Keondre Coburn stripped the ball and Jaylan Ford recovered at the Texas 39-yard line to thwart the Wildcats' chances to tie the game and match the largest comeback in school history. "Probably a little bit of trying to do too much," Martinez said. "I got it batted away." K-State, 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12 Conference, suffered its sixth-straight loss to Texas, 6-3 and 4-2, and saw sole possession of second place in the league standings batted away. 🏈 Second-half comeback falls short as No. 24 Texas upends No. 13 K-State

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks became bowl eligible for the first time since 2008 with a 37-16 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon at David Booth Memorial Stadium.&nbsp;The win is Kansas’ first against a ranked opponent since 2010, breaking a streak of 44-straight losses to ranked teams.&nbsp;

An excited Lawrence crowd of 43,306 saw Kansas improve to 6-3 and 3-3 in the Big 12, making Kansas bowl eligible for a possible 13th appearance in a bowl game in program history. Oklahoma State also dropped to 6-3 and 3-3 in the Big 12. The win over the Cowboys was the first victory by the Jayhawks over a ranked opponent at home since 2005.

Running back Devin Neal rushed for 224 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries, while adding 110 receiving yards on six catches. He became the first player in program history to rush for 200+ yards and have 100+ receiving yards in the same game. He is just the third Power 5 player since 1996 to have at least 220 rushing yards and 110 receiving yards in the same game.

"“I’m so happy for the guys that have been through a lot during their time. To see the locker room the way it is celebrating and so happy and for all the times it’s been tough…It says a lot about them. I’m happy for the fans and the staff, but for those guys that have worked through it in that group to play so well today, I’m proud.”"

On Oklahoma State’s first drive of the game, the Cowboys pushed the ball down the field 40 yards, however, cornerback Cobee Bryant, who missed the team’s most recent game against Baylor with an injury, intercepted a Cowboy pass to give the Jayhawks the ball on the Kansas 27 yard-line.

The Jayhawks didn’t waste any time getting into the endzone on their first drive. Led by Quarterback Jason Bean, Kansas went 73 yards on four plays in 1:32 to get on the scoreboard first. Neal ran for 55 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown rush into the right side of the endzone.&nbsp;

“Devin made a lot of plays in the passing and running game,” Leipold said. “It was the most physical he ran, as well. We’re going to need that.”

OSU started their second drive on their own 25 yard line, however, an interception by cornerback Ra’Mello Dotson ended the short drive. Dotson intercepted the ball at the Kansas 32-yard line and returned it 13 yards to put the Jayhawks on their own 45 yard line. The interception was Dotson’s second of the season. Nearing the end of the first quarter, the Jayhawks pushed the ball down the field 76 yards on 16 plays with the drive being capped with a 21-yard field goal by kicker Jacob Borcila.&nbsp;

The Jayhawk defense was able to keep Oklahoma State shutout in the first quarter, but the Cowboys were able to get their first score of the game in the second quarter. The Jayhawks, however, responded fast with a 49 second scoring drive. Bean rushed for a career-high 73 yards up the left side of the field for a Kansas touchdown.&nbsp;

Kansas ended a 47-yard OSU drive, with a fumble recovery by Lorenzo McCaskill. Kansas took advantage and responded with an 87-yard scoring drive. Lawrence Arnold caught an 8-yard pass from Bean in the left corner of the endzone over an OSU defender.&nbsp;

Jared Casey caught the first touchdown of the second half on a 2-yard pass in the back of the end zone from Bean.&nbsp;The score capped a fifteen-play, 75-yard drive that took 7:08 off the clock.&nbsp;

Oklahoma State responded with an 11-play, 54-yard drive that concluded with a 35 yard field goal. Kansas followed with a field goal off a 72-yard drive that was capped with a 20-yard kick of its own. The Cowboys were able to capitalize on a 10-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown.&nbsp;

The Cowboys remained scoreless for the rest of the game, while Kansas recorded another 3 points off a 31-yard field goal by&nbsp;Borcila. The Jayhawks tallied their third interception from Rich Miller, who returned it 34 yards to ice the game.

