Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/fery_perline_iyqs">Perline Fery</a>&nbsp;made her first career start a memorable one by leading the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team to a postseason victory.

Fery had a career-high 12 kills to lead the Blue Dragons to a 25-21, 25-19, 25-12 victory over the Cloud County Thunderbirds in the opening round of the Region VI Tournament on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons (26-11) advance to the Region VI semifinals on Friday in Liberal. Hutchinson will face Jayhawk West co-champion Butler, who fought off two match points against in the fifth set to defeat Colby 17-15 in the final set. Hutchinson and Butler will play one hour after the conclusion of the Seward County/Dodge City match, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Greenhouse in Liberal.

The Blue Dragons advance to the Region VI semifinals for the second time in three seasons under head coach Delice Downing. The Dragons will bid for their first trip to the Region VI finals since 2018. Friday's semifinal will be the 20th time since 2000 the Dragons have advanced as far as the Region VI Tournament semifinals.

Fery hit a season's best .500 in her first career start with 12 kills on 22 attacks and only one error. She got stronger and the match progressed. Fery had two kills on .500 hitting in the opening set. She had four kills on .333 hitting in the second set and exploded in the third set with six kills on nine swings for a .667 attack percentage.

Fery's performance helped the Blue Dragons hit .364 for the match, the third time in as many meetings against Cloud County that the Blue Dragons hit better than .300 as a team. The Blue Dragons out-blocked Cloud County 11-3 and out-dug the Thunderbirds 40-28.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason and Director of Athletics Curtis Hammeke announced on Wednesday the addition of Women's Wrestling as a varsity sport in Athletics, set to begin competition in 2024-25. With the addition of the program, Fort Hays State will have 17 intercollegiate athletic programs (nine women's, eight men's).

Men's and women's soccer were the last sports added to the intercollegiate athletic programs offered at Fort Hays State University, which began competition in 2011 after being announced in 2010. The search for a head coach of the program begins immediately. Once hired, the coach will have at least a year to recruit and build a roster for competition. Fort Hays State will be the first NCAA school in Kansas to offer the sport as a varsity program in Athletics. FHSU will also be the first school in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) to add the sport. There are currently six women's wrestling programs at the collegiate level in Kansas right now, which includes National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) members Baker University, Central Christian College, Friends University, Ottawa University, and University of Saint Mary, and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) member Northwest Kansas Technical College. Women's wrestling is currently an NCAA Emerging Sport. There are currently 63 women's wrestling programs at NCAA member institutions either established or in the process of being added aside from the announcement by FHSU today, which includes four NCAA Division I schools, 25 NCAA Division II schools, and 34 NCAA Division III schools. Currently, all three NCAA divisions are part of the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC), which completed its third year of holding the NCWWC National Championships in 2022. McKendree University (Ill.), which is an NCAA Division II affiliate, has won the national team title all three years of the championship's existence. Last year, 40 teams competed in four regional qualifiers for the NCWWC Championships. The NAIA will hold its inaugural Women's Wrestling Championship in 2023. For three years (2020-2022), the organization has held a National Wrestling Invitational and it will transition to championship status this year. Women's wrestling is still an emerging sport at the NJCAA level, like the NCAA. Kansas is one of the fastest growing states in the nation for girls wrestling. Last year, Kansas had over 1,400 participants in girls wrestling at the high school level. This year will mark the fourth year the state activities association will hold a state championship for girls wrestling. HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State University president Tisa Mason announced on Wednesday (Nov. 2) the addition of Women’s Wrestling as a varsity sport in Athletics, set to begin competition in 2024-25. With the addition of the program, Fort Hays State will have 17 intercollegiate athletic programs (nine women’s, eight men’s).

When the 2024-25 academic year comes, Fort Hays State will have three sports during the winter season in which both genders compete including wrestling, basketball, and indoor track and field. Men’s and women’s soccer were the last sports added to the intercollegiate athletic programs offered at Fort Hays State University, which began competition in 2011 after being announced in 2010.

