Bruce Sutter, a Hall of Fame reliever and the 1979 Cy Young winner, has died. He was 69.

Sutter
 was recently diagnosed with cancer and died Thursday night in hospice, 
surrounded by his family, one of Sutter's three sons, Chad, told The 
Associated Press. The Baseball Hall of Fame said Bruce Sutter died in 
Cartersville, Georgia.

“All our father ever wanted to be 
remembered as was being a great teammate, but he was so much more than 
that,” the Sutter family said in a statement Friday. “He was also a 
great husband to our mother for 50 (years), he was a great father and 
grandfather and he was a great friend. His love and passion for the game
 of baseball can only be surpassed by his love and passion for his 
family.”

Sutter is considered one of the first pitchers to throw a
 split-finger fastball. The right-hander played 12 seasons in the major 
leagues, was a six-time All-Star and ended up with 300 saves over his 
career.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said he was “deeply saddened" by the news.

“Bruce
 was the first pitcher to reach the Hall of Fame without starting a 
game, and he was one of the key figures who foreshadowed how the use of 
relievers would evolve,” Manfred said in a statement. “Bruce will be 
remembered as one of the best pitchers in the histories of two of our 
most historic franchises.”

Sutter debuted with the Chicago Cubs in
 1976. The reliever won the Cy Young in 1979 in a season where he had 37
 saves, 2.22 ERA and 110 strikeouts.

He joined the St. Louis 
Cardinals and played with them from 1981 to 1984. There, he won a World 
Series in 1982, ending Game 7 against the Brewers with a strikeout.

“Being
 a St Louis Cardinal was an honor he cherished deeply,” the Sutter 
family's statement said. “To the Cardinals, his teammates and most 
importantly to the greatest fans in all of sports, we thank you for all 
of the love and support over the years.”

His last save, No. 300, came with the Atlanta Braves in 1988. Sutter was <a href="https://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/sutter-bruce">inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006</a>.

“Bruce
 was a fan-favorite during his years in St. Louis and in the years to 
follow, and he will always be remembered for his 1982 World Series 
clinching save and signature split-fingered pitch," Cardinals owner and 
CEO Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. "He was a true pioneer in the 
game, changing the role of the late inning reliever.”

Sutter was 
born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in January 1953. The Baseball Hall of 
Fame said in a release that he learned the split-finger fastball from a 
Cubs minor-league pitching instructor while recovering from surgery on 
his right elbow.

The Cardinals said Sutter is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter-in-law and six grandkids.

“I
 feel like a brother passed away,” Hall of Famer Jim Kaat said. “I knew 
Bruce deeper than just about any other teammate. We spent a lot of time 
together, and as happens when your careers end, you go your separate 
ways. But we stayed in touch and considered each other great friends."

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– The 38th&nbsp;annual Late Night in the Phog presented by HY-VEE is set for this Friday at 6 p.m., inside historic Allen Fieldhouse, with the&nbsp;<a href="https://kuathletics.com/jayhawks-expand-digital-presence-with-new-mobile-app/">Official Kansas Athletics App</a>&nbsp;serving as the exclusive spot to stream specific moments of the event for those not in attendance.

Fans not on hand in person will be able to watch portions of the night on the app, which is available on iPhones, Androids and tablets.

The Kansas radio tandem of Brian Hanni and Greg Gurley will be courtside at Late Night to call the action. Through the app, fans can listen to the duo and watch the below moments during the event,

KU coaches Brandon Schneider and Bill Self will address the crowd and will join the radio crew during their respective scrimmages, which can also be viewed on the app. The broadcast will conclude prior to the DJ Diesel (Shaquille O’Neal) performance.

While admission is free for the event, all fans attending must have claimed a ticket during the redemption windows for admission. Those who reserved tickets to Late Night in the Phog have already received their tickets via email. The tickets reserved in sections E, F, G, H, or J, will only be able to access those seats from the second-level concourse. Those will not have court access as that those typically do during a game. For the second time in three years, Baylor was chosen by the league’s head coaches to win the Big 12 men’s basketball regular season title. The Bears were also the preseason favorite in 2020-21 and went on to win both the Big 12 and NCAA championships.

