MORAGA, Calif. –&nbsp;After starting off the season with three home games, Kansas Women’s Basketball is headed to the Bay Area of California for two games at the Saint Mary’s Thanksgiving Classic. The tournament will be played at University Credit Union Pavilion, on the campus of Saint Mary’s.

Kansas opens the event on Friday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. CT against Maine out of the America East Conference. The Black Bears are 2-2 on the year following a 61-59 victory over Northeastern on Monday night. On Saturday, Nov. 26, the Jayhawks will face tournament-host Saint Mary’s at 4 p.m. CT. The Gaels, who compete in the West Coast Conference, are 2-2 on the year after winning the Women’s Basketball Invitational tournament last season.

Both games will be streamed on the West Coast Conference Network. Jayhawk fans can also listen to the game on the Jayhawk Radio Network from Learfield, with Steven Davis calling the action.

Kansas improved to 3-0 on Sunday, Nov. 20, with a 73-43 victory over UTRGV, the largest margin of victory by the Jayhawks this season. Four Jayhawks scored in double figures against UTRGV, led by Holly Kersgieter and Chandler Prater with 15 points apiece. Kersgieter also led the Jayhawks with 15 rebounds – one off her career-high – as she recorded her first double-double of the season and seventh of her career. Prater also recorded a double-double, the first of her career, after pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds.

KU’s leading scorer and rebounder through three games is Taiyanna Jackson, who had 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots against UTRGV after recording double-doubles in each of the Jayhawks’ first two games. Zakiyah Franklin scored seven points off the bench against UTRGV and now sits at 999 career points. With her next point, Franklin will become the 31st player in program history to score 1,000 points in a Jayhawk uniform.

Kansas and Maine have met only once all-time in women’s basketball, with Kansas claiming a 126-63 victory over the Black Bears on December 1, 2010, at Allen Fieldhouse. The 126 points scored by the Jayhawks in that game remains a single-game school record. Kansas and Saint Mary’s have played twice previously, with the Jayhawks holding a 2-0 advantage over the Gaels. On their lone prior visit to Moraga, KU defeated Saint Mary’s 82-58 on January 4, 1985. The Jayhawks took the last meeting over SMC 86-81 on December 15, 2019, in Lawrence.

After allowing 41 points on nearly 60 percent shooting in the first half, Wichita State turned the tables and held North Texas to 12 second half points on 4-of-27 shooting. PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) —&nbsp;Kansas’ Bobby Pettiford Jr. stood all the way out near midcourt, almost on the Battle 4 Atlantis logo, when he saw his teammate launch a shot for the lead with only a few seconds left in overtime.

“I mean, I normally don’t crash but that’s the one time I get to crash,” Pettiford said.

He sprinted all the way under the basket just in time to see a loose rebound pop to him. Pettiford then made a twisting reverse layup with 0.2 seconds left to give No. 3 Kansas a 69-68 win against Wisconsin on Thursday in a tournament semifinal game. Pettiford’s layup marked his only points of the game, capping a Thanksgiving thriller.

Trailing 68-67, Kansas’ final play appeared stuck when Jalen Wilson had to kick out a pass to Zach Clemence beyond the 3-point arc with about 5 seconds left. Clemence launched the long 3 that banged off the basket, but Wilson kept the play alive by tipping the ball enough to keep Tyler Wahl from snagging the rebound.

“I had kind of a good angle but I mean, kind of a little bit of luck and skill at the same time,” he said. “So I just kind of hoped it went in.”

Pettiford landed on the floor after the basket as he watched the ball go through the net, then extended his fists in front of him and yelled as he started to sit up. By the time he had gotten on his feet, he had a big smile while his teammates began to hug and gather with him near the baseline corner to celebrate. The team left the court to chants of “Bobby! Bobby!” as they headed to Friday’s championship game.

Wilson scored 29 points and had 14 rebounds for the reigning national champion Jayhawks (6-0), and Kevin McCullar Jr. had 18 points and nine rebounds — and a 3 with 11.8 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

“We had nothing going (in the second half) and they had outplayed us totally,” coach Bill Self said. “Obviously we make two plays at the end of regulation and the end of overtime that basically gave us the win. We were not the best team today.”