The search for a head coach of the program begins immediately. Once hired, the coach will have at least a year to recruit and build a roster for competition starting during the 2024-25 academic year.

Fort Hays State will be the first NCAA school in Kansas to offer the sport as a varsity program in intercollegiate athletics. FHSU will also be the first school in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) to add the sport. There are currently six women’s wrestling programs at the collegiate level in Kansas right now, which includes National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) members Baker University, Central Christian College, Friends University, Ottawa University, and University of Saint Mary, and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) member Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Women’s wrestling is an NCAA Emerging Sport. There are currently 63 women’s wrestling programs at NCAA member institutions either established or in the process of being added aside from the announcement by FHSU today, which includes four NCAA Division I schools, 25 NCAA Division II schools, and 34 NCAA Division III schools. Currently, all three NCAA divisions are part of the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC), which completed its third year of holding the NCWWC National Championships in 2022. McKendree University (Ill.), which is an NCAA Division II affiliate, has won the national team title all three years of the championship’s existence. Last year, 40 teams competed in four regional qualifiers for the NCWWC Championships.

The NAIA will hold its inaugural Women’s Wrestling Championship in 2023. For three years (2020-2022), the organization has held a National Wrestling Invitational and it will transition to championship status this year. According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) website, there are 42 women’s wrestling schools affiliated with the NAIA. Women’s wrestling is still an emerging sport at the NJCAA level, like the NCAA.

Kansas is one of the fastest growing states in the nation for girls wrestling. Last year, Kansas had over 1,400 participants in girls wrestling at the high school level. This year will mark the fourth year the state activities association will hold a state championship for girls wrestling. All classifications were included in the inaugural state championship three years ago, but there have been two championship classifications with 5-6A classes combined and 1-4A classes combined for the past two years.

The University of Kansas informed the NCAA’s IRP (Independent Resolution Panel) last week that it was self-imposing several sanctions in response to its ongoing basketball case, which originated in 2017. The sanctions include:

“Throughout this process, we have had ongoing conversations with all the involved parties,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod. “We believe the actions we are announcing today move us closer to resolving this matter. We look forward to commenting further when this process is fully resolved. Until then, I want to reiterate our unwavering support of Coach Self and our Men’s Basketball program.”

“We are hopeful these difficult self-imposed sanctions will assist in bringing the case to a conclusion,” KU Director of Athletics Travis Goff said. “Until then, we will continue to focus on supporting our outstanding Men’s Basketball student-athletes and coaches. Assistant Coach Norm Roberts will serve as interim head coach during the first four games. Per confidentiality guidelines related to infraction cases, we are unable to comment in depth until there is full resolution of this matter.”

“Coach Townsend and I accept and support KU’s decision to self-impose these sanctions,” Self said. “We are in good hands with Coach Roberts, and I am confident that he will do a great job on the bench leading our team. I am proud of the way our guys have handled this situation and I look forward to returning to the bench for our game against NC State.”&nbsp;

Impressive start propels K-State past Washburn in exhibition 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Threes, threes everywhere.

No. 13 Hutchinson (1-0) knocked down 18 triples en route to scoring 124 points against the Fort Scott Greyhounds Tuesday night in the Sports Arena.

Returner Jayden Garrison of Little River hit 7 of 11 three-point attempts and finished with a game-high 29. Garrison made 9 of 13 overall from the field.

Aaron Franklin played just four games last year before getting injured. He scored 28 on the night and pulled in eight rebounds.

Kernan Bundy was the only other Dragon in double-digit scoring, but 13 of the 14 Dragons that played scored at least two points.

Jackson Leyba and Ty Frierson each notched nine points.

Baker Beal led the way for Fort Scott with his 33 points, while his teammate, Clance Crosby, added a double-double (24 points and 11 rebounds).

FINAL: Hutchinson 124 Fort Scott 101

Hutchinson hit 36.7% from distance and shot 46.8% from the floor overall.

Hutchinson shot the ball 94 times, compared to Fort Scott's 65.

The Greyhounds shot 53.8% overall, but made just 1 of 8 three-point attempts.

