There are six Big 12 teams playing their conference openers this weekend. Kansas State is at sixth-ranked Oklahoma on Saturday. The Sooners are playing their first Big 12 game for coach Brent Venables. They have won their last 10 home games and 28 of 29. The lone loss was to K-State two years ago. No. 17 Baylor is at Iowa State, and No. 22 Texas plays at Texas Tech in the other Big 12 openers. Kansas is 3-0 going into a home game against 3-0 Duke. The Jayhawks last won more than three games in the same season in 2009.

Some things to watch in Week 4 of the Big 12 season, with six teams playing their conference openers:

Kansas State at No. 6 Oklahoma. This would have been a matchup of undefeated teams if the Wildcats hadn't gotten upset as a two-touchdown favorite at home against Tulane in their non-conference finale. But K-State (2-1) has still been impressive on defense (allowing 276 total yards and 9.7 points a game), and had recent success against the Sooners.

Oklahoma (3-0), playing its first Big 12 game for coach Brent Venables, has won its last 10 home games and 28 of 29 — the lone loss was to Kansas State two years ago. The Wildcats beat Oklahoma in each of coach Chris Klieman's first two seasons (48-41 in 2019 and 38-35 in 2020) before two crucial replay reviews went against them in the second half of last year's 37-31 loss.

The Sooners have more Big 12 championships (14) than home losses (11) since 1999. Three of those losses are to K-State.

Both 3-0, the surprising Jayhawks and the Blue Devils are among 33 unbeaten teams left in major college football. Kansas hasn't won more than three games in a single season since 2009, when a 5-0 start was followed by seven consecutive losses. Duke last started 4-0 in 2018, its last winning season.

Iowa State is looking for its first 4-0 start since 2000. The Cyclones, who host No. 17 Baylor (2-1) in a conference opener for both teams, have won 11 consecutive Big 12 home games — the longest active home winning streak in the league. ... Texas Tech is playing its third consecutive Top 25 opponent, hosting No. 22 Texas following its loss last week at No. 16 North Carolina State. First-year TCU coach Sonny Dykes is now trying to stop a short streak he began on the other side of the Dallas-Fort Worth rivalry that will be played for the 101st time Saturday. Caleb Hamilton drove in the only run for the Twins, who limp home to wrap up the season having lost 17 of their last 20 road games.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Brendan Donovan hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to lead Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory against the San Diego Padres, snapping a three-game losing streak. Pujols remained at 698 career homers, although he did drive two balls to deep left field, one for a single and one for an out on the warning track. The next stop in his pursuit of the 700-homer club is Dodger Stadium, where the NL Central-leading Cardinals open a three-game series on Friday. Manny Machado hit his 30th homer for the Padres, who had won five in a row.

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge fell a few feet short of a record-tying 61st homer, hitting a 404-foot drive caught just in front of the center field wall, and the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Josh Donaldson’s 10th-inning single to clinch their sixth straight playoff berth. Judge had walked three times and struck out once before he came to the plate with the score tied 4-4 in the ninth. He drove a fastball from Matt Barnes just to the right of straightaway center. The ball left the bat at 113 mph, and fans waited in anticipation as Judge jogged toward first base. But they groaned in unison as Kiké Hernández made the catch a step in front of the fence.

(AP) — After losing Willie Gay Jr. to a four-game suspension for an off-the-field situation earlier this year, the Chiefs are leaning on Darius Harris to fulfill his spot in the middle of their defense on Sunday in Indianapolis. Harris has been an important special teams contributor, but has otherwise shuffled between the 53-man roster and the practice squad during three years in Kansas City. He will be tasked along with Nick Bolton in stopping Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, one of the best in the league at his position.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jacoby Brissett threw two touchdown passes, Nick Chubb ran for a score and the Cleveland Browns bounced back from their epic meltdown four days earlier to beat the rival Pittsburgh Steelers 29-17. The Browns built a nine-point lead early in the fourth on Chubb’s 1-yard run and then held on for dear life. On Sunday, Cleveland blew a 13-point lead in the final two minutes and lost by a point to the New York Jets. The Steelers pulled within 23-17 on Chris Boswell’s 34-yard field goal with 1:48 left but couldn't recover an onside kick. The Browns concluded the game with a meaningless defensive touchdown.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Americans have the stronger team and they looked the part at the Presidents Cup. Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay improved to 5-0 in foursomes. They won the opening match and set the tone. Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth won the next match, and the Americans were on their way. They wound up with a 4-1 lead over an outmanned International team. The lone point for the visitors came from Si Woo Kim and Cameron Davis. Max Homa and Tony Finau won the final hole in the final match to add to the American lead at Quail Hollow.