Bean finished 18 for 23 for 203 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown on four carries. Receiver Luke Grimm established a new career high with seven catches for 65 yards. Kenny Logan Jr., led the Jayhawks with eight tackles. The only other cornerbacks on the roster, L'Jarius Sneed and Chris Lammons, are only in their third years in the league. That makes the Chiefs one of the youngest defensive backfields in the NFL.

Sports Headlines for Sunday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 13 Hutchinson (3-0) hit a record 18 triples in Tuesday night's opener against Fort Scott.

Saturday night in the arena, the Dragons made 16 threes, but started a chilly 1 of 7.

NEO (1-2) jumped out to an 11-2 lead on a Hutchinson high-octane offense that started the game on a 4:15 drought.

Aaron Potter's basket took the lid off the hoop as Hutchinson raced back to a 16-15 lead just five minutes later.

The Dragons led by as many as 14 in the first quarter, but took a 57-50 lead into the locker room.

Freshman Ty Frierson took over in the second half. After hitting just 1 of 4 three-pointers in the first half, Frierson nailed 5 of 8 in the second to lead Hutchinson with his career-high 25.

Frierson hit back-to-back threes and Jackson Leyba added another in just the first two minutes of the second frame.

After making five triples in the first half, Hutchinson dropped 11 in the last 20 minutes.

Four Dragons scored in double digits, led by Frierson's 25 (Aaron Franklin 20, Jackson Leyba 16 and Tony Green 12).

Franklin and Green both notched double-doubles as each pulled down 12 rebounds. The Dragons outrebounded NEO 63-39.

Hutchinson took 24 more shots from the field than NEO, but the Golden Norse stayed in the contest with 51.4% shooting.

Five NEO players scored in double digits. Three of them scored 22 or more.

Always Wright scored 25 and dished seven assists.

Jordan Johnson added 22, while Massai Graham had a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds). Kelvin Spruill added 13 points.

Frierson and Leyba both had career days for the Blue Dragons.

Frierson set career highs in points (25) and three-pointers made (6).

Leyba had a career-high in points (16) and rebounds (7).

Hutchinson tallied 35 second-chance points on 30 offensive rebounds.

Despite building a 20-point advantage with 7:35 remaining, Hutchinson found itself in a battle with 2:23 left.

Over the course of five minutes, NEO cut the lead to 106-101. Twenty-four seconds later, the Golden Norse had the Dragon lead down to four.

With 1:12 left, Graham fouled out of the contest and Hutchinson went up 112-104. His replacement, Spruill, fouled out 22 seconds after that and the Dragons took an eight-point lead.

Hutchinson made 23 of 32 free throws on the night, including a crucial 8 0f 8 in the last two minutes to hang on for the victory.

Hutchinson plays Labette at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 9. This game was originally scheduled for Nov. 8, but will instead be played Wednesday.

Hutchinson managed just a 38-33 lead at halftime as NEO capitalized on 16 points off nine Dragon turnovers.

Hutchinson only turned the ball over four times in the second half and Mya Williams shook off her 1-of-6 cold streak to finish the game with 21 points (18 in the second half).

Kali Howard just missed a double-double with 18 points and eight rebounds. She opened the season with back-to-back double-doubles, the first two of her career.

Journey Armstead notched 14 points thanks to 7 of 8 shooting from the charity stripe. She also dished seven assists.

The Golden Norse did not score any points off Dragon turnovers in the second half.

The Dragons added 20 points in the paint in the second half (32 total for the game) and outscored NEO by 15 in the third quarter.

The Dragons are back in action at home Wednesday, Nov. 9, against Washburn's JV. This game was originally scheduled for Nov. 8, but had to be moved because of a scheduling conflict.