Franklin and Garrison combined for 13 of 22 from beyond the arc. Both players hit back-to-back treys on separate occasions in the game.

HUTCHINSON, Kan — The No. 9 Blue Dragons (1-0) opened the season Tuesday night in the Sports Arena against the Bethany College JV.

Hutchinson led by just nine after one quarter of action.

A 13-0 run to start the second quarter kicked things into gear as Hutchinson rolled to an 88-44 victory.

Mya Williams led the Blue Dragons with 21 points on 8 of 17 shooting. She knocked down three triples.

Hutchinson got another 19 from newcomer Monae Duffy. She also pulled down six rebounds.

Returner Kali Howard finished with a double-double, 11 points and 10 boards.

Hutchinson shot 48% from the floor and held Bethany to 25.8%. Bethany made just 5 of 26 three-point attempts (19.2%).

The Dragons lost the ball just 10 times while forcing the Swedes into 21 turnovers.

The Dragons assisted on 22 of 36 made baskets. Six Dragons notched three assists each (Armstead, Duffy, Williams, Johnson, Horyna and Te Nana-Williams).

Kassi Ballard paced Bethany with 13 points.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Coming off a performance that saw him register 176 total yards and two touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 48-0 win over No. 9 Oklahoma State, Kansas State running back&nbsp;Deuce Vaughn&nbsp;was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Vaughn finished the game with 158 rushing yards – which included a 62-yard touchdown – while he hauled in four passes for 18 yards, including a one-yard touchdown catch with seven seconds left before halftime.

It was Vaughn’s fifth 100-yard rushing game this season to tie for ninth in school history, while it was the 17th&nbsp;in his 31-game career. During the contest against the Cowboys, Vaughn moved into third place in school history in career rushing yards (2,948) and career all-purpose yards (4,125), into a tie for fifth place in career rushing touchdowns (30), from outside the top-10 to sixth place in career rushing attempts (512) and into 10th&nbsp;place in career points scored (222).

Vaughn, who is the fourth fastest player nationally since 1996 with 2,500 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a career, is just 52 rushing yards away from hitting the 3,000-yard rushing mark. If he were to accomplish it this week against Texas – his 32nd-career game – he would tie Saquan Barkley (Penn State) and Jeremy McNichols (Boise State) for the fastest since 1996 to hit 3,000 yards on the ground and 1,000 yards through the air.

When Tommy DeSalme was named head coach of the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team before the 2021-22 season, he promised a fast-paced style of play.

DeSalme delivered on that promise and Blue Dragon fans noticed.

So what does the second-year head coach of the Blue Dragons have in mind for 2022-23?

"I'm really excited about our 2022-23 Blue Dragons," said DeSalme, whose team opens the season at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Fort Scott at the Sports Arena. "We hope to be the fastest-playing team in the country."

DeSalme returns four players from a 26-9 team that was a Jayhawk Conference and Region VI runner-up and made it to the second round of the NJCAA Tournament. That said, the experience level of the Blue Dragons will be less than last season after the loss of several key sophomores and super-sophomores from last season.

Guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/garrison_jayden_ffgr">Jayden Garrison</a>&nbsp;saw the most action last season for the Dragons last season.

Garrison averaged 3.9 points and shot 34.4 percent from 3-point range last season. He will be joined by guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>, who played only five games before being lost for the season with an injury. Franklin averaged 12.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

Also back are guards&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/mcclure_trey_gb8i">Trey McClure</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/frederick_ra-sean_ozi1">Ra'Sean Frederick</a>, who was lost to a season-ending injury during the preseason last year. McClure played in nine games and 31 minutes last season.

"I have been so impressed with our returners' leadership this preseason," DeSalme said. "I feel like we have added a great recruiting class," DeSalme said. We are excited to get the season going with three great games this week at the Arena. I believe the Blue Dragon Fans will have a great time watching and getting to know our newcomers."

Last season, the Blue Dragons led the Jayhawk Conference in scoring 94.2 points per game. The Dragons shot 41.5 percent from the field and 30.6 percent from 3-point range with a team single-season record 321 3-pointers.

