ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta's Younghoe Koo booted a 41-yard field goal in overtime after the Carolina Panthers missed a pair of kicks that could have won the game. That gave the Falcons an improbable 37-34 victory that maintained their hold on first place in the NFC South at 4-4. The teams combined for three touchdowns in the final 3:06 of regulation before a silly penalty by the Panthers' D.J. Moore opened the door for the Falcons to pull it out. Moore hauled in a 62-yard touchdown pass from P.J. Walker with 12 seconds left, but his unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed the extra point to a 48-yard attempt. Bell wins, Chastain rides the wall to earn title race spots

Christopher Bell worked his way into NASCAR's championship round the only way he could, winning at Martinsville Speedway to claim a spot in the finale. Ross Chastain reached the title race with a move out of a video game. The pair will face Joey Logano, who entered Sunday's race with his spot in the title race assured, and Chase Elliott for the championship at Phoenix Raceway. Chastain earned his berth by pinning his Chevrolet against the outside wall of the 0.526-mile speedway and using the wall to move from 10th place to fifth.

James, Davis help Lakers win for first time this season

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James scored 26 points and Anthony Davis added 23 to help the Los Angeles Lakers to their first win of the season with a 121-110 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Russell Westbrook had 18 points for the Lakers (1-5), who had lost their first five games of the season under first-year head coach Darvin Ham. Los Angeles was the last winless team in the NBA. K-State up to No. 13 in AP Poll

DODGE CITY – After dominating the first set, Little River found itself locked at a set apiece with Flinthills after the Mustangs swiped the momentum away in the Class 1A Division I volleyball final.&nbsp; Little River coach Kim Rolfs’ message to her team was simple: Don’t let the opportunity slip away.&nbsp; “I just told the kids, ‘You may never find yourselves in this situation again, cherish the moment and go out and do what we do and let it happen,’ ” Rolfs said.&nbsp; “The sport of volleyball is so tough because you have that rollercoaster, and you’ve got to ride that rollercoaster and hope you can get back up to the top and take that momentum," Rolfs added. It didn’t take long for Little River to regain its form from the first set, quickly taking control of the decisive set en route to a 25-11, 18-25, 25-9 win over Flinthills at United Wireless Arena to capture the school’s second state volleyball title and first since 1984.&nbsp; “I’m just super proud that they were able to hang in there," Rolfs said. "When we walked back on the court for that third set, I said ‘You’ve got to get yourself up. You can’t come out flat.' We won that first ball and I think that got them going.” “We just tried not to get down on ourselves and we knew we could win if we worked together,” Little River junior Alaina Eck said.&nbsp; Four of Little River’s five wins on the weekend went to three sets, including its pool play match against Flinthills. Little River (40-4) beat Pretty Prairie 25-16, 26-28, 25-21 in the semifinals.&nbsp; “I think this weekend we did the best we ever have with just letting go of the bad points and keep going,” Eck said.&nbsp; When things were looking bleak for Flinthills, the Mustangs found one last run in them. After a 15-all tie, Flintills finished the second set on a 10-3 run to even up the match.&nbsp; The Mustangs’ push came when they were shorthanded. They lost junior Kolby Holcomb to a leg injury on Friday, and then sophomore Paige Corter also went down with a leg injury in the first set of the title match.&nbsp; “They just tried to find it within themselves to make it work,” Flinthills coach Crystal Ratcliff said. “We had to throw a defensive specialist on the front row, so they all kind of had to pick up their game at that moment and fought back to win that set. “I’m so proud of them. I couldn’t ask for anything better.” Led by an impressive junior class that includes standouts Eck, Aubrey Olander, Ashley Stephenson, Kate Ellwood and Kami Grasser, Litter River relies on a balanced attack. “This is the most balanced team I’ve ever had,” Rolfs said. “You look at setting a ball, and you can be more creative, as long as you have ball control. And you can look at other teams’ weaknesses and go at them. We’ve got a solid group and I’m super excited to get it done.” Little River should be well equipped to make another run next year, also returning key underclassmen include Havana Olander, Chenzi DeBaere and Lucy Wright in addition to the juniors.&nbsp; Littler River was thrilled to send their lone senior, libero Mea DeBaere, out on a high note.&nbsp; “She’s been a staple for us for four years,” Rolfs said. “She had to fill the libero position as a freshman because the girl that was ahead of her had a knee injury and couldn’t play.&nbsp; “Great leader, great kid. She’s going to be tough to replace. I’m glad that we could send her out with that championship.” Flinthills finished off its best season in school history with a 40-4 record. The Mustangs reached the title match for the first time with a thrilling 17-25, 25-22, 25-22 win over Doniphan West in the semifinals. “I knew this was an exceptional team who could go and make a run at the state championship,” Ratcliff said. “This was the first time in school history we’ve made it this far. They’re an exceptional team and a great group of girls.” Flinthills will lose four seniors – Karly Girty, Taren Lakin, Madison Alvord and Laura Scribner.&nbsp; Doniphan West (38-6) rebounded with a 25-17, 25-14 in the third-place match against Pretty Prairie.&nbsp; It was a whirlwind couple of days for Doniphan West’s Claire Cole and Belle Smith, who play both volleyball and run cross country.&nbsp; State qualifiers for the Class 1A meet in Wamego, Cole and Smith took a chartered plane back home following Friday’s pool play matches.&nbsp; After running the state meet Saturday morning, Cole and Smith flew back to Dodge City and arrived at United Wireless Arena about 30 minutes before Doniphan West’s semifinal against Flinthills.&nbsp; Cole, one of the Mustangs’ senior leaders on the court, placed eighth at the 1A meet with a time of 21:29.32.&nbsp;