GENEVA (AP) — Marijuana use is to stay banned at sports events. The World Anti-Doping Agency has resisted calls to change its status on the list of prohibited substances. The agency was asked to review the status of THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, after the case of United States sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson. She did not go to the Tokyo Olympics last year after testing positive at the trials meet where she won the 100 meters. WADA did decide to ban the opiate tramadol from use in competitions starting in January 2024. Tramadol use has been an issue in cycling.

Sports Headlines for Friday

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma coach Brent Venables always has spoken highly of Kansas State, where he played linebacker and got his coaching start as an assistant under Bill Snyder.

He will face the Wildcats as head coach for the first time on Saturday, and he’s focused solely on getting the win for his sixth-ranked Sooners (3-0) in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

“I know I’m the head coach, but getting ready for a game is the same,” Venables said. “I look at the scheme and the DNA more than I do at the logos. All the other dynamic things that are interesting everyone else are not interesting to me, with all due respect.”

He still appreciates what Kansas State did for him, dating all the way back to his playing days in 1991 and 1992 and his time on Snyder's staff from 1993 to 1998.

“I reflect about my opportunities and my relationships all the time,” he said. “When I think about Kansas State, I go back to when I played there, the mentors I had and the wonderful experience I had there in Manhattan. But it’s a long time ago.”

He even spoke to the 82-year-old Snyder after last week’s 49-14 win at Nebraska.

“After the game, he said, ‘Great job getting No. 3, now go get No. 4,’” he said. “Maybe an hour later, he said, ‘Except not this week.’ He must have checked the schedule. He said, ‘Not against us.’ I love the loyalty. No surprise. Amazing man.”

Oklahoma has dominated the Big 12 for years, but the Wildcats defeated the Sooners in 2012, 2014, 2019 and 2020. Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said there’s just a few players left from the 2020 team, so that win doesn’t matter.

“There’s not enough guys from 2020,” he said. “And that was such a strange year. I mean, there was nobody in the stands at all. Some of our guys just being there (in 2020) I think, will help. But it’ll be a different crowd this year.”

Even though Kansas State is coming off a surprising 17 -10 loss to Tulane, Klieman has a positive outlook.

“I know we’re going into a tough situation, guys, as far as coming off a loss and going against Oklahoma, who’s a terrific football team,” he said. “We need to continue to get better and have an opportunity in the fourth quarter to win the game.”

Oklahoma faced Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez when he was at Nebraska last year, and he passed for 289 yards and a touchdown in a 23-16 loss in Norman.

Martinez has passed for 304 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions this season in three games. Klieman said he’s being too careful.

“He would agree that he’s got to cut it loose and rip it,” Klieman said. “And if a mistake’s made, a mistake’s made. But be aggressive in what you see and what you believe. And we’ve seen that in fall camp and now we’ve just got to see it on a Saturday.”

Klieman said linebacker Shawn Robinson stepped away from the team for personal reasons and was not kicked off the team. Robinson never played after transferring from Missouri.

“I’ve got really good respect for that young man, and it was not a bad situation,” Klieman said.

Oklahoma leads the nation with 32 tackles for loss and ranks fourth in sacks under first year coordinator Ted Roof. The Sooners rank 14th nationally in scoring defense, allowing an average of 10 points per game.

“I think our guys, with the level of buy-in, they’re seeing some of the fruits of their labor pay off, as far as creating negative-yardage plays, because, that’s such a big deal in football now,” Roof said.

Kansas State’s Deuce Vaughn ranks 28th nationally in all purpose yards with 129.3 yards per contest. He has rushed for 352 yards and three touchdowns and has 36 yards receiving.

“They get very creative in how they get him the ball,” Roof said. “We have a lot of respect for him. He’s one of the best backs in the nation, and we know it’s a great challenge for our guys.”

Oklahoma’s Marvin Mims ranks 17th nationally with 143.7 all purpose yards per game. He leads the Sooners with 14 catches for 310 yards and two touchdowns. He also has 118 punt return yards.

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel has passed for 759 yards and seven touchdowns in three games, and he has yet to throw an interception. He's also rushed for 65 yards and two touchdowns, including a 61-yard scoring run against Nebraska.

Tulsa, OK- The Wind Surge finished off the Tulsa Drillers 11-1 on Thursday night as the Surge swept the Drillers in the Divisional series to advance to the Texas League Championship Series where they will play the winner of Frisco/San Antonio.

The Surge struck first as Jair Camargo hit a two-run homer to give Wichita a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Camargo finished three for five with five RBIs in the game.