The Blue Dragons opened last season with Fort Scott and the Blue Dragons won 122-95.

The Dragons are the preseason pick to win the Jayhawk Conference this this season, according to the KJCCC preseason coaches' poll. The Blue Dragons also open the season at No. 13 in the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball national preseason rankings.

Hutchinson has several strong tests on opening week. After Fort Scott on Tuesday, the Blue Dragons play host to No. 7 Triton and NEO on Friday and Saturday for the BSN Tipoff Classic at the Sports Arena. Game times each night are 7:30 p.m.

When the Hutchinson Community College Women's Basketball Team takes the court for the 2022-23 season opener on Tuesday at the Sports Arena, the expectations for John Ontjes' program will once again be high.

For the head coach of one of the top women's basketball teams in the NJCAA, those expectations are a normal part of daily business.

"Every year exceptions are high," said Blue Dragon head coach John Ontjes, who starts his 16th season on the Hutchinson bench Tuesday night in the Hutchinson Sports Arena against the Bethany College Junior Varsity. "Just like most years it will be important that our sophomores will be great leaders to reach those expectations."

How high are the expectations for the 2022-23 Blue Dragons?

Hutchinson opens the season as the preseason favorite to win a fourth-straight Jayhawk Conference championship, according to the annual KJCCC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Blue Dragons also start No. 9 in the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball national rankings.

Last season, Hutchinson tied Independence for the Jayhawk Conference championship and then won the Region VI Tournament. The Blue Dragons finished 29-6 and advanced to the second round of the 2022 NJCAA Tournament.

A major piece of that team returns and will be one of the sophomores Ontjes referenced to lead the Blue Dragons in 2022-23.

First-Team All-American and KJCCC Player and Freshman of the Year&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;is back this season.

Williams led the KJCCC in scoring last season, averaging 18.6 points per game. Williams shot 41.9 percent overall this past season, shooting 37.8 percent from 3-point range and 81.7 percent from the free-throw line. Williams' team-high 83 3-point goals were the fourth most by a freshman and ninth most in Blue Dragon history. Her 148 made free throws were second most in freshman history and fifth most in single-season history.

Williams became the Blue Dragons' all-time freshman leader and was No. 2 all-time in Blue Dragon scoring with 651 total points.

"<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;will be important for us," Ontjes said. "She is a tremendous offensive player and we need her to commit to the defensive side of the game."

Overall, the Blue Dragons return two starters and six overall letter winners from last season.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/payne_natalie_xv8c">Natalie Payne</a>&nbsp;is a returning starting forward Payne averaged 4.5 points and 3.7 rebounds.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/howard_kali_o73g">Kali Howard</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/simms_ziya_ix18">Ziya Simms</a>&nbsp;came off the bench last season for Hutchinson. Howard averaged 4.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Simms averaged 1.8 points and 2.3 rebounds.

The Blue Dragons add sophomore transfer&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/browning_morgan_wxv3">Morgan Browning</a>&nbsp;to the mix this season. Browning is a transfer for Morehead State. She played in 28 games and started 23 last season and averaged 3.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. She had a career-high 10 points against Tennessee State.

As far as the freshmen, out-of-state guards&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/armstead_journey_v4yx">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/duffy_monae_4kqq">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;have played strong in the preseason scrimmages. Liberal product&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/horyna_bree_7gur">Bree Horyna</a>&nbsp;and Dodge City's&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/johnson_camree_rkrn">Camree Johnson</a>&nbsp;are in-state players who are expected to have an impact this season.

"The faster Journey and Monae progress, the better we will become," Ontjes said. "Bree and Camree should also play key roles for us this season."

After opening night on Tuesday, the Blue Dragons will play Mineral Area and NEO in the BSN Tipoff Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Sports Arena. The Dragon open Jayhawk Conference play on November 16 against Independence at the Sports Arena.

Williams' team-high 83 3-point goals were the fourth most by a freshman and ninth most in Blue Dragon history. The Green Bay Packers have announced Jordy Nelson as a 2023 inductee into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.