They’re a very, very good team.” The Trojans weren’t going to be denied this time, cruising to a 25-12, 25-13 win over Smith Center in the championship match on Saturday at United Wireless Arena to earn redemption and complete a 44-1 season.&nbsp; Hillsboro controlled the match from the get-go, keeping a gritty Smith Center squad out of rhythm. “I didn’t feel we were completely focused (Friday for pool play),” Arnold said. “I thought we played a little tight and a little distracted. LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The 15-6 (5-4 Big 12) Kansas Jayhawks will take on the 11-10 (1-8 Big 12) Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday (October 30) for the Jayhawks for a Cure match in front of a sold out crowd in Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena. The match will begin at 3 p.m. CT and will be broadcast by ESPNU.

The Sooners lead the Jayhawks in the all-time series record 54-42. KU and Oklahoma last met on September 28, when the Jayhawks swept the Sooners 3-0. Redshirt freshman Ayah Elnady led the Kansas offense with 14 kills, hitting .481. Three Jayhawks recorded double digit kills, Elnady (14), sophomore Caroline Bien (11) and super-senior Rachel Langs (10). Sophomore Camryn Turner collected 33 assists and five digs. Junior Kennedy Farris tallied 13 digs and three assists. Langs had five total blocks in the three sets. As a team. Kansas hit .385 and held OU to .165 hitting.

We started well and played hard in a lot of stretches, but we broke down in serve receive in the middle part of the match. It is very difficult team to generate offense against out of system. I thought we played hard and we are improving. We have that fight to get two or three points better both individually and collectively." On the difference in the first set… "We had consistency and we had a good clip offensively at .313. That is really good for us. Side-out efficiency had a lot to do with it too. Our serving and passing were strong as well. Our focus was on and we clicked. We were composed for most of the course of the match and it started there." HOW IT HAPPENED Set One –K-State 25, Texas 23 In a set with 15 tie scores and two lead changes, neither side saw more than a two-point run to kick off the match. The Wildcats and the Longhorns traded points until a three-point run in the final steps gave K-State the 25-23 win. <a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/loren-hinkle/8073">Loren Hinkle</a>&nbsp;collected two aces in the last two points of the set. The setter added 11 assists. Elena Baka and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/aliyah-carter/8071">Aliyah Carter</a>&nbsp;each tallied four kills with Carter walking away at a .375 clip. Logan Eggleston led all attackers with six kills at a .250 pace and posted four digs. Madisen Skinner added three kills while Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres donned 14 assists. The Cats held UT to a .242 output with 15 kills. K-State completed a .312 hitting percentage with 13 kills in the set. Set Two – Texas 25, K-State 13 Texas led from start to finish on set two. The Longhorns' run was bolstered by 7-1 and 8-1 spurts mid-match. Eggleston donned six kills at a .414 pace. Ka'aha'aina-Torres, Zoe Fleck, and Keonilei Akana each collected four digs on the back line. <a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/kadye-fernholz/8072">Kadye Fernholz</a>&nbsp;saw three kills (.375) while Baka followed with two on twelve attempts.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/mackenzie-morris/8076">Mackenzie Morris</a>&nbsp;picked up four digs for the Wildcats. Hinkle tallied five assists and a block assist. K-State posted .062 hitting percentage with just seven kills while Texas had 15 kills at a .414 pace. Set Three – Texas 25, K-State 16 UT started on a hot streak, earning a 4-1 lead to start the set. K-State battled back within one point at 8-7 on back-to-back&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/haley-warner/8092">Haley Warner</a>&nbsp;kills. The Longhorns found the 25-16 win on a 9-2 run at the end of the set. A three-point run, spurred by a Shaylee Myers block and kill, helped the Wildcats secure a 17-17 tie once more. Asjia O'Neal tallied three of the Longhorns' final four kills to put the set and match away. The middle blocker collected four kills at a .667 [ace while Skinner added six (.308). Ka'aha'aina-Torres finished with 13 assists. Fleck and Akana combined for 11 digs as O'Neal and Phillips posted two block assists each. The No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College Women's Soccer Team will open the postseason on Sunday at home.