Wahl led the Badgers (4-1) with 23 points and 10 rebounds. He scored 14 points in the second half in what was at times a one-man comeback, including a run of nine straight points with his team down eight in the final 3 1/2 minutes of regulation.

His last score was a spinning drive against a falling Wilson for a layup and the 68-67 lead with 21 seconds left in OT.

“We’re not into moral victories, but this group showed me a lot today,” Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said. “And we also learned we have a lot of things we can continue to get better at.”

Wisconsin shot 48% in the second half behind Wahl, who had 14 points and got to the foul line seven times. That included a run of nine straight points with his team down by eight, ending with his banked-in runner against Kansas’ Gradey Dick for a 61-60 lead with 49.4 seconds left in regulation.

Wisconsin: The same team that struggled to crack 40 points — or make a shot, frankly — in the first round of the tournament looked to be on its way to another bad offensive showing. Instead, Wahl and the Badgers showed resilience and climbed back in it, they stayed shot for shot with Kansas down the stretch.

The tournament title was the 17th&nbsp;in school history and the first since winning the 2018 Paradise Jam. Johnson (16 points) and fellow seniors&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/markquis-nowell/9650">Markquis Nowell</a>&nbsp;(18 points) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/desi-sills/9686">Desi Sills</a>&nbsp;(16 points) combined for 50 of the Wildcats' 61 points, including 22 of their 28 second-half points, in which, the team rallied from an 11-point deficit with 17:27 to play. Nowell was named the Cayman Islands Classic Tournament MVP and to the all-tournament team, while Johnson was selected to the all-tournament team. Nowell averaged 18.7 points and 9.0 assists in the 3-game tournament, while Johnson averaged a team-best 19.3 points on 53.6 percent shooting with 6.0 rebounds per game. K-State (6-0) had to survive some nervous moments to earn the victory, as both teams called their full allotment of timeouts (2 each) before the last 4.7 seconds played out. LSU (5-1) was able to dribble up the court and seemingly tied the game at 61-all at the buzzer. However, the officials reviewed the play and waved the shot off after they discovered that the clock didn't start on time and the shot came after the game clock had expired. It was a tale of two halves for the Tigers, who looked like the more rested team after playing in the early sessions in the first 2 days and breezing past their first 2 opponents by 16 and 15 points, respectively. LSU scored 41 points in the first half on 47.1 percent (16-of-34), including 50 percent (5-of-10) from 3-point range, with just 3 turnovers, to build as much as a 12-point advantage right before halftime. Things changed in the second half, as the Tigers managed just 18 points on 36.8 percent (7-of-19) shooting, including 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from long range, to go with 14 turnovers. K-State took a season-high 6 charges on the night. Down 11 points with 17:27 remaining, the Wildcats slowly chipped away at the deficit, as they got contributions from multiple players but most notably from Sills, who scored 7 points in a game-changing 15-3 run. A Sills layup and dunk by sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/cam-carter/9658">Cam Carter</a>&nbsp;got the team to with 49-45 to force a timeout by LSU head coach&nbsp;Matt McMahon&nbsp;with just under 10 minutes to play. The run continued with a 3-point play from Sills before Carter gave K-State its first lead since the opening moments of the first half at 50-49 with 7:47 remaining. Nowell followed with a layup for a 52-49 edge, but LSU regained the lead on a pair of free throws and a jumper by&nbsp;Trae Hannibal. 🏐 Baka and Blocks Key in Wildcats’ Senior Night Victory Over Red Raiders

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) —&nbsp;First-year guard Gradey Dick scored a season-high 25 points to help No. 3 Kansas beat North Carolina State 80-74 in Wednesday’s Battle 4 Atlantis opener, giving coach Bill Self a successful return to the bench.

Dick had 18 points on six 3-pointers in the first half. Jalen Wilson added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the reigning national champion Jayhawks (5-0), who held an eight-point halftime lead and a nine-point second-half lead before grinding it out in the final minutes.

Casey Morsell scored 21 points to lead the Wolfpack (4-1), while Terquavion Smith added 19 points.