Nelson is ranked number 4 in team history for reception, with 550 catches; ranked 6th for receiving yards with 7,848 yards. He's ranked third in touchdown receptions with 69 and is fourth in games receiving 100 yards or more with 25 ames.

Nelson is the only player in the team's historical records to record three season with 13 or more Touchdown receptions in 2011, 2014, and 2016.&nbsp;

🏈 Former K-Stater Jordy Nelson inducted to the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Now in his 23rd season as the head coach of the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team, Chris Young took a struggling Division II program and transformed it into a nationally elite NJCAA Division I powerhouse.

Now the leader of the two-time defending NJCAA men’s golf national champion Hutchinson, Young has reached the pinnacle of his profession.

Young is one of four people to be inducted to the 2022 Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame.

The GCAA made the announcement Tuesday morning. Along with Young, former Colorado State and current Louisville head coach Mark Crabtree, Oklahoma Christian coach David Lynn, and TCU head coach Bill Montigel make up the Class of 2022.

The GCAA Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be on December 5 in Las Vegas.

“I am very honored to even be considered for the Hall Of Fame, not to mention being voted into the Hall by my peers,” Young said. “I truly am humbled and blessed by this honor and look forward to being part of such an exclusive bunch.”

Young took over the Blue Dragon men’s golf program in 2000. Before Young’s arrival, the Blue Dragons qualified for the Division II national tournament only once in the previous 13 years.

Young immediately moved the program to the Division I level in 2000. He had the Blue Dragons at nationals in 2001, a 20th-place finish.

The Blue Dragons haven’t missed out on the national tournament since.

Fast-forward to 2021 at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas – the Blue Dragons were in the thick of a national championship chase for the first time. Hutchinson passed that test with flying colors, defeating Odessa by nine strokes. Ben Partridge defeated teammate Harry Crocket in a four-hole playoff to the win individual national championship. Along with Partridge and Crockett, Cameron Rios-Ceballos earned All-America honors.

One year later, the Blue Dragons went wire-to-wire for the second straight year and never looked back for a 20-stroke victory at the Odessa Country Club in Odessa, Texas. The Blue Dragons posted the largest winning margin in nearly 30 years and shot six strokes better than 2021 with a 72-hole total of 1,130.

A record four Blue Dragons earned All-America honors: Dominic Clemons, who lost a two-hole playoff for the individual national title, and Blake Saffell and Partridge were first-team All-Americans. Crockett was a third-team All-American.

“What great honor for Coach Young,” Blue Dragon Athletic Director Josh Gooch said. “Being enshrined into the GCCA is well deserved as coach Young has and continues to be a first-class mentor and coach to all the young men on his teams.&nbsp;

“The success of his coaching career is no surprise to anyone who has spent quality time with him.&nbsp;&nbsp;Coach’s attention to detail from recruiting evaluation, stats analysis, course management along with personal relationships separate him from many others.&nbsp;&nbsp;I am proud to have witnessed all of this first hand and now to see him honored is awesome.”

Even before the last two seasons, Young’s teams have been impressive. Young’s accomplishments include:

+ 10 Jayhawk Conference team championships (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2022);

+ 9 Region VI team championships (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2022);

+ 3 District III team championship (2007, 2009, 2021);

+ 2 NJCAA Individual National Runners-Up;

+ 1 Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year winner;

+ 3 Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year finalist;

+ 2 Phil Mickelson National Outstanding Freshman Award winners;

+ 3 Phil Mickelson National Freshman of the Year finalists;

+ 9 Jayhawk Conference individual league champions;

Before Young took over the Blue Dragon men’s golf program, he served as an assistant coach for the Blue Dragon women’s basketball team for two seasons. The Lady Dragons were 44-20 in those two seasons.

Before coming to Hutch in 1997, Young was at the University of Nebraska where he was an assistant coach for the Husker women’s basketball program under Angela Beck for three years. Nebraska was 51-33 in his three years in Lincoln.

Young is a native of Kearney, Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1993. Young and his wife, Kricket, have three children: Cole, Kennedy and Carter.