The Blue Dragons (11-3) will open the 2022 Region VI Tournament against Johnson County (8-10) at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Salthawk Sports Complex. The game will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.

The Blue Dragons qualified for their 18th-straight postseason after finishing second in the Jayhawk West this season. Johnson County placed third in the Jayhawk East. The winner of the

Hutchinson-Johnson County match will play the Butler-Dodge City winner at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Stryker Soccer Complex in Wichita.

The Blue Dragons lost the only meeting with Johnson County this season, falling 3-1 on September 17 in Overland Park. The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Johnson County tied the match before halftime and scored two second-half goals to clinch the victory.

The Blue Dragons have dropped seven straight and 8 of 9 to the Cavaliers. This will be the ninth Region VI tournament meeting, but the first in the opening round. The Dragons are 2-6 against Johnson County in the Region VI Tournament.

Hutchinson is 13-4 all-time in the opening-round of the Region VI Tournament, including 9-2 at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Astros burst ahead, beat Phillies 5-2, tie World Series 1-1

HOUSTON (AP) — Framber Valdez made a five-run lead stand up after Houston's lightning first-inning burst, Alex Bregman homered and the Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 to tie the World Series at one game apiece. Just like in Game 1, the Astros rushed to a 5-0 lead. Unlike ace Justin Verlander in the opener, Valdez and Houston held on. Valdez rebounded from a pair of poor outings in last year's Series to pitch shutout ball into the seventh, and the bullpen survived a couple of jams to close things out. Jose Altuve, Jeremy Peña and Yordan Alvarez all doubled as Houston took a two-run lead four pitches in against Zack Wheeler. An error allowed another run in the first and Bregman added a two-run homer in the fifth.

Michigan State players rough up Michigan players in tunnel

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State players roughed up Michigan defensive back Ja'Den McBurrows in the Michigan Stadium tunnel following their game Saturday night. After the fourth-ranked Wolverines beat the Spartans 29-7, at least three Michigan State players pushed, punched and kicked McBurrows in and near a hallway that does not lead to either locker room. A police investigation is underway. It is the second straight game at Michigan that included an altercation in the long, narrow tunnel that goes from the locker rooms to the field. Penn State coach James Franklin said a policy change was needed to keep the process of teams using the tunnel more orderly.

AP source: Spurs waived Primo after allegation of exposure

A person with knowledge of the matter says a female former San Antonio Spurs employee has alleged that now-former Spurs guard Josh Primo exposed himself in her presence. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no details had been revealed publicly by the Spurs, Primo or the accuser. Attorney Tony Buzbee confirmed to AP that he has been hired by "a former contractor" with the Spurs. He is the attorney who represented 24 women who sued Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, then of the Houston Texans, accusing him of sexual assault or harassment.

Phillies not worried about Astros' Valdez odd hand rubbing

HOUSTON (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson says he isn't concerned about Houston starter Framber Valdez's unusual hand rubbing during Game 2 of the World Series, downplaying speculation on social media that the left-hander was up to something fishy during a dominant victory. Videos circulating on the internet showed Valdez repeatedly rubbing his left thumb across his right palm, then rubbing the ball between pitches. Valdez pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning of the Astros' 5-2 victory, which evened the Series at a win each. Thomson said Philadelphia's dugout noticed what Valdez was doing but had no concern that he was adding a foreign substance to the ball.

Altuve breaks out with 3 hits as Astros even World Series

HOUSTON (AP) — For the first time in a sluggish postseason, Jose Altuve looked like himself in Game 2 of the World Series. Altuve had three hits, including a double, sparking the Houston Astros to a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night to even the Fall Classic. The 2017 AL MVP had been curiously quiet this month, opening the playoffs with a career-worst 0-for-25 slump and entering Game 2 a paltry 4 for 37 this postseason. He nearly matched that hit total by the seventh inning Saturday.

Irving says he embraces all religions, defends right to post

NEW YORK (AP) — Kyrie Irving says he embraces all religions, defiantly defending his right to post whatever he believes after the Brooklyn Nets owner was disappointed that Irving appeared to back an antisemitic film. Irving says: "We're in 2022. History is not supposed to be hidden from anybody and I'm not a divisive person when it comes to religion." He added he embraced all walks of life and says that just because he posts about something doesn't mean he believes everything about it.

Duggan throws for 3 TDs, No. 7 TCU beats West Virginia 41-31

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — No. 7 TCU improved to 8-0 after a 41-31 victory at West Virginia. Max Duggan threw three touchdown passes and Kendre Miller ran for 120 yards and a score for the Horned Frogs. TCU didn't need a comeback from a double-digit deficit like it did in its two previous games. Duggan staked TCU to a 28-21 halftime lead and that held up. But West Virginia gave the Horned Frogs a fight. JT Daniels threw a 23-yard TD pass to Reese Smith with 4:12 left to cut the Mountaineers' deficit to 34-31. But Duggan found Savion Williams with a 29-yard scoring toss on fourth down with 20 seconds left.