🏀 WBB: No. 9 Dragons power past NEO with big third quarter

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson's defense scored before the offense ever had to take a snap.&nbsp;

Independence quarterback Greg Jones dropped back on the first third down of the game and Rodney Green Jr. knocked the ball loose.&nbsp;

The ball hit the turf and was reluctantly picked up by Ja'Mez Drummer, who stopped — thinking the ball was ruled incomplete.&nbsp;

Officials let the play finish as Drummer kicked it into gear for a scoop-six.&nbsp;

Independence challenged the ruling, since Jones had the ball behind his head, ready to throw, when the ball came out. Coach Jason Martin was hoping for an incomplete pass ruling, but officials confirmed the call.&nbsp;

The early 7-0 lead was just the beginning of Hutchinson's rout of a very good Pirate team.&nbsp;

The Pirates (3-5, 2-3) have a losing record on the year, but all of the losses have been close and against top-tier teams (Iowa Central, Butler, Iowa Western, Garden City and Hutchinson).&nbsp;

Coach Dallas said the focus was to "Get off the field on third down." Indy went 0 for 11 on third down conversions. "They didn't convert all day," Dallas said. The Pirates also went for it on fourth down and did not convert against the Dragon D.

The defense pitched a shutout for the second time this season and has allowed just 10.1 points per game this year.

Hutchinson held the Pirates to 58 total yards.&nbsp;

Once the Dragon offense got on the field, it played at a high level, too.

Quarterback Dylan Laible threw for 150 yards on 9 of 17 completions for two touchdowns.

Malik Benson, the nation's top recruit, caught both of Laible's TD passes. Both scores came in the first quarter after Drummer's 20-yard scoop-and-score.

Laible's 9-yard pass to Benson capped an 8-play, 62-yard drive that took just 3:31 off the clock. The Dragons turned around and scored on a 51-second drive that needed just four plays to cover 58 yards.

That 4-yard pass to Benson came compliments of a Stephen Matina fumble recovery.

In the blink of an eye, an Indy defense that had surrendered just 18.7 points per game going into Saturday's matchup, found itself down 24-0 after one quarter.

Cole Segraves added field goals from 33 and 28 yards away. He should have been kicking for one after a Dylan Kedzior touchdown in the second quarter, but that run was called back for a holding penalty.

It was not the only Kedzior TD called back. Later in the game, his 72-yard dash to the end zone was also nullified by a holding penalty.

Hutchinson (9-0, 6-0) had seven penalties for 80 yards, while Indy racked up 15 penalties for 149. Three Pirates were booted from the contest for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Despite the nullified runs, Kedzior finished with 88 yards rushing and a touchdown from two yards out just before halftime.

Defensive end Nikko Taylor forced Jones to throw away a pass from the end zone while he was still in the pocket. That safety and the Kedzior run put Hutchinson up 36-0 at the break.

Tre Bess got some good touches at RB and made the most of a 42-yard scamper to the end zone in the third quarter. Bess averaged eight yards per carry on eight touches.

Ed Williams III also ran for a touchdown. His seven-yard run was the final score of the game with 7:40 left. His carry capped a 9-play, 44-yard drive that took 4:31 off the clock.

Next week's matchup against Iowa Western was potentially a No. 1 vs. No. 2 contest. However, No. 2 Iowa Western (8-1) lost to No. 8 Coffeyville Saturday night 23-7.

Iowa Western will certainly drop a few spots in Monday's poll.

The top four teams in the final poll will enter a playoff to determine the teams headed to Arkansas for the national championship in December.&nbsp;

Hutchinson has now won the last three KJCCC titles.

One week ago, circumstances came together to help the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons clinch the 2022 Jayhawk Conference championship.

Hutchinson defeated Highland 31-7, and with Coffeyville's 19-14 win over Butler, the Blue Dragons earned some new hardware as the conference champion.

The Blue Dragons play their final conference game of the season on Saturday against the Independence Pirates. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Gowans Stadium.

Just because the KJCCC title has been wrapped up, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty on the line for the Blue Dragons. The No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons need a victory today to remain in firm contention for the NJCAA Football Playoffs. The Dragons play Independence Saturday and will be at No. 2 Iowa Western next week in Council Bluffs, IA.

