLaughlin’s ninth-inning double extended his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games.

Chiefs and Bucs to meet on Sunday Night Football Oct. 2

The Kansas Shrine Bowl and Pittsburg State University are excited to announce a new addition to the Kansas Shrine Bowl. The inaugural Kansas Shrine Bowl Media Camp will take place at Pittsburg State University from July 20-23, 2022. Attendees will get hands-on instruction from Pittsburg State University faculty as well as media professionals from across the region. Areas of emphasis will include: Sports Documentary Sports Features Studio Production Videography Sports Journalism Digital Video Editing and more! Students will spend the week covering a wide variety of events culminating with the Kansas Shrine Bowl all-star game. As part of the week-long buildup, Kansas Shriners host a cheer camp, marching band camp, golf tournament, junior all-star challenge, high school football combine, parade, and a participant appreciation banquet.&nbsp; The wide variety of events and camps, combined with three full days of football, band, and cheer practice, will give students ample opportunities to challenge themselves and expand their media skills. The early camp registration fee is $250 per student. The camp registration fee will increase to $300 after May 15, 2022. The registration deadline is June 15, 2022 and camp is limited to a max of 30 students.

Eligible students must be a High School Sophomore or Junior during the 2021-2022 school year.&nbsp; Camp registration fee includes room and board for the duration of camp, all meals, and a commemorative camp T-shirt.

The American released its regular season awards, highlighted by the second straight Shocker to earn Player of the Year honors after&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5637">Sydney McKinney</a>&nbsp;won the award in 2021. Wichita State placed eight on the all-conference teams, tied for the most of any school with UCF. The Beatrice, Neb., was a menace for opposing pitchers in conference play. Barnard hit .435 with 15 home runs, five doubles, 26 runs and 38 RBI to go with a slugging percentage of 1.242. At one point, Barnard homered in six straight games, tied for the second longest in NCAA history. She tied the single game school record with three home runs in a 24-1 win at East Carolina. Barnard enters postseason play leading the nation in home runs (30), RBI (77) and total bases (160) to go with a .409 average and 25 stolen bases. She is the only player in the country with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases. Barnard is the third Shocker to earn American Player of the Year honors, joining McKinney (2021) and Mackenzie Wright (2018). She also became a two-time First Team All-Conference selection. Joining Barnard on the All-Conference First Team were McKinney (unanimous),&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5631">Neleigh Herring</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5646">Lauren Lucas</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5638">Lauren Mills</a>. McKinney joins a select group of Shockers to earn three First Team All-Conference selections. Only five other players in school history have been selected to the first team three times. McKinney leads the nation in batting average (.497), hits (83) and runs per game to go with five triples, 12 doubles, 13 home runs, 37 RBI and 65 runs scored. She is just five hits away from breaking her own single season hits record, which she set just a season ago. Earlier this season McKinney became the all-time hits leader at Wichita State. Herring makes it two straight seasons on the First Team. In her senior campaign, Herring is hitting .344 with 14 home runs and 40 RBI. She is one of six Shockers with 10 or more home runs this season. In conference play, Herring hit .420 with six home runs and 21 RBI. A breakout sophomore campaign saw Lucas rewarded with her first All-Conference selection. In league play Lucas led all players in The American with a .491 average. For the season, she is hitting .409 with 10 home runs, 12 doubles, 36 RBI and 39 runs.&nbsp; Mills is also a first-time All-Conference pick. The Topeka native hit .306 with seven home runs and 20 RBI in conference play and is hitting .277 overall with 12 home runs and 39 RBI. Both her home run and RBI totals are career highs. McDonald became a two-time All-Conference Second Team member after doing it in 2019. The Norman, Okla., native is 9-8 in the circle this season with a team-high 82 strikeouts. She saved her best for conference play where she went 4-2 with a 3.00 ERA, which included a no-hitter vs. Memphis. Behind a career-best 10-game hit streak, Garcia came alive in league action. Four of her five home runs and 11 of her 16 RBI came in conference to go with a .357 batting average. The Texas Tech transfer, Jones, settled in nicely in her first season as a Shocker. Behind a .331 average, Jones is second on the team in doubles (11), home runs (15) and RBI (49). Her nine home runs and 26 RBI in conference games also ranked second on the team. At Texas Tech she had never had more than seven home runs and 26 RBI in a single season. Jones has thrived under the direction of the Wichita State coaching staff. Maybe no player has improved as much over the course of the season as the freshman lefty pitcher, Cooper. Cooper was a perfect 5-0 in the circle with a 2.46 ERA in AAC play, while logging three complete games. For the season, Cooper has a team-best 3.24 ERA to go with an 8-2 record in the circle. Her stellar pitching started in a 2-1 win in the series finale at South Florida where she allowed just the one run on only four hits. The five First Team selections tied for the most with UCF.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5636">Erin McDonald</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5648">Jessica Garcia</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6042">Zoe Jones</a>&nbsp;were named to the Second Team, while&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6046">Alison Cooper</a>&nbsp;was a unanimous choice for the All-Rookie Team. McKinney joins a select group of Shockers to earn three First Team All-Conference selections. Only five other players in school history have been selected to the first team three times. McKinney leads the nation in batting average (.497), hits (83) and runs per game to go with five triples, 12 doubles, 13 home runs, 37 RBI and 65 runs scored. She is just five hits away from breaking her own single season hits record, which she set just a season ago. Earlier this season McKinney became the all-time hits leader at Wichita State. Herring makes it two straight seasons on the First Team. In her senior campaign, Herring is hitting .344 with 14 home runs and 40 RBI. She is one of six Shockers with 10 or more home runs this season. In conference play, Herring hit .420 with six home runs and 21 RBI. A breakout sophomore campaign saw Lucas rewarded with her first All-Conference selection. In league play Lucas led all players in The American with a .491 average. For the season, she is hitting .409 with 10 home runs, 12 doubles, 36 RBI and 39 runs.&nbsp; Mills is also a first-time All-Conference pick. The Topeka native hit .306 with seven home runs and 20 RBI in conference play and is hitting .277 overall with 12 home runs and 39 RBI. Both her home run and RBI totals are career highs. McDonald became a two-time All-Conference Second Team member after doing it in 2019. The Norman, Okla., native is 9-8 in the circle this season with a team-high 82 strikeouts. She saved her best for conference play where she went 4-2 with a 3.00 ERA, which included a no-hitter vs. Memphis. Behind a career-best 10-game hit streak, Garcia came alive in league action. Four of her five home runs and 11 of her 16 RBI came in conference to go with a .357 batting average. The Texas Tech transfer, Jones, settled in nicely in her first season as a Shocker. Behind a .331 average, Jones is second on the team in doubles (11), home runs (15) and RBI (49). Her nine home runs and 26 RBI in conference games also ranked second on the team. At Texas Tech she had never had more than seven home runs and 26 RBI in a single season. Jones has thrived under the direction of the Wichita State coaching staff. Maybe no player has improved as much over the course of the season as the freshman lefty pitcher, Cooper. Cooper was a perfect 5-0 in the circle with a 2.46 ERA in AAC play, while logging three complete games. For the season, Cooper has a team-best 3.24 ERA to go with an 8-2 record in the circle. Her stellar pitching started in a 2-1 win in the series finale at South Florida where she allowed just the one run on only four hits. Wichita State opens the 2022 American Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday as the No. 2 seed against 7th-seeded Memphis at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT on ESPN+.&nbsp;&nbsp;