The Drillers responded in the bottom of the first as Andy Pages hit a sacrifice fly in foul territory and allowed Leonel Valera to score and cut the deficit in half to 2-1.

The Surge added another run in the third inning courtesy of Camargo’s second home run of the night to score Edouard Julien and extend the lead to 4-1.

The Surge scored five runs in the fifth inning as DaShawn Keirsey Jr. hit Wichita’s third homer of the night on a solo shot to right field and Camargo followed with a two-run RBI single. Alex Isola hit a two-out single that scored two more runs and gave the Surge a commanding 8-1 lead.

“Much better version of baseball,” said Royals manager Mike Matheny, who celebrated his 52nd birthday in fine fashion Thursday. “The aim is always to win, but you put a couple of wins together against a team that you haven't had success against and you see the confidence starting to swell.”

The first home sweep of at least three games by the Royals since July 2021 also probably ended the fading playoff hopes of the Twins, who two weeks ago were in the midst of an AL Central race but lost eight of nine on their road trip.

“I mean, to be very frank about it, disappointing and about as low on the scale as you can imagine,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “The baserunners just weren’t there for us. The opportunities weren’t there.”

Minnesota rookie Josh Winder (4-5) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. Caleb Hamilton drove in the only run for the Twins, who limp home to wrap up the season having lost 17 of their last 20 road games.

“You have to continue to play the same way. You have to continue to fight the same way,” Baldelli said.

The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team faces another rugged weekend schedule, but will do so inside the Hutchinson Sports Arena this weekend.

No. 16 Hutchinson and eighth other teams from Kansas, Missouri and Iowa make up the field for the 2022 Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic on Friday and Saturday. Friday matches begin at 10 a.m. and Saturday matches begin at 9 a.m.

The 2022 Blue Dragon Classic field features four nationally ranked teams – No. 16 Hutchinson, No. 2 Indian Hills, No. 8 Trinity Valley and No. 17 Mineral Area. Both Butler and MSU-West Plains are receiving votes in this week’s NJCAA Rankings. Jefferson College and Iowa Western started the season in the national rankings. Jayhawk West rival Cloud County is the ninth team in the tournament field.

The Blue Dragons play a pair of nationally ranked opponents and get two rematches in their four matches this weekend.

Hutchinson will open with Jefferson College at 2 p.m. on Friday. The Blue Dragons were swept by then then-No. 12 Vikings on opening weekend at the Reiver Classic in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The Blue Dragons play host to Iowa Western at 6 p.m. on Friday. Also at the Reiver Classic, the Blue Dragons won a five-set thriller with the defending national champions and preseason-No. 1 ranked Reivers in August.

Hutchinson plays No. 8 Trinity Valley at 11 a.m. on Saturday and No. 17 Mineral Area at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons enter the weekend at 17-5 after a four-set victory over Garden City on Wednesday in the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons are 3-5 this season against nationally ranked opponents. The Blue Dragon Classic is Hutchinson’s fourth tournament this season. The Dragons are 8-4 in weekend classics this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It was altogether fitting that on the day the Kansas City Royals fired Dayton Moore, they beat the fast-fading Minnesota Twins using the same blueprint that their longtime front office executive once used to build them into a winner.

Some timely hits, stellar defense in spacious Kauffman Stadium and a shutdown effort by the bullpen.

MJ Melendez homered for the second straight day, but otherwise the Royals had to scratch out just enough runs to support their relief corps, which pieced together five innings of two-hit ball in their 5-2 victory on Wednesday night.

“You'll always have stuff that comes up and today was one of those days, and the conversations we had — you still have to play,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “Play the game really well in a way everybody would be proud of.”

Salvador Perez, one of Moore's most successful signings, had three hits while driving in a run for the sixth straight game, and Bobby Witt Jr. and Edward Oliveras also drove in runs to give the Kansas City bullpen some breathing room.

Anthony Misiewicz (1-1) and three other relievers dazzled in support of Daniel Lynch, while Scott Barlow pitched around an error in the ninth for his second save in two nights and 23rd on the year.

It was the kind of job the Royals once saw out of relievers Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, when the teams Moore put together were winning back-to-back American League pennants and the 2015 World Series title.

“It was just a really impressive job by the bullpen to shut things down,” Matheny said. “Good effort all the way around.”

Bailey Ober (1-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings for Minnesota, which was in an AL Central race two weeks ago but has lost six of seven to begin an eight-game trip that's dashed its playoff hopes.

“The runs are tough to come by right now and you just have to come up with a way,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “We might have one guy that comes out and has a good night, but we need more than that.”

The Royals opened the game the same way they finished the previous night: with production at the top of the order.