The Pirates come into Saturday's game coming off a bye week and with the knowledge of how to defeat the Blue Dragons in Gowans Stadium.

One season ago, the Pirates stunned the Blue Dragons as Indy rallied from 14 points down and won 33-28 when Deontay Wilson broke a couple of tackles and wound his way for a 53-yard touchdown with 6 seconds left in the game.

The Blue Dragons exacted revenge in a big way when Dylan Liable tied a career high with 365 passing yards and five touchdown passes -&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/benson_malik_obrm">Malik Benson</a>&nbsp;caught five passes for 197 yards - as Hutchinson rolled to a 42-0 win in the Jayhawk Conference Playoff semifinals in Independence.

The Blue Dragons captured their third-straight Jayhawk Conference title last week, winning the regular-season title in 2020-21 and the KJCCC Playoffs last season.

The Dragons are riding a 14-game winning streak, which is tied for the second-longest streak in program history, matching a run from 1968 to 1970.

Last week against Highland, the Blue Dragons held their fifth opponent to 10 points or less and forced four takeaways against the Scotties. The Blue Dragons had a season-low 340 total yards, despite a 110-yard rushing performance from&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/byrd_jr._tim_4csk">Tim Byrd Jr.</a>

The Blue Dragons are 4-0 this season at Gowans Stadium with wins over No. 13 Navarro, No. 7 Iowa Central, No. 9 Butler and Highland. The Dragons go in search of their 17th undefeated season on home turf.

🏈 No. 1 Blue Dragons face Independence Saturday at Gowans

LIBERAL – Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/golden_taniya_58dk">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;pounded down 24 kills and the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team nearly pulled off a huge fourth-set comeback on Friday in the Region VI Tournament semifinals at the Greenhouse.

The Blue Dragons fought off two match points against No. 20 Butler, but couldn't have a third as the Grizzlies defeated Hutchinson for the third time this season, 20-25, 25-25, 25-20, 27-25.

Hutchinson's season comes to an end at 26-12.

Golden had 24 kills on 50 attacks and hit .260 to lead a Blue Dragons offense that hut .161 for the match. Golden just missed a double-double with nine kills.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/fery_perline_iyqs">Perline Fery</a>&nbsp;had six kills and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/dean_anna_mwqh">Anna Dean</a>&nbsp;had five kills.

Despite 11 team blocks, the Dragons had trouble with Butler's balanced attack with four players having nine or more kills. The Grizzlies hit .247 for the match.

Setter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/serrano_andrea_m5cv">Andrea Serrano</a>&nbsp;had 22 assists and an ace and six digs. Set 1: Tied at 5-all, the Blue Dragons went on a 7-2 run that was capped by a Golden kill to give the Dragons a 12-7 lead. The Dragons sided out well in the opening set, never allowing the Grizzlies to score more than two points in any rotation for the remainder of the set. The Dragons built a 23-16 lead and the Grizzlies cut it to 24-20 before Golden's fifth kill of the set closed the set for Hutchinson, winning 25-20.

Set 2: The Blue Dragons hit just .067 in the second set. Still a Golden kill gave the Dragons an 11-8 lead. After four ties in the set, the Grizzlies took the lead for good at 16-15 on a Carrie Roe kill, which started a 6-1 Butler run. Roe had four kills in the set and closed out the set with a kill to knot the match at 1-1.

Set 3:&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/fery_perline_iyqs">Perline Fery</a>'s kill gave the Blue Dragons a 10-5 lead and forced a Butler timeout. Butler immediately scored six in a row, but an&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2022-23/bios/briseno_aleandra_n0jz">Alejandra Briseno</a>&nbsp;kill stopped that run to tie the set at 11-all. Tied at 15, Golden was balled for an illegal set and Grizzlies followed that with back-to-back kills for an 18-15 lead. A Harvey kill pulled the Dragons within 18-17. Rowe stopped that advance with a kill and Kennedy Kelly had an ace for a 30-17 lead. The Grizzlies finished out the set to take a 2-1 match lead.