N.C. State played a fast pace, picked up full court and stayed within arm’s reach of Kansas the entire way. The Wolfpack tied it five times in the second half, the last coming at 63-all on Jack Clark’s jumper with 7:14 left.

Dick went 6 for 9 from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes, the last seeing him knock down one through light contact from Morsell and fall to the floor just before the halftime horn.

Dick got up with an emphatic shout and clapping, while Morsell could only respond with a frustrated shrug as Kansas took a 39-31 lead into the break.

N.C. State: This was N.C. State’s first appearance at Atlantis since 2017 at the start of Kevin Keatts’ coaching tenure. That Wolfpack team opened that tournament with a stunning upset of No. 2 Arizona and this year’s bunch flirted with another while giving Kansas fits all the way to the final minutes.

Kansas: The 6-foot-8 Dick is off to a strong start. He came in averaging 16.8 points while shooting 10 of 20 from 3-point range, then surpassed his (short) season high of 23 points from the opener against Omaha.

N.C. State: The Wolfpack will face the Wisconsin-Dayton loser in Thursday’s consolation bracket.

Kansas: The Jayhawks advanced to Thursday’s semifinals to face the Wisconsin-Dayton winner.

The Texas Rangers hired Mike Maddux as their new pitching coach 
Wednesday, and added former Kansas City Royals general manager Dayton 
Moore as a senior adviser in their baseball operations department.

Maddux
 is returning to Texas to be on new manager Bruce Bochy's staff. Maddux 
was first the pitching coach for the Rangers from 2009-15, a span in 
which they made their only two World Series appearances. He spent the 
past five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, and has been part of 11 
playoffs teams over his past 15 seasons as a pitching coach.

Moore
 spent the past 16 years with the Royals, where he was named GM in May 
2006 and also served as president of baseball operations before getting 
fired in September. The Royals had three consecutive 100-loss seasons 
before Moore's arrival. They won back-to-back American League pennants 
in 2014 and 2015, beating the New York Mets for the World Series title 
after the second one.

Moore will collaborate with Rangers general 
manager Chris Young, the former pitcher who finished his big league 
playing career with the Royals from 2015-17.

“There is no one more
 respected in our game. He rebuilt the Royals into a world champion,” 
Young said. “Dayton’s experiences as a longtime general manager, as well
 as his extensive background in scouting, will be a tremendous asset to 
me and the other leaders of our baseball group.”

Before joining 
the Royals, Moore spent 13 seasons with the Atlanta Braves in scouting 
and player development roles before becoming their director of player 
personnel in 2002.

Maddux was the second-longest tenured pitching 
coach in club history when he left the Rangers after the 2015 season and
 spent the following two years with Washington. Texas had four 
consecutive seasons with team ERAs under 4.00 from 2010-13. Before his 
arrival, they hadn't had a team ERA under 4.00 since 1990, and haven't 
had one since Maddux left.

After 15 seasons pitching in the big leagues, Maddux began his MLB coaching career with the Milwaukee Brewers from 2003-08.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas and coach Lance Leipold have agreed to their second contract extension in less than three months, this time adding two years to his deal and keeping him tied to the Jayhawks through the 2029 season, a person familiar with the terms told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday night because the school had not announced the extension.

Leipold had a year added to his original contract on Sept. 1 as a reward for a two-win first season that raised hopes around Lawrence that the football program might return to relevance. But after a 5-0 start had the Jayhawks ranked in the AP Top 25, and a sixth win made them bowl-eligible, the school aggressively moved to lock up Leipold well into the future — especially with Nebraska and Wisconsin, where he has deep connections, in the market for coaches.

Leipold’s original contract was a $16.5 million, six-year pact that paid him $2.2 million in its initial season with $200,000 increases each year. He also would earn $50,000 for finishing in the Top 25, earning Big 12 coach of the year or winning seven regular-season games, a threshold he can clear with a win Saturday over rival Kansas State.

He's already earned a $100,000 bonus for qualifying for a bowl and can earn another $75,000 for academic benchmarks.