American Tabs Barnard Player of the Year, Highlighting Regular Season Awards

ODESSA, Texas – Freshmen Blake Saffell and Dominic Clemons posted career-low rounds Wednesday and the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team pulled away from the field at the halfway point of the NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships at the Odessa Country Club.

The Blue Dragons were the only team to shoot under par in the second round, posting a 6-under round of 282 and lead the 2022 Championship by 19 strokes with a 10-under-par score of 566.

Blue Dragon players own the Top 3 spots of the individual leaderboard after 36 holes.

Defending individual national champion Ben Partridge leads the tournament at 6-under 138. Saffell is second at 4-under 139 and Clemons is third at 3-under 141.

The Blue Dragons will pair in the third round with Eastern Florida State and New Mexico Junior College – those teams are tied for second – from 1:24 to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Four early birdies – two by Saffell and one each from Clemons and Addison Alonzo – and an Eagle by Partridge on the third hole got the Blue Dragons off to a fast start and immediately extended Hutchinson’s three-stroke lead to seven strokes after three holes.

The Blue Dragon lead continued to grow through the round.

Hutchinson’s 282 on Wednesday was the lowest team round through the first two days of the tournament. The next best team rounds posted in the second round were 3-over 291s by both Ranger College and Western Texas College.

Leading the Blue Dragons in the second round was Saffell, who carded a Blue Dragon career-low 5-under 67. Saffell had six birdies and a single bogey. Playing three under at the turn, Saffell had birdies on Nos. 12 and 16 to get to 5-under par for the round.

