Zach LaVine is staying in Chicago. Same goes for Jusuf Nurkic in Portland. Day 2 of NBA free agency brought another max deal — this time, going to LaVine, who secured the richest contract in Bulls history when he agreed to a $215 million, five-year contract. Nurkic got by far the biggest payday of his career, agreeing to a four-year, $70 million contract with Portland. Tim van Rijthoven is a 25-year-old Dutchman who has eliminated two seeded players on his way to a fourth-round matchup against No. 1 Djokovic. The latest victory for van Rijthoven came against No. 22 Nikoloz Basilashvili. That followed a win over No. 15 Reilly Opelka. Van Rijthoven will play Djokovic on Sunday.

US men's soccer reach 1st Olympics since 2008 with U-20 win

The United States qualified for its first Olympic men's soccer tournament since 2008 when the Americans beat Honduras 3-0 at San Pedro Sula in the semifinals of the Under-20 championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean. Paxten Aaronson of the Philadelphia Union, a brother of Leeds midfielder Brenden Aaronson, scored in the third minute. Alejandro Alvarado added a goal in the 23rd, and Quinn Sullivan in the 43rd as the U.S. earned a berth in the 16-nation field. In a surprising and seismic shift in college athletics, the Big Ten voted Thursday to add Southern California and UCLA as conference members beginning in 2024.

The expansion to 16 teams will happen after the Pac-12’s current media rights contracts with Fox and ESPN expire and make the Big Ten the first conference to stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

The announcement, which caught the Pac-12 off-guard, came almost a year after Oklahoma and Texas formally accepted invitations to join the Southeastern Conference in July 2025.

Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren said USC and UCLA, both members of the Pac-12 and its previous iterations for nearly a century, submitted applications for membership and the league’s Council of Presidents and Chancellors voted unanimously to add the Los Angeles schools.

The NBA generated more basketball-related income than ever this past season, the total number coming up just short of $9 billion.

Business is good. The first night of free agency underscored how good.

Nikola Jokic agreed to the biggest contract in NBA history, Bradley Beal agreed to a deal worth a quarter-billion dollars, and the money just kept flowing. Shortly after midnight Friday in the Eastern time zone, three more players — Karl-Anthony Towns, Devin Booker and Ja Morant — also agreed to huge-money extensions.

Towns and Booker agreed to four-year deals that will commence in 2024 and are worth at least $224 million, their agent, Jessica Holtz of CAA, said. Morant will sign his first rookie extension, one that’ll be worth at least $193 million and could reach the $230 million range, according to Tandem Sports, which represents him.

Those five players — Jokic, Beal, Towns, Booker and Morant — had more than $1.1 billion in money committed to them in their new deals, highlighting the moves made Thursday when the NBA’s annual free-agent negotiating window opened.

Kevin Durant may be taking his quest for more titles elsewhere.

Durant has requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, according to a person with direct knowledge of the decision that undoubtedly will have teams scrambling to put together offers for the perennial All-Star.

The Nets have been working with Durant to find a trade partner, and he has multiple teams on his preferred list, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because neither the player nor Brooklyn revealed any details publicly.

ESPN first reported Durant’s trade request, citing Phoenix and Miami as two of his preferred destinations. The bombshell came just hours before the NBA’s free-agent period for this summer was set to begin.

Wichita, KS- The Wind Surge fell short to the Springfield Cardinals 5-1 on Friday night behind a strong start on the mound from Cardinal starter Gordon Graceffo to even up the series.

Springfield scored three early runs in the first inning as Nick Dunn hit an RBI single to score Mike Antico, and Chase Pinder hit a two-run RBI double to extend the Cardinals lead to 3-0. Pinder finished the ballgame one for three with three RBIs.

Gordon Graceffo got the start on the mound for the Red Birds and had an efficient outing as he pitched five and two thirds’ innings and allowed just one run on four hits and tallied two walks and two strikeouts to earn his fourth win of the season.

State Board of Ed to hold KSHSAA class hearing in August in Topeka

HAYSVILLE, Kan.-The Hutchinson Monarchs scored three unanswered runs, including the game-winning tally in the 12th inning to win 5-4 over the Haysville Aviators last night (June 30) at Plagens-Carpenter Park.&nbsp;

The winning run occurred when Joey Baran led off the 12th with a walk and came around to score on an error.&nbsp;

Haysville had taken a 4-2 lead on a two-run homer by Ryan Henderson in the bottom of the sixth, but&nbsp;Jimmy Blumberg answered for Hutchinson with a two-run single in the seventh to tie the game again.