Baylor received five first-place votes and totaled 77 points to edge out Kansas for the top spot. The Jayhawks had four first-place nods and 73 points to place second. Texas was picked third with the final first-place vote and 64 points. TCU was chosen fourth followed by a tie for fifth between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. The remainder of the poll included Oklahoma in seventh, Iowa State eighth, West Virginia ninth and Kansas State 10th.

The Big 12 has won the last two national championships as Kansas brought home the 2022 trophy following Baylor’s title in 2021. Big 12 teams have played in the last four Final Fours and the last three national championship games. The Big 12 is the first conference to win back-to-back national championships since 2009 and 2010 and is the only conference to have three different teams play in three consecutive championship games. Head coaches and student-athletes from each team will appear at the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tipoff, presented by Old Trapper in Kansas City on Wednesday October 19. Interviews from the event will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ from 9:00 a.m. - Noon CT. The regular season will start on Monday, November 7 with conference play beginning on New Year’s Eve.

The Commanders did just enough to come away with their first win since beating Jacksonville in the opener and handed the Bears (2-4) their third straight loss. Washington caught a huge break when it punted on fourth down at its 36. Jones had trouble tracking the ball, then let it hit off his arms. Holmes recovered it in a big pile at the 6, and Robinson scored two plays later.

HOUSTON (AP) — Yordan Alvarez and his mighty bat did it yet again, launching a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning off Seattle ace Luis Castillo that lifted the Houston Astros over the Mariners 4-2 for a 2-0 lead in the AL Division Series. Alvarez was the Game 1 hero with his gut-punch, three-run shot off reigning AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray with two outs in the ninth inning that gave the Astros an 8-7 win. This time, Alvarez sent a drive into the short porch in left field to put the Astros on top 3-2. Game 3 in the best-of-five matchup will be Saturday in Seattle.

Wichita, Kan.— Wichita State erased a two-set deficit to win their 17th consecutive home match against Tulsa, reverse sweeping the Golden Hurricane 20-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-18, 15-12 on Wednesday night at Charles Koch Arena. Things looked bleak for the Shockers (9-8, 4-2) after the opening two frames, as Tulsa (9-9, 2-4) hit .333 and .347 respectively to grab a 2-0 lead. Star outside hitter Kayley Cassaday&nbsp;did most of the damage, piling up 13 total kills in the first two sets, including a pair late in the second stanza to blunt a late WSU rally when the Shockers pulled within 22-20. Tulsa trailed just once in the first two sets, a 1-0 deficit to start the second after a service error. LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Returning to Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, the Kansas volleyball team defeated the TCU Horned Frogs 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-20) on Wednesday evening.

The Jayhawks improved their record record to 13-5 (3-3 Big 12), while TCU fell to 8-9 (3-3 Big 12).

“We were solid on a couple of their team performers,”&nbsp; head coach Ray Bechard. said “I thought our defensive game plan was spot on. We had great balance. Camryn Turner made some great decisions there. We were disappointed at Iowa State, and I thought there were some key moments tonight. The swing that Ayah Elnady took on set point in the second set was very aggressive.”

Sophomore Caroline Bien kicked off the match with the first kill of the night to tie up the set at one. To take the lead for Kansas, sophomore Camryn Turner tallied a kill for herself to put KU ahead 2-1.

TCU attempted a comeback, but graduate transfer Lauren Dooley and super-senior Anezka Szabo blocked the Horned Frogs offense to advance Kansas to 4-2. TCU was able to comeback for a tie, 5-5, but a long rally ended with a kill by Dooley.

Super-senior Rachel Langs put Kansas ahead by two after putting the ball past the Horned Frogs defense, 8-6. Back-to-back service aces by redshirt freshman Ayah Elnady forced a TCU time out at 12-7. Coming out of the timeout, Elnady recorded another service ace.

KU moved to a 17-11 lead after a block by Dooley and Szabo. Quickly after, Dooley earned a kill, pushing TCU to call for a timeout. TCU was able to get within four, 19-15, but Lauren Dooley brought Kansas back with her sixth kill of the evening. The Jayhawks were able to close out set one 25-18.