After opening the Championship with a 72 on Tuesday, Clemons continued his strong play with a 3-under 69 in the second round. Shooting 2-under at the turn, Clemons bogeyed both Nos. 10 and 14 to twice slip to 1-under. The Blue Dragon freshman birdied Nos. 15 and 17 to finish strong with a 69.

Partridge had both good and bad in his second round. Partridge erased two early bogeys with an eagle on the third hole. He then got to 3-under with birdies on Nos. 5, 6 and 11. Partridge then had back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15 to drop back to 1-under before finishing with a birdie on No. 18 to finish with a 70.

Only nine golfers are at even par or lower after 36 holes.

The Blue Dragons also counted Alonzo’s 4-over 76 on Wednesday. Harry Crockett posted a 77 in the second round.

Crockett is tied for 33rd and 5-over 149. Alonzo is at 6-over 150 through two rounds.

Dragons increase NJCAA lead to 19 strokes after 36 holes

FORT SCOTT – The Hutchinson Community College baseball team extended its winning streak and streak of scoring 10 or more runs to seven games each on Wednesday and took a 1-0 series lead over the Fort Scott Greyhounds in the opening series of the Region VI Baseball Tournament at Lions Field.

Starting pitcher Jack Whitlock grinded through six innings for his eighth win of the season while Braedyn Sommer, Ben McLaughlin and Hunter Gotreaux drove in two runs each as the Blue Dragons defeated Fort Scott 10-7 in Game 1.

Game 2 of the best-of-3 opening-round series will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday. The Blue Dragons improved to 35-21. Fort Scott is now 32-25.

McLaughlin extended his hitting streak to a career-long 14 games on Wednesday, going 3 for 6 with a pair of RBIs. McLaughlin had a two-run single that capped a three-run fifth inning that pushed the Blue Dragon lead to 7-2.

Now with 138 career RBIs, McLaughlin moved into second place on the Blue Dragon career list. Now with 80 RBIs for the season, McLaughlin is third on the Blue Dragon single-season list.

Logan went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. He doubled and scored in the second inning and had an RBI single in the third to give the Blue Dragons a 3-1 lead.

Catcher Cade Baker was on base all five times, going 2 for 2 with three walks.

Right fielder Sterling Sutcliffe hit his 19th home run of the season, a solo homer with two out in the seventh inning. Sutcliffe also tied a Blue Dragon single-game record with four walks, matching Bobby Morgenson’s four walks in 2019. Sutcliffe is tied with McLaughlin and Brad Flanders (2002) for fourth on the single-season home run list. He now has 26 career home runs, which is tied for fourth with Michael Helman and Wyatt Divis on the career list.

The Blue Dragons took advantage of 11 Fort Scott walks and one key catcher’s interference against the Greyhounds. The 11 walks tied for the sixth in Blue Dragon single-game history.

Whitlock (8-3) gave up single runs in the first and fourth innings and then labored through the sixth as Fort Scott scored a pair on two hits, a walk and hit batter. Whitlock allowed eight hits and four earned runs with three strikeouts and three walks.

Kaden Wickersham and Zane Covey pitched scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively. Fort Scott scored three runs in the ninth. Michael Uhler had to get the final two outs for his first career save.

Trailing 1-0 after one inning, the Blue Dragons responded hen Braedyn Sommer hit a two-run single to left center for a 2-1 lead.

Leading 4-1 after four, the Blue Dragons took advantage of a two-out catcher’s interference call on Fort Scott when Sommer at the plate. McLaughlin grounded a two-run single through the right side and Sommer later scored on a passed ball to extend the Dragon lead to 7-4.

Hutchinson got some needed insurance with two out in the seventh. Sutcliffe homered to right and then Gotreaux drove a base hit to left that bounced over the head of the Fort Scott left fielder and rolled to the wall which allowed Ryan Henderson and Jack Torosian to score to make it 10-4.

For the first time since 2019, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team had a player named NJCAA Division I National Player of the Week.

One day after earning Jayhawk Conference honors, Blue Dragon sophomore third baseman Ben McLaughlin earned national honors after a dazzling four-game series last week against Dodge City.

McLaughlin is the first Blue Dragon since Zane Schmidt on April 3, 2019 to earn national Player of the Week honors.

The sophomore from Golden, Colorado, had a huge series against Dodge City to lead the Blue Dragons to a series sweep. McLaughlin hit .688 (11 for 16) and had a 1.438 slugging percentage with three doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs against the Conquistadors.