Tuimoloau shines as No. 2 Ohio St beats No. 13 Penn St 44-31

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — J.T. Tuimoloau had a strip sack that set up No. 2 Ohio State for a separation-score in the fourth quarter and then a pick-6 to cap a spectacular performance by the defensive end as the Buckeyes beat No. 13 Penn State 44-31. C.J. Stroud passed for 354 yards and the Buckeyes extended their winning streak in the rivalry to six in a row. The Nittany Lions went up 21-16 with 9:26 remaining in the fourth quarter on a tough 1-yard touchdown run by Kaytron Allen on fourth down. Ohio State outscored Penn State 28-3 the rest of the way with Tuimoloau in the center of the rally.

Schwarber's 2 big swings go 756 feet, get Phillies nothing

HOUSTON (AP) — Kyle Schwarber had big swings on consecutive pitches for the Philadelphia Phillies when they needed a comeback in Game 2 of the World Series. But two drives that totaled 756 feet in the eighth inning didn't result in a much-needed home run. The Phillies go home even in the World Series after their 5-2 loss to the Houston Astros on Saturday night. The first ball off Schwarber's bat was ruled foul after a replay review — the slugger had already trotted around the bases. When Schwarber got back in the box, he hit a ball that was caught at the right-field wall.

Sports Headlines for Sunday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson overcame a slow start Saturday night against Highland (2-7, 1-6) to remain perfect on the season.&nbsp;

Hutchinson missed a couple of opportunities early, namely when reigning offensive player of the week Treymon Echols dropped a sure-touchdown pass from Dylan Laible in the first quarter.

Echols had the defense beat and dropped the ball.&nbsp;

The game was scoreless after one quarter.&nbsp;

The Dragons (8-0, 5-0) finally got on the board early in the second quarter on a Dylan Kedzior one-yard rush.&nbsp;

The score came after a Walter Bob Jr. interception. The defensive lineman stepped in front of a screen pass and returned the ball to the Highland 28. Hutchinson used six plays to take the 7-0 advantage.

Less than five minutes later, the Dragons got on the board again after a one-yard run. This time, quarterback Dylan Laible powered forward for just his third career rushing touchdown, his second in as many weeks.

For just the second time this season, however, Laible was also intercepted. A third-quarter shot to the end zone was intercepted by Travis McNichols.

Hutchinson took a 14-0 advantage into the locker room thanks to a defensive stand to end the second frame. Highland marched down to the Dragon one and faced 3rd and 1 before Rodney Roane tackled running back Kason Jones for a three-yard loss.

Highland called timeout with just one second left before the break. On 4th and 1, holder Grant Sillyman mishandled the snap and ran for his life around the left side of the defense. Ja'Mez Drummer quickly stopped Sillyman in his tracks and the half came to a close.

"What a great stop at the end of the first half," Drew Dallas said of his defense.

"Highland's played a lot of people tough this year," Dallas said. "They're doing some really good things schematically."

Highland is under first-year head coach Jared Powers. While Powers has concern for his team's depth, he knows his first-string players have the ability to match anybody in the conference, or the NJCAA for that matter.

The Scotties lost to current-No. 2 Iowa Western 24-7, a score much closer than poll voters expected of a team that began the season 0-5. The Scotties lost to Garden City 14-6 before winning two of their last three games.

Hutchinson opened things up enough in the second half to allow Dylan Laible more time off. The Dragons career leader in touchdown passes has enjoyed the luxury of calling it a day in his last three outings.

Laible threw 14 0f 28 for 150 yards with one TD and one INT. He was sacked three times.

"Not pretty by our standards," Dallas said of the first half. But he credited his coaching staff for making the necessary adjustments.

Dallas said some of the adjustments came up front with the offensive line. The line had cleared a path in the last four games for running back Dylan Kedzior. In those four contests, Kedzior ran for 578 yards. He was bottled up for 66 yards Saturday, but still managed to find the end zone. He now has a five-game touchdown streak.

Tim Byrd Jr. finally found some running room in the fourth quarter. After the game was in hand, Byrd Jr. broke off a 64-yard run to the Highland seven. He took the ball to pay dirt the very next play to finish the day with 110 yards rushing on six carries.

Hutchinson built a 24-0 advantage in the second half thanks to a Micah Woods 30-yard touchdown snag from Laible and a 39-yard Cole Segraves field goal.

Highland found the end zone with 1:24 to play when quarterback Tysan Robbins found Ja'Vonte Williams for the 20-yard score. Robbins finished 17 of 34 with the one TD and two INTs. He was sacked twice. Williams caught six passes for 101 yards and the score.

The Dragons captured the KJCCC conference title for the third straight season with the win. And the 10th time in it's 90 year history.

Hutchinson has now won 14 games straight, dating back to last season. This is the second-longest winning streak in program history, tied with a run from 1968-1970.Hutchinson is 24-0 against Highland all-time in Gowans Stadium.