Kansas (5-3, 2-3 Big 12) enters Saturday’s contest fresh off two straight road games, followed by an open week. The Jayhawks return home with a 3-1 record at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium this season, with wins against Tennessee Tech, Duke and Iowa State this season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Game 3 of the World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros has been postponed because of rain with the matchup tied 1-1, pushing the entire Fall Classic schedule back one day. The rainout moved Game 3 to Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park, when the weather was supposed to be all clear. Game 4 will now be played Wednesday and Game 5 is set for the scheduled travel day on Thursday night. Game 5 will compete with the NFL game that has, of all teams, the Philadelphia Eagles in Houston against the Texans. There will now be a travel day Friday, with Game 6 has been rescheduled for Saturday and Game 7 would be Sunday. All games will start at 8:03 p.m. ET.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — In the City of Brotherly Love and the undefeated Eagles, Justin Verlander showed the reverse of the first and playfully gave Phillies fans another kind of bird Monday — with his middle finger as he stepped off Houston's team bus.

"Whole interaction was in jest as all the fans around you were just saying hello in their native tongue," Verlander tweeted several hours later. "So I responded in kind ... all in good fun. I enjoyed the banter."

One more finger, of course, than you'd need to count the Astros ace's World Series wins, 0-6 with a 6.07 ERA in eight starts.

Also the number of days Game 3 of the World Series was delayed — postponed by rain with the matchup tied 1-1, pushing the entire Fall Classic schedule back one day.

"We waited long enough that we can see on the radar what's coming," baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said. "We had three, actually four different weather people looking at it. Everyone was consistent about this second wave of rain."

The rainout moved Game 3 to Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park, when the weather was supposed to be all clear and first lady Jill Biden had planned to attend Game 4. There was a smattering of boos at the ballpark when the washout was announced an hour before the scheduled first pitch on Halloween night.

Game 4 will now be played Wednesday and Game 5 is set for the scheduled travel day on Thursday night — Game 5 will compete with the NFL game that has, of all teams, the Philadelphia Eagles in Houston against the Texans.

There will be a travel day on Friday if necessary. That had been the original date of Game 6.

Game 6 has been rescheduled for Saturday and Game 7 would be Sunday. All games will start at 8:03 p.m. ET.

There has not been a World Series day game since 1987, and it appeared there was little discussion about turning Game 5 on Thursday into a late-afternoon start and keep it away from the NFL as it reigns as a ratings juggernaut. The Eagles-Texans game will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The World Series airs on Fox.

"For the World Series, an important consideration for us is having the biggest audience we can possibly get, and that's a prime-time audience. That's the reality," Manfred said. "We think we have a great product that fans want to see. And we're going to put the games on when it makes sense to play the games and hope to get a good audience."

Houston right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. is set to pitch against Phillies lefty Ranger Suárez in Game 3. Noah Syndergaard had been scheduled to start for Philadelphia before the rainout.

"It affects both teams. You just have to turn it off, get a good night's rest and be ready to play tomorrow," Astros manager Dusty Baker said. "It's part of the game. You can't control the weather, so you just deal with it."

Phillies manager Rob Thomson was fine with the decision by Major League Baseball to postpone the game.

"Everybody would rather play in dry conditions. It's going to be fair for everybody," he said.

For fans, tickets that were good for Monday night now become valid for Tuesday's game, when the calendar rolls over to November.

Game 1 starter Aaron Nola will start for the Phillies in Game 4 against Cristian Javier. Either Syndergaard or Kyle Gibson will start Game 5 for the Phils. Game 2 starter Zack Wheeler takes the mound for Game 6 on extra rest, setting up Suárez to start a possible Game 7 in Houston.