TCU began set two with a kill of its own. Elnady responded with her fourth kill of the match to put Kansas on the board 1-1. Langs took KU to 2-1 with her own kill.

In her first block solo of the night, Langs put KU to 3-1. The Jayhawks went on a 4-0 run before the Horned Frogs were back on the board, 4-2. TCU was within one point, but Elnady made it Kansas, 6-2.

An attack error by TCU was challenged by the Horned Frogs, but was unsuccessful and the point went to Kansas, 10-7. TCU was able to tie up set two 11-11, but a service error put Kansas back on top.

Another 4-0 run for the Jayhawks put Kansas in the lead 17-13. KU was ahead 22-17 following an attack error by the Horned Frogs. The momentum from Kansas continued and the Jayhawks were victorious in set two 25-23.

Langs began set three with a kill, but TCU responded with a kill of its own. Bien was able to put Kansas on the same level as the Horned Frogs 2-2. TCU came out with a vengeance as it took the lead early 6–3.

Szabo was able to tie up the set once again 6-6 after tallying her fourth kill. The Horned Frogs attempted to advance their lead, but a double block by Langs and Elnady rejected that. For the first time in set three, the Jayhawks were in the lead 9-8 after Elnady pushed past the TCU defense for a Kansas kill.

Langs and Turner blocked TCU and pushed the Horned Frogs to call for a timeout at 12-9. KU maintained the lead 16-13 when Dooley had a kill for the Jayhawks. A 19-14 lead was interrupted as TCU bounced back to be within three, 19-16. Kansas continued the set on top, leading 23-20. It didn’t take long before a kill by Dooley closed out the match 25-20.

“I think we are still a work in progress, but we are still learning, playing hard and doing a lot of good things,” said Bechard. “Nine blocks to two, digs were about the same, but the hitting efficiency paved the way for us.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The banged-up Kansas City Chiefs could be missing two more defensive starters and a key contributor in the secondary when they face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in a rematch of their thrilling overtime victory in January's playoffs.

The Chiefs already were missing starting linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who will finish a four-game suspension for an offseason incident, and still could be without first-round draft pick Trent McDuffie at cornerback for the fifth consecutive game.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said cornerback Rashad Fenton would miss practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury, and that backup safety Bryan Cook remained out with a concussion. They were injured in Monday night's win over the Raiders along with defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, who is likely headed to injured reserve after tearing his left ACL.

The Chiefs made a series of moves to fortify their roster, waiving defensive end Benton Whitley and signing defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth from the practice squad. Stallworth has appeared in 50 games over four seasons with the Saints and Colts, and was close to making the 53-man roster out of camp until he was beaten out by Khalen Saunders.

The Chiefs also cut defensive tackle Cortez Broughton from the practice squad and signed running back Wayne Gallman to it. Gallman played in 53 games in four seasons with the Giants before splitting last season with the Falcons and Vikings.

The biggest injury would be to Fenton, who started eight games last season and the first five this season, though he has struggled in recent weeks. He was beaten by the Raiders' Davante Adams on a long touchdown reception Monday night, and he was flagged for pass interference while trying to guard him, ultimately leading to another touchdown.

The Chiefs would likely turn to Joshua Williams, a fourth-round pick who has mostly played special teams, to start opposite fellow rookie Jaylen Watson. Williams helped to cover Adams in the final seconds as Kansas City preserved its win.

"I always go back to (GM Brett) Veach and the job his guys do," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "This kid went to a smaller school, he's very intelligent, he's big, but he hasn't played at this level. He jumped right into training camp and OTAs and worked, and you pull for that kid, and doing what he's doing."

Reid did say that McDuffie, who hurt his hamstring in the opener against Arizona, began practice Wednesday, beginning a 21-day window in which Kansas City must activate him or shut him down for the season. But the coach made it sound as if McDuffie would be back on the field sooner than later, and that Sunday was a longshot possibility.

"He's been rehabbing and we'll just see how he does," Reid said. "He's been going full speed with his rehab."

Defensive end Mike Danna was back at practice Wednesday after missing his third consecutive game with a calf injury, as was kicker Harrison Butker, who has practiced sparingly while recovering from a sprained ankle in the opener.