The Dragon defense allowed just 69 rushing yards, but surrendered 247 passing yards. Highland put the ball on the turf six times, but Hutchinson only capitalized on two opportunities. The Dragons came away with two interceptions (Walter Bob Jr. and Terrente Hinton).

Hutchinson returns home next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff against Independence (3-4, 2-2). The Pirates were on a bye week Saturday.

The defensive lineman stepped in front of a screen pass and returned the ball to the Highland 28. Hutchinson used six plays to take the 7-0 advantage.Less than five minutes later, the Dragons got on the board again after a one-yard run. This time, quarterback Dylan Laible powered forward for just his third career rushing touchdown, his second in as many weeks.For just the second time this season, however, Laible was also intercepted. A third-quarter shot to the end zone was intercepted by Travis McNichols.Hutchinson took a 14-0 advantage into the locker room thanks to a defensive stand to end the second frame. Highland marched down to the Dragon one and faced 3rd and 1 before Rodney Roane tackled running back Kason Jones for a three-yard loss.Highland called timeout with just one second left before the break. On 4th and 1, holder Grant Sillyman mishandled the snap and ran for his life around the left side of the defense. Ja'Mez Drummer quickly stopped Sillyman in his tracks and the half came to a close."What a great stop at the end of the first half," Drew Dallas said of his defense."Highland's played a lot of people tough this year," Dallas said. "They're doing some really good things schematically."Highland is under first-year head coach Jared Powers. While Powers has concern for his team's depth, he knows his first-string players have the ability to match anybody in the conference, or the NJCAA for that matter.The Scotties lost to current-No. 2 Iowa Western 24-7, a score much closer than poll voters expected of a team that began the season 0-5. He was bottled up for 66 yards Saturday, but still managed to find the end zone. He now has a five-game touchdown streak.Tim Byrd Jr. finally found some running room in the fourth quarter. After the game was in hand, Byrd Jr. broke off a 64-yard run to the Highland seven. MANHATTAN — Will Howard threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns, Deuce Vaughn ran for 158 yards and another score, and No. 22 Kansas State dealt ninth-ranked Oklahoma State its first shutout loss since 2009 with a 48-0 victory Saturday.

Kade Warner caught five passes for 97 yards and two scores, and Malik Knowles had eight catches for 113 yards, while a late interception gave the Wildcats (6-2, 4-1 Big 12) their first shutout of the Cowboys since a 10-0 win on Nov. 21, 1992.

Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders was just 13 of 26 for 147 yards with an interception before landing hard on his shoulder midway through the fourth quarter. The star quarterback did not return to the game.

Kansas State scored touchdowns on its first two possessions, finished with 495 yards of total offense and held Oklahoma State (6-2, 3-2), which had been the nation's No. 3 scoring offense at 44.7 points per game, to just 217 yards.

The Cowboys' most lopsided loss in nearly 18 seasons under coach Mike Gundy was also their first shutout loss to anyone since Nov. 28, 2009, when they lost 27-0 to Oklahoma in the Bedlam game.

The Wildcats have had some strangely easy wins over Oklahoma State. The last time a Gundy team was held to 12 points or fewer was in a 31-12 loss in Manhattan in 2018, and the last time the Cowboys trailed any game by at least 38 points was during a 48-14 loss to the Wildcats in 2014.

The biggest question surrounding Kansas State was the health of its own quarterback, Adrian Martinez, who played just four snaps in last week's loss to TCU because of a knee injury. And while he warmed up with the starters Saturday, it was the veteran backup Howard who headed out to the field on the opening possession of the game.

Howard proceeded to torture the banged-up Cowboys defense for the next 30 minutes. He capped the opening drive by hitting Warner on fourth-and-10 for a 38-yard TD reception. Then, after Vaughn ripped off a 62-yard touchdown run, Howard threw a 31-yard third-down scoring strike to Phillip Brooks to make it 21-0.

Howard's fourth TD throw, also to Warner and also on third down, traveled about 10 yards through the air on a screen, but ended up going for 41 yards. And the final touchdown of the half, after Oklahoma State had stuffed Kansas State twice at the goal line, was a quick out to Vaughn with just 11 seconds left before halftime.

Meanwhile, the prolific Cowboys offense couldn't answer any of them.

Their opening drive ended on fourth down when Sanders threw incomplete. The next ended in a punt, and the next when Oklahoma State wide receiver Brennan Presley fumbled the ball away on the first play. The Cowboys punted twice more in the half around an interception, when Sanders overthrew everyone over the middle but the Kansas State defense.

The Wildcats not only led 35-0 at the break, they controlled the ball nearly two-thirds of the half and had a 350-112 edge in total offense. Howard had thrown for 224 yards, Vaughn had run for 121 and Warner had 97 yards receiving.

The only question in the second half was whether the Wildcats would keep the Cowboys off the scoreboard.