All games will start at 8:03 p.m. ET.PHILADELPHIA (AP) — In the City of Brotherly Love and the undefeated Eagles, Justin Verlander showed the reverse of the first and playfully gave Phillies fans another kind of bird Monday — with his middle finger as he stepped off Houston's team bus."Whole interaction was in jest as all the fans around you were just saying hello in their native tongue," Verlander tweeted several hours later. "So I responded in kind ... all in good fun. I enjoyed the banter."One more finger, of course, than you'd need to count the Astros ace's World Series wins, 0-6 with a 6.07 ERA in eight starts.Also the number of days Game 3 of the World Series was delayed — postponed by rain with the matchup tied 1-1, pushing the entire Fall Classic schedule back one day."We waited long enough that we can see on the radar what's coming," baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said. "We had three, actually four different weather people looking at it. Everyone was consistent about this second wave of rain."The rainout moved Game 3 to Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park, when the weather was supposed to be all clear and first lady Jill Biden had planned to attend Game 4. There was a smattering of boos at the ballpark when the washout was announced an hour before the scheduled first pitch on Halloween night.Game 4 will now be played Wednesday and Game 5 is set for the scheduled travel day on Thursday night — Game 5 will compete with the NFL game that has, of all teams, the Philadelphia Eagles in Houston against the Texans.There will be a travel day on Friday if necessary. That had been the original date of Game 6.Game 6 has been rescheduled for Saturday and Game 7 would be Sunday. All games will start at 8:03 p.m. ET.There has not been a World Series day game since 1987, and it appeared there was little discussion about turning Game 5 on Thursday into a late-afternoon start and keep it away from the NFL as it reigns as a ratings juggernaut. The Eagles-Texans game will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The World Series airs on Fox."For the World Series, an important consideration for us is having the biggest audience we can possibly get, and that's a prime-time audience. That's the reality," Manfred said. "We think we have a great product that fans want to see. And we're going to put the games on when it makes sense to play the games and hope to get a good audience."Houston right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. is set to pitch against Phillies lefty Ranger Suárez in Game 3. Noah Syndergaard had been scheduled to start for Philadelphia before the rainout."It affects both teams. You just have to turn it off, get a good night's rest and be ready to play tomorrow," Astros manager Dusty Baker said. "It's part of the game. You can't control the weather, so you just deal with it."Phillies manager Rob Thomson was fine with the decision by Major League Baseball to postpone the game."Everybody would rather play in dry conditions. It's going to be fair for everybody," he said.For fans, tickets that were good for Monday night now become valid for Tuesday's game, when the calendar rolls over to November.Game 1 starter Aaron Nola will start for the Phillies in Game 4 against Cristian Javier. Either Syndergaard or Kyle Gibson will start Game 5 for the Phils. Game 2 starter Zack Wheeler takes the mound for Game 6 on extra rest, setting up Suárez to start a possible Game 7 in Houston.Thomson felt confident turning to Suárez in Game 7 even though he was roughed up by the Astros for six runs in three innings on Oct. 4 in his final start of the season."Some guys get sped up, get a little excited," Thomson said. "Some guys, their heartbeat stays the same, and Ranger is one of those guys."Phillies righty Kyle Gibson could start Game 5 if the Phillies turn to Syndergaard in the bullpen in either of the next two games. Syndergaard went to the outfield after the postponement for some light long tossing in the rain.Gibson would be a stretch after he went 10-8 in 31 starts but none since Oct. 1. His only postseason appearance was 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in Game 2 of the NLCS on Oct. 19 against the Padres. Gibson went 1-3 with a 9.79 ERA over his last six regular-season starts. Thomson said he could get 60-65 pitches out of Gibson.The Astros and Phillies both worked out on the field Monday before the tarp was put down around 5 p.m. It started to rain about an hour later."I'm glad we took some batting practice and played some balls off the wall. That's their real home-field advantage," Baker said.And once again, rain intruded on the World Series in Philly.In 2008, the clinching Game 5 actually took three days to play. The Phillies and Tampa Bay were tied when the game was suspended and, after steady rain the next day, Philadelphia won the World Series a day after that.The start of World Series games in Philadelphia in 1993, at Veterans Stadium, and 2009, at Citizens Bank Park, were delayed by rain. This year, the Phillies clinched the NL Championship Series with a win against San Diego on a rainy, gusty Sunday.___