Leipold was hired early last year, shortly after the Jayhawks parted with Les Miles amid sexual harassment allegations from his time at LSU. The scandal led to the ouster of Jeff Long, his longtime friend and the athletic director who hired him.

Kansas eventually gave the AD job to Travis Goff, and his first major move was to pluck Leipold — who won six Division III titles at Wisconsin-Whitewater — from Buffalo, which he had taken to three straight bowl games.

Leipold was a popular pick among Jayhawks fans because of his Midwest pedigree, small-town roots and success in building programs, and his old-school demeanor on the field fit seamlessly with the values of the school.

Despite having no offseason or time to put together a full recruiting class, Leipold managed to lead the Jayhawks to an upset of Texas late last season, and then carried the momentum right into this year. They ripped off five consecutive wins before losing quarterback Jalon Daniels to a shoulder injury, then toppled Oklahoma State with backup Jason Bean under center to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since the 2008 season.

On Saturday, they will try to snap a 13-game losing streak to Kansas State in their regular-season finale.

The extension for Leipold is the latest investment in football for a school primarily known for its national champion men's basketball program. Kansas officials announced plans last month for a long-awaited renovation to Memorial Stadium, part of a project that could exceed $300 million and include new conference, entertainment and retail spaces.

🏐 KSHSAA announces all-league Volleyball awards

PRATT, Kan. — After suffering its first loss of the season and being held to just 75 points at Cloud County Saturday, No. 9 Hutchinson got back to its scoring ways on the road at Pratt.

Aaron Franklin scored 34 and Ty Frierson got hot in the second half to post a career-high 29 as Hutchinson (8-1, 2-1) squeaked by the Beavers (4-4, 1-2).

The Beavers stayed in the contest behind Quintin Metcalf's 49 points. Metcalf's 49 ties the most ever scored against the Dragons in school history, tying an Ark City (now Cowley) record set in 1958.

The Dragon defense has now allowed an opponent to shoot 60-plus percent in four consecutive halves. The Beavers finished 63.2% from the field.

The Dragons then built a 10-point lead with 6:10 remaining. That lead expanded to 11, but dissipated less than three minutes later as the Beavers went on a 13-3 run.

A couple of reverse layups later and the Dragons got some breathing room in the final two minutes.

Franklin scored on a cut to the basket with 1:40 left to give Hutchinson the 115-112 lead. Frierson then scored an acrobatic reverse layup to extend the lead to five.

Chidi Obichere scored an And-1 with 19.8 seconds left, but failed to hit the free throw.

The Beavers went into foul mode and sent Frierson to the line twice in the final 12 seconds. He went 3 of 4 and put the Dragons up by four with four seconds remaining.

Obichere took the final outlet of the game down the middle of the floor and slammed the ball through the hoop as time expired.

🏀 MBB: No. 9 Dragons escape Beaver Dome

PRATT, Kan. — The Blue Dragons (8-1, 2-1) bounced back in a big way against the Beavers (6-2, 1-2).

Hutchinson had not lost back-to-back games since the 2017-2018 campaign entering the Beaver Dome Tuesday night and coming off a road loss at Cloud County last Saturday.

The Blue Dragons struggled from the field early, making only 6 of 21 shots in the first quarter. Before going cold, Hutchinson hit three of its first five attempts.

Hutchinson made just six field goals in each of the first three quarters.

Pratt hit 7 of 15 to start the game and led Hutchinson 18-14 after one quarter.

The Dragons managed an eight-point lead by the break and started to pull away in the third quarter behind Morgan Browning's 19 points. After missing her only attempt of the first half, Browning scored all 19, including 3 of 3 from distance, in the second half.

Mya Williams finished with 15 after leading Hutchinson with 11 at the break.

Kali Howard and Monae Duffy each registered a double-double.

Howard posted 13 points and 13 boards while Duffy had 12 and 14, respectively.

Princess Anderson led the Beavers with 21 points. She shot just 3 of 14 from the field, but made 13 of 16 free throws.