Oklahoma State had won eight of its past 10 against ranked opponents, and the losses were by five last year to Baylor in by three in double-overtime to TCU earlier this season. But the Cowboys never put up a fight against Kansas State, even though the winner would have the inside track on a possible rematch with the Horned Frogs in the Big 12 title game.

Kansas State celebrated its first home game in 28 days by ending a three-game skid against the Cowboys in confidence-building fashion. It dominated on both sides of the ball, and on special teams, nearly got a punt return touchdown.

Oklahoma State heads down Interstate 70 to face Kansas next Saturday.

York Mets outfielder Mookie Wilson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpyJjecJnuI">skipping through the legs</a> of Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner.

Some of the most dramatic images in World Series history are 
ingrained in the minds of baseball fans thanks to television coverage. 
This year’s World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston 
Astros will surely bring another timeless highlight to the <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/03/2021-world-series-ratings-braves-astros-game-6-draws-14point3-million.html">12 million or so viewers</a> expected to watch.

Yet the first 43 World Series weren’t televised at all. It wasn’t 
until the 1947 series between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers –
 75 years ago – that fans could watch their favorite players duke it out
 on screen. 

As I detail in my book “<a href="https://www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/bison-original/9780803248250/">Center Field Shot: A History of Baseball on Television</a>,”
 which I co-authored with Robert Bellamy, the telecasts became a 
sensation. They drew millions of Americans to a new medium at a time 
when there were no national networks, only a handful of stations and 
somewhere between 50,000 and 60,000 TVs in the entire country.

In August 1947, the television industry anticipated a possible 
all-New York World Series: The Yankees had a huge lead in the American 
League, while the Dodgers also held a substantial one in the National 
League.  

If the two teams met in October, New York’s three television stations – run by NBC ABC, and the now-extinct <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/DuMont-Television-Network">DuMont</a> – decided they wanted to cover the games.

But the rights to televise the games were held by the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Mutual-Broadcasting-System">Mutual Broadcasting System</a>,
 a radio network that had no television division. Thus, Mutual would 
need to farm out the coverage to one or more New York stations.

Although no national television network existed at the time, NBC, 
DuMont and CBS did have the means to link stations on the Eastern 
Seaboard through a combination of coaxial cable, microwave and 
over-the-air broadcast transmissions, expanding the potential audience 
for the World Series. The Series would air on eight stations in four 
markets: New York City, Philadelphia, Washington and Schenectady, New 
York.

While the Yankees-Dodgers series materialized, the televising of the Series almost didn’t. 

The predictable stumbling block was money. Baseball commissioner <a href="https://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/chandler-happy">Albert B. “Happy” Chandler</a>
 wanted $100,000 for the television rights to the Series. Gillette, the 
sponsor of the radio coverage on the Mutual Broadcasting System, balked 
at the steep price given television’s limited penetration – only 50,000 
to 60,000 U.S. households owned TVs at the time. The radio rights to 
reach the nation’s 29 million homes with radios had cost Mutual only 
$175,000.

Initial negotiations produced an offer of $60,000 from two sponsors: Gillette and the Ford Motor Company. New York’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Liebmann">Liebmann Breweries</a>
 offered to meet Chandler’s $100,000 demand, but the commissioner 
refused because he did not want beer ads when youngsters would be 
prominent members of the audience.

Even before a coverage deal had been finalized, bars, restaurants, 
television dealers, department stores, automobile dealerships and movie 
theaters started advertising the event, urging customers to come by to 
watch the World Series on television. And in the days and weeks leading 
up to the Fall Classic, the demand for television sets spiked. 

The excitement pressured Chandler and the sponsors to reach a compromise.   

Finally, on Sept. 26, just four days before Game 1 at Yankee Stadium, Chandler, Gillette and Ford <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-BC/BC-1947/1947-10-06-BC.pdf">agreed to $65,000 for the rights to televise the World Series</a>.
 Production costs added another $35,000 to the sponsors’ bill. Mutual, 
Gillette and Ford also agreed to allow all three New York TV stations 
and those connected to them to broadcast the game, providing the widest 
possible exposure.

Initial industry estimates had the Series reaching between 600,000 
and 700,000 viewers, many of them located in the bars and restaurants 
where a substantial number of the nation’s first television receivers 
were located.  

But that forecast ended up being conservative. Although home viewing for the seven games was substantial – 450,000 in a <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-18.pdf">Hooper rating survey commissioned by Billboard</a>
 – the out-of-home viewing numbers were extraordinary: Another 3.5 
million were estimated to have viewed the World Series in public 
locales.

Hooper’s survey found that an average of 82 customers showed up at 
each of these public locations to watch at least some of the World 
Series. Variety reported that bar owners saw a 500% increase in patrons 
during the Series, with some offering reservations to their regulars for
 a choice location near the TV set.

What viewers from those choice seats saw was primitive by today’s 
standards. The screen was usually small – 12 diagonal inches or less. 
The low-definition images were black and white and came from just a few 
cameras. No extreme close-ups were possible. There was no instant 
replay, so fans had to pay attention or the moment was lost. 