The Monarchs made the most of their five hits, while the Aviators had five players record at least two hits on the night.&nbsp;

Reed Scott finished the game with three scoreless innings to earn the win for the Monarchs.&nbsp; Arturo Ramirez started for the Aviators and struck out 10 while scattering four runs over 6.2 innings.&nbsp;

Hutchinson (16-5) will now host Haysville (12-10) tonight (July 1) starting at 7 pm at Hobart-Detter Field.&nbsp;

The 2017 French Open champion from Latvia beat Begu 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 on No. 3 Court. The 12th-seeded Ostapenko trailed 6-3, 1-0 when she turned things around. She won nine straight games to take a 3-0 lead in the deciding set before Begu was able to hold serve again. Ostapenko then had to save a break point in the next game before taking a 4-1 lead. Trial for US basketball star begins in Moscow-area court

MOSCOW (AP) — American basketball star Brittney Griner has arrived at a Moscow-area court where she is scheduled to go on trial. Griner was arrested in February on cannabis possession charges at an airport while traveling to play for a Russian team. Police said she was carrying vape canisters with cannabis oil. Her trial is set to get underway on Friday. The Phoenix Mercury center and two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs. Fewer than 1% of defendants in Russian criminal cases are acquitted, and unlike in the U.S., acquittals can be overturned.

The announced came almost a year after Oklahoma and Texas formally accepted invitations to join the Southeastern Conference in July 2025.

In a seismic shift in college athletics, the Big Ten voted Thursday to add Southern California and UCLA as conference members beginning in 2024.

The expansion to 16 teams will happen after the Pac-12's current media rights contracts with Fox and ESPN expire and make the Big Ten the first conference to stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

The announcement came almost a year after Oklahoma and Texas formally accepted invitations to join the Southeastern Conference in July 2025.

"Ultimately, the Big Ten is the best home for USC and Trojan athletics as we move into the new world of collegiate sports," USC athletic director Mike Bohn said. "We are excited that our values align with the league's member institutions. We also will benefit from the stability and strength of the conference; the athletic caliber of Big Ten institutions; the increased visibility, exposure, and resources the conference will bring our student-athletes and programs; and the ability to expand engagement with our passionate alumni nationwide."

The Big Ten is building on previous expansion into the nation's largest media markets, and the move allows the conference to keep pace with the SEC as one of the most powerful entities in college sports.

The Big Ten has expanded twice in recent years, with Nebraska joining in 2011 and Maryland and Rutgers in 2014.

USC and UCLA fit the Big Ten's academic profile. Both schools are among the 65 members of the Association of American Universities, which is made up of top research universities. All Big Ten schools except Nebraska are members.

"The Pac-12 has always shared our values and continues to innovate, working hard on behalf of its student-athletes and many fans," UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond said. "At the same time, each school faces its own unique challenges and circumstances, and we believe this is the best move for UCLA at this time. For us, this move offers greater certainty in rapidly changing times and ensures that we remain a leader in college athletics for generations to come."

The move to the Big Ten would greatly enhance USC and UCLA's revenues.

The Pac-12 distributed only $19.8 million per school in fiscal year 2021, by far the least among Power 5 conferences. The Big Ten's per-school distribution was $46.1 million, second only to the SEC's $54.6 million.

The Pac-12 has had difficulty getting its conference television network untracked while the Big Ten Network is the most established of the conference networks.

USC and UCLA would be taking a step up in football, both in visibility and competition.

"Pac-12 After Dark" televised games that kick off in the middle to late evenings in most of the country have made it difficult for the conference to get exposure. The Pac-12 has had teams in the College Football Playoff just twice — Oregon (2014 season) and Washington (2016).

Losing flagship schools like USC and UCLA would be a major blow to the Pac-12, which has had a long and amicable relationship with the Big Ten best exemplified by its Rose Bowl partnership.

The Big Ten, Pac-12 and Atlantic Coast Conference last August formed an alliance in the wake of Oklahoma and Texas joining the SEC. The conferences said the 41 members would take a collaborative approach to charting the future of athletics. The three conferences set up scheduling arrangements in some sports and have pooled resources to promote athlete welfare.

Less than a year later, the future of the alliance would appear uncertain if the Big Ten takes two of the Pac-12's biggest brands.

USC and UCLA would be severing conference relationships that go back a century.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs outslugged the Great Bend Bat Cats Tuesday night at Hobart-Detter 13-6.

Kansas will return home to host Southern Utah on Friday, Nov. 18, before heading to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis, Nov. 23-25. The event’s field includes future Big 12-member BYU, Butler, Dayton, N.C. State, USC, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

KU will then host Texas Southern on Nov. 28 and Seton Hall on Dec. 1 in the Big 12/BIG EAST Battle. Next, Kansas will travel to HyVee Border Showdown foe Missouri on Dec. 10. Last year, Kansas defeated Missouri, 102-65, in Allen Fieldhouse in the first meeting between the two schools since 2012.

Kansas will then host Harvard on Dec. 22 and the 2022-23 Big 12 league schedule will begin Dec. 31. On Saturday, Jan. 28, Kansas will play at Kentucky in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