Hutchinson scored 38 points in the paint and 22 points off 18 turnovers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;Wichita State's furious comeback and its bid for the Hall of Fame Classic title both fell a basket short in a 67-63 loss to San Francisco, Tuesday afternoon at the T-Mobile Center. After cutting a 13-point deficit to two over the last five minutes of the second half, WSU (3-2) came up empty on three different opportunities to tie or take the lead. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jaykwon-walton/7208">Jaykwon Walton</a>&nbsp;hit 8-of-11 shots and set new career-highs with 21 points and 10 rebounds. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/craig-porter-jr-/7213">Craig Porter Jr.</a>&nbsp;scored 16 points on 5-of-20 shooting and stuffed the box score with nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and a pair of blocks in 38 minutes. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/gus-okafor/7216">Gus Okafor</a>&nbsp;added 10 points and seven boards. The official pairings for the NJCAA Division I Football National Semifinals have been released and one of the matchups will be an all-Jayhawk Conference showdown at Gowans Stadium.

The No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Hutchinson Community College Football team will play host to the No. 4 Coffeyville Red Ravens at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 3 at Gowans Stadium in the first of two national semifinal games.

The other semifinal has No. 3 Iowa Western traveling to No. 2 Northwest Mississippi at 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 4 in Senatobia, Mississippi.

The semifinal winners will meet in the NJCAA Division I National Championship Game on Wednesday, December 14 at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Advanced ticket sales are already underway online. Tickets for the Hutchinson-Coffeyville semifinal are $15 advanced and $18 at the gate. All seating in Gowans Stadium will be general admission for this game. Blue Dragon All-Sports Tickets are not valid for the national semifinals. Both national semifinals will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Blue Dragons navigated a tough 2022 schedule as the only undefeated team in the NJCAA this season, winning the program's 10th Jayhawk Conference title and third in a row.

On the way to that league title, the Blue Dragons and Red Ravens met on September 24 in Coffeyville. The Blue Dragons won the defensive struggle 14-9 over the Red Ravens.

Running back&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/kedzior_dylan_601l">Dylan Kedzior</a>&nbsp;came off the bench in the second half against Coffeyville and ignited the Blue Dragon offense. Kedzior rushed for 85 yards in the fourth quarter, including a 21-yard run that set up his 3-yard go-ahead touchdown with 1:17 remaining in regulation.

The Blue Dragons are making their second national playoff appearance in the last three seasons. The Blue Dragons ran the table two seasons ago, defeating Snow College 29-27 in the first national championship played in Little Rock on June 5, 2020.

The semifinal round was installed before last season and the Dragons were No. 5 in the final regular-season rankings, just one spot out of the playoffs. After a decisive win over Hinds in the Salt City bowl, the Blue Dragons finished No. 3 in the national rankings.

The Dragons have now reeled off 16-straight wins, the second-longest win streak in program history.

After starting this season 2-2, Coffeyville has reeled off six-straight wins to steadily climb up the NJCAA National Rankings. The Ravens moved into the No. 4 spot in the poll after a convincing final two weeks of the regular season – a 23-7 home when over previous No. 2 Iowa Western and a 30-21 road triumph at Garden City.

This semifinal will feature the two Jayhawk Conference Players of the Year in Hutchinson's Kedzior – the league's 2022 Offensive Player of the Year – at Coffeyville's Bishop Fitzgerald, the league's Defensive Player of the Year. Also, the last two league coaches of the year – Hutchinson's Drew Dallas (2022) and Coffeyville's Jeff Leiker (2021) will be on the sidelines. Blue Dragon quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/laible_dylan_elo2">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;was also a finalist for the Walter Jones Player of the Year award.

The national semifinal appearance will be the 25th NJCAA postseason game in Blue Dragon Football history. The Dragons have played in 23 bowl games previously and now two national playoff appearances.

This will be the third postseason meeting between Hutchinson and Coffeyville that didn't involve the Jayhawk Conference/Region VI playoffs. The teams played in back-to-back Wheat Bowls in Wichita in 1948 and 1949. Coffeyville won the 1948 Wheat Bowl, 19-7. The teams tied 13-13 in 1948.

Hutchinson is 3-5 in eight KJCCC Playoff meetings with Coffeyville, going 3-0 at Gowans Stadium.