But for the first time, they were seeing the World Series live, and for free.

The audience liked what they saw. <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-11.pdf">Billboard</a>,
 quoting The Newark Evening News, reported that TV “audiences hung on 
every turn of the video cameras and the ‘oohs and aahs’ at a slide or 
strikeout were something radio broadcasters would give their eye teeth 
to hear.”

It didn’t hurt that <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/1947_WS.shtml">the 1947 World Series</a> ended up being so dramatic. The Yankees prevailed in seven games, but Brooklyn owned the two greatest moments.

In the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4, Dodgers pitch hitter <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWjpOAy5zCM">Cookie Lavagetto ended Yankee starter Bill Biven’s no-hit bid</a> with a two-out hit, driving in two runs and sending the Dodgers to a 3-2 win. Then, in Game 6, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SrtxVs8uMI">Al Gionfriddo’s stunning catch of Joe DiMaggio’s deep drive to left field</a> helped preserve an 8-6 Dodgers victory, leading legendary Dodgers broadcaster <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Red_Barber.html?id=lWhgEAAAQBAJ">Red Barber</a> to exclaim, “Oh, Doctor!”

The Washington broadcasts even reached the White House, where 
President Harry S. Truman, his staff and the D.C. press corps watched 
some of the contests. The <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Televiser/Televiser-1947-09-10.pdf">industry magazine Televiser</a>
 reported an enthusiastic response from the White House viewers: “If TV 
can do as good a job as that on perhaps the most difficult of all 
subjects to televise, then it really has arrived.”

The public’s embrace of the World Series on television, along with 
the generous coverage of the telecasts by the press, provided an 
important boost to the nascent television industry. The Sporting News 
reported that the first televised World Series increased sales for new 
receivers in New York to levels not seen since the early days of radio. 
Similar reports came from dealers in Washington and Philadelphia.

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Sarnoff">David Sarnoff</a>,
 chairman of RCA – which owed NBC and was a leading manufacturer of 
receivers – regarded television’s coverage of baseball and its crowning 
event, the World Series, as one of the most important factors in 
triggering the growth of the new medium.

Television makers, <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Center_Field_Shot.html?id=6kPQhpS-X8YC">he concluded</a>,
 “had to have baseball games and if [baseball owners] had demanded 
millions for the rights, we would have had to give it to them.”

The television industry eventually did pay millions and then billions for those rights. <a href="https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Daily/Issues/2018/11/15/Media/MLB-Fox.aspx">Fox’s latest seven-year contract</a>, including rights to the World Series, pays Major League Baseball $5.1 billion.

Happy Chandler’s 1947 demand for a $100,000 seems like quite a bargain today.

sponsor of the radio coverage on the Mutual Broadcasting System, balked 
at the steep price given television’s limited penetration – only 50,000 
to 60,000 U.S. households owned TVs at the time. The radio rights to 
reach the nation’s 29 million homes with radios had cost Mutual only 
$175,000. Initial negotiations produced an offer of $60,000 from two sponsors: Gillette and the Ford Motor Company. New York’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Liebmann">Liebmann Breweries</a>
 offered to meet Chandler’s $100,000 demand, but the commissioner 
refused because he did not want beer ads when youngsters would be 
prominent members of the audience.Even before a coverage deal had been finalized, bars, restaurants, 
television dealers, department stores, automobile dealerships and movie 
theaters started advertising the event, urging customers to come by to 
watch the World Series on television. And in the days and weeks leading 
up to the Fall Classic, the demand for television sets spiked. The excitement pressured Chandler and the sponsors to reach a compromise. Finally, on Sept. 26, just four days before Game 1 at Yankee Stadium, Chandler, Gillette and Ford <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-BC/BC-1947/1947-10-06-BC.pdf">agreed to $65,000 for the rights to televise the World Series</a>.
 Production costs added another $35,000 to the sponsors’ bill. Mutual, 
Gillette and Ford also agreed to allow all three New York TV stations 
and those connected to them to broadcast the game, providing the widest 
possible exposure.<h2>An unexpectedly strong response</h2>Initial industry estimates had the Series reaching between 600,000 
and 700,000 viewers, many of them located in the bars and restaurants 
where a substantial number of the nation’s first television receivers 
were located. But that forecast ended up being conservative. Although home viewing for the seven games was substantial – 450,000 in a <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-18.pdf">Hooper rating survey commissioned by Billboard</a>
 – the out-of-home viewing numbers were extraordinary: Another 3.5 
million were estimated to have viewed the World Series in public 
locales. Hooper’s survey found that an average of 82 customers showed up at 
each of these public locations to watch at least some of the World 
Series. Variety reported that bar owners saw a 500% increase in patrons 
during the Series, with some offering reservations to their regulars for
 a choice location near the TV set.What viewers from those choice seats saw was primitive by today’s 
standards. The screen was usually small – 12 diagonal inches or less. 
The low-definition images were black and white and came from just a few 
cameras. No extreme close-ups were possible. There was no instant 
replay, so fans had to pay attention or the moment was lost. But for the first time, they were seeing the World Series live, and for free.<h2>The TV industry’s World Series bump</h2>The audience liked what they saw. <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-11.pdf">Billboard</a>,
 quoting The Newark Evening News, reported that TV “audiences hung on 
every turn of the video cameras and the ‘oohs and aahs’ at a slide or 
strikeout were something radio broadcasters would give their eye teeth 
to hear.” It didn’t hurt that <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/1947_WS.shtml">the 1947 World Series</a> ended up being so dramatic. The Yankees prevailed in seven games, but Brooklyn owned the two greatest moments.In the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4, Dodgers pitch hitter <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWjpOAy5zCM">Cookie Lavagetto ended Yankee starter Bill Biven’s no-hit bid</a> with a two-out hit, driving in two runs and sending the Dodgers to a 3-2 win. Then, in Game 6, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SrtxVs8uMI">Al Gionfriddo’s stunning catch of Joe DiMaggio’s deep drive to left field</a> helped preserve an 8-6 Dodgers victory, leading legendary Dodgers broadcaster <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Red_Barber.html?id=lWhgEAAAQBAJ">Red Barber</a> to exclaim, “Oh, Doctor!”<figure>