His replacement, Matthew Wright, set a franchise record Monday night with a 59-yard field goal against the Raiders. But he also missed a 41-yarder earlier in the game, which may have led Reid to try a failed 2-point conversion late in the game.

The Chiefs are still a week away from getting Gay back on the field, though he was able to be in the facility for the second consecutive week. Darius Harris, his replacement, led the Chiefs with eight tackles and a sack against Las Vegas.

"Great kid, very hard worker. Even on the scout team he gives you 110 percent," Reid said, "so you just figured he would get in there and do fine. He's been able to digest the offense well and stay on top of that."

Kansas City, Missouri, police said Adams pushed Ryan Zebley to the ground while running off the field following the Raiders’ 30-29 loss to the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night. Police called it an “intentional, overt act” that caused whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion. Adams apologized in his postgame comments to the media and later on Twitter.

It was an outcome dubbed as '13 Seconds,' representing how much time was left in regulation when Buffalo squandered a three-point lead in a 42-36 overtime AFC divisional round playoff loss in January. McDermott says the team has grown and matured from the experience. The showdown between 4-1 teams is the fifth between the non-division rivals in three years. The Chiefs have won three of four, including two playoff meetings.

Defensive players around the NFL are frustrated about roughing-the-passer penalties, questioning what constitutes a legal hit and wondering how far referees will go to protect quarterbacks. Two disputed calls in Week 5 sparked outrage among players, coaches and fans, prompting many to ask for change. NEW YORK (AP) — Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark says he has had “meaningful” conversations with ESPN and Fox as the conference explores striking a media rights deal almost two years before the current contract expires. The Big 12 announced in late August it planned to engage ESPN and Fox, even though the exclusive negotiating window between the conference and the networks does not open until February 2024. HUTCHINSON, Kan.-The No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team had a rough night offensively and the Butler Grizzlies took advantage in a 3-0 Jayhawk West sweep of Blue Dragons on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons lost 25-17, 25-20, 25-23 to the Grizzlies in the first of two meetings.

Hutchinson had hits four-match winning streak snapped and falls to 22-9 overall and 9-2 in the Jayhawk West. Butler improves to 18-10 overall and 9-1 in the league.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons play host to Colby at 3 p.m. on Saturday for Parents Day.

The Blue Dragons were out-hit .227-.099, hitting .000 in the first set. The Dragons out-blocked Butler 8-4.

Freshman Taniya Golden had a match-high 13 kills on .258 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons. She also had two solo blocks and three total blocks.&nbsp;

Sophomore Sophie Connor, sophomore Baylee Miller and freshman Anna Dean had five kills each.

IRVING, Texas—Adrian Martinez had done just about everything in his first four years of college football except play on a winning team.

Those wins are finally coming for him at Kansas State.

The 17th-ranked Wildcats (5-1, 3-0) sit atop the Big 12 standings in large part because of their dual-threat quarterback. He rushed for a combined 319 yards and acounted for nine touchdowns in breakout performances against Oklahoma and Texas Tech before he led the Wildcats to a grind-it-out victory at Iowa State last week.

Martinez has won three straight games for the first time after never winning more than two in a row at Nebraska. He was picked as the Big 12's top first-year transfer at midseason in a vote of Associated Press writers covering the conference.

Martinez set more than a dozen records in his time at Nebraska, but the Cornhuskers were just 15-29 while he often played hurt.

His 48 turnovers (30 interceptions, 18 fumbles) were most in the Bowl Subdivision from 2018-21, according to Sportradar. So far at K-State he has not thrown an interception or lost a fumble.

Martinez averages 241 yards of total offense per game to rank sixth in the Big 12, and he's fourth in rushing at 91 yards per game.

A key point of the early season was a 17-10 home loss to Tulane on Sept. 17. Martinez acknowledged he had played tentatively, and coach Chris Klieman and offensive coordinator Collin Klein sat him down and told him to forget about the possibility of making mistakes and let his natural ability take over.

“”That really speaks to the culture of this team and program, the leadership of coach Klieman and some of the older guys on this squad," Martinez said. “We were determined not to let it ruin our season. All our goals are still on the horizon. The Big 12, that's all it's about.”

