
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 73-68 loss to the Coffeyville Red Ravens on Tuesday evening in the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons held a slim 6-4 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter. That would be the only lead HutchCC would have the entire game.
Hutchinson (23-8) trailed 14-7 after the first quarter and then outscored the Red Ravens in the second period to pull within 27-23 at halftime.
Coffeyville (20-12) did most of its damage from behind the arc, knocking down 11-of-21 attempts from deep. Kyleigh Ortiz led the Red Ravens' charge with eight of the made triples to account for a game-high 26 points.
The Blue Dragons tried to make a push in the third quarter, but ultimately went into the final quarter trailing 53-47. Hutchinson pulled within five with under 40 seconds left in the fourth, but Red Raven free throws doomed the Blue Dragons' comeback bid.
HutchCC knocked down 23-of-60 shots for 38 percent, while going 6-of-17 (35 percent) from the three-point line. The Blue Dragons made 16-of-22 (72 percent) free throws, as well.
Coffeyville connected on 22-of-49 (44 percent) shots and 18-of-26 (69 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Blue Dragons were led by Morgan Browning's 16 points. Kali Howard had 13. The Red Ravens were paced by Ortiz, but also received 14 points from Tetona Woods-Blackowl.
The Red Ravens advance to the Region VI semifinal against Dodge City on Friday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Garvey Center on the Friends University campus.