President Harry S. Truman, his staff and the D.C. press corps watched 
some of the contests. The <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Televiser/Televiser-1947-09-10.pdf">industry magazine Televiser</a>
 reported an enthusiastic response from the White House viewers: “If TV 
can do as good a job as that on perhaps the most difficult of all 
subjects to televise, then it really has arrived.” The public’s embrace of the World Series on television, along with 
the generous coverage of the telecasts by the press, provided an 
important boost to the nascent television industry. The Sporting News 
reported that the first televised World Series increased sales for new 
receivers in New York to levels not seen since the early days of radio. 
Similar reports came from dealers in Washington and Philadelphia.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Sarnoff">David Sarnoff</a>,
 chairman of RCA – which owed NBC and was a leading manufacturer of 
receivers – regarded television’s coverage of baseball and its crowning 
event, the World Series, as one of the most important factors in 
triggering the growth of the new medium. Television makers, <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Center_Field_Shot.html?id=6kPQhpS-X8YC">he concluded</a>,
 “had to have baseball games and if [baseball owners] had demanded 
millions for the rights, we would have had to give it to them.” The television industry eventually did pay millions and then billions for those rights. <a href="https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Daily/Issues/2018/11/15/Media/MLB-Fox.aspx">Fox’s latest seven-year contract</a>, including rights to the World Series, pays Major League Baseball $5.1 billion. SALINA, Kan.-The Hutchinson Salthawk volleyball team dropped their semi-final match with St. Thomas Aquinas 26-24, 23-25 and 25-19 but bounced back in the consolation 3rd place game to defeat Topeka Seaman 25-16, 25-19.

The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons play host to the Highland Scotties for Fall Homecoming 2022. Kickoff is scheduled for seven p.m.

A lot has happened since the Blue Dragons last played in front of the home fans:

+ Two decisive road victories over Dodge City and Garden City.

+ The Dragons moved into the No. 1 slot in the NJCAA Rankings for the third time in program history.

+ Quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/laible_dylan_elo2">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;became the program's career leader in passing yards, reaching the 5,000-yard mark last week against Garden City.

+ The Dragons extended their win streak to 13 games, the third longest in program history.

A victory over Highland tonight would match the second-longest win streak in the program's 90-year history of 14 games. That was achieved from the 1968 through 1970 seasons.

Also, one more milestone could be reached Saturday as Blue Dragon sophomore receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/benson_malik_obrm">Malik Benson</a>&nbsp;is just 21 yards from surpassing Cordarrelle Patterson for the Blue Dragon career receiving yards record. Benson comes into tonight's game with 1,812 yards.

The Blue Dragons also tied a school record with five interceptions against Garden City in a 65-7 win over the Broncbusters last week.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/morris_ja-maric_ynua">Ja'Maric Morris</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/thomas_jalik_t0ea">Jalik Thomas</a>&nbsp;both had Pick-6's in the game and a third touchdown return was called back on a penalty. The Dragons held Garden to a minus-3 yards rushing.

Highland, which started the season with five-straight losses, has won 2 of its last 3 games entering Saturday night. Last week, Highland traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to take on McDougle Tech and came away with a 41-9 victory. The Scotties had a season-high 358 total yards, including 172 rushing yards.

Last season, the Blue Dragons defeated Highland twice - 20-7 in the regular-season meeting at Highland and 77-0 at Gowans Stadium in the opening-round of the Jayhawk Conference Playoffs.

The Blue Dragons are 23-0 all-time against Highland at Gowans Stadium. In 2011, the Dragons set a national single-game scoring record vs. Highland, amassing 90 points.