QB Max Duggan, TCU (5-0, 2-0). He started 29 games for the Horned Frogs pre-Sonny Dykes and then lost the job to Chandler Morris in preseason practices. Morris sprained a knee in the opener against Colorado and hasn't been seen since. Duggan, meanwhile, has thrown for 261 yards per game with 14 touchdowns against one interception. He's second to Ohio State's C.J. Stroud in passer rating (194.36) and yards per attempt (10.3).

DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Kansas State. One of the most disruptive forces in the Big 12, he's building on a 2021 season that saw him earn all-conference first-team honors. He's tied for second nationally with 6.5 sacks. His two forced fumbles give him eight in 24 games, with his 0.33 career average best among active FBS players.

Kansas second-year coach Lance Leipold is known as a program builder, and his work with the No. 19 Jayhawks (5-1, 2-1) could be his best yet. The Jayhawks are ranked this season for the first time since 2009 and are one win from bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008. Leipold has done it with a big-play offense that has 19 plays of at least 30 yards and a defense fortified by a couple of key transfers.

Kansas was the easy choice, and last week's narrow home loss to TCU didn't do much to diminish the magnitude of what's happening in Lawrence. This is a program that hasn't won a conference championship in football since 1968, and it lost 91 of 97 Big 12 games under five coaches before Leipold took over last year. The Jayhawks still have a long list of accomplishments they would like to check off. The next opportunity comes Saturday when they go for their first win at Oklahoma since 1996.

Kansas QB Jalon Daniels was among the nation's most efficient passers until he injured a shoulder in the first half against TCU. He's doubtful for the game at OU. Daniels has thrown for 11 touchdowns and run for five, has been intercepted just once, and averages 234.5 yards of total offense per game. His six runs of at least 20 yards are second-most in the Big 12 and he's had eight passes go for at least 30.

Oklahoma (3-3) looked every bit the top-10 team it was when it won 49-14 at Nebraska. Now first-year coach Brent Venable's Sooners are 0-3 in Big 12 play for the first time since 1998 and coming off a 49-0 beatdown by Texas that was their most lopsided loss in the Red River Rivalry. The Sooners' offense has gone dormant in the absence of QB Dillon Gabriel, who's been out with a concussion since Oct. 1.

West Virginia coach Neal Brown is 2-3 in his fourth season and finding four more wins to get to .500 in the regular season won't be easy. One of the wins was against FCS Towson. Brown was one of the hot coaches after three straight double-digit-win seasons at Troy, but he's 19-21 at West Virginia. The Mountaineers are approaching four straight years without an appearance in the AP poll, which would be the program's longest stretch since 1959-68.

Gabriel was one of the Big 12's top transfers when he moved from Central Florida to Oklahoma and was sharp as he led the Sooners to a 3-0 start. He got outplayed by Martinez in the loss to K-State and has been out since the second quarter against TCU, when he took a devastating hit from Jamoi Hodge. The Sooners have scored one touchdown in 18 full possessions since Gabriel's been out.

WICHITA – Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/galvin_louis_mscz">Louis Galvin</a>&nbsp;tied for 10th to lead the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational at Crestview Country Club's North Course on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons closed out the fall season in tough scoring conditions posting a final-round 298 on Tuesday to finish the 54-hole tournament at 872.

Wichita State won the team title at 853. Utah Valley was second at 857 and Northern Iowa was third at 869.

The Blue Dragons were the highest-placing junior college team in the 10-team field. District III rival Indian Hills placed fifth at 876.

Galvin was the only Blue Dragon to place in the individual Top 10. He shot a 6-over 77 on Tuesday and closed at 4-over 217.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/clemons_dominic_18vf">Dominic Clemons</a>&nbsp;was the only Blue Dragon to shoot below par on Tuesday. Clemons had a 71 in the final round and tied for 16th at 218.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/lindstrom_alex_7wqw">Alex Lindstrom</a>&nbsp;also tied for 16th at 218. Lindstrom shot a 75 on Tuesday.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/saffell_blake_2ov2">Blake Saffell</a>&nbsp;tied for 20th at 219. Saffell closed with a 76.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/ross_louis_7khj">Louis Ross</a>&nbsp;placed 60th at 237 after a final-round 80.