Set 4: Butler's Rainey Aven threw down a setter dump for a kill to that the fourth set. The Grizzlies jumped on that momentum and built a 17-11 lead. The Blue Dragons went on a 9-2 run and took a 20-19 lead on a Grizzly attack error. The Dragons took a 20-19 lead on a Golden kill, but Aven had another kill to tie the set at 20. A Golden kill gave the Dragons a set point at 24-23, but Aven did the Dragons in again. Trailing 25-24, Golden had her 24th kill of the match. Butler scored the final two points to put the Dragons away.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 13 Hutchinson (2-0) appeared to have everything under control for most of its contest against Triton (1-1).

The Dragons took a 15-point lead into the break and led the first half by as many as 20.

The Trojans used 13 three-pointers to make things interesting.

Three Trojans scored 22-plus points (TJ Biel 28; Brandon Muntu 22; Keyondre Young 22).

Hutchinson's Aaron Franklin followed his 28-point Tuesday outing with 34 points Friday night at the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic. Franklin made 16 of his 23 attempts from the field.

Five Dragons scored in double-digits (Franklin 34; Aaron Potter 15; Kernan Bundy 14; Ra'Sean Frederick 11).

After hitting a school record 18 three-pointers Tuesday, Hutchinson made just eight triples Friday night on 8-of-34 shooting (23.5%).

Triton battled within five points, once with 6:38 left and again with just 3:02 remaining. Each time Triton cut the lead to five, Hutchinson had back-to-back answers.

After the lead got cut to five with just under seven to play, Hutchinson quickly went back up by 10 after bucket and a Tony Green And-1.

Triton pulled back within 103-98 with 3:02 left, just to see Hutchinson score four quick points in less than 55 seconds.

The Dragons stretched that lead to 111-103 with 57.9 seconds left. Bundy had the ball knocked away from him near midcourt and had to call the team's last timeout to avoid a jump ball.

Coming out of the timeout, Bundy was called for a travel on his way to the hoop.

The Trojans scored two more points, but followed that possession with an offensive foul that put the game away. Biel lowered his shoulder into a Dragon defender, erasing any last comeback hopes for Triton.

Triton hit 39.4% of its threes while Hutchinson made just 23.5%.

The Dragons shot 45.7% overall while Triton was right behind at 44.9%.

Hutchinson had seven more made baskets on 14 more attempts.

🏀 MBB: Tritons test No. 13 Dragons

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 9 Hutchinson (2-0) opened up the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic at the Sports Arena Friday night with an 84-48 victory over Mineral Area (1-1).

Hutchinson's Mya Williams led all scorers with 21 points.

Kali Howard notched her second-career double-double in as many games with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Morgan Browning finished with 10 points and four assists.

Newcomer Monae Duffy scored seven points and grabbed 10 boards.

Hutchinson doubled the Cardinals' score in the first quarter, then took a 43-22 lead into the locker room.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutch High Salthawks played an even game statistically with Bishop Carroll on a rainy night in Gowans Stadium Friday. 

The Salthawks took advantage of the slippery football as Mason Jones scooped a loose fumble from Carroll's Jackson King at 6:37 to go in the fourth quarter and dove into the end zone for what turned out to be the winning score to give Hutchinson a 14-7 triumph over the Golden Eagles.

It took almost the entire first half for anyone to score, but Nic Lange snuck in from one yard out at the 33 second mark of the second quarter and Hutch led 7-0 at the break.&nbsp;

It looked for a little while like that might hold up all night, until Thomas Gorges got free and sprinted 42 yards to paydirt at 8:46 to go in the third to tie it up for Carroll.

The difference in the game really did come down to turnovers, as the Salthawks recovered three Carroll fumbles and intercepted a pass while Hutchinson fumbled five times, but Carroll only got one of them.

Hutchinson advances to play Maize in Maize next Friday after the Eagles won over Kapaun 43-14.
