KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self will miss the Big 12 Tournament after going to the emergency room late Wednesday for what doctors called “a standard procedure.” It’s uncertain whether Self will be back for the NCAA Tournament. Dr. Steve Stites, the chief medical officer at the University of Kansas Health System, said Self did not have a heart attack, which some outlets had reported, but that he remained a patient Thursday. Stites also did not describe the nature or extent of the procedure, though Self is expected to make a full recovery.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mike Miles and Chuck O’Bannon scored 22 points apiece and No. 22 TCU rolled to an 80-67 victory over No. 12 Kansas State to advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament. The Horned Frogs had been beaten by the Wildcats in four of the past five tournaments but will now play No. 7 Texas for a spot in the title game. Keyontae Johnson had 14 points and seven boards to lead the Wildcats, though he fouled out with more than six minutes left in the game. Desi Sills also had 14 points and Markquis Nowell had 11 for Kansas State.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Playing without ailing coach Bill Self on the sideline, third-ranked Kansas turned to big offensive performances from Jalen Wilson and Dajuan Harris Jr. along with some stingy defense to pull away from West Virginia 75-61 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament. They will play fifth-seeded Iowa State, which beat Baylor earlier in the day, in Friday night’s semifinals. Self missed the game with what the school called an undisclosed illness. He was being treated at the University of Kansas Health System. Erik Stevenson had 13 points to lead West Virginia in the loss.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Sir’Jabari Rice scored 13 points to lead four Texas players in double-figures scoring, and the seventh-ranked Longhorns shut down Oklahoma State once again in a 61-47 victory in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals. Tyrese Hunter and Dylan Disu scored 11 points apiece and Arterio Morris had 10 as the second-seeded Longhorns breezed into the semifinals and a matchup with No. 6 seed TCU. Caleb Asberry had 16 points for the Cowboys, whose slim NCAA Tournament hopes may have taken a devastating blow with the lackluster performance.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gabe Kalscheur hit six 3-pointers and scored 24 points to help Iowa State beat No. 10 Baylor 78-72 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament.