In the series opener, McLaughlin was 3 for 5 with five RBIs. He hit a go-ahead two-run home run in extra innings to complete a Blue Dragon comeback.

The Wind Surge defeated the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 4-3 on Wednesday evening in game two of their six-game road trip.

The Wind Surge snagged an early lead in the top of the second with an RBI double by Michael Helman. Wichita added a pair of runs in the sixth with a two-run homer by Leobaldo Cabrera, his first of the season. Austin Martin drove in the fourth run of the night with a RBI triple in the ninth.

Matt Canterino pitched four scoreless innings. He retired 10 consecutive batters while striking out six in the game.

The Naturals went six innings without a run before Logan Homer smacked his third homer of the season. In the bottom of the ninth the Naturals rallied scoring 2 runs, but the comeback fell short. Austin Schulfer earned his fifth save of the season and Kody Funderburk earned the win in relief for Wichita.

Notes: Michael Helman extended his hitting streak to eight, he exited the game in the fifth inning…Dennis Ortega reached base in his 19th consecutive game, second highest in the Texas League…Matt Canterino has not allowed a run in his last five games, 17 consecutive scoreless innings.

KBCA Awards announced

Fourteen Kansas high school senior football players have been selected by the Coach Bill Snyder Family/Sunflower Chapter of the National Football Foundation as 2021-22 scholar-athletes, including one from Inman and another from Kingman.

“This is an accomplished group of young men. We could not be more pleased to recognize their achievements on the field, but also in the classroom and in serving their respective communities,” Chapter President Gerry McGuire said. “Football is the ultimate team sport and these individuals displayed great leadership for their programs. We congratulate them, their coaches, parents and fans who supported them during their careers.”

These awards recognize excellence in academics, football and community leadership as selected by the chapter board of directors. The honorees had to be nominated by their head coach. The list includes:

The Naturals scored four times in the third inning, Seuly Matias hit a three run home run. Wichita scored three runs in the fourth inning from back-to-back home runs by Alex Isola and Andrew Bechtold to shrink the Naturals lead to 4-3. Bechtold finished the day going two for four

Rangers beat Royals Tuesday

ODESSA, Texas – Sophomore Ben Partridge’s opening-round 68 helped the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team to a three-stroke lead after the opening round of the NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships at Odessa Country Club.

The defending national champion Blue Dragons posted a team score of 4-under 284 after 18 holes on Tuesday. Hutchinson leads second-place Odessa by three strokes. Eastern Florida State and New Mexico Junior College are tied for third at even-par 288.

The Blue Dragons counted Partridge’s 68 and even-par 72s from sophomore Harry Crockett and freshmen Blake Saffell and Dominic Clemons.

Partridge’s 68 is tied with Midland’s JT Pittman for the individual player lead. There are 20 players, three of them are Blue Dragons, within four strokes of the individual lead.

Partridge opened strong playing the six holes in 4-under par with birdies on Nos. 2 and 5 and an eagle-2 on the 440-yard par-4 fifth hole. Partridge bogeyed Nos. 9 and 14 to fall to 2-under before back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16. Partridge finished the round with pars on Nos. 17 and 18.

Crockett got as low as 2-under after scoring an eagle on the 415-yard par-4 sixth hole. Crockett suffered bogeys on Nos. 14 and 16 to close at 72.

Saffell posted three birdies and three bogeys, playing the back nine in 1-under to finish at even-par 72.

Clemons came up big for the Blue Dragons and finished the back nine stroke to keep the Blue Dragons in first place. Clemons was 2-over after 11 holes, but finished with birdies on Nos. 13 and 16 to close at even-par 72.

Crockett, Saffell and Clemons are in a nine-way tie for 12th place at 72.

Sophomore Addison Alonzo posted a 2-over 74 in the opening round. Alonzo had two birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey in his round. He is tied for 34th at 2-over par.

The Blue Dragons will once again be paired with No. 1-ranked Midland and No. 2-ranked Central Alabama for Wednesday’s second round. The Blue Dragons will see off beginning at 1:24 p.m.

Hutchinson Community College baseball third baseman Ben McLaughlin was named the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week after an incredible final week of the regular season to lead the Blue Dragons to a 4-0 record.

McLaughlin is currently on a 13-game hitting streak where he is hitting .542 (26 for 48 with six home runs and 25 RBIs).

McLaughlin was the Blue Dragons’ first conference player of the week. Jack Whitlock was the KJCCC Pitcher of the week on April 5.