Melendez, who hit a two-run homer in the series opener, homered leading off the game for the third time this season, driving a 3-1 pitch an estimated 437 feet to center field. And after Witt reached on a base hit, Perez blooped an RBI double to right that was sneakily reminiscent of his two-out, go-ahead double on Tuesday night.

Minnesota got one back in the second on Matt Wallner's base hit, and when the Royals answered on Oliveras' two-out single in the third, the Twins again closed within a run thanks in part to a two-bag error by Vinnie Pasquantino.

That was it for the Twins, though, because the Kansas City bullpen was downright dominant.

Collin Snider worked around a two-on, no-out jam in the fifth. Misiewicz retired four of the five he faced in the sixth and seventh. Dylan Coleman handled the rest of the seventh and the first two outs of the eighth. And Amir Garrett finished that one off before Barlow wrapped up the Twins' 13th loss in their last 16 games.

“We have some guys that have had to battle through some tired arms,” Matheny said. “We're trying to put them in position where they can pick each other up and they're doing a good job of it.”

Moore said farewell to the Royals during brief remarks at Kauffman Stadium earlier Wednesday and spent an emotional few minutes visiting with players in the clubhouse. Many of them acknowledged the somberness of the moment. Moore had led the organization for the past 16 years as general manager and president of baseball operations.

“He's such a great guy. A great person,” Perez said. “I just old him, ‘Thank you for everything.’ I love him."

Perez played in his 1,245th game, tying Alcides Escobar and Fred Patek for eighth most in Royals history, and his three hits Wednesday night tied a season high.

ARKANSAS CITY – Coming off its first loss of the season, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team earned a huge Jayhawk Conference road victory on Wednesday at No. 17 Cowley College.

Sophomore Hadlie Lowe’s goal with 34:13 remaining in the second half lifted the Blue Dragons to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers at the Cowley Soccer Complex. The Dragons snapped a four-game winless streak over Cowley. Hutchinson’s last win over the Tigers came on 2016.

The Blue Dragons improve to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Jayhawk West. The Tigers drop to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Jayhawk West.

Cowley was the first of four-straight nationally ranked opponents for the Blue Dragons. Up next is No. 15 Coffeyville at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Just a little more than 10 minutes into the second half, Lowe took a long pass from Adriana Delgado and then moved in 1 on 1 against Cowley keeper Kanon Dehama and scored to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead.

⚽️ HutchCC WSCR: Dragons knock off No. 17 Cowley

The No. 16-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team kept pace in the Jayhawk West on Wednesday with a four-set victory over the Garden City Broncbusters at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons had to overcome a strong Garden City block in a 25-17, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19 victory.

Hutchinson improved to 17-5 overall and 5-1 in the Jayhawk West. Garden City dropped to 15-7 and 3-4. The Blue Dragons play four matches this weekend at the Blue Dragon Invitational at the Sports Arena.

Garden City had 14 team blocks and held the Blue Dragons to .160 overall hitting in the match, but Hutchinson had 55 kills to the Busters’ 48. The Blue Dragons also racked up 11 service aces.

Freshman Taniya Golden led the Blue Dragons with 13 kills on .154 hitting. Freshman Alejandra Briseno had 11 kills on .020 hitting and freshman Anna Dean hit .526 with 11 kills on 19 swings. Dean also had one solo block and two block assists. Sophomore Blondie Penaflor had six kills and sophomore Baylee Miller added five kills.

Connor had a season-high 21 digs and a block assist to lead the Blue Dragons defensively. Harvey added 18 digs, while Perrine Blanc and Andrea Serrano added eight digs each. The Dragons had 75 digs for the match.

🏐 HutchCC VB: Dragons earn four-set Jayhawk West win over Garden City

The Hutchinson Community College men’s cross country team is ranked No. 17 in the first United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NJCAA Division I rankings, which were released on Monday.

The Blue Dragon men placed 10th at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic and did not post a team score last week at the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Hutchinson has been ranked in 23 of the last 24 national rankings dating back to 2017. The highest ranking during that span was No. 2 in Week 2 of 2020.

The Blue Dragons have had two different No. 1 runners in their first two meets of the season. Freshman Douwe Bentsink was the top Hutchinson runner at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic. Hayden Keller paced the Blue Dragons last week in a stacked Greeno/Dirksen field.

The Blue Dragons next compete at the Chili Pepper Classic on Friday, September 30 at Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The Jayhawk Conference is well represented in the national rankings.

Colby, which beat all the Division I teams at the Greeno-Dirksen, is the No. 1 team in the first rankings of the season. Northwest Tech is No. 4, followed by Butler at No. 9, Cloud County at No. 13 and Garden City at No. 18.
